This position will have primary responsibility for assisting Operations Technicians with the preparation and execution of startup, changeovers, and line shut down, executing the master sanitation functions, coordination of production materials, safety compliance, data collection, maintaining 5S Visual Workplace and overall production support. The Operations Assistant will also be responsible to work within a structure that requires considerable interaction with others in the same production unit as well as other production units and support functions.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

●Understands and is responsible for full compliance and following of all Quality, GMP's, AIB and Micro (C&amp;S Guidelines), EOHS, and safety standards and guidelines.

●Assist with startup, changeovers, and line shut down of automated and manual equipment throughout the production facility.

●Performs Housekeeping activities as per master sanitation schedule, and conducts/participates in area housekeeping assessments as required to meet all GMP's, FDA and AIB requirements.

●Responsible to support line operations during lunches, breaks and coverage for open positions.

●Responsible for finished goods preparation and inspection, including top cap placement, inspection check list, legible date codes, and quality of bag seals.

●Production line waste removal and disposal according to Standard Operating Procedures.

●Responsible for cleaning and sanitation of equipment throughout the production areas during operation. Trained in LOTO, chemical handling, PPE, etc.

●Understand and comply with Hill's policies, safety standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Food Safety. Identify and report Food safety issues to management.

●Responsible for managing Dum back/Regrind/Reblend product movement.

●Supports packaging lines with staging of resources needed based on the production schedule including hand stacking of all bag sizes.

●Attends the Shift Transition Meeting to understand current shift production schedule.

●Contribution of additional work hours when needed to meet business demands.

●High school diploma or equivalent.. Must be able to work any shift schedule, including nights and weekends.

●Ability to bend, climb, and work in confined spaces, and work in hazardous condition spaces for up to twelve hours per day.

●Ability to push totes containing product up to 750 lbs.

●Ability to work in extreme weather conditions with temperature ranges from cold to hot and humid.

●Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, repeatedly.

●Use a stand-up or sit-down forklift, intermittently for up to twelve hours per day.

●Technical college/vocational school certificate or Associates degree in Manufacturing-related area preferred.

●Food safety experience including cleaning and sanitation of equipment.

Small quake rattles south of Hope early this morning

Two rifles were stolen from an unlocked pickup while it was parked in a field in far eastern Saline County Monday afternoon and evening.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a 2004 Dodge Ram belonging to John Swisher, 64, of Assaria, was parked in a fenced field in the 500 block of S. Solomon Road while he went to do some work nearby. 

Sometime between 1:30-7:30 p.m., someone cut the barbed wire fence, entered the unlocked pickup, and stole a Ruger HMR17 rifle with a Nikon scope that belonged to Swisher, Soldan said. The rifle was valued at $469 and the scope at $130.

Additionally, a Savage Arms 17 HMR rifle with Bushnell scope that belonged to Swisher's son, Uriah Swisher, 37, of Assaria, was stolen, Soldan said. The rifle was valued at $419 and the scope at $100.

Damage to the fence was estimated at $20.

The demand for blood from hospitals with trauma centers rose by 10 percent in 2021 compared to 2019. That's more than five times the growth of demand for blood at other facilities that provide transfusions.

According to information from the American Red Cross, hospitals are responding to an atypically high number of traumas and emergency room visits. Twenty to 40 percent of trauma deaths that occur after hospital admission involve massive hemorrhaging. In these dire circumstances, doctors may need hundreds of blood products, depending on the severity of the trauma, to help save a life, the American Red Cross noted.

Patients who deferred care during the height of the pandemic also are straining blood supplies as many now have more advanced disease progression and require more transfusions.

Kansas Wesleyan’s Division of Fine Arts has announced its fall and winter schedule of events, a slate that encompasses some of the best music, theatre and art opportunities in north-central Kansas.

“We are thrilled to resume a traditional events schedule,” said Professor Barbara Marshall Nickell, division chair. “It’s always a pleasure to welcome the community to our wonderful campus, and let them experience the arts and Kansas Wesleyan simultaneously.”

The slate kicks off Aug. 6, when a mixed media presentation by Connie Burket begins at The Gallery in Sams Hall of Fine Arts. The public is welcome to attend and, as always at The Gallery, admission is free.

On Sept. 3, the KWU orchestra and jazz ensembles will play on the Eric Stein stage at the Smoky Hill River Festival. Another special art exhibit, this one the work of Lili Guillen, follows at The Gallery on Sept. 17. Guillen’s work is photography, textiles and mixed media, and will be on display through Oct. 31.

The KWU honors choir festival will be held Sept. 25, and the first on-campus concert of the year sees the orchestra, wind ensemble and jazz ensembles play Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Sams Chapel.

Theatre enters the picture on Oct. 14, when the annual fall play opens in Fitzpatrick Auditorium. Showings will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 and 15, and a 2 p.m. showing will take place Oct. 17. Those events mark part of Homecoming and Family Weekend, where the Department of Music will participate in multiple events.

The honors orchestra festival is set for Oct. 30, and a to-be-determined radio drama will take place Oct. 31.

A new display returns to The Gallery on Nov. 5, when a drawing and painting exhibit featuring the work of Kelly Yarbrough is scheduled to premiere. The fall student showcase will take place in the Sams Hall of Fine Arts lobby at the same time.

Nov. 13 sees the honors band festival come to campus, and the Philharmonic Choir visits Belmont Christian Church in Salina on Nov. 21. An acting and dance recital is scheduled for Dec. 1, with a special jazz and percussion ensemble concert to follow the next day (7:30 p.m., Sams Chapel).

One of Salina’s most-beloved holiday traditions, Christmas by Candlelight, will be held Dec. 5.

The December slate wraps up Dec. 11 (7 p.m.) and 12 (4 p.m.), when the Salina Symphony hosts the Wesleyan Chorale at the Stiefel Theatre in downtown Salina.

“I am so proud of our entire division,” said Marshall Nickell. “The past year, filled with COVID-19-related challenges, has been quite difficult for our programs. Our entire university community worked together to overcome them and continue to provide excellent experiences for our students. Grants, an appointment, and the 2022 budget are among the items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street. A time for public comment is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting.

Commissioners are being asked to allow the Department of Senior Services to accept the following two grants to be used for building repairs and improvements at the senior center.

Dane G. Hansen Foundation grant in the amount of $20,000

Sunderland Foundation grant in the amount of $152,500

The funds will be used for a new Meals On Wheels drive through, outbuilding repair, tuckpointing the second and third floors of the building, and replacement of all windows, according to information from the commission meeting packet.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to consider appointing Mac Villalpando as a trustee on the Cambria Township Board.

The additional rainfall may aggravate ongoing flooding or result in new flooding of creeks, rivers and low-lying areas.

Additionally a flood watch in effect from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening includes Marion County.

Showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain are forecast across the area on Tuesday.

Flooding of low water crossings and low-lying areas are possible. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Tips for keeping pets safe during July 4th celebrations

ABILENE - Effective immediately, Memorial Hospital inpatients may have two visitors in the building at the same time instead of two visitors per day. 

Visitors will be required to check out at the hospital’s main entrance to allow additional visitors to enter. Visitation hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In addition, all outpatients, emergency room patients and clinic patients may have two visitors/assistants accompany them for appointments.

We will continue to monitor COVID-19 infection risk in our community and adjust visitation as safely appropriate.

All other COVID-19 guidelines will remain in place:

●All who enter the facilities will be screened for COVID-19 infection risk.

●Hospital visitors must be age 18 or older.

●Masks will be required for all patients and visitors&nbsp; - as required by state and federal COVID-19 requirements for health care facilities.

●Visitors should remain with patients as much as possible and socially distance from others.

●Patients who are COVID-19 positive, or who are being tested for COVID-19, will not be allowed to have visitors.

Memorial Hospital in Abilene adjusts visitation policy

What a difference a few miles make! Rainfall estimates so far this June show an impressive gradient from north to south across Marion County. 

 A small east to west swath in northern Marion County has only received about a quarter to half inch of rain this month.  Meanwhile, in the south, eight to 10 inches occurred in areas to the north and east of Peabody.   Most of the southern third of the county received at least five inches of rain so far this month. 

 The amounts are based on a combination of radar estimates and observed rainfall.

SPD asks people to abide by laws when discharging fireworks

Bennington State Bank has announced the promotion of Matthew Whitsitt as Jr. Credit Analyst. 

Whitsitt will assist with administering and evaluating the financial aspects of commercial loans. Whitsitt joined Bennington State Bank in February of 2019 as a part-time teller while attending Kansas Wesleyan University.

Whitsitt is a Hesston native and recently graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University with an accounting degree. As a student, Whitsitt was involved with Campus Ministries, Wrestling Team (2018-2019) and DECA. At the state level, Whitsitt helped the KWU DECA team become one of Kansas’s toughest competitors with multiple first place finishes in Business Ethics and Managerial Accounting. This year, Whitsitt received national recognition finishing third in the country for Managerial Accounting.

“We are excited to attract talent like Matthew. Knowing his skills and abilities, we believe he can make immediate impacts to better serve the Central Kansas area,” said Chief Credit Officer Kory Tinkler.

Whitsitt joined Bennington State Bank in February of 2019 as a part-time teller while attending Kansas Wesleyan University.Whitsitt is a Hesston native and recently graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University with an accounting degree. As a student, Whitsitt was involved with Campus Ministries, Wrestling Team (2018-2019) and DECA. At the state level, Whitsitt helped the KWU DECA team become one of Kansas’s toughest competitors with multiple first place finishes in Business Ethics and Managerial Accounting. This year, Whitsitt received national recognition finishing third in the country for Managerial Accounting.“We are excited to attract talent like Matthew. Online enrollment for returning students set for USD 305

A car reported stolen on Thursday in south Salina was found early Saturday morning on its top in a northeast Salina neighborhood.

On Thursday, Michael Hogan, 24, of Salina, reported that his blue 2000 Nissan Altima was stolen from where it was parked near the intersection of Quincy Street and E. Wayne Avenue.

It appeared that whoever was driving the vehicle had tried to back it down the flood control dike along the Smoky Hill River and ended up flipping the car on its top.The car, valued at $1,025, was returned to Hogan, Forrester said.
