The Greater Salina Community Foundation recently awarded over $56,000 to 15 charitable projects and organizations through its competitive Spring Grant Cycle.

This year's grant recipients include funding toward supporting renovations to serve the community, improve local childcare centers, and support unique local projects.

This cycle’s grant recipients include the following:

Bethany Home Association, $3,000 to support the Bethany Home neighborhood renovation project by updating lighting.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Child Development Center, $3,414 to purchase material and supplies to build a storage shed and covered area on the infant and toddler playground.

Kansas Wesleyan University, $4,950 to support the Kansas Wesleyan University Ham Radio Club.

Prairieland Market, $5,000 to purchase a Master-Bilt BEM/BEL-CP Series Endless Glass Door Merchandiser.

Salina Child Care Association, $4,329.55 to purchase 3 Baby Trends Expedition Double Strollers and 2 Children’s Factory 6 Passenger Bye-Bye Buggies.

Episcopal Social Services, Inc., $2,712 to purchase items needed for the culinary unit and snack bar for the Clubhouse members.

USD 305, $2,400 to help purchase the USD 305 subscription to BookBreak.

Salina Crossroads Marathon, $4,000 to purchase a new wider start/finish line, pre-race event signage, race day signage, brightly colored footprints, and large welcome runner signs.

Love, Chloe Foundation, $5,000 to support the Love, Chloe Childhood Cancer Moms’ Retreat.

Salina Art Center, $2,236.27 to support youth education.

St. Mary’s Grade School, $5,000 for the purchase and installation of a security fob system for Love N’ Learn.

Smoky Hill Education Service Center, $4,500 to purchase supplies for activities, workshops, and family nights to improve STEAM teaching using space exploration.

City of Assaria, $2,000 to support the Assaria Summer Youth Program.

Cornerstone Classical School, $2676.90 to purchase teacher manuals, student music books, a tuner, instrument storage, and a violin.

USD 305, $4,999 to support students attending the 2025 Salina South Cougar Debate &amp;amp; Forensics National Tournament.

This round of grants was made possible by three funds at the community foundation: the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, which supports projects and programs that improve the community’s quality of life; the Fund for Greater Salina which supports funds used for a variety of charitable causes that positively impact the community; and the L.P. “Pat” Mullen Fund, which supports hands-on learning opportunities for youth in the areas of arts and humanities as well as science, technology and invention.

Applications for the Foundation’s next community grant cycle are due by 11:59 pm on Friday, August&nbsp;15th .

ABILENE - The Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau is proud to announce that the Kansas Gunsmoke Trail&nbsp;has been named the 2025 Collaboration of the Year&nbsp;by the Midwest Travel Network&nbsp;during its annual conference held in Grand Island, Nebraska.

The Kansas Gunsmoke Trail is a cooperative tourism campaign that connects four iconic Kansas communities: Wichita, Hays, Dodge City, and Abilene. Through shared storytelling, historic attractions, and cowboy charm, the trail captures the spirit of the Wild West and invites travelers to explore it town by town.

“If you’ve followed Kansas destinations this past year, you know this trail is drawing attention from travelers of all ages,” said Sara Broers, co-founder of Midwest Travel Network. “It’s fun to see how this collaboration includes four Kansas towns and Midwest Travel Network content creators.”

Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, praised the strength of the partnership. “We know the best way to share Kansas is by working together,” said Roller Weeks. “The Kansas Gunsmoke Trail builds on the stories travelers already love, including legendary characters, classic TV shows, and unforgettable small towns, and brings them to life across the state. DODGE CITY, Kan. — The 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl will kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City, featuring 88 of the state’s top high school football players in one final showcase.

Eagle Media is the official radio broadcast partner for the Kansas Shrine Bowl. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with Gerard Wellbrock on play-by-play, Dustin Armbruster as analyst, and Sean Boston and Anthony Gorges reporting from the West and East sidelines, respectively.

The Shrine Bowl of Kansas, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to producing annual events that benefit Shriners Children’s. Since its inception in 1974, the organization has raised nearly $4 million for the healthcare network, which provides pediatric specialty care regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

On Tuesday, June 17th – "National Mascot Day" – Dan Meers, the franchise’s original KC Wolf, announced his retirement after 35 years as the team’s beloved mascot and “Director of Shenanigans.”

“Dan Meers has been the heart and soul behind KC Wolf for 35 years,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. “Since joining the organization in 1990, Dan helped establish KC Wolf not only as a source of energy and enthusiasm on gamedays, but as a symbol of pride and passion for all of Chiefs Kingdom. He ensured that his alter ego brought joy to people young and old, and his deep connection to the Kansas City community has made him a beloved figure to generations of Chiefs fans.”

A native of St. Charles, Missouri, Meers graduated from the University of Missouri in 1990, where he served four years as Truman the Tiger. Widely regarded as one of the nation’s top collegiate mascots, he finished second in the 1988 and 1990 National Collegiate Mascot Championships and was named the top overall college mascot in the country in 1989. After graduating with honors, Meers began his professional career as Fredbird with the St. Louis Cardinals. 

After a short stint in professional baseball, Meers joined the Kansas City Chiefs fulltime in 1990 after the Chiefs introduced their brand-new mascot, KC Wolf, in 1989. Over the next 35 years, Meers became the NFL’s longest-tenured mascot by more than a dozen years. He performed at 307 regular and postseason games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium and 375 total games, including preseason matchups. 

Meers also appeared at six international games as KC Wolf, including four American Bowl preseason games (Berlin, 1990; Tokyo, 1994 and 1998; and Monterrey, 1996) and two regular season international contests (London, 2015 and Frankfurt, 2023). He appeared at all five Super Bowls (LIV, LV, LVII, LVIII, LIX) the club has participated in since the 2019 season, including the three wins (LIV, LVII, LVIII). 

KC Wolf was selected to 14 Pro Bowls and participated in nine NFL all-star games during Meers’ tenure.

“To say I’m a blessed man is an understatement. For the past 35 years I’ve had my dream job. I’ve worked for the team I love, in the city I love, with the people I love. After all these years I certainly hope Chiefs Kingdom knows just how much I love and appreciate them. I have memories and stories that will last me a lifetime,” Meers said. “I especially want to thank my family, the Hunt family, the Chiefs organization and the greatest fans in the world for all the love, support, and laughs we’ve shared over the past 35 years. I’m truly a blessed, blessed man!”

Throughout his career, Meers brought the spirit of Chiefs Kingdom as KC Wolf to 12 countries, 38 states, and countless events. He visited U.S. military installations at home and overseas and made approximately 10,000 appearances, including community events, birthday parties, banquets, weddings, grand openings, and more.

Meers also developed multiple speaking engagement programs aimed at promoting character, positivity and purpose. His school, corporate, community, and faith-based presentations helped define KC Wolf not just as a mascot, but as “a character with character.” KC Wolf became the first NFL mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006. 

In 2020, Meers became the first – and remains the only – mascot to be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. He was also twice recognized by the franchise for his exceptional contributions to the club and the community, earning the Chiefs Presidential Award in 1993 and the Chiefs Service Award in 2016.

In addition to his work as KC Wolf, Meers is a noted motivational speaker and author of two books: "Wolves Can’t Fly and Mascot on a Mission." All proceeds from books sales have supported global missions and ministries through the 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Character That Counts. 

Meers has made numerous trips internationally, serving orphans and underserved communities around the world, including in Honduras, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, India, and Tanzania. Chiefs Kingdom is invited to celebrate Meers’ retirement by sharing their favorite photos and videos of themselves or their families with KC Wolf over the years at <a href="http://www.chiefs.com/wolfmemories">www.chiefs.com/wolfmemories</a>.

Meers will continue to be involved with the Chiefs organization as a consultant and backup KC Wolf. The search for the next KC Wolf is underway, with top candidates having already completed interviews with the club.

He visited U.S. military installations at home and overseas and made approximately 10,000 appearances, including community events, birthday parties, banquets, weddings, grand openings, and more.Meers also developed multiple speaking engagement programs aimed at promoting character, positivity and purpose. His school, corporate, community, and faith-based presentations helped define KC Wolf not just as a mascot, but as “a character with character.” KC Wolf became the first NFL mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2020, Meers became the first – and remains the only – mascot to be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. He was also twice recognized by the franchise for his exceptional contributions to the club and the community, earning the Chiefs Presidential Award in 1993 and the Chiefs Service Award in 2016.In addition to his work as KC Wolf, Meers is a noted motivational speaker and author of two books: "Wolves Can’t Fly and Mascot on a Mission." All proceeds from books sales have supported global missions and ministries through the 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Character That Counts. Meers has made numerous trips internationally, serving orphans and underserved communities around the world, including in Honduras, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, India, and Tanzania. From leadership and morale on campus to excellence as employees, students are the heart of Kansas State University. Two outstanding K-State students have been recognized for their contributions to the Salina campus.

Savannah Phillips, sophomore in applied business and technology from&nbsp;Minneapolis, KS&nbsp;and Nathan Weiss, senior in aviation management from&nbsp;Salina, KS have earned awards for going above and beyond the expected duties of earning a college education.

"Both Savannah and Nathan embody what K-State Salina is all about with their hard work and commitment to excellence," said Kyle Chamberlin, K-State Salina associate dean of student affairs. "We are thrilled to honor both students who have made a lasting impact on our campus culture and who have bright futures ahead."

Phillips is this year's recipient of the K-State Salina Student Employee of the Year award, which recognizes the invaluable services student employees perform for the K-State Salina campus. Recipients demonstrate reliability, initiative, and professionalism and leave a lasting imprint on those they serve. Phillips is a student employee in the campus's fiscal services department.

According to Phillips' nominator, she is a model for other student employees to emulate.

"Not only does she show up on time every time, but she also seeks out additional opportunities to work," said her nominator. "Her assigned tasks are completed without being prompted, and she happily takes on extra tasks as they arise. Phillips will consistently ask around the office to assist with additional tasks when her work is complete."

Weiss is this year's Outstanding Graduating Senior award recipient for the Salina campus. This award acknowledges the significant student life contributions of graduating seniors during their K-State careers. Directors and staff members in the Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs on the Manhattan and Salina campuses nominate candidates, and the winners are selected by a committee.

Weiss' nominator said that he has made a remarkable impact on the K-State Salina community through his many roles, including as a resident assistant and a tutor for the campus's Writing Center, and his involvement in the Student Governing Association.

"Nathan's ability to make others feel welcome, heard and valued has left a lasting mark on students and staff alike," his nominator said. "Whether helping a resident navigate a difficult situation, planning enriching events or lending his creative talents to support campus initiatives, Nathan consistently goes above and beyond. His commitment to inclusivity, mentorship and learning is evident in everything he does — from designing meaningful programs to completing Safe Zone and Green Bandana trainings."

K-State Salina students honored for leadership in campus employment and student life

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in May. This is unchanged from 3.8% in April and an increase from 3.5% in May 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas decreased to 67.0% in May, according to a media release from the KDOL.

The unemployment rate in Saline County is up slightly from 3.2 percent in April to 3.3 percent in May.&nbsp; The rate in Dickinson County remained steady at&nbsp; 3.7 percent.&nbsp; Mitchell County saw a significant drop from 5.1 percent to 3.8 percent last month.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,800 from April. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 1,900 over the month, while government decreased by 100. The largest job gains in the private sector were in manufacturing (+1,600 jobs). The largest decrease was in&nbsp;professional and business services&nbsp;(-700 jobs).

Since May 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 12,500. This change is due to an increase of 2,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 10,300 government jobs.

Saturday Morning Show preview for June 21

Many concerns have raised after a debris pile-up/river overflow that occurred on Wednesday night and into the morning of Thursday, June 19th at the Smoky Hill River channel near Bill Burke Park off E. Crawford.

According to the City of Salina Utilities Department, the cause of the river overflow was due to the surrounding areas of Salina receiving 'heavy rainfall' a couple of days ago and carried on over into the&nbsp;the Smoky Hill River.

Utilities Director Martha Tasker stated that water flow rates in the river have been in the 30 - 33 cubic feet per second range, before the flooding occurred.&nbsp;However after the rainfall, the water flow rate in the river went up to about 3,000 cubic feet per second. Tasker stated that this was enough water to bring in debris from the dried up river channel, into the river flow and wall area.

“It is not something I can say in my almost 22 years here, that I have seen something like that before," said Tasker.

According to Tasker, the Utilities Department&nbsp;contacted the US Army Corps of Engineers&nbsp;and other agencies on what course of action to take. Currently, the Utilities Department is gathering information on how to solve the issue.

Tasker recommends people to avoid the area for safety precautions.

City of Salina 'gathering information' on a course of action after Smoky Hill River flooding

NEW CAMBRIA - Peace Lutheran Church in New Cambria, KS will be hosting a community-wide event that includes a car show, crafts show, delicious food and a city-wide garage sale.

On Saturday, June 21st, Peach Lutheran Church (212 1st St.) in New Cambria will be hosting their annual car show from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Those wanting to register their vehicle can do so beforehand from 8:00 am - 10:00 am.

According to Jean Curry from Peace Lutheran Church, lunch will be available with homemade pies, pulled pork, hot dogs and walking tacos. A city-wide garage sale will take place as well and Peace Lutheran Church will be holding a craft show during the event.

Saline County Fire District #5 will be making an appearance during the car show from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, as they will give handouts to children attending the event.&nbsp;

Curry stated they are still looking for more cars to register. Those wanting to register, can do so by leaving a donation of any amount towards the youth program at Peace Lutheran Church.

The Salina Art Center Cinema has announced three films that will be premiering at the end of this month and the start of July. Tickets are on sale now for these films.

Mike Flanagan has directed Stephen King tales to gruesome, horrific effect (Gerald’s Game,&nbsp;Doctor Sleep) but his latest film might be the crown jewel of King Cinema. It’s not gross-out horror or tidal waves of blood. This isn’t the pulpy stuff of&nbsp;Pet Sematary, but a heartfelt, resonant meditation on King’s favorite recurring subject:&nbsp;death—and how people deal (or try not to deal) with its inevitability.&nbsp;The&nbsp;Life&nbsp;of&nbsp;Chuck&nbsp;is based on a King novella, which allows Flanagan to create a more delicate, haunting atmosphere, rather than rush to fill in plot points. 

It starts with the ultimate terror: the end of the world. Additional uneasiness comes from Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Tom Hiddleston), whose image keeps appearing on billboards and ads for an undefined reason; while&nbsp;Chuck&nbsp;hovers in the background, a divorced couple (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Karen Gillan) try to maintain normalcy as the Earth literally falls apart. The film is comprised of three chapters introduced by Nick Offerman’s narration and presented in backward order, taking us from the Apocalypse to the origins of the mysterious “Chuck.” We see a spectacular, inexplicable display of dancing prowess from Hiddleston, then flash back to his childhood when he’s played by Benjamin Sajak (in elementary school) and Jacob Tremblay (as a teenager). 

This section recalls the nostalgia of wistful&nbsp;Stand By Me, smartly utilizing the gravitas of Mark Hamill and Mia Sara as&nbsp;Chuck’s grandparents, and showcases King’s underappreciated strength for creating realistic, three-dimensional adolescent male characters. As we see&nbsp;Chuck’s development, including his growing love of dance, we start to see the whole picture, and the full meaning of the final chapter becomes clear. 

The result is emotionally shattering and unforgettable,&nbsp;The Shawshank Redemption’s equal in how effectively it moves audiences, but with a poetic tone that lingers long after the film’s last frames.

If Stanley Kubrick’s obsessively precise framing and detailed set design were combined with the quirky characterizations and lunatic unpredictability of the Coen Brothers, it might come close to explaining the aesthetic of director Wes Anderson. But what’s missing from that description is an underlying warmth and humanity that is special to Anderson.&nbsp;

'The Phoenician Scheme' is an exemplar of his style, featuring oddball cameos from unexpected scene-stealers like Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, and Benedict Cumberbatch, plenty of absurdly perfect symmetrical compositions, lots of funny visual jokes in the background—and at its core, a genuinely moving relationship between the main characters: Benicio del Toro as ruthless mogul Zsa-zsa Korda and his daughter Liesl (Mia Threapleton). 

After a failed assassination attempt gives Korda a look at the afterlife, he takes Liesl on a trip to meet with various relatives and associates to complete some business chicanery called the Phoenician Scheme—but it’s also a pretext to reconnect with Liesl, who’s training to become a nun. Korda wants Liesl to inherit his vast fortune, but she doesn’t approve his avaricious, back-stabbing ways (turns out lots of people want to kill him). The interactions between them are sharp and funny: del Toro sinks his teeth into the best role he’s had in years, and his cutthroat greed and one-percenter cluelessness find a humorous foil in Liesl, who’s not the typically meek and mild novitiate. 

The Phoenician Scheme is ridiculously complicated (it involves finding shoe boxes full of blueprints) but the important plot is Korda’s spiritual journey as Liesl continually challenges his win-at-all-costs mindset. Like most Anderson films, it’s highly stylized (people talk in rapid-fire patter out of a ‘30s screwball comedy) but the artifice makes the emotional moments surprising and thus more impactful. Visually dazzling, weird, yet also sublime, it’s a great introduction to Anderson’s unique, beguiling world.&nbsp;

 </figure>If Stanley Kubrick’s obsessively precise framing and detailed set design were combined with the quirky characterizations and lunatic unpredictability of the Coen Brothers, it might come close to explaining the aesthetic of director Wes Anderson. But what’s missing from that description is an underlying warmth and humanity that is special to Anderson.&nbsp;'The Phoenician Scheme' is an exemplar of his style, featuring oddball cameos from unexpected scene-stealers like Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, and Benedict Cumberbatch, plenty of absurdly perfect symmetrical compositions, lots of funny visual jokes in the background—and at its core, a genuinely moving relationship between the main characters: Benicio del Toro as ruthless mogul Zsa-zsa Korda and his daughter Liesl (Mia Threapleton). After a failed assassination attempt gives Korda a look at the afterlife, he takes Liesl on a trip to meet with various relatives and associates to complete some business chicanery called the Phoenician Scheme—but it’s also a pretext to reconnect with Liesl, who’s training to become a nun. Korda wants Liesl to inherit his vast fortune, but she doesn’t approve his avaricious, back-stabbing ways (turns out lots of people want to kill him). The interactions between them are sharp and funny: del Toro sinks his teeth into the best role he’s had in years, and his cutthroat greed and one-percenter cluelessness find a humorous foil in Liesl, who’s not the typically meek and mild novitiate. The Phoenician Scheme is ridiculously complicated (it involves finding shoe boxes full of blueprints) but the important plot is Korda’s spiritual journey as Liesl continually challenges his win-at-all-costs mindset. Like most Anderson films, it’s highly stylized (people talk in rapid-fire patter out of a ‘30s screwball comedy) but the artifice makes the emotional moments surprising and thus more impactful. Art Center Cinema showing three different films end of June and start of July

The Salina Police Department are currently seeking tips and informing the public about two suspects who allegedly 'jumped' a male victim.

According to the Salina Police Department, On Wednesday, May 7th, a male reported he was walking along the northside of Pump Mart on 1118 N. 9th, between 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. The man reported he was 'jumped' by two males. 

The victim described the suspects as Hispanic or Black. Police stated, the victim could not provide any other description.

A witness in the area later reported seeing a small red Chevy passenger car pull into the parking lot and two black males exit the back of the vehicle. The two males then began striking the victim before jumping back into the vehicle and leaving the area. 

The vehicle was also occupied by two females. The victim was treated at the hospital for facial injuries.

Surveillance video was recently obtained for the incident.&nbsp;

Shoppers are seeing record high beef prices at the grocery store. That’s in part because the number of cattle in the U.S. is at an all-time low, while consumer demand has remained strong.

In the past, ranchers used to worry whether people would eat beef.

That’s not a concern anymore, according to Mark Gardiner. Today, he said producers like himself are seeing the greatest demand in history.

“Beef has differentiated itself as the protein of choice, not only in the U.S., but worldwide,” he said.

The fourth-generation producer, who runs Gardiner Angus Ranch in southwest Kansas with his family, believes that’s largely because of the quality of beef consumers get today.

But even as beef prices hit record highs in May, demand does not appear to be slowing.

The average price of a pound of ground beef hit a record $5.98 in May, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s a 16% increase from a year before, and with a short supply of cattle, experts say they don’t expect prices to fall anytime soon.

The cattle inventory in the U.S. is at its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fb.org/market-intel/u-s-cattle-inventory-smallest-in-73-years" target="_blank">lowest since 1951</a>, according to USDA data.

Ranchers have shrunk their herds for several reasons; including inflation and the rising costs of caring for cattle. Drought throughout the Great Plains, where most of the country’s cattle are raised, also means higher feed costs for ranchers.

“So we are continuing to be very small and again, smaller than we intended to be,” said Derrell Peel, a livestock marketing specialist with Oklahoma State University Extension, to KOSU last February. “And that's gonna lead to growing incentives, I think, for the industry to try to rebuild and when we can, if Mother Nature lets us.”

Because producers have been seeing strong demand at high prices, Peel said they are in the driver’s seat in this market. Although high prices likely will encourage rebuilding herd sizes, he said producers have not responded so far.

When they do, it may shrink supply even further, as ranchers hold back cows to breed more calves.

“If you're not familiar with the beef industry, you don't turn this thing around rapidly,” Peel said. “Just the nature of cattle production is a slow process.”

Cortney Cowley, a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, said producers are looking at their input costs and looking at the prices for cattle to make decisions on whether to sell cattle or hold them back.

“And it’s really difficult to not sell right now at the historically high prices that ranchers are seeing,” Cowley said.

Because there are fewer cattle going through the system, Cowley said meatpackers at the wholesale level are paying more for cattle resulting in lower margins. Ultimately, those high prices get passed on to the consumers, because everyone else in the supply chain has had to pay more.

At the same time, Cowley said the U.S. consumes more beef than it produces — importing meat to make up the difference — which can contribute to higher prices.

“We actually have a trade deficit for beef right now … ,” Cowley said. “and with some of the trade policies that are in effect now, whenever you have to import more beef, that can be more expensive.”

Peel said while the beef industry hasn’t been directly affected yet, he expects it will be down the line.

“I mean, “the export markets are all messed up” is not a very technical term, but there's a lot of disruption and more importantly, a lot of uncertainty about those markets,” Peel said. “But those effects don't show up necessarily immediately, at least not to a great extent, but they will continue to build over time.”

Peel said he’s more concerned about the broader economy. While demand for beef is solid, he said if consumers face factors like unemployment, demand could be impacted at some point.

For the moment, beef producers like Gardiner are taking the markets in stride.

A few years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said producers had a difficult time because cattle could not get through the system while meat processing plants were shut down.

“So, it was frustrating to producers because the price that they were receiving was nowhere close to what they would see retail prices,” Gardiner said.

Currently, it’s a different story. He said producers are seeing record high prices as processors see the lows. Despite uncertainty over tariffs, Gardiner said producers are having a good moment.

“It's never been better in the beef industry, and I've been bullish my entire life,” he said, “But we have more opportunity today than any time in the history of American beef production.”

Beef prices are at an all-time high. Why it's gotten so expensive

Harvest was off to a rapid start in southwest Kansas on Thursday with temperatures topping out about 100 degrees. There will be more information available on how yields and quality will compare to average by the beginning of next week when reports start to come in.

In central Kansas, harvest came to a halt after Tuesday’s rainfall but will pick back up by the weekend with high winds and nearly triple digit temperatures in the forecast.

Derek Sawyer who farms in McPherson County reports that before Tuesday’s rain they were cutting wheat that was yielding 80 bushels per acre. But Tuesday brought the area 5 to 6 inches of rain, up to 10 inches in some places, and 80 mile per hour sustained winds. This took kernels out of the heads in many wheat fields. He estimates that they probably lost 25% of the yield potential. Test weights were good, but will no doubt decrease with the rain. Some fields are in standing water and may not be able to be harvested. While he should be over halfway done with harvest, Sawyer reports that he barely even got started, and won’t be able to get into even the fields with the least amount of rainfall until the weekend at the earliest. The creek is out of its banks and roads are flooded in the area.

Lee Scheufler who farms in Rice and Ellsworth counties reports that harvest began on June 10 and that yields were average up to 20 percent above average. They’ve had a couple rain delays, including Tuesday’s rainfall which ranged from 1.75 to 4 inches in the area, with localized flooding. He was able to find dry ground on Thursday and get back to harvest before the weekend. After the rains, test weight has decreased slightly but is still around average. He is only about 15 to 20 percent of the way done with harvest and has at least a week left.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas Wheat: 2025 Harvest day two

Working hard is an understatement for a Salina man. After 40 years of working with all of his heart, soul and might, Stewart Merrick has retired from work at the Smoky Hill Health and Rehabilitation center.&nbsp;

Originally from Pennsylvania, moved to Kansas City when he was 2, to&nbsp;Belleville, then to Salina, Merrick is known for his never ending hard-working spirit, attitude and love for people. His journey of service work has been one that is selfless, hardly taking any days off and without any excuses.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, June 19th Merrick retired from the&nbsp;Smoky Hill Health and Rehabilitation center as a Floor Technician after 40 years. His employees and residents always spoke highly of him and even tears ran down from his supervisor's face, Tracey Jordan.

"I have been blessed to work alongside Stewart," said Jordan (as she was in tears). "He never once disrespected me, we worked great together, he is very reliable and was always loyal and dedicated. I see him as a brother."

Jordan worked alongside Merrick for 30 years and comments that he would 'come in at nights and always did the little things right.'

Merrick was known for his work ethic and genuine love for others. Before Merrick applied for the rehabilitation center, he lived with his father at a motel that his dad owned, while doing construction work on the side. Merrick stated he started doing construction/concrete work when was in junior high. His father ended up selling the motel and Merrick then moved to Salina, where his journey at the rehab center started.

Merrick began his work at the rehab center by cleaning floors for a part-time position. However, Merrick stated he worked around 80-100 hours every two weeks. He also accepted a part-time job where he cleaned at the old Salina Journal location.&nbsp;

After countless hours of service work at the Journal and the rehab center, Merrick commented that his physical health started to decline. He realized he was experiencing some heart complications and was diagnosed with Afib (Atrial Fibrillation). Merrick joined a group where they assisted people with Afib and also joined a group with people that were diagnosed with diabetes. Merrick stated that doctors even told him to that he needed to 'slack off' from working so hard. But despite his health complications, Merrick still had the will to work.

He talked about how his father taught him how to work and that it is difficult for him to stop from working hard.

"That is just how I was taught how to work and I can probably still outdue 20 year olds," said Merrick. "When you were taught how to work, it is hard to retrain yourself to stop working so hard."

When Merrick started working full-time at the rehab center, he continued to clean floors on top of, windows, dining rooms, basement and the rest of the building.&nbsp;

Working for retirees and others is something that Merrick was never new to before working at the Smoky Hill Health and Rehabilitation center. He commented how he did alot of work for retirees during his time in Belleville and started to grow a love for service work before coming to Salina.

"Here (Salina) some of the residents do not like being here, but they have to be, so you got to make them feel glad and keep them from not getting depressed," said Merrick. "I love it here, I love the residents, I have fun and love to keep them laughing."

He talks about how when one of the residents at the rehab center passes away, that he 'remembers the memories they made.' Merrick's love for people was what allowed him to do the quality of work he put in daily, instead of doing it solely for a paycheck.

"Work because you want to work and do it for the love of the of the people," said Merrick. "It is not that hard to work and nowadays kids want do it for a paycheck, but they do not want to work. It is good feeling for me to work for these people here."

Merrick talked about how he will still visit residents at the rehab center by giving them cards that his mother makes. He also said he is willing to voluntarily work at the rehab center if someone is taking days off, so they are not short of staff.

His wife, Barb Merrick also works at the rehab center as a kitchen&nbsp;dietary aide and has done so for 39 years (40 years in October). Merrick met Barb at the rehab center before they got married in 1988. Stewart started working at the rehab center in June of 1985 and Barb started in October that same year.

"It is going to be alot different now that I am retired," said Merrick. "My body says it is time."

Merrick will be spending time with his dog 'Chewie,' as he will continue to do work around his house.

He has missed only about 4 months total of work through his 40 years at the Smoky Hill Health and Rehabilitation center.

After 40 years of working with all of his heart, soul and might, Stewart Merrick has retired from work at the Smoky Hill Health and Rehabilitation center.&nbsp;Originally from Pennsylvania, moved to Kansas City when he was 2, to&nbsp;Belleville, then to Salina, Merrick is known for his never ending hard-working spirit, attitude and love for people. His journey of service work has been one that is selfless, hardly taking any days off and without any excuses.&nbsp;On Tuesday, June 19th Merrick retired from the&nbsp;Smoky Hill Health and Rehabilitation center as a Floor Technician after 40 years. His employees and residents always spoke highly of him and even tears ran down from his supervisor's face, Tracey Jordan."I have been blessed to work alongside Stewart," said Jordan (as she was in tears). "He never once disrespected me, we worked great together, he is very reliable and was always loyal and dedicated. I see him as a brother."Jordan worked alongside Merrick for 30 years and comments that he would 'come in at nights and always did the little things right.'<h2>Work ethic and genuine love for others</h2>Merrick was known for his work ethic and genuine love for others. Before Merrick applied for the rehabilitation center, he lived with his father at a motel that his dad owned, while doing construction work on the side. Merrick stated he started doing construction/concrete work when was in junior high. His father ended up selling the motel and Merrick then moved to Salina, where his journey at the rehab center started.Merrick began his work at the rehab center by cleaning floors for a part-time position. However, Merrick stated he worked around 80-100 hours every two weeks. He also accepted a part-time job where he cleaned at the old Salina Journal location.&nbsp;After countless hours of service work at the Journal and the rehab center, Merrick commented that his physical health started to decline. He realized he was experiencing some heart complications and was diagnosed with Afib (Atrial Fibrillation). Salina man retires from service work after 40 years of 'diligence and genuine love for others'

ABILENE - Many upcoming events are happening in Abilene, KS before the month ends and here is a look at what will occur.

This Saturday, June 21st at 6:00 pm&nbsp;the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad (ASVRR) will take a trip to Enterprise, KS on the Limited train for a two-hour train ride. ASVRR encourages those wanting to participate to join them for home cooking that will include a choice of roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, or marinated baked chicken breast in white wine cream sauce and mashed potatoes.&nbsp;Both entrees come with a seasoned vegetable medley, dinner rolls, side salad and for dessert, a key lime pie square. Iced tea and water accompany your meal, prepared by Amanda Collins of Amanda’s Bakery and Bistro in Abilene.

 </figure>The Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene has announced the opening of a temporary exhibit dedicated to honoring the contributions of American veterans from varied backgrounds and experiences. "WE THE PEOPLE: Portraits of Veterans in America" is now on display in the Museum Special Gallery located on&nbsp;200 SE. 4th St.&nbsp;through December 2025.According to the Museum, this showcase features '50 stunning large-scale watercolor portraits' by internationally acclaimed artist from Charleston, SC, Mary Whyte. Among the featured "hidden heroes" are a Kansas welder, a Missouri dairy farmer, a Texas construction worker and a Pennsylvania science teacher. This exhibit is meant to celebrate the individual stories of its featured veterans, but also means to solidify the museum's original purpose and President Eisenhower's commitment to honoring the sacrifices and achievements of our veterans."This exhibit perfectly aligns with year's programming theme, 'Saluting our Veterans,' but also serves as a pivotal bridge toward the celebration of America's 250th birthday next year," says Eisenhower Library Director Todd Arrington.
