Arlena Mae (Gutscher) Michael, born on September 25, 1938, in Burr Oak, Kansas, to Claud and Alberta Gutscher, passed away on September 13, 2024, at Village Manor in Abilene, Kansas. She was 85 years old.

Arlena grew up in Burr Oak with her siblings, Zelma Jensen of Gower, Missouri, and Lennie Gutscher of Burr Oak, Kansas. She attended Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, where she met David E. Michael. The two were married on August 17, 1958, at Sam's Chapel at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas.

Arlena was a devoted stay-at-home mother upon welcoming their daughter Micky in 1960. A few years later, Arlena became employed as a secretary for the Salina Civil Defense Emergency Preparedness Department and an active member of The Women of the Moose, roles she took great pride in until she and David relocated to Kansas City, Missouri. In 1982, she began a long and meaningful career with the American Red Cross in Disaster Services, where she made a lasting impact for 19 years before her retirement in 2001.

After many years away, Arlena and David returned to Salina in 2016. In her retirement, Arlena continued to embrace her passions. She was an avid auction-goer, enjoyed collecting glassware, and had a deep love for gardening. A talented pianist, Arlena also contributed her sewing skills to the Ararat Needle Guild, creating beautiful clothing for children at Shriners Children's Texas.

Arlena is survived by her sister, Zelma Jensen of Gower, Missouri; her brother, Lennie Gutscher of Burr Oak, Kansas; her daughter, Micky Menard, and her son-in-law, Jim Menard, of Abilene, Kansas. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren: CJ Jester (Alisha) of Salina, Kansas; Kimberly Linn (Cody) of Salina, Kansas; Pat Hubnik (Amy) of Salina, Kansas; Kelli Kohman of Abilene, Kansas; and Cristi Menard of Woodstock, Illinois. She was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren.

Arlena will be remembered for her kind heart, her many talents, and her dedication to family and community. She touched the lives of many and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Visitation for friends and family of Arlena will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 21st, 2024, at Ryan Mortuary 137 N 8th St, Salina, KS. Burial will be at a later date in Winona KS.

Helen Maxine (Barnett) Skaggs&nbsp;of Salina passed away September 13, 2024, just 5 days shy of her 105th birthday. Maxine was born September 18,1919 in Topeka, Kansas to Charlotte and Ralph Barnett.

Maxine graduated from Concordia High School in 1937, attended Brown Mackie Business School in Salina and began working for Metropolitan Life Insurance company.

In 1930 She and Leland Skaggs began dating. They married in 1942, just prior to Leland’s overseas deployment which lasted for 3 ½ years.

By 1949 Leland had completed Optometry school in Chicago and they bought a small practice in Philipsburg, Kansas where they lived until 2003.

Three children were born, Lee Ann (1946a0, Susan Jane (1952) and Richard Max (1962). During the years in Phillipsburg Maxine was active in the methodist church, she was a 4-H Club leader and was a behind the scenes business partner during Leland’s prolonged hospitalizations and recovery from tuberculosis, keeping both the household running and the business open by employing temporary Optometric graduates.

In 2003 Maxine and Leland relocated to Riverside Plaza in Salina KS. Maxine relocated to the caring facility of Eaglecrest in 2021, enjoying many new friendships in these later years.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers and by Leland in 2006.

She is survived by children Lee Romaniszyn (William Counter), Susan Skaggs and Richard Skaggs (Jean Lynch): grandchildren mike Roth (Jacquelyn), Luarie Graff, Kelly Graff and Camille Knoles; Great grandchildren Matthew Roth and Jake Roth

Helen Maxine (Barnett) Skaggs, 104

Joyce L. Brown, 94, of Salina, KS, went to her eternal rest September 11, 2024.&nbsp; She was born in 1930 in Quinter, KS to Len and Stella Harden. She spent summers in her teenage years performing domestic work, and occasionally mixing mortar for her father, an accomplished mason. She graduated from Culver High School and went on to college at McPherson College and Kansas State University where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics. From 1952 to 1953, she taught Home Economics and Sciences at Westmoreland High School in Westmoreland, KS.

Joyce married Dick Brown in 1951, her loving and devoted husband of 73 years. In 1955 and 1956 she was able to accompany Dick to San Antonio while he served two years in the USAF. Joyce was a loving and nurturing mother to four children. Outside the home, she wore many hats as secretary, accountant, and hostess at the family business, the Elmore Dairy and Cafeteria, for 25 years. Her greatest joys were her family, cooking, sewing, swimming, biking, skiing, camping, driving her bright red Mazda Miata, and a good glass of wine. She even got a private pilot license and flew her own plane.

Joyce was a compassionate woman toward everyone she encountered and always full of grace, regardless of the task at hand.&nbsp; Her respect and warmth were deeply felt by so many.&nbsp; Joyce will always be known for her radiant, welcoming smile, which she leaves as a legacy to all who knew her.

Joyce was a member of the Salina First United Methodist Church, serving on the Administrative Council, as a Trustee, and on various Boards. She was a Sunday School Teacher and long-time member of the Sewing Concerns group.

Joyce was active in many community and civic organizations.&nbsp; She participated in 4H as a Project Leader in cooking and sewing, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels for over 30 years.&nbsp; She was a Board Member of the Salina United Way, a 50-year member and Past President of the Salina Downtown Lioness Club, and Past President and member of PEO. She was also active in the Parent Teacher Association, as Past President at South Park School, and a member at Huesner and Franklin Schools.

She is survived by her sister, Kathy Chapman; her husband, Dick Brown; her four children, Kim Brown (Conee), Sandy Hill, Susan Mowery, and Allan Brown; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday September 20, 2024 at Ryan Mortuary.&nbsp; A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday September 21st at the First United Methodist Church.&nbsp; Inurnment will be at Roselawn Cemetery.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Joyce L. Brown

Lawrence H. Korbel, 97, of Salina, KS passed away Thursday, September 12th, 2024. He was born on January 24, 1927, in Caldwell, Kansas to Anna Albert and Henry Korbel. He married Nellie L. (Seifert) Korbel on April 1, 1949, in Hutchinson, Kansas. Throughout the years, Lawrence was employed at the Coleman company in Wichita, then retired from Beech Aircraft after 33 years as a Wing Manufacturer. After retirement Lawrence passion of hunting, fishing, camping, and refurbishing bicycles were fulfilled even more.

He is survived by his daughter Lori Loe; grandson, Blake Loe of Salina, KS; great grandson, Atlas Loe of Olathe KS.

He is preceded in death by his sons Ronald G. Korbel and Gregory L. Korbel; and his wife Nellie L. (Seifert) Korbel.

Funeral Services will be at Ryan Mortuary at 1:00 pm Wednesday, September 18. The burial will be at Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

Lawrence H. Korbel

Anne Elizabeth (Barker) Hall, 42, of Lawrence, died Monday, September 9, 2024. Anne was born August 29, 1982, to Steven and Pamela (Prochaska) Barker in Salina.

She spent her childhood in Minneapolis and graduated from Minneapolis High School in 2001. Anne attended the University of Kansas and received a B.A. in political science and women’s studies in 2005 and a juris doctorate with certification in elder law in 2008. She was a member of the KU Women’s Chorale and Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Anne was united in marriage to Adam Hall on June 2, 2007, and to this union twin sons were born.

Anne practiced law for ten years, first as an associate of Pendleton &amp; Sutton and later for the Kansas Board of Healing Arts. She was a member, officer and former president of the Douglas County Bar Association. She was a graduate of Leadership Lawrence in 2011 and honored as an outstanding volunteer nominee in 2011 for her work in CASA (court appointed special advocate).

She was preceded in death by her father Steven Barker and nephew Miles Hosler.

Anne is survived by her husband Adam, sons Aaron and Michael of the home; mother Pamela Barker, Minneapolis; sisters Jennifer (Nick) Hosler, Lawrence; Patricia (Dustin) Little, Minneapolis; nephews Preston Hosler, Steven Little, Gavin, Henry and Luke Brownfield and nieces Lauren Hosler, Rose Little and Abigail Wiesing.

A memorial service and celebration of Anne’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, September 20 at the First Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis. Dorothy Ellen Spellman, 92, Salina, died Tuesday, September 10, 2024. She was born July 21, 1932, near Hedville, Kansas to Crawford and Margaret (Kern) McDaniel. Dorothy was a graduate of Bavaria High School in May of 1950 and two months later, married Alvin G. Spellman of Kipp, Kansas.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Dorothy was an active member in this Churches Boy Scout program as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts. For many years, she was a piano teacher. She was passionate about her music and eventually was an organist at some of the churches here in Salina. She had many different jobs: She was a clerical worker at the Salina County Clerk Office, the office manager at the American Automobile Association (AAA). For a short time, helped with the Major Mission Fund of Northern Kansas. And, eventually, as a file clerk with the Mowery Clinic.

For over two decades, along with Alvin, she volunteered to call Bingo at McCall Manor. Over the years, she enjoyed crafts, cake decorating for birthdays and weddings, baking, and was an excellent seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alvin, brother George McDaniel, sister Sarah Holmes, sister Mary Etta Rowson and son Leslie E. Spellman. Surviving is her son Lyle Spellman and wife Kathleen of Wichita. Leslie’s wife Elaine Spellman. Grandson Eugene Spellman (Hoa) of Haysville. Granddaughter Megan Kraus (Jeremy) of Topeka. Great grandchildren, Angela, Tristan, Brigham and Reagan.

Dorothy Ellen Spellman

Jack Dewayne Vogt went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 7, 2024. He passed away at home, with his two loving daughters, Debra and Christina Vogt, at his side. He was 89 years old.

Jack was born in Hillsboro, KS on June 5, 1935 to Arnold and Edna Vogt. He grew up helping out at his father’s grocery store and nursery business. He attended Hillsboro High School where he lettered in varsity basketball. He married his high school sweetheart, Martha Lee “Pat” Nelson in Durham, KS on Oct. 14, 1952. Together they raised their two daughters, Debra and Chris, while also starting a produce trucking business from their home in Marion, KS.

Jack and Pat moved their family to Nebraska and later Michigan for career opportunities. Most notably, Jack worked for the Michigan Apple Committee after settling in Grand Rapids, MI where he and Pat bought a house and enjoyed many years together. His work afforded them numerous opportunities to travel. Jack and Pat loved to travel together for work and for fun throughout their marriage.

After retiring early due to his health, he and his family returned home to Kansas where he bought a house in Tampa, KS, and had the opportunity to help raise his grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Vogt. He purchased a small plot of land adjacent to the house and established a small farm, raising horses, gardening, and welcoming all stray dogs and cats that seemed to flock to his door for shelter. Jack loved all living things great and small and had a special fondness for lost animals. He enjoyed the great outdoors and loved plants and trees which stemmed from his youth working at his father’s nursery and later in his career in produce.

Jack was a hard worker, a devoted family man, and a devout Christian. He was an Edler in the Presbyterian Church. He had a kind servant’s heart and would always help others before himself. He enjoyed working on cars and always loved when a car show came to town.

Sadly, in 2010 his lifelong love and partner, Pat, passed away at the age of 74 due to failing health. Her passing affected him greatly and he missed her to his dying day. However, he remained steadfast in the following years&nbsp;committed to supporting his family and regaling his daughters with many great stories of his trucking days on the roads of Kansas, Colorado,&nbsp;Nebraska, Texas, Missouri, and Michigan.&nbsp; &nbsp;He had a terrific sense of humor, a quick wit, and was a wonderful storyteller. He was positive, good-natured, upbeat, friendly, always genial, and considerate. He was the best of company and a joy to be around. He looked for the good in life, and his family found it in him.

He is survived by his Brother, Gary (and Delight) Vogt, Sister, Lynda Vogt (and Guy) Sharwood Daughters, Debra and Christina Vogt, and Grandsons, Matthew and Michael (and Melissa) Vogt and Great Grandchildren Connor Thompson, Cadence, and Keldon Vogt and a small but mighty group of prayer warrior friends.

We know he is thrilled to be in Heaven and to rejoin his beloved Pat. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was 89 years old.Jack was born in Hillsboro, KS on June 5, 1935 to Arnold and Edna Vogt. He grew up helping out at his father’s grocery store and nursery business. He attended Hillsboro High School where he lettered in varsity basketball. He married his high school sweetheart, Martha Lee “Pat” Nelson in Durham, KS on Oct. 14, 1952. Together they raised their two daughters, Debra and Chris, while also starting a produce trucking business from their home in Marion, KS.Jack and Pat moved their family to Nebraska and later Michigan for career opportunities. Most notably, Jack worked for the Michigan Apple Committee after settling in Grand Rapids, MI where he and Pat bought a house and enjoyed many years together. His work afforded them numerous opportunities to travel. Jack and Pat loved to travel together for work and for fun throughout their marriage.After retiring early due to his health, he and his family returned home to Kansas where he bought a house in Tampa, KS, and had the opportunity to help raise his grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Vogt. He purchased a small plot of land adjacent to the house and established a small farm, raising horses, gardening, and welcoming all stray dogs and cats that seemed to flock to his door for shelter. Sister Mary Ann Flax died September 10, 2024, at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, KS. She was 86 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 70 years. She was born in Ransom, KS on October 17, 1937 to Godfrey and Catherine Weber Flax, the eighth of 9 children, and was baptized Mary Ann. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, Kansas on September 8, 1953. On March 19, 1954, Mary Ann received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Corona Marie, later returning to her baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1955 and final vows on March 19, 1958.

Sister Mary Ann received a BA from Marymount College in Latin in 1966 and the MA in religious education in 1973. She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Salina, Aurora, KS and Silver City, NM. Following her teaching career, she served as religious educator in Hoxie, Seguin, Grainfield and Grinnell, KS. She served as coordinator of evangelization and catechesis in Northwestern Colorado from 1970 to 2003. After leaving Colorado she served in Lexington, NE until her retirement in 2023.

Sister Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings. A Bible Vigil Service will be held September 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Marilyn Wall as the eulogist. Richard Clay Tilton, 99, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones.&nbsp;Born on April 18, 1925, in Lincoln, Kansas, Richard was a devout Christian, deeply committed to his faith throughout his life. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, known for his kind heart, generosity, and unwavering dedication to God.

In 1942, Richard proudly joined the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper during World War II, where he earned the Victory Medal for his service. On May 28, 1950, Richard married Hazel Mae (Soeken), and they shared 74 years of marriage. He is survived by Hazel, who resides in Salina, Kansas. Together, they raised two children: Mike Tilton (wife Linda) of Monument, New Mexico, and Pamela (Tilton) Hertel (husband Marvin) of Ensign, Kansas. They were blessed with three grandchildren—Christa Hansen (Brad), Brigette Henry (Troy), and Ryan VanderGiesen (Ryan Craig)—as well as five great-grandchildren: Paige, Trevor, Danielle, Zane, and Brandon.

After being honorably discharged from the war, Richard and Hazel owned and operated Tilton’s Tasty Treats in Downs, Kansas, for over a decade. In addition to running the business, Richard had a successful career as a diesel mechanic with John Deere. The couple eventually moved to Dodge City, Kansas, where Richard became a welding and mechanics instructor at Dodge City Community College. Beyond his professional achievements, Richard was well-known for his woodworking skills. In retirement, he was an avid golfer and he enjoyed spending time outdoors, working in the yard, and in the garden.

Marilynn J Bielefeld, 84, resident of Chapman, Kansas, 1970-2019, died September 8, 2024, at Valley View Senior LIfe, Junction City, Kansas.

Born May 20, 1940, in Abilene, Kansas, to Harley and Alice (Shirk) Sexton, was raised in and attended K-12 in Junction City. She worked for Fegan Telephone in Junction City from 1957-1965. On Jun 7, 1959, Marilynn was united in marriage to Donald L Bielefeld at the First Christian Church in Junction City, where she has been a member since being baptized in the early 1950’s. After moving to Chapman in 1970, Marilynn enjoyed maintaining the home and raising her two sons with Don. The family created lots of memories camping and boating at Milford Lake nearly every summer weekend, as well as gardening and putting up the bounty of produce. In later years, she and Don had season tickets and enjoyed cheering for KSU Women’s Basketball. Marilynn along with Don were active members of NARFE, Old Trooper, Junction City, Chapter No 0383. Marilynn always enjoyed a friendly card game and playing Scrabble. In 2019, Don and Marilynn moved to Junction City, where they made new friends and transitioned to a slower pace. Survivors include husband, Don, Junction City; son, Doug (Michele) Bielefeld, Pomona, KS; son, Todd (Scott Pittman) Bielefeld, Wichita; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and four nieces.

Marilynn was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Verleen Byrn.

Steven W. “Steve” Rippert was born December 6, 1950 in Havre de Grace, Maryland the son of William B. and Mabel (Rawlings) Rippert. Following high school Steve attended K-State &amp; KU Universities.

On February 1, 1982 Steve was united in marriage to Mary Frances Link in Abilene and were blessed with two children.

Steve was the Maintenance Director for the Geary County Community Hospital in Junction City for more than 39 years.

Steve enjoyed bowling, golfing, cooking, and reading, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary Frances of the home, daughter Anna Ingles and her husband Michael of Ashland, Missouri, son Joseph and his wife Heide of Junction City, Kansas, brother William Rippert of Shalimar, Florida, sister Mary Bessey and her husband Bruce of Derby, Kansas, and four grandchildren Nya, Inarie, Isabel, and Madisyn. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Kenneth.

Funeral services for Steve will be 10:00 am Friday, September 13, 2024 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Abilene. His final resting place will be in the Highland Cemetery in Junction City. The family will receive friends from 9:00 am – service time Friday at the church. Maurice Dean "Mo" Kerr, aged 76, passed away on September 2, 2024, in Salina, Kansas. Born on November 6, 1947, in Abilene, Kansas, he led a life marked by dedication to his community and family.

Mo graduated from Abilene High School before pursuing higher education at Washburn University and Wichita State University. His career spanned several decades, beginning with his time at a pizza place in Topeka during college. He later utilized his skills as an Electrical Engineer in various companies in Salina and eventually founded his own business, Computer Helper, assisting many with their computer needs.

A proud veteran, Mo served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973, contributing diligently to his country's efforts during a pivotal time.

He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Betty Kerr, sharing over 55 years of marriage filled with trips, dinners, and cherished moments until her passing. Mo was also a dedicated member of the Sunrise Presbyterian Church, where he volunteered on various committees.

His community involvement extended to volunteering at the local Senior Center, teaching computer skills and offering his expertise to help others embrace technology.

Mo enjoyed gardening, solving puzzles, and exploring the latest in computer technology, hobbies that reflected his curious and engaging spirit.

He is survived by daughters Marci McCullough and Mindy Johnson, son-in-law John Johnson, grandsons Allen and Cameron Johnson, along with numerous unofficially adopted daughters, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. His family and friends, too numerous to name, will deeply miss his presence. Mo was preceded in death by his wife Betty Kerr, father Melvin Kerr, father-in-law Floyd James Logan, mother-in-law Margaret Logan, niece Emily Kerr, and son-in-law Terry McCullough.

A service to honor Mo's life will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 10:30 am at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, located at 825 E. Beloit Ave. in Salina, KS 67401. Contributions in memory of Maurice can be made to the Sunrise Presbyterian Church or the Salina Alzheimer's Support Group.

Shirley Simmelink, 92, passed away on September 1, 2024, in Beloit, Kansas, at the Resident Care Center, where she had lived for the past 10 and a half years and received wonderful care from many loving staff members. Shirley was born near Jewell, Kansas, to Vic and Mary Tullar on June 24, 1932. She attended Star Hill, a one-room schoolhouse, for the early years of her education. Shirley graduated from Jewell High School with the Class of 1950.

On November 11, 1951, Shirley married Don Simmelink. They briefly lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where Shirley worked at a dry cleaners. They later returned to Ionia, Kansas, to begin farming. In 1958, they moved to Jewell to continue their farming life.

Shirley was known for her kindness, hospitality, and love of family, along with her talent for good home cooking. She had a special fondness for children and found great joy in their company. Later in life, she cherished taking buggy rides with Don by her side. Shirley enjoyed being an active part of the community. She was often seen along the parade route during the Jewell Corn Show, attending Christmas pageants, and volunteering as a driver for Meals on Wheels. A devoted member of the Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, Shirley's deep love for Jesus was evident to all who knew her.

Shirley is survived by three children: Donna (Charlie) Reed of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Dale Simmelink of Ionia, Kansas; and Dee (Curtis) Shamburg of Portis, Kansas; her two sisters: Myrth McDonald of Victoria, Texas, and Marilyn Griest of the Resident Care Center in Beloit, Kansas; as well as 15 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Vic and Mary Tullar; her husband, Don Simmelink; brother Vaughn Tullar; grandson Joshua Simmelink; and great-grandson Max Potter.

Funeral Services were Wednesday September 4, 2024 at the Jewell Community Center, Jewell, KS at 2:00pm. The burial will follow at Jewell City Cemetery, Jewell, KS.

 </figure>Shirley Simmelink, 92, passed away on September 1, 2024, in Beloit, Kansas, at the Resident Care Center, where she had lived for the past 10 and a half years and received wonderful care from many loving staff members. Shirley was born near Jewell, Kansas, to Vic and Mary Tullar on June 24, 1932. She attended Star Hill, a one-room schoolhouse, for the early years of her education. Shirley graduated from Jewell High School with the Class of 1950.On November 11, 1951, Shirley married Don Simmelink. They briefly lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where Shirley worked at a dry cleaners. They later returned to Ionia, Kansas, to begin farming. In 1958, they moved to Jewell to continue their farming life.Shirley was known for her kindness, hospitality, and love of family, along with her talent for good home cooking. She had a special fondness for children and found great joy in their company. Later in life, she cherished taking buggy rides with Don by her side. Shirley enjoyed being an active part of the community. She was often seen along the parade route during the Jewell Corn Show, attending Christmas pageants, and volunteering as a driver for Meals on Wheels. A devoted member of the Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, Shirley's deep love for Jesus was evident to all who knew her.Shirley is survived by three children: Donna (Charlie) Reed of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Dale Simmelink of Ionia, Kansas; and Dee (Curtis) Shamburg of Portis, Kansas; her two sisters: Myrth McDonald of Victoria, Texas, and Marilyn Griest of the Resident Care Center in Beloit, Kansas; as well as 15 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.She is preceded in death by her parents, Vic and Mary Tullar; her husband, Don Simmelink; brother Vaughn Tullar; grandson Joshua Simmelink; and great-grandson Max Potter.Funeral Services were Wednesday September 4, 2024 at the Jewell Community Center, Jewell, KS at 2:00pm. Shirley Simmelink

Marvin L. Alderson, 76, Delphos, died Friday, September 6, 2024, at his home. Marvin was born July 24, 1948, in Concordia to Marvin P. “Bub” and Frances M. “Chub” (Pounds) Alderson.

Marvin was a 1966 graduate of Delphos High School. He and Virginia Higle were married on May 19, 1972. Marvin worked several jobs throughout his lifetime; the most recent was being the City Superintendent of Delphos for 17 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mindi Carlson; and brother, Arnold Alderson.

Survivors are his wife of 52 years, Virginia; children, J.P. Alderson (Michelle), Lacy Alderson (Greg), Melody Ringer (Dustin), and Stephanie Furrow (Beau); sister-in-law, Dixie Alderson; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 11 at Wilson Family Funeral Home, 405 Argyle Ave., Minneapolis, KS 67467. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, September 12 at the Delphos Auditorium. Burial will be in the Delphos Cemetery. Phyllis J. Anderson 84, Minneapolis, died August 29, 2024, in Minneapolis. Phyllis was born October 13, 1939, in Manhattan, KS, to Glen and Dorothy (Campbell) Anderson.

She was a 1957 graduate of Glasco High School. Phyllis and Charles “Bud” H. Klein were united in marriage and to that union, three sons were born.&nbsp;

Phyllis was a lifelong learner. Some of her education included attending Southwestern College where she received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in 1989. She received a Master of Science degree in community counseling from the University of Nebraska in 1998. She worked in the substance abuse and mental health counseling field for 25 years. Phyllis also worked in secretarial and bookkeeping jobs over the years and especially enjoyed working part-time at H&amp;R Block preparing taxes.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepfather, Robert Beck.

Survivors are her sons, Ron Klein of Geneseo, James and Diana Klein of Delphos, and Joe and Julie Klein of Abilene; daughter, Sandy and Roger Valeri of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; brothers, Vernon and Peggy Anderson of Oroville, CA and Dean and Joyce Beck of Glenwood, MN; sister, Barbara and Homer Davidson of Smithville, MO; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the Glasco Cemetery. A Celebration of Life and meal will follow at the Glasco V.F.W. Phyllis J. Anderson 

Donna Mae (Hinrichs) Richardson was born on April 10, 1935, to George and Marie (Hesse) Hinrichs and passed from this earth on September 5, 2024, at the age of 89. 

Donna went to school in Deshler, Nebraska, and graduated from Deshler High School on May 23, 1952. Donna attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, for one year majoring in business. After college, Donna was a medical secretary for Dr. Penry in Hebron, Nebraska. She was united in marriage to Donald (Don) Richardson on March 26, 1967. From this marriage was born a son, Greg. The couple moved to the Belleville, Kansas, area and became grocery store co-owners for the “Richardson’s Jack and Jill” in Belleville. Donna also worked as an admissions clerk for the Republic County Hospital. After several years of serving the community, they retired from the grocery business. Donna continued to work as a receptionist for a lawyer, Bill Navis.&nbsp;

Donna took classes throughout her working years to maintain her excellent bookkeeping skills. Some of Donna’s friends commented on her business ventures with her sister, Marla (Hinrichs) Gerberding as a dress store manager in Hebron, Nebraska, before either of the ladies were married. Donna enjoyed working alongside family and friends. Once she was able to retire, Donna became an avid quilter and joined a quilting group in Belleville. She loved to play golf with the Couples’ and Women's League at the Belleville Country Club. She was a member of the Lutheran Church and Touchstones. Her favorite hobby was reading and traveling with her quilting friends during shop hops. Her memories are stitched into numerous quilts that she made for her granddaughters, Katelyn and Allison, and other relatives/friends.

Donna is survived by her son, Greg Richardson and wife Lisa of Chester, NE; granddaughters, Katelyn and Allison Richardson, Chester, NE; sister, Marla Gerberding of Deshler, NE; nieces, Gina Hudson (Bill) of Belvidere, NE, and Shana Gerberding of Deshler, NE. Stepson, Steve Richardson of LaCrosse, KS; stepdaughter, Denise Morrison (Steve) of Hoisington, KS, and step grandchildren Casey Morrison, Carla Schartz, Abby Jonas, and Stephanie Koochel.

Donna is preceded in death by her husband, Don; parents, George and Marie (Hesse) Hinrichs; father and mother-in-law, Harley and Dorothy Richardson; brothers-in-law, Gene Richardson, Gary Richardson, Roger Baldwin, Gary Friend and Russ Gerberding; sister-in-law Sondra Richardson.

Following Donna’s wishes, she was cremated. Donna's last request was to be with Don who passed away a few months before her on January 15, 2024.

Robert O. Marlin, III, 93, of Lindsborg passed away August 24, 2024 at Bethany Home in Lindsborg. Robert was born December 21, 1930 in Naylor, MO to the late Robert Marlin Jr. And Bonnie (Cunningham) Marlin.

Robert was a high school graduate and a veteran of the United States Navy. He worked as a sailing instructor, a ship captain, a sailor, and a barber.

Robert is survived by his son: Robert Marlin, IV (Sheri) of Buhler, KS; granddaughter: Grace Marlin (David Lopez); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; son: Tracy Dean Marlin; sisters: Roberta Anspach and Ardys Pyles; and brother: John Marlin.

Farmers all around the country are in harvest mode. Harvesting our dryland corn was quick and smooth. Moving to the first field of sorghum, which was beautiful and looked ready to go, but the moisture tested too high by a few percentage points. The wait was frustrating. The days drug on with a sprinkle of rain one day and others that weren’t hot or windy enough to dry the crop. Going back and forth in a combine can feel like time is dragging on, but cutting a load or two and then having to stop and try tomorrow day after day can feel excruciatingly slow.

Fall harvest often feels like a marathon lasting for months in comparison to the dozen or so days we spend sprinting through wheat harvest. In the fall, most farmers are harvesting several crops. Some crops are planted early and others are double cropped behind a winter crop. Dryland and irrigated versions of the same crops vary in yield potential meaning different genetics, length of growing time and inputs. Shorter days and lower temperatures can cause crops to take longer to dry down. Some crops are better at waiting to be harvested than others. Switching equipment and coordinating help for all the different crops can be a logistical nightmare.

However, farmers are not always completely rational about the timing of field work. You really don’t see a lot of “keeping up with the Joneses” in equipment purchases and other materialistic items. Farmers might get an idea or inspiration from a neighbor but most are practical, independent thinkers landing along the spectrum of brand loyalists to value seeker and always having the newest equipment to getting all of the good possible out of a piece of equipment.

Farmers are not completely immune to needing to match what the neighbors are doing. Seeing a neighbor moving equipment to a field to plant sets off a mental sense of urgency to “keep up” with the actions of the neighborhood. One farmer can set off a domino effect that has every farmer in the area testing moisture and calling in harvest help. They don’t want to get left behind, which is funny because the decision of when to harvest or plant is actually fairly important. Without the right soil temperature, forecast and moisture a crop can fail to get established, and without the weather conditions and moisture levels you often sacrifice earning potential or even risk an elevator rejecting your crop.

There is great frustration in knowing you have a big job to do, getting all your preparations done and then not being able to do the work — yet.  Getting the timing right is a lot of hurrying up to wait. Hurry up and wait is an accurate oxymoron capturing the feeling of struggle when we temper our desire to move forward with knowledge that conditions aren’t quite right for you to succeed.

Harvest is a time when patience is needed in abundance. Farmers don’t mind long days, exposure to the elements and repetitive tasks. The real test of skill is shown through the ability to wait for the right moment to take action.

That’s the virtue — learning to wait, to find the right timing. In a world driven by productivity and instant gratification, patience is difficult but incredibly valuable. The next time you find yourself in a hurry up and wait moment, lean into the discomfort and take a moment to appreciate the pain and patience required for getting it right.

Leland Eugene “Gene” Rothenberger, Christ’s loyal servant, 96, passed away from this world to salvation in Jesus on September 6, 2024. He was born on July 21, 1928, in Osborne, Kansas, to Irvin and Katherine (Humes) Rothenberger. Gene married Grace Eileen Kreft of Natoma, Kansas, on November 20, 1949.&nbsp;&nbsp;

God blessed Gene “The Hydraulic Man” with the knowledge to be an engineer, becoming a highly respected heavy equipment operator and service manager. He was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church.&nbsp;

Gene is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years; two daughters, Marcia Mitchell and Marla Atteberry; grandson, Kyle Kempton; great grandson; his parents; brother, Gerald Rothenberger; two sisters, Barbara Jo Rothenberger and Jeanette Henry.&nbsp;

Survivors include son, Steve Rothenberger (Deb) of Salina; three daughters, Joyce Kuntzsch (Jim) of Dorrance, Danna Allison (Jeff) of Great Bend, Kerry E. He was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church.&nbsp;Gene is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years; two daughters, Marcia Mitchell and Marla Atteberry; grandson, Kyle Kempton; great grandson; his parents; brother, Gerald Rothenberger; two sisters, Barbara Jo Rothenberger and Jeanette Henry.&nbsp;Survivors include son, Steve Rothenberger (Deb) of Salina; three daughters, Joyce Kuntzsch (Jim) of Dorrance, Danna Allison (Jeff) of Great Bend, Kerry E. Rothenberger (Becky Turley) of South Hutchinson; ten grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; brother, Roland “Uncle Red” Rothenberger of Minnesota; and companion and best friend, Lucille Blide of St. John.&nbsp;Visitation will take place from noon to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2024, with family receiving guests from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Leland Eugene “Gene” Rothenberger

Donald M. Hughes, passed away on September 4, 2024 at the age of 95. He was born on August 9, 1929 to Keith and Buelah (Smith) Hughes on a farm in Saline County. He has lived in Salina or Saline County all his life. Don served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea for the majority of his service. He married his wife, Mae Weis, on May 24, 1959. Don became a barber, practicing for several years before becoming a full-time farmer.

Over the years, he had many hobbies such as learning to ski at the age of 50, a lifetime of hunting, traveling, building a one room cabin, giving horse and buggy rides and was even an extra in a movie utilizing his horse and buggy. At an early age, he followed in the footsteps of his dad and taught himself to play guitar. Don was honored to have given his grandsons’ their first traditional haircuts. He also enjoyed trips to the casinos and the day before he became ill, had traveled to the casino in Wichita.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and his sisters. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mae; his children: daughter, Barb Powell (Chuck) of Salina; sons, Clint Hughes (Donella) of Salina, and Tom Hughes (Mike) of Tulsa; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has been chosen. An informal gathering of family and friends will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Bring your lawn chair, your favorite beverage of choice, and your favorite memories of your time with Don.

Donald M. Hughes

Harold Eugene Sutton, 91, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital of Lincoln, NE, from pneumonia complicated by COPD. In progressive hospital care for 11 days prior to his death, Harold died peacefully with family by his side.

He leaves his wife of 69 years, Jean; daughter Kim Sutton of Swansea, SC; son Kent (Diana) of Peru, NE; and 3 brothers Donald (Shirley) of Chanute, KS, Bill (Loretta) of Durham, KS and Dwayne (Barbara) of Alba, TX. He leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Ellen Sutton; brother Dwight Sutton; grandson Jonathan Sutton and great grandson Forrest Sutton.

Harold was born in Gypsum, Kansas, April 13, 1933, where he grew up second oldest of 5 sibling brothers. He learned to hunt and fish with their father Sam, and Harold was an excellent shot. In his older years he enjoyed competing in High School baseball and basketball. After graduating from Gypsum High School in 1951, he worked a short time at Union Pacific Railroad as a train locomotive fireman in Salina, Kansas. In 1955 he married his high school sweetheart, Jean Ellis, and they moved to various locations in north central Kansas to work in local hardware stores and lumberyards.

In 1963 Harold showed interest in becoming a machinist at Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas, where he trained to be a spar mill operator fabricating wing frame structures with aluminum. He achieved machinist certification within a 6 month period while working at Boeing. During his time as a machinist, he was recognized for achieving production goals with minimum scrap products, commendation for various machine improvements, and years of work with no personal safety accidents. In 1995, when he retired after 32 years of service, the Boeing Company also retired the specialized spar mills he operated, as he was the last machinist trained to operate them.

He learned carpentry skills from his youth and he used those skills to remodel and maintain the homes he owned and lived in. His wood shop included a mortise jig for tenon joints used to fabricate custom solid walnut door frames for home furniture projects. Many pieces of his custom made furniture are still in use today in the extended Sutton family. One such piece of furniture is a corner gun cabinet that is designed for displaying rifles, shotguns, and pistols and storing ammo.

In January 2019, after 29 years of retirement as resident of Kansas and then Texas, Harold moved to Nebraska to be close to his family. There he enjoyed frequent drop-in visits while in assisted living. He especially enjoyed holidays where he traveled to family homes for fellowship and food. It was during this time he was convicted to follow the Lord in baptism, and on 12/1 of 2019, at the age of 86, Harold was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ at Millard Community Church in Omaha, NE.

“Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

“For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection” Romans 6:4-5

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, September 13, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, with family present from 6-8. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, at First Baptist Church of Gypsum, with burial to follow at Gypsum Valley Cemetery.&nbsp;For more thoughts and memories of Harold, there will time for open sharing at the luncheon in the Fellowship Hall after the graveside interment.

Harold Eugene Sutton

David Chard, 76, of Salina, KS, passed away September 5, 2024, at Pinnacle Park Nursing and Rehab Center, after a short illness. David was born August 23, 1948, to Howard Chard and Dixie (Crooks) Chard Zachgo who both preceded him in death. David married Henrietta Weber on April 14, 1973.

Preceding him in death were his parents; step-father, Wilbert Zachgo; brother, Michael Squires of Lincoln KS; and sister, Susan Mattingly of Wichita, KS.

He is survived by his wife, Henrietta, of 51 years; his children, Becki Travis (Greg) of Minneapolis, KS, and Todd Chard of Salina; and his 4 grandsons, Zach Travis, Mathew Chard, Dominic Chard and Ryder Chard.

Other survivors include step-mother, Yvonne Chard of Salina; brothers, Linn of Salina, Tim (Donna) of Talmage, Nebraska, Richard of Wichita, and Patrick Squires (Dee Dee) of St Joseph, Missouri; and sisters, Karin Savage (Walter) of Ellsworth, KS, Karli Schultz (Arlen) of Bushton, KS, and Jo Henry (Jim) of Salina.

Daves motto was "Once a Marine, Always a Marine". He was very proud to serve as a lineman in the USMC in the Vietnam conflict. In 2022 Dave was able to fulfill his dream of going on the National Honor Flight to Washington DC.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, playing softball, riding his motorcycle, (known to his friends as Snake), and he was a wiz at word puzzles.

David was a member of the Legion Riders, of the Salina American Legion, a life member of the Lincoln KS VFW, and Saint Mary's Catholic Church.

A memorial funeral mass will be held at St Mary's Queen of the Universe Catholic Church located at 230 E Cloud, Salina KS. Service will begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 12.  Military services will be conducted after the mass at the church. Lunch will follow at the parish hall.

Interment at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery Fort Riley, Manhattan, KS, will take place at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the VFW/Legion Riders or Saint Mary's Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in care of Ryan Mortuary.

Delmar Dean Sherbert, 90, of Salina, KS, passed away on September 5, 2024. He was born on February 22, 1934, in Clay Center, KS, to Virgil and Bertha (Haden) Sherbert.

Delmar was a talented woodworker with a passion for crafting beautiful pieces and a skilled lamp repairman known for his meticulous work.

He cherished his family and enjoyed sharing his talents and love for life with those around him.

He is survived by his son, Gary Sherbert (Cheryl) of Gypsum, KS; daughter, Judy Carleton (Loren) of Marion, KS; brothers, Marvin Sherbert (Jane) of Clay Center, KS, and Kenny Sherbert (Nancy) of Topeka, KS; sister, Retha Burnett of Hallsville, MO; 9 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Cynthia (Mildfeldt) Sherbert, and his brother, Paul Sherbert.
