Jose Colunga January 20, 1957 ~ June 20, 2024

Jose Colunga, 67, of Salina, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Smoky Hill Health and Rehab in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp;

Jose was born the son of Felix and Crusita (Lopez) Colunga on 1/20/1957 in Seguin, Texas. At the young age of five years old, Jose’s parents divorced and he spent eight years at the Sts. Peter and Joseph Orphanage.&nbsp; In 1974, his sister Mary and husband, Richard, became his guardians and were able to raise him in their home.&nbsp; He lived with them for many years, even after his high school graduation from Jack C. Hays High School in Buda, Texas, on May 26, 1977.&nbsp;

There was nothing more that he loved than being called “Uncle Joe!” and being smothered in love by his multiple nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was fun loving and a practical jokester.&nbsp; He looked to Mary and Richard’s kids as a friend and brother, more so than nieces and nephews.&nbsp; One of their favorite memories is Uncle Joe coming early in the mornings on Easter.&nbsp; He enjoyed hiding eggs filled with money.&nbsp; He was fun to be around.&nbsp;

Jose always worked in restaurants as a cook and assisted others any way he could.&nbsp; This was his profession until he became ill post motorcycle accident.&nbsp; After the wreck, he then moved to Wakefield, Kansas to be cared for by his brother, Sam. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Jose loved his Dallas Cowboys as well as fishing, cooking, swimming and doing art work as a self-taught artist.&nbsp; He was baptized at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in San Antonio, Tx.&nbsp;

As of late, he especially enjoyed his outings with his Interim Hospice team as they would visit his favorite restaurants. &nbsp; The incredibly compassionate and caring staff at Smoky Hill Health and Rehab went above &amp; beyond in caring for him over the last several years not only with their cares, but doing things on their personal time to please his tummy with all the food he wanted. Jose also appreciated the care that was given to him by Kim Rayas.Survivors include his brothers and sisters Mary Duecker (Richard) of Kyle, TexasDolores Vega of Cibolo, Tx., Irene Saldana (Ruben) Seguin, Texas, Samuel Colunga (Mieko Falk) Winfield, Kansas, John Colunga (Cynthia) Buda, Texas and Robert Perez (Sandra) San Antonio, Texas; along with numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; His guardian and special friend, Kim Rayas of Salina.&nbsp;Jose is preceded in death by his parents; and brothers and sisters: Maria Louis Saldana ,Felix Colunga, Margarita Colunga and Gilbert Colunga.

Memorial services will be on&nbsp;Saturday, June 29th at 3:00 P.M. at Smoky Hill Health and Rehab in Salina. You are encouraged to wear your Dallas Cowboys or favorite NFL team attire.Private inurnment will be at Gypsum Hill Cemetery in Salina.

Stephen H. Barkley January 30, 1958 ~&nbsp;June 23, 2024

Stephen H. Barkley, 66, lifelong Salina area resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born on January 30, 1958 in Salina, the son of Robert and Julia Berigan Barkley.&nbsp; Steve was a devoted husband, father, and papa.

Steve was raised in Salina where he graduated from Salina South High School in 1976.&nbsp; He married Kimberly Mae Prater on March 23, 1985 in Salina.&nbsp; They had one daughter, Jessica (granddaughter Bayleigh) and son, Matthew.

Steve was a man of many talents and boundless energy.&nbsp;Through the years he had worked at Great Plains Manufacturing and was a cattle rancher at Rolling Hills Ranch before starting his own construction business and doing trim carpentry.

Survivors include his wife Kim of the home; daughter Jessica J. Barkley Kercahl and granddaughter Bayleigh M. Kerchal; son Matthew S Barkley all of Salina.

He is also survived by his sister Michelle (Kevin) Nicolay of Augusta, KS., brothers, Rob Barkley of Kanopolis, KS., Bryon (Lori) Barkley of Nipomo, CA., and Chris Barkley of Salina, KS.&nbsp; Along with a host of friends and family who will miss him dearly.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents Bob and Judy Barkley and brother, Kerry Barkley.

Stephen H Barkley will be remembered for his dedication, kindness, and the love he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.&nbsp; He will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our memories.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at Crossroads Church 1125 W. South Street Salina, KS. on Friday June 28th at 10am.&nbsp;

In lieu of flowers, Steve would love donations be made to Children’s Cancer Research or American Heart Association.

Howard Eugene “Bud” Elkins, Jr. August 14, 1929 ~&nbsp;June 17, 2024

Howard Eugene “Bud” Elkins, Jr. age 94, of Mankato, Kansas, peacefully left our world to be welcomed by Jesus and his loved ones in Heaven on June 17, 2024.

Bud was born to Howard and Josephine (Stevenson) Elkins in Paola, KS on August 14, 1929.&nbsp; Bud grew up on the farm which would become the Wakefield Arboretum with his two brothers, Robert (Donetta) and Richard (d. 2023) (Arlene)&nbsp;Elkins, and&nbsp;graduated from Wakefield High School in 1947.

Bud married his high school sweetheart Deane Settles (d. 1973) in December of 1946.&nbsp; To this union three children were born: Cathie Jo Bird (William d. 1998) of Pioneer, Tennessee; Pennie Kay Close (David d. 2010); and Robert “Bob” Timothy McDonald (Colette) of&nbsp;Allenspark, Colorado.&nbsp; The couple went their separate ways in 1956.&nbsp;

Bud married the love of his life, Sandra “Kay” Berry on September 7, 1957.&nbsp; The couple moved frequently during their marriage, spending&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;years in Wakefield, Kansas, and Franklin, Nebraska, then settled down in Mankato, Kansas in 1976, where they lived out the rest of their lives. Bud and Kay raised five children; Stephen Elkins (Debbie) of Wichita, KS; Kimberly Elkins Pierce (Henry), Joel Elkins (Janie Tyler), Shena Elkins Colson (Gary) all of Mankato; and Shane Elkins (Brenda) of&nbsp;Assaria, Kansas.&nbsp; Kay went to be with the Lord in 2018.

During his younger years, Bud was a member of the Congregational Church of Wakefield. In 1967 he was confirmed into the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mankato and was a dedicated member of that church until the end of his life. Bud’s devotion to God and his family were of utmost importance in his life.&nbsp; He served the Church as a frequent usher, a member of various boards, and as President of the Church Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bud will always be remembered for his unwavering work ethic. He began his career with Alsop Sand in&nbsp;1956, and&nbsp;went on to become a manager of several of their sand/cement plants, finally retiring in 2015 at the age of 86.&nbsp; Bud was respected by all that knew him, and most often described as humble, honest, kind and giving.

Bud is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Donetta Elkins, sister-in-law Arlene (widow of brother Dick Elkins), many nieces and nephews, and an impressive progeny of grand- and great-grandchildren:

Howard E. “Bud” Elkins, Jr.

John Rabun Fletcher July 4, 1964 ~&nbsp;June 20, 2024

John Rabun Fletcher, 59, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2024 at his home.

John was born July 4, 1964 in Amarillo, Texas.&nbsp; He was one of three children born to Dick and Betty (Rabun) Fletcher.&nbsp; He grew up in Goodland, Kansas, and graduated from Goodland High School in the Class of ’82.

John was united in marriage to Heather Werner on June 11, 2004 in Russell.&nbsp; They made their home in Russell.

John served the citizens of Russell County as a civil servant for forty years, most recently as the former Russell County Administrator from 2013 to 2024, until his retirement on March 1.&nbsp; Before that he was the Governor Selection to be the Russell County Sheriff in 1999, and then was re-elected as Sheriff until his retirement in 2015.&nbsp; Prior to serving as the Sheriff, John worked as an EMT and Jailer for Russell County and later was a patrolman for the City of Russell in 1988 until his appointment as Sheriff.&nbsp; In 2008, he graduated from the FBI National Academy Program, Quantico, Virginia.&nbsp; John was past president of the Kansas Sheriffs’ Association and after his retirement as Sheriff, he served as the Deputy Director of the Kansas Sheriffs’ Association until his death.

He was a member and past ruler of the Russell Elks Lodge, Kiwanis Club of Russell, the Economic Development Board, past member of the Russell City Fire Department and served eight years on the USD Board of Education.

John enjoyed doing yardwork (no joke!), he took great pride in maintaining his yard, and could often be seen mowing in “road gear”.&nbsp; In his spare time, he enjoyed trips to the casino, playing golf, shooting, and cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, Texas Tech University and Kansas State University.

John had a gift in his ability to make those around him feel safe.&nbsp; He was kind, reliable, and the voice of reason.&nbsp; The calm during the storm, and a pillar of strength to many in their times of darkness.&nbsp; He was a great listener, and could be a man of few words, but he was also lighthearted, enjoyed a good joke, and had a great laugh.&nbsp;

John’s surviving family include his wife and best friend of 20 years, Heather of the home; daughter, Jessica Fletcher-Sudlow (Ryan) of Enid, Oklahoma; son, Justice Becker of Wichita, Kansas; brother, Rick Fletcher (Kelly) of Austin, Texas; sister, Kandi Zimmerman (Mark) of Abeline, Texas; and two grandchildren, Tristan and Willow.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents.

Celebration of John’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Russell County Area Community Foundation (RCACF) in John’s name. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.

 </figure>John Rabun Fletcher July 4, 1964 ~&nbsp;June 20, 2024 John Rabun Fletcher, 59, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2024 at his home.John was born July 4, 1964 in Amarillo, Texas.&nbsp; He was one of three children born to Dick and Betty (Rabun) Fletcher.&nbsp; He grew up in Goodland, Kansas, and graduated from Goodland High School in the Class of ’82.John was united in marriage to Heather Werner on June 11, 2004 in Russell.&nbsp; They made their home in Russell.John served the citizens of Russell County as a civil servant for forty years, most recently as the former Russell County Administrator from 2013 to 2024, until his retirement on March 1.&nbsp; Before that he was the Governor Selection to be the Russell County Sheriff in 1999, and then was re-elected as Sheriff until his retirement in 2015.&nbsp; Prior to serving as the Sheriff, John worked as an EMT and Jailer for Russell County and later was a patrolman for the City of Russell in 1988 until his appointment as Sheriff.&nbsp; In 2008, he graduated from the FBI National Academy Program, Quantico, Virginia.&nbsp; John was past president of the Kansas Sheriffs’ Association and after his retirement as Sheriff, he served as the Deputy Director of the Kansas Sheriffs’ Association until his death.He was a member and past ruler of the Russell Elks Lodge, Kiwanis Club of Russell, the Economic Development Board, past member of the Russell City Fire Department and served eight years on the USD Board of Education.John enjoyed doing yardwork (no joke!), he took great pride in maintaining his yard, and could often be seen mowing in “road gear”.&nbsp; In his spare time, he enjoyed trips to the casino, playing golf, shooting, and cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, Texas Tech University and Kansas State University.John had a gift in his ability to make those around him feel safe.&nbsp; He was kind, reliable, and the voice of reason.&nbsp; The calm during the storm, and a pillar of strength to many in their times of darkness.&nbsp; He was a great listener, and could be a man of few words, but he was also lighthearted, enjoyed a good joke, and had a great laugh.&nbsp;John’s surviving family include his wife and best friend of 20 years, Heather of the home; daughter, Jessica Fletcher-Sudlow (Ryan) of Enid, Oklahoma; son, Justice Becker of Wichita, Kansas; brother, Rick Fletcher (Kelly) of Austin, Texas; sister, Kandi Zimmerman (Mark) of Abeline, Texas; and two grandchildren, Tristan and Willow.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents.Celebration of John’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Russell County Area Community Foundation (RCACF) in John’s name. Janice I. Dickinson, 86, of rural Gorham, Kansas, died on&nbsp;June 20, 2024,&nbsp;at&nbsp;the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Janice was born on July 23, 1937, in Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of James Frank and Buleau (Silkman) Miller. &nbsp;She grew up in Manhattan, Kansas, and graduated from Manhattan High School in the class of 1956. &nbsp;She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Robert Louis Dickinson on October 21, 1956, in Manhattan. &nbsp;From this union Janice and Robert were blessed with 4 children, Kirk, Sheryl, Valerie and Cathy.&nbsp;&nbsp;She worked with her husband on the family farm and as&nbsp;a&nbsp;homemaker raising their growing&nbsp;family. &nbsp;She also worked for many years as a&nbsp;paraprofessional educator&nbsp;with the Hays School District USD #489&nbsp;in Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;

She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hays&nbsp;and was a former 4-H leader. &nbsp;She enjoyed sewing, cooking, teaching Sunday school at church, working with 4-H and tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. &nbsp;Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her&nbsp;four children,&nbsp;Robert&nbsp;Kirk Dickinson and wife Coleen of Gorham, Kansas, Sheryl Wambold and husband Bill of Wasco, Oregon, Valerie Kostelansky and husband Bruce of Ft. Maclead, Canada and Cathy Musick and husband Doug of&nbsp;Lawrence, Kansas;&nbsp;sister Lea Piper of New Mexico;&nbsp;11 grandchildren&nbsp;and 6 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her&nbsp;parents, husband Robert on September 15, 2010, sister Jean DeLong and brother Durry Robbins

A memorial service to celebrate Janice’s life will be held at&nbsp;2:30 P.M. on&nbsp;Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the New Life Church in Natoma, Kansas. &nbsp;Cremation has been selected by the family and inurnment of the cremains will be held at the Natoma City Cemetery immediately following the services&nbsp;at the&nbsp;church. &nbsp;Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of&nbsp;Natoma, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Rhoda Mae Martin September 18, 1949 ~ June 19, 2024

Rhoda Mae Martin, 74, of Princeton, KS passed away Wednesday June 19, 2024 at her home surrounded by family.&nbsp; She was born September 18, 1949 in Emporia, Kansas the daughter of Glenn Gilbert and Goldena (Cornwell) Gilbert.&nbsp;

Rhoda graduated from Washington High School, Kansas City, KS with the class of 1967.&nbsp; She then graduated from Kansas State University receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree.

In 1972 Rhoda became the Art Teacher for Central Heights High School.&nbsp; She worked there until 1978.&nbsp; From that time on she was a full time mother and wife while also having jobs for a short time at the Post Office, Elizabeth Layton Center and finally, she worked at Arvest Bank for a number of years, which allowed Fred to serve as a vocational Youth Pastor at Ottawa Bible Church.&nbsp;

Rhoda loved her family and loved spending time with them.&nbsp; She was a faithful member of Ottawa Bible Church and was very active in the church with volunteer efforts over the years.&nbsp; Rhoda and Fred were passionate about youth ministry and served together throughout their marriage, impacting the lives of many teens and young adults.&nbsp; She loved the Lord and was always taking opportunities to spread the Gospel.

On August 15, 1970 Rhoda was united in marriage to Fred R Martin in Kansas City, KS.&nbsp; They shared over fifty-three years of marriage.&nbsp; Fred survives of their home in Princeton.

She is also survived by her children, Reuben G. Martin, Kansas City, MO, Brooke L. Mills Ottawa, KS, Seth B. Martin and his wife, Rachel, Colorado Springs, CO, Caleb D. Martin and his wife, Jenny, Fayetteville, AR; two sisters, Connie Bilyeu and her husband, Roy, Overland Park, KS, Roxy O’Dea and her husband, Brad, Ottawa, KS; and five grandchildren, Glenna Mills, Levi Mills, Eden Martin, Finnegan Martin, and Asher Martin.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and a sister Glynis D Gilbert.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday June 24, 2024 at Ottawa Bible Church, Ottawa, KS.&nbsp; Interment will follow at Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, KS.&nbsp; The family will receive friends for a visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, June 23, 2024 at the Ottawa Bible Church.&nbsp; Memorial contributions may be made to the Ottawa Bible Church and sent in c/o the Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, P.O. Travis Alan Flasschoen November 18, 1982 ~ June 20, 2024

Travis’ life began on November 18, 1982, in Newton. He was the son of Jaymes Lee Flasschoen and Cyndi Dee (Newfield) Easterberg. Travis was a 2001 graduate of Peabody-Burns High School. While in school, Travis played trombone in the band, playing baseball and was a member of the swim team. After graduation, Travis took a job with Artisan Fabrication in Springfield, MO. until a series of health conditions made it impossible for him to work. Travis was united in marriage to Sarah (Dunfield) McAuley on February 1, 2022, in Wichita and they have a young son Trip Flasschoen. Travis loved to hunt and shoot guns with his son and brother. They would often go kayaking or fishing together. Travis would initiate random car trips to just go explore the area with his family and he truly would do anything for anyone at any time. He build sheds, gazebos and chicken coops for neighbors and an anniversary hall tree for Sarah. Building things was the way Travis showed he cared for you. Travis died on Thursday June 20, 2024, in an auto accident not far from his Florence home. He is survived by his wife Sarah McAuley of Florence, son Trip Flasschoen of Florence, his mother Cyndi (Jesse) Easterberg of Peabody, grandmother Jean Schroeder of Peabody, siblings Chad (Missy Dean) Flasschoen of Wichita, Deidra (AJ) Wallin of Ider, AL and Anna (Dylan) Crichton of Sarina, Queensland, Australia; nieces and nephews Elizabeth, Addie, Ali, Bella, Aralyn, Skylynn, Taytum and Blayne. He is preceded in death by his father Jaymes L. Flasschoen, grandfather Rudy Newfield and aunt Patty Smith. His family will gather with friends on Sunday June 30, 2024, from 4-6 p.m. at Yazel Megli Funeral Home, Marion. Vida Mae Taylor, 102, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Friday, June 21st, at Reflections Retirement Resort, Salina, Kansas where she resided for the past four years.

Vida and her identical twin sister, Vera, were born in Quinter, Kansas on June 14,1922 to the late Fern (Watts) and Solon Elice Merica. Vida graduated from Winona High School before attending Fort Hays State Teachers College. Vida went on to teach school in Kansas until moving to Wichita in her early twenties where she met and married Firmie “Bud” Taylor, Jr. Serving as an Army wife until the end of World War II. Vida and Bud then moved to Western Kansas and began a life of living off the land and raising three children, teaching them the value of honesty, integrity, and hard work.

Vida was often described as a “classy lady” by those who knew her. She was kind and loyal to all who were fortunate to call her their friend. Vida was meticulous about her physical appearance and loved dressing well and never “having a hair out of place.”

Vida was preceded in death by her husband, Firmie “Bud” Taylor, Jr. in 1981 and her parents, three brothers and one sister.

She is survived by her twin sister, Vera Fox of Seattle; and her children, Phyllis Pickel (Tom) of Salina, Kansas, Melvin Taylor (Lee) of Milligan, Nebraska, and Wade Taylor (Sherry) of Baldwin City, Kansas.

Surviving grandchildren, Amy Purcell, Garrett Taylor (Brooke), Lisa Taylor, Aaron Taylor (Kim), Ryan Taylor (Anne); ten great grandchildren; and family friend Barb Chaffee.

Vida's wishes were to be cremated and graveside services will be held at the Winona Cemetery, Winona, Kansas at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 28.

Quentin "Bill" VanMeter June 14, 1953 - June 21, 2024

Bill VanMeter 71, of Pilot Grove, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

Bill was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on June 14th, 1953. He was the only son to the late Eldon W. VanMeter and Phyllis F. Launder.

Bill enlisted in the US Army in 1971. He was stationed overseas in Germany twice and stateside at Fort Riley, Kansas, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Fort Benning, Georgia; and for his last duty at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He served his country during wartime. He sustained an active role in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Bill held the final rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC) E-7. During his military career, Bill received numerous military awards and honors to include the Army Commendation medal, Drill instructor identification badge, Expert Infantry badge, Southwest Asia service award and Army Achievement medal to name a few.

Survivors include his wife, Wendy (Shelly) VanMeter; daughters, Michelle Devore (Cory) of Atlanta, Georgia, Daughter Wendy Deuschle (Tim) of Boonville, Missouri, Jenna VanMeter of Wichita, Kansas, Kristal Zimmerman (Josh) of Wichita, Kansas; and son, Johnathan VanMeter (Sindy) of Boca Raton, Florida.

He was stationed overseas in Germany twice and stateside at Fort Riley, Kansas, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Fort Benning, Georgia; and for his last duty at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.He served his country during wartime. He sustained an active role in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Bill held the final rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC) E-7. Rev. Philip N. Youngquist, Jr., age 92, of Lindsborg, Kansas, died at Lindsborg Community Hospital on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

Philip was born on October 19, 1931 in Ada, Minnesota. Philip received his education at Luther Academy and Junior College at Wahoo, Nebraska (May 1950), Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas (1952) and Augustana Theological Seminary, Rock Island, Illinois (1956).

Survivors: wife, Marilyn Youngquist, Lindsborg, KS; son, Kenneth Youngquist and wife Debra, Bartlett, TN; daughter, Kathryn Thurlow and husband Lynn, Lindsborg, KS; son, Pastor Mark Youngquist and wife Pastor Connie Spitzak, Coralville, IA, and son, John Youngquist and wife Lisa, Ozark, MO; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

Philip was an ordained minister through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.&nbsp; During his years preaching the gospel, he served as pastor at Bethel Lutheran Church, Herndon, KS; Fridhem Lutheran Church, Funk, NE; Good Shepard Lutheran Church, Washington, KS; Hebron Lutheran Church, Burdick, KS; Marion Hill Lutheran Church, White City; St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Great Bend, KS; First Lutheran Church, Morganville, KS; St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linn, KS; Zion Lutheran Church, Clyde, KS; and St. John Lutheran Church, Salina, KS (visitation pastor).&nbsp; Outside the church, Philip helped start a Boy Scout Troup as served as a leader in Funk, NE and also in Washington, KS.

Leisure activities for Philip included golfing, fishing, camping, cheering for Nebraska “Big Red” football, reading, and traveling on bus trips.

Philip wrote in his memoirs “for to God belongs all the glory for what His grace has accomplished in my life.&nbsp; I am eternally grateful to Him for the blessings He has provided through my family and life experiences”.&nbsp;

Morris was born on September 26, 1941 in Salina, KS to parents Edward Eugene and Geraldine Irene (Shelton) Henry.

Morris retired as a Supervisor for the City of Salina Water Department.

Morris had been a former Saline County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy and participated in various pistol shoots including the KPOA Bullseye Shoot. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. Morris was a lifetime member of the NRA and the Quivira Gun Club where he taught women’s pistol self defense.

Betty Jean Mears, 85, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Friday, June 21, 2024, surrounded by family at The Cedars, McPherson.&nbsp;

She was born July 11, 1938, in McPherson, KS, the daughter of Charles Harris Greeley Thomas and Nannie Elgiva (Ruth) Thomas.&nbsp; Betty Jean graduated from McPherson High School and attended The University of Wichita.&nbsp; She worked at Farmers Alliance Mutual Insurance, the McPherson County Tag Dept., CertainTeed, and MAPCO.

Betty Jean met Clayton Mears in 1957, and they were married in McPherson on March 2, 1958.&nbsp; The couple continued to live in McPherson and raise their two children, Brad and Sheryl.&nbsp; Betty Jean and Clayton were married for 62 years prior to Clayton’s passing on August 7, 2020.

After retirement, Betty Jean and Clayton enjoyed retirement on Beaver Lake in Northwest Arkansas, later moving to Rogers, AR, Webb City, MO, and El Dorado, KS.&nbsp; Following Clayton’s passing, Betty Jean moved back to McPherson.&nbsp; She was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Nannie Thomas, husband Clayton Mears, and siblings Donald Thomas, Dorothy Rainwater, Nelson Thomas, Melvin Thomas, and Marilyn Brucker.&nbsp;

Betty Jean is survived by her son Brad Mears (Diane) of McPherson, daughter Sheryl Dennett (Mark) of Valley Center, grandchildren David Mears (Erica) of Wichita, Elizabeth Mears of Bel Aire, Matthew Dennett (Raven) of Valley Center, Andrew Dennett (Raegen) of Wichita, and Rachel Drummond (Nate) of Wichita, great-grandchildren Oliver Mears and Houston Mears, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sheryl Louise Tatro was born April 22, 1950, in Beloit, Kansas.&nbsp; She died June 20, 2024, in Beloit.&nbsp; The daughter of Lorn B. and Charlene (Belden) Schmidt, Sherry married Francis Harmen Tatro on August 22, 1970.&nbsp; The union led to three sons: Clayton (wife Melissa) of Cimarron, Kansas; Beau (wife Stephanie) of Manhattan, Kansas; and Thayne (wife Misti) of Fairbury, Nebraska, as well as eight grandchildren among the three families.

Sherry was exceptionally proud of her family and all their involvements and accomplishments.&nbsp; She was a strong role model for her sons, a doting grandma, and a dedicated wife.&nbsp; She was a caretaker in every sense of the word – with her own family as well as many of her boys’ childhood friends.

Sherry’s career revolved around elementary education.&nbsp; She spent the majority of her career teaching 3rd&nbsp;grade and then Title 1 reading and math.

She is respected and remembered for her leadership in multiple community events and activities including Cloud County Fair Queen Coordinator, Cub Scout Den Mother, GHS Alumni Banquet, Glasco Public Library Board, Glasco Fun Day Coordinator, and Meals on Wheels.&nbsp; She was appreciative of small-town life and happy to call Glasco, Kansas, her home.

She thoroughly enjoyed supporting the activities of her grandchildren.&nbsp; Spending time with the grandchildren in many ways – going to the Hodge Podge and the park, attending athletic events, concerts and performances – was a priority.&nbsp; Playing cards and sharing stories was a true joy.&nbsp; She relished cooking and baking to feed families and friends.

Sherry was preceded in death by her father Lorn B. Schmidt and her husband Francis Tatro. She is survived in death by her mother Charlene (Schmidt) Mortimer; brothers Lorn J. Schmidt (wife Jean) and Stan Schmidt (wife Leann); sons Clayton (wife Melissa), Beau (wife Stephanie), and Thayne (wife Misti); and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25th, at Wilson Family Funeral Home in Minneapolis. Ronald Ray Drummond, 89, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, June 19th, 2024.

Ronald was born in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas on February 24, 1935, a son of Velma Lucille (Pyle) and Lee Avon Drummond.

He served in the United States Army.&nbsp;Ron worked at Exline and was in Research and Development, was a member of Prairie Long Rifles Club, and volunteered for over 30 years at the Larned National Historic Site.

Survivors include his wife, Myrna; daughter, Kimberly Dykes (Brent), of Salina, Kansas; grandson, Jimmy Furgison (Lezlie); granddaughter, Teasha; and 8 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Leola Free; and son, Todd Drummond.

Cremation was chosen and a memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, June 26th at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home with Pastor Kirk Sticker officiating.

Fay Ann Sechtem February 3, 1939 ~ June 18, 2024

Fay Ann Sechtem, age 85, entered into rest on June 18, 2024, at Park Villa Nursing Home in Clyde, Kansas. She was born on February 3, 1939, in Omaha, Nebraska to Ernest and Olga (Hansen) Thomas. Fay was a graduate of Russell High School, Russell, Kansas, Class of 1957. She received her bachelor’s degree in education at Kearney State College in 1972.

Fay married Everett Sechtem, on March 30, 1959, in Russell, Kansas. To this union four children were born, Steve, Weston, Wendy, and Wade. In 1970, the family moved to Kearney, Nebraska, where Fay and Everett started their careers and bought their first home. In this home they raised their family, and Fay remained for 54 years. This home was filled with love and was surrounded by good caring neighbors whom mom adored and cherished. Fay worked as a teacher and then Director at Mid Nebraska Child Development Center until 1979. She worked as a social worker for Social Services until she retired in 1993.

During her work years, she met her best friend, Jill Stump. Fay often talked about how in life you only need one true good friend to help you get through it and Jill was that friend. Their friendship has lasted over 50 years.

She is welcomed to her eternal life by her heavenly family, her husband, Everett, her parents, Ernest and Olga, her brother, Don, and her sons, Steve and Wade, and many more friends and family members.

She is survived by her son, Weston Sechtem, of Independence, MO, daughter Wendy (Bill) Genereux, of Clyde, KS, daughter-in-law CheriLea Sechtem, of Battlefield, MO, and grandchildren, Lacey, Jordan, Heather, Isaac, Emily, Owen, Thomas and 6 great grandchildren.

Her philosophy on life was “Keep It Simple.”

It only takes a few words to describe Fay..... strong, fiercely independent, practical, kind and loyal.

Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at the Russell City Cemetery, Russell Kansas with Pastor Teresa Sutherlin officiating.

Cathy’s life began on January 22, 1949, in Herington. She was the daughter of Andrew John and Thelma Marie (Clore) Biehler. Cathy was a 1967 graduate of Herington High School and briefly attended beauty school. She was a professional seamstress, working for stores such as Kern’s Men’s Shop, and Henry’s Department Stores. Cathy is survived by her sister Carol (Marvin) Tajchman, brothers John Biehler, Vince (Cindy) Biehler, Tom (Kathy) Biehler and Brian (Jeanne) Biehler; nieces and nephews Terrill, Andy, and Ellen Biehler, Jerry and Clare Morrisey, Kevin, Donna, and Danica Dix, Todd and Clint Biehler, Toby and Troy Biehler, Jason, Scott and Angie Tajchman, and Aundrea, Cierra, and Bricen Biehler; 26 great nieces and nephews and 10 great great nieces and nephews. Cathy passed away on Wednesday June 19, 2024, at Holiday Resort in Emporia. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Linda and Don Dix, and sister Sharon and Doug Morrisey and sister-in-law Susan Biehler. Lowell Robert Johannes, 81, Hays, died Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at HaysMed&nbsp;after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born April 16, 1943 in Salina, the son of Francis Lawrence and Agnes (Breer) Johannes. &nbsp;Lowell was the youngest of five boys&nbsp;by 13 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;He graduated from Salina High School in 1961 and earned a Master’s Degree in Industrial Arts from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;&nbsp;While attending Fort Hays State he met the love of his life, Janet Faye&nbsp;Gregg. &nbsp;Lowell and Janet were united in marriage on&nbsp;August 20, 1966, and their&nbsp;prayers were answered when they were blessed with two sons,&nbsp;Jason&nbsp;and Travis. &nbsp;

Lowell&nbsp;taught&nbsp;at several schools&nbsp;throughout Kansas&nbsp;and&nbsp;shared his passion for&nbsp;math and woodworking with others. &nbsp;He&nbsp;loved to fish, create wood projects for&nbsp;his&nbsp;family,&nbsp;and supervise renovations done by his son Travis. &nbsp;His other hobbies included&nbsp;going to garage sales with his brother-in-law Eldon Gregg, collecting clocks, and&nbsp;working&nbsp;on old cars.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lowell’s&nbsp;greatest joy was his family, a sentiment he was sure to let everyone know. &nbsp;His family will miss him dearly, but will find comfort in all the memories Lowell&nbsp;made&nbsp;sure to make with them.

Survivors include his wife Janet of Hays, two sons, Jason Johannes and wife Sarah and Travis Johannes and wife Katelyn, all of Hays, a&nbsp;brother-in-law, Eldon Gregg of Hays, a&nbsp;sister-in-law,&nbsp;Jeannie Johannes of Salina, four grandchildren, Eryn Mazour and husband Darrick, Kelsey,&nbsp;Evelyn,&nbsp;and Lydia Johannes, two step-grandchildren, Maleena and Janell Carlyle, two great grandchildren, Bailey Mazour and Silas Johannes,&nbsp;twin&nbsp;great grandsons, Wesley and Wyatt Mazour,&nbsp;due any day,&nbsp;and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Gerald, Gene, Ron, and Vern Johannes, and two sisters-in-law, Carol&nbsp;Gregg&nbsp;and Glori Ann Johannes.

Noel M. Stephenson, 92, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, June 18th, 2024.

Noel was born in Salina, Kansas on June 11, 1932, a son of Velma L. (Cripe) and Louis F. Stephenson.

He graduated from Salina High School and worked at Graves Truck Line, Payless Cashways, and other trucking companies.

Noel is survived by his wife of 69 years, Billie Jo Stephenson; son, Craig Stephenson (Marcia), of Gypsum, Kansas; daughter, Cathy Kelsey (Calvin), of Assaria, Kansas; 6 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Chris Stephenson; and brother, Neil Stephenson.

Noel’s wishes were to be cremated and no services are planned.

Joyce was born September 19, 1940 at Brookville to Melvin and Ava G. Himmelwright. Joyce was a Human Resource Director at Salina Regional Health Center (Asbury) and HR at Exide Battery (Stryten Energy). She worked in many medical offices in Salina. Joyce loved playing fast pitch softball, loved yard work and anything outside. She was a fabulous mom and grand mom. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Edwin, Quinton, Marlin; and spouse, Robert M. Dickerson. Joyce is survived by son, Kent of Mobile, AL; daughter, Pam (Mark) Breese of Lindsborg; sister, Elvera Riggs of Ft.
