Gridiron Glory: Don't forget to make your picks for Week 6

I know how hard it is to succeed financially when you’re barely getting by and living paycheck to paycheck. I’ve been there. The truth is, there will always be factors that are out of your control. But it&nbsp;is&nbsp;possible to take control of your finances and change your life—even if it seems like the odds are stacked against you.

Here are four ways to break the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck so you can start winning with money:

Good money habits start in your mind. Right now, you’re probably in survival mode. But I want you to go from surviving to thriving. Make the decision that you won’t be a victim to your circumstances, and that you’ll do whatever it takes to handle money the right way. Start having a winning mindset!

I don’t know all the details of your current situation. But I do know if money is tight, and you’re already doing everything you can to live on less than you make, you need to earn more money. That’s just the simple, basic truth. This could mean applying for a higher-paying job, or picking up a side hustle or part-time job on weekends or at night. I understand it can be really hard to take on more work, but I promise your sacrifice will pay off.

If you have any debt right now, you need to know that debt is stopping you from breaking free of the paycheck-to-paycheck life and reaching your financial goals. Just think about what you could do with the money you normally spend on those monthly payments. That’s why I want you to get out of debt as fast as possible, and never look back.

First, save up a $1,000 starter emergency fund so you can have a buffer while you’re paying off debt. You can do this by going through all your stuff and figuring out what you can sell, working some overtime, or finding ways to cut back on expenses until you have $1,000 stashed in a separate bank account. Then, it’s time to attack your debt using the debt snowball.

Do this by listing out all your debts from smallest to largest (no matter what their interest rates are). Tackle the smallest debt first with the extra money you’re bringing in until it’s completely paid off. Then, take the money that used to go toward that debt and roll it into paying off the next largest debt. Rinse and repeat until all your debt is gone!

Build a fully funded emergency fund

After you’re completely debt-free, the next step is to build a fully funded emergency fund with the money that used to go toward all your debt. This fund should have enough money to cover 3 to 6 months of expenses (housing, food, etc.). That way, an emergency becomes more of an inconvenience than a big disaster. You can rest easy knowing you’re prepared for the future.

Once you’ve finished these steps, you’ve officially broken the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck and you’re free to start building serious wealth! Stick with it and don’t give up. $538,871 Super Kansas Cash jackpot hit in north-central Kansas

CLAY CENTER --Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) has partnered with Tru-D SmartUVC to raise the bar when it comes to the level of disinfection at CCMC. 

Tru-D is a portable UVC disinfection system that is rolled into a room, and then is operated by a user-friendly remote control from outside the room. The robot analyzes the room with sensors and dispenses a measured dose of UVC energy to disinfect and ensure a safe environment for patient care.

The system can disinfect an entire room from one location, eliminating the need to move it to multiple places within the room. Tru-D spends whatever time is necessary to confidently eliminate infectious germs from contaminated surfaces before shutting down and notifying CCMC that disinfection is complete.

The Wichita-based architecture, construction and facility services firm has four offices in Kansas. Hutton acquired Busboom &amp; Rauh Construction in 2019, which bolstered Hutton’s commercial, industrial, healthcare and cold storage/food manufacturing roster. The new office is one of several Salina-area projects for Hutton, including Homewood Suites by Hilton, the KU School of Medicine Health Education Center, Salina Regional Health Center and renovations to the Stiefel Theater.

“We took the same approach in designing our Salina office as our other Hutton offices,” explained Hutton architect Emily Taylor. “The layout is collaborative – no hierarchy. There will be multiple meeting rooms, including large conference and training rooms we will make available to the Salina community when it’s safe to do so. Perhaps the best part is we’re reopening the former skylight at the center of the building to bring sunlight to every workstation.”

Hutton is hosting an event today at 2:30 p.m. in partnership with the Salina Chamber of Commerce to “break ground” on the remodel project.

Of the 321 confirmed cases, 291 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines.

There are 24 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County to report since the last update on Monday, October 12. The total for the county is now 929, with 105 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department, 812 that have recovered, and a total of 12 deaths. Salina Regional Health Center reporting that they have 9 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Salina Regional is a regional hospital, the COVID-19 patient total is not specific to the number of Saline County residents who may be hospitalized. Our virtual dashboard was unable to be updated today due to the annual flu clinic.

The annual community flu clinic is occurring today, October 14th until 6 pm. This is a drive-thru clinic only at the 4-H Building located at 900 Greeley Ave.

According to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, there are now 69,155 cases and 838 deaths statewide. This information can be found at <a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/">https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/</a>.

Gridiron Glory: Congrats Tonya Gipe!

Two new female scimitar-horned oryx
arrived at Rolling Hills Zoo Tuesday afternoon.

Their arrival is part of the Scimitar-horned Oryx
Species Survival Plan (SSP) of the Association of Zoos &amp; Aquariums (AZA),
of which Rolling Hills Zoo is an accredited member. &nbsp;

Born in March 2019 and raised at the
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center near Glen Rose Texas, these young, un-named, oryx came
to Rolling Hills Zoo on a breeding recommendation by the SSP.&nbsp; They will be on exhibit at the Zoo, while the
Zoo’s current male, Nas, moves to the pasture.&nbsp;


The Zoo’s other male oryx, Tootles, is
being transferred to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center where he will breed with the
female oryx who live there.&nbsp; 

“We have always held surplus males or
older non-breeding pairs at Rolling Hills Zoo, so these females will be the
first of four breeding females to join the herd,” shared Brenda Gunder, Rolling
Hills Zoo Curator. “With only 214 animals in the SSP oryx population, we are
one of only 18 AZA facilities to hold this endangered species and the only zoo
in Kansas.”

A century ago, hundreds of thousands of these
desert-adapted antelopes were known to span across the arid ecosystems of
Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad and
Sudan. But due to human encroachment, unregulated hunting, prolonged drought
and loss of food because of excessive livestock grazing, the population numbers
began to rapidly decline. The known last photo of oryx taken in the wild was in
Niger in 1980.&nbsp; While unconfirmed reports
stated that a few wild oryx remained in the wilderness of Chad in 1996, no
definite evidence of any survival was ever obtained.&nbsp; So in 2000 the scimitar-horned oryx was declared
extinct in the wild. 

Rolling Hills Zoo has been a supporter
of the Sahara Conservation Fund which supports a scimitar-horned oryx reintroduction
program in Chad.&nbsp; The reintroduction
program began in 2016 as a joint initiative of the Government of Chad and the
Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. &nbsp;The goal
of the reintroduction program is to build up a viable, free-ranging and
self-sustaining population of at least 500 animals. To date, more than 150
captive-bred scimitar-horned oryx have been returned to the wild in Chad’s
Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Game Reserve. If it were not for private collections and
zoos, like Rolling Hills Zoo, the scimitar-horned oryx would have completely
disappeared.

Salina police are investigating the theft of an enclosed trailer that they believe is connected to the Pestinger Distribution burglary.

A 2000 ATLS enclosed trailer with Coors logos on both sides was stolen from Crown Distribution, 606 North Ohio Street at approximately 6:20 p.m. on Friday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The trailer was valued at $12,500, he added.

According to Forrester, surveillance video shows a white Chevrolet Z71 pickup pull onto the lot. A male subject wearing a dark hat, plain white t-shirt, dark athletic shorts, tall dark socks, and dark shoes got out of the pickup and hooked onto the trailer, leaving the parking lot with it, Forrester noted.

He explained that police are investigating the trailer theft as being related to the Pestinger Distribution burglary, as same vehicle and trailer were used in that case.

Abilene Police Department seeks help in IDing man

After a few days of blaming our service provider for a shaky internet connection, I recently discovered the real problem was the decade-old Wi-Fi router when it quit transmitting signal in the middle of a workday. I uttered a few choice words as I pulled out my phone and checked a local store for a viable replacement. I decided to go ahead and replace the modem as well since it predated the router. I found a decently priced combo, drove across town and back, then said a few more words while getting the whole thing set up. All told, it took just under an hour to complete. It was a minor inconvenience, and I had access to several workarounds if I wasn’t able to buy a new router immediately. I could have taken the old-fashioned route of connecting a computer directly to the modem like our caveman ancestors did. I also could have used my phone as a hotspot. In any event, the mild annoyance I encountered pales in comparison to the struggle of thousands of Kansans who lack any connectivity options at all. The pandemic has put a spotlight on just how important fast, reliable internet is for the state to prosper. Education, health care, business, entertainment and work are all possible uses in connected households. Kansas will spend $50 million in CARES Act funding to hook up an estimated 70,000 households to broadband, defined as download speeds of 25 megabits per second and upload speeds of 3 megabits per second. It’s a step in the right direction, but the 67 projects across the state will only scratch the surface of connecting every home, business, school and health facility to modern technology. The hard part in any network is always making the last-mile delivery. In cities where density means a mile of fiberoptic cable can give a company access to tens of thousands of potential customers or a wireless transceiver can cover multiple blocks, private companies will readily invest. But on the outskirts of town where there are fewer people and greater distances, the potential profit goes down. It evaporates entirely when you start looking at farms and ranches across Kansas that are miles apart. There’s a reason only 4 percent of urban Americans lack access to broadband while nearly 40 percent of their rural counterparts are searching for signal. The goal of connecting Kansas may seem too hard, too expensive, too slow, but I can guarantee you it’s worth all the, toil, trouble and time. Imagine where our state would be today if large swaths of the countryside lacked access to electricity or phone service. Broadband internet is the latest in a string of societal advances that will require a mix of solutions for everyone to gain access. While it’s tempting to just dust off the template used to light up every home in America for broadband, that misses the reality of the current technology. Fiber, wireless or beams from space are all options for increasing connectivity. Government action, like tax incentives, grants or regulation also has a role to play. Broadband access isn’t a silver bullet for rural revitalization, but it will open up tremendous opportunities for farmers, ranchers and others who want to live in wide-open spaces but still feel connected to the rest of the world. Someday I hope everyone gets to experience the joy of hurriedly replacing a bad router in the middle of a workday. The sooner the better.

 </figure>By GREG DOERING Kansas Farm BureauAfter a few days of blaming our service provider for a shaky internet connection, I recently discovered the real problem was the decade-old Wi-Fi router when it quit transmitting signal in the middle of a workday. I uttered a few choice words as I pulled out my phone and checked a local store for a viable replacement. I decided to go ahead and replace the modem as well since it predated the router. I found a decently priced combo, drove across town and back, then said a few more words while getting the whole thing set up. All told, it took just under an hour to complete. It was a minor inconvenience, and I had access to several workarounds if I wasn’t able to buy a new router immediately. I could have taken the old-fashioned route of connecting a computer directly to the modem like our caveman ancestors did. I also could have used my phone as a hotspot. In any event, the mild annoyance I encountered pales in comparison to the struggle of thousands of Kansans who lack any connectivity options at all. The pandemic has put a spotlight on just how important fast, reliable internet is for the state to prosper. Education, health care, business, entertainment and work are all possible uses in connected households. Kansas will spend $50 million in CARES Act funding to hook up an estimated 70,000 households to broadband, defined as download speeds of 25 megabits per second and upload speeds of 3 megabits per second. It’s a step in the right direction, but the 67 projects across the state will only scratch the surface of connecting every home, business, school and health facility to modern technology. The hard part in any network is always making the last-mile delivery. In cities where density means a mile of fiberoptic cable can give a company access to tens of thousands of potential customers or a wireless transceiver can cover multiple blocks, private companies will readily invest. But on the outskirts of town where there are fewer people and greater distances, the potential profit goes down. It evaporates entirely when you start looking at farms and ranches across Kansas that are miles apart. There’s a reason only 4 percent of urban Americans lack access to broadband while nearly 40 percent of their rural counterparts are searching for signal. The goal of connecting Kansas may seem too hard, too expensive, too slow, but I can guarantee you it’s worth all the, toil, trouble and time. Imagine where our state would be today if large swaths of the countryside lacked access to electricity or phone service. Broadband internet is the latest in a string of societal advances that will require a mix of solutions for everyone to gain access. While it’s tempting to just dust off the template used to light up every home in America for broadband, that misses the reality of the current technology. Fiber, wireless or beams from space are all options for increasing connectivity. Government action, like tax incentives, grants or regulation also has a role to play. Broadband access isn’t a silver bullet for rural revitalization, but it will open up tremendous opportunities for farmers, ranchers and others who want to live in wide-open spaces but still feel connected to the rest of the world. Someday I hope everyone gets to experience the joy of hurriedly replacing a bad router in the middle of a workday. INSIGHT: Connecting Kansas

On Oct. 14, 1964, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. 

In 1890, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States, was born in Denison, Texas.

In 1933, Nazi Germany announced it was withdrawing from the League of Nations. 

In 1939, a German U-boat torpedoed and sank the HMS Royal Oak, a British battleship anchored at Scapa Flow in Scotland's Orkney Islands; 833 of the more than 1,200 men aboard were killed. 

In 1944, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel took his own life rather than face trial and certain execution for allegedly conspiring against Adolf Hitler.

In 1947, U.S. Air Force Capt. Charles E. ("Chuck") Yeager became the first test pilot to break the sound barrier as he flew the experimental Bell XS-1 (later X-1) rocket plane over Muroc Dry Lake in California. 

In 1960, the idea of a Peace Corps was suggested by Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy to an audience of students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

In 2014, a second nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas came down with Ebola after contracting it from a dying patient. (The nurse, Amber Joy Vinson, was later declared free of the disease.)

In 2017, a truck bombing in Somalia's capital killed more than 500 people in one of the world's deadliest attacks in years; officials blamed the attack on the extremist group al-Shabab and said it was meant to target Mogadishu's international airport, but the bomb detonated in a crowded street after soldiers opened fire. The board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revoked the membership of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, after published reports about allegations of sexual harassment and rape against Weinstein. 

Ten years ago: Chile's 33 rescued miners posed with President Sebastian Pinera and were examined by doctors a day after they were freed from their underground prison. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad taunted arch-enemy Israel from just across the tense border in Lebanon, rallying tens of thousands of Hezbollah supporters.

Five years ago: Hundreds of soldiers fanned out in cities across Israel and authorities erected concrete barriers outside some Arab neighborhoods of east Jerusalem in a stepped-up effort to counter a monthlong wave of Palestinian violence. The state of Texas executed Licho Escamilla for the fatal 2001 shooting of Christopher Kevin James, a Dallas police officer who was trying to break up a brawl involving Escamilla.

One year ago: President Donald Trump announced sanctions targeting Turkey's economy in response to Turkey's assault against Kurdish fighters and civilians in Syria; the assault had begun after Trump announced that he was moving U.S. troops out of the way. Two researchers from MIT and one from Harvard won the Nobel Prize in economics for research into what works and what doesn't in the fight to reduce global poverty. Canadian writer Margaret Atwood and British author Bernardine Evaristo shared the Booker Prize after the judging panel for the prestigious fiction trophy refused to pick just one of them as the winner.

Today in History -- Oct. 14

Highs today will be around 15 degrees above normal as they top out in the 85 to 90 degree range, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita.

The warmth will be fleeting, however, as a cold front moves through the area this evening, bringing with it strong north winds. Areas along and especially west of Interstate 135 can expect wind gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range, NWS noted. Be sure to secure any loose outdoor items.

NWS reports that much cooler temperatures are expected for Thursday and Friday with highs only reaching the 60s.

Enjoy the unseasonable warmth while you can

Kansas Wesleyan’s speech and debate team returned to action the weekends of Oct. 3 and 10, garnering positive results at a pair of virtual tournaments.

The team competed in the Bob Derryberry 2020 Season Opener on the first of the two weekends, an event hosted by Southwest Baptist. Bryce Boyd (Oklahoma City, Okla.) garnered a second-place finish in open extemporaneous, as well as a third-place result in open informative. Abby Wray (Wichita, Kan.) was third in open program of oral interpretation and fifth in open dramatic interpretation.

Finally, Nicholas Cheney (Scott City, Kan.) was the top novice in dramatic interpretation.

The team then returned to action by hosting the Forensic Flyover, a three-day virtual event that included KWU’s first parliamentary debate tournament of the season. Boyd and Savannah Bonilla (Salina, Kan.) were semi-finalists in the tournament, posting a 5-0 record heading into the semifinal round. Wray and Madi Mitchell (Mulvane, Kan.) finished with a solid 3-2 record during the tourney.&nbsp;
