TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.3% in August. This is an increase from 3.2% in July and an increase from 2.6% in August 2023, according to a media release.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment was unchanged from July. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 3,500 over the month, while government increased by 3,500.

The unemployment rate in Saline County remained at 3.5 percent from July to August.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dickinson County saw their jobless rate increase from 4.3 to 6 percent in August.

“Estimates for nominal hourly earnings in the private sector have increased in Kansas,” said labor economist, Emilie

Doerksen. “In August nominal earnings growth exceeded inflation rates, resulting in a 2.6% increase in real hourly earnings compared to last year.”

Since August 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 20,000. Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 21

CLOUD COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Friday in Cloud County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Chevy Tracker driven by&nbsp;Hayden, Brandon L&nbsp;Hayden, 22, Beloit, was westbound on U.S. 24 just west of 110th Road. The SUV traveled left of center and the driver overcorrected.&nbsp; The vehicle entered the north ditch, struck an embankment and and rolled onto its top.

EMS transported&nbsp;Hayden to&nbsp; Bryan Memorial Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized after SUV rollover accident

SALINE COUNTY —Strong winds and storms swept across Kansas Friday causing hazardous conditions on the roadways. 

Kansas Highway Patrol Master Trooper Van Buren responded to a semi that was blown over on Interstate 70 near the Brookville/Tescott exit in Saline County, according to a social media report.

 Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. According to KHP trooper Ben Gardner, "This is a reminder of how quickly weather can impact driving. If you’re traveling, please slow down and be cautious in windy conditions. Stay safe, Kansas."

Kansas weather can be tough on the trees in our local landscapes. Many local homeowners, particularly those who lost trees during the late July windstorm that hit Salina, are now considering replacements. Early fall is an ideal time to plant new trees.

One advantage of fall planting is that soil temperatures are warmer, encouraging quicker root growth compared to the cooler spring soils. Trees planted in the fall can establish themselves more quickly, making them better prepared for the heat stress of the following summer.

Regardless of when a tree is planted, it is essential to follow proper planting procedures to give trees the best chance of survival. Many tree deaths can be attributed to mistakes made during the planting process.

Planting at the right time is important. Evergreen trees and shrubs should be planted sooner rather than later in the fall, as they need 5-6 weeks to establish before the first killing frost. Deciduous trees, which lose their leaves, can be planted later, but planting earlier allows them to benefit from warmer soil temperatures.

Avoid planting trees too deep. A common mistake is planting trees too deep, which can cause long-term root problems. The planting hole should be dug two to three times wider than the rootball, but slightly shallower than the rootball itself. The first root flare should be at ground level.

Containerized trees often have circling roots, which can cause girdling, where roots grow around and damage the trunk. These roots should be pruned or teased apart during planting to prevent future issues.

It’s important to use the original soil to backfill the planting hole. Avoid adding compost or other organic materials to the soil, as amending only the planting hole can disrupt water movement and slow root establishment.

Mulching the root zone with 2-4 inches of organic mulch helps protect the tree and promotes its establishment. However, the mulch should be kept away from the trunk to prevent disease and rodent damage.

Using tree wraps or guards on newly planted trees can help prevent cracking caused by winter temperature fluctuations. Additionally, staking may be necessary for taller or leggy trees.

Consistent watering is critical for newly planted trees. Regular watering should continue throughout the year, even during winter on warm days. The tree should be watered when the rootball begins to dry out, but overwatering should be avoided.

KSRE — Early Fall a prime time to plant trees

Memorial Health System’s Heartland Health Care Clinic (HHCC) location in Herington continues to make progress toward serving all patients in the Tri-County area,&nbsp;thanks to some assistance from&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;Senator Roger Marshall’s Salina office.&nbsp;

After months of building and planning HHCC – Herington, located at 18 N Broadway, was able to open its doors to patients on May 13, 2024. &nbsp; “Opening a healthcare clinic is a lengthy process, and it’s not&nbsp;always&nbsp;easy to communicate those steps with the general public. &nbsp;We have tried to provide updates that are small wins for us, but to the patients who are waiting for healthcare, those wins mean very little if they can’t get the care they need,” said Harold Courtois, CEO of Memorial Health System (MHS). &nbsp;

A week after the abrupt closing of the Herington Hospital in October of 2023, MHS was in Herington seeking opportunities to help keep some form of healthcare in that area for the residents, and by December, renovations began on a building that would serve as the new clinic. &nbsp;

Although the doors officially opened on May 13, HHCC-Herington was unable to serve a majority of the patients in that area. &nbsp; “We were only able to see patients with Blue Cross Blue&nbsp;Shield Kansas, Allegiance, MultiPlan, and Aetna&nbsp;Commercial&nbsp;plans,” stated Karysa Reyer, Director of Clinic Operations. &nbsp;“Unfortunately, that didn’t help the community very much,&nbsp;as the majority of the population held Medicare and Medicaid, so we started a call-back list, ensuring those patients that we would get them called back just as soon as we were able to accept those insurance plans.”

MHS held the grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 28, although the wait for credentialing was still in full effect. “As time continued to pass,&nbsp;and the list continued to reach over a hundred patients, we decided to ask for some help,” said Reyer. &nbsp;“Senator Roger Marshall’s staff in the Salina office were instrumental in helping to get some forward movement with the credentialing process so that we could start seeing more patients. &nbsp;We seriously cannot thank them enough for their assistance,&nbsp;and we are so excited to share some good news with the Herington community!”

“I applaud Memorial Health&nbsp;System&nbsp;for stepping up to fill the healthcare needs of the&nbsp;Herington&nbsp;community,” said U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. “Since coming to&nbsp;Congress, I have&nbsp;prioritized supporting our rural healthcare providers and efforts&nbsp;like this are one of many&nbsp;ways&nbsp;my office can help our rural providers and ensure all Kansans&nbsp;have&nbsp;access to basic&nbsp;healthcare&nbsp;services.”

Chapman Police Department On Monday September 16 the Chapman Police Department received several reports that numerous vehicle burglaries occurred, and valuables were taken in the overnight hours. A vehicle was also reported stolen that night.

One of the tools used in the investigation was the new LPR (License Plate Reader) system that the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office placed within the city limits.

With the use of the LPR system, the stolen vehicle was seen entering Junction City, but never left Junction City Police Department was notified and a short time later, the vehicle was located by Junction City Police Officers.&nbsp; During the investigation using the LPR system, other valuable information was located in connection to these crimes.

The early indications into this investigation, we feel that these crimes were not committed by anyone local. We want to try and clear up any rumors that may be circulating on social media. This is still an ongoing investigation. On Friday, August 30, 2024, at about 12:09 PM, a subject reported they parked their 2016 Isuzu Box Truck at 601 S. Broadway, Salina, Kansas. The truck was parked along the east side of the building next to several bay doors. The subject later received a GPS alert the truck was turned on at 2:50 PM on August 30, 2024.

When the subject returned to the trucks location on August 31, 2024, the truck had been moved across the parking lot. The steering column had been disassembled and wires cut.

The truck was valued at $15,000. It was later determined the suspect had gone through another vehicle on the property but no items were taken from the second vehicle.

Surveillance video from the business showed a Black male wearing a green t-shirt, dark shorts, carrying a hammer. The male appears to be shorter in stature, with a slim build.

The male checks doors located at the business.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 20

HAVEN, Kan. — The economic outlook on rural main street is not good, according to a survey released Thursday from Creighton University. 

"This is a September survey of bank CEOs and rural areas of ten states including Kansas," said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss. "The overall number was down from last month and last month was not good. In fact, the number indexed 50 as growth neutral. This is well below growth neutral. In fact, back to pandemic levels when we were back in May of 2020. The agricultural sector is definitely limping along and that's what we're seeing. Their projections are 40% of the farmers are into negative income territory this year, 2024."

There are major headwinds for the grain markets in particular.

"There is global economic weakness and excess supplies," Goss said. "We've got a lot of supply out there. It's been a good year for yields, but not good in terms of prices. We need to see some of those. We need to see the prices rebound. Corn price is hovering around $4 a bushel. That's below break-even for a lot of farmers out there."

Also, the overall value of land is going down, too.

"We asked the bankers about going forward, and they, on average, expect about a 5.2% reduction in farmland prices predicted over the next year," Goss said. "We even had a high proportion, that would be one-fourth of the bankers, one-fourth expect the farmland prices to come down by 10 to 20%. Hopefully that doesn't hit, but that's pretty negative there when we look at the bankers."

A lot of the collateral for loans made to farmers is predicated on the land value they hold, so reduction in those values can give them less borrowing power.

Rural Mainstreet struggling, survey says

When the final fields are cut, the trucks empty, the bins full and the combines cleaned out, Kansas wheat farmers breathe a quick sigh of relief that harvest season is complete. But for Kathy Brower, lab manager for Grain Craft’s Innovation and Quality Lab, harvest is just the start of her busy season as she takes samples from those farmers and puts them to the test for how that wheat will perform in making a consistently good loaf of bread.&nbsp;

“Grain Craft leads by example through educating their customers about wheat quality while communicating those needs back to wheat farmers and researchers,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice-president of research and operations, who interviewed Brower for an episode of the organization’s “Wheat’s On Your Mind” podcast. “That dialogue supports the advancement of wheat quality for the entire supply chain.”

Grain Craft is the largest independent flour miller in the United States. The company has longstanding relationships with Kansas Wheat and Kansas State University. So when it came time in 2021 to establish a new laboratory focused on varietal research, there was little doubt an ideal location would be inside the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center on K-State’s north campus. Today, Grain Craft has 12 mills in the United States and the lab in Manhattan does the analysis for quite a few of them, especially for hard wheats destined for the bread industry.&nbsp;

And who better to manage the lab than Brower, the daughter of a fifth-generation wheat farmer and K-State food science graduate with the experience needed to connect the dots between the wheat developed by breeding programs, the varieties planted each year and the final end-use quality of those kernels.&nbsp;

“Having us here at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, we can bring in various tour groups, even famous football coaches like Bill Snyder,” Brower said. “I really love making that connection with people. We’ve even had some of the farmers come in and they’ve got to see their specific variety baked out in our process. It’s a tremendous opportunity to put those connections together.”&nbsp;

While the lab’s work is never truly complete, their new crop testing starts as soon as producers begin wheat harvest. In mid-June, a company courier starts collecting samples from throughout the region, which are brought into the lab and tested. Mills, breeding programs and even individual farmers also send in samples. With kernels in hand, testing begins in the Grain Craft laboratory’s milling facility, where kernels are tempered, cleaned, processed and ground.&nbsp;

The resulting flour moves into the company’s flour analysis lab. Grain samples are run through near infrared imaging (NIR), which measures both protein content and initial moisture ash - a common quality factor requested by millers.&nbsp;

“Ash is the mineral left behind after you’ve burned off all the carbohydrates and all the protein,” Brower said. “If you have that outer layer of the kernel, that outer layer contains a lot of mineral content in it. When we’re putting something through the mill - grinding - that part is always going to be present within the flour itself. If we know our ash content, we can get a good idea of how well we’re grinding.”

After initial testing, it is time to make some bread dough. Using a farinograph - a piece of equipment that looks like a miniature mixing bowl with two paddles inside - the flour is mixed with water. The machine then turns the paddles, and the resulting mixture generates torque against those paddles, which measures water absorption and helps determine peak development time.&nbsp;

If dough breaks down after a certain amount of mixing time, it becomes very sticky and very soft and is virtually impossible to remove from the mixer. As a result, the goal of a baking process is to mix the dough to a nice, developed state where it will still retain gas throughout baking.&nbsp;

“From a baker’s standpoint, the baker is wanting to know - how much water can I potentially put into this flour? And then what is the mixability of it? How strong is it going to be? How long am I going to be able to mix it out?” Brower explained. “The farinograph is one piece of equipment that can allow us to give a heads up to those bakeries as well as in our own test baking scenario as to what the performance of that flour is going to be.”

After flour analysis, a sponge and dough process is used to test how the flour will turn into bread. Lab technicians take about 70 percent of the flour and mix it with yeast and water. The mix is put into a three-and-a-half-hour fermentation process, resulting in the “sponge” that can be tested - is it too soft? A little overhydrated? Underhydrated, dry and shaggy? Or just right?

“If you’re running a fermentation process, it gives you a really good look at that initial stability of a flour,” Brower said. “It also gives us a way to judge if we hit the correct absorption.”&nbsp;

After the sponge is tested, it’s time to add back in the remaining 30 percent of the flour, add shortening, sugar and salt and bring that back as a final dough. Then it is time to make a loaf of bread.&nbsp;

In a commercial bakery, loaves are made in an assembly line, not one at a time like at home. In a commercial setting, after bread leaves the mixing bowl, it must go through a sheeting process - a set of rollers that takes out air pockets and makes a smooth sheet of dough - and then divided and molded into individual loaves. This process puts stress on the dough, meaning it needs to be strong enough to maintain its shape and texture. The dough cannot mix and fall apart, or it messes up everything else down the line before it ever gets into an oven. All this to say, it requires high protein quality, not just content, to provide that strength.&nbsp;

“If you’re bulking up for weight training or something similar, you have to have that protein coming in so you can retain your strength,” Brower said. “And it’s very much the same with flour.”&nbsp;

Using a similar process, albeit on a smaller scale, lab technicians divide, sheet and mold the dough into loaves. From there, the dough is put in a pan, goes through a 60-minute proof time and then placed in the oven. Once the loaves are fully baked, they are cooled overnight and evaluated the next morning.&nbsp;

That evaluation includes measuring loaf volume and then slicing the bread to look at the texture of the crumb - important determinants of flour strength and how well it would perform in a commercial setting.&nbsp;

“We are trying to mimic that process as closely as we can because we want to simulate what they would potentially see in their system,” Brower said.&nbsp;

This whole process is repeated with every sample that comes into the lab - about 1,300 samples last year. The lab shares the results with mills as far away as Los Angeles, the Kansas farmers who sent in samples and university breeding programs - like K-State. The participation of wheat breeders is essential, especially since Grain Craft runs a preferred variety program for farmers.&nbsp;

“We couldn’t run a program like a preferred variety program without the cooperation from the breeders,” Brower said. “It’s so important that we have those samples coming in year after year because varieties are changing constantly. If those breeding programs are willing to work with us, it really does help us make decisions for what can go onto that preferred list.”

“It’s very important that those perform well for the farmers. We want to make sure that they have really good yield, quality, drought tolerance and pest resistance and all those things built in that are going to make it so the farmer can actually profit. But we also want to make sure that the quality is going to work out for our bakers.”

All this to say, it requires high protein quality, not just content, to provide that strength.&nbsp;“If you’re bulking up for weight training or something similar, you have to have that protein coming in so you can retain your strength,” Brower said. “And it’s very much the same with flour.”&nbsp;Using a similar process, albeit on a smaller scale, lab technicians divide, sheet and mold the dough into loaves. From there, the dough is put in a pan, goes through a 60-minute proof time and then placed in the oven. Once the loaves are fully baked, they are cooled overnight and evaluated the next morning.&nbsp;That evaluation includes measuring loaf volume and then slicing the bread to look at the texture of the crumb - important determinants of flour strength and how well it would perform in a commercial setting.&nbsp;“We are trying to mimic that process as closely as we can because we want to simulate what they would potentially see in their system,” Brower said.&nbsp;This whole process is repeated with every sample that comes into the lab - about 1,300 samples last year. The lab shares the results with mills as far away as Los Angeles, the Kansas farmers who sent in samples and university breeding programs - like K-State. The participation of wheat breeders is essential, especially since Grain Craft runs a preferred variety program for farmers.&nbsp;“We couldn’t run a program like a preferred variety program without the cooperation from the breeders,” Brower said. “It’s so important that we have those samples coming in year after year because varieties are changing constantly. If those breeding programs are willing to work with us, it really does help us make decisions for what can go onto that preferred list.”“It’s very important that those perform well for the farmers. We want to make sure that they have really good yield, quality, drought tolerance and pest resistance and all those things built in that are going to make it so the farmer can actually profit. Bethany College is excited to announce Dan Lolli, the Chief Operating Officer for Sporting Kansas City, as the distinguished speaker for this year's Carl F. and Catherine Herman Mauney Distinguished Lectureship Series in Economics and Business. Lolli's lecture, titled "FIFA World Cup 2026: The Sport is a Game, The Business is Not," will be held on October 24, 2024, at 1 p.m. in Burnett Center.

Dan Lolli, a seasoned leader in Major League Soccer, has played a crucial role in the evolution of Sporting Kansas City. With over 16 years in the sport, he has overseen the development of world-class facilities and contributed significantly to Kansas City's successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2026. His previous roles include managing the Columbus Crew's stadium and leading FC Cincinnati's transition to its new TQL Stadium, the Best Venue of 2022.

While on campus, Lolli will be a guest lecturer in business and economics classes, giving Bethany students a unique opportunity to ask questions and discuss various marketing and business management topics.

In addition to his lectures, attendees are invited to a reception with Lolli on October 23, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in the Sandzén Gallery. This event, open to faculty, staff, alums, and the community, offers a unique opportunity to engage with Lolli in a more informal setting.

Residents and visitors are gearing up for the Gypsum Flea Market and town-wide flea market and garage sale event this Friday and Saturday. Gypsum, Kansas will be the place to find great bargains and visit one of Kansas' hidden gem communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Flea Market, located near Exit 14, 512 Maple St, Gypsum, will feature at least six vendors offering a diverse selection of items, including housewares, furniture, clothing, and model cars. 

Hours for the Flea Market are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Additionally, K4 Garage is hosting its own sales nearby.

One of the local highlights is COOP’s 5% discount on dog food, along with soft drinks available for purchase during the event. For those with a sweet tooth, across from the Flea Market, vendors will be offering homemade goodies such as brownies, cinnamon rolls, and muffins.

The Gypsum Flea Market isn't the only sale going on. Travel the streets of Gypsum to discover other local garage sales. Parking is available along the street near the market and sales locations.

Gypsum’s sense of community and small-town charm will be on full display this weekend. Allison Lewis, a resident of Gypsum said she moved to town two years ago and loves the community. 

"It's a really a wholesome community. We really care about our fellow community members," Lewis said. "We've done multiple benefits for people in community who are struggling. We're all friendly.&nbsp; I love living here. It's so quiet people don't bother you. It's small town living, and I love it."

On Wednesday Tarik Skubal allowed just three hits over five innings for his 17th win as the streaking Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 to move within a half game of a playoff spot with 10 games remaining.

Riley Greene hit a go-ahead home run as the Tigers won their fourth straight and ninth in the last 11 games. With the series sweep, Detroit won for the 25th time in 35 games to move within a half game of Minnesota for the third AL wild-card spot.

The Royals still hold a game and a half lead over the Twins but with Detroit in hot pursuit, will need to turn things around in their final nine games.

Wednesday was a great day for Kansas Wesleyan who opened conference play in three sports with a trio of big wins.

For the Coyote volleyball team that came in the form of a triangular sweep, defeating Mission and Sterling in three sets back to back,

Meanwhile on the pitch, the Coyote women’s soccer team collected their first win, shutting out York 2-0 in the conference opener.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 19

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for Sundowner West Mobile Home Park - public water supply system located in Saline County. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a broken water line resulting in low pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory. &nbsp;

Laboratory testing samples collected from the Sundowner West Mobile Home Park indicated no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.   &nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a Boil Water Advisory for the&nbsp;Sundowner&nbsp;West Mobile Home Park public water supply system located in Saline County.&nbsp;

According to a release from the KDHE customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.

If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

According to Sundowner residents, Waterwise Enterprises has been sending out updates to residents, not Scott Kolling who owns the water rights at Sundowner.

The advisory took effect on September 14 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of water line break resulting in low pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.

Sundowner was placed under a do-not-drink advisory back in Aug. for elevated manganese levels in the water.&nbsp;

Manganese is currently unregulated at the state level according to the KDHE, but federal health advisory limits do apply. 

Too much manganese can increase the risk of health problems, the KDHE said in its Aug. 29 release, particularly for infants under 6 months old. Infants are more at risk than older children and adults because their brains and bodies are quickly developing. Formula-fed infants get enough manganese from formula to meet their dietary needs. Infants exposed to manganese over 300 ug/L may experience learning or behavioral problems.

On Aug. 29 the KDHE advised residents to not boil or freeze the water. The release said the following, "Boiling, freezing, or letting water stand does not reduce manganese. Boiling can increase levels of manganese because manganese remains behind when the water evaporates."

Michelle Weis, Saline County Emergency Management director said The KDHE conducted water tests in late August which revealed manganese levels below health advisory limits, making it safe to boil.

Salina Post is in contact with residents at Sundowner and will update this story as new information becomes available.&nbsp;

For consumer information please visit KDHE’s PWS Consumer Information webpage:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/468/Consumer-Information-Regarding-a-Disrupt?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery" target="_blank">kdhe.ks.gov/waterdisruption</a>.&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a Boil Water Advisory for the&nbsp;Sundowner&nbsp;West Mobile Home Park public water supply system located in Saline County.&nbsp;According to a release from the KDHE customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water. Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.According to Sundowner residents, Waterwise Enterprises has been sending out updates to residents, not Scott Kolling who owns the water rights at Sundowner.The advisory took effect on September 14 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of water line break resulting in low pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.Sundowner was placed under a do-not-drink advisory back in Aug. for elevated manganese levels in the water.&nbsp;Manganese is currently unregulated at the state level according to the KDHE, but federal health advisory limits do apply. Too much manganese can increase the risk of health problems, the KDHE said in its Aug. 29 release, particularly for infants under 6 months old. Infants are more at risk than older children and adults because their brains and bodies are quickly developing. Formula-fed infants get enough manganese from formula to meet their dietary needs. Infants exposed to manganese over 300 ug/L may experience learning or behavioral problems.On Aug. 29 the KDHE advised residents to not boil or freeze the water. The release said the following, "Boiling, freezing, or letting water stand does not reduce manganese. Boiling can increase levels of manganese because manganese remains behind when the water evaporates."Michelle Weis, Saline County Emergency Management director said The KDHE conducted water tests in late August which revealed manganese levels below health advisory limits, making it safe to boil.Salina Post is in contact with residents at Sundowner and will update this story as new information becomes available.&nbsp;
