TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), continues to maintain a public health warning for Marion County Lake in Marion County due to blue-green algae.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Blue-green algae warning continues for Marion County Lake

MINNEAPOLIS -- It's safe to say that Lana Reinhart and Linda Willoughby are dedicated to their students.

The two USD 239 North Ottawa County teachers will have 64 years between them when they retire at the end of the current school year.

In Reinhart's case, USD 239 is the only district she has worked for since graduating from Emporia State University in 1984.

Willoughby took a slightly different path. She began her career by operating the Sugar and Spice Preschool for 10 years before moving to USD 239.

On May 23, from 1-3 p.m., the families of the two teachers will have a retirement reception for them. The reception is scheduled to be in the Minneapolis Jr/Sr High School lobby, and is open to the public, according to information from the two teachers' families.

Following is career information about the two teachers as provided by their families.

After graduating from Emporia State University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business education, the then Lana Waetzig of Topeka accepted her first job to teach at Minneapolis High School. Little did she know, 37 years later, she would be retiring from the same school she started her career in. During her tenure at USD 239, Reinhart has been under the leadership of four superintendents, eight principals, taught in numerous classrooms (even the blue building that was located in the parking lot behind the cafeteria), traveled to Delphos Attendance Center to teach, saw the MHS mascot change to the “Power Lion,” and saw multiple renovations and additions to the school’s physical building. She has been a member of the KNEA more than 15 years and served as co-negotiator for two years. 

Reinhart has educated thousands of students during her career in many different classes. Some of those classes include Accounting 1 and 2, Gregg Shorthand, Forkner Shorthand, Office Practices, Lion Pride Connect Class, The Real-Life Game, Business Law, Business Math, Business Life Skills, Economics, Marketing, Personal Finance, Jr. High Keyboarding, and Entrepreneurship. She also taught a Web Design class where the students were responsible for writing articles and maintaining the school website. 

“While many subjects have not changed a lot in 37 years, Mrs. Reinhart has spent her career keeping up with the technology needs of the business curriculum and adapting to the changing demand of the workforce needs. Almost every year we are adding technology, software, or content that Mrs. Reinhart has to learn before teaching it the next year,” said Terry Moeckel, principal of MJ/SHS.

Reinhart was the co-head Pep Club sponsor during her earlier years at Minneapolis. She helped form the S.A.D.D. (Students Against Driving Drunk) chapter at Minneapolis High School, which won the “Best New Chapter” award. It was the largest club/organization at the school. S.A.D.D. held a yearly New Year’s Eve all-night lock in for the students, jello-wrestling tournaments, hay rack rides and movie nights at the Lindsey one-room schoolhouse. They also attended student retreats at Rock Springs Ranch. It was very important to Reinhart to provide a positive and safe environment where students could have fun. Later in her career, she was the head coach of the MHS Scholars Bowl team, where she enjoyed seeing just how smart the students are!

While Reinhart is looking forward to a retirement with no papers to grade and no teacher inservices to attend, she cherishes the millions of memories made in the halls of Minneapolis Jr/Sr High School and will forever be a Lion.

Linda Willoughby will be retiring from teaching after serving the youth of Ottawa County for almost 40 years. She began her career running Sugar and Spice Preschool out of the basement of her residence in Minneapolis for a decade before moving to USD 239 where she taught for 27 years. 

Willoughby spent 22 years of her career teaching middle school science at both Delphos Attendance Center and Minneapolis Junior Senior High School. Her passion for teaching science was evident.  She also coached the Science Olympiad team where her dedication to her students and coaching was demonstrated by the superior performance of her teams year after year. During those 22 years, her teams qualified for state 20 times, placed third once, second seven times, and first an additional four times. In her final year as Science Olympiad coach, her team won regionals, medaling in nine of their 10 events, and finished fifth at state in the small school division. 

“Mrs. Willoughby has the perfect mindset for middle school science.  She keeps the students engaged with so many different labs and activities making the learning an active process that junior high kids really are geared for,” Moeckel said.

Dogs have always been an important part of Willoughby’s life and one of the ways she was able to connect with her students on a deeper level. She trained two Labrador service dogs, Sadie and Tillie,  who spent time in her science classrooms comforting students, providing them with motivation to work hard, and improving their confidence.  Willoughby plans to spend her retirement years following her grandchildren’s activities, training dogs, and traveling the country to dog shows. 

Willoughby’s commitment to her students went beyond just teaching and coaching. She spent many hours working with her students at the Minneapolis Community Gardens and Owl’s Project. For years, Willoughby organized a special Fall Fest for the Delphos Attendance Center students where they had guest speakers and spent time learning about different businesses in Minneapolis and the Owl’s Project. After Sept. 11, 2001, she helped organize a recognition of local first responders and brought in a Black Hawk Helicopter for the community to tour as part of the Fall Fest activities. During her summers, she served the youth of Ottawa County by starting the Red Cross Swimming Program and providing lessons for well over a decade. Her dedication to the youth of the community was always evident.  

In 2017, Willoughby was nominated and received the local VFW Teacher of the Year Award presented to a teacher each year for outstanding commitment to teaching citizenship to students. She went on to win the VFW Regional Award and State Teacher of the Year Award for her activities working with local youth over the years.

The City of Salina announced today that it is closing West Lake Drive for pavement replacement.

Beginning Monday the City of Salina Public Works Department will be replacing sections of pavement on West Lake Drive south of East Iron Avenue.

While in repair, West Lake Drive from East Iron Avenue will be closed to through traffic. Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within two weeks, the city noted in a news release.

Saline County closing part of S. Holmes Road for culvert work

MCPHERSON (AP) — McPherson officials are investigating after seven headstones were damaged or moved at a cemetery. Cemetery officials say sometime last week vandals knocked over and broke the headstones, and one was moved to nearby train tracks. 

McPherson police patrol the cemetery every night but no one saw the vandals. Some of the vandalized monuments date back to the 1800s. The damages range from about $200 to $500. 

The McPherson Public Lands Department has replaced four of the stones but it could take weeks before the other three are repaired.

McPherson County Crime Stoppers is seeking tips about the incident. Any information to identify possible suspects and locate the missing property is appreciated, the organization noted on its Facebook page. Some of the most common unwanted calls the FTC sees currently include pretend Social Security Administration, Medicare, and IRS calls, fake Amazon or Apple Computer support calls, and fake auto warranty and credit card calls.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

But no matter what type of unwanted calls you get (and everyone is getting them) your best defense is a good offense. Here are three universal truths to live by:

Spencer Angell, senior at Central High School, has been named a winner of the 2021 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship.

Angell is one of 7,500 winners selected from a nationwide pool of 15,000 finalists. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

Central's Angell wins National Merit $2,500 scholarship

A pickup stolen from a downtown parking lot and later believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run incident in west Salina, was later located at a convenience store in another part of town.

At 5:40 p.m. Monday, witnesses observed a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pull into the parking lot of Quality Inn and Suites, 2110 W. Crawford, and hit a legally parked 2015 Ford F150 and then leave the parking lot, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. Witnesses told police that the driver was a long-haired white male and that there was a passenger in the pickup. Witnesses also provided a license plate number to police.

Officers then met with the owner of the pickup on Tuesday. Charles Carroll, 81, of Salina, told police that his 2001 Dodge pickup should have been in the parking lot at 109 W. Walnut Street. He told police that his pickup was stolen sometime between noon on Monday and 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday. The pickup was valued at $5,000.

On Wednesday, an officer saw the pickup parked at Kwik Star, 100 N. Broadway. It was unoccupied and the ignition had been punched. There was damage on the front passenger side of the pickup consistent with the reports of the hit-and-run incident, Forrester reported.

Surveillance video from the convenience store showed the pickup pull into the store's parking lot at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday. An unknown slender white female was observed around the pickup. She left and then returned at 11:10 p.m. on Tuesday. She grabbed some items from the pickup and then left walking southbound wearing a black back pack and carrying a green bag.

Stolen pickup involved in hit-and-run, later found at convenience store

A few storms could be strong to marginally severe, the weather service noted.

Small quake shakes part of Dickinson County this morning

Heading into the workforce after college and living on your own is hard enough without a global crisis messing with the job market. But listen, you can make a steady income and win with your money if you make a few smart moves starting right now.

Here are my top tips for staying in control of your money, and getting ahead in an unstable job market after graduation:

If you’re going to be making any kind of income, you need to be able to plan out how you’ll use every single dollar of it. And you can do that by making (and sticking to) a zero-based budget where your income minus your expenses equals zero.

That just means living on less money than you make, so you have some margin for saving. Don’t rent a big, fancy apartment when you could save a ton by getting a simple one-bedroom. Don’t drive a new Lexus when you can get by just fine with a used Honda. Get the picture?

This is key, especially these days, when circumstances can change at any time. You need to have some cash stored away for the stuff that always seems to happen when you’re trying to get on your feet. Start by saving a $1,000 emergency fund. Then, once you’re out of debt, save three to six months of expenses in a fully-funded emergency fund.

4. Look for jobs you wouldn’t normally take&nbsp;

Keep in mind you may have to make some sacrifices and work somewhere that wouldn’t be your “ideal” job until you can find something else. A few places really needing employees right now are restaurant/delivery services, cleaning services, factories and (weirdly enough) airlines. And of course, continue looking for your dream job on websites like Glassdoor, Indeed, FlexJobs, and LinkedIn.

If you had a good relationship with your teachers, think about reaching out to them. They might be able to connect you with people in your field who are currently hiring. Plus, they’ll probably like hearing from you).

If one stream of income isn’t enough, try virtual or in-person tutoring, nannying, dog walking, selling stuff on eBay, freelance writing, managing social media accounts for small businesses, or driving for Lyft or Uber—anything that helps you bring in extra cash. I know it’s hard to think about surviving after graduation when things still seem crazy. But if you’ll just be wise about your work and your money, I promise you’ll be more than okay—you’ll be crushing it!

On May 13, 1607, English colonists arrived by ship at the site of what became the Jamestown settlement in Virginia (the colonists went ashore the next day). 

In 1568, forces loyal to Mary, Queen of Scots were defeated by troops under her half-brother and Regent of Scotland, the Earl of Moray, in the Battle of Langside, thwarting Mary's attempt to regain power almost a year after she was forced to abdicate. 

In 1914, heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis was born in Lafayette, Alabama. 

In 1917, three shepherd children reported seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary near Fatima, Portugal; it was the first of six such apparitions that the children claimed to have witnessed.

Four Seasons&nbsp;was originally choreographed by Jerome Robbins for the New York City Ballet.&nbsp; It is a one act ballet featuring: Spring, Summer, Winter, and Autumn which is sure to bring joy to the audience.&nbsp; Dancers have been rehearsing since March for this spring ballet.

Ballet Salina is designed to increase exposure to and appreciation for classical performance arts in the&nbsp;community as well as to provide opportunities to local youth to gain training that mirrors that of the professional world.

MANHATTAN – The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;program is welcoming back one of its most popular summer camping experiences in late June.&nbsp;

The 4-H Campference, which was held virtually a year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held June 27-30 at the Rock Springs 4-H camp, south of Junction City.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/camping/campference/index.html" target="_blank">Registration is available online</a>&nbsp;through Saturday and spots are limited, though organizers say they will keep a waiting list to fill late cancellations.&nbsp;

“We are so excited to get back to Rock Springs this summer,” said Beth Hinshaw, a Kansas 4-H youth development specialist in southeast Kansas.&nbsp;

Campference is open to youth ages 12-14. Hinshaw said the camp originated several years ago as a way to keep middle school youth engaged in 4-H activities and serve as a “bridge” to other statewide 4-H activities, such as Discovery Days.&nbsp;

“We always talk about all of the fun at 4-H camp because we’re going to ride horses, we’re going to paddle canoes, we’re going to do the adventure course,” Hinshaw said. “But we’re also going to have some very specific workshops that help these ‘tweenagers’ with leadership skills and how they can use those back in their community.”&nbsp;

The adventure course is a new feature at the Rock Springs 4-H camp. Hinshaw said delegates to 4-H Campference will participate in activities on the high ropes course, led by trained staff members. “They are teaching aspects of teamwork, working together and coming to consensus,” Hinshaw said.&nbsp;

Other activities include icebreakers, a guest speaker and a morning mail call in which youth are led through activities to help them get acquainted with others in their camp group.&nbsp;

“We want everybody at Campference to know everybody else by the time it’s all over,” Hinshaw said.&nbsp;

🎥Svensk Hyllningsfest set for Oct. 8-9 in Lindsborg

MANHATTAN – There’s a common joke in many parts of the country – and Kansas is no exception – that if you don’t like the weather…well, wait 15 minutes.&nbsp;

That bit of sarcasm should be warning enough for Kansas gardeners who are enjoying mostly mild conditions so far this spring. It may be nice today, but watch out for tomorrow.&nbsp;

“We are entering the storm season, and various areas of the state will likely have high winds, excessive rainfall and hail,” said Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham.&nbsp;

Upham said Kansans should be on the ready to help garden crops withstand the potential for severe weather. Depending on the type of adverse conditions, here are a few of his recommendations:&nbsp;

“The force of rainfall pounding on the soil can result in a thick crust that prevents seeds from emerging and partially blocks oxygen from reaching the plant’s roots,” Upham said. To correct the problem, gardeners should lightly scrape the soil surface after it is dried, being careful not to till too deeply that you damage young roots.&nbsp;

Standing water cuts off oxygen to the plant’s roots and damages the plant if it doesn’t drain quickly enough. “Most plants can withstand 24 hours of standing water without harm,” Upham said. “But hot, sunny weather can make a bad situation worse because the water becomes hot enough to ‘cook’ the plants.”&nbsp;

There are few remedies to standing water caused by severe weather, though Upham said gardeners cold try cutting a small channel that allows the water to drain.&nbsp;

Most plants should recover quickly from a hail storm, Upham said, because leaves regenerate quickly. “The situation becomes more serious if the stems and fruit were damaged,” he said. “The plant can recover from a few bruises, but if it looks like the plants were mowed down by a weed whip, then you should re-plant.”&nbsp;

Water or wind can cause plants to lean sharply in one direction. There’s not much to do in this case, as they should start to straighten after a few days, according to Upham. “Don’t try to bend them back as they often break easily,”&nbsp;&nbsp;he said.&nbsp;

Protecting vegetable transplants from wind&nbsp;

Upham said vegetable transplants, even those hardened in a cold frame, may need protection from strong winds when set out.&nbsp;

Wooden shingles placed to block the wind used to be recommended but are now difficult to find.&nbsp;

“Try a plastic milk jug or a 2-liter soda bottle with both the bottom and top cut off,” Upham said. “Push the jug or bottle into the soil far enough so it won't blow away. In windy conditions, it may need to be stabilized with a wooden dowel or metal rod.”&nbsp;

Upham and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with tips for maintaining home landscapes. NWS: Chance for some heavy rains through Saturday

MANHATTAN – Fluctuating commodity prices, weather challenges and other factors mean farmers are used to a certain amount of stress. But the pandemic in the past year added that much more, according to a Kansas State University behavioral health specialist.&nbsp;

“Farming is difficult in the best of circumstances, and to add a layer of stress such as the pandemic makes it more difficult to do the work and to recover from a mental health perspective,” said Bradley Dirks PA-C, K-State Research and Extension Behavioral Health Specialist and associate director of the university’s Physician’s Assistant program.&nbsp;

“There are so many things impacting our mental health in rural areas. It’s almost like a perfect storm,” said Dirks, who noted that everyone has a different response to stress. &nbsp;

“Some stress is good – it creates movement. It makes me be engaged. It makes me be involved in my environment. But when stress becomes too great, it begins to break down some of those natural abilities we have to deal with stress in our life,” he said. “The same behaviors that often are perceived as positive – that ability to ‘power through it’ or ‘pull ourselves up by our bootstraps’ – push us to work that much harder and can sometimes fray the edges of what people are trying to accomplish, even to the point of coming unraveled.” &nbsp;

Dirks noted that in rural communities and particularly in farming operations, people often work in solitary situations. Those stretches of time spent alone are typically balanced with church, school, community or other social gatherings. The pandemic made it difficult if not impossible to have that social balance, which further isolated many people.&nbsp;

 </figure>MANHATTAN – Fluctuating commodity prices, weather challenges and other factors mean farmers are used to a certain amount of stress. But the pandemic in the past year added that much more, according to a Kansas State University behavioral health specialist.&nbsp;“Farming is difficult in the best of circumstances, and to add a layer of stress such as the pandemic makes it more difficult to do the work and to recover from a mental health perspective,” said Bradley Dirks PA-C, K-State Research and Extension Behavioral Health Specialist and associate director of the university’s Physician’s Assistant program.&nbsp;“There are so many things impacting our mental health in rural areas. It’s almost like a perfect storm,” said Dirks, who noted that everyone has a different response to stress. &nbsp;“Some stress is good – it creates movement. It makes me be engaged. It makes me be involved in my environment. But when stress becomes too great, it begins to break down some of those natural abilities we have to deal with stress in our life,” he said. “The same behaviors that often are perceived as positive – that ability to ‘power through it’ or ‘pull ourselves up by our bootstraps’ – push us to work that much harder and can sometimes fray the edges of what people are trying to accomplish, even to the point of coming unraveled.” &nbsp;Dirks noted that in rural communities and particularly in farming operations, people often work in solitary situations. Those stretches of time spent alone are typically balanced with church, school, community or other social gatherings. The pandemic made it difficult if not impossible to have that social balance, which further isolated many people.&nbsp;That isolation plus mental health resources that are few and far between can magnify the problem for those seeking help. Even telehealth sessions with a counselor are difficult or non-existent for those lacking good broadband internet. &nbsp;Dirks said some indications of stress include a lack of sleep, resulting in fatigue which magnifies everyday problems. Too many days like that result in a lack of concentration, irritability, anxiety, and changes in appetite which can cause further isolation. Some people turn to alcohol or other substances as a means to cope, which can further negatively impact our relationships. &nbsp;“One of the things that makes us successful is our ability to power through. One of the things that impairs our ability to be healthy is our unwillingness to say we need help,” he said.&nbsp;He described rural Kansas as a “mental health desert,” saying farmers often must drive long distances to find someone to connect with or who understands farm or rural stress. &nbsp;Part of the solution is to educate people, Dirks said. More than 50 percent of us will feel depressed or anxious at some point in our lives so we are not alone or unique in our struggles.&nbsp;To help connect rural Kansans with resources, the K-State Research and Extension Stress and Resiliency Transdisciplinary Team was assembled. &nbsp;“We’re in a great position with our extension agents and our extension system as a whole, to be able to identify the problem as well as be part of the solution,” Dirks said. The team works in both rural and urban areas.&nbsp;Any group across the state – bank group, church group, or farm related organization -- can contact team members Rebecca McFarland at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:rmcfarla@ksu.edu" target="_blank">rmcfarla@ksu.edu</a>&nbsp;or Rachael Clews at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:rclews@ksu.edu" target="_blank">rclews@ksu.edu</a>&nbsp;to request a one- to two-hour program on the topic of mental health. &nbsp;Numerous people on the team have been trained in QPR (Question, Persuade and Respond), Dirks said. That program is focused on people who are potentially suicidal – those who see no way out. Some team members are also trained in what he called mental health first aid, not as therapists but to recognize what to do when they know someone is struggling. &nbsp;Dirks encourages anyone who is struggling with mental health challenges or who knows someone who may be, to seek help.
