MANHATTAN– Kansas State University has awarded Kassebaum Scholarships to five high school seniors.

The scholarship competition was held earlier this semester. K-State received a significant number of applications, and a selection committee chose seven student finalists to interview for the Kassebaum Scholarship. Of those interviewed, William Bannister, a senior from Manhattan High School,&nbsp;Manhattan; Ethan Brown, a senior from Salina Central High School,&nbsp;Salina; Nicholas Saia, a senior from Olathe Northwest,&nbsp;Olathe; Bryce Smith, a senior from Lawrence High School,&nbsp;Lawrence&nbsp;and Jade Valdez-Gomez, a senior from Garden City High School,&nbsp;Garden City&nbsp;were chosen to receive a $5,000 scholarship.

Named in honor of former Kansas Sen. Nancy Kassebaum-Baker, the Kassebaum Scholarship recognizes students, whose academic and extracurricular achievements reflect the potential for and desire to make a difference through energetic leadership in the public service arena.

The Kassebaum Scholarship has been awarded to 125 students since its inception in 2001. K-State leads all public universities in Truman, Rhodes, Goldwater and Udall scholars. Often recipients of these prestigious scholarships come from the Kassebaum Scholarship program.

Finalists for Kansas State University's Kassebaum Scholarship include the following high school seniors:

Central's Brown receives KSU's Kassebaum Scholarship

EMPORIA -- Mitchell DeWalt was announced the winner of the Emporia Entrepreneur Challenge on April 15, the first time the competition used a virtual format.

The Emporia Entrepreneur Challenge is a venture idea competition that is open to all students from Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College, with $4,500 in cash prizes: $2,500 for first, $1,500 for second, and $500 for third.

The competition started with a Meet &amp; Greet event on Jan. 28 to help students find partners for the competition. Three judges graded 42 executive summaries to arrive at the top 21 that would go on to the final round of competition - their oral pitches. Teams were judged on Business Model/Product, Feasibility, Justification, Specificity, and Originality.

Because of classes moving to online after spring break, the challenge took a virtual turn with the teams submitting their oral pitches electronically.

DeWalt, a junior business administration student from Overland Park, took first place and $2,500 for Overland Camping Equipment, the company he started three years ago.

"At OCE, we offer a variety of innovative camping supplies aimed to make your weekend getaway more enjoyable," says DeWalt. "For this challenge, I focused on one specific product called the Sleep Anywhere Bag. The Entrepreneurship Challenge allowed me to truly test my innovative abilities and challenge myself on bringing a product from an idea to reality. I appreciate the opportunity to not only compete but learn from the mentorship in the program."

Second place and $1,500 went to Aren Trost, a sophomore business administration student from McPherson, with Falls Craft Furniture, a company that offers custom welded furniture designs for the modern homeowner with the ability to make completely new custom pieces based on the needs and desires of the customer.

"The Entrepreneurial Challenge was such an exciting project to stir the imagination on what could be," said Trost. "It helped me get a better idea through research and learning of what my business is going to look like in the future."

He continues, "So many thank-yous go out to the individuals that were willing to share their knowledge of business with me in order to help me succeed. This has been a great opportunity to spark the fire of excitement for the future, and I have loved every second of it."

Students Hayden Schaeffer, senior management student from Thornton, Colorado, and Brigham Mooney, senior business administration student from Lees Summit, Missouri, took third place and $500 with Bioplastic Solutions, a single use biodegradable plastic product.

Said Schaeffer, "The entrepreneur challenge gave me the opportunity to apply my business education in a real-world situation, and I couldn't have had more fun doing it."

Normally, the top two finishers would have competed at the State Entrepreneur Challenge at Kansas State University on April 28. That competition was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Douglass Smith chaired the Entrepreneur Challenge committee. 

"We are incredibly grateful to have dedicated students that continued to participate during this unprecedented time," said Smith. "We are proud of these students and their commitment to finish what they started and encourage them to continue their entrepreneurial dreams!"

Judges for the first round of the competition (grading the executive summaries) included Dr. Marian Riedy, Dr. Michael Dennis, and Lisa Kirmer.

Judges for the second round of the competition (virtual oral pitches) included Kandace Wakeman, Jeanine McKenna, Lisa Brumbaugh, and Blaine Warkentine.

McPherson's Trost places at entrepreneur challenge

Grace E. Stewart Elementary School staff love and miss their students and those feelings are definitely reciprocated.

Friday evening, anxious students and their families waited outside their homes to catch a glimpse of their favorite Stewart staff members during the Stewart May Day Parade.

Fifty Stewart staff and their families decorated vehicles and drove the 17-mile parade route through the south Salina neighborhoods in which the school's students live. The event took two and a half hours, Erin McCorkle, assistant principal told Salina Post Friday evening.

"We miss seeing our kiddos and wanted to show them how much we care and love them. May Day parade seemed like a great time to do a parade," McCorkle said.

The parade was a hit with those who watched.

"This was amazing to see the excitement of the kiddos," parade watcher Savannah Munding told Salina Post.

Following guidance from the U.S. Department of Transportation United Express flights, operated by SkyWest Airlines, have been reduced to one flight per day effectively immediately. 

The reduction in service is a reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic that has resulted in a 95-percent drop in passengers across the nation, according to information provided by the Salina Airport Authority. The one daily United Express flight will connect Salina area travelers to United Airline’s Denver International Airport hub. SkyWest will operate a single flight per day service through June 30, 2020.

“The reduction in schedule at the Salina Airport is an appropriate response in light of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Salina Airport Authority executive director Tim Rogers. “Daily passenger numbers have dropped to single digits and are not expected to increase until Summer,” he added.

Here's the Friday COVID-19 update from Saline County:

The Saline County Health Department does not have any additional cases of COVID-19 to report today.

At this time, the Saline County Health Officer does not plan on adding additional restrictions above and beyond the recommendations set forth by the Governor. We will continue to monitor the situation closely. We will continue to support increased testing capabilities and robust contact tracing.

Business and Industry partners are directed to review the framework and strongly encouraged to follow industry standards. A mobile testing site will be in Salina on Friday, May 1st and Saturday May 2nd. This is a collaborative effort between eTrueNorth, Walmart, and State &amp; Local officials. To be tested individuals MUST:

• Salina Airport Authority released today that due to the COVID-19 pandemic they have reduced to one flight per day to Denver International Airport and have eliminated the flight to Chicago. SkyWest will operate a single flight per day through June 30th, 2020.

After careful consideration of the climate surrounding COVID-19, Kansas Wesleyan University has announced that it plans to open this fall as scheduled. 

On-campus classes for the semester will begin Aug. 18.

"We recognize the need to remain flexible and adaptable, and we plan to do so by continuing to work with state and local authorities to get the latest information throughout this process. Governor Kelly released her framework for re-opening Kansas after the Statewide Stay-at-Home order ends at midnight on May 3rd. Saline County is appreciative of all the efforts that went into the creation of this guidance.

MARION COUNTY --&nbsp;As of today, Marion County Park and Lake is now re-opened to both county and out of county residents for fishing, and other outdoor recreational use. 

According to information on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Marion-County-Park-and-Lake-119284188098476/">Marion County Park and Lake</a> Facebook page, camping will remain closed until Monday, with possible restrictions to follow. The public swimming beach, along with the lake hall venue will remain to be closed until further notice.

At this time, group gatherings of 10 or more people are still strictly prohibited, and we ask for your continued practice of proper social distancing, the information noted.

All permits, licenses, and boat/bait inspections are still required at the lake. The office is open seven days a week, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Personnel are currently handling all office business through the sliding glass drive-up window on the north side of the building.

"We ask for your patience and understanding while trying to re-open in phases following both local, and state orders," the information noted.

Up to $5,000 worth of cash and sports-related items are missing after a burglary early Thursday morning.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus reported this morning that sometime between 12:30-2:16 a.m. Thursday, someone entered The Arena, 427 South Broadway Boulevard, and took the following.

•An as-of-yet undetermined amount of cash

•Signed sports jerseys (Emmitt Smith, Jim Palmer, Mike Wallace, Ty Hilton, and Andre Hopkins) valued at $500 each

•A signed, unauthenticated Lou Gehrig MLB baseball valued at $30

The total value of the items stolen was estimated at between $3,000 and $5,000, Hanus noted.

Video surveillance shows a white male entering the business via a door, he explained. There was no sign of forced entry, Hanus added.

Officers are checking for other surveillance video from the area, Hanus, reported.

The 67401 mural began as a project for a group from the 2016 Leadership Salina class. The group contracted with local artist Julie Cates to design and install the mural, which is located on the north exterior wall of Ad Astra Coffee &amp; Books, 141 N. Santa Fe, amid a new plaza that was part of the city’s downtown streetscape project.

Chamber wants you to think 67401!

MANHATTAN — Fifteen Kansas State University sophomores and juniors in biology, microbiology, and fisheries, wildlife and conservation biology will receive the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/biology/" target="_blank">Division of Biology's</a>&nbsp;2019-2020 Most Promising Student Awards.

Faculty nominated students for the award. Grades, rigor of academic program, extracurricular activities and performance in an interview were factors used to determine the award winners. Division of Biology faculty sponsor the Most Promising Student Award and consider it to be one of the greatest honors bestowed on biology students at K-State. The winners are an accomplished group of students, representing the breadth of biology in their interests.

The following students are recipients of the 2020 Division of Biology Most Promising Student Award:

Reilly Jensen, junior in biology and Spanish,&nbsp;Buhler. Jensen is doing research with Thomas Platt, assistant professor of biology, on the evolution of pathogens and has co-authored a research article. Jensen is bilingual and he has lived abroad. He actively volunteers with underrepresented groups in STEM, including serving as a 4-H mentor. Jensen is interested in neurobiology and plans to pursue a career in research.

Kale Mills, junior in biology,&nbsp;Clearwater. Mills is a member of the University Honors Program. Mills is involved in Pre-Health Ambassadors and is currently president of the Pre-Medicine Club at K-State. He works with the Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters. He has pursued research at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita on parental perceptions of vaccinations, resulting in co-authorship on a publication. Mills plans to become a physician.

Adara Warner, sophomore in microbiology,&nbsp;Concordia. Warner works in the laboratory of Kathrin Schrick, associate professor of biology, characterizing plant transcription factors. She won an Outstanding Poster Award for her presentation of her research at the 2020 Kansas-IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence conference in Wichita. The vice president of the Microbiology Club, Warner plans to attend medical school and pursue a career as a pathologist.

Lake Winter, sophomore in microbiology,&nbsp;Concordia. Winter is a member of the University Honors Program and scholarship chair for Smith Scholarship House. Winter conducts research in the laboratory of Zhilong Yang, assistant professor of biology, characterizing regulation of the expression of certain vaccinia virus enzymes during the virus infection.

Abdulrahman Naeem, junior in biology,&nbsp;Manhattan. Naeem is currently conducting research in plant biology in the laboratory of Ruth Welti, university distinguished professor of biology. He previously participated in a research project in entomology. Naeem is a certified nursing assistant and volunteers with patient care. He is interested in a career in teaching and/or research, and is dedicated to the idea of improving the world through his work.

Elizabeth Riforgiate, sophomore in biology,&nbsp;Manhattan. Riforgiate works in the research lab of Nicholas Wallace, assistant professor of biology, where she studies cancer-related cell signaling. She is a co-author of a paper recently submitted for publication. She is a member of the University Honors Program and serves as treasurer of the Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity Club. She volunteers in the Ascension Via Christi Hospital emergency room, and she is currently is serving as a practicum student — instructional assistant — in introductory biology. Riforgiate is interested in a career in medicine.

Kourtney Rumback, sophomore in biology and psychology,&nbsp;Oakley. Rumback is a member of the University Honors Program and performs in the K-State Choir. She works as an emergency medical technician in Logan County and is also a certified nurse's aide. Rumback is involved in research in the laboratory of Kimberly Kirkpatrick, university distinguished professor of psychological sciences, where she is working on diet-induced impulsivity and another related study. Rumback is interested in a career in medicine and using research to improve medical treatment.

Victoria Gaa, sophomore in fisheries, wildlife and conservation biology,&nbsp;Overland Park. Gaa works for the Konza Prairie Long-term Ecological Research program at K-State as a lab and field assistant. She also works in the entomology department, photographing moth and butterfly specimens for the Lepidoptera database. In addition, Gaa finds time to volunteer at the Kansas City Zoo.

Tommy Herrera, junior in fisheries, wildlife and conservation biology,&nbsp;Shawnee. Herrera participates in evolutionary ecology research with Andrew Hope, assistant professor of biology. Herrera has gained considerable experience in the field and in the lab, where he conducts specimen preparation, preservation and curation. With a strong interest in mammalian conservation, he traveled to Thailand and Cambodia to work with rehabilitated Asian elephants, macaques, gibbons and waterfowl. Herrera is a member of the Developing Scholars Program and a McNair scholar. He plans to pursue graduate studies and a career in academia.

Emma Francis, junior in biology,&nbsp;Topeka. Francis currently works in the laboratory of Rollie Clem, professor of biology, where she is investigating the interactions between the Sindbus virus and its mosquito host. She is a certified peer educator with WellCAT Ambassadors. In this position, she educates K-State students by providing evidence-based health and wellness information. She also is a campus tour guide for New Student Services and is active in her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. Francis plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Cathryn Haas, junior in microbiology,&nbsp;Wamego. Haas currently serves as president of the Microbiology Club. In the Kirkpatrick laboratory, Haas conducts behavioral testing and is attempting to manipulate cells in the nervous system with viral vectors. In the Passarelli lab, Haas is determining the subcellular location of an enzymatic reaction that modifies viral proteins. Haas is considering a career in research.

Ryan Donnelly, sophomore in fisheries, wildlife and conservation biology,&nbsp;Los Angeles, California. Donnelly currently is working with Carolyn Ferguson, professor of biology, at the K-State Herbarium. He also has conducted research with David Haukos, adjunct associate professor of biology, and Alice Boyle, associate professor of biology. Donnelly is a member of the University Honors Program and is the organizer of Manhattan's City Nature Challenge for 2019 and 2020.

Elise Hesseltine, junior in biology,&nbsp;Orange Grove, Texas. Hesseltine worked on a research project involving red flour beetles with Alison Gerken at the USDA-ARS Center for Grain and Animal Health Research in Manhattan. She is an assistant in the College of Arts and Sciences' accounting office, vice president of the newly launched Biology Ambassadors group and a member of the University Honors Program. Hesseltine is on track to complete her biology degree, entomology minor and Honors Program requirements in three years and then enter the College of Veterinary Medicine, where she has been accepted through its early admission program.

Miriam Reynaldo, sophomore in fisheries, wildlife and conservation biology,&nbsp;Loyal, Wisconsin. Reynaldo is an avian ecological researcher, working with Alice Boyle, associate professor of biology. Reynaldo spent summer 2019 in the University of New Mexico's Research Experience for Undergraduates at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, working on Scott's orioles. She plans a career in scientific research.

Pranav Savanur, junior in biology,&nbsp;India. Savanur is passionate about health care accessibility. His mission is to transform health care access for women and children in underserved and impoverished areas. He is a member of WellCAT Ambassadors, educating K-State students about wellness. Savanur studied in South Africa in the summer after his freshman year and earned a Gilman Scholarship to study in Liverpool, United Kingdom, during his sophomore year. At K-State, he worked with RESULTS, advocating for bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress on global and domestic poverty-related issues, and heads the local RESULTS effort. Savanur plans to attend graduate school in public health before going to medical school, and also to continue supporting health improvements in communities near and far.

MANHATTAN – Some say, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” and the going is tough right now for millions of Americans from the economic fallout sparked by COVID-19. But even for the toughest among us, it’s not easy to pick up the pieces, especially after a job or business loss.

MANHATTAN – Some say, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” and the going is tough right now for millions of Americans from the economic fallout sparked by COVID-19. But even for the toughest among us, it’s not easy to pick up the pieces, especially after a job or business loss.“Many of the people who are now going to food pantries and seeking assistance have never had to rely on it before,” said Denise Dias, K-State Research and Extension agent in Johnson County.&nbsp;“It has been a shock to many of them to lose their income, almost overnight.”In her role as a family and consumer sciences extension agent, Dias works directly with individuals and families, providing financial management education. She said one gentleman she works with was turned down for unemployment recently because he had a part time job driving for Uber.&nbsp;With the stay-at-home order, his Uber job dried up and he could not appeal his unemployment decision.&nbsp;“He was desperate to find out any information to provide for his family and understand how he could get his stimulus check,” she said. “He had never been unemployed before in his life and was struggling to figure out a way to provide for his family.”&nbsp;Dias helped him determine the status of his stimulus check and shared information about local resources he and his family could tap into, plus potential sources of income and public assistance to help get them through the coming weeks.Sometimes it’s helpful to put pen to paper – or fingers to computer – and take steps to sharpen your survival skills, Kansas State University family resources experts say.“Remember the motto, ‘Use your resources so they do the most good,’” said Elizabeth Kiss, family resource management specialist with K-State Research and Extension. “Some resources will be used to buy goods and services you use or consume. Other resources may be invested in retraining, job searches, or other future needs.”Kiss collaborated with extension educators across the state to produce a fact sheet,&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3501.pdf" target="_blank">Sharpening Survival Skills</a>. The information is part of a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/family-finances/whenyourincomedrops.html" target="_blank">series of fact sheets</a>&nbsp;titled When Your Income Drops, focused on helping individuals and families through difficult financial times.Some steps include:•Plan how to use your resources. Identify what you need and separate needs from wants.•Substitute more costly goods and services for less costly where possible. Is walking an option rather than driving? Store brand versus name brand? Borrow or rent seldom-used equipment rather than buying. Substitute actions for gifts – lawn mowing for child care … or vice versa?•Find new uses for resources you already have.•Conserve resources through wise use. Consolidate trips – get the most use from each time you take a trip out in the car. Wait until you have a full load to do laundry.•Cooperate with others to stretch resources. Organize food, housing, or childcare cooperatives and carpools. Sell unwanted or unused items.•Take advantage of available community resources.
