KS died Sunday, May 23, 2021, at Trego-Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term 
Care - WaKeeney. She was born in WaKeeney on September 27, 1950.

Gloria Ann is preceded by her parents 
Michael and Armella Dreiling and brother Michael Dreiling, all of 
WaKeeney. Survivors are her husband Robert Korpi of WaKeeney, her 
brothers Arthur Dreiling of Missoula, Montana and Donald Dreiling of 
Mesa, Arizona. Also her daughter Julie McAnally of Assaria, Kansas, her 
Granddaughters Chelsea Weese of Manhattan, Kansas, Holly Hanks of 
Southbury, Connecticut, and Grandson Kenneth Bryce Hanks of Salina, 
Kansas and two Great Grandchildren.

Cremation is under the direction of 
Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Hays. A Memorial 
Services will be held sometime in the future.

Jack Lee Derowitsch, the son of Lloyd &amp; Arlene (Harmes) Derowitsch, was born on February 18, 1944, on the family farm, near Deshler, Nebraska.

Jack attended high school in Belleville, Kansas, 1958 to 1961, completed his GED and enlisted in the Navy on July 1, 1961. He was an Air Man Apprentice and Air Plane Dispatch Clerk on the USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) up to February 19, 1965.&nbsp; He then went on to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve from February 20, 1965 to June 30, 1967. Following his Navy honorable discharge and a civilian break, Jack enlisted in the Army National Guard Reserves July 13, 1987. He was stationed at the 995th Maintenance Company in Belleville, Kansas. He started as a Track Vehicle Repairer and gained rank as an E6 Staff Sergeant on November 8, 1994. He retired with honorable discharge on February 17, 2004.&nbsp; During his service, he completed two tours, one in Vietnam and one in Desert Storm. Jack gained four medals during his Navy service and 17 medals during the Army National Guard service.&nbsp; He retired serving a total of 22 years.

In his civilian life, he worked several miscellaneous jobs throughout the United States.&nbsp; One being a motorcycle police officer in Arizona. He had a passion for law enforcement and attended the Universal detective - Extensive Training division in Universal City, California. &nbsp;

In January 2006 he retired his supervisor role for the city of Salina Water Distribution Department.&nbsp; He briefly worked as a driver for Conklin Cars and then went on into another role as a maintenance liaison for the United Building.

Jack passed away on Monday, November 30, 2020, from COVID-19 at the Salina Regional Health Center, in Salina, Kansas at the age of 76. A cremation was planned.

Jack was a Christian man who loved family and friends and was known for his multiple skills. He enjoyed leather craft, woodworking, outdoor gardening, indoor plants, camping, fishing, golfing, bowling and gambling. He was known for his great sense of humor and had no problem with being very straightforward and direct.

He will be forever loved and remembered by his wife, Mary (Engelbert) Derowitsch.

His surviving children are: Jack Derowitsch Jr., Marty Derowitsch, Willard Derowitsch, Ryan Derowitsch, and his stepchildren: Erica (Horne) Hernandez, Tammy Kochevar; Kim Chandler Hernandez and his eight beautiful grandchildren.

His surviving siblings are two sisters: Sue (Derowitsch) Kearns, and Marla (Derowitsch) Wilson (Jerry), and one brother Lloyd (Ging) Derowitsch (Sue).

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Timothy Derowitsch.

Jack's celebration of life is post-COVID and scheduled at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home on Saturday, May 29, 2021, 1:00 p.m. followed by graveside services with military honors at Chester Nebraska Cemetery in Chester, Nebraska.

Neva Jean was born on January 20, 1927, in Narka, Kansas, the daughter of John W. &amp; Ella (Saip) McChesney. Neva attended Narka schools, graduating in 1945. Following high school, she attended Fairbury Junior College, obtaining her Teacher’s Certificate. Later, Neva returned to Fairbury Junior College, and then attended Emporia State University, obtaining her Bachelor’s degree.

Neva was married to Warren E. Joy on October 6, 1946, in Narka, and to this union three children were born, Vivian, Jonny &amp; Deb. They lived in Narka, and Neva worked as a school teacher at Ida country school, and then Munden Grade School and Cuba (later Hillcrest) Grade School.

Warren passed away on March 12, 1981, and Neva later remarried Eldon “Don” Hermes on June 26, 1982. Don passed away on May 7, 2007. Neva passed away on December 2, 2020, in Clyde, Kansas, at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 12 days, with her daughters at her side.

Neva is preceded in death by her parents John &amp; Ella, husband Warren in 1981, husband Don in 2007, son Jonny in 2012, and grandson Bradley Vest in 1985. Neva is also preceded in death by her brother Chester McChesney and his wife Nellie, brother Warren McChesney and his wife Mary, and brother Jim McChesney.

Neva will be forever remembered by her daughters, Deb Knox and husband Pat of Clyde, and Vivian Dirks of Meade, Kansas; grandchildren, Angie and husband Jeff Howard; Lisa and husband Cory DeLong; Shane DeLong; Christopher Knox; Matthew Knox and wife Kelsey; Tyson Knox and wife Colleen; Jason Joy and wife Angie; Jonathan “Jay” Joy and wife Shanna; Jamie Joy; Jennifer Joy; and Jana Clark. Neva is also survived by Eldon’s children, Russell James Hermes and his wife Jocelyn of Ohio, Sharon Joy Wilson and her husband Richard of Arizona, and Maridelle Anne Mehling and her husband John of New York. Neva is also survived by her&nbsp;24 Great Grandchildren and two Great Great Grandchildren; brother Jack McChesney and wife Eleanor, sister-in-law Joanne McChesney and many nieces, nephews, communities of friends, and many school children she taught over the years.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church in Narka, with committal services following at Maple Grove Cemetery, rural Narka. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service, at the church.

Gary Lee "Doc" Baehler, 66, of Hesston, Kansas, passed away at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, May 23, 2021, unexpectedly, at his home. Gary was born in Goodland, Kansas on November 21, 1954, a son of Helen (Langdon) and Everett Baehler. Gary attended the Sharon Springs grade schools and graduated from Wallace County Community High School, Sharon Springs, Kansas in 1972. He then attended and graduated from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas where he received his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1980. He was a member of Newspring Church in Wichita, Kansas. After graduating college, Gary worked in Colby, Kansas for several years and then in 1986 he opened his own practice in Hesston, Kansas known as Hesston Veterinary Clinic which he currently owned and operated. Gary was a member of member of the AVMA, served on the Harvey County 4-H Fair board and as a past 4-H leader, and was a member of the Hesston Chamber of Commerce. Gary enjoyed fishing, gardening, spending time with his grandkids, camping, attended all the girls' activities such as games, rodeos, livestock and horse shows and was their biggest supporter. Gary felt blessed having the clients that he had, the community he served, and had a true compassion for animals. Out of his first marriage came two wonderful girls, Kendra and Krista. His girls were the light of his life and delighted in helping them in the lessons of life. He was a great teacher and loved sharing his knowledge with all around him.

The couple established their first home togetherin rural Moundridge, Kansas. Pepa showed unconditional love to his girls, wife, his sisters, and carried on to his stepchildren and grandchildren. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 12 years, Julie Baehler of Moundridge, Kansas; his daughter Kendra Hopp and husband Brian of McPherson, Kansas; his stepchildren Madison M. Webb and husband Chad, of Lenexa, Kansas, Mikayla R. Barber, of Hesston, Kansas, Michael M. Roberta Josephine (Bobby Jo)(Milner) Mog , formerly of rural Wilson, KS, passed away Friday, February 5, 2021 in Thornton, Colorado at the age of 93.

Bobby Jo was born to Gus C. and Bernece Lancaster Milner on November 25, 1927, in the small southeastern Kansas town of Virgil.&nbsp; Bobby Jo hit the ground running - literally speaking - with her dog and best friend Mary Lou, and she roamed the country side as an extremely curious young girl.&nbsp; Bobby Jo enjoyed her many adventures with brothers William (Bill), Kenneth Lee, and little sister Karen Louise Kerby, all surviving.&nbsp; The siblings have many a story to tell of Bobby Jo’s antics and adventures.

Having been diagnosed as deaf at a very young age, Bobby Jo was off to Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD) in Olathe, Kansas, where she studied and excelled until her graduation in 1947.&nbsp; During her tenure she served as editor in chief for the Jackrabbit, the school paper, and year book. She was senior class v.p. and salutatorian. Her little sister Karen claims Bobby Jo took great care with her as they traveled by train the 200-plus miles to KSD.&nbsp; She tells the story of Bobby Jo going to the dormitories for the younger children every morning to braid Karen’s long hair.&nbsp; It was at KSD that she met the love of her life, John Clement Mog (who preceded her in death in 2007.) &nbsp;Growing up near one another in rural central Kansas they spent a good amount of time together, including the commute to and from the deaf school. It took five years after her graduation before they married, however, as Bobby Jo had many adventures she needed to undertake. Her senior yearbook quote was “The whole wide World seems Small to Me”.&nbsp;

On May 19, 1952 John and Roberta married and moved into their home on the Mog family farm in Noble Township near Wilson, Kansas, where she lived for most of her life. Life on the farm was hard, but she loved it. She bore five children in the old stone house, all of whom survive her: Bryce Robin in 1953, John Robert (Walber) in 1955, Terrance Lynn (Suzette) in 1956, Mary Ann (Marty Sweat) in 1958 and James Gregory (Betsy) in 1960. Roberta loved to garden and preserve all kinds of fruits vegetables.&nbsp; She would scour the countryside looking for wild plums, chokecherries and elderberries to make her jellies and jams.

Roberta was extremely committed to the deaf community, serving on the original Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the 1980s, as well as numerous officer positions in the local deaf clubs in Hays, Hutchinson, and Salina. Her strong opinions on all matters deaf and otherwise were always well known.

Roberta worked many jobs during her years on the farm, finally retiring from Cashco in Ellsworth.&nbsp; Upon her retirement, she and John traveled thousands of miles visiting national parks, family and friends. She also visited Europe with her son John.&nbsp; She spent countless hours sewing and quilting, attending quilting conventions throughout the country with her daughter Mary and many other friends.&nbsp; She completed quilts for every member of her family, which is quite extensive. Along with her children she is survived by eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, each receiving at least one handmade masterpiece.

&nbsp;Funeral services for Roberta will be held on May 28, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Ellsworth, KS. &nbsp;Burial will follow at the Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery.&nbsp; A celebration of her life will be held afterward in the church hall.

Audrey Marie (Appleby) Diamond was born on December 21, 1930, and passed away at Good Samaritan Society Home in Superior, Nebraska, on May 21, 2021, at the age of 90 years and 5 months.

Audrey was born to Howard and Argie (Pierce) Appleby on their farm near Formoso, Kansas. Audrey spent her entire life in Jewell County, with the exception of six summers when she attended Fort Hays State, acquiring a teaching certificate.

As a child, Audrey attended Hawthorne Country School for 7 ½ years, and Formoso for ½ year. She attended Lovewell High for 3 years, and Formoso High her senior year, graduating in 1948. In the fall of 1948, she began her teaching career and taught for a total of six years in Webber, Woodlawn Country (rural Jewell Co.), and Jewell schools. Audrey enjoyed her students very much, and would reminisce about them often. After teaching, she was a hardworking farm wife.

On August 10, 1952, she married Bertus Diamond at her home in Formoso. They enjoyed sixty years together. To this union two children were born: Ricky Wayne of Mankato, Kansas, and Rebecca Ann (Becky) of Kearney, Nebraska. Bert was a farmer, and they spent most of their married life on a farm in Sinclair Township. In 1996, they retired and moved to Mankato.

Audrey was baptized in the Courtland Christian Church on March 18, 1951. She belonged to the Lovewell Methodist Church, and later the Webber Methodist Church, and was involved in women’s groups of both congregations. She could always be counted on to donate chickens for any soup supper.

Audrey loved communicating with neighbors and family. She was a member of the Lovewell Library Club, and worked as a reporter for the Jewell County Record. She was a dedicated and delightful pen pal, especially to her relatives and great-grandchildren. She was a whiz at word games, like Scrabble, and loved a good crossword puzzle. She also loved playing cards, and was known to play kickball with her great-grandkids from time to time as well.

Audrey had various hobbies and interests. She loved collecting coins and angel figurines. She had a tender sport for most living creatures, but feeding “her” birds was of the utmost importance. Audrey was an accomplished seamstress, from upholstering furniture to making clothes for her entire family. In later years, she began quilting, and delighted the family with her generous gifts. But her greatest pleasure was extending hospitality to any visitor and supplying them with her fresh baked goods. In her home, there was always a cup of coffee available.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Bert; her parents, two brothers, Edwin and Arnold; an infant sister, Doris, and nephew Ward Appleby. She is survived by a sister, Eileen Erickson of Courtland, Kansas; a brother, Dennis Appleby of Wichita Falls, Texas; son Rick Diamond (Sheila) of Mankato, daughter Becky Butts (Mark) of Kearney, three granddaughters: Nicolette Zeigler (Travis) of Wamego, Kansas; Ashley Clark (Derek) of Superior, Nebraska; and Erin Johnson (Tyler) of Urbandale, Iowa; great-grandchildren Byron and Jackson Zeigler; Dayne and Levi Clark; Addilyn Asher, Elias and Albert Johnson.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, May 27, 2021, at the Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato with Pastor Jim Rice officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mankato.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 26, from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Melby Mortuary in Mankato, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Memorials are requested to the Jewell County Ambulance Service and the Harmony United Methodist Church, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Tennie Williams of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 21, 2021, at McPherson Hospital. She was 101 years of age. Tennie was born on April 10, 1920, in rural Douglas County, MO, to the late Rev. Caleb and Nancy (Huff) Maggard. Tennie, as a young girl, was saved and baptized under her father’s ministry at Mt. Olive Baptist Church at Ongo, MO. She married Fred Williams in Springfield, MO, on September 11, 1939. This union was blessed with two daughters, DeAnn and Bette. Fred preceded her in death on April 11, 1977. She was a member of Newlife Foursquare Church and Assembly of God, both of McPherson. She lived a godly life and was a prayer warrior. She was a prayer chairman for Women’s Aglow International. She was a Sunday school teacher for the very young and enjoyed putting the lessons together. She loved The Word and read for hours in her room at Pleasant View Home, Inman. Her home was always open for people to come and pray, to fellowship, and to break bread together. She loved to cook and entertain. She cooked for the Central College biology students when they came to her country home. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She taught them the Word of God and prayed with them during happy and sad times. She babysat them, loving every minute. She rode three-wheelers and dirt bikes, and even with some upsets, enjoyed it. She was preceded in death by her parents; sons-in-law Beauferd Schmidt and Don Kennedy; sisters Nora Stillings, Lois Fitzgerald, Janice Lawrence, Nina Mae Roberts, and Gladys Huff; brothers Roy, Arthur, Lincoln, Hiram, Glen, Otto, and David Maggard; and a step-grandchild, Susie Durbin. He was a retired Lindsborg dentist. Walden was born November 30, 1931, on the family farm near Dresden, Kansas, the son of Raynold G. and Elsa (Holmdahl) Peterson. He graduated from Marquette High School in 1949, North Park College in Chicago, Bethany College in 1954, and UMKC School of Dentistry in 1958. He was a member of Lindsborg Evangelical Covenant Church. Survivors include: his loving wife of 62 years, Ruth of the home; two sons, Mark Peterson (Joyce) of Lindsborg, KS and Ralph Peterson (Susan) of Billings, MT; daughter-in-law, Dr. Michelle Klem of Denver, CO; ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Erma Choitz, 87, passed away Friday, May 21, 2021 in Wilson. She was born December 17, 1933 on a small farm near Bazaar, KS to Herman and Caroline (Paulson) Wehrenberg.

Erma was an only child and spent countless hour spending time and playing with her loving parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was baptized and confirmed at the Grace Lutheran Church in Strong City, KS. Due to the failing economy in the 1930s and 1940s, her parents lost the farm and moved to Emporia, KS. Over time her mother became ill with cancer and later died while she was still a teenager. After high school graduation, she attended Emporia State University, then St. John's College in Winfield, KS, graduating with a teaching degree. She was assigned to teach at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lincoln County, KS.

After relocation to Lincoln County, she met Lawrence "Shorty" Choitz at the roller skating rink in Ellsworth. After several months of dating, they were married on December 26,1955 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia. Erma taught school for another couple of years; then she and Shorty decided to start a family. They rented a house from a neighbor until they were able to purchase and move onto the current family farm, where they raised their three children. She was a homemaker until her second child, Bobby, was old enough to go to school, later working as a cook at the Good Samaritan Society nursing home for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in north Ellsworth County.

Erma enjoyed traveling and camping. They joined a camping group and could not wait to go to the lake. They traveled to Texas a few years over the winter months, hung out with old friends and made new ones. They played Mexican train dominoes and Pegs &amp; Jokers game for hours on end. 

Erma also enjoyed her family. She helped watch the grandchildren whenever needed for the day or picked them up from school. She sat patiently at the swimming pool watching and waiting until that special grandchild had their fill of swimming. She was the most patient person, dealing with what her husband, kids, co-workers, neighbors, and grandchildren threw at her.

Erma is survived by her daughter Mary Meier (Randy) of Lincoln; son Bob Choitz (Megan) of Ellsworth; grandchildren Derek Meier, Michelle Hair (Michael), and Gunner Choitz; and great-grandchildren Dane and Grant Meier, and Lyle, Elisa, and Ian Hair. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lawrence "Shorty" Choitz; son Larry Choitz; and infant daughter Rita Kay Choitz.

Visitation: 1-8 p.m., Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth with family present 6-8 p.m.

She was assigned to teach at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lincoln County, KS.After relocation to Lincoln County, she met Lawrence "Shorty" Choitz at the roller skating rink in Ellsworth. After several months of dating, they were married on December 26,1955 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia. Erma taught school for another couple of years; then she and Shorty decided to start a family. They rented a house from a neighbor until they were able to purchase and move onto the current family farm, where they raised their three children. She was a homemaker until her second child, Bobby, was old enough to go to school, later working as a cook at the Good Samaritan Society nursing home for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in north Ellsworth County.Erma enjoyed traveling and camping. They joined a camping group and could not wait to go to the lake. They traveled to Texas a few years over the winter months, hung out with old friends and made new ones. They played Mexican train dominoes and Pegs &amp; Jokers game for hours on end. Erma also enjoyed her family. She helped watch the grandchildren whenever needed for the day or picked them up from school. She sat patiently at the swimming pool watching and waiting until that special grandchild had their fill of swimming. She was the most patient person, dealing with what her husband, kids, co-workers, neighbors, and grandchildren threw at her.Erma is survived by her daughter Mary Meier (Randy) of Lincoln; son Bob Choitz (Megan) of Ellsworth; grandchildren Derek Meier, Michelle Hair (Michael), and Gunner Choitz; and great-grandchildren Dane and Grant Meier, and Lyle, Elisa, and Ian Hair. Mark “Papa” Darin Brightbill, 55, of Salina, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, May 21, 2021.&nbsp; Mark was born in Salina on April 22, 1966, to Fred and Ardyth (Sims) Brightbill.&nbsp;

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Karen, Salina; daughter Laney Roths (Dustin), Hays; son Mason (Grace), Overland Park; and two grandchildren, his pride and joy, Nolan and Scarlett Roths.

Mark is also survived by his parents Fred and Ardyth Brightbill; siblings Scott Brightbill, Trace Brightbill (Sandy), and Nicole Wisbey (Steve), all of Salina; his father and mother-in-law Austin and Barbara Allen, Salina; brothers-in-law Rick Allen (Theresa), Shawnee, and Ron Allen (Sandy), Seattle, Wash.; and sister-in-law, Kathy Clark (Chris), Salina; several nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends. This list would not be complete without mentioning his best friend, faithful canine companion, and napping partner, Zoe.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Frank and Thelma Brightbill, and Wilson and Letta Sims, Salina.

Mark attended Kansas State University upon graduating from Salina South High School.&nbsp; His Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis put his college career on hold while he received treatment. During that time he worked various jobs, including A&amp;B Machine, where he grew up working side by side with his father and brothers.&nbsp;

While in Salina, he met and fell in love with his lifetime partner, and they were united in marriage on October 11, 1986, at First Covenant Church.&nbsp; His mechanical background landed him a position with Boeing Aerospace Operations working on the B1B bomber simulator in Alabama, Texas, and Wichita, Kan.&nbsp; Family ties brought them back to Salina where he completed his degree in mechanical engineering at K-State Salina.&nbsp; His skills were put to use at KASA Industrial Controls and Exline until he found his way back to his roots at A&amp;B Machine.&nbsp; Mark and Karen purchased A&amp;B from his parents and ran it for 10 years before his health forced him to retire in 2019.

Mark’s successful career waned in comparison to his personal success as a husband, father, Papa, son, uncle, and friend.&nbsp; He will forever be remembered for his love of life, whether it was playing cards and games, restoring cars, creating art, playing golf, or his favorite passion – weekend fishing with his friends of the Air Capital Bass Masters Club or trips to Texoma with family and friends.&nbsp; 

Mark found ways to make an impact without being in the spotlight.&nbsp; His behind the scenes giving, truly from the heart, benefitted many in the community.&nbsp; He was always thinking of others and lending an ear.&nbsp; His grit and determination to walk his daughter down the aisle awarded him the Mettle of Honor at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in 2016.&nbsp; Mark’s claim to fame was his debut as Mr. August in the Madonna 2016 calendar.&nbsp; He was also active in Relay for Life and volunteered at Camp Hope, a camp for children who have or have had cancer.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 27 from 4-8 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th, Salina, Kan., with family present from 6-8.&nbsp; A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 28 at First Covenant Church, 2625 E. Magnolia Rd., Salina, Kan., followed by a graveside service at All Saints Catholic Cemetery.&nbsp;

Over the many years of Keith's life he enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking, photography, collecting rare and interesting rocks, and the company of his family. Keith is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan; daughter Crystal Boyer and husband Curtis of Solomon; daughter Jenny Thompson and husband Jason of Salina; son Allen Davis and fiancé Jackie of Springfield, Missouri; sister Cynthia Davis of Ohio; and ten grandchildren -&nbsp; Clayten, Isabella, Grace, Emma Gayle, Lily, Jordan, Jackson, Madelyn, Emma Jean, and Cameron. Lida Joan Wheatley, 96, a longtime resident of Holton, died on May 20, 2021 at The Pines in Holton. Joan was born on&nbsp; October 29, 1924 near Idana, Kansas, the daughter of James Warren and Carrie Mary (Carpenter) Isensee.&nbsp; She graduated from Clay County Community High School in 1943.&nbsp; Soon after, with WWII casualties mounting, Joan volunteered for the U.S. Army Cadet nursing program at Jane C. Stormont Hospital in Topeka, graduating in 1947.

On Easter morning, April 17, 1949, Joan married her true love, Dr. Joseph S. Wheatley, at her parent’s residence in Idana.&nbsp; In 1955, Joan and Joseph welcomed Pamela Jo and soon after the Wheatleys settled in south Chicago where Joan worked along side her husband at their veterinary clinic, The Excanaba Animal Hospital.&nbsp; In 1958, they welcomed their second child, Michael Joseph.

After the untimely death of her husband in 1968, Joan moved with her two children to Holton to be near her sister, Margaret Eubanks.&nbsp;

In 1991, Joan experienced a tremendous joy when her daughter gave birth to her granddaughter, Emily Joann Lutz.&nbsp; Joan dedicated her remaining years to her children, grandchild, relatives, friends, community and faith.&nbsp; Joan will be remembered as a loving, cheerful and thoughtful presence that exemplified the true meaning of being a Christian.

She is also preceded in death by her parents, sister, and brother in-law, Margaret (Isensee) and Roger Eubanks.

Wheatley, at her parent’s residence in Idana.&nbsp; In 1955, Joan and Joseph welcomed Pamela Jo and soon after the Wheatleys settled in south Chicago where Joan worked along side her husband at their veterinary clinic, The Excanaba Animal Hospital.&nbsp; In 1958, they welcomed their second child, Michael Joseph.After the untimely death of her husband in 1968, Joan moved with her two children to Holton to be near her sister, Margaret Eubanks.&nbsp;In 1991, Joan experienced a tremendous joy when her daughter gave birth to her granddaughter, Emily Joann Lutz.&nbsp; Joan dedicated her remaining years to her children, grandchild, relatives, friends, community and faith.&nbsp; Joan will be remembered as a loving, cheerful and thoughtful presence that exemplified the true meaning of being a Christian.She is also preceded in death by her parents, sister, and brother in-law, Margaret (Isensee) and Roger Eubanks.Survivors:Daughter: Pamela J. Ilene Winkel was born in a farmhouse on July 5, 1947 near Scandia, KS. A sister with two brothers in the country, Ilene quickly learned how to be fiercely independent and tough.

Ilene attended a small, one-room schoolhouse near Scandia until she moved to Mankato, KS during the formative years of her life. She played recreational softball and played on the farm with her brothers and friends, further defining her fighting spirit.

Ilene also made her own clothes using the money she earned cleaning homes. Her mother, Veda, let Ilene borrow her prized sewing machine to create these clothes. This began Ilene's love for design and decoration.

After the birth of her three daughters, Ilene worked as a single mother to support and raise strong, independent children. Whatever it was, Ilene made it happen. She put her family first through difficult times and toiled to provide a sense of normalcy amidst chaos.

They met at a divorce support group sponsored by the Friends Church. On one occasion, the group went out for pizza and a drive around the nearby lake. Fortunately, Ray managed to sit in the back seat with Ilene. Much to his dismay, she pulled an enormous pillow out of thin air and placed it firmly between them. It was kind of like Maverick striking out in a scene from Top Gun. He finally got her to go out on a date for his birthday, but he had to fudge the exact date.The years went by swiftly, but they created so many memories of trips to Colorado, Arizona, Florida, New York, and many other places with family and friends. Whether by camper or by plane, the two of them were always searching for a new adventure in nature. Two highlights of their trips were taking Ilene’s grandson to see the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 and visiting West Point to see her granddaughter graduate on May 21, 2016.Ray truly believes the Lord brought them together. Ilene took care of Ray day-to-day, and similarly, Ray showed his immense adoration for Ilene even when she became very ill.Throughout her life, Ilene had an uncanny eye for design and decoration. She constantly made little adjustments here, changed a little color there, and maybe added a different chair to go with that table. This persistence and inability to settle for less was a highlight of her personality. HGTV really missed out on a great opportunity with Ilene, but it seems the Lord has called upon her skills to spruce up heaven a little bit.Up until the end, Ilene was a fighter. Surviving breast cancer in 1994, lymphoma in 2013, and breast cancer again in 2018, her strength is nothing short of inspiring. Ilene is still a role model to all who knew her. She was stubborn, she was tenacious, and most of all, she never quit. She passed peacefully on May 18, 2021 surrounded by her family. She had earned the right to rest.She was preceded in death by her father Harlan Elbert Sandell Sr., mother Veda (Mauk) Sandell, twin brother Harlan Elbert Sandell Jr., younger brother Rodney Sandell, and great grandson Jasper Wickham.Ilene is survived by her husband Ray Winkel, daughter Sandy Albright and husband Jim Albright, daughter Julie Pickle and husband Bryan Pickle, daughter Crystal Downey and husband Scott Downey, son Mark Winkel and wife Chelsea Winkel, and six grandchildren.Funeral services will be at 10a.m. Monday, May 24 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City followed by burial in Athens Cemetery north of Glen Elder. A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church, and visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the rosary service begins.
