Salina Central students honored for their theatre work

North Central Kansas Pride and Lets Restore Humanity are sponsoring a Pride Bingo Night fundraiser Saturday.

The event is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the Salina Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 901 Beatrice Street. Facemasks are required. 

The groups will provide six sheets for $10 with at least two games and entertainment in between for family fun. They also will have some markers for sale, and will have limited drinks and prizes.

Pride Bingo Night set for Saturday

WASHINGTON, D.C.– A Chapman student has won the 2021 Congressional Art Competition for the Big First, Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann announced today.

"It is my great privilege to announce that the winners of this year’s Congressional Art Competition for the First District of Kansas," said Mann.&nbsp;"There are a lot of tremendous artists in the First District, but one stood out to the judges. Thank you to all the students who participated, and congratulations to the top three contenders."

First Place winner: Mena Mann, Chapman High School Second Place winner: Tyra Schultz, Wheatland High School Third Place winner: Mary McDonald, Wheatland High School

"Although Mena and I have the same last name, we are not related," Rep. Mann said. "I look forward to meeting Mena along with our amazingly talented high school artists around the district."

Rep. Mann's office received more 20 twenty entries from high school students across the Big First.

The submissions were judged and selected by a panel of four members of the Manhattan Arts Center in Manhattan, Kan. The pieces were reviewed and judged based on composition, design, concept, and execution.

"I want to thank our panelists and judges for this year's art competition: Clive Fullagar, Kelly Yarbrough, Mary Gordon, and Diana Werts," Rep. Mann said. TOPEKA — A Salina man is among those re-elected to&nbsp;the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Board of Directors.

Jeffrey R. Thompson, Salina; Carolyn R. Banning, Dodge City;&nbsp;Jena K. Lysen, Wichita; and&nbsp;Matthew D. All, Topeka, each were re-elected to a second four-year term on the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Board of Directors during the board's annual meeting Thursday.

Banning is a certified public accountant retired from Smoll &amp; Banning, CPA's, LLC. Lysen is director of human resources for Martin, Pringle, Oliver, Wallace &amp; Bauer, LLP.&nbsp;Thompson is chief financial officer of Salina Vortex Corporation. All is president/CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas.

In addition to the election of the board members,&nbsp;Leonard R. Hernandez, El Dorado, was elected to a one-year term as chair of the board of directors and&nbsp;Rick C. Jackson, Topeka, was elected to a one-year term as vice chair.

A proposed ordinance repealing the city's facemask ordinance has been added to Monday's Salina City Commission meeting agenda.

Commissioners were scheduled to revisit the facemask issue at their May 24 meeting, however, the issue was moved ahead a week in light of new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance issued Thursday that allows fully vaccinated people to stop wearing masks outdoors in crowds and in most indoor settings. Shortly afterward on Thursday, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced that the state would adopt the new CDC guidance.

If approved by the commission, the ordinance repealing the city's facemask ordinance would go into effect after it has been published once in the official city newspaper, according to information from the city. Ordinances usually are published within the same week they are approved by the city commission.

City to consider facemask ordinance repeal on Monday

A Nebraska woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident late Thursday night on Interstate 135 (I-135) south of Salina.

A southbound blue 2008 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Casey Kreikemeier, 29, of Cooper, Neb., struck a southbound red Chevrolet Sonic driven by Larry Kasmerick, 22, of Joplin, Mo., near mile marker 82 on I-135, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. The accident occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

The collision sent the Suburban into the ditch, Soldan said. Kasmerick was able to pull off at the nearby Assaria exit of I-135.

Kreikemeier told deputies that he believed he had fallen asleep, according to Soldan.

The front-seat passenger in the Suburban, Erin Kreikemeier, 27, of Cooper, Neb., suffered an injury to her hand and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Soldan said. She had not been wearing a seatbelt, he added. 

Six children in the Suburban were not injured. They ranged in age from infant to age nine, he said.

No citations had yet been issued, Soldan said.

On Saturday, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 400 block of E. Lapsley Road for a report of theft and damage to property.

 Sometime between April 28 and Saturday, unknown suspect(s) entered the property and damaged multiple vehicles that were parked there. The damage consisted of windows and windshields that had been broken and/or smashed. The vehicles damaged were automobiles, campers, and combines. A Snap-On Roadchest toolbox was also stolen from a service truck on the property.

Total loss and damage is estimated to be in excess of $9,700.

The restrooms at Bill Burke Park recently took a beating and the Salina Police Department wants to know who did it.

FTC: Let’s talk about coronavirus scams

My husband and I are both 29, and we have good jobs that allow us to bring home $100,000 a year combined. Recently, we began talking about starting a family. We live on a budget, but we still have about $15,000 in credit card debt and student loans we’re working hard to pay off. Do you think couples should wait until they are debt-free to have children?

But here’s the thing:&nbsp;If you let money alone, or the perfect&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/recommends/financial-future-term-life-insurance" target="_blank">financial situation</a>, determine whether you have kids or not, you may never have them.&nbsp;Now, would it be&nbsp;easier&nbsp;from a financial standpoint&nbsp;only&nbsp;to wait on having kids until you’re debt-free and there’s a huge pile of cash in the bank? Sure, it would. But children are worth more than any amount of money. If you love each other and want to be parents, and you’re mature adults in every other area,&nbsp;don’t let this debt stop you.&nbsp;

A child isn’t going to derail your journey to financial peace. Having kids might cause you to press pause for a while on some financial matters, or slow your pace a little bit, but as long as you both stay focused and determined to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.everydollar.com/guide-to-budgeting-dave-says" target="_blank">manage your money</a>&nbsp;wisely, chances are things will work out fine.

Just don’t make the mistake lots of parents do—especially first-time parents. Many of them think they have to run out and buy a new, "safer" car, spend a fortune on a fancy crib, or buy all things baby from some overpriced boutique. Do you get what I’m saying, Missy? Why buy a brand-new, $400 stroller, when a friend or relative has a perfectly good, barely used one they’re willing to&nbsp;give&nbsp;you?

It’s easy to get carried away&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/money-habits-we-need-to-break" target="_blank">spending</a>&nbsp;for a baby. McPherson's Goebel named to Dean's List at Belmont University

The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA) has announced a new Zoom seminar that provides older Kansans with information on what can happen if people outlive their incomes and how to avoid this situation. 

The Answers for Older Kansans (AOK) seminar is scheduled for May 27 at 5:30 p.m.

Paul Shipp, managing attorney at Kansas Legal Services, will present Living Longer and Running Out of Money. Shipp will cover the financial problems that can arise from living longer than you had planned. Topics covered in this presentation include bad credit, reverse mortgages, avoiding credit card debt, and bankruptcy. A handout from Kansas Legal Services on ways to protect your income and assets will be available to those who register.

AOK seminar to look at outliving incomes

The latest exhibition in the Salina Art Center takes a look at significant issues from four different perspectives.

Dissonance and Resonance: Four Photographers&nbsp;is now open at Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe Avenue. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Sunday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., and admission is free, though donations are welcome.&nbsp;&nbsp;Masks are required.&nbsp;&nbsp;The exhibition&nbsp;runs through July 25.

Curated by photographer Terry Evans, this stunning show raises questions that affect us all.&nbsp;&nbsp;Reflecting a time of great cultural and ecological upheaval, Evans introduces us to four photographers who work in different ways to raise questions about issues of personal, national, and global significance.

Additionally, Wednesday from noon-1 p.m., is Lunch and Learn with Terry Evans.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Lunch and Learn is free on Facebook Live and Zoom.&nbsp; On Thursday at 6 p.m. is an Artist Talk with photographer Justin Schmitz.&nbsp;&nbsp;This event also is free and in-person at Salina Art Center and on Facebook Live or Zoom.&nbsp;&nbsp;Visit the art center <a href="https://www.salinaartcenter.org/">website</a> to register for Zoom events and check out a complete list of special programming for this exhibition.

Evans had the following to say about the four featured photographers.

“Krista Wortendyke explores ways that photography and news media show images of violence in America.&nbsp;&nbsp;As she says, her work is ‘an invitation to pay attention.’&nbsp;&nbsp;Krista found that news media pictures of violence did not communicate the true harsh realities of the situations.&nbsp;&nbsp;She uses many of these media images in her work,&nbsp;Mass Observation, transforming them to raise questions.

"Through her project,&nbsp;Map Twins,&nbsp;Tonika Johnson has found ways to bring people together across geographic boundaries originally created by redlining and other forms of structural racism.&nbsp;&nbsp;Map Twins&nbsp;are people who live at corresponding addresses on the South and North Sides of the city and who meet and through exploring each other’s neighborhoods come to understand racism that is built into their lives.

"Justin Schmitz photographs and videos moments in the lives of Midwest American teenagers as the teenagers play Airsoft war games with replica guns in his project,&nbsp;In the Mist.&nbsp;His pictures ask us to consider questions about teenage war play shaped by video games and what that play that imitates war means.

"Christina Seely probes issues of climate change creating works of great beauty.&nbsp;&nbsp;Because of her collaboration with scientists and her curiosity and her concern about climate change she brings us stories that pull the viewer into concern and understanding of the complexities of climate change in our lives right now.”

Evans, formerly from Salina, photographs the prairies and plains of North America and the urban prairie of Chicago.&nbsp;&nbsp;Combining both aerial and ground photography, she delves into the intricate and complex relationships between land and people, especially where local people’s landscape is threatened by corporate industrialization.&nbsp;&nbsp;Evans has exhibited widely, including one-person shows at Art Institute of Chicago, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, The Field Museum of Natural History, and Amon Carter Museum of Art.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her work is in museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of Art, and many more.
