According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, five to eight inches of rain fell over southern Ottawa County, prompting a flood warning for the area. Additionally, six to eight inches of rain fell in parts of Lincoln County and northern Saline County, also prompting a flood warning.

While the northern part of the county was inundated with rain, just over three inches of rain was reported in north-central Salina, while near the Eagle Radio studios in southeast Salina, 1.10 inches was reported. At the Salina Regional Airport, 0.52 of an inch was reported for the 24-hour period ending at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Overnight storms dump on parts of our area; 6-8 inches of rain in some locations

The City of Salina will be recognizing a number of its employees this week.

In accordance with the traditions of the American Public Works Association (APWA), those who work in professions that provide and maintain public facilities and services will be recognized Sunday through Saturday during National Public Works Week.

The theme for National Public Works Week 2021, is "Stronger Together." According to the APWA, the theme "challenges our members and their citizens to think about the role public works plays in creating a great place to live." By working together, the impact citizens and public works professionals can have on their communities is magnified and results in the ability to accomplish goals once thought unattainable

Salina’s public works professionals include those who manage the city’s engineering projects and services, fleet management, flood control, household hazardous waste, sanitation refuse and recycling collection, municipal solid waste landfill, street maintenance and repair and traffic control.

Several central Kansas organizations are joining together for a series of virtual Community Conversations for Gun Sense.

The weekly Zoom series will be presented on three consecutive Fridays, beginning this Friday. The series is presented by a partnership of organizations including the League of Women Voters of Salina, Spirituality Resource Center, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Kansas Interfaith Action, and NAACP. 

Each session will begin with a 5-10 minute opening presentation, followed by a “breakout session” for smaller group interaction and a discussion among all attendees. 

The opening session, “Values and Gun Sense,” will begin with a short video featuring Shane Claiborne, co-founder of Red Letter Christians and author of Beating Guns.

The second session on May 28, "Advocacy for Your Values” will feature Rachael Pryor, co-chair of Kansas Interfaith Action on how our deeply-held values, faith-based and otherwise, form and inform the way we talk to legislators, community leaders, and our friends and neighbors. 

The third and culminating event, “The Value of Grassroots Action,” will be a town hall meeting on National Gun Violence Awareness Day, June 4. Participants are encouraged to wear orange. This event's hosts will be Cori Sherman North and Christi Nuding, cochairs of the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

The award is selected by staff from students who promote and take pride in Sacred Heart Junior/Senior High School and in themselves, according to information from the school. 

In the last few weeks, Community Deans and Mentor Teachers collaborated to bestow this honorable title for the final quarter on the following students.

Sacred Heart announces Students of the Quarter

Today is Sunday, May 16, the 136th day of 2021. There are 229 days left in the year. 

On May 16, 1939, the federal government began its first food stamp program in Rochester, New York.

Italy announced that it would reopen its borders on June 3, effectively ending Europe's longest and strictest coronavirus lockdown just as the summer tourism season began. Democrats demanded that the White House hand over all records related to President Donald Trump's latest firing of a federal watchdog, this time a State Department inspector general; they suggested it might be an act of retaliation by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Flood and flash flood warnings have been issued for parts of our area.

Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two feet of water will carry most vehicles away. Turn around, don`t drown.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood warning in effect until 10:15 a.m. for northeastern Saline County.

At 2:16 a.m. CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to slow moving thunderstorms. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain had fallen, with additional amounts of 1 to 2 inches possible over the warned area.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood warning in effect until 10:30 a.m. CDT Sunday for the following counties in our area.

At 1:25 a.m. CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to slow moving thunderstorms. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain had fallen, with an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain possible in the warned area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flash flood warning in effect until 7:45 a.m. Sunday for the following counties in our area.

At 352 a.m. CDT, local law enforcement reported thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Radar was estimating between 3 and 6 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are likely in the warned area. Flash flooding is already occurring.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Salina, Lincoln, Beverly, New Cambria, Glendale and Westfall.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a flash flood warning in effect for southern Ottawa County until 6:30 a.m. CDT Sunday.

At 2:29 a.m. CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 2 and 4.5 inches of rain had fallen. At 2:30 a.m., rainfall of 4.2 inches was measured by a personal weather station in Tescott since midnight. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 2 inches were possible in the warned area.

Eleven people have submitted expression of interest forms in the hopes of being selected to fill a vacancy on the Salina City Commission.

The commission seat became open after Mayor Melissa Hodges received a letter of resignation effective April 29 from Rod Franz's sons and partner on his behalf. Franz is recovering from injuries sustained in an April 6 fall.

More than 150 members of the class of 2021, together with their families and friends, gathered Saturday for Kansas Wesleyan University’s 2021 commencement ceremony at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center.&nbsp;

“Today was a wonderful recognition of the class of 2021 and all it has accomplished,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, KWU President. “These individuals will go in to nursing, education, theatre, music,&nbsp;law, and business,&nbsp;among many other fields. They have contributed great things to the vibrancy and growth of our campus&nbsp;and the Salina&nbsp;community, and we will be forever thankful for that.”

Montric Santee, ’12, of BOK Financial in Dallas, Texas, was the commencement speaker, and delivered stirring, personally-based remarks on how failure can lead to success.&nbsp;

Award winners announced included Autumn Colgin (Canton) and Dillon Harriger (Kearney, Neb.) who earned the Fran Jabara Leadership Awards, an honor based on entrepreneurial traits and leadership, particularly in business creation.&nbsp;

Kelsey Ripperger, a senior from Hastings, Neb., earned the University Medallion, given to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average.&nbsp;

Face coverings were required during the event and graduates were limited to 10 guests apiece, in recognition of concerns surrounding COVID-19. In addition, members of the Class of 2020 were able to participate in this year’s proceedings if they were unable to attend&nbsp;last&nbsp;August’s delayed ceremony.&nbsp;

The members of KWU Nursing’s class of 2021, meanwhile, received their pins in a special ceremony Friday evening in Mabee Arena.&nbsp;

The next Emergency Food Assistance Program commodities distribution is coming up next week.

The drive through distribution, hosted by Sunrise Presbyterian Church, is scheduled for 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the 4-H Building in Kenwood Park.

Those participating are required to bring a Saline County photo ID and proof of income. Those who are picking up commodities for someone else will need a photo ID and written authorization from that person.

All those participating will be required to wear face masks.

Commodities being distributed include frozen pork loin, split peas, orange juice, fresh apples, sliced pears, sliced peaches, dry lentils, spaghetti sauce, frozen orange juice, frozen pork patties, and pistachios in shells.

Income guidelines are $1,354 for one person with $479 added for each additional family member.

Salina Family Healthcare to offer vaccinations at Laundry Love

The City of Salina has announced that crack sealing work on city streets will continue next week.

Monday through Friday, APAC Shears of Salina will seal cracks on the following City of Salina streets, weather permitting:

Residents will be asked
to remove their cars from streets to facilitate the work, which will take place
generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. &nbsp;Access to properties within work zones will be
maintained at all times. &nbsp;“Road Work
Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane
closures are to be expected. &nbsp;Motorists
are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of
the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing
program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of
the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water
from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in
reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under
pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action;
alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness,
the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no
less often than every seven years. Approximately
31 centerline miles of streets will be sealed in 2021.

The $460,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2021 maintenance capital improvement program.

Being an American means you do not have to choose between your deepest beliefs and your country – thanks, in part, to the work of these Indian Americans.

Since the 1850s when Asians began immigrating to the United States in large numbers, they have contributed to American society in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.history.com/news/asian-american-inventions-contributions" target="_blank">profound ways</a>. Yet few know how this&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2012/07/Asian-Americans-religion-full-report.pdf" target="_blank">diverse group</a>, which includes Americans tracing their heritage to any of nearly 50 countries from India to Japan, has fought for the rights of&nbsp;all&nbsp;Americans to live according to their deepest beliefs.

Throughout our country’s history, Asian American communities have brought religious freedom cases to the courts and won not just for themselves, but for the benefit of all. In standing up for their religious beliefs, they’ve strengthened the shield of religious liberty, protecting every American’s First Amendment right to freedom of conscience.

Take&nbsp;Simratpal “Simmer” Singh, who was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 2006, where he began a distinguished military career.

As a practicing Sikh, Singh had worn a turban and beard for years, but the Army’s ban on long hair and beards meant he had to choose between military service and his deepest beliefs. Singh chose his country and served for a decade before challenging the policy under the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.becketlaw.org/research-central/rfra-info-central/" target="_blank">Religious Freedom Restoration Act</a>, which requires the government to have a compelling reason to limit free exercise rights.

While Capt. Singh’s particular faith may be unfamiliar to most Americans, many of us can empathize with wanting to believe and practice our beliefs without interference.

The courts agreed with Singh, and in 2017, the Army issued new guidelines that allow Sikhs to serve without having to abandon their articles of faith. Because of Singh, millions of Americans, Sikh or otherwise, can fully practice their faith while enlisted.

Twenty years earlier, Sikh families in California set a similar precedent. In the 1990s, laws and policies against weapons on school grounds became stricter. California’s Livingston Union School District suspended&nbsp;Rajinder, Sukhjinder&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jaspreet Cheema, three Sikh siblings, after they wore their kirpans to schools. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sikhcoalition.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/TeachingAboutReligion-Chapter-17.pdf" target="_blank">kirpan</a>&nbsp;is a short, curved blade worn by many Sikhs to symbolize their duty to defend the oppressed.

You might agree the school district had a responsibility to keep students and staff safe. But would safety mean banning Sikh practice?

The Cheema family pushed back, demonstrating that other districts accommodated kirpans by riveting blades to their sheaths. They pointed out the Livingston Union School District could do the same. Since then, the Cheemas’ story has been an example of how students can stay true to their beliefs while getting a public education.

Despite the many narratives pitting our identities against one another,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/2020/07/29/a-first-amendment-framework-for-effective-dialogue-in-the-classroom/" target="_blank">our own rights are strengthened</a>&nbsp;when we stand up for the rights of people who look and think differently than us.

Indian Americans like Capt. Singh and the Cheemas fought for their right to be both fully Sikh and fully American. In doing so, they protected the rights of any believer to do the same. Their struggle is not unique to Sikhism;&nbsp;<a href="https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/405/319/#tab-opinion-1949612" target="_blank">Buddhist</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hinduamerican.org/press/hindu-american-foundation-amicus-brief-tanzin-v-tanvir" target="_blank">Muslim&nbsp;</a>and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pasadenanow.com/main/supreme-court-justice-orders-newsom-to-respond-in-harvest-rock-case/" target="_blank">Christian</a>&nbsp;Asian Americans have likewise brought challenges and won protections for their own faiths and any other.

As they demonstrate, being an American means you do not have to choose between your deepest beliefs and serving your country or between your god and your education. Americans who use their First Amendment rights as a shield to protect themselves and those with different beliefs should be celebrated.

Sikhism is one of the world’s largest religions. It has deep roots in Indian history and culture. An estimated 500,000 believers, mostly Indian American, live in the United States. Sikhism emphasizes equality and service to others, and Sikhs have played important roles in American communities since practitioners first arrived in the late 1800s. Physical articles of the Sikh faith include: kanga, a small comb; kara, a steel or iron bracelet; kachera, undergarments; kirpan, a ceremonial knife; and kesh, uncut hair. Many Sikhs also wear a turban, a long strip of cloth that is wrapped around their unshorn hair.

Rural COVID clinics open for 2nd shots Wednesday; J&J also available

Today is Saturday, May 15, the 135th day of 2021. There are 230 days left in the year. 

On May 15, 1970, just after midnight, Phillip Lafayette Gibbs and James Earl Green, two Black students at Jackson State College in Mississippi, were killed as police opened fire during student protests. 

In 1602, English navigator Bartholomew Gosnold and his ship, the Concord, arrived at present-day Cape Cod, which he's credited with naming.

In 1918, U.S. airmail began service between Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York. 

In 1948, hours after declaring its independence, the new state of Israel was attacked by Transjordan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.
