The American Red Cross wants you to PUMP Up The Volume!

The annual PUMP Up The Volume Salina Community Blood Drive is scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit Avenue. The blood drive is sponsored by Eagle Radio and its entities: 99 KG, 94.5 Prime FM, KINA, and Salina Post.

Radio listeners are challenged to donate during the three-day drive and vote for their favorite participating radio station. The winning station receives bragging rights and a traveling trophy to display for a year.

Since 2010, the Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive has raised more than 4,125 donations, according to information from the American Red Cross. This year’s goal is 234 donations.

Healthy donors are asked to make an appointment to give at this year’s Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive by using the Blood Donor App, visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://redcrossblood.org/">RedCrossBlood.org</a>, calling 1-800-733-2767 or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

All who donate through June 30 will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift card by email. Restrictions apply and are available at&nbsp;<a href="http://redcrossblood.org/SummerFullOfLife">RedCrossBlood.org/SummerFullOfLife</a>.

According to the American Red Cross, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented challenges to blood donations and in the care and treatment of cancer patients. The Red Cross continues to feel the ongoing effects of COVID-19 as each month roughly 1,000 drives are canceled, impacting the collection of approximately 30,000 units of lifesaving blood.

Additionally, the American Cancer Society reported that many patient visits and procedures were forced to be delayed or canceled early in the pandemic to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. According to the American Cancer Society, while cancer deaths dropped at the onset of the pandemic, those rates will likely increase in the months and years to come due to delays in diagnosis and treatment

This June, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time. Many cancer patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy, will likely have a need for blood products. When donors give blood or platelets to the Red Cross, they’re helping cancer patients receive the care they need.

The 2022 budget, use of electronic cigarettes, and Salina Media Connection are among the items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

Study sessions and city commission meetings will take place in–person in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street, and via Zoom until further notice. Meetings also can be viewed at the City of Salina YouTube channel,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/cityofSalinaKansas">https://www.youtube.com/cityofSalinaKansas</a>.

Commissioners are scheduled to hear the second reading of a proposed ordinance that would amend city code pertaining to prohibitions of smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes in enclosed public places, public meetings, and enclosed places of employment; prohibitions of smoking, the use of electronic cigarettes, and the use of tobacco products in city outdoor recreational areas; and repealing existing sections. According to information from the city, the amendment to current code would "prohibit smoking, the use of electronic cigarettes and tobacco products in general from use in all public recreational areas and within twenty (20) feet of the perimeter of the public recreational areas, with the exception of private property abutting the public recreational areas and the Municipal Golf Course." 

The proposed ordinance was passed on first reading and as of the commission meeting packet being published, the city has received no comments about the proposed ordinance since the first reading.

Commissioners also are scheduled to again discuss the city's agreement with Salina Media Connection. On April 26, commissioners directed staff to bring in house the recording and electronic distribution of public meetings, thus ending Salina Media Connection's cable and online broadcasting of city meetings. The commission also directed staff to "solicit a proposal from Salina Media Connection regarding their funding requirements."

On Monday, the city received a letter from Salina Media Connection requesting a meeting. The meeting between Salina Media Connection representatives and city staff was conducted on Thursday. During that meeting, Salina Media Connection representatives indicated that they would "provide a letter to the City that would include a request to extend the current agreement that is set to expire on June 30, 2021 on a month-by-month basis," according to information in the commission meeting packet. Later that day, city staff received the letter and proposal.

Because of the direction from the commission on April 26, city staff has been working with Cox Communications, Inc., concerning the installation of a new fiber connection and the relocation of equipment from Memorial Hall to the City-County Building, according to information in the commission meeting packet. Additionally, city staff has been working with Eagle Communications to determine additional equipment requirements. (NOTE: Eagle Communications owns Salina Post.)

"If the Commission decides to continue to allow SMC to manage Channel 21, new equipment will need to be ordered and installed in order to manage Channel 20. If the Commission decides to move forward with a full termination of the relationship with SMC equipment that currently (is) being used by SMC can be relocated. This would save the City approximately $50,000," city staff noted in the commission information.

Additionally the city has been contacted by the Salina Public Library about partnering to provide an audio-visual studio that would be available to the public and used by the library to provide classes to the public, according to information from the city.

Other items on the city commission agenda for Monday include the following.

●Consider proclaiming the month of June 2021 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Salina. Brandi Bohm from DVACK is scheduled to read the proclamation.

●Conduct a public hearing to consider adoption of a resolution declaring a structure at 823 Spruce Street to be unsafe and dangerous; directing that the structure be repaired or removed within an established amount of time.

●Consider approving the donation of 90 hemorrhage control kits paid in full by the Salina Police Department Excellence Fund.

●Consider awarding the bid for for city parking lot repairs to Davis Concrete Construction in the amount of $31,295.81 with a five-percent construction contingency for a total project authorization not to exceed $32,860.60, and consider authorizing the city manager to execute a contract with Davis Concrete Construction.

●Consider awarding a bid for chip sealing work to APAC-Kansas, Inc., Shears Division, Salina Branch, in the amount of $162,974.61 with a five-percent construction contingency for a total project authorization not to exceed $171,123.34, and consider authorizing the city manager to execute a contract with APAC-Kansas, Inc., Shears Division, Salina Branch.

●Hear the second reading of a proposed ordinance vacating the existing utility easement located at 3344 Scanlan Avenue.

When Timothy McVeigh made the bomb that would take down the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995, he did it in plain sight, at a state park in Kansas. McVeigh and at least one co-conspirator, Terry Nichols, mixed 4,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate — a common fertilizer — with diesel fuel, and loaded the barrels in the back of a rented Ryder truck, while it was parked at Geary State Fishing Lake.

The location was convenient because McVeigh knew the area, having been stationed at nearby Fort Riley before being discharged in 1991. McVeigh, 26, was a decorated veteran of the first Gulf War, a combat infantryman who left the Army after washing out of Ranger school. He was also a racist and anti-government radical who sought revenge for the standoff at Ruby Ridge, in which a woman was killed by an FBI sniper, and Waco, where 82 Branch Davidians and four federal agents died, with most of the civilians perishing in a fiery conflagration following a 51-day siege.

Nichols was McVeigh’s old Army buddy and partner on the gun show circuit who had purchased a white frame house on South Second Street in Herington, less than 20 miles away from Geary Lake. McVeigh rented the Ryder truck from a body shop at Junction City.

The bomb exploded at 9:02 a.m. Wednesday, April 19.

The federal building was filled with hundreds of people. The blast killed 168, including six children. It remains the worst act of domestic terrorism in American history.

There is a direct line between the Oklahoma City bombing and the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/01/10/this-letter-to-a-young-kansas-journalist-is-for-all-who-care-about-democracy/">Jan. 6 insurrection</a>. The beliefs that drove McVeigh and his co-conspirators, who saw themselves as patriots, are chillingly similar to those that propelled the Capitol insurrectionists, who see themselves as patriots.

But while Oklahoma City was a violent expression of anti-government sentiment by a handful of isolated extremists, the Jan. 6 attack was the coordinated action of hundreds of delusional partisans and violent extremists seeking to destroy the most vital instrument of our democracy — the physical ballots of the Electoral College.

The Oklahoma City bombing was near-universally condemned, but the movement that spawned it existed on the fringes of the American heartland, tolerated by a culture that showed deference to (Christian) religion and the military, mistrusted the government and prized guns as expressions of freedom. Far from the American mainstream, it recruited members through self-published books and newsletters, meetings in the back rooms of gun shows, broadcasts over shortwave radio, handwritten letters and calls from side-of-the-road pay phones.

While the players have changed and the movement has been given the patina of power, if not authority, by a former president who endorses the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen, its poisonous rhetoric remains the same, only now with a vast digital reach.

Let me take you back 20 years, to when I was an investigative writer working on a series about hate groups in the heartland. It’s the first Saturday in December, at a huge gun show at the Tulsa Expo Center, where in a side room&nbsp;<a href="https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/bo-gritz">Bo Gritz</a>&nbsp;is performing his trademark move: He’s tied a United Nations flag to the barrel of a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun and doused the flag in lighter fluid.

Gritz (pronounced “Grites”) has his bona fides. He’s a retired Green Beret colonel, the leader of the Christian Patriot movement, a former Populist Party presidential candidate (a distinction also held by KKK leader David Duke), and the man who helped negotiate an end to the Ruby Ridge standoff.

“I don’t see a single person sitting here that won’t get a chance in their lifetime to say ‘no’ to this New World Order — this Antichrist,” Gritz says.

Then he lights the flag. It burns with a fierce orange flame and malodorous black smoke drifts upwards. Gritz says those who fail to fight will become like the stinking residue, and he cites Revelation 14:11: “And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever.”

Now as then, religion gets mixed up in the philosophy of the extreme right, but it’s a kind of militant racist dogma that most Americans have never heard. Called Christian Identity, it holds three key beliefs, according to the pioneering work of&nbsp;<a href="https://uncpress.org/book/9780807846384/religion-and-the-racist-right/">Michael Barkun</a>, professor emeritus of political science at Syracuse University: Whites are the true descendants of the biblical tribes of Israel, and not modern Jews; the world is on the verge of an apocalyptic struggle between good and evil in which whites must do battle with a worldwide Jewish conspiracy; and Jews and nonwhites are the biological children of Satan, “mud people” without human souls.

While the influence of Christian Identity waned in the years following the Oklahoma City bombing,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/03/magazine/FBI-charlottesville-white-nationalism-far-right.html">it has reemerged</a>&nbsp;in recent years as the extreme right has gained power.

A few of Christian Identity’s most notorious adherents are Eric Rudolph, the 1996 Olympic Park and abortion clinic bomber; members of The Order, a white supremacist group that killed Jewish talk show host Allen Berg in Denver in 1984; and the Aryan Republican Army, probably the most successful bank robbers in American history.

The Aryan Republican Army — also known as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1997/01/09/us/bank-robbery-trial-offers-a-glimpse-of-a-right-wing-world.html">Midwestern Bank Bandits</a>&nbsp;— was a white nationalist gang that, from 1994 to 1996, used pipe bombs as decoys and wore rubber masks representing living U.S. presidents to rob at least 22 banks to finance a cataclysmic race war.

Although they were headquartered in Ohio, one of their safehouses was on a quiet residential street in Pittsburg, Kansas. The gang fell apart after their two leaders, Kevin Langan and Richard Guthrie, had a violent argument over Langan’s cross-dressing. After that some former members turned informant, there was a shootout with the FBI, and Langan and Guthrie were arrested.

At the Pittsburg safehouse, investigators discovered a recruiting video. It showed ski-masked members brandishing automatic weapons and displaying bricks of hundred-dollar bills. “Make no mistake,” intoned a masked man with an assault rifle, as I recall, “we are your neighbors.”

Don’t get me wrong. There is no need to fear your neighbors. Most of them are decent people who would pitch in to help if your house was on fire. But too many of us believe the conspiracy theories that spread like cancer on social media and from our politicians.

There is no reason to believe the government, then or now, has built concentration camps for white Christians, or that the United Nations is seeking to enslave you, or that the coronavirus vaccine was designed to mess with your DNA and turn you zombie. And, if you are among the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.monmouth.edu/polling-institute/reports/monmouthpoll_us_062121/">1 in 3 Americans</a>&nbsp;who believe the Big Lie, let me suggest that not only are you wrong, but you are providing cover to the violent fringe that would overturn our democracy by force.

The choice Americans now face is not one of rival parties and competing ideas. The choice is between democracy and chaos. American democracy has, in our lifetimes, been among the most stable and credible systems of government in the world. That, of course, unraveled under the bizarro world of the former president. But here’s the thing (and I’ll invoke Carl Sagan): extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. There just is no credible evidence of large-scale fraud in the 2020 election.

But there is clear and convincing evidence that the mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 was fueled by conspiracy theories and encouraged to insurrection by the former president and others. In this age of social media, never before has a crime been so well-documented. And the insurrection perfectly fits the FBI’s definition of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fbi.gov/investigate/terrorism">domestic terrorism</a>: “Violent, criminal acts committed by individual and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature.”

The tragedy of Jan. 6 is that so many Americans were seduced into risking imprisonment or even death — and jeopardizing our democracy — in service to a delusion. The seductive old lie says that someone else is always to blame for our problems: the Jews, the Blacks, the United Nations. The lie plays on our faith, our patriotism, our sense of identity. It operates in plain sight. It preys on our fears and counts on being treated with deference because to do otherwise would be to invite scorn, or at least suspicion, from our neighbors.

The lie is easy to sell, because lies are always easier to sell than the truth, whether you’re hawking cigarettes or conspiracy theories. Lies are sexy. The truth is as homely and boring as an old shoe. But if we are to survive our third century as a nation, we must define truth as fact and not as feeling, patriotism as duty and not as loyalty, faith as an expression of love and not of hate.

At least six Kansans were among the more than 500 charged by the Department of Justice for taking part in the Capitol breach. One such Kansan is too many. As Independence Day approaches, let’s chart a path that leads away from Oklahoma City and Jan. 6, far from the ghosts of Geary Lake.

If you regularly travel on Broadway Boulevard, you might want to consider an alternate route this week.

The City of Salina announced that Monday through Friday, APAC Shears of Salina will continue working on the city’s annual asphalt mill and inlay project. The schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

The work consists of milling the existing asphalt street surface 1.5” and replacing it with new asphalt to rehabilitate and preserve the pavement section.  Permanent pavement markings will be placed shortly after the resurfacing.

The work will be completed with lane closures.  Motorists should expect modest delays, and through traffic is encouraged to avoid the work zones altogether if possible.

The $811,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2020 maintenance capital improvement program.

Expect 'modest delays' during mill and inlay work on Broadway

A little spark can get a fire going – or in this case, it might help get entrepreneurship going. I’m referring to an organization named Spark which serves as a hub for resources to support entrepreneurs.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sarah Siders is executive director of Spark.&nbsp;A Kansas State University graduate in social work, she left Manhattan briefly and planned to work overseas but came back a year later.&nbsp;She got married, went to graduate school for clinical social work with the goal of becoming a therapist, and then worked in the mental health department at Fort Riley’s Irwin Army Community Hospital.&nbsp;She and her husband also serve as a co-pastors of a Manhattan-based church, The Well.&nbsp;After nine years in the mental health field, she opened her own business.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;“When I started my own counseling and coaching practice, I found I loved the business side of things,” Sarah said.&nbsp;She joined the organizing team of the 1 Million Cups entrepreneurship organization, worked closely with some of the original founders of the Manhattan co-working space called The Fellow, and wrote for Manhattan Business News.&nbsp;In 2019, colleagues encouraged her to run for Manhattan City Commission, which she did but was not elected.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;“Five days after the election, a member of the organizing team recruited me to help develop a new entrepreneurship nonprofit organization in Manhattan called Spark,” Sarah said.&nbsp;In the first few months, Sarah developed Spark's branding and took the lead on the proposal securing the bulk of Spark's funding.&nbsp;In July 2020, Sarah was selected as executive director and the organization earned 501(c)3 status.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Spark has “a vision to connect, resource, and successfully launch entrepreneurs and promote a dynamic and inclusive culture of entrepreneurship and innovation in the greater Manhattan region.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We spent the first six months doing a lot of listening to what business groups and resources were already doing,” Sarah said.&nbsp;“Everything we do is through collaboration and partnerships.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Spark is sponsored by Kansas State University Innovation Partners, the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, Kansas Gas Service, and a private donor. It partners with the Small Business Development Center, K-State Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship, Network Kansas, Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills, Pottawatomie County Economic Development, K-State Research and Extension - Riley County, and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We want to serve as a hub where entrepreneurs can connect with resources to support them,” Sarah said.&nbsp;

She believes everyone has a role. “We are all part of the entrepreneurial network, whether you’re an investor, entrepreneur or business owner, service provider, or buying local,” she said. “That’s why we call it an entrepreneurial ecosystem, we’re all connected.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Spark logo is carefully and intentionally designed.&nbsp;“It is all lowercase letters, because a spark starts small,” Sarah said.&nbsp;The logo also has different shades of color.&nbsp;“It starts with the light of a bright idea and progressively moves to the deep dark red of established growth,” she said.&nbsp;“As we go forward, we’ll be targeting industry-specific innovation that our region is uniquely designed to support.”&nbsp;

Spark continues to support 1 Million Cups, an area pitch competition called Startup MHK, and is currently offering an entrepreneurship business basics class.&nbsp;“We’re based in Manhattan, but we want to support people across the region,” Sarah said.&nbsp;For example, she told about a business which she had worked with in the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of St. Marys, population 2,627 people.&nbsp;Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We need investors to help provide the resources to support entrepreneurs,” Sarah said.&nbsp;“We encourage those who are in the pre-venture or early stages of starting a business to contact us.&nbsp;

&nbsp;“We want to tell the story that greater Manhattan is a great place to start and grow a business,” Sarah said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina's Lakewood among the fishing derby locations

PRATT – The 2021 Great Kansas Fishing Derby, going on now, started May 1 with more than 500 fish tagged and scattered in 35 lakes throughout the state. 

Several different species were tagged, including black bass, crappie, bluegill, redear sunfish, drum, carp, walleye, and catfish.

Halfway through the Derby, 80 tagged fish have been caught statewide. But, thanks to additional sponsors, more tags have been added to select locations, resulting in more than 450 tags yet to be redeemed. So far, winners have received gift cards, paddle sport rentals, fireworks, and gear for camping, cooking, and fishing. All prizes have a minimum value of $20, with some as high as $100 until now, that is.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) has announced that one tagged fish was added to each participating lake, excluding KDOT West, worth a $250 KDWPT gift card! The gift card can be used towards licenses and permits, camping fees at Kansas state parks, boat registrations, or magazine subscriptions.

Anglers just need a fishing license, unless exempt, to participate. When a tagged fish is caught, anglers will need to remove the tag and visit&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ksfishderby.com/" target="_blank">ksfishderby.com</a>&nbsp;to enter the code. Prizes will be mailed, and certificates will be emailed to winners, which can then be taken to a local sponsor in exchange for a prize. Anglers and non-anglers can also enter a raffle drawing for a chance to win a weekly prize.

If that’s not enough motivation to participate, how about a chance to win a lifetime hunting and fishing license? All anglers who catch and redeem a Great Kansas Fishing Derby tag will be entered into additional prize drawings, with one lucky winner receiving a lifetime license.  New prizes added to Great Kansas Fishing Derby; Lakewood included

Today is Sunday, June 27, the 178th day of 2021. There are 187 days left in the year. 

On June 27, 1950, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution calling on member nations to help South Korea repel an invasion from the North. 

In 1787, English historian Edward Gibbon completed work on his six-volume work, "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire."

In 1880, author-lecturer Helen Keller, who lived most of her life without sight or hearing, was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. 

In 1942, the FBI announced the arrests of eight Nazi saboteurs put ashore in Florida and Long Island, New York. (All were tried and sentenced to death; six were executed while two were spared for turning themselves in and cooperating with U.S. authorities.)

Ten years ago: Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was convicted by a federal jury in Chicago on a wide range of corruption charges, including the allegation that he'd tried to sell or trade President Barack Obama's U.S. Senate seat. (Blagojevich was later sentenced to 14 years in prison; his sentence was commuted by President Donald Trump in February 2020.) International judges ordered the arrest of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi for murdering civilians. Venus and Serena Williams were eliminated in the fourth round of Wimbledon, the first time in five years that neither sister advanced to the quarterfinals at the All England Club.

Five years ago: The U.S. Supreme Court issued its strongest defense of abortion rights in a quarter-century, striking down Texas' widely replicated rules that sharply reduced abortion clinics. The Supreme Court overturned the bribery conviction of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, sending the case back to a lower court. (Prosecutors ended up deciding not to retry McDonnell.)

One year ago: Florida set another daily record for the state in the number of daily confirmed coronavirus cases, with more than 9,500 new cases. Thousands of people gathered outside a police building in suburban Denver to call for justice in the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who'd been put in a chokehold by police in August 2019; he suffered cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital and was later declared brain dead. Princeton University said it would remove the name of former President Woodrow Wilson from its public policy school because of his segregationist views. French cosmetics giant L'Oreal said it would remove words like "whitening" from its skin care products following criticism of the company amid global protests against racism.

Security Council passed a resolution calling on member nations to help South Korea repel an invasion from the North. On this date: In 1787, English historian Edward Gibbon completed work on his six-volume work, "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire."In 1880, author-lecturer Helen Keller, who lived most of her life without sight or hearing, was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In 1942, the FBI announced the arrests of eight Nazi saboteurs put ashore in Florida and Long Island, New York. (All were tried and sentenced to death; six were executed while two were spared for turning themselves in and cooperating with U.S. authorities.) In 1944, during World War II, American forces liberated the French port of Cherbourg from the Germans. In 1955, Illinois enacted the nation's first automobile seat belt law. Salina's Groopman graduates from Ohio University

Salina Adult Education Center is seeking individuals to fill two adult basic education instructor positions immediately.&nbsp; Instructors teach reading, writing and math through algebra. Must be proficient in MS Office, Google Docs and able to learn new software quickly.&nbsp; Ability to teach students on site and remotely and work as part of an instructional team critical.&nbsp;
