MANHATTAN —&nbsp;More than 1,430 students completed degree requirements from Kansas State University in fall 2019. The graduates are from 89 Kansas counties, 42 states, and 30 countries.

The university awarded 1,213 bachelor's degrees, 244 master's degrees, 54 doctorates, and four associate degrees. Several students earned multiple degrees.&nbsp;

More than 200 students earned graduation honors for outstanding academic performance. Of those, 55 students graduated summa cum laude with a grade point average of 3.95 or above, 74 students graduated magna cum laude with a grade point average of 3.85 to 3.949, and 76 students graduated cum laude with a GPA of 3.75 to 3.849.

Fresh off an exciting week of concerts during Fusion!, the KWU Festival of Music, Kansas Wesleyan’s Department of Music will welcome groups of select high school students for a special event on Thursday.

 The groups will perform selections during a concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Sams Chapel. Admission is free, and the KWU Wind Ensemble will open the event with three pieces of its own.

“All students participating in the Feb. 13 event were nominated by their directors,” said Dr. Carl Rowles, KWU Director of Bands. “This event has shown tremendous growth in the number of students participating over the years, and we are excited about that development. We hope the community will come out to hear some great music, and to reward the hard work of these students.”

WICHITA – Patients fighting cancer need more blood than patients fighting any other disease, using nearly one-quarter of the nation’s blood supply. 

That’s why this February, the American&nbsp;Red&nbsp;Cross&nbsp;and the American Cancer Society have teamed up to encourage people across the country to&nbsp;<a href="http://americanredcrossbiomed.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d84%3c6%3f1-%3eLCE3%3a368%3e9-GLCE17.6&amp;RE=MO&amp;RI=2035608&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=314744&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">Give Blood to Give Time</a>, ensuring loved ones have the strength and support to battle cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 3 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. An estimated 16,170 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Kansas this year. Many of these people will likely have a need for blood.

“A loved one’s cancer diagnosis often makes families and friends feel helpless. That’s why theGive Blood to Give Timepartnership with the American Cancer Society is so important,” said Dr. Pampee Young, chief medical officer, AmericanRedCross. “When someone donates blood or platelets or makes a financial gift, they are helping to give patients and their families time, resources and the hope they need to fight back.”

Some types of chemotherapy can damage bone marrow, reducing red blood cell and platelet production. Other times, the cancer itself or surgical procedures cause the problem. Blood products are often needed. In fact, five units of blood are needed every minute to help someone going through cancer treatment. Yet only 3% of people in the United States give blood. More people are needed to donate regularly to help meet the need.

“The need for blood in cancer treatments is an important and untold story,” said Gary Reedy, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society. “The American Cancer Society is excited to be working with theRedCrosson Give Blood to Give Time. Through this partnership, we want people to know there are multiple ways they can help and make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families.”

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age&nbsp;in most states&nbsp;(16 with parental consent&nbsp;where allowed by state law, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

GSCF grant applications due Saturday

Salina Police are looking for a male suspect seen on surveillance video breaking into a YMCA locker and then stealing a Jeep from the parking lot on Tuesday afternoon.

The man was described as being a white male approximately 33 years of age, 5'-7", and weighing approximately 185 pounds, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The man had a large beard and was wearing a black beanie, a gray and purple sweatshirt with "Wildcats" on the front, blue jeans, and red shoes.

According to Forrester, the man was seen on surveillance video getting off a CityGo bus at the YMCA, 570 YMCA Drive, shortly after 3 p.m. He then was seen going directly to the locker room, Forrester said. A few minutes later, the man was seen going outside and getting into a black 2014 Jeep Wrangler belonging to Tyler Bouasanouvong, 24, of Salina, Forrester said.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., Bouasanouvong went into the locker room and found that his locker had been broken into and his backpack was on the floor, Forrester said. Bouasanouvong's wallet and keys, as well as $5 worth of quarters, and the Master Lock lock from the locker were gone, Forrester added. Bouasanouvong then went outside and discovered that his Jeep also was missing, Forrester said.

The Jeep, valued at $25,000, had a Kansas license plate of 373 LVA, Forrester said. The items stolen from the locker were valued at $200, he said.

Total snow accumulations of one to two inches with locally higher amounts, mainly during the morning, is expected. Snow should mix with rain during the afternoon.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous  conditions could impact both the morning and evening commute.

Additionally, NWS in Wichita has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until midnight tonight for the following counties in our area.

Wet snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches. Possible flash freeze this evening and tonight, with strong and gusty north winds this evening and tonight.

Plan on slippery road conditions especially on   untreated surfaces. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. There will be a refreeze on wet and slushy roads this evening and tonight, possibly impacting the Thursday morning commute.

It’s tough to make a difference in this world, and it’s impossible to do so and remain comfortable. As American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) President Zippy Duvall is fond of repeating the advice his father gave him: Making a difference requires you to get outside your fencerows.

No matter what difference you want to make, leaving your fencerow in the rearview mirror likely will have a bigger effect on you than anything else.

Mark Twain said it best in “Innocents Abroad” when he wrote, “Travel&nbsp;is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

I’ve been fortunate in my life to have had the opportunity to travel fairly frequently. Though one of my biggest regrets is quitting Spanish class after two years in high school. I’ve been to four countries where it’s the dominant language, yet I’m speechless after saying my name and a few pleasantries.

And while I’ve had some slight mishaps on a few journeys, including my recent jaunt to the AFBF Annual Convention in Austin, upon arrival, I’ve never had an unpleasant experience. I’ve been tired, lost and uncomfortable in my surroundings. I also survived and become a better person for it.

Travel also forges connections with those who are most like you. Now safely back on Kansas soil, I keep returning to two conversations with fellow Kansans in Austin.

“The toughest part is getting past the mailbox,” one said of the difficulty of getting away from his farm.

The other topic is true of both travel and growing older, generally. “I was surer of more things when I was younger,” another said. I agree. I used to have an answer for everything, and now it seems most of my sentences start with, “It depends …” or end with “that’s just my advice.”

That reminded me of Anthony Bourdain, chef and author turned professional vagabond, who said, “It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.”

One thing I’m still certain of is getting outside your fencerow is difficult. There’s always one more thing that needs done or some other excuse not to leave. But the thing is you don’t have to go far – just a little beyond the mailbox to see something you haven’t seen before; experience something new; feel the uneasiness in your gut from venturing outside your comfort zone.

It means stepping up, speaking out and, quite possibly, becoming the center of attention, if only momentarily. It means experiencing new thoughts, new people and new places. Simply put, it means seeing, doing, traveling – growing.

That’s the real reason getting outside your fencerows is so incredibly valuable – it allows you to grow. Getting away makes you vulnerable. It makes you reliant on other. It makes you consider just how big the world is and just how small you are.

And yet everyday small, ordinary people leave their fencerows behind and change the world.

Insight: Outside the fencerow

The deadline for Salina Presbyterian Manor's Art is Ageless® juried exhibit is rapidly approaching.

The exhibit is scheduled for March 3-4 at Presbyterian Manor, 2601 East Crawford Street.&nbsp;Works to be entered for judging need to be at Presbyterian Manor by Feb. 20.

Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 40th&nbsp;anniversary Art is Ageless calendar in 2021.

Artists may choose to enter the exhibit only. For the competition, works are to have been completed in the past five years (since January 2015). There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional.&nbsp;

The Art is Ageless® program encourages Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.

Local competition winners will join winners from 15 other Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America communities to be judged at the system-wide level.

The deadline for Salina Presbyterian Manor's Art is Ageless® juried exhibit is rapidly approaching.The exhibit is scheduled for March 3-4 at Presbyterian Manor, 2601 East Crawford Street.&nbsp;Works to be entered for judging need to be at Presbyterian Manor by Feb. 20.Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 40th&nbsp;anniversary Art is Ageless calendar in 2021.Artists may choose to enter the exhibit only. For the competition, works are to have been completed in the past five years (since January 2015). Deadline near for Art is Ageless entries

MANHATTAN – Cattle producers who have not yet started the spring calving season still have time to plan ahead, and a Kansas State University veterinarian notes that could make a big difference in having a successful year.

“This is the time for a pre-emptive strike,” said A.J. Tarpoff, a beef veterinarian with K-State Research and Extension. “If you haven’t started calving yet on your operation, now is the time to start thinking about what you can do to be ready.”

Tarpoff noted that producers need to make sure they have the necessary supplies on hand, which may require buying or repairing items and facilities. Then, he adds, set in motion a plan to manage the birth of the new calves.

“Calving books are a phenomenal tool,” Tarpoff said. “It could be just a little pocketbook where you write down who calved, when they calved, if there was difficulty, and whether it was a male or female coming out. There is a lot of information that we can capture about the birthing process so that we’re able to make better decisions within our herd in the future.”

One of the newer management techniques that can lead to successful calving is to feed cows at dusk. “There have been several research studies that show reliable results that a higher percentage of animals are born during daylight hours when we feed the cow in the late evening hours,” Tarpoff said.

Feeding late in the evening, he said, will help decrease midnight or early morning births, which are hard on workers and can make the birth more complicated if there are difficulties.

Tarpoff hosted a series of calving schools across Kansas over the last several weeks to help the state’s producers be adequately prepared to bring in as many healthy animals as possible. The final session for this season was video-streamed on Facebook Live. A recording of that session can be seen on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/KStateRE/videos/746744109146536/?t=0" target="_blank">K-State Research and Extension Facebook page</a>.

One of his recommendations is that producers use a cooler to store tools and equipment: “On cold days and nights, the cooler will help equipment to stay nice and warm. We can close it up and know that our equipment is not going to freeze,” he said.

Tarpoff said producers should check calving chains or obstetric straps for rust, sharp spots or fraying. He also suggests having multiple sets on hand in case there are multiple births at once. The straps should be cleaned, disinfected and hung to dry after each use.

“Once those straps are dried, put them in a closed container so that you don’t re-contaminate them by accident,” he said. “Then, throw them back into your cooler kit.”

Producers should have a meeting with their local veterinarian to discuss situations that may occur, and what medicine or other supplies may be needed to handle those. “They can prescribe the products you’ll need and set you up to be a little more prepared,” Tarpoff said.

How to handle a difficult calving situation

Tarpoff shares the following steps for producers to follow if they experience a difficult calving situation:

During active calving. Once the cow’s water bag breaks, assure that they are making adequate progress toward birth within an hour. Adequate progress means the calf is moving through the birth canal. If there seems to be no progress, it is time to intervene.

How long should I intervene?&nbsp;“First, figure out what is causing the problem,” Tarpoff said. “Usually the calf is not coming through the birth canal quite right.” He said producers should try to intervene for a half hour, gently manipulating the calf’s head, legs or other parts through the birth canal.

Call for help.&nbsp;If problems persist beyond a half hour, call a veterinarian for help. “That’s your best chance to get a live calf on the ground,” Tarpoff said.

“Don’t hesitate to seek assistance when it’s obvious you need it,” Tarpoff said. “For a lot of locations in Kansas, the veterinarian may not be five minutes away. They may be an hour away or they may be on another call. If you communicate with them that you’re having an issue, you’re trying to solve it but it’s not going well, at least it gets it on their radar that they can get to your operation as soon as possible.”

Saline County Commissioners approved a variety of items during their meeting Tuesday morning. 

Commissioners approved entering into a service agreement with Affordable Language Services to provide language translation services to clients and families that visit the Health Department, according to information provided by the county. The service will assist those clients whose primary language is not English and for those with hearing impairments. The service is billed on a per minute basis and on the language needed for translation.

The purchase will be made through the utilization of a cooperative purchasing contract through an authorized company, Sourcewell, which works closely with governmental agencies, the county noted. Andrew Pellant, pre-trial coordinator, provided commissioners with an update for January 2020. Pellant told commissioners the following.There were 15 clients placed on pre-trial in the month of January 2020.As of Jan. 31, a total of 97 clients were being supervised, 22 clients remained in custody, and 146 clients had had their charges dismissed or had been sentenced, and 80 clients had their pre-trial bond revoked.Of the 80 clients who had their pre-trial bond revoked, nine were because of new alleged charges and 71 were due to failing to appear in court.There have been a total of 345 clients placed on pre-trial since the program inception in April 2019.According to the county information, other commission business includes the following.Commissioners proclaimed February Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.Commissioners approved a request to submit for consideration, two grant projects through the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Grant. One is a DrugIQ class that will target participants from law enforcement and fire fighting agencies, during which they will learn tactics concerning responding to incidents involving synthetic opioids. The second project would send hazardous materials technicians to a national hazmat conference.
