Ronald Lloyd Foster, 75, of McPherson, KS, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at McPherson Hospital.&nbsp; He was a Registered Surgical Nurse and retired from Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS.

Ron was born on March 22, 1948, in Miltonvale, KS, the son of Orville and Letha (Stites) Foster.&nbsp; Following high school, he went on to receive a nursing degree.

Survivors include: former sister-in-law, Rose Mary Evans (David Hearn) of McPherson, KS; half-brother, Terry Foster (Beth) of Russell, KS; half-sister, Liz Hedberg of Wichita, KS; several nieces &amp; nephews, including Robert S. Foster of McPherson, KS and Melicia Evans of McPherson, KS; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert W. Foster; and a sister, Rosalee Kern.

A private family service will be held.&nbsp; The final resting place will be in Miltonvale Cemetery.&nbsp;

Memorial donations may be given to Alzheimer’s Association in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.

Beverly J. Hower, 85, of Salina, Kan., passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2024. She was born August 26, 1938, in Russell, Kan., to Herman and Opal (Wheeler) Dumler.

Beverly met her future husband, Larry Hower, on the first day of kindergarten in Russell, and they were later married on March 4, 1960, in Liberal, Kan. Beverly loved her cats and dogs, playing bridge, word games, and she was a big reader of mystery novels. She was a member of Tri Sigma sorority at Emporia State University and past member of P.E.O. Chapter DL.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Larry; daughter, Janelle Niesse, Stratford, N.H.; son, Todd Hower, Salina; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Niesse, Rochester, N.H.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and grandson, John Niesse.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church, 138 S 8th St, Salina, KS 6740.

Carol Marie (Churchbaugh) Smell July 31, 1934 ~ January 28, 2024

Carol Marie (Churchbaugh) Smell, 89, of Ottawa, KS died Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Vintage Park in Ottawa, Kansas.

She was born July 31, 1934 in Lawrence, Kansas the daughter of Marshall and Letha (Montgomery) Churchbaugh. Carol’s first job at a young age was ironing, she was proud to share she was earning $0.15 an hour, she shared her ironing expertise with her kids and grandkids. She graduated from Baldwin High School in 1951 and worked for J.C. Penney as a bookkeeper and then KU Endowment. On June 17, 1955, Carol was united in marriage to William Neill Smell and they spent 64 loving years together before his passing on July 5, 2019.

Together they purchased Briscoe Drug in 1969 where Carol kept the books for 30 years. After retirement, Bill and Carol moved to Bella Vista, AR for 15 years. They then returned to Ottawa in 2015 to be near family.

Carol spent her days outdoors in the flower gardens, always digging in the dirt and growing beautiful plants. When she was indoors she was found in the kitchen, wearing an apron with flour on her hands. She loved sharing her amazing baking skills with her family, her church family at Westminster Presbyterian and her friends. She often opened her kitchen to share her baking talent with others teaching the art of bread and pie baking. Carol was a member of P.E.O. Chapter GL, participated in many Bible studies and women’s groups. She was known as a prayer warrior with handwritten notes of her prayer list that she prayed for often.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Smell; her parents, Marshall and Letha Churchbaugh; her sister, JoAnn VanHoesen; and her son-in-law, Joel Nichols.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Tucker and her husband, Joe, of Princeton, KS; a son, Kevin Smell and his wife, Carolyn, of Overland Park, KS; a brother, Ron Churchbaugh of Shawnee, KS; 5 grandchildren, Aaron Nichols and his wife, Lindsay, of Princeton, KS, Jessica Callaghan and her husband, Brett, of Ottawa, KS, Amanda Jo Brown and her husband, Drew, of Gardner, KS, Kyle Smell of Overland Park, KS, and Caitlin Smell of Overland Park, KS; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Carol Sue (Mehl) Hicks July 29, 1945 ~ January 26, 2024

Carol Sue Hicks, 78, passed away Friday, January 26, 2024 at her home, surrounded by family, in Ellsworth. She was born July 29, 1945 in Arkansas City, KS and adopted by Ernie and Aileen (Choitz) Mehl. She married Dale Robert “Bob” Hicks in Holyrood on August 11, 1963. Carol was a longtime resident of Ellsworth where she was an LPN at the hospital, owner and operator of Carol Lee Donut Shop, receptionist at H&amp;R Block, clerk at Ampride, and most importantly a “Grammy” to many.

Carol is survived by her sons, Gordon Hicks (Kim) and Jeff Hicks (Toni), both of Ellsworth; brother-in-law Ron Hicks (Susan) of Colby, KS; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren of her own as well as many very special “adopted” grandkids; as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernie and Aileen Mehl; husband Bob Hicks; and brother John Mehl.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Ellsworth Cemetery.

Larry D. Womochil April 7, 1938 ~ January 28, 2024

Larry Womochil of Detroit, Kansas passed away Sunday January 28, 2024 at Village Manor in Abilene. Larry was born April 7, 1938 in Elmo, KS to Howard and Vera Womochil. Larry attended several area schools but graduated from Chapman High School after the Enterprise High School consolidated with Chapman. Larry served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1960 to 1966. He qualified as an Expert Carbine and had been a squad leader.

On April 29, 1962 Larry married Nancy Houlton from this union a son Mike and Daughter Diane were born. Larry and Nancy were later divorced. On October 11, 1997, Larry married Carole Kirchner.

Larry’s life was spent working mostly for Walker Stone or the companies that later bought the firm. Larry could do nearly every task at the quarries from setting up new plants to being a mechanic to a welder.

Larry is survived by his son Michael and his wife Kelly, His daughter Diane Ferris and her husband Steve and 17 grandchildren. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carole, his sisters Twila Tyson and Trevia Schneider, his brothers Lyle, Gerald (Butch) Glenn and Tracy Womochil.

Funeral services for Larry will be held Friday February 2, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Londeen-Overlease Funeral Chapel 206 W. 5th Chapman, KS 67431. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery South of Enterprise following the service. Kyle Cox Martin March 19, 1985 ~ January 27, 2024

Kyle Cox Martin, 38, of Assaria passed away Saturday, January 27, 2024 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.  Kyle was born March 19, 1985 in Salina, KS to Richard and Julianne (Cox) Martin.  He married Molly Loder on March 7, 2015 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Salina.    

Kyle graduated from Smoky Valley High School in 2004. He was a multi-sport athlete and went on to play tennis at Hutchinson Community College where he earned an associate’s degree in business. Next he moved to Colorado for a year, working as a hunting guide and cowboy for a ranch by Greeley, CO.

After moving back to Kansas, Kyle attended Kansas State University for two years, despite being an avid Kansas Jayhawks fan.  He worked as an operator for CHS Refinery in McPherson and as a land agent and realtor for Red Cedar Land in St. Johns, KS.

Kyle was a member of The Ark Church in Salina. His passion was the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, farming, cattle- he was in the process of passing these passions on to his two boys. Kyle was the founder of the Smoky Valley Whitetails Unlimited chapter and was one of the founding members of Ducks Unlimited at KSU.

He is survived by his wife: Molly Martin of the home; his children: Kruze (8), Kash (4), and Kassidy (1); his parents:Richard and Julianne (Cox) Martin of Lindsborg; brother: Eric Martin (Kristin) of Lindsborg; sister: Haley Schmitz (Brandon) of Wamego, KS; father and mother-in-law: Monte and Julie Loder of Marquette, KS; grandparents: Sonja Martin of Salinaand Doris Cox of Assaria; aunt and uncle: Connie and Kermit Dorf of Assaria; uncle: John Martin of Salina; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and close friends.

Kyle was preceded in death by his grandparents: Richard D. Martin and Fred Cox, Jr.  

Kyle chose to give the gift of organ and tissue donation. Cremation will follow. 

The family will greet friends at a visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 1, at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 am on Friday, February 2 at First Covenant Church, 2625 E. Magnolia, Salina, KS with Pastor John Huseman officiating.

Kimberly Kay Pelsor October 14, 1962 ~ January 26, 2024

Kimberly Kay Pelsor, 61, of Ottawa, KS passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 26, 2023 at her home.&nbsp; She was born October 14, 1962 in Bucyrus, OH the daughter of Vernon Lewis Starr and Darlene (Laipply) Starr.&nbsp;

She enjoyed her early years of elementary school in North Robinson, Ohio, spending time with her grandparents, fun times with her great grandparents on their farm, and following her older brother to his many baseball games and tournaments.&nbsp; With a move to Minnesota, Kim’s family made their home in Maple Lake, Minnesota and a home on the lake.&nbsp; This is where Kim fell in love with the outdoor activities of the Minnesota summers and Minnesota winters.&nbsp; Summer brought swimming in the lake, water skiing and fishing.&nbsp; The winter brought plenty of snow, snowmobiling, ice skating, and ice fishing.&nbsp; During her high school years, she enjoyed participating in gymnastics and playing the flute in high school band.&nbsp; Another family move brought Kim to Olathe, Kansas where she attended and graduated from Olathe South High School. During her high school years at Olathe South, Kim continued with participation in band, gymnastics, and soft ball.&nbsp;

Kim worked as a CNA and a CMA working at Crestview Nursing Home, Ransom Memorial Hospital and the Christian Care Cottage all in Ottawa, KS.&nbsp; She later worked at the CO-OP - Casey’s Store in Ottawa, KS.&nbsp;

She was united in marriage to Ronald W. Pelsor on October 14, 1994 in Ottawa, KS.&nbsp; They shared over twenty-nine years of marriage. They enjoyed summers by taking their camper to local lakes for fishing or enjoyment of the outdoors.&nbsp; Kim and Ron also loved taking motorcycle rides and Kim took joy in taking the motorcycle on local errands.&nbsp; As a Kansas City Royals fan, watching the Royals was a “must” for Kim.&nbsp; Another hobby that Kim took delight in was her Diamond Art picture collection.&nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp;Kim is now in the loving arms of Jesus as she leaves behind her husband, Ron; two sons, Kenny Smith and Marcus Smith; her mother, Darlene Rudy and stepfather, Dough Rudy; brothers, Kris Starr and wife Kimberly, Kirk Starr and wife Anne, Shane Rudy and wife Amanda, Aubry Rudy and wife Megan; and many special nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Dale and Helen Laipply; her father, Vernon Starr; and her sister, Kerry Lynnette Starr. &nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>Kimberly Kay Pelsor October 14, 1962 ~ January 26, 2024Kimberly Kay Pelsor, 61, of Ottawa, KS passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 26, 2023 at her home.&nbsp; She was born October 14, 1962 in Bucyrus, OH the daughter of Vernon Lewis Starr and Darlene (Laipply) Starr.&nbsp;She enjoyed her early years of elementary school in North Robinson, Ohio, spending time with her grandparents, fun times with her great grandparents on their farm, and following her older brother to his many baseball games and tournaments.&nbsp; With a move to Minnesota, Kim’s family made their home in Maple Lake, Minnesota and a home on the lake.&nbsp; This is where Kim fell in love with the outdoor activities of the Minnesota summers and Minnesota winters.&nbsp; Summer brought swimming in the lake, water skiing and fishing.&nbsp; The winter brought plenty of snow, snowmobiling, ice skating, and ice fishing.&nbsp; During her high school years, she enjoyed participating in gymnastics and playing the flute in high school band.&nbsp; Another family move brought Kim to Olathe, Kansas where she attended and graduated from Olathe South High School. During her high school years at Olathe South, Kim continued with participation in band, gymnastics, and soft ball.&nbsp;Kim worked as a CNA and a CMA working at Crestview Nursing Home, Ransom Memorial Hospital and the Christian Care Cottage all in Ottawa, KS.&nbsp; She later worked at the CO-OP - Casey’s Store in Ottawa, KS.&nbsp;She was united in marriage to Ronald W. Pelsor on October 14, 1994 in Ottawa, KS.&nbsp; They shared over twenty-nine years of marriage. They enjoyed summers by taking their camper to local lakes for fishing or enjoyment of the outdoors.&nbsp; Kim and Ron also loved taking motorcycle rides and Kim took joy in taking the motorcycle on local errands.&nbsp; As a Kansas City Royals fan, watching the Royals was a “must” for Kim.&nbsp; Another hobby that Kim took delight in was her Diamond Art picture collection.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Kim is now in the loving arms of Jesus as she leaves behind her husband, Ron; two sons, Kenny Smith and Marcus Smith; her mother, Darlene Rudy and stepfather, Dough Rudy; brothers, Kris Starr and wife Kimberly, Kirk Starr and wife Anne, Shane Rudy and wife Amanda, Aubry Rudy and wife Megan; and many special nieces and nephews.She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Dale and Helen Laipply; her father, Vernon Starr; and her sister, Kerry Lynnette Starr. &nbsp;&nbsp;To celebrate Kim’s life, a visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, 325 S. Casper passed gently into the light on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at the age of 69, surrounded by prayer, love, and family after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Scott City, Kansas, on November 15, 1954, to Casper J. and Martha L. (Hill) Pahls.&nbsp; Casper graduated from Salina South High School in 1972 after which he joined the Air Force. Casper was a proud Air Force Veteran and especially enjoyed his time while stationed in Japan.&nbsp; He loved his career as an over-the-road truck driver for Mahaska-Pepsi.&nbsp; He met many long-lasting friends during his over-the-road travels whom he cherished.&nbsp; Casper was an avid hunter, trap shooter, and fisherman.&nbsp; He was a firm believer in catch and release as he refused to eat fish—there wasn’t enough ketchup in the world to make fish edible for him.

Casper was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp; He is survived by his two sisters, Elizabeth O’Byrne (Douglas), and Dr. Mary Chittim (Clayton), brother Christopher (Ron), a niece, Jeanne McManaway (Mike), a nephew, Jason O’Byrne (Amy), three great nephews and five great nieces, and many caring friends.

Services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Ryan Funeral Home in Salina, Ks. Visitation will be at 1:00, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00.&nbsp; Interment&nbsp;will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with military honors.&nbsp; A reception will follow at Ryan’s. It is the family’s hope that friends and loved ones will join them at the reception to share fun stories and memories.

Marilyn Dee (McCausland) Schleiger, 88, formerly of Salina, died Thursday, January 25th&nbsp;in Schertz, TX where she has resided since 2016. Marilyn was born August 8, 1935 in Beloit, KS to Harry Clifton and Anna Edith (Humes) McCausland. She graduated from Salina High School in 1953 and married Ralph Schleiger that same year.

Marilyn worked for Southwestern Bell for over 25 years. After retirement, she worked briefly for the Salina School Board. Marilyn was a cancer survivor who always enjoyed life. Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph, an infant son David, her sisters Maxine Johnson, Lucille McCausland, Virginia Rees, Vivian Zajac and brothers Bob and Bill McCausland. Survivors include her children Bob (Susan) Schleiger of Derby, KS, David (Yvette) Schleiger of Schertz, TX and Connie Ausland of Bartlesville, OK; a brother, Gary (Judy) McCausland of Overland Park, KS; seven grandchildren, Victoria, Emma, Thomas, Lauren, Michael, Eric and Kristy; and eight great grandchildren, Amelia, Alyssa, Alex, Ruby, Myla, Sutton, Remi and Lincoln. 

Visitation will be Sunday Feb. 4 from 1-5pm at Ryan Mortuary, Salina with family receiving friends from 3-5p.m. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30am Monday, Feb. 5 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 845 S. Ohio, Salina. Marilyn Dee (McCausland) Schleiger

Mary Carolyn Thiel passed away Tuesday January 30, 2024 at Pine Village nursing home in Moundridge, Kansas. She was born on December 20, 1939 in Topeka, Kansas the daughter of Merle and Matilda (Binger) Holbrook.

Carolyn grew up in Topeka and attended school there graduating from Topeka High in 1957. She excelled at school and found her footing as a member of the theater department bringing a painfully shy person out of her shell. The next step of her journey saw her head to Kansas State University where she majored in English with an eye towards becoming a librarian until her future husband Thurston entered the picture.

On May 21, 1960, she married Thurston Thiel in Topeka, Kansas and soon they were on their way to fulfilling Thurston’s 3-year commitment to Army service. During this time the couple were stationed in multiple locations throughout the U.S., and eventually ended up in Germany for 2 years. This was a very exciting time for the young couple as they had the opportunity to travel all over Europe, and many of Carolyn’s fondest memories were of this “extended” honeymoon.

After their Army service the couple moved back to Gypsum to begin their life as a ranch family with the couple welcoming a daughter Rebecca Lynn in 1965 and a son Andrew Kurtis in 1978. Carolyn was a devoted mother and homemaker, and fierce believer in the power of education. Although Carolyn never participated in sports, she loved watching her children participate and constantly cheered them on in all of their endeavors.

In 1990, Carolyn decided it was time to enter the workforce, and began her career as a stocker at Target for well over a decade. Carolyn made many friends while working at Target, and she truly enjoyed helping others as well as the measure of independence her job provided.

Carolyn was a lifelong member of Temple Church and viewed her church family as integral for a “city” girl trying her best to learn the ins and outs of farm life. This community of believers led by her mother-in-law Elsie helped Carolyn navigate the difficult transition of becoming a farm wife, and helped her to excel as a mother, wife, and believer in Christ.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Thurston Thiel, her parents, Merle and Matilda Holbrook and sister Sally Hayes. She is survived by her daughter, Becky Cooper (Randy) of Gypsum, and son Andy Thiel (Janelle) of Gypsum and grandchildren, Cade and Bryce Cooper, and Haley, Adam, Hannah, and Eli Thiel.

Cremation has been selected. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday February 7, 2024 at Temple Church, 9657 Amos Rd Gypsum, Kansas. Pastor Craig Rankin will be officiating with burial to follow at Temple Church Cemetery.

Mary Carolyn Thiel

Kenneth Oliver Holderread was born on a dairy farm in Cushing, Oklahoma, to Leslie and Minnie (Kinzie) Holderread on March 27, 1938. He was the third of four children. For his first five years of schooling, Ken attended Cottonwood Elementary, a one-room schoolhouse. He then attended Hillside Country School through 8th grade when the schools consolidated, before graduating from Cushing High School. While in high school, he was an active FFA member, exhibiting dairy cattle at local, state, and regional fairs. He had a knack for working with animals and could convince an untrained heifer to lead with a halter.

While attending McPherson College, Ken met and fell in love with Elsie Lucore. Six weeks later, they were engaged. They married on August 10, 1958, in Arriba, Colorado, and spent over 65 adventurous years together traveling the world and following God’s call, including&nbsp;traveling to all 50 states and many countries around the world.

During college, Ken took some time off to serve as youth director for the Western Region of the Church of the Brethren.&nbsp; Ken earned his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts with a minor in math from McPherson College, a master of divinity and doctorate of ministry degrees from Bethany Theological Seminary, and certification in Clinical Pastoral Education. He also received Spiritual Direction training from the Shalem Institute.

After college, he taught public school in Newton, Kansas from 1961-62 before he and Elsie were called to their first international placement, a teaching post in Ghana, West Africa from 1962-64. Their son, Barry, was only 9 months old, and they arrived without the trunk containing his diapers. Ken volunteered his undershirts to fill the gap until they arrived. Ghana is where Ken felt the call to ministry, and he enrolled at Bethany Seminary upon their return. During their time in Oak Brook, IL, daughters Deb and Cathy were born. Ken supported his family while in seminary by substitute teaching, selling hearing aids, driving limousines, and being a youth pastor at a Presbyterian Church.

From 1968-79, Ken pastored the Empire Church of the Brethren in CA. During this time, he directed a Clinical Pastoral Education unit in the parish setting and held various ecumenical positions in the Modesto Council of Churches and its relief ministries. He also served as a “seagoing cowboy” for Heifer Project (International) and accompanied a group of cattle from the port in San Francisco to Busan, South Korea, to care for them on their journey. In 1979, Ken and Elsie moved their family to Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, to pastor the Memorial Church of the Brethren.

In 1984, Ken and Elsie were called by the former Church of the Brethren General Board to go as mission workers to Sudan (leaving four days after Cathy graduated from high school). Their significant work in Sudan took place during a time when warfare was occurring in the Darfur region and included training pastors, evangelists, and church leaders. The couple also developed a Theological Education by Extension (TEE) program in English, Arabic, and Nuer, working out of the capital city of Khartoum. When they returned to the US, Ken worked from the General Offices in Elgin, IL. During this time, the program was expanded to include a ministry seminar to help pastors deal with war and famine. As Africa and Middle East representative for the Church of the Brethren, Ken continued his work related to African concerns as well as collaborative relationships with ecumenical and humanitarian organizations, particularly in Sudan and the area that is now South Sudan. He also made several working visits to South Africa, and had the opportunity to worship with Nelson Mandela at a meeting of US church leaders, when Mandela was here to address Congress and touring US cities to rally support in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa.

Ken later served as District Executive for the Illinois and Wisconsin District of the Church of the Brethren. After retiring for the first time in 2001, the couple were Co-Executives for the Western Plains District for another seven years where they developed leadership for a church renewal program. He remained a Spiritual Director for many years and had a passion for being present with others on their spiritual journey. He supervised 20 student pastor interns during his ministry and participated in local, regional, and national peace demonstrations and other activities.

Ken enjoyed singing in college and throughout his life in various groups and choirs, as well as many solos and duets with Elsie. A favorite for him was singing with his family, especially for grace before meals. He loved spending time with family and attending his grandchildren’s activities. In addition to having a playful sense of humor, he was also very intentional about validating and supporting the life decisions made by his children and grandchildren.

Ken envisioned possibilities yet to come and was perfectly matched with Elsie who worked quietly behind the scenes with all the details. He had a heart for listening and meeting people wherever they were, and for journeying together with them. He lived a life of ministry, being open to God’s call and calling forth the gifts in others. In a quote from an interview in the Messenger magazine about his focus for mission, Ken said, “We are called to a new understanding and a new faith, a new way of approaching faith even for our own lives if we are sensitive to the whole world.”

Ken passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 28, 2023, at The Cedars in McPherson, at age 85. Ken is survived by his wife, Elsie; three children: Barry (Rebecca) Holderread, Deb (Allan) van Asselt, Cathy (Mike) Patrick; nine grandchildren: Emma and Helen Holderread; Kerrick (Anna), Kaitlyn, and, Grace van Asselt; Ben (fiancee, Rebecca), Andy, Chris, and Alyssa (fiance, Jacob) Patrick; brother, Glen (Joan) Holderread; brother-in-law, Don (Nancy) Lucore; sisters-in-law, Charlene Holderread, Susan Blackford, Dorothy Kipp, and Darlene Lucore; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Minnie Holderread; sister, Betty Holderread; brother, Don Holderread; brothers-in-law, Keith Kipp, Sylvus Flora, and Dale Lucore; sister-in-law, Martha Flora, niece, Linda Flora, and nephew, Doug Holderread.

Graveside service will be held February 2, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the Big Creek Church of the Brethren cemetery (101 N Brethren Rd) in Cushing, OK. A service of remembrance will be held on February 3, at 10:30 am at the McPherson Church of the Brethren (200 N Carrie) in McPherson, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He remained a Spiritual Director for many years and had a passion for being present with others on their spiritual journey. He supervised 20 student pastor interns during his ministry and participated in local, regional, and national peace demonstrations and other activities.Ken enjoyed singing in college and throughout his life in various groups and choirs, as well as many solos and duets with Elsie. A favorite for him was singing with his family, especially for grace before meals. He loved spending time with family and attending his grandchildren’s activities. In addition to having a playful sense of humor, he was also very intentional about validating and supporting the life decisions made by his children and grandchildren.Ken envisioned possibilities yet to come and was perfectly matched with Elsie who worked quietly behind the scenes with all the details. He had a heart for listening and meeting people wherever they were, and for journeying together with them. He lived a life of ministry, being open to God’s call and calling forth the gifts in others. In a quote from an interview in the Messenger magazine about his focus for mission, Ken said, “We are called to a new understanding and a new faith, a new way of approaching faith even for our own lives if we are sensitive to the whole world.”Ken passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 28, 2023, at The Cedars in McPherson, at age 85. Frederick Dean Herman, 91, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 28th, 2024.

Fred was born in Luray, Kansas on November 1, 1932, a son of Ollie Pearl (Parks) and Fred C. Herman.

Survivors include two daughters, Deanna Williamson (James), of Maple Hill, Kansas; Delores Shively (Rick), of Apache Junction, Arizona; two sons, Ronald Herman, of Oakley, Kansas; Richard Herman (Andrea), of Park City, Missouri; and life partner, Joyce Rediker, of the home.

He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Christopher Torres (Amanda), Matthew Williamson (Rebecca), Jennifer Bumgarner (Jeremy), Michael Herman, Alyssa Herman; 7 great grandchildren; and 1 step-great grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ollie Herman; his wife, Arelene Herman; 4 sisters, and 2 brothers.

Fred married Arelene Paget on May 20, 1951.  They enjoyed 45 1/2 years of marriage before she died in 1996.

He was always an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing.  His grandchildren learned the game of pitch from Grandpa.

He shared his life with Joyce Rediker for 26 years.  They enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing rummy, and just spending time together.

Fred's family expanded to include her five children, Debra Hansen of Wichita, Kansas; Terry Harrington (Dorene), of Salina, Kansas; Kimberley Stewart (Brian), of Junction City, Kansas; Kelly Rediker (Dawn), of Wichita, Kansas; and Katrina Arensman (Zac), of Salina, Kansas with 27 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Friday, February 2nd, at Carlson - Geisendorf Funeral Home.

Richard Ray Pine, 50, of Vassar, KS died Monday, January 22, 2024 at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas.

He was born January 20, 1974 in Denver, Colorado the son of Richard and Sheryl (Keyton) Pine.&nbsp; He graduated from Northglenn High School with the class of 1992.&nbsp;

On October 15, 1994, Richard was united in marriage to Mandy Smith in Thornton, Colorado.

Richard worked as a Senior System Admin for the I.T. Department of Huhtamaki in De Soto, Kansas for 15 years.

Richard loved the Denver Broncos, his 1968 Camaro, and watching dog shows, but most importantly, he loved his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Pine.

He is survived by his wife, Mandy Pine of the home; two sons, Stephen Ray Pine of San Diego, CA, and Daniel Louis Pine of Wichita, KS; a daughter, Isabella Miranda Pine of Wichita, KS; his mother, Sheryl Benzen and her husband, Wayne, of Thornton, CO; and a brother, Robert Pine of Ash Fork, AZ.

Steven Lloyd “Caz” Caswellof Salina, Kansas passed away January 10,2024in Wichita, Kansas. &nbsp;Steve was born June 2,1956inBell, California to W.L. “Doc” Caswell and Norma Jean Caswell.

Steve will be remembered as an awkwardly funny character. &nbsp;Always one to share a joke that the receiver would have to think about before realizing it was a funny!&nbsp;His awkward giggle&nbsp;afterwards&nbsp;always brought a&nbsp;laugh.&nbsp;Steve had a passion for cars, and everyone will always remember him for his bright lime green Mopar. He also developed a passion for dune buggies and loved to tear up some sand dunes!

Steve was united in marriage with Elizabeth “Liz”&nbsp;(Ferguson)&nbsp;Caswell on&nbsp;December&nbsp;19, 1975. &nbsp;Together they brought&nbsp;into&nbsp;the world Jennifer Ann,&nbsp;and Jeremie Jon&nbsp;who unfortunately passed as an infant. &nbsp;Steve loved his children fiercely, and with&nbsp;his beloved&nbsp;daughter&nbsp;Jenny,&nbsp;tried his best to make her life as happy as possible with fun holidays and a grand swimming pool in the back yard in which&nbsp;all of&nbsp;the neighborhood kids would hang out. &nbsp;Oh, and don’t forget the endless hours of “Snipe” hunting that he put the kids on.&nbsp;The old neighborhood kids that remember him, remember his love of Halloween and the 4th&nbsp;of July. Both over the top and entertaining when his beloved daughter Jenny was alive, he never missed the opportunity to entertain her and her friends. &nbsp;Jenny, unfortunately passed&nbsp;away from Leukemia at the age of 11, leaving Steve and Liz heartbroken.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Life after the passing of his beautiful daughter was not easy for Steve. &nbsp;Steve felt lost and broken, and traveled the hard roads, unfortunately causing Steve and Liz to divorce and go their separate ways. &nbsp;Steve continued down the tumultuous roads until he was saved by the love his life Mary Helen (Forsberg). &nbsp;Mary&nbsp;Helen and Steve loved spending time together sitting in front of their house and traveling on adventures with their dune buggies. &nbsp;Unfortunately, Mary Helen passed away of an illness after many years together.

Survivors include his mother Norma Jean Caswell of Kerrville, Texas, sister Val Caswell-Gibbs of Kerrville, Texas, step-children – Ryan Forsberg and Rachel Forsberg, step-grandchild – Caitlyn Forsberg, and special significant other Eva Stover of Salina, Kansas, as well as many other family and close friends.

Steve is proceeded in death by his&nbsp;adored&nbsp;children-&nbsp;daughter, Jennifer&nbsp;Ann&nbsp;and&nbsp;son, Jeremie Jon,his&nbsp;beloved wife, Mary Helen,&nbsp;and his father W.L. Caswell.

A celebration of life will be planned&nbsp;at a later date.

Jerry Knapp, 85, of Ottawa, KS passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehab in Baldwin City, KS.&nbsp; He was born January 23, 1939 in Kansas City, MO the son of Virgil Knapp and Juanita (McAdams) Knapp.

He served his country in the United States Navy, Army and Air Force.&nbsp; He worked for the Kansas City, KS Police Department for ten years and was a Reserve Officer for other Departments.&nbsp; He later worked for the Franklin County, KS Sheriff’s Department for three years.&nbsp; He worked at GM and Ford Plants in Kansas City. He was a locomotive engineer retiring from Union Pacific Railroad in 1999 after thirty years of service.&nbsp;

Jerry’s favorite past times were riding motorcycles and watching movies.&nbsp;

Mr. Knapp was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Juanita Knapp; and a son, Rocky Knapp.

Surviving family includes, his wife, Kathy Knapp of thirty-eight years; a sister, Karen (Jim) Gray of Kansas City, KS; and children, Sheri (Steve) Peters of Foster, MO, Gina (Bob) Eck of St. Louis, MO, Ronie Knapp Green of Kansas City, KS, Danny (Brandi) Knapp of Kansas City, KS, Wendy (Mark) Anfinson of Overland Park, KS, and Shannon Roth of Joplin, MO; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He will be greatly missed.

James A. Baker Jr. December 23, 1953 ~ January 26, 2024

James “Jim” Baker, Jr. of Abilene, Kansas passed away surrounded by those who loved him at Village Manor Nursing Home on 01/26/2024. Jim survived cortical basal degenerative disease years past expectations lifespan partly due to the care he received from his children, son-in-law, and grandchildren, as well as Dickinson County Home Health. He was known to walk multiple times day throughout the park with his dog Tony, searching for treasures keeping him active. He loved to visit with those who brought his meals on wheels each day as well. Jim never met a stranger and always spoke to those who passed him. He was a KC Chiefs and K-State Wildcats fan!

Jim was born on 12/23/1953, in Salina, KS to James Baker Sr. and Joy Koerner. Jim spent his adult life following in his stepfather Ron’s career path of a meat cutter/market manager at Dillons where Jim served since the early 1970’s. Jim did open Augusta Meat and Deli Shop in the 1990’s prior to him returning back to Dillons where he eventually retired.

Jim spent his retirement years in Abilene close to his children attending his grandchildren’s activities watching his granddaughters Shaylee and Malee’ dance, sing and be sassy. His grandson Lockett loved watching the black and white westerns with his Grandpa. Grandpa didn’t mind sitting in the summer heat watching Shaylee and Lockett play ball too. Jim had recently learned to FaceTime with his youngest granddaughter, Norah watching her grow and babble about her day.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother Joy Koerner, step father Ron Koerner, and sister Tracy Wines, his Grandma Grace who was so special to him he bought his first house next door to her! He is survived by his father James Baker, Sr. and wife Rosie Enid, OK. Sisters Cory Baker, Sherry Baker both of Augusta, KS. Brothers Mitch Koerner Derby, KS, Donnie Koerner of Hays, KS.His favorite son, Stace Baker and his wife Sarah of Clay Center, KS. Daughter aka his own “Nurse” Sherree’ and her husband, Jim’s “Tech Man” Curtis Osland of Abilene, KS. Daughter, “hoghead” Alexa and son in law Jeff Nathan of Maryland. 

Jim has “big” grandchildren too, Samantha and her husband Jeremy Nunweiler as well as 2 great grandchildren of Abilene, KS. Adam Osland and Jasmine Seiler of Manhattan, KS. He was very proud of his children and shared that with them even in his final days. He always taught us kids to work hard as he enjoyed traveling and the only way to travel is to work hard.

As a family of our Dad we would like to thank Dr. Holmes, DK County Hospice and specifically all of the staff of hall 5 at Village Manor for the love and care you gave our Dad over the past several months and the care you gave us as we navigate this journey.

Jim had recently learned to FaceTime with his youngest granddaughter, Norah watching her grow and babble about her day.Jim was preceded in death by his mother Joy Koerner, step father Ron Koerner, and sister Tracy Wines, his Grandma Grace who was so special to him he bought his first house next door to her! He is survived by his father James Baker, Sr. and wife Rosie Enid, OK. Sisters Cory Baker, Sherry Baker both of Augusta, KS. Brothers Mitch Koerner Derby, KS, Donnie Koerner of Hays, KS.His favorite son, Stace Baker and his wife Sarah of Clay Center, KS. Daughter aka his own “Nurse” Sherree’ and her husband, Jim’s “Tech Man” Curtis Osland of Abilene, KS. Daughter, “hoghead” Alexa and son in law Jeff Nathan of Maryland. Jim has “big” grandchildren too, Samantha and her husband Jeremy Nunweiler as well as 2 great grandchildren of Abilene, KS. Adam Osland and Jasmine Seiler of Manhattan, KS. He was very proud of his children and shared that with them even in his final days. Michelle Ann Thigpen was a nurturing, loving mother, grandma, sister, and aunt to many who will miss her dearly. On January 26, 2024, she passed away peacefully at the age of 68.

Michelle was born March 25, 1955, in Abilene, KS. She grew up in Abilene until moving to South Carolina with her husband Wayne Thigpen. She loved being a homemaker while raising her three children. After her children started their lives, she moved back to Abilene to spend her last beautiful days with her mother, 8 siblings, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Yeadon SR., Tom Rossiter, and Edna Rossiter, her husband Wayne Thigpen, and her brother Tommy Yeadon.

Survivors include her siblings, Frances Schneider, Flora (Verlyn) Bergman, Jeanette Yeadon, all of Abilene, Judy (Michael) Tasker, of Wisconsin, John Yeadon Jr., Lisa (Don) Good, Edward Yeadon, and Jamie Yeadon all of Salina. Her children, Christy (Steve) Thigpen-Parker, Marie (Bubba) Thigpen-Saulisberry, Jason Thigpen (South Carolina), 3 grandchildren, Heather (William) Rivera, Brandon Saulisberry, Hunter (Kaite) Saulisberry, many great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, January 30th, 2024, at Ryan Mortuary 137 N. 8th St, Salina, KS. Visitation will be held the hour prior the service. Burial will be immediately following the service at the Livingston Union Cemetery, 2951 Indy Road, Abilene, KS.

Ila was born to Rhea and Richard Sherbert on June 19th, 1950 in Clay Center, Ks. and passed away on January 27, 2024. She discovered later that her actual biological father was Austin Mansfield, whom had married Rhea after she divorced Mr. Sherbert. Ila lived for a time in Concordia but then moved to Liberal, Ks. She married Jim Walton on June 1, 1968. They had one son, James Dalee Walton. She then married Dan Hittle in 1971. She had no children with Dan, but did have two step children, Lisa and Chris Hittle. During her lifetime she worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline in Liberal several years, Mobil Oil Company in Hugoton, Rosel Energy, and the Liberal Police Department, finally finishing out her working years with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks in Pratt, Ks. after her and Dan moved to Iuka, Ks. in 2008. &nbsp;She enjoyed traveling, several hobbies and her dogs. As per her instructions, no services are to be held at this time.

Michael Kent Wallace, 72, of Salina, Kansas, was called home on Thursday, January 25th, 2024.

Mike was born in Superior, Nebraska on October 3, 1951, a son of Betty (Saathoff) and Carl Glenn Wallace.

Mike graduated from Burr Oak high school in 1969. Mike and Marva were united in Marriage in 1994. He was a spiritual man and longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was the owner of Wallace Landscape and Irrigation for over 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Marva Wallace, of the home; daughter, Monica Mussat, of Salina; four sons, Jason Wallace, of Beverly, Kansas, Joshua Wallace (Sara), of Pratt, Kansas, Domenic Mussat (Anna), of Lenexa, Kansas, and Christopher Feil (Amanda), of Salina; grandchildren, Drew Bergeson (Jacob), Brayden Fencl, Stephen Mussat, Brianna Mussat, Easton Mussat, Madden Mussat, Wyatt Feil, Bella Feil, Jamie Feil, Jackson Wallace, Griffin Wallace, Dyllen Wallace, Jaycee Aikman (Kevin), Addie Wallace, Molly Wallace; great grandchildren, Brynlee Bergeson, Blakely Bergeson, Andrew Bergeson, Hunter Aikman, and Jackson Aikman.

Mike is also survived by two sisters, Charlene Wallace (Fred Grubiss), of Oak Point, Texas, Pat Volker, (Justin) of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three brothers, Jim Wallace (Carolyn), of Marietta, Georgia, Tom Wallace, (Ping) of Salina, and Brian Wallace (Cindy), of Hastings, Nebraska.

Cremation was chosen and a Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, February 2, 2024, at Carlson - Geisendorf Funeral Home, Salina.

Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina, Kansas.

Lucille “Maxine” (McClay) Brown, 97, of Ottawa, KS died Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Rock Creek in Ottawa, Kansas.

She was born May 26, 1926 in Baldwin City, Kansas the daughter of George “Dewey” and Vera (Sutor) McClay.&nbsp; Maxine’s family moved to Ottawa, Kansas when she was just 5 years old, and she graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1944.&nbsp;

Maxine began working shortly after graduation from high school for the United Sates Department of Agriculture as a secretary.&nbsp; She worked there all of her professional career until her retirement in 1990.

Maxine was a member of NARFE for many years.&nbsp; She was a member of the Princeton United Methodist Church and active in the United Methodist Women at the church holding all church offices over the years.&nbsp; She enjoyed entertaining and having family dinners, especially her Sunday family dinner.&nbsp; She loved being a mother of four children and being active in their lives as they grew up, attending all of their music and school events over the years.&nbsp; She liked to travel but was unable to do much of it as she spent many of her years caring for her husband during retirement.&nbsp; She enjoyed nights out to the ELKS Lodge especially steak night. Maxine was very honest and forthright with her opinions.&nbsp; You always knew how she felt because she just told you, but she had a loving a kind heart that cared for her family dearly.

On January 23, 1946, Maxine was united in marriage to William David Brown in Ottawa, Kansas at the trinity United Methodist Church parsonage. They shared fifty-eight years of loving marriage until the death of David in 2004.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Brown; her parents, Dewey and Vera McClay; a daughter, Jan Croucher; son-in-law, Pat Haas; a brother, Richard McClay; and a sister, Freone Hollinger.

She is survived by two sons, David Craig Brown and his wife, Myrna, of Greeley, KS, and Marc William Brown and his wife, Susie, of Richmond, KS; a daughter, Sharon Elaine Haas of Ottawa, KS; a brother, Lyle McClay of Chanute, KS; a sister, Geneva Culbertson of Texas; a son-in-law, Rod Croucher of Ottawa, KS; 10 grandchildren, James Brown and his wife, Amy, Springdale, AR, Travis Haas, Longdale, AR, Rachelle Rodriquez and her husband, Jerad, Broken Arrow, OK, Megan Morris and her husband, Doug, Ottawa, KS, Wade Brown and his wife, Angie, Raymore, MO, Derek Brown, Lawrence, Cody Croucher and his wife, Angela, Ottawa, KS, Andy Croucher, Ottawa, KS, Randy Hohenstein, Collinsville, OK, Robyn Erhart, Olathe, KS; 20 great-grandchildren, Caleb, Kiera, Gavin, Dane, Natalie, Nicole, Reese, Quinncy, Maleah, Weiland, Owen, Clara, Lydia, Tyler, Tanner, Brianna, Austin, William, Anastasia, Atticus; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Marsha Doyenne, age 71, left this world on Friday, January 19, 2024 at the Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kansas.

Inspired by her parents, she developed a love of music and business. While other children played “house”, “school”, or “cowboys”, Marsha played “business” and explored sounds on the piano.Wearing a red dress, Marsha married Mike Peil (CHS class of ’68) at the age of 18. This was an early sign of her spirit of adventure and good humor. The two moved to Garden City where Marsha earned a pilot’s license for fun. Later they moved to San Jose, California. There, Marsha worked in bookkeeping and accounting, then computer software development and sales. She also played organ in various venues.By the early 1980s, Marsha and Mike divorced, though they remained friends. In time, she moved from the Bay Area to Los Angeles.By 1990, Marsha chose to focus on music. She changed her name to Doyenne, the original Belgian spelling of the family name, and then moved to New York to study with a composer. That year, she was the first American organist to perform in a Beijing, China concert hall, thanks to a Chinese physicist friend from the Bay Area who made the arrangements.In 1991, Marsha performed an organ concert in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The communists had recently lost power, and during their reign, organs and religious music had not been allowed. She fell in love with Prague and returned seven times during her life.Needing additional income and seeing herself as more of a composer than a performer, Marsha took a consulting job with Apple Computer that involved travel to Europe and Australia. Inspired, she struck out on her own in 1995 and moved to Australia where she lived for eight years and gained citizenship.In 2003, she returned to Concordia to spend time with her parents. When Peggy wished to retire, she bought her mother’s business, Country Cousins. Over time, she phased out the health foods and gift shops to focus on fabrics. Fabric Essentials was born and quickly she realized the need to create an online business for quilters to supplement the storefront revenue. Today, walking into Fabric Essentials is an immersion in color, fabric designs, and beautiful display quilts, with a welcome by friendly and loyal staff.&nbsp;Throughout her time in Concordia, Marsha managed a variety of rental properties. She also served on the Cloud County Community College Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2011.Marsha was preceded in death by her father Ray in 2016, her mother Peggy in 2022, an infant brother, Hal Doyen, and her former husband Mike Peil. She is survived by sisters Diane (Craig) Johnson of Cortland, Nebraska and family, and Amie Doyen of Concordia, and by a lifelong friend and near-son, Kurt Koscielniak, who Mike &amp; Marsha befriended for eight years through Big Brothers Big Sisters and remained close to ever since. Marsha’s wide circle of friends was loyal to the end.A celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the Brown Grand Theater, Concordia, KS.A private graveside service was held Saturday January 20, 2024 at the Rice Cemetery, Rice, KS.
