On this day, donations to any of the 78 participating charities will be matched up to 50 percent, according to information from the Greater Salina Community Foundation. The list of participating charities can be found online at <a href="http://www.matchmadnessgscf.org">www.matchmadnessgscf.org</a>.

Since the event’s inception in 2012, 4,660 donors contributed a record-breaking total of $1,780,029 to 88 charities. The events match and bonus grants total $724,676 and the total benefit exceeds $2.5 million in total impact to the community, GSCF noted in a news release.

All donations made on March 25 will go to each charity’s endowed fund held at the Greater Salina Community Foundation. These funds are permanently invested to produce a steady stream of income charities can count on every year, which eases the pressure to raise annual funds.

Plus, every gift to a nonprofit’s endowed fund will be matched (proportionally, up to 50 percent) with a cash grant that the charity can access immediately to meet immediate needs. This year, there are $200,000 in matching funds, thanks to the generosity of private donors.

“This event is a win-win for everyone, and a great example of community collaboration. Donations of all sizes are pooled together to provide long-term support for our charities, and the match given can be used instantly by the charities to meet urgent needs,” said Jessica Martin, GSCF executive director.

According to information from GSCF, donors can give in the following three ways.

Competition starts at 4 p.m. and can be viewed on Facebook Live.

•Livestreamed BE Wealth Half-Court Shot for Charity, where nonprofit representatives will attempt to make a shot from half-court, and the winner will receive an extra $1,000 for their organization. Competition starts at 4 p.m. and can be viewed on Facebook Live.

•Food trucks, including Saddle Jack’s BBQ and Food by Bonnie, will be serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside of the Salina Fieldhouse.

The University of Kansas (KU) Alumni Association and KU Endowment recently honored Kansas high school seniors for their academic excellence and achievement. Kansas students ranking in the top 10 percent of their class received the honor.

The KU Alumni Association delivered distinctive Kansas Honor Scholar medallions, certificates, and letters of recognition to Central and South high schools for the 52 students.

Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, KU honored the scholars virtually this year. 52 USD 305 seniors named Kansas Honor Scholars

Kansas Wesleyan University’s nursing program has been moved to full approval by the Kansas State Board of Nursing (KSBN), following a vote taken by the board Wednesday morning. 

The vote gives KWU’s program full accreditation and approval, without conditions, from all necessary governing bodies effective immediately.

“Wednesday’s vote completed a journey that has lasted seven years,” said Janeane Houchin, KWU’s director of nursing education. “The faith that so many have shown in this program was rewarded once again today. We are so thankful for the community-wide support, hard work and investment that has helped us get to this point. The future is incredibly bright for our program!”

KWU’s nursing program has been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) since April of 2018. The program’s $5 million Nursing Education Center opened in January.&nbsp;

The money comes from the University’s 2019 settlement with the FTC, when the FTC charged the school with using deceptive ads to attract students. <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2019/12/ftc-obtains-record-191-million-settlement-university-phoenix">According to the FTC</a>, the ads gave the false impression that the University worked with companies like AT&amp;T, Yahoo!, and Microsoft to create job opportunities for students and to shape its programs for the jobs. (Just to be clear: they didn’t.)

These payments are going to students who did not already get their debt cancelled by the University of Phoenix as part of the settlement. These students also meet these requirements:

●They first enrolled in an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program at the University of Phoenix between October 15, 2012 and December 31, 2016;

●They paid more than $5,000 to the University (using cash, student loans, military benefits, or a combination);

●They did not object when the University of Phoenix sent them a notice asking if it could give their information to the FTC.&nbsp;

The average payment is $337. Most students will get a check in the mail. It’ll come from the FTC’s refund administrator, Rust Consulting. The checks will expire after 90 days, on June 22, 2021. But about 700 students will get <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/cases-proceedings/refunds/refund-programs-frequently-asked-questions">payment through PayPal</a>. The FTC will send an email to people who will get PayPal payments before PayPal sends the payment. Those payments will be available for 30 days, until April 22, 2021. Local, area students named to Blue Key at K-State

Salina Police are looking for a man wanted on multiple requested charges, including attempted first degree murder.

According to information released this morning, Salina Police Department (SPD) officers were sent to the 200 block of South College Avenue on Saturday in regard to a domestic violence call. Officers spoke to a 29-year-old Salina woman who reported being the victim of domestic violence related crimes.

The suspect in this case, Brandon Lambert, had left the area as officers arrived on scene.

According to SPD, "an affidavit was submitted to the Saline County Attorney’s Office, and an Arrest Warrant was issued by the Saline County District Court for Lambert for the following charges: Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Domestic Violence Battery, Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Intimidation of a Witness, Criminal Threat, Criminal Damage to Property, Violation of Protection Order, and Harassment by Telecommunication Device."

Lambert, 34, is described as being 5'7", weighing 204 pounds, and having brown hair and blue eyes. Lambert has previous contacts within Dickinson, Riley, and Saline counties, and has also been known to drive tractor-trailer rigs in the north-central region of Kansas for Lambert Trucking (Kansas Transport Company), operating under USDOT Number 832682 and MC Number 736568, SPD noted.

SPD looking for attempted 1st degree murder suspect

When I lived in the city, spring was not my favorite season. Summer is filled with warm sunny days inspiring vacations or breaks from reality that provide much needed rest and relaxation. Fall’s brisk days and chilly nights are the perfect setting for football games, spooky fun and feasting at Thanksgiving. Winter has some big headliners with the holiday season up front and enough predictability in cold weather that people either embrace it as a wonderland or avoid it at all costs. But spring always felt like it sneaks up on you with its beginning somewhere between the appearance of a groundhog, leprechaun and the Easter Bunny. It is often the muddy aftermath of a fading winter wonderland. It matches fall’s temperatures but not its ambiance. Then before you know it, summer is creeping in to outshine it with its unofficial launch party on Memorial Day. Since moving back to a farm, my perspective has shifted, and spring feels completely different in this more flattering light. Spring sneaking up doesn’t seems so bad when you realize that practically overnight a dull brown, lifeless field turns into lush green, thriving wheat. New baby calves and lambs can be seen frolicking through mud puddles and exploring the world around them. Instead of holding a welcome party for summer, we hope for rain on Memorial Day to water the crops and maybe give us a little break between planting and harvest. It is a time of new life and growth. Hidden flower bulbs make it feel like the earth is awakening with their colorful appearance. Buds forming on trees and bushes begin to flower in a beautiful promise of the fruit they will bear. The air comes alive with the sounds of wildlife and insects returning to their natural patterns. The freshness of spring brings an enthusiasm for hard work. Gardeners who spent the winter dreaming cannot wait to dig in and begin new projects. Farmers filled with belief work long into the night planting the seeds that will eventually make harvest possible. Warmer days instinctually make people want to it throw open the windows and clean away the staleness of the past.

Staleness of the past has accumulated over this past year. We have been stuck in our homes with little escape during the pandemic that monopolized our minds, altered our lives and sapped much of our energy.

The first day of spring this year caught me by surprise like always, but this year’s surprise felt sweeter. It made it real that it has been a year since we first went into lockdown. A year of social distancing, mask wearing and unthinkable loss for our country. A year of rapid development and deployment of a vaccine that is helping to curb our infection rates. The arrival of spring feels like the fresh start we have been desperately waiting for. Spring has brought with it a lightness of spirit that makes it feel OK to dream again. That someday soon we will be able to ditch the masks, hug our loved ones and make real live plans. Take advantage of this uniquely momentous spring to clear away the staleness of the past, plant seeds of hope for the future, and embrace a new life and the growth all around you.

INSIGHT: A spring like no other

MANHATTAN — The&nbsp;<a href="https://beach.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University has put two and two together to offer a virtual exhibition for kids and animal lovers of all ages. The museum's "Two by Two: Animal Pairs" opens online March 30&nbsp; at&nbsp;<a href="https://beach.k-state.edu/explore/" target="_blank">beach.k-state.edu/explore</a>, with a gallery exhibition planned for June 15 through Dec. 18.

This exhibition features unique pairings of animals from the museum's permanent collection, ranging from Pueblo pottery to farm animals by regional and international artists. Part of the museum's annual collaboration with the Manhattan Public Library, "Two by Two: Animal Pairs" complements the American Library Association's summer 2021 theme "Tales and Tails." Animals have long been the subject of myths, legends, histories and art. Noah loads his ark with creatures, two by two, before the great Biblical flood. Animalistic deities populate the ancient world, from the Egyptian god Horus with the head of a falcon to the Greek god Zeus who visits Earth as a swan. In Native American legends, animals personify spirits such as the turtle who represents Mother Earth. Artworks in "Two by Two: Animal Pairs" picture such storied animals as well as farm animals, pets and circus performers. The images provide a chance to learn more about world cultures, literature and science. The exhibition also offers related programming for area schools and the museum's summer&nbsp;<a href="https://beach.k-state.edu/participate/classes/" target="_blank">ARTSmart</a>&nbsp;classes, which are designed for preschool kids and up. This summer's classes will be offered virtually. Related events with "Two by Two: Animal Pairs," offered through the Beach Museum's Art in Motion series, include: ●Let's Talk Art, a livestream conversation with artist Caroline Thorington at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25. Thorington, a printmaker, will offer an informal discussion&nbsp;of her  Natural History Series, which is featured in the "Two by Two: Animal Pairs" exhibition. She'll also discuss her&nbsp;printmaking process. This program is free and offered via Zoom. Double vision: New Beach Museum exhibit features unique animal pairings

Today is Wednesday, March 24, the 83rd day of 2021. There are 282 days left in the year. 

On March 24, 1976, the president of Argentina, Isabel Peron, was deposed by her country's military. 

In 1765, Britain enacted the Quartering Act, requiring American colonists to provide temporary housing to British soldiers.

FTC: Ignore bogus COVID vaccine survey

The 38th annual Sacred Heart Jr/Sr High School Charity Auction is just around the corner!

The online auction is set to go live at noon Wednesday and close on Saturday. Interested persons may log in and register to bid once the auction goes live.

●A one-week stay in a Colorado cabin with van rental

●A Rock Haven Spa Day for three with a dinner stop at Gella’s in Hays

●A Lennox Pure Air Filtration and Purification System including Installation from Pestinger Heating and Air. Works with your heating and cooling system to improve the air throughout your home

●A pool party for 50 at the Salina Country Club with 10 single topping pizzas and sodas

Additionally, the school has set a goal of $30,000 for donations toward the following items.

●Replace the school's old worn-out 1995 school pick up with a newer pick up or 4-wheel drive Suburban (one that could push snow but also haul passengers other times of the year.)

●New 12 x 16 storage shed to replace the school's current 40-year-old storage shed (by crow's nest) that is used to store and secure football and track equipment.

Sacred Heart Jr/Sr High School Charity Auction opens Wednesday

The&nbsp;Kansas Department of Transportation will temporarily close Interstate 135 (I-135) from mile marker 60 to 82 on Friday for removal of the Shawnee Road bridge. 

The bridge is located about 10.5 miles north of U.S. Highway 56.

I-135 will close at 7 p.m. Friday and reopen at 5 a.m. on Saturday. Traffic will follow the signed detour via Kansas Highway 4, Kansas Highway 15, and U.S. Highway 56. No oversized loads will be allowed on the detour.

Bob Bergkamp Construction Co. Inc., of Wichita, is the prime contractor and has scheduled this $423,713 project to be completed in late March, weather permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone.&nbsp; To stay aware of all road construction projects across Kansas, go to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kandrive.org/" target="_blank">www.kandrive.org</a>&nbsp;or call 5-1-1.

I-135 to be closed overnight in McPherson County for bridge removal

Following is the information from Tuesday's Vax Facts by the Saline County Health Department.

Saline County is now registering and scheduling all those in Phases 1 through 4. If you qualify for any of these phases and have not registered, please do so immediately.

Phases 3 and 4 include those with severe and other medical risks. Registration for people with qualifying health issues is on the "honor system." You will not be asked to show proof of your health condition.

Additionally, Phases 3 and 4 include young adults 16 and older. We are currently primarily receiving the Moderna vaccine, which is only approved for those 18 and older.

The best vaccine for you is the first one offered to you. You are encouraged to sign up on as many lists as possible to get the vaccine as soon as possible.

If you receive a vaccine elsewhere, please contact us to have your name removed from the registry. You will need to get both your first and second vaccines from the same organization.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saline County has vaccinated more than 11,000 members of our community against COVID-19 thus far.

Due to the effectiveness of the vaccines, the Saline County Health officer has allowed the mass gathering public health order to expire.

As a reminder, the public health order is different from the mask mandate, which were put in place by the City and County Commissions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Those without access to the internet can register via phone or by visiting the Salina Senior Services Center.

I did not run for office so I could be the caretaker in the slow demise of our great nation. I ran to advocate for agriculture and our Kansas conservative values.

Government spending should be done transparently through regular order using the appropriations and legislative processes. Our Nation must do better and get our spending under control because we are mortgaging the future for political favors. It’s time to stop the politics, get back to regular order, and get back on track.&nbsp;&nbsp;

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly announced Monday that Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) dollars aided nearly 3,000 Kansas small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Through nearly $57 million in Small Business Working Capital (SBWC) grants, some of the hardest-hit businesses in the state received vital support when they needed it most.

“We’ll use every resource we can to support small businesses as we recover from COVID-19,”&nbsp;Governor Kelly said.&nbsp;“SBWC is just one of many programs we mobilized over the last year to strengthen and protect our businesses affected by COVID-19, so our businesses and our economy emerge from the pandemic stronger than before.”

Kansas businesses with fewer than 500 employees were eligible to apply for SBWC grant funding made available by Governor Kelly’s Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas (SPARK) Taskforce through the federal CARES Act. Grant funds could be used to pay working capital expenses such as payroll, insurance, rent, mortgage payments, utilities, inventory and more.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the Kansas economy,”&nbsp;Lieutenant&nbsp;Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland said.&nbsp;“Our small business community has been valiant in weathering this unprecedented economic storm, and the Kelly administration will continue to do everything in its power to see them recover and grow. I’m pleased that this funding played a significant role in providing relief to so many businesses, but I know that there is still much work to do. We are here to support Kansas businesses and will continue to be a strong partner for them during this crisis and beyond.”
