Ralph H. Viola March 21, 1928 ~ March 31, 2024

Ralph passed on Easter morning and our goodbyes are with the solar eclipse. Ralph just celebrated his 96th year. Born in Abilene, March 21, 1928 to Vernon and Ozetta (Shetron) Viola. The middle of 5 children. If you see a Viola store due bill coin, that is Ralph at age 5 printed on it. As a young teen, he delivered telegrams and once delivered birthday greetings from President Roosevelt to Eisenhower’s mother. He was treasurer of his 1948 Abilene class. Graduating from Kansas State University, he later earned his Master’s in Business. Ralph retired from Boeing after 45+ years.

Ralph met wife Marian Nagely in college when she asked him to a Sadie Hawkins dance. They started their adventures together in May 1950. Enjoying 53 years traveling, living in 5 states, 5 years in Tehran, Iran, 2 years in Montreal. Traveled through all 50 states, all Canadian Provinces, 34 countries and US territories.

After Marian’s death in 2003. Ralph returned to Abilene and married Avis (Clark) Wells. Introducing her travel for 10 years until her death in 2013.

He crossed the equator, the Arctic Circle, drove thru Alaska-Cascade Hwy, made a trip around the world and flew on 45+ air carriers. He parachuted, went up in air balloons, helicopters and multiple different aircraft. Ralph served in the Army and the Air Force, retiring as a Major.

He achieved his pilot’s license. Was a member of several air museums and supported Abilene Aviation. Owner of 2 airplanes, his joy was his L2, Taylor Craft. A cloth covered prop plane. He helped restore and display FIFI, a WWII B29 Bomber.

Ralph loved life, taking an interest in all it had to offer. Generous to a fault, he never understood why anyone would not do a kindness when they had the opportunity. Stubborn, independent and much loved.Proceeded in death by his brothers Vern, Bob, Don and sister Ilene (Favand). Survived by his children Ralph Viola, Cindy (Dainard), Toni and husband David (Pearson). Grandchildren Jeasen and Anji Viola, Samuel, wife Amy, and Meriah Dainard, Laura and Anna Pearson. All of Washington State.

Services will be Monday, April 8, 10:30 am at 1st Southern Baptist Church, 1400 Mulberry St in Abilene. Visitation will be Sunday, April 7, 2024 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene.

Memorials may be made through Martin-Becker-Carlson to the 4H, Abilene Airport, Mt Pleasant Presbyterian, Abilene Historical Museum, The Arts Council, Neighbor to Neighbor, The Great Plains Theatre or the Community Foundation of Dickinson County.

Dorothy Jean Wells September 30, 1933 ~ April 7, 2024

Dorothy Jean Aebi Wells went to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 7, 2024, at age 90. She was born on September 30, 1933, in Herington, KS to Milton and Marjorie (Johnson) Aebi. She was the granddaughter of a Swiss immigrant. She grew up on the family farm north of Woodbine and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1951 from Woodbine High School. She had only one sibling, Darrell, who died in a car accident in 1961. Jean married her lifelong love, Albert Edward Wells of Dade County, GA, on August 22, 1951, in The Chapel of the Transfiguration in Grand Teton National Park, WY. Al preceded her to heaven on August 7, 2022.

They made their home in Enterprise for most of their 70 years of marriage.

Jean was a homemaker while her children were young, and later worked at Froelich’s Grocery Store in Enterprise, and then at the Dickinson County Bank. She was a member of Enterprise EHU and served on the Enterprise Library Board.She attended Emmanuel Church in Abilene and was active in a women's Bible study until her health prohibited it.

In addition to Al, she was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother Darrell Aebi, and son-in-law Ray Van Sickle.

Jean is survived by her daughter Christiane Van Sickle of Newton, and son Kenyon (Kathy) of Olathe. Also, grandchildren Melodi (Caleb) Wood, Brent (Jennifer) Van Sickle, Abbie Bazan and Ashley (Francisco) Pacheco as well as 7 great-grandchildren: Shane and Sawyer Wood, Brook, Braden and Bryce Van Sickle, and Jude and Oliver Bazan. She was devoted to her family.

A funeral service will be held at Danner Funeral Home, 501 N. Buckeye in Abilene on Friday, April 12th at 2:00, with her grandsons Pastor Brent Van Sickle and Pastor Caleb Wood officiating. The family will receive friends for 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the Woodbine Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Church. The family would like to thank the staff of Garten Countryside Home for their loving and compassionate care.

Donald Dean Mosiman September 5, 1932 ~ April 5, 2024

Don’s life began on September 5, 1932, at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton, Kansas. He was the son of John and Marie (Mueller) Mosiman. Don was a 1950 graduate of Whitewater High School. Don served his country in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955, where he trained scout dogs in Germany until his honorable discharge. He was united in marriage to Marilyn R. Schuessler on September 2, 1955, at the Valley Center First Baptist Church. Don was a stockman and farmer in the rural Furley area for his entire life. He served on the Green Valley Cemetery Board from 1989-2017, the Furley Grade School Board, the Furley Grain Company Board. &nbsp;He was a member of &nbsp;Palmyra Baptist Church, serving in the past as treasurer and a trustee. &nbsp;The family was named the Sedgwick County Farm Family of the Year in 1996. His loving family surviving him &nbsp;includes his wife of 68 years, Marilyn Mosiman; children Rhonda Mosiman of El Dorado, Bret (Julie) Mosiman of Benton, Diane (Allen) Hosler of El Dorado, Tracy (Dennis) Boldt of Hillsboro and Carolyn ( Bronson) Webb of El Dorado; grandchildren Cort Mosiman, Ellen Youngman, Addie Entz, Matthew Webb, Anna Webb, Katie Webb, Daniel Webb, &nbsp;Lane Hosler, Brooke Hosler, Dillon Boldt and Dawson Boldt; six great grandchildren; and sister Elizabeth&nbsp;Bowlin, brothers Wayne Mosiman and Duane Mosiman, sister in law Madeline Mosiman; and numerous nieces and nephews. &nbsp;Don passed away on Friday April 5, 2024, at Kidron Bethel in North Newton. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Johnny, Willard, Gerald, and Eldon Mosiman. A visitation time, with family present, will be held on Friday April 12, 2024, from 5-7 p.m. at Lamb Funeral Home in Whitewater. &nbsp;Norma Jean Bird July 17, 1938 ~ March 28, 2024

Norma Jean Bird, 85, passed away in her home in El Dorado, KS on March 28, 2024, and went to be with Jesus. &nbsp;Norma was born and raised in Springfield, MO to Mack and Mable Whitlock. After high school she moved around the country and overseas with her first husband Don Bird and their four children with the military. Norma and Don settled in Ramona, KS where she lived for almost 30 years. Her and Don were married for almost 50 years before he proceeded her in death in 2006.

In 2008, she found love again and was married to Zeb Wright. They celebrated almost 16 wonderful loving years together. While Norma suffered from many health issues over the past several years, Zeb made it his life’s mission to help care for her at home. They often both said that everyone should get the opportunity to share a love like theirs in their lifetime.

For much of her life, she was an antique dealer and ran her store Norma’s Attic in Ramona and Herington, KS. She also worked in home health. Norma loved to watch things grow, whether it was her gorgeous gardens, the children she taught in Sunday school, or her grandchildren’s bellies as she cooked delicious meals. She had an amazing green thumb and was known for her beautiful flower beds, ponds, orchards and vegetable gardens. Cooking meals fresh from the garden was one of her favorite things to do. You were quite lucky if you were the one enjoying it! &nbsp;She was an amazing cook! Norma was also a follower of Jesus and loved everyone. &nbsp;She would remind everyone, that Jesus is love. She attended Rosebank Church for many years where she taught Sunday school as well as being a board member. She loved volunteering and helping others. Many families in need would often come to her for food or household supplies. She would never turn anyone needing help away and she always made everyone feel special and loved. She would be upset if we failed to mention she was a very proud democrat! &nbsp;If you knew her, she could be quite ornery, mischievous, and full of pure love, leading her to have a very special bond and relationship with all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She would always tell each of them they were her very favorite. Her family was her greatest joy and blessing.

Norma is proceeded in death by her first husband Donald Bird Sr, son Donald (Donnie) Bird Jr, her parents and two siblings.

She is survived by her husband Zeb Wright, daughters Fern Leach, Cindy Bird, and Julie Bird (Mark), Grand Children, Jennifer Davis (Robert), Rachel Fenske (Jason), Mathew Leach, Joshua Leach (Ciara), Michael Shearer (Lacey), Katrina Frigault (Karen). Great Grand Children Alexander Fenske, Benjamin Davis, Isaac Fenske, Karter Shearer, Alayna Leach, Kade Shearer, Lily Fenske, Olyvia Darwin, and Dallas Shearer.

Her family will hold a private family celebration of life. In lieu of flowers or memorial we ask that you do an act of kindness in remembrance of Norma. She was the pure definition of love and the rock of our family. She will be missed beyond measure.

Floyd “Stan” Standridge, Jr. September 19, 1942 ~ April 5, 2024

Floyd “Stan” Standridge, Jr., 81, Salina, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2024. Stan was born September 19, 1942 in Sallisaw, OK, the son of Floyd Sr.&nbsp; and Voyce Irene (Brewer) Standridge. He held 2 Masters Degrees and was proud to be an educator for 44 years. Stan spent most of his extensive career as a guidance counselor at Salina South High School where he supported countless young people as they navigated the path through high school and the first steps beyond graduation.&nbsp; He was honored to be recognized as 1998 Kansas Master Teacher of the Year and was selected to be a Fulbright Teacher Memorial Fund to Japan honoree.&nbsp; He held many leadership positions in various professional, religious and civic organizations throughout his life and career.&nbsp; Stan was a devout Christian having served his home church, Salina First Church of the Nazarene in countless ways over the years.&nbsp; He loved doing genealogy research, reading American and Egyptian History, learning about NASA and space science, and was the best listener and problem solver in the whole world.

Most importantly, Stan was known by all who knew him as a man of God with great integrity who was loyal, steadfast and deeply devoted to his beloved wife, his family and his community.

He is preceded in death by his Mother and Father.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sharon, daughter Jennifer Segal (Peter) of Cumberland, ME, son Brian (Bridgette) Standridge of Salina, grandchildren Quincy Segal, Charles Segal and Jack Segal; sister Dorthea (Bob) Baker, of Barnsdall, OK; his brothers and sisters-in-law as well as many nieces and nephews, and his bonus “found” family Sheila and Joe Barber, Devin Barber, Desmond Barber, Denae (Brandon) Harris, and their children.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 9, 2024 from 11-2 pm and Funeral Service at 2 pm, both at the First Church of the Nazarene.

Betty (Kristenson) Barnes, 95, of Ottawa, KS died Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Advent Health Hospital in Ottawa, Kansas.

She was born February 1, 1929 in Pomona, Kansas the daughter of Wilbur Harry and Lucille (Hartpence) Kristenson.&nbsp; She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1947.&nbsp;

On June 29, 1948, Betty was united in marriage to Donald Lee Barnes at North Baptist Church in Ottawa, Kansas.&nbsp;

Betty was first and most importantly a home-maker, but she also worked a few years for Hallmark in the packaging department.

Betty was known as a wonderful cook.&nbsp; Meals were at 8:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. every day.&nbsp; Her bologna sandwiches were gourmet, along with chicken and noodles, gravy made with a secret potato water, and dessert including pie crusts. For potlucks, she was requested to make pie, red velvet cake, and German chocolate cake.&nbsp; She would also can various foods.&nbsp; Betty enjoyed playing BINGO, playing cards, and square dancing with her husband and friends. She also enjoyed occasional fishing in her younger years and she was quite the athlete when she was in high school, playing softball and basketball. She loved mowing on the riding mower out in the “weed patch” or their small pasture during the summer. She enjoyed keeping a garden of flowers and some vegetables as well.&nbsp;Grandma Betty was a faithful and enthusiastic fan of all of her grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ activities and sporting events! She was known as ornery and liked to play tricks.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Lucille Kristenson; her husband, Donald Barnes; a son, Larry Barnes; a brother, Wilbur Kristenson, Jr.; and a sister, Dorothy Nadine Nitcher.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Ferris and her husband, Jim, of Ottawa, KS; two grandsons, Terry James Ferris and his wife, Beverly, of Edwardsville, KS and Michael Lee Ferris of Kansas City, KS; a granddaughter, Amy Alfrey and her husband, John, of Junction City, KS; a daughter-in-law, Anne Barnes of Ottawa, KS; eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Janice Elizabeth (Christiason) Masters, 76, of Council Grove, KS died Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital, Manhattan, Kansas.

She was born November 23, 1947 in Barclay, Kansas the daughter of Homer Allen Christiason and Lucille Irene (Davis) Christiason.&nbsp; She grew up in Osage City graduating from Osage City High School with the class of 1965.&nbsp;

On December 5, 1975, Janice was united in marriage to Jimmie Marshall Masters in Council Grove, Kansas. They enjoyed 45 years of loving marriage and travelling to places like Colorado, Alaska on a cruise, Coolidge, AZ, and Germany until Jimmie’s passing on March 27, 2021.&nbsp; They loved being snow birds and being in Arizona or out west during the winter months. &nbsp;

Janice worked as a brake press operator for Kansas Instruments in Council Grove, KS for many years.&nbsp; She also was a generous volunteer at the Council Grove Senior Center.&nbsp;

Janice was an avid reader, especially murder mysteries.&nbsp; Along with her sister Phyllis, she enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, and they would text each other to see who could guess the puzzle first.&nbsp; Janice also liked bowling.&nbsp; She loved teacup poodles, and enjoyed putting up bird feeders to attract hummingbirds.&nbsp; Janice was always on Facebook.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Lucille Christiason; her husband, Jimmie Masters; two sisters, Marlene Shepard and Phyllis Doll; and four brothers, Jerry, Robert, Richard, and Mike Christiason.

She is survived by a son, David Alan Venable and his wife, Peggy, of Houston, TX; a sister, Rita Christiason of Osage City, KS; 6 grandchildren, Lauren Mitro, Rowyn Smith, Danielle Hostettler, Emily Williams, Ayla Allinson, and Darian Venable; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Betty May (Jaques) Currier was born May 1, 1928 in Bismark, ND and went to her final resting place on April 2, 2024 in Spring Hill, KS, twenty-five years to the day that her husband, Jim, died.&nbsp; She was the oldest of six children to Edna (Snyder) Jaques and Avalon Jaques.&nbsp; She graduated from Bancroft High School in SD in the class of 1947.&nbsp; Betty was united in marriage to James Kay Currier on March 23, 1949 at the home of her grandparents in Steele, ND. They had been married fifty years. Their daughter Dorothy was born in Bismarck, ND in 1950.&nbsp; Dorothy was one year old when they moved to California where their son David was born in Scotia, CA in 1952.&nbsp; Betty was a homemaker until Dorothy was a senior in high school and went to work for Fortuna Redwood Mill, making lawn furniture.&nbsp; It was hard work but she enjoyed the friends she made while working.&nbsp; She was a long time member of the Campton Heights Baptist Church and made many friends there, some who became like family.&nbsp; She left California in 2011 when her daughter and husband moved her to Paola, KS to live with them.&nbsp; She became a member of the First Baptist Church of Paola.&nbsp; Betty was proceeded in death by her parents Avalon and Edna Jaques, her husband Jim, son David Currier, granddaughter Stacie Dempsey, brothers Morris Jaques, Donald Jaques, Lyle Jaques.&nbsp; She is survived by her daughter Dorothy (Harold) Hendrickson of Paola, sister Donna Hamann of Redding, CA, brother Loren (Brenda) Jaques of Salzer, CA, granddaughters Abby (Danny) Cavender, Cassy (Will) Osborn, grandsons Scott (Matt) Shappell-Fineout, Jim (Sarah) Shappell,&nbsp; Gabriel (Michelle)&nbsp; Ross, CJ Dempsey, great grandchildren Ali Shappell, Kyla Shappell (Tyler Chaffee-engaged), Coy Cavender, Cash Cavender, Amelia Osborn, Piper Osborn, Cyler Dempsey, Addison Dempsey, Nathan Heredia, Justin Heredia.&nbsp; She will be buried next to her husband at the Masonic Cemetery in Rohnerville, California.&nbsp; There will be a memorial service in Paola to be announced at a later date.&nbsp;

George Wingert, Sr. May 26, 1931 ~ April 1, 2024

George Wingert, Sr. went to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on April 1, 2024. George was born to Harold and Lois Wingert in Wellsville, KS, on May 26, 1931. He attended West Windy Elementary School and Wellsville High School, served as Senior Class President, and graduated in 1949. George attended Kansas State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry in 1953. While at Kansas State University, he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and the Livestock and Meats Judging Teams. After graduation, he served in the United States Army, attended the Meats and Dairy Hygiene School in Chicago, IL, and conducted Meat Inspections in New York City, NY from 1953-1956.

George was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, businessman, cattleman, and friend. After serving in the Army, George was hired by Cities Service Company, Wichita, KS, as an agricultural sales representative across Kansas. In 1960, he joined Hesston Corporation as a field sales representative, selling farm equipment in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. In 1964, George had an opportunity to purchase a gasoline bulk plant in Ottawa, KS, leading to a career in retail and wholesale gasoline distribution. In 1970, George was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives for four terms, serving as chair of the House Governmental Organization Committee and vice chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. In 1979, George was appointed to the Kansas Board of Regents, advancing and improving higher education across Kansas. Given his love for politics, policies, and people, George was hired as a lobbyist, promoting various industries across Kansas from 2005-2020, concluding a 50-year political career. As a hobby, George enjoyed breeding and raising cattle, serving as the National President of the American Polled Hereford Association.

George was introduced to Jane Allvine, a Kansas City, KS native, and they were married on August 1, 1959. They moved to Ottawa, KS, in 1964. Their interest and involvement in community events, activities, and elections fostered a deep love for wonderful neighbors and lifelong friends. George was a resident of the Ottawa community for 60 years.

George is survived by his daughter, Nancy Wingert of Overland Park, KS; his son George Jr. Wingert and wife Diane of Kansas City, KS; his son Harold Wingert and wife Kathie of Ottawa, KS; his son Fred Wingert and wife Brandy of Stillwell, KS; and seven grandchildren including Jackson, Claire, Isaac, Caroline, Laura, Baylor, and Beckham. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Bob Eugene Wingert and wife Kay of Lenexa, KS; his sister-in-law Nancy Allvine of Roswell, GA; and eleven nieces and nephews including his niece Teri Wingert of Mason, OH; his nephew Dr. Bart Wingert and wife Dr. Sue of Wichita, KS; his niece Betsy Thamert and husband Andy of Estes Park, CO; his niece Daphne Adair and husband Randy of Wylie, TX; his niece Wende Doyle and husband Jeff of Wichita, KS; his nephew Dr. Matt Wingert and his wife Lisa of Liberty, MO; his nephew Andy Wingert and wife Cristi of Eudora, KS; his niece Katie Chiles and husband Danny of Lenexa, KS; his niece Cassie Murray and husband David of Olathe, KS; his nephew Doug Allvine and wife Mary Claire of Roswell, GA; and his nephew Drew Allvine and wife Blake of Roswell, GA.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Allvine Wingert, on December 25, 2015, after 56 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his sister Kay Chalender and husband Dr. Ralph Jack of Overland Park, KS; his brother Dr. Fred Dwight Wingert and wife Kathy of Wichita, KS; his brother-in-law Dr. Fred Allvine of Roswell, GA; and his niece Marcia Allvine of Roswell, GA.

George was renowned for his smile and positive outlook on life. He was a remarkable storyteller with stories relevant to life and relatable to life decisions. Additionally, George enjoyed playing cards including bridge and pitch. He relished supporting his children and grandchildren in their pursuits and activities, including cattle shows and county fairs. George was a lifelong Kansas State Wildcat fan, watching and attending many sporting events for over 70 years.

George was an active member of Grace Community Fellowship Church in Ottawa, KS, bringing donuts to Bible Study weekly. He will be honored during a visitation on Friday, April 19, from 5-7:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, April 20, at 11:00 a.m. both at Grace Community Fellowship Church, 501 South Popular Street, Ottawa, KS, 66067. A luncheon will be provided at the conclusion of his service to share stories and memories.

In 1964, George had an opportunity to purchase a gasoline bulk plant in Ottawa, KS, leading to a career in retail and wholesale gasoline distribution. In 1970, George was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives for four terms, serving as chair of the House Governmental Organization Committee and vice chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. In 1979, George was appointed to the Kansas Board of Regents, advancing and improving higher education across Kansas. Given his love for politics, policies, and people, George was hired as a lobbyist, promoting various industries across Kansas from 2005-2020, concluding a 50-year political career. As a hobby, George enjoyed breeding and raising cattle, serving as the National President of the American Polled Hereford Association.George was introduced to Jane Allvine, a Kansas City, KS native, and they were married on August 1, 1959. They moved to Ottawa, KS, in 1964. Their interest and involvement in community events, activities, and elections fostered a deep love for wonderful neighbors and lifelong friends. George was a resident of the Ottawa community for 60 years.George is survived by his daughter, Nancy Wingert of Overland Park, KS; his son George Jr. Wingert and wife Diane of Kansas City, KS; his son Harold Wingert and wife Kathie of Ottawa, KS; his son Fred Wingert and wife Brandy of Stillwell, KS; and seven grandchildren including Jackson, Claire, Isaac, Caroline, Laura, Baylor, and Beckham. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Bob Eugene Wingert and wife Kay of Lenexa, KS; his sister-in-law Nancy Allvine of Roswell, GA; and eleven nieces and nephews including his niece Teri Wingert of Mason, OH; his nephew Dr. Bart Wingert and wife Dr. Sue of Wichita, KS; his niece Betsy Thamert and husband Andy of Estes Park, CO; his niece Daphne Adair and husband Randy of Wylie, TX; his niece Wende Doyle and husband Jeff of Wichita, KS; his nephew Dr. Matt Wingert and his wife Lisa of Liberty, MO; his nephew Andy Wingert and wife Cristi of Eudora, KS; his niece Katie Chiles and husband Danny of Lenexa, KS; his niece Cassie Murray and husband David of Olathe, KS; his nephew Doug Allvine and wife Mary Claire of Roswell, GA; and his nephew Drew Allvine and wife Blake of Roswell, GA.George was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Allvine Wingert, on December 25, 2015, after 56 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his sister Kay Chalender and husband Dr. Ralph Jack of Overland Park, KS; his brother Dr. Fred Dwight Wingert and wife Kathy of Wichita, KS; his brother-in-law Dr. Fred Allvine of Roswell, GA; and his niece Marcia Allvine of Roswell, GA.George was renowned for his smile and positive outlook on life. He was a remarkable storyteller with stories relevant to life and relatable to life decisions. Additionally, George enjoyed playing cards including bridge and pitch. He relished supporting his children and grandchildren in their pursuits and activities, including cattle shows and county fairs. George was a lifelong Kansas State Wildcat fan, watching and attending many sporting events for over 70 years.George was an active member of Grace Community Fellowship Church in Ottawa, KS, bringing donuts to Bible Study weekly. He will be honored during a visitation on Friday, April 19, from 5-7:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, April 20, at 11:00 a.m. both at Grace Community Fellowship Church, 501 South Popular Street, Ottawa, KS, 66067. Dick McLinden October 23, 1942 ~ April 4, 2024

Dick’s life began on October 23, 1942, in Hillsboro. He was the son of V.L. “Bud” and Roseva (Melson) McLinden. Dick was a 1960 graduate of Florence High School and attended Kansas State University for 2 ½ years. Dick was united in marriage of Patty Longhofer on August 24, 1963, and began married life as a rancher. He earned his pilot’s license in 1968, a skill he would enjoy throughout his life. Dick became a Chase County Deputy Sheriff in 1970 and opened Dick’s Welding in Cottonwood Falls. He was promoted to Undersheriff in Chase County and was later elected Sheriff of Chase County in 1976. In June of 1978, as the Sheriff, on a rodeo Friday night, he ran a drunk rodeo clown off the road and infamous lore of the drunken clown and the bear was born. In 1978, he relocated the family to Tipton, MO. when he took a job with Feed Services Corporation of Crete, NE. In the fall of 1986, he moved the family back to Kansas, working for Farm Bureau Insurance and then as a welder at Hillsboro Industries before “landing” his dream job, flying the pipelines for Eagle Sky Patrol of South Dakota, where he retired in 2019 and became a fixture at the local coffee shop. Dick was a parishioner of Holy Family Parish, an active member of the Father Kapaun Knights of Columbus Council. He also served on the Marion Airport Board. Dick is survived by his loving wife Patty of Florence; children Chuck (Karen) McLinden, and Susie (Craig) Morton; grandchildren Regan (Korey) Morton, Lauren (Tony) Martinez, Jordan Morton, Jarrett (Natalie) McLinden and great granddaughter Orlee Williams. Dick passed away suddenly on Thursday April 4, 2024, at his home. He is preceded in death by his parents. LeRoy Schmidt, 86, Salina, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024. LeRoy was born November 19, 1937 in Pfeifer, KS, the son of George and Katherine (Briet) Schmidt. He was the co-owner of Royal Tire Company for 32 years, retiring in 1988. LeRoy was a co-founder and member of the Saline County Sheriff Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad. He coached baseball and was a scout leader for his boys and a 4-H leader with his four children for many years. He enjoyed farm life with his horses, cattle, pigs and chickens. He and Joyce took many trips overseas and spent winters going south to Texas. Many summers were spent camping with his family and friends as members of the Good Sams Camping Club. He was a member of Isis Shrine Temple and the Knights of Columbus and a member and President of the local U.C.T. Club.

He is preceded in death by 5 brothers and 7 sisters.

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Joyce (McClellan) Schmidt; his children; sons, Wendell (Valorie) Schmidt and Waldeen (Melinda) Schmidt and daughters, Leah (Gary) Jayne and Linnea King. His grandchildren are Jessica Sander, Wendy Trujillo, Malorie Tindall, Phillip Schmidt, Janell Shultis, Dustin King and Aaron King. He has 7 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8:00 pm Monday evening, April 8, at the Ryan Mortuary, Salina, where Vigil services will be held at 7:00 pm that evening.

Memorials are suggested to The Sisters of St. Joseph, 1300 Washington St, Concordia, Kansas, 66901.

Alice Marie Summerfield was born July 28, 1937, the youngest daughter of Johanna Moore Evans and Llewlyn Thomas Evans, in Reading Kansas. Alice met and married Robert C. Blythe in Dwight Kansas on December 25, 1954, and they had two children, Steven and Christopher. Alice and Bob were later divorced, and Alice remarried Eddie Summerfield in Jay Oklahoma on September 1, 1979.

Alice was preceded in death by parents Johanna and Llewlyn, sisters Barbara and Kathryn, brother John, husbands Robert Blythe and Eddie Summerfield, and son Christopher. Alice is survived by son Steve (Cindy) Blythe of Burlingame, Kansas, daughter-in-law Nancy Blythe of Estes Park, Colorado, and stepdaughter Gretchen Newman of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She is also survived by grandchildren Suzanna (Aaron) Cubit of Garnett Kansas, Chantelle Haas of Auburn Kansas, Ashley (Greg) Haverstock of Bishop California, Amber (Michael) Nattrass of Estes Park Colorado, Allison (Jason) Mahurin of Claremore Oklahoma, Chelsey (Rex) Osborn of Broken Arrow Oklahoma, and Cory Newman of Oklahoma City Oklahoma. She leaves behind many great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends.

Jimmie D. Mayhew, 80, Abilene, KS, passed away on April 1, 2024. He was born in Marysville KS, the son of Dale and Bonnie (Bothwell) Mayhew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and former wife, Bobbie Jo Torrence.

He is survived by wife, Pattie, of the home; sister, Sheri (Roger) Dowding, Syracuse, NE; brother, Tanner (Leah), St. Joseph, MO; son, David (Melinda), grandchildren, Joseph and Nathon Mayhew, Okarche, OK; Daughter, Janna (Mike) Medlin, grandchildren Ethan, Dillon Smith and Kylee (Kendon) Brown, all of Oklahoma; Stepson Brian (Desiree), Lorissa and Davin Bailey, Leavenworth, KS; stepdaughter, Heather (RJ) Ferrari, Avalyn and Mackenzie Ferrari and stepson, David P. Leach, Chicago, IL.

He attended Fairbury College, Fairbury, Nebraska. Following his attendance there he joined the National Guard and was subsequently activated in 1969, serving in Vietnam. Other duty assignments included Kansas, Alaska, Colorado, and Maryland. He retired from his military career as a Major and subsequently served as a civilian with the Directorate of Logistics, as the Ft. Riley Property Book Officer.

During his retirement years, he loved bird-watching; photography, serving the Boy Scouts in Abilene; Konza prairie as a docent; Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, Canton, KS; President of the Kansas Ornithological Society; President of the Smoky Hill Trail Association and on the Board of Trustees for the Dickinson County Historical Society.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dusty Bookshelf, 700 N. Manhattan Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Larry William "Bill" Leander, 81, passed away on March 30, 2024 at his home in Gypsum, KS.

Larry was born on September 10, 1942 in Salina, KS to parents Richard and Berniece Johnson Leander.

Larry was retired as a Truck Driver from Leander Trucking in Gypsum.

He enjoyed BBQing, driving around town checking up on everyone, he never new a stranger, enjoyed the neighborhood kids, he loved spending time with the grandkids and handing out his Leander Trucking pens. He was a member of the Salina VFW Post #1432.

Bill was preceded in death by Berniece Leander (Mother), Richard Leander (Father), Jaron Lewis (Sister), Kathryn Queen (Sister), Marla Byquist (Sister).

Larry is survived by his wife Jeanette Leander; Children Chelsy Leander of Gypsum, KS; Others: Katie Rohr (Granddaughter), Ashlynn Rohr (Granddaughter), Kenny Leander (Brother) and spouse Linda, Keith Leander (Brother).

Norma Jean (Jungel) Hahn October 7, 1932 ~ March 31, 2024

Norma Jean Hahn, known to everyone as “Jean” was born to Faye and Harry Jungel on the family farm near New Cambria, KS on October 7, 1932. She grew up milking cows and doing field work with her two sisters, Helen and Betty, and her younger brothers, Marvin and Keith. Jean and her sisters enjoyed hunting and fishing with their dad. The three girls excelled playing in fast pitch softball leagues in the summers.

After graduating from Solomon High, Jean moved to Abilene, KS where she worked as a telephone operator for 7 years. Jean met Leon Hahn in 1953 on a blind date set up by Leon’s sister, Ivalene. They were married Nov. 20, 1954. Jean and Leon lived in Gypsum until 1957 and then moved to the farm in rural Dickinson County, where they raised their family and worked side by side for the next 67 years. Jean helped raise chickens, pigs and cattle with Leon, as well as farming, increasing acreage over their decades of working together. Her artistic talents included painting, embroidery, and quilting. She also sang in the Gypsum United Methodist Church Choir for many years. Jean was a trusted school bus driver for the Southeast of Salina School District for 9 years, retiring once Leon was ready to travel the world. Their travels took them to all 50 states, as well as Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland and Mexico.

Jean and Leon joined the Jolly Mixer’s Dance Club in Salina and were faithful weekly dancers for 34 years, until Jean’s health precluded further dancing four years ago. The multitude of friendships and memories that evolved from the Jolly Mixer’s had a lasting impact on Jeans’ retirement years.

Jean is survived by Leon, her husband of 69 years; daughter, Carol Shearer (John), daughter, Karla Demby (Brian); and son, Randy (Lori); eight grandchildren, Clayton, (Maggie), Mitchell Shearer, Ryan Hahn (Hannah), Jason Hahn (Rachel), Stephen Hahn, Max Demby (Courtney), Rachel Demby and Nicole Demby;and 5 great grandchildren, Addyson and Coralie Shearer, Conley and Easton Hahn, and Blaine Hahn. She has one brother, Keith Jungel.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2024, at the Gypsum Community Church, Gypsum, KS, with the Rev. David Walters officiating. Burial will be in the Gypsum City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 pm Wednesday April 3, 2024 at the Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

She grew up milking cows and doing field work with her two sisters, Helen and Betty, and her younger brothers, Marvin and Keith. Jean and her sisters enjoyed hunting and fishing with their dad. The three girls excelled playing in fast pitch softball leagues in the summers.After graduating from Solomon High, Jean moved to Abilene, KS where she worked as a telephone operator for 7 years. Jean met Leon Hahn in 1953 on a blind date set up by Leon’s sister, Ivalene. They were married Nov. 20, 1954. L. Joan Sample Smith, 86, Minneapolis, died&nbsp;Friday, March&nbsp;29, 2024. Ms. Smith was born July 2, 1937, in Ottawa County to Clyde and&nbsp;Avis Sample.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;life-long&nbsp;nurse, Joan&nbsp;was also an avid dancer who loved to travel.&nbsp;After graduating from Minneapolis High School in 1955, Joan attended Fort Hays State University&nbsp;and&nbsp;graduated with an associate degree in nursing. In the intervening years, Joan lived and practiced in Chicago, Colorado, and Kansas. She returned home&nbsp;to Minneapolis in&nbsp;2002&nbsp;to&nbsp;care for, travel with, and attend local dances with her father.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents,&nbsp;Avis in 1996 and Clyde in 2007.

Survivors are her two&nbsp;daughters,&nbsp;Rhonda&nbsp;Olson&nbsp;of Orlando, Florida;&nbsp;and&nbsp;Shanna&nbsp;Due and husband Jonathan of&nbsp;Williamsburg, Virginia; and three grandchildren, Orin Olson,&nbsp;John Clyde Due and Samantha Lee Due.

B. Wayne Loy, 82, of McPherson, KS, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Pleasant View Home, Inman.

Wayne was born on April 1, 1942, in Garnett, KS, the son of Brock E. and Roberta E. (Lewis) Loy.&nbsp; He graduated from William Chrisman High School (Independence, MO) in 1960 and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Central Missouri State College in 1965.&nbsp; On July 3, 1965, Wayne was united in marriage to Lois Aileen Wolpers in Blackburn, MO.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three sons, David, Stephen, and Andrew.&nbsp; Wayne and Lois were married for 58 years prior to Lois’ passing on January 18, 2024.

Wayne served for 5 ½ years in the United States Air Force Reserve, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.&nbsp; He was an accountant for K-W Dart Truck Company, Kansas Jack, Vanguard Plastics, and Hehr Glass.&nbsp;

As a Boy Scout, he was awarded the Eagle Scout and inducted into the Order of the Arrow.&nbsp; He was a member of &nbsp;American Legion Post #24.&nbsp; He enjoyed holiday family get-togethers, camping, guns, knife collecting, fishing, hunting, archery, bluegrass music festivals, and his beloved dogs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his three sons, David (Mary) Loy of Irvine, CA, Stephen (Jen) Loy of Topeka, KS, and Andrew (Rebecca) Loy of McPherson, KS; and ten grandchildren, Nathan, Catherine, Jonathan, Benjamin, Tyler, Emily, Ayden, Asher, Emmalyn, and Maya.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister, Carol Ann Fitzpatrick.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, April 8, 2024, at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Dale Dumperth officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until service time on Monday at the church.&nbsp; Burial with Military Honors will follow the service at McPherson Cemetery.

Viola was born on July 18, 1943 in Minneapolis, KS to parents Harold Pearl and Rose Mae Hansen Toothman.

Viola worked at various places in town but enjoyed her time at the Salina Country Club the most.

She enjoyed gardening, making wine, loved to cook, canning and had many crafts.

She was preceded in death by Rose Toothman (Mother), Harold Toothman (Father), Joe Whittington (Son), Carl Toothman (Brother), Dean Toothman (Brother).

Donald Craig Stolzenburg June 18, 1952 ~ April 2, 2024

Donald Craig Stolzenburg, age 71, entered into rest on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at his residence in Ames, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp; He was born on June 18, 1952, in Concordia, Kansas, to Loy Eldon and Ellen Faye (DeWitt) Stolzenburg.

Don attended school in Agenda while growing up, and he received his GED from the Nazareth Mother House and was very proud of this accomplishment.

Don’s first marriage was to Mary Joan Copple.&nbsp;&nbsp;He later married Lana Jo Breault, January 28, 1989, in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was a member of the Victory Faith Church in Concordia.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don had recently celebrated his 37 years of sobriety which started in 1987.&nbsp;&nbsp;He took one day at a time and was very proud of his achievement.

Together with Lana they ministered over 350 foster children giving them love and care for over 30 years.

Don had a love for music all his life and played in his bands for many years throughout his life.&nbsp;&nbsp;He learned how to play music from his beloved father Eldon who played the steel guitar and watching and learning to play music by ear without sheet music.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don played in several of his bands and was lead vocal and lead guitar player for the Salt Creek Playboys (his first band), Driftwood, Pick and Stick, and Cripple Creek Bands.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don was a true musician and entertainer, having played at many venues throughout his career.

Don worked at Concordia Technologies, previously Alstom and Abrams.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don had a love for racing and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.&nbsp;&nbsp;His hobbies included working on transmissions and watching his work perform on various tracks over the years.&nbsp;&nbsp;He loved giving rides to the children in his handmade train and tractor he rebuilt.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don also loved tractor pulls, but most of all he loved spending time with his beloved family and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was The Man, The Myth, and The Legend.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don will be forever missed.

 </figure>Donald Craig Stolzenburg June 18, 1952 ~ April 2, 2024Donald Craig Stolzenburg, age 71, entered into rest on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at his residence in Ames, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp; He was born on June 18, 1952, in Concordia, Kansas, to Loy Eldon and Ellen Faye (DeWitt) Stolzenburg.Don attended school in Agenda while growing up, and he received his GED from the Nazareth Mother House and was very proud of this accomplishment.Don’s first marriage was to Mary Joan Copple.&nbsp;&nbsp;He later married Lana Jo Breault, January 28, 1989, in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp;He was a member of the Victory Faith Church in Concordia.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don had recently celebrated his 37 years of sobriety which started in 1987.&nbsp;&nbsp;He took one day at a time and was very proud of his achievement.Together with Lana they ministered over 350 foster children giving them love and care for over 30 years.Don had a love for music all his life and played in his bands for many years throughout his life.&nbsp;&nbsp;He learned how to play music from his beloved father Eldon who played the steel guitar and watching and learning to play music by ear without sheet music.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don played in several of his bands and was lead vocal and lead guitar player for the Salt Creek Playboys (his first band), Driftwood, Pick and Stick, and Cripple Creek Bands.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don was a true musician and entertainer, having played at many venues throughout his career.Don worked at Concordia Technologies, previously Alstom and Abrams.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don had a love for racing and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.&nbsp;&nbsp;His hobbies included working on transmissions and watching his work perform on various tracks over the years.&nbsp;&nbsp;He loved giving rides to the children in his handmade train and tractor he rebuilt.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don also loved tractor pulls, but most of all he loved spending time with his beloved family and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was The Man, The Myth, and The Legend.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don will be forever missed.Survivors include his wife Lana Stolzenburg of 35 years of the home in Ames, KS; daughter, Kellea (Mark) Smith, Minneapolis, KS; and their children, Jessica (Tyrel) Owens, Minneapolis, KS; Kassi (Scott) Jones, Salina, KS; Sheyanne (Alijah) Krier, Beloit, KS; Zachary (Lauren) Smith, Minneapolis, KS; daughter, Tonya (Greg) Deneault, Concordia, KS; and their children, Cody (Tabitha) Deneault, Belleville, KS; Brad (Darci) Deneault, Marysville, KS; Dalton (Autumn) Forshee, Aurora, KS; Isaiah (Patience) Deneault, Concordia, KS; Corporal Christian Hanson of the US Marine Corp., San Diego, CA; Jena Hanson, Concordia, KS; Brantlee Deneault, Concordia, KS; Ryker Deneault, Concordia, KS; son, Devin Stolzenburg, Clyde, KS; daughter, Tristan (Matthew) Istas, Clyde, KS; and their children, Stella, Helen and Dawson Istas; daughter, Sabrina (Trenton) Willis, Clyde, KS; and their children, Ramira Dyke, Ronan Willis and Remington Willis; daughter, Desiree Stolzenburg and her child La’Keeta Grann, Beaverton, AL; a grandchild, Julian Nulf and his adopted parents Jeremy and Megan Nulf all of Jewell, KS; and 14 great-grandchildrenHe was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jim Stolzenburg, sister-in-law, Mary Mar Stolzenburg.Don’s wishes were to be cremated.A visitation with family receiving friends will be held from 6-8 pm on Thursday evening, April 4, 2024, at the Victory Faith Church in Concordia.A Celebration of Life Service will be held on April 5, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., at the Brown Grand Theatre, Concordia, Kansas with Pastors Ron Elsasser, Rick Barrett and Earl Hale officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Don’s family invites family and friends after the Celebration of Life Service to a luncheon at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Aurora.The family suggests memorials to the Donald Stolzenburg memorial fund in care of Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, PO Box 606, Concordia, KS 66901.&nbsp;&nbsp;For online condolences please visit&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chaputbuoy.com">www.chaputbuoy.com</a>.READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/783c1fe3-e015-41d1-a6c5-235764b2f91c">Salina non-profit leader wins 2024 Remarkable Women award</a>

Karen Deanne (Lupher) Adams August 12, 1939 ~ March 30, 2024

Karen Deanne (Lupher) Adams, age 84, passed away on March 30, 2024, at her home in Wichita, KS, with her loving son Ronald and granddaughters Jennifer and Ashleigh by her side.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Washington.&nbsp;A funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Greenleaf, KS. Burial will be in Greenleaf City Cemetery.

Karen was born on August 12, 1939 to Clovis (Kelly) and Irma Lupher. She attended Fairview, a small country school, and later graduated from Greenleaf High School in 1957.

She was baptized on August 27, 1939 at St Peters Lutheran Church, Barnes KS and confirmed March 29, 1953 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Greenleaf KS.

Karen was one of the most popular and prettiest girls in high school. She was nominated homecoming royalty throughout her high school years and was also selected to be in theWashington County Beauty Contest. Out of the 13 towns in Washington County, Karen was the one selected from Greenleaf.

At the age of 18 Karen left the family home and attended Weaver Airline School in Kansas City. After graduating she was sent to Washington DC to work for Eastern Airlines. This is where she met her husband, Richard. Karen left the airlines and moved to Richmond VA where she worked as a teletype operator for several years. She later became a bus driver, which would beher love, for over 53 years.

Karen and Richard were married on May 4, 1958 after four short months of dating. They have three boys; Richard (Rick), Rodney and Ronald. Karen was blessed with two beautiful granddaughters, Jennifer Brooke and Ashleigh Elyse. Jennifer and Ashleigh meant the world to her. She always enjoyed their visits and couldn’t wait until she could see them again.

In the late 1990s Karen and Richard moved to Salina KS to be closer to her family. Richard had never been to Kansas and promised Karen that she would return once he retired. Karen continued driving a bus after their move for Heartland Early Education in Salina until she was 82. The kids meant as much to her as Ms. Karen did to the children. She also volunteered at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina where she could attend concerts and fulfill her love of music. She attended Christ the King Lutheran Church in Salina. It was not unusual to see Karen and Richard attend George Jones concerts together. In 2023 she moved to Wichita KS to live closer to her son Ronald.

Karen had many talents. She was named “mother of the year” when her boys were little. She was a wonderful seamstress, made beautiful ceramics and endless pieces of immaculate cross stitch; some taking her years to complete. Karen was a stunning lady, beautiful both inside and out. Folks would comment on her beauty wherever she went. Her son Ronald even mentioned how strangers would come up to her just to mention her beauty. Karen had a short modeling career at the young age of 70, modeling for Christopher &amp; Banks. She was so humble and kind to everyone she met and had a heart of gold.

Karen’s family meant the world to her. Karen was the oldest of 10 siblings and would take care of the younger kids for her momma Irma. Karen claimed her brother Fred as being her baby; they continued this close bond to the very end. Karen and her mom had a very special relationship, only being 16 years apart, they were very good friends. She loved all of her siblings dearly, which was the reason for her and Richard moving back to Kansas. She enjoyed every minute she could spend with them where they would laugh until they hurt. Karen shared many stories about when they were younger; she would make her younger sisters go to the outhouse with her in the middle of the night because she didn’t want to go alone. She’d make them count to 100, if she wasn’t ready to go back in they’d have to count to 100 again. Another was when she would come in at night, she would put her cold feet on Myrna and Linda’s back to warm them up. They couldn’t move until her feet were warm.

In her last days, laying in her hospital bed at home, she asked Myrna to crawl into the bed with her. This was nothing unusual for the Lupher kids. Six of the kids were in two tiny bedrooms upstairs in their farmhouse. Karen and Linda had to share one full bed while Vicki and Myrnahad a single size bed in the same room. Gale and Fred shared the other bedroom with only a curtain separating them. Though times were rough for them growing up, they always had each other and their friendships grew throughout the years.

Karen was preceded in death by her husband Richard, parents Kelly and Irma Lupher, brother-in-law’s Kenny Tiemeyer and Stanley Mueller, niece Kelli Lynn Cairns, nephew Todd Cairns.
