Shirley J. Free, the daughter of William Kasl and Anna (Cherney) Kasl was born December 2, 1938 in rural Wayne, KS and passed away on July 5, 2021 at the Jewell County Hospital-ISB, Mankato, KS at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 3 days.

Shirley grew up in rural Cuba, KS, graduating from Cuba High School.&nbsp; On April 22, 1960, she was united in marriage to Benny O. Free and to this union were born Cindy, Becky, and Curtis.&nbsp; The couple made their home in Formoso, KS.

Shirley was a bookkeeper for grain elevators and livestock companies in Republic and Jewell Counties.&nbsp; After her retirement, she worked part-time at the Central National Bank in Formoso.

Shirley was a member of the Formoso Community Church, Formoso, KS.&nbsp; She also was a 4-H project leader and was a member of the Formoso Community Pride Committee for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Benny O. Free in 2018;&nbsp; brother Don Kasl; and sister Wilma Janousek.

Shirley is survived by son Curtis (Jody) Free of Salina, KS;&nbsp; daughters&nbsp; Cindy (Nick) Kimes of Harrison, AR and Becky (Bob) Roush of Formoso, KS;&nbsp; four grandchildren,&nbsp; Annika Fee and Dane Free both of Salina, KS, Luke (Lauren) Roush of El Dorado, KS, and Samantha (Alan) Sramek of La Crosse, KS; five great-grandchildren, Westen, Levi, &amp; Sadie Roush, Brayden &amp; Emma Sramek; stepgrandchild Kara Tramell of Harrison, AR; two stepgreat-grandchildren,&nbsp;Erin and Becca Tramell; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the&nbsp;Formoso Community Church, Formoso, KS with Pastor Daniel Waide officiating.

Interment will follow at the Balch Cemetery, rural Formoso.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, KS with the family greeting friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p..m. on Friday.

Larry L. Welch, 80, of Jewell, Kansas, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the Mitchell County Hospital, Beloit, Kansas. He was born April 9, 1941, on a farm in Jewell County, Kansas to Daniel and Hope (Ozmun) Welch.

Larry was a 1959 graduate of Esbon High School.

He married Vyonda N. Frost in Tucson, Arizona on May 2, 1960.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on December 21, 2012.&nbsp; To this union three children were born, Jeffrey, Michael and Michelle.

Larry served in the United States Air Force and travelled extensively throughout the world during his 21 years of service. Larry&nbsp; and family resided in Tucson, Arizona; Fairbanks, Alaska; Omaha, Nebraska; Bangkok, Thailand where Larry worked at the American Embassy during the Vietnam War and Austin, Texas where they retired prior to moving back to Kansas in 2004.

Larry enjoyed traveling, playing cards, bowling, water skiing, all college sports, especially University of Texas basketball, and was an avid KC Chiefs fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel and Hope, two brothers, Royal and Dean, and a sister, Virginia Gardener.

Survivors are sons - Jeffrey and Michael of the home, daughter - Michelle Crocker and husband - Ken of Esbon, Kansas - grandson - Kyle Baker of Lorena, Texas; grandson - Daniel Crocker of Portland, Oregon, granddaughter - Brandy Crocker of Saginaw, Texas and great grandchildren - Evan and Riley of Saginaw, Texas; sister, Marilyn West, Lenexa, Kansas - brother-in-law - John Frost and wife - Lila of Esbon, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, July 12, 2021 at the Melby Mortuary in Mankato, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m.., Tuesday, July 13 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Esbon, Kansas, with Pastor Rod Rose officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Esbon Cemetery.

He graduated from Clay Center High School and served his country in the United State Navy during WWII. Walter worked for RCA as a telemetry engineer from 1955 – 1966, then from 1967 – 1971 for Sperry Rand as an electrical engineer for the Saturn V Apollo Missions, and from 1975 – 1990 for Black and Veach Engineering Company as a records manager before retiring. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Kiwanis, and the American Legion, all in Abilene. On June 13, 1948 Walter was united in marriage to Dorothy Sawin in LaPrairie, Illinois. She passed away September 25, 2014. Walter is also preceded in death by his sister DoraDeane Lips. Walter is survived by his son Gene and his wife Jan Hartman of Abilene, grandchildren Brian Hartman, Brad and his wife Jenell Hartman, and Cristin and her husband Pat Casteel, and five great-grandchildren. On February 6, 1951 she was united in marriage to Peter W. Hampton in Abilene. He preceded her in death June 9, 2020. They returned to Abilene after Pete was stationed in Florida. They moved into 804 NW 2nd just down the block from Pete’s parents. This was their home for 60 years. Great times and many wonderful memories for family and friends include front porch sitting, having coffee and cookies in the kitchen, and dinner parties with the good china in the dining room.

Betty is survived by her daughter Rebecca (Doug) Crumpton and their children Allyson (Jonathan) Maestas and their children, Isabel, Maisyn and Trey. Scott (Hannah) Crumpton and their daughter Addison. Mary Crumpton and Jordan Crumpton; son Paul (Linda) Hampton and their children Zack and Jess Hampton, Marty Mead, Mark Mead, and his three children Austin, Ethan and Matthew; and Suzanna and Bill Goatcher and Kaitlyn and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family graveside will be held at Union/Livingston Cemetery, rural Abilene.&nbsp;

Lois E. (Sturtevant) Johnson of Salina died on July 4, 2021 after 96 years of grit, grace and good times.&nbsp; Lois was a true Kansan.&nbsp; She was born and raised in Cimarron, Kansas where her parents, Charles and Catherine Sturtevant, published the newspaper.&nbsp; She was an accomplished musician and played saxophone in jazz and dance bands while attending Colorado University.&nbsp; Lois graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in food science.&nbsp; She married Byron (Johnson) and they raised cattle, wheat, and milo on a beautiful farm north of Salina, including during Byron’s service during World War II.

They also raised four children: Karen Khorasani (Fariborz), Martin Johnson (Mary), Nancy Swyers (Don) and Claire Dannenberg (Ken).&nbsp; Byron and Lois instilled their children with their values, including the importance of working hard while enjoying life to its fullest.&nbsp; Lois moved to Salina proper in her later years.&nbsp; She loved Salina, the rest of Kansas, and Green Mountain Falls, CO.&nbsp; Lois leaves behind many close friends.&nbsp; She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Virginia, and husband, Byron.

Sid enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country during the Vietnam War, including two deployments overseas. Following his honorable discharge, Sid worked as a licensed plumber and electrician.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion, and in his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, roping and horses.

Sid passed from this life on October 5, 2020, at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 1 day.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his three sons, Matthew Wesley in 1979, Trinity Jude in 1985, and Stacy Lee in 2017. Sid is also preceded in death by his sister Judy Vizner, and brother Garland Saip.

His memories will be forever cherished by his girlfriend, Donna Francis of Belleville, her children Angie Carrara of Junction City, Kansas, and Amy Graves, her husband Travis, of Belleville; and their children, Aubrey Durbin (Josh) of Manhattan, Kansas; Brianna Scalise (Joe) of Wrightwood, California; Saxton, Sabin, and Sadee Graves of Belleville; and three great-grandchildren.

Joseph Newton “Joe” DePoy passed away in his home in Glen Elder, KS on July 2nd, 2021 at the age of 70.

Joe is preceded in death by his mother Rosella Suter, father Maurice DePoy, step father Milton Suter, stepmother Iona DePoy and sister Carla Doxon.&nbsp; He is survived by his loving wife Jo Ellen DePoy, whom he married in 2009 after a long relationship.&nbsp; They have been together 32 years and loved each other dearly. 

Joe is lovingly remembered by his children, daughter Tyleigh Mattison of Hutchinson, KS, her husband Christopher and their two children Amaleigh and Joleigh; step daughter Jamie Conn of Beloit, KS, her husband Chris and their three children Braydon, Sydnie and Trace; step-son Joel Lomax of Solomon Rapids, his wife Mandy and their six children Alyssa, Kaden, John, Jordan, Cora and Silas; and daughter Jacki Watkins of Murdock and her husband Terry.&nbsp; Joe is also survived by his four brothers, Dan DePoy of Cawker City, KS, Allen DePoy of Cawker City, KS, and his wife Brenda, Wes DePoy of Beverly, KS and his wife Cindy, Carl Suter of Cawker City, KS, and brother-in-law Kurt Doxon of Edson, KS.&nbsp; He has many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews that he loved profoundly.&nbsp;

Joe was born in Beloit hospital on November 4, 1950.&nbsp; He grew up in Cawker City, KS on the family farm west of Waconda Springs. He graduated from Cawker City high school in 1968.&nbsp; He enlisted in the Air Force that same year and proudly served his country as a sargeant from 1968 to 1973.&nbsp; He was also a veteran of the Vietnam War.&nbsp; Upon returning to the Cawker City area, he attended school for auto mechanics from 1972-1973 and went to work for Moritz Implement as a mechanic for many years.&nbsp; He then furthered his education at Salina Vo-Tech school in 1989 and received his associate degree in mechanical drafting.&nbsp; He worked for Great Plains as a CAD operator for six years.&nbsp;

He received many academic accolades while attending school for both auto mechanics and mechanical drafting.&nbsp; He returned to Glen Elder in 1994 and worked for NAPA. &nbsp;Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandchildren, brothers and their children immensely.&nbsp; He was widely known for his skill in auto mechanics and was always helping someone in need.&nbsp; He treasured wood working as a skill and was extremely talented in making beautiful pieces for his family.&nbsp;

There will be a graveside service on Friday, July 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Prairie Grove cemetery in Cawker City, KS. It will be officiated by Graham Taylor of Glen Elder.

Helen’s life began on July 31, 1932, in Herington.&nbsp; She was the daughter of Henry and Lydia (Peil) Ruppel.&nbsp; Helen was a 1950 graduate of Herington High School.&nbsp; She was united in marriage to Walter William “Bill” Utech, Jr. on August 26, 1951, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Herington.&nbsp; 

Helen was a farm wife and homemaker.&nbsp; She was a great caregiver to her five children and husband.&nbsp; Helen was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies Aid group and helped serve many funeral dinners.&nbsp; She had also been a member of EHU in Herington.&nbsp; 

Her greatest joy was her family which includes her children Jonathan (Marlene) Utech of Manhattan, Dan Utech of New Cambria, Tim (Tonya) Utech of Herington and David (Linda) Utech of Weatherford, TX; grandchildren Brandon, Alan and Sarah Utech, Alicia (Nick) Vaughn, Anna (Joel) Hanson, Alison (Bradley)Smith, Tristan (Jake) Kirkland, Tyson (Nora) Utech, Nick (Patty) Utech, Brooke and Christopher Utech; and great-grandchildren Aria, Kayra, Brooklyn, Colt, Sydney, Sawyer, Samuel and Eleanor.&nbsp; 

Helen passed away on Monday July 5, 2021, at Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, daughter Susan Dudley, grandchildren Jennifer and Bret Utech, brothers Kenneth and Lawrence Ruppel, and sisters Betty Brown and Donna Kniebel.&nbsp; 

Helen’s family will gather with friends on Thursday, July 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Herington.&nbsp; Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 9 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church led by Pastor Bill Newman.&nbsp; She will be laid to rest in Sunset Hill Cemetery.&nbsp;

It is with great sadness that the family of William (Bill) Joseph Anderes of Hope, Kansas, announce his passing on Sunday, July 4, 2021. Bill just recently celebrated his 68th birthday. Bill was the eldest child of Vincent and Virginia Anderes and was to be followed by eight other siblings. Bill was a graduate of Chapman High School and then attended the Salina Area Vo-Tech. Bill spent most of his career as a mechanic in the Elmo community and was one of the best. Bill could fix almost anythin, didn’t matter what it was – big or small. He never knew a stranger and would give anyone the shirt off his back even if it meant he had none. He was kind-hearted and had a generous soul. Even at his death Bill was still thinking of others and was able to help the lives of others through cornea/eye donation through the Saving Sight Foundation.

Bill is survived by his three children John, Stacy and Leigh and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, eight brothers and sisters Rhonda Foth, Greg (Sharon); Diane Shoemaker (Rodney); Yvonne Woodall (Dennis); Kim Svoboda (Kevin); Mark (Jill); Mike and Lisa Elliott and lots of nieces and nephews.

Bill is proceeded in death by his parents Vincent and Virginia Anderes. He will be sadly missed by his family.

Rosary will be recited on Thursday, July 8 at 6:00 p.m. at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday at 10:30, July 9 at St. Columba Catholic Church in Elmo, Kansas with Father Soosi as celebrant. Bill’s final resting place will be at the Mount Calvary cemetery.

LoVaune graduated from Lindsborg High School and attended Bethany College. She married Ermal L. Rasmusson on June 6, 1953.

LoVaune loved to bake and enjoyed entertaining. Her Swedish heritage and spending time with her family were very important. The church was also a large part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother and sister. LoVaune is survived by daughters, Pam Duffy (Pat), and Karen Jilka (Mike); son Curt Rasmusson; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2021, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 255 S 7th St., Salina. Burial will be private in the Elmwood Cemetery, Lindsborg.

Ruth M. Macy, 86, Minneapolis, died Saturday, July 4, 2021.

Ruth Marie (Burks) Macy was born near Eskridge, KS in Wabaunsee County Kansas on June 18, 1935.&nbsp; She was the youngest of four children born to Oliver and Grace (Burkepile) Burks.&nbsp; She went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 4, 2021, having reached the age of 86 years and 16 days.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ruth’s family moved to Jewell County when she was a young girl.&nbsp; She graduated from Jewell High School in 1953.&nbsp; Following high school, she attended Miltonvale Wesleyan College where she met the love of her life, Jim Macy. They were united in marriage on June 3, 1956 in Mankato, KS.

Shortly after their marriage they moved to the Manhattan area where Jim attended KSU, and Ruth began teaching in a one room school in Westmoreland.&nbsp; Following Jim’s graduation, the couple lived in the Pratt and Osborne communities before moving to Minneapolis in 1966.&nbsp; Ruth substitute taught from 1966-1969.&nbsp; She started her own preschool, Minneapolis Mini School, in 1970 and continued teaching until her retirement in 2001.&nbsp; She was affectionately known in the Minneapolis and surrounding areas as Mrs. Macy, having taught many community members, their children, and grandchildren.&nbsp;

Ruth was a member of Hall Wesleyan Church of rural Delphos. In recent years she had been attending Bennington Bible Church in order to be near her family.&nbsp;

She took great joy in her family.&nbsp; She loved following her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s activities.&nbsp; Ruth also remained close to her extended family.&nbsp; She called everyone on their birthday to chat, including all of her nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Her greatest desire was that each one of them know Jesus personally and join her in heaven one day.

Ruth was active in her community.&nbsp; Most people knew her as “the peach lady,” as the Champlin family sold peaches in her driveway each summer.&nbsp; She was an avid Minneapolis Jr./Sr. High School sports fan.&nbsp; She and Jim attended sporting events whenever possible.&nbsp; She also considered it her honor to host young athletes for meals prior to their sporting events which were held directly across the street from her house.&nbsp; Ruth was an active member of Home Arts EHU, and Quest Club.&nbsp; She also hosted a weekly Bible study in her home each winter.&nbsp; For the past two years, Ruth had volunteered at Little Sam’s Preschool and became known to a new generation of preschoolers as “Grandma Macy.”

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim, brothers, Bob and Max, and sister Irene.

Survivors include her children Jay (Tammie), Janna (Kevin) Rash, grandchildren Drew (Kirsten) Crosson, Jordan (Ethan) Schuette, Dylan (Janay) Crosson, Kyler Macy, Ashlyn (Casy) Arganbright, Jacy (Blaine) Busenitz, Josh (Kylie) Macy, Jeff (Melissa) Rash, and great- grandchildren Nash Arganbright,&nbsp; Emme and Ainsley Crosson, Lyle James Schuette, Grady, Reagyn, and Lincoln Crosson, and Tenley and Adrie Busenitz, Korin Scruggs, and many nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. &nbsp;

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 6 at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis.&nbsp; Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 7 at the Bennington Bible Church, Bennington.&nbsp;

Darold Eugene Bradford, 86, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 3:45 p.m., Friday, July 2, 2021 peacefully at Pleasant View Home, Inman, Kansas. Darold was born in Galva, Kansas on October 28, 1934, a son of William Clarence and Violet Berle (Nichols) Bradford. Darold attended McPherson and Saline country schools and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1953. He was a member of First Baptist Church in McPherson. Darold was baptized on April 2, 1961 by Reverend Victor Trower. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Electrician Mate 3rd Class on the U.S.S. Frank E. Evans and he received the Good Conduct Medal.. Through the years Darold worked for Graves Drug Store, Moody's Apco, Kansas Cylinder Head, Swick Guth, Sterling Drug, and retired after 20 years of service from the maintenance department of Sanofi. Darold was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715, McPherson, Kansas. He enjoyed working in his workshop tinkering and loved his cats and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Darold Eugene Bradford was united in marriage to Carol Lee Bever on April 22, 1961 at McPherson, Kansas where they established their first home together. This union was blessed with the birth of a daughter and a son, Debra and Kevin. He is survived by his children, Debra D. Johnson and her husband Doug, of McPherson, Kansas and Kevin S. Bradford and his wife Kim, of Wichita, Kansas; his brother William "Bill" Bradford and his wife Neva, of Mountain City, Tennessee; other relatives and a host of friends. Barbara Jo (Blum) Marks, 74, of Salina and more recently Prairie Village, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 1, 2021. She was born January 19, 1947, in Omaha, the daughter of Allen and Josephine Blum, who lived for decades in the Topeka area.

Barbara was a sweet and loving mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband Ed and her parents.

Survivors include her son Tim Marks and daughters Katherine Gardner (Justin) and Jennifer Bailey (Daniel); her siblings Fran Carman (Rich), Carol Blum (Steve Wilson), and Allen Blum, Jr.; three grandchildren, Audrey, Lilah and Gavin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation with family will be 4-6 p.m. Monday, July 5, with private visitation from 6-8 p.m., at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina. Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, at Ryan Mortuary.

Dennis D. McWilliams, 73, of Salina, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2021. He was born October 19, 1947, in Manhattan, Kan., to Donald and Oneita (Chestnut) McWillilams. Dennis married Angela McCaslin on June 16, 1989, in Salina.

Dennis was proud of his western Kansas roots and bled purple for his K-State Wildcats. He was active at First Covenant Church, Salina, and retired from Great Plains Manufacturing after 26 years.

Survivors include: his wife Angie; children Misty Kramer (Steve), Jeremy McWilliams (Lindsay), Erin Scott (Luke), Bryan Weaverling (Tabitha); brothers Ron (Ann), Rob (Patti), and Larry McWilliams (Margaret); and grandchildren River Weaverling, Alayna Scott, Ava Weaverling, Ainsley Scott, Gabriel Kramer, and Trail Weaverling.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter Bridgett.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, with family present 6-7.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 8, at First Covenant Church, with burial to follow in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina.

Larry was a graduate of Minneapolis High School and he was currently working maintenance for the Minneapolis Housing Authority.&nbsp; He was a good man who had a love for motorcycles and his family.

Larry was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors are his sons Austin (Paige) and Clayton (Emily); mother and stepfather, Jackie and Ken Stelter; brother Johnnie (Karen); sisters Selena (Brian) Kindall and Celeste Goddard; and one grandson, Ryker.

Patricia L. Bender, 90, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2021 in Abilene, KS. She was born September 12, 1930 in Scandia, KS to Raymond and Grace (Sandborn) Cooper.

Patricia married Donald C. Bender on December 31, 1950. She was a longtime resident of Ellsworth, KS where she was the secretary for Ron Svaty at Aylward, Svaty, Sherman then Svaty, Sherman, Hoffman law offices. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Ellsworth.

Patricia is survived by her son Gregory Bender (Cynthia) of Ellsworth; daughters Gail Mayfield of Andover, KS, Geri Ranker (Dwayne) of Ellsworth, Gina Renz (Pat) of Ellsworth, and bonus daughter, Eeva Raitio (Juha) of Finland; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald; sisters Barbara Anderson and Jackie Hammeke; and son-in-law David A. Mayfield.

Visitation: 1-8 p.m., Thursday, July 8, 2021, with family present from 6-8 p.m. at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter who enjoyed the outdoors and exploring.&nbsp; Scott was a world traveler, visiting and working in the Middle East, China, Kuwait, Alaska and so many more destinations.&nbsp; 

He was united in marriage to Andrea (Shomaker) on December 24, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Marion.&nbsp; He is survived by his wife Andrea of Billings, MT; children Kathlynn (Tyler) Neufeld of Hesston, Elizabeth Carter of Topeka, and Herschel Carter of Billings, MT, parents Gerry and Cathy Henderson of Marion, siblings Andy Carter of Chicago, John Henderson of Austin, TX, and Barbara (Adam) Henderson White of Covington, KY and several nephews.&nbsp;
