MANHATTAN – A weed commonly found in Kansas lawns can sure make homeowners feel pretty crabby this time of year.&nbsp;

But applying an herbicide at the right time can help alleviate crabgrass problems, said Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham.&nbsp;

“For most of Kansas, crabgrass typically begins to germinate around May 1 or a little later,” Upham said. “April 15 is normally a good target date for applying crabgrass preventer because it gives active ingredients time to evenly disperse in the soil before germination starts.”&nbsp;

Crabgrass preventers are another name for pre-emergence herbicides that prevent crabgrass seeds from developing into mature plants. “They do not kill the weed seed or even keep the seed from germinating, but rather kill the young plant after it germinates,” Upham said.&nbsp;

He added that crabgrass preventers have no effect on existing plants, “so they must be applied before germination.”&nbsp;

“Preventers do not last forever once applied to the soil. Microorganisms and natural processes begin to gradually break them down soon after they are applied. If some products are applied too early, they may have lost much of their strength by the time they are needed.”&nbsp;

Upham said most crabgrass preventers are fairly ineffective after 60 days. Two products – Dimension and Barricade -- provide season long control of crabgrass from a single application, and can be applied earlier than April 15. Barricade can be applied as early as March 1.&nbsp;

If not using one those two products, however, the proper time to apply a crabgrass preventer falls usually is the same time that the Eastern Redbud tree – known for its pretty pink flowers -- is in full bloom.&nbsp;

“We recommend that homeowners apply crabgrass preventers before fertilizer so that the grass isn’t encouraged to put on too much growth too early,” Upham said. “However, it may be difficult to find products that contain pre-emergents without fertilizer.”&nbsp;

Upham provides a short list of crabgrass preventers that do not contain fertilizer in this week’s&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html" target="_blank">Horticulture Newsletter</a>, a weekly publication produced by he and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources.&nbsp;

Lawn got you crabby? Time nears to apply preventers

A Salina business is out $1,600 after someone stole a trailer earlier this week.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that sometime between Tuesday and Thursday, someone cut the security wire on a 2021 Carry On five-and-a-half-foot by 10-foot trailer and stole it from Orscheln Farm and Home, 360 N. Ohio Street. The trailer has a wooden floor and a steel mesh storage box at the front.

Total loss with damage and theft is $1,600, Forrester noted.

On March 20, officers from the Salina Police Department were sent to the 200 block of South College Avenue in regards to a domestic violence call. 

Officers spoke to a 29-year-old Salina woman who reported being the victim of domestic violence related crimes. The suspect in this case, Brandon Lambert, had left the area as officers arrived on scene.

An affidavit was submitted to the Saline County Attorney’s Office, and an arrest warrant was issued by the Saline County District Court for Lambert for the following requested charges: attempted first degree murder, aggravated domestic violence battery, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, aggravated intimidation of a witness, criminal threat, criminal damage to property, violation of protection order, and harassment by telecommunication device. 

Brandon Lambert has previous contacts within Dickinson, Riley and Saline counties, and has also been known to drive semi-trucks in the north-central region of Kansas for Lambert Trucking (Kansas Transport Company), operating under USDOT Number 832682 and MC Number 736568.

Once you lose that idea, you’ll begin to understand missing a year of funding your Roth IRAs isn’t going to kill you. If you stay in the mindset that having debt is okay, or that you’re going to let it hang around, eventually it will really mess you up financially. Don’t get me wrong, you need to crunch the numbers and be mindful of them, but all the mathematical components are nothing but theory if the behavior doesn’t kick in.

DAVE SAYS: It’ll work out better in the long run

The&nbsp;Kansas Department of Transportation will temporarily close Interstate 135 (I-135) from mile marker 60 to 82 on Friday for removal of the Shawnee Road bridge.

The bridge is located about 10.5 miles north of U.S. Highway 56.

I-135 will close at 7 p.m. Friday and reopen at 5 a.m. on Saturday. Traffic will follow the signed detour via Kansas Highway 4, Kansas Highway 15, and U.S. Highway 56. No oversized loads will be allowed on the detour.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan told Salina Post that deputies will spend extra time in the area of the detour to keep things as safe as possible.

Bob Bergkamp Construction Co. Inc., of Wichita, is the prime contractor and has scheduled this $423,713 project to be completed in late March, weather permitting.

College mentoring programs traditionally pair students with professional mentors who assist with academic and personal growth. Trey Varner, a senior aviation student from&nbsp;Russell, is modifying this concept as he develops the Wildcat Mentor Program at the&nbsp;<a href="https://polytechnic.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Polytechnic campus</a>.

His approach focuses on student-to-student mentorship where experienced aviation students are matched with new students. Varner's vision for the student-led program evolved when he recognized students needed a lifeline to learn more about their degree program. Specifically, he wanted to help students enrolled in the aviation program. By pairing new students with upperclassmen, Varner predicts those individuals will be more successful academically and socially. In turn, mentors will develop better leadership and interactive skills. "When I came to K-State, I would have greatly benefited from a program like this," Varner said. He introduced the concept to Julie Rowe, who serves as the campus diversity, inclusion and access coordinator. Rowe recognized the mentorship program as a valuable resource for student success and retention. She agreed to serve as an advisor, providing insight about university structure, policies and goals. "Getting an initiative off the ground provides many opportunities to learn how the world works," Rowe said. "My job is to help Trey figure out how to turn a passion/idea into reality." Together Rowe and Varner are creating a mentor handbook, recruiting mentors and facilitating training sessions. At least 10 students have agreed to serve as mentors and will assist with a soft rollout during the spring 2021 semester. The Wildcat Mentor Program is projected to be fully operational in the 2021-2022 academic year. Program goals are twofold. New students will be matched with experienced students for academic, social and career guidance. In addition, social events sponsored by the program will help build a sense of community for the entire campus. The program will also help students set themselves apart when they are ready to enter the aviation industry. "Leadership and community service are both important to companies hiring our graduates," Rowe said. "Students who have been mentors can speak to those attributes." According to the Wildcat Mentor Program handbook, a mentor is an experienced and trusted advisor. Mentors are expected to provide wisdom, technical knowledge, assistance, resources, support, empathy and respect. Students will be taught critical skills, including how to effectively instruct, inspire and critique. They will also learn the importance of managing risks and establishing campus and industry relationships. Overall, a quality mentor will help new students understand how their ambitions fit into education, life and career choices. Rowe noted mentorship programs are well researched and proven to be successful. "The university is committed to providing as many resources as possible to help students succeed," she said. "Mentorship is one of those resources. There is nothing like peer-to-peer mentorship." Initially, mentorship training will be facilitated by Rowe and Varner. Ongoing sessions will focus on identifying quality mentoring skills, developing critical competencies through group exercises and introducing students to industry partners. Additionally, several students will be identified to manage the program after Varner graduates.&nbsp;

Varner aspires to work for a corporate or private company as a professional pilot. He says the most influential mentor in his life was his grandfather. "He showed me what it was like to be a strong and confident worker, how to be the best and to excel at anything I put my mind to," Varner said. "But he always made sure to have time to have a little fun and excitement in his life." What advice would Varner give incoming students? “Study, study, study! But also make sure to take time for yourself," he said. "Aviation is tough and can be taxing on the mind, so don't overdo it."&nbsp;

Varner said he hopes the Wildcat Mentor Program will be enhanced over the years with mentees advancing to mentors. He also trusts his ultimate goal will be achieved: creating student-to-student relationships that will contribute to student retention, graduation and successful entry into the aviation industry.&nbsp;

A number of American Red Cross blood drives are scheduled for multiple locations in Saline County over the next few weeks.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, from accident victims to children battling cancer to mothers giving birth, according to information from the Red Cross. Healthy volunteer donors are the key to helping save lives. Medical conditions and emergencies don’t stop for a pandemic.

As of now, the Red Cross will continue to test for COVID antibodies through May 2021. Additionally, the Red Cross staff continues to follow the strictest of CDC and FDA safety guidelines to keep donors, volunteers, and staff safe!

Saline County is now registering and scheduling all those in Phases 1 through 4. If you qualify for any of these phases and have not registered, please do so immediately.

Phases 3 and 4 include those with severe and other medical risks. Registration for people with qualifying health issues is on the "honor system." You will not be asked to show proof of your health condition.

Additionally, Phases 3 and 4 include young adults 16 and older. We are currently primarily receiving the Moderna vaccine, which is only approved for those 18 and older.

The best vaccine for you is the first one offered to you.

You are encouraged to sign up on as many lists as possible to get the vaccine as soon as possible.

If you receive a vaccine elsewhere, please contact us to have your name removed from the registry. You will need to get both your first and second vaccines from the same organization.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Saline County has vaccinated more than 11,000 members of our community against COVID-19 thus far.

Due to the effectiveness of the vaccines, the Saline County Health officer has allowed the mass gathering public health order to expire.

LINDSBORG – Bethany College's teacher education program has received accreditation from the Kansas State Board of Education.

The Bethany program received the accreditation on March 11 and will continue to be fully accredited until Dec. 31, 2027, according to information from the college. 

The program received high praise from the accreditation team having met all standards required by CAEP, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the college noted. The accreditation review occurs every seven years, and ensures the quality of the education program leading to teacher licensure for students who are wanting to teach in elementary, middle or secondary levels. Bethany was the first private college in Kansas accredited by NCATE in 1954.

Today, Bethany offers 11 teacher education programs in art, biology, business, chemistry, elementary education, English, instrumental music, mathematics, physical education and health, social science, and vocal music, including endorsements in special education and English language learners (ELL). 

Currently, the college has 85 teacher education candidates.

"I am grateful for our education team, the teacher education faculty and supervisors, and the advisory council who have been vital to the program. Chamber: No charge for individual tickets to virtual annual meeting

WICHITA --&nbsp;The Rudd Foundation has announced its fourth class of Rudd Scholars who will each receive a four-year college scholarship to attend Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, or Wichita State University. 

The Rudd Scholarship covers all remaining tuition and fees, books and supplies, and on-campus room and board, after other aid, grants, and scholarships are applied to a student’s account. The expected value for the 30 new recipients over four years is approximately $1.1 million. 

With the additional 30 scholars, there are expected to be 103 Rudd Scholars in total this upcoming fall 2021. This represents approximately a $4 million financial commitment to date since the program’s inception in 2018.

 “We are privileged to announce the exceptionally high-caliber, well-rounded students that were selected as Rudd Scholars this year,” said Darrell Swank, president of the Rudd Foundation. “By removing the financial burden associated with a college education, it is our hope that these individuals will be actively involved on campus, maintain good grades, graduate in four years debt-free, and thus be well-positioned to pursue their passions and dreams in whatever vocations they desire.” 

Of the thirty new scholars, 19 will be attending Wichita State, seven at Fort Hays State, and four at Emporia State. The scholarship is earned through a competitive selection process that includes the applicant’s grades, test scores, essays, letters of recommendation, and for the 50 finalists, a personal interview. This year’s process involved selecting the thirty winners from a record number of over 1,300 students from all over the state who began the process.

 “We started the Rudd Scholar Program four years ago and continue to find extremely talented young women and men in our Kansas high schools, who possess the Midwestern values of grit, determination and work ethic, all qualities Mr. Rudd valued,” said Corri Roberts, director of the Rudd Foundation. “We believe by supporting these young leaders to continue their education in Kansas, they will follow their passions and give back to their communities and the state.” 

In addition to living on campus and carrying a full load of classes towards their college degree, scholars will receive mentoring and coaching to help them graduate in four years and build essential academic and life skills. They will also participate in developmental activities outside the classroom, network with leaders in their future professions, build relationships among themselves, and serve to help the next generation of scholars through an active and connected alumni association after graduation. 

“By this time next year, we will have over 100 Rudd Scholars on campus and supporting one another,” said Swank “Our intent is that they will continue to network with each other after graduation, as they continue on their trajectory of being positive contributors to our Kansas communities and society as a whole.”

 </figure>WICHITA --&nbsp;The Rudd Foundation has announced its fourth class of Rudd Scholars who will each receive a four-year college scholarship to attend Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, or Wichita State University. The Rudd Scholarship covers all remaining tuition and fees, books and supplies, and on-campus room and board, after other aid, grants, and scholarships are applied to a student’s account. The expected value for the 30 new recipients over four years is approximately $1.1 million. With the additional 30 scholars, there are expected to be 103 Rudd Scholars in total this upcoming fall 2021. This represents approximately a $4 million financial commitment to date since the program’s inception in 2018. “We are privileged to announce the exceptionally high-caliber, well-rounded students that were selected as Rudd Scholars this year,” said Darrell Swank, president of the Rudd Foundation. “By removing the financial burden associated with a college education, it is our hope that these individuals will be actively involved on campus, maintain good grades, graduate in four years debt-free, and thus be well-positioned to pursue their passions and dreams in whatever vocations they desire.” Of the thirty new scholars, 19 will be attending Wichita State, seven at Fort Hays State, and four at Emporia State. The scholarship is earned through a competitive selection process that includes the applicant’s grades, test scores, essays, letters of recommendation, and for the 50 finalists, a personal interview. This year’s process involved selecting the thirty winners from a record number of over 1,300 students from all over the state who began the process. “We started the Rudd Scholar Program four years ago and continue to find extremely talented young women and men in our Kansas high schools, who possess the Midwestern values of grit, determination and work ethic, all qualities Mr. Rudd valued,” said Corri Roberts, director of the Rudd Foundation. “We believe by supporting these young leaders to continue their education in Kansas, they will follow their passions and give back to their communities and the state.” In addition to living on campus and carrying a full load of classes towards their college degree, scholars will receive mentoring and coaching to help them graduate in four years and build essential academic and life skills. TOPEKA – A Salina roofer has been ordered to pay more than $8,300 in restitution and fined $110,000 for violating the Kansas Consumer Protection Act, including the Kansas Roofing Registration Act, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today.

Michael J. Stubbs, doing business as Triple M Roofing and Remodeling, was also temporarily banned from performing roofing services in Kansas. McPherson County District Judge John Klenda on March 19 approved a default judgment in McPherson County District Court after Stubbs failed to respond to a lawsuit filed by the attorney general. Stubbs was ordered to pay $8,316 in restitution to a McPherson County resident and was fined $110,000 for numerous other violations of the Kansas Roofing Registration Act (KRRA). Stubbs and Triple M Roofing and Remodeling are temporarily banned from operating as a roofing contractor until a valid roofing registration is obtained from the Office of the Attorney General.

Additionally, in recent months, Schmidt has entered into consent judgments with the following 12 roofers for violations of the KRRA. The settlements require the contractors to pay civil penalties for KRRA violations and to comply with the KRRA when providing roofing services in the future. The 12 roofing contractors fined are:

TOPEKA -- A rich collection of historic trail maps has been digitized and is available online in time for the 200th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail. 

This project completes a two-year effort for&nbsp;the Kansas Historical Society (KHS), in partnership with&nbsp;the&nbsp;Kansas City Area Historic Trails Association (KCAHTA).&nbsp;Now available in the Historical Society’s online digital archives,&nbsp;Kansas Memory, these maps will be of interest for travelers, students, educators, researchers, and scholars who want to understand the legacy and impact of the historic frontier trails on our nation’s heritage.

The historic Santa Fe Trail marked its beginnings when William Becknell’s trading expedition left Boonville, Mo., on Sept. 1, 1821, for Santa Fe, Mexico.&nbsp;The expedition followed days after Mexico separated from Spain’s 300-year rule. The Santa Fe Trail became the primary trade route between the new nation of Mexico and the United States.&nbsp;

The digitizing project involves 262 of 342 U.S. G.S. Topographic Quandrangle Maps (Quads) from the&nbsp;KCAHTA’s&nbsp;Lee and Dorothy Kroh Collection&nbsp;maintained at the Mabee Learning Commons on the campus of MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe.&nbsp;These Quads contain the historic frontier Santa Fe Trail&nbsp;between Franklin, Missouri, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, including the Mountain and Cimarron routes; and segments of the Oregon-California Trail within the Kansas City area, which passed the same routes. The maps also include the Fort Leavenworth-Fort Scott Military Road segment through Johnson, Wyandotte, and Leavenworth counties; and territorial roads of the Kansas City region.

The contour lines on the Quads show grade elevations and how they might have determined favorable trail routes. The digitization project is particularly valuable since the Kroh collection is now too fragile to access.

KHS: Historic Santa Fe Trail maps now available online

WASHINGTON, D.C. – First District Rep. Tracey Mann has announced his inaugural 2021 Congressional Art Competition - an opportunity for high school students in the Big First to showcase their artistic talents.

Each spring, a nation-wide high school art competition is sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. More than 650,000 high school students have participated in the competition since it began in 1982.

Do you know how that playground equipment at the park down the street was purchased? Or the new sign leading visitors to a local landmark? How about initial money for a festival?In any community, chances are that someone wrote a grant proposal and received funding to help with the project.Individuals and community groups can learn more about writing successful grants at a two-session online workshop planned by the Central Kansas Extension District on April 14 and 21 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The workshop will be presented by Nancy Daniels, Community Vitality Specialist with K-State Research &amp; Extension. The cost to attend is $60.“This workshop is for everyone, whether they’ve never written a proposal before and have no idea where to start, to those who have experience but are looking for ways to improve their approach,” Daniels explained. “The magic that happens in a community when people find out they don’t have to wait to get something done, that they can do it themselves, is incredible.”Participants also learn from each other, she adds. Even experienced grant writers pick up tips and are re-energized after coming together with peers in their communities.
