CONCORDIA&nbsp; -- A new athletic facility is closer to reality after the Cloud County Community College Foundation received a $200,000 grant from the Sunderland Foundation.

The grant will be used to support the construction of an athletic facility on the Concordia campus. The state-of-the-art facility will allow Cloud athletes the ability to train and work on their skills in ways that have not been possible in the past. It will also serve as a recruiting tool for prospective student-athletes.

“We are all very excited to hear the news and appreciate the generosity of the Sunderland Foundation,” said CCCC Athletic Director Matt Bechard. “This amazing gift brings us a step closer to completing this project.”

The 20,680 square foot will feature a full-size basketball court, weight room, track runway, multi-purpose area, storage, and restrooms. It will be used by all 12 intercollegiate programs on campus.

“This is an amazing start to this huge fundraising effort&nbsp;and we are so incredibly grateful to have the continued support of The Sunderland Foundation,” said Cloud County Community College Foundation Director Heather Gennette. “We hope that this will be the push we need to entice others to donate to this much-needed facility.”

The CCCC foundation has already secured nearly $128,000 in additional funds to be used for the new building. Gennette said the foundation will continue to pursue additional grant opportunities, partnerships, and fundraising to raise the $1.1 million needed for the project.

The Kansas City-based Sunderland Foundation was established in 1945. Since its inception, it has focused on supporting construction projects and awarding grants to tax-exempt organizations.&nbsp;In 2019, the Sunderland Foundation awarded more than $150 million to hospitals and health care organizations, human services nonprofits, higher education institutions, and arts and culture projects.

According to a news release from the department, on Monday afternoon, the McPherson Police Department received a report concerning a 13-year-old student possibly threatening to commit violence at the McPherson Middle School. The McPherson Police Department has investigated the incident and taken the student into custody for disorderly conduct, the news release noted.

Clay County Medical Center restricts visitation

Beginning today, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be replacing sections of pavement on East Key Avenue between Belmont Boulevard and East Neal Avenue.

East Key Avenue will remain open to thru traffic; motorists are encouraged to use caution when traveling in the active work area. Weather permitting, the repairs are expected to be completed within one to two weeks.

An Oklahoma man was arrested after a Salina company's Freightliner went missing in Oklahoma.

Personnel at Bohm Farm and Ranch, 1050 East Pacific Avenue, told police on Saturday that a 2007 Freightliner pulling a 53-foot trailer was supposed to go to Oklahoma and then make a delivery in Wichita, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

Company personnel became concerned, however, when the delivery was not made in Wichita and the tractor-trailer rig's GPS showed it driving all over Oklahoma, Forrester said. The tractor-trailer rig was valued at $50,000, he said.

The driver, Brian Goldsberry, 42, of Oklahoma City, Okla., was finally stopped in Chandler, Okla., and arrested on suspicion of felony theft, Forrester said.

The man reported to police that a 42-inch Vizio television with soundbar valued at $500 and a 65-inch TCL television valued at $700 were missing from his residence, Forrester said.

According to Forrester, there are no suspects, however, police are attempting to obtain surveillance video from the area.

Two TVs reported stolen from north Salina residence

Two Salina men were arrested on suspicion of multiple forgeries Friday morning after a chase through town and part of the county that reached speeds of up to 100 mph.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were called to First Bank Kansas, 235 South Santa Fe Avenue, shortly before 10 a.m. Friday for the report of Timothy J. Halpain, 29, of Salina, attempting to cash a forged check. When officers arrived, a gray 2006 Honda Civic driven by Michael D. Metzger, 32, of Salina, with Halpain in the passenger seat, pulled out of the First Bank Kansas parking lot onto South Santa Fe Avenue, Forrester said.

According to Forrester, Halpain and Metzger were known to be suspects in multiple forgeries in which forged checks were cashed at businesses throughout Salina from Jan. 2 to Friday. 

The officers attempted to make a traffic stop, but the car headed west on West Walnut Street at approximately 40 mph, he said. The chase continued through mutliple west-central Salina neighborhoods, sometimes reaching speeds as high as 50 mph, Forrester said.

The Civic eventually headed west on Crawford at approximately 50 mph, and ran a red light at the Broadway Boulevard intersection, he said. The car continued west out of Salina at speeds up to 100 mph, Forrester said. As the Salina Police Department ended its pursuit, the car was seen traveling south on South Burma Road, he said. 

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said deputies picked up the pursuit at that point. The car, which had a spare "donut" tire on the back, continued at 65-70 mph, he said. The vehicle turned west on West Water Well Road, south on South Powers Road, and west on West Farrelly Road until it attempted to turn north onto South Link Road by the Smoky Hill Weapons Range and turned in front of a Saline County Sheriff's Office SUV, causing a collision, and ending the chase, Soldan said.

Both suspects and the deputy driving the SUV complained of back pain and were transported to Salina Regional Health Center, where they were treated and released, Soldan said. Metzger and Halpain were arrested, he added.

Once the Salina Police Department's pursuit ended on West Crawford Street, officers went back to First Bank Kansas and learned that Halpain had been attempting to cash an $865 check on the account of Salina Investments, LLC, Motel 6, Forrester said. The bank had been alerted by Salina Investments after six other fraudulent checks totaling approximately $4,000, had been written and cashed on the company's account, he said.

Additionally, Metzger and Halpain are suspected in the following other forged check cases, Forrester said.

Two checks totaling $1,600 forged on the account of Southwest Deed and Title

Five checks totaling approximately $2,600 forged on the account of Team Employment

Two Salina men arrested in connection to multiple forgeries after high-speed chase

KIPP -- A 42-year-old Kipp man was arrested late Sunday on suspicion of indecent liberties with a child and sexual exploitation of a child.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies were sent to the 100 block of East Main Street in Kipp Sunday night after a family member of one of two girls allegedly involved in the case notified authorities. The two girls, who are acquainted, are ages 17 and 15, he said.

The girls reported that Chad M. Cutbirth, 42, of Kipp, fondled one of the girls and sent to both them via social media obscene photos, Soldan said. Both girls are acquainted with Cutbirth, Soldan said.

Cutbirth was arrested on suspicion of the following, Soldan said.

WICHITA -- Wichita State University has announced the names of more than 3,300 students who were on the WSU dean's honor roll for fall 2019.

“How many bodies can you store in the cold rooms?”&nbsp; We faced this question over two decades ago as university personnel charged with disaster planning. I was in a biology department and one of the HAZMAT team. We were drafting a plan for handling a repeat of the influenza of 1918, a pandemic that took more lives on a daily basis than any other disease.

This specific question revealed that our local hospital would not have enough space in the morgue to accommodate the number of deaths. Our walk-in temperature-controlled rooms could take some of the overflow. The university would also close down. Students living nearby would be sent home. International and more distant domestic students would stay in the dorms and be supplied with food.

Our animal care and use committee would have to decide whether we would euthanize our laboratory mice or whether a staff member would take on the duty of caring for the animals. Otherwise, we would cease operating and “stand in place” in an attempt to prevent the spread of this flu virus strain if it returned.

Why are some types of flu mild while some are far more virulent? That takes learning some flu science and what the letters and numbers, such as AH5N1 and BH1N1, mean.

Influenza A viruses occur in other animals such as ducks, seals, chickens, pigs, whales, horses and cats. But influenza B viruses circulate only among humans. (There is a C virus that causes mild flu cases, and a D influenza only found in cattle.)

Influenza A viruses are then grouped in subtypes based on differences in “H” and “N” proteins on the surface of the virus: hemagglutinin and neuraminidase. According to the CDC, “there are 18 different hemagglutinin subtypes and 11 different neuraminidase subtypes. All known subtypes of influenza A viruses have been found among birds, except subtype H17N10 and H18N11 which have only been found in bats. While it is unusual for people to get influenza infections directly from animals, sporadic human infections and outbreaks caused by certain avian influenza A viruses have been reported.”

The 1918 flu pandemic was caused by an AH1N1 virus of avian origin. Despite the common name “Spanish flu,” it was first identified in soldiers at Fort Riley in Kansas. The CDC estimates “...about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States.” Our crowded troop ships carried soldiers with this flu to Europe. At this time there were no anti-viral drugs—indeed viruses were not yet understood and a bacterium was suspected.

Antibiotics would not be developed until World War II, and antibiotics are useless against viruses. The main defense against viruses are vaccines that stimulate our immune systems to form antibodies. If the virus does not rapidly evolve differences, as in the case of smallpox and polio, we can eliminate a virus by vaccination (successful with smallpox, still pending with polio).

Unfortunately, influenza evolves rapidly and especially in highly populated cities. Each year there is an educated guess on which new influenza strains have arisen that will spread the following year. Again the CDC explains: “One influenza A(H1N1, one influenza A(H3N2, and one or two influenza B viruses (depending on the vaccine) are included in each season’s influenza vaccines. Getting a flu vaccine can protect against flu viruses that are like the viruses used to make vaccine.”

While everyone is focused on the Wuhan coronavirus, China’s Ministry of Agriculture just reported (February 1) an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu at a farm in Hunan. 4,500 of the 7,850 chickens died of the bird flu. The remainder were destroyed and no humans contracted the flu. In 2013, another avian influenza A(H7N9) virus arose in China and caused 1,568 human infections. Approximately 39 percent of those who contracted it died, but it does not spread easily between people. The CDC states: “If it did, experts believe it could result in a pandemic with severity comparable to the 1918 pandemic.” The danger from a coronavirus or flu virus depends on how pathogenic it is (case-fatality rate, how easily it is spread human-to-human, how long a carrier is contagious, and whether carriers always present symptoms.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The willingness of the highly-crowded Chinese population to stay-in-place to control the spread of potentially pandemic viral diseases is simply not recognized by the Western people or press.&nbsp; Americans focus more on rights than responsibility. And American science education—and therefore public understanding—is abysmal by international standards.

Returning to the planning of a university shutdown in the face of a return of the 1918 flu strain, I asked about quarantine roadblocks. The answer was “no.” &nbsp;

Americans want their freedom of movement. In this case: a freedom to die. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The presentation is scheduled to include a Land of Opportunity viewing, a story of integration and the fight for housing rights across the United States following the Great Depression. The documentary was created by Nico Wiggins, who also narrates the video. A discussion will follow. Food is to be provided.

Commissioners are scheduled to begin with a study session at 2:30 p.m. Monday in room 107B of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street. The topic of the study session is a sanitayion services update. A time for public comment during the study session is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.

The regular commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in room 107 of the City-County Building. A time for public comment is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting.

Commissioners are being asked to consider the following two proclamations.

Proclaim the day of Feb. 14, 2020, as League of Women Voters Voting Rights Day in the City of Salina and recognize the 100th anniversary of the League of Women Voters. Lori Trow, president of the Salina League of Women Voters, is scheduled to read the proclamation.

Proclaim the month of February 2020 as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month in the City of Salina. Andrew Lagerman, DVACK victim advocate, is scheduled to read the proclamation.

SALINE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating an injury accident that occurred just before 4p.m. Sunday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported an unknown vehicle was southbound on Niles Road and struck a 2007 Ford Edge driven by Tina Marie Karber, 20,&nbsp; Gypsum, who was eastbound on Farrelly Road.&nbsp; &nbsp;The unknown vehicle then left the scene, according to the KHP.

EMS transported&nbsp; Karber and a passenger&nbsp;  Shelbie Arlene Thummel, 28, Salina, to the hospital in Salina.

The occupants of the Ford were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.
