A Salina woman was transported to a Wichita hospital after a head-on collision on East Crawford Saturday night.

Cassandra Daniels was westbound in an eastbound lane of East Crawford near the South Fifth Street intersection in a 2006 Honda Accord when she struck head on a 1997 Dodge Ram 3500 crew cab pickup driven by Robert Flax, 70, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The accident occurred at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, he noted.

According to Forrester, witnesses told police that Daniels was westbound and had swerved into oncoming traffic several times, Forrester explained. Additionally, Daniels did not have the Accord's headlights on, witnesses said.

A vehicle in the outside eastbound lane prevented Flax from swerving to avoid the crash, Forrester noted.

Daniels was first transport to Salina Regional Health Center and then to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, he reported. Flax was not injured, he added.

Both vehicles had disabling front-end damage and were towed from the scene, Forrester noted.

Police are looking for a suspect seen on video surveillance in connection with a delivery truck stolen from a local beer distributor early Saturday.

An employee of Pestinger Distributing, 1825 Bailey Drive, told police that a red 2014 Peterbilt tractor and 1998 Hess trailer that was fully loaded for Monday deliveries was missing, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. 

According to Forrester, video surveillance showed a white male with thin build wearing black shorts, a black short sleeve shirt, a mask, and gloves loading  several items onto the tractor-trailer rig and then driving it out of the garage. Additionally, surveillance video showed a white pickup just outside the garage door. The incident occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. Saturday, he noted.

Total loss between the tractor-trailer rig and contents was estimated at more than $100,000, Forrester reported.

Later Saturday morning, officers were sent to the 3200 block of Foxboro, where a Pestinger Distributing employee had located the missing tractor-trailer rig. Forrester noted that the employee had been driving northbound on Centennial Road and observed the tractor-trailer rig.

Area video surveillance shows the tractor-trailer rig pull up around 9 a.m. and the same male subject exit, Forrester reported. Approximately five minutes later, the same white pickup, identified as a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, pulled up with an enclosed trailer attached. Police investigating theft of beer distributor delivery truck

Last night's high winds are believed to have contributed to a rollover on Interstate 70 (I-70) Sunday night.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that first responders where sent to I-70 at 10:34 p.m. Sunday for the report of a rollover accident near milepost 253 in Saline County. 

Lorenzo Drbeagley, 26, of Bluffdale, Utah, was westbound in a blue 2017 Dodge Ram pulling a 20-foot enclosed utility trailer when he attempted to pass a tractor-trailer rig, Soldan said. It is believed that high winds at that time caused Drbeagley to lose control of the pickup, which exited the roadway and rolled onto the driver's side, Soldan explained.

A passenger in the pickup, Mary Nielsen, 18, also of Bluffdale, Utah, received a cut to the forehead and was treated at the scene, he said.

High winds may have contributed to rollover accident on I-70

After a windy overnight, much of the area is expected to see much calmer, sunny weather.

A front that moved through overnight brought with it strong, blustery winds, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue high wind warnings for much of the state.&nbsp;

Today, we'll see sunny skies and cooler temperatures that we've experienced the last few days, according to NWS. High are expected to be in the mid-70s. However, we wil see another warmup, with temperatures reaching as high as the upper 80s by Wednesday, NWS noted.

MANHATTAN – Even during a global pandemic, swine experts at Kansas State University are committed to making research a cornerstone of their program.&nbsp;

This year’s annual K-State Swine Day – scheduled Nov. 18-19 – will be held online only but they’re promising a program chock-full of research presentations just like year’s past.&nbsp;

“Due to increasing concerns around the evolving Covid-19 situation and standing by our commitment to the safety of our participants, volunteers and partners as our top priority, we’ve made the decision to transition this year’s Swine Day to an online format,” said Mike Tokach, University Distinguished Professor and swine specialist with K-State Research and Extension.&nbsp;

Registration is&nbsp;<a href="http://bit.ly/2020SwineDay" target="_blank">now available at KSUSwine.org</a>&nbsp;and is free through Nov. 11. More information also is available&nbsp;<a href="http://www.asi.k-state.edu/events/swine-day" target="_blank">online from the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.</a>&nbsp;

The cases were likewise confirmed by a report on ProMED (a programme of the International Society for Infectious Diseases) that day. Pneumonia is a symptom with many causes, from influenza to bacteria to other causes, but here the cause was unknown.

Also at the end of Dec. of 2019, Dr. Li Wenliang, age 34, an ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central Hospital, suspected these cases resembled the 2003 SARS outbreak. He tried to alert fellow medical workers. Three days later, the police visited and told him to stop what they considered “crying wolf.”&nbsp; He returned to work and caught the virus from a patient. He died three weeks later and is considered a national hero in China today.

Chinese health authorities and WHO announced the discovery of a novel coronavirus on Jan. 9, 2020 and confirmed it as the agent responsible for the pneumonia cases.

By the weekend of Jan. 11-12, Chinese researchers released the full genome sequence of the coronavirus, based on samples from the first patients. This research done in record time allowed accurate diagnostic tests to be developed as well as guidance on treatment options and potential vaccines.

By Friday, Jan. 24, the virus was detected in France in patients arriving from Wuhan, China.

By Jan. 29, the Institut Pasteur sequenced the genome of the coronavirus on behalf of WHO. Additional genome sequencing has revealed that the coronavirus has one or two small mutations each month as it spreads through different populations. Our New York pandemic would be traced back to visitors from Europe. &nbsp;

Viruses are named by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses and on Feb. 11, ICTV announced its name was “severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), chosen because the virus is genetically related to the 2003 SARS coronavirus—related but different.

The same day, WHO announced “COVID-19” as the name for the new disease, based on guidelines&nbsp; developed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).&nbsp; The disease name COVID-19 (COronaVIrusDisease-2019)&nbsp; shows it was discovered in 2019.

Serious coronaviruses such as SARS and MERS originate in bats and transfer through other animals to humans. It was therefore thought the origin of this new virus came from the Huanan Seafood market where wild animals were sold. That market was disinfected. In January, it was assumed that only those persons who came in contact with sick and infected animals and people could catch the virus.&nbsp; It was also assumed that people without symptoms were healthy and you were contagious only when you were sick.

Due to perceived incompetence by city and provincial officials, by Feb. 14, Ying Yong, the mayor of Shanghai replaced Hubei party chief Jiang Chaoliang, and the head of Jinan, capital of Shangdong province replaced Wuhan party chief Ma Guoqiang. Lesson: don’t ignore science!&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Realizing the severity of COVID-19, China imposed severe internal travel restrictions on Jan. 20. Critics realize that there was not enough evidence before Jan. 14 to have begun such a shutdown. Therefore this six days is the basis for any accusation that China did not act fast enough to quarantine. It is a position held by political folks looking for a scapegoat. But not by the scientist community.

So far, there have been more than 35,000 scientific research papers published or in pre-print dealing with this pandemic. During the months of February, March and April, nearly all of these papers were by Chinese researchers and they still dominate the citations due to their early work. After April, the research switches to Europe and the U.S. because there are too few cases in China today (all imported) but the pandemic continues surging in the West.

By far the most alarming discovery was that individuals could be completely healthy (asymptomatic) and still be infectious, usually on day three or four after having become infected. This allowed much transmission by world travelers who never ran a fever or showed other symptoms. As soon as this highly unusual situation was realized, it became apparent that the infection could have been circulating, away from any meat market. And as its aerosol spread has become more recognized, it is now obvious that, similar to influenza, you could never have kept this epidemic from spreading worldwide.

Because China faced the first cases, they are also ahead in vaccine development. Three of their four major vaccines are “attenuated” or weakened coronaviruses. Their CoronaVac was the first to go to Phase 3 field research in Brazil, two weeks before our “warp drive” vaccines reached that stage and one week before the Oxford vaccine. And while China has made arrangements with Brazil and other test nations to provide them a successful vaccine if it works, China has also joined the Covax system to distribute their vaccine worldwide. (America has not.)

Because as long as COVID-19 exists anywhere, no one remains safe.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A blue ribbon. For millions of 4-H youth through the years, blue ribbons have been awarded in recognition of a high-quality project. &nbsp;

For Joni Albers, the founder of the Hungry Gardens in California, her first blue ribbon helped launch a lifelong interest in horticulture. She is now using those skills to produce healthy food for urban neighbors. &nbsp;

Originally from Hoxie, Joni’s roots go deep in rural Kansas. Her grandparents were dairy farmers, and her family always had a large garden. “My mother got me started in gardening,” Joni said. “I had my first garden at six years old.”&nbsp;

She was also a member of the Solomon Valley 4-H Club. In her first year, she took her homegrown green beans to the Sheridan County Fair and won a blue ribbon. “That started it all,” she said. Joni was active in 4-H, taking on projects such as sewing, art, bucket calf, and woodworking, but horticulture was her favorite.&nbsp;

Joni went to college in Denver and worked as a designer before taking a technology position in New York City. When her company allowed her to transfer to California, Joni settled in Sun Valley.&nbsp;

Unlike in New York City, she now had some land. “I wanted to garden as I had in my youth,” Joni said. She started a small garden, but the garden space quickly grew. Soon she had about 4,000 square feet, and her neighbors were interested in her produce. &nbsp;

Locally grown products were hard to come by in the region. “There was one produce stand in the area, but it was only open one day a week, and they didn’t have locally grown produce,” Joni said.&nbsp;

She decided to launch her own business as an urban produce farm. She named it the Hungry Gardens. She uses innovative technology to communicate with customers and focuses on heirloom produce.&nbsp;

These are not plain, everyday tomatoes, for example. “Healthy food and culinary experiences underpin everything we grow at the Hungry Gardens,” her website says.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I try to find the rarest heirloom vegetables,” Joni said. “We specialize in growing unique vegetables that are not available commercially but have historical and indigenous value.”&nbsp;

For example, Joni offers many products which I hadn’t heard of, such as cinnamon basil, blacktail watermelons, red noodle beans, tigger melons, violet sparkle peppers, thai lime, pineapple sage, cucamelons, and many more. She works with various partners, including several chefs.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I want to provide an experience for people, and give them new things to try,” Joni said.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her market is hyperlocal, and she offers pickup and delivery. Hungry Gardens also offers seedlings for such items as heirloom tomatoes, squash, zucchini and flowers.&nbsp;

Some cities have used community-supported agriculture, where consumers pay a fee and receive whatever produce happens to be in season. Joni goes a step further by enabling consumers to select their products. “I allow consumers to curate their own boxes,” Joni said. “That means they get what they really want.” &nbsp;

She updates the inventory of fresh products each day, and her customers get to choose among the freshest items.&nbsp;

Joni uses an iPhone app called Cropswap, to offer Heirloom CropBoxes by subscription. These include a variety of heirloom vegetables not offered on her website. The boxes come with scannable codes that connect to recipes from area chefs, plus ideas for preparation of these unusual products.&nbsp;

It’s a remarkable business, inspired by Joni’s early days as a 4-H’er at the rural community of Hoxie, population 1,201 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Now That’s Rural: Joni Albers, Hungry Gardens

Two proclamation requests and three resolutions are on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

The commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Monday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street. A time for public comment is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting.

Among the agenda items are the following two proclamation requests.

●Proclaim the month of October 2020 as “Bullying Prevention Month” in the City of Salina. Dominic  Freeland,  Gabriel  Freeland,  Andrew  Graber,  Camille  Graber, Keira Hoffman, and Sofia Torres are scheduled to read the proclamation.

●Proclaim the month of October 2020 as “Domestic  Violence  Awareness  Month” in the City  of  Salina. Abby  Hunter,  victim  advocate with  DVACK  is scheduled to read  the proclamation.

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider approving the following resolutions.

●Resolution  No.  20-7887 authorizing  the  mayor  to  sign  an  agreement to  lengthen  the  tolling  period  in  the  consent  decree,  which  relates  to  the former Schilling Air Force Base site.

●Resolution  No.  20-7879  authorizing  the  mayor  to  execute  an amended  and restated Sidewalk Café License Agreement with PB &amp; J Restaurants, Inc.

4-Hers across the country celebrated National 4-H Week this past week. One local 4-H club took a multi-event approach to the celebration.

Members of the Smoky View 4-H Club created a video showcasing their favorite part of 4-H or what they have gained from being in the program, Eian Pracht, Smoky View reporter, noted in information provided to Salina Post. Like many of their counterparts throughout the United States, the members of the Smoky View 4-H Club participated in the 48 Hours of 4-H community service program this weekend. For their project, the Smoky View 4-H Club members created cards for residents of Bethany Home in Lindsborg and then worked with Bethany Home staff to safely deliver the cards to residents.

According to the National 4-H Council, there are more than 6.5 million 4-H members -- ages five to 19 -- across the country, touching every county and parish in the United States through land-grant universities and local extension offices. 

In Kansas, more than 70,000 youth participate in 4-H programs each year. The Kansas 4-H office also reports that more than 6,000 adults volunteer time to teach life skills and serve as mentors.

Is it COVID-19 or allergies? Here are some need-to-knows

Mike Hartung’s paintings are not for the fragile. In that way, they’re just like Kansas.

He’s also a classic character, the kind that could only emerge from a flinty place like this.

Now 76, Hartung grew up in Fredonia and worked as a commercial printer in downtown Lindsborg for 45 years. At night, he’d go upstairs to a studio where he quietly created more than 700 paintings, many of them on 4-by-8-foot sheets of Masonite. He might have lived out his years in obscurity if not for his old friend Laura Klocke and her husband, Richard Klocke, then the exhibitions manager at Lawrence’s Spencer Museum, who learned he was in poor health and living in dubious conditions. They intervened and began working to bring him some attention.

Hartung’s first exhibition was three years ago, with simultaneous shows at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salinaartcenter.org/mikehartung">Salina Art Center</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="http://sandzen.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Mike-Hartung-FLYER.pdf">Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery</a>&nbsp;in Lindsborg and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/art-and-design/moss-thorns/index">Moss-Thorns Gallery</a>&nbsp;at Fort Hays State University.

“His paintings of gas stations and laundromats possess the existential angst of Edward Hopper’s iconic works from the 1930s and ’40s,” the critic Elizabeth Kirsch&nbsp;<a href="http://kcstudio.org/little-help-friends-mike-hartung/">wrote in KC Studio</a>, “while works that deal with the seasons and nature are delicate, romantic, even surreal.”

“It’s an incredibly important body of work,” says Bill North, who spent 17 years as the senior curator of the&nbsp;<a href="https://beach.k-state.edu/">Beach Museum</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University and then seven years as the executive director at the Salina Art Center before he left last year.

North sums up Hartung’s work as “a scathing critique of American exceptionalism.”

“He’s going to places where most people don’t care to go,” North says. “You know, Kansans like pretty pictures. And Mike’s pictures are not pretty, but they’re so powerful.”

Which brings us to “The Golden Turd.”

Hartung says he was essentially paralyzed by COVID-19 — not the actual disease, but the overpowering emotions many of us felt as the pandemic hit back in March.

“I couldn’t accept it,” he says. “Just the idea of what normal people were going through deeply affected me. I couldn’t believe how the health profession was treated like they were expendable — these people had gone to school for a long time to take care of us, and we threw them out there without protection and fumbled around, called it a hoax.”

“I guess maybe I’m not totally opposed to dystopic visions of whatever,” he says, “but that was more than I wanted to deal with.”

“I was lying in bed one night and thought, ‘Well shit, I’ve got three weeks. Why don’t I see what I can come up with,'” he said. “I’d had this idea before COVID, in the back of my mind.”

Hartung sometimes makes up stories to go with his paintings, deploying these bizarre, lurid and darkly comic narratives as part of the work’s texture.

The show opened at Dala Town, a retail space on Main Street, on Sept. 18. It was up throughout that weekend, but on Monday, he learned some folks were not pleased with “The Golden Turd” and another painting that included an unpleasant rendering of the former president of Lindsborg’s Bethany College.

The show came down. Lest anyone think Lindsborg is intolerant, it reopened this past weekend at a place called the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.redbarnstudio.org/">Red Barn Studio Museum</a>. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/SmokyValleyArtsandFolklifeCenter/">Smoky Valley Arts &amp; Folklife Center</a>, which had been promoting the show, posted a note on Facebook making it clear that “the artist’s depictions do not express the views or opinions” of the various sponsoring organizations or venues, but “we believe that freedom of artistic expression is an essential part of our mission.”

Despite his depiction of the president, Hartung volunteers that he’d describe himself as “a progressive Republican like we had with people like&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_B._Pearson">Jim Pearson</a>” (the state’s Republican U.S. Senator from 1962-1978).

“Even Nancy Landon Kassebaum was pretty reasonable,” he says. “I sure as hell wasn’t ashamed of her. Now these clowns we’ve got are pathetic. It’s all Trump all the time.”

Hartung says he hasn’t experienced any negative repercussions from his work. He credits North for “showing a lot of courage” by including his piece “Tailgating with the GOP” in the Salina Art Center’s 2017 show. Hartung describes it as depicting “a handmaid delivering children whose heads are being chopped off, going onto a grill to become chicken wings, with three little piggies sitting on park bench as the 1%.”

“It’s a very tough, tough painting,” says North, who hung it in a back room and posted a sign alerting viewers so there was no chance of anyone “stumbling onto it.” At the opening, he says, he stood next to a woman he guesses was in her 70s, and probably a Republican.

“She turned to me and basically thanked the Art Center for showing it,” North says.
