NWS: Mostly sunny and seasonal through Friday

Police are investigating the theft of multiple items from a Salina business earlier this week.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that sometime between 11 p.m. Monday and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday someone broke into Kansas Backflow Testing, 146 South Third Street. A lock was pried from the door and a light by the door was damaged, he noted. Damage for both was estimated at $50.

According to Forrester, items taken from the business include the following.

Watts TK9A hydraulic gauges valued at $4500

A Milwaukee drill and batteries valued at $200

Officers found several items hidden in a tree row north of the business and those items were returned to the business, Forrester explained. Those items included hand tools, dollies, a vacuum, weed eaters, and a wire welder, at a total value of $350, he added.

According to Forrester, video surveillance from the area is being reviewed.

Multiple items stolen from Salina business

Thanksgiving is just a couple of weeks away, and in 2020 it may not seem like we have a lot to be thankful for. I admit that the last six months or so have been tough, and if you are watching the news it is hard to be very optimistic. However, I am really excited about this Thanksgiving, and all of us in agriculture should be, too. Sure, we may not be able to have the large family reunions and dinners we are all used to. Let us not focus on the negative, instead we need to be reminded of all that we have and just how great our nation is. Never forget that we live in the greatest nation and our freedoms and rights are the envy of the rest of the world. That, my friends, all starts with us as farmers and ranchers, and we should be proud of that fact. More importantly, we need to celebrate it this Thanksgiving. As farmers and ranchers, we are part of the foundation of our United States of America. The Pilgrims recognized that. Without an abundant, safe, wholesome food supply it is hard to build a nation, much less one as great as ours. In the middle of the worst pandemic most of us have ever seen, our grocery store shelves remained stocked. There might have been a few things that were harder to find, but consumers could still go into the store and find food to sustain themselves and their families. I would dare even say they had plenty of variety. Those of us in agriculture are so good at what we do we can function with less than 2 percent of the population involved in growing the food and fiber. That allows the other 98 percent of the population to grow our economy and provide services to give us the lifestyle we are all accustomed to. We do not just feed our people; we grow enough to share with the rest of the world by utilizing technology we have developed. This Thanksgiving all of us in the United States need to look at all we have been given and be thankful. Without a doubt that includes our great system of agricultural production. We must also not take all these blessings for granted. I hope this Thanksgiving will be a time the rest of the population realizes just how good they have it, and that is due in large part to all of us who farm and ranch. We may have seen some dark days, and there probably are more ahead of us. However, we can all rest assured that the store shelves will be stocked and there will be plenty of food for Thanksgiving, no matter how many are gathered around our table. We all have so much to be thankful for and that is something we should not forget.

INSIGHT: Giving thanks

Central Kansas Extension District 4-H program honored its members Sunday at the 4-H Celebration of Achievements which was held virtually with clubs holding watch parties.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The members received membership, bronze, clover, emerald, silver, silver guard, gold, gold guard, leadership, and citizenship achievement awards for their individual accomplishments during the 2019-2020 4-H year.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Outstanding 4-H Member of the Year was presented to Emma Littich, Smoky View 4-H Club.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 4-H Family of the Year Awards was presented to the Tracy Piepho 4-H Family and the Steve George 4-H Family.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 4-H Alumni Award was presented to Leah Hennes and Tim Myers.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Friend of 4-H Award was presented to Suzanna Swenson.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 4-H Volunteer of the Year was presented to Spencer Schrader. The Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer Award was presented to Rita Baltazor, Michelle Hynes, and Luise Collins (posthumously).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas 4-H Key Award is a prestigious award earned by Kansas 4-H members and takes three years of preplanning to become eligible for this award.&nbsp;&nbsp;This award is sponsored by American AgCredit. 4-H honors awarded during virtual celebration

Today is Wednesday, Nov. 11, the 316th day of 2020. There are 50 days left in the year. Today is Veterans Day. 

On Nov. 11, 1918, fighting in World War I ended as the Allies and Germany signed an armistice in the Forest of Compiegne. 

In 1620, 41 Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower, anchored off Massachusetts, signed a compact calling for a "body politick." 

In 1831, former slave Nat Turner, who'd led a slave uprising, was executed in Jerusalem, Virginia. 

In 1889, Washington became the 42nd state.

In 1921, the remains of an unidentified American service member were interred in a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in a ceremony presided over by President Warren G. Harding. 

In 1929, the Ambassador Bridge spanning the Detroit River between Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, Canada, was dedicated. 

In 1942, during World War II, Germany completed its occupation of France. 

In 1965, Rhodesia proclaimed its independence from Britain.

In 1966, Gemini 12 blasted off on a four-day mission with astronauts James A. Lovell and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr. aboard; it was the tenth and final flight of NASA's Gemini program. 

In 1972, the U.S. Army turned over its base at Long Binh to the South Vietnamese, symbolizing the end of direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War. 

In 1987, following the failure of two Supreme Court nominations, President Ronald Reagan announced his choice of Judge Anthony M. Kennedy, who went on to win confirmation.

In 1992, the Church of England voted to ordain women as priests. 

In 1998, President Clinton ordered warships, planes and troops to the Persian Gulf as he laid out his case for a possible attack on Iraq. Iraq, meanwhile, showed no sign of backing down from its refusal to deal with U.N. weapons inspectors. 

Ten years ago: A disabled Carnival Splendor cruise liner inched into San Diego Bay after three nightmarish days adrift on the Pacific, bringing cheers from passengers who described trying to pass the time with limited food, backed-up toilets and dark cabins. One year ago: A day after stepping down amid election fraud allegations, former Bolivian President Evo Morales said he was headed for Mexico; his supporters and foes clashed on the streets of the Bolivian capital following his resignation. (Morales would settle in Argentina; he said after his party's victory in October elections that he planned to return to Bolivia.) SpaceX launched 60 mini satellites from a Falcon rocket; they joined 60 others that had been launched in May. Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, declared a state of emergency because of unprecedented wildfire danger.

More than 20 civic leaders and members of the community gathered at Gypsum Hill Cemetery Tuesday morning for a wreath laying ceremony honoring six Salina founders/pioneers and their families, a number of whom were veterans.

Salina Mayor Mike Hoppock helped lead the wreath laying ceremony, which was hosted by the Smoky Hill Museum. Hoppock shared a bio about each pioneer or founder after laying a fresh greenery wreath at each of their gravestones. All wreaths were donated by BEL Tree Farm, owned by Michelle and Aaron Peck. Museum Director Susan Hawksworth and the Very Rev. David Hodges of Christ Cathedral, also spoke.

"In the beginning, five town founders from four families formed the Salina Town Company. Those four families were Campbell, Phillips, Spillman and Muir, represented by Alexander M. Campbell, Col. William A. Phillips, his brother David Phillips, James Muir, and Alexander Spillman. They joined together in 1858 to stake out 320 acres of land along the Smoky Hill River. The town’s site became official in 1859, when the territorial legislature granted Salina’s town charter, two years before Kansas became the 34th state," Hoppock told those assembled.

Following is biography information about those honored as shared by Hoppock.

Campbell joined his future brother-in-law William Phillips and their friend James Muir to lay out the preliminary survey of Salina in March 1858. That summer, William’s sister Christina Phillips, joined the men as the only permanent female resident in the area. She and Alexander Campbell were married that fall in Riley City by a district judge. Often called the ‘Mother of Salina,’ Christina Addison Phillips Campbell helped Alexander run a trading post, and had a reputation among the local Native Americans for being very fair. It was known by some that Christina was strict about observing the Sabbath, but loved fishing and hunting more than doing housework. Alexander was Saline County’s first postmaster - collecting and dispensing long-awaited area mail at their trading-post store.

David L. Phillips was the younger brother of Colonel William A. Phillips. David was one of the five original members of the Salina Town Company. Although his monument rests here in Gypsum Hills, his body does not, as David’s disappearance as an adult is still a mystery. In June 1883, Phillips left Salina on a trip to Washington Territory through California. While traveling by train through the Arizona desert, he became distraught, saying he had been robbed. At the Volcano Springs stop, Phillips jumped from the train without his hat, shoes or coat and ran into the barren landscape. Although David’s family spent considerable time and money to find him, he was never located. His reasons for vanishing remain unknown.

Some consider Colonel William A. Phillips, David’s older brother, to be the primary force of Salina’s founding in 1858. Born in Scotland, Phillips came first to Illinois with his parents and siblings in 1839. A free-state spokesman during Kansas Territorial days, Phillips was a New York Tribune war correspondent for publisher Horace Greeley. Later, Phillips earned distinction as the commander of the Third Indian Home Guards.

After the Civil War, Phillips served as legal counsel for the Cherokee Nation, then as the 74th District representative to the Kansas legislature, then a member-at-large in the U.S. House of Representatives. Phillips had two wives and nine children, but is buried in Gypsum Hill Cemetery near just two of his relatives -- his mother, Christiana Phillips, known by early settlers as "Grandma Phillips" and his nephew, Maxwell Phillips, Jr. The monument to Phillips’ left remembers three of his children who died young.

Benjamin J.F. Hanna and Margaret Phillips Hanna

Benjamin J.F. Hanna and Margaret Phillips Hanna made many contributions to early Salina. Ben was an outspoken newspaperman with strong abolitionist views. When the Civil War began, President Lincoln appointed him Quartermaster of the United States Volunteers. While Hanna was away during the war, Margaret lived with her brothers William and David or her mother, Christiana Phillips. Margaret owned the first and only sewing machine for miles around. She is remembered for sewing an American flag that was flown in the middle of town to demonstrate Salina’s Union loyalties. After the war, Ben and Margaret established a permanent home and in 1867, Hanna founded the town’s first newspaper, the Salina Herald, which was printed on a hand press from a building on East Iron Avenue.

Oscar and Johanna Seitz came to Kansas from Kassel, Germany. Oscar served as a Union soldier during the Civil War. Afterward, he was advised to make a home and a life in Salina. He established his drug and chemical business, Seitz Drug Store, before the railroad reached Salina in 1867, which helped him rapidly prosper. After courting Johanna by correspondence, Oscar brought her across the ocean to be his wife. Johanna adapted well to Kansas, enriching Salina with her love of music. She owned the first piano in town, which was frequently transported by wagon to dances and parties. The family’s drug store, the Seitz Real Estate Company and the Seitz Shoe Store were longtime fixtures in downtown Salina. The couple had eight children.

August Bondi was a guerilla fighter with abolitionist John Brown during the days of Bleeding Kansas. Of Jewish faith, Bondi was born in Germany and fought at age 15 in a Hungarian war for liberty. Exiled as a result, Bondi and his family arrived in New Orleans in 1848, then went to St. Louis via the Mississippi River. After several years’ work as a clerk, typesetter, and teacher, Bondi was drawn to Kansas in 1855 by Sunflower-State border struggles between proslavery and free-state factions.

 </figure>More than 20 civic leaders and members of the community gathered at Gypsum Hill Cemetery Tuesday morning for a wreath laying ceremony honoring six Salina founders/pioneers and their families, a number of whom were veterans.Salina Mayor Mike Hoppock helped lead the wreath laying ceremony, which was hosted by the Smoky Hill Museum. Hoppock shared a bio about each pioneer or founder after laying a fresh greenery wreath at each of their gravestones. All wreaths were donated by BEL Tree Farm, owned by Michelle and Aaron Peck. Museum Director Susan Hawksworth and the Very Rev. David Hodges of Christ Cathedral, also spoke."In the beginning, five town founders from four families formed the Salina Town Company. Those four families were Campbell, Phillips, Spillman and Muir, represented by Alexander M. Campbell, Col. William A. Phillips, his brother David Phillips, James Muir, and Alexander Spillman. They joined together in 1858 to stake out 320 acres of land along the Smoky Hill River. The town’s site became official in 1859, when the territorial legislature granted Salina’s town charter, two years before Kansas became the 34th state," Hoppock told those assembled.<figure>

CampbellCampbell joined his future brother-in-law William Phillips and their friend James Muir to lay out the preliminary survey of Salina in March 1858. That summer, William’s sister Christina Phillips, joined the men as the only permanent female resident in the area. She and Alexander Campbell were married that fall in Riley City by a district judge. Often called the ‘Mother of Salina,’ Christina Addison Phillips Campbell helped Alexander run a trading post, and had a reputation among the local Native Americans for being very fair. It was known by some that Christina was strict about observing the Sabbath, but loved fishing and hunting more than doing housework. Alexander was Saline County’s first postmaster - collecting and dispensing long-awaited area mail at their trading-post store.David L. PhillipsDavid L. Phillips was the younger brother of Colonel William A. Phillips. David was one of the five original members of the Salina Town Company. Although his monument rests here in Gypsum Hills, his body does not, as David’s disappearance as an adult is still a mystery. In June 1883, Phillips left Salina on a trip to Washington Territory through California. While traveling by train through the Arizona desert, he became distraught, saying he had been robbed. At the Volcano Springs stop, Phillips jumped from the train without his hat, shoes or coat and ran into the barren landscape. Although David’s family spent considerable time and money to find him, he was never located. His reasons for vanishing remain unknown.Colonel William A. PhillipsSome consider Colonel William A. Phillips, David’s older brother, to be the primary force of Salina’s founding in 1858. Born in Scotland, Phillips came first to Illinois with his parents and siblings in 1839. A free-state spokesman during Kansas Territorial days, Phillips was a New York Tribune war correspondent for publisher Horace Greeley. Later, Phillips earned distinction as the commander of the Third Indian Home Guards.After the Civil War, Phillips served as legal counsel for the Cherokee Nation, then as the 74th District representative to the Kansas legislature, then a member-at-large in the U.S. House of Representatives. Phillips had two wives and nine children, but is buried in Gypsum Hill Cemetery near just two of his relatives -- his mother, Christiana Phillips, known by early settlers as "Grandma Phillips" and his nephew, Maxwell Phillips, Jr. The monument to Phillips’ left remembers three of his children who died young.Benjamin J.F. Hanna and Margaret Phillips HannaBenjamin J.F. Hanna and Margaret Phillips Hanna made many contributions to early Salina. Ben was an outspoken newspaperman with strong abolitionist views. When the Civil War began, President Lincoln appointed him Quartermaster of the United States Volunteers. While Hanna was away during the war, Margaret lived with her brothers William and David or her mother, Christiana Phillips. Margaret owned the first and only sewing machine for miles around. She is remembered for sewing an American flag that was flown in the middle of town to demonstrate Salina’s Union loyalties. After the war, Ben and Margaret established a permanent home and in 1867, Hanna founded the town’s first newspaper, the Salina Herald, which was printed on a hand press from a building on East Iron Avenue.Oscar and Johanna SeitzOscar and Johanna Seitz came to Kansas from Kassel, Germany. Oscar served as a Union soldier during the Civil War. Afterward, he was advised to make a home and a life in Salina. He established his drug and chemical business, Seitz Drug Store, before the railroad reached Salina in 1867, which helped him rapidly prosper. After courting Johanna by correspondence, Oscar brought her across the ocean to be his wife. Johanna adapted well to Kansas, enriching Salina with her love of music. She owned the first piano in town, which was frequently transported by wagon to dances and parties. The family’s drug store, the Seitz Real Estate Company and the Seitz Shoe Store were longtime fixtures in downtown Salina. The couple had eight children.August BondiAugust Bondi was a guerilla fighter with abolitionist John Brown during the days of Bleeding Kansas. Of Jewish faith, Bondi was born in Germany and fought at age 15 in a Hungarian war for liberty. Exiled as a result, Bondi and his family arrived in New Orleans in 1848, then went to St. Louis via the Mississippi River. Salina founders, pioneers honored with wreath laying ceremony

CONCORDIA-- Cloud County Health Center (CCHC) is scheduled to move to a no visitor policy beginning Wednesday.

"With the drastic increase in positive COVID-19 cases in the county, Cloud County Health Center has made the decision to move to a “No Visitor Policy” effective Wednesday November 11th. While this may be very difficult for our patients and their families, we are confident this is the right thing to do for the safety of our staff, patients, and community," CCHC noted today in a news release.

The policy applies to all inpatients, the emergency department, and outpatient areas, including the lab, x-ray, dialysis, therapy, and wound care, the news release noted. CCHC's Family Care Center will continue to allow one visitor if necessary.

Detailed information on the “No Visitor” restrictions and exceptions include the following.

●One caregiver for patients younger than 18 allowed (must stay in patient room the entire time)

●One companion for patients with disabilities or impairments needing assistance allowed (must stay in patient room the entire time)

●For all other patients- no visitors are allowed.

●Comfort Care visitor exceptions will be made for patients nearing end of life on a case by case basis.

Everyone will continue to use the main entrance for hospital access and will continue to be screened according to KDHE guidelines currently in place, according to the news release. 

"Our employees continue to be diligent with self-screening in order to protect themselves, their peers, family and loved ones, and our community!

At this time we are not discontinuing any services. We do ask that you call ahead if you need to be seen in the Family Care Center or emergency room if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID," the news release noted.

Weather History for Tuesday, November 10, 2020, from the National Weather Service in Wichita: In 1915, November turned nasty when 3 tornadoes, of which 2 were violent F4s, struck Central and South Central Kansas. The first violent tornado, with a track 35 miles long and around 300 yards wide, struck Great Bend, killing 11 and injuring 75. Damage totaled around $1 million as 160 homes were destroyed. Around 1,000 sheep were killed. Hundreds of ducks that were killed fell from the sky around 25 miles northeast of the end of the tornado's track. The F4 twister that struck South Central Kansas carved a track 16 miles long and around 200 yards wide from 4 miles south of Peck to Derby. Four people were killed and 28 were injured. The other twister, a narrow F2 with a track 3 miles long, but only 30 yards wide, moved just a couple miles southeast of Pratt.

In 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald, a 729-foot long Great Lakes freighter, sank during a gale in Eastern Lake Superior about 17 miles northwest of the entrance to Whitefish Bay at a depth of 530 feet. All 29 crew members on board died in the tragedy, making it the most 'famous' disaster in the history of Great Lakes shipping.

In 2002, "The Veteran's Day Tornado Outbreak" reached a plateau. From the 9th to the 11th, 83 tornadoes struck 17 states. Of this total, 60 struck on the 10th. The most powerful and most noteworthy tornado was the violent F4 that struck Van Wert, Ohio that afternoon. The tornado killed 4 and injured 17 along a track 52.8 miles long and around 1/2 mile wide. In all, 164 homes were heavily damaged and 43 destroyed or leveled. It's likely the number of casualties would've been much higher as the Twin Cinemas Theater was heavily damaged. Van Wert is located 77 miles southwest of Toledo. In all, the outbreak killed 36 and is the 3rd largest November outbreak on record.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Online tool shows potential risk of large gatherings amid pandemic

Part of Santa Fe Avenue will be closed Wednesday.

Santa Fe Avenue between Mulberry Street and Iron Avenue will be closed&nbsp;from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday for crane work on the tower of the Stiefel Theatre, the City of Salina noted in a news release this afternoon. The crane will be blocking the Walnut Street-Santa Fe Avenue intersection, the city noted.

The crane will be in place to put the new spire on the Stiefel Theatre tower.

City closing part of Santa Fe Wednesday for Stiefel spire raising

Due to the Veteran’s Day holiday, Saline County will not issue a COVID-19 update on Wednesday.&nbsp; 

According to a news release from the county, contact tracers will continue to work with new positive cases through the holiday.&nbsp; 

The next scheduled county COVID-19 update will be on Friday, the county noted.

“The Health Department is extremely overwhelmed with the number of new case investigations,” said Jason Tiller, Saline County health officer.&nbsp; “With the excessive amount of cases, it slows down our staff in the ability to contact new cases quickly.&nbsp; Our staff is still working on contacting cases from yesterday and we received over 50 new cases today.&nbsp; A single case investigation can take a few hours; but with any amount of complexity, one case can take an entire day to properly investigate.”&nbsp; 

Tiller continued, “Please be patient with us, it may take several days before all contacts in one case can be called.&nbsp; Our staff continues to work very hard to do what is required of them.&nbsp; Please be patient, please be kind.”

If you have been tested for COVID-19, you need to isolate in your home until your test results are back.&nbsp; Those that are notified of a positive COVID-19 test you should:

●Isolate for at minimum 10 days from symptom onset and be 72 hours fever free and have a significant improvement in symptoms.

●Close contacts are defined as those persons within 6 feet or greater for 10 minutes of more two days prior to the positive cases’ symptom onset date.

●Close contacts need to quarantine for two weeks from their last contact date unless living in the same household, and then it would be two weeks past the positive case’s isolation release date.

●If after several days, the health department has not reached out to a close contact, the health department may not have been notified of the contact exposure and you will need to notify the health department; but please be patient and continue to quarantine until then.

We’ve been in this pandemic for nine months and as we enter cold and flu season it is just as important now as it has always been to continue to do the things that we know works to help slow the spread of COVID-19:

●Wash your hands often, for at least 20 seconds with warm soapy water.&nbsp; Use hand sanitizer if you do not have access to soap and water.

●Maintain physical distance between yourself and others of at least 6 feet or more.

●Wear masks in public spaces as required by city ordinance and county resolution.&nbsp; Masks do not prevent you from getting COVID-19, the flu, or other contagious diseases but they do, however, prevent other people from catching certain diseases from you.&nbsp; You must cover your nose and mouth for masks to be effective.

●Sanitize frequently touched surfaces and areas such as doorknobs, handles, cell phones, tablets, etc.

●Stay home if you are sick.&nbsp; Regardless if you think it may be a cold, it could be allergies, but it also could be something worse.
