ELLSWORTH COUNTY —A Kansas woman died in an accident just after 2p.m. Wednesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Danielle Dee Hoskins, 40, Great Bend, was westbound on Interstate 70 just east of the Kansas 156 exit in the right lane. The driver attempted to cross the median at a crossover.&nbsp;

A westbound 2014 Volvo semi driven by Robert L. Mueller, 64,&nbsp;Murfreesboro, TN, in the left lane struck the drivers side of the Chrysler. Both vehicles came to rest in the median.

Hoskins was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Parson's Funeral Home. 

EMS transported passengers in the Chrysler identified as Grace Dee Hoskins, 17, Great Bend, to Ellsworth County Medical Center and 13-year-old Shay Hoskins of Great Bend to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; Mueller was not injured. All four were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

COVID-19 Delta variant on the rise in Saline County

WICHITA – A Kansas man was sentenced to 60 months in prison for his role as getaway driver in an armed gas station robbery, according to the United State Attorney.

In April 2021, Jeremiah Urias, 19, of Wichita pleaded guilty to one count of robbery.

According to court documents, Urias was charged in connection with the robbery of an EZ Trip gas station in Newton in February of 2020. Urias waited in the vehicle while two accomplices entered the business and demanded money from the clerk at gunpoint. 

After Urias and his accomplices drove away from the scene, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper spotted the vehicle and a high-speed chase ensued. The chase ended when Urias’ vehicle was involved in an accident with another vehicle on E. Magnolia Road in Salina. Urias then fled on foot. The two accomplices remained in the vehicle after the accident and were arrested, and Urias was eventually captured by law enforcement.

“We want to make it clear to all persons who willingly participate in crimes that they can be subject to prosecution no matter their role,” said Acting U.S Attorney Duston Slinkard. “Although the defendant may not have personally entered the business or pointed a gun at the employee, he was still responsible for participating in the robbery, and the Court held him accountable.”

City of Salina provides info about new waste carts

GYPSUM - The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of an inoperable SUV from Gypsum.

Author Cathey, 37, of Gypsum, told deputies that sometime between 6 p.m. Monday and 1 p.m. Tuesday, someone stole an inoperable white 2000 Ford Excursion from his property, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. 

The SUV had a Kansas license plate of 351GPE and was valued at $2,500.

Melander asked that anyone who might have noticed the vehicle being towed or transported to contact the sheriff's office at (785) 826-6500.

Salina police are looking for whoever drilled a hole in the gas tank of a van at the Lakewood Discovery Center earlier this week.

An employee at the center, which is owned by the City of Salina, told police that sometime between 5 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday, someone drilled a half-inch hole in the gas tank of a 2018 Ford X2CB van, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The center is located at 250 Lakewood Drive.

The tank had been filled on Monday with approximately 25 gallons of gasoline, he said.

A Trenton, Ohio, man was seriously injured while working at the Signify lighting production facility Tuesday morning.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that deputies and emergency personnel were sent to the facility at 3861 S. Ninth Street at approximately 9:30 a.m. Tuesday for the report of an industrial accident.

A 40-year-old Trenton, Ohio, man working for Hosea Project Movers, headquartered in Covington, Ky., backed into a hole, fell 20 feet, went into a chute and fell another 20 feet before hitting the concrete floor, Melander said. 

The company was hired to remove a furnace inside the facility, he said.

The man was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with serious injuries to the back of his skull, spine, and rib cage, Melander said. The man later was transferred to a Topeka hospital, he added.

Worker seriously injured in fall at Signify facility Tuesday

Two people were injured when a pickup rear-ended an SUV that had slowed to turn into the drive of a club Tuesday afternoon.

Eugene Alexander, 71, of Salina, was eastbound in the 1500 block of Old 40 Highway at approximately 4:40 p.m. Tuesday and turning into the drive of a club when the 2008 Mazda Tribute he was driving was rear-ended by a 1998 Chevrolet 1500 pickup driven by Clifford Gustus, Jr., 42, Kanopolis, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning.

Both drivers were evaluated by EMS personnel and both had possible injuries, Melander said. They both indicated that they would seek medical attention on their own if necessary.

The Tribute had to be towed from the scene. The pickup will have to be removed by Gustus, Melander said.

Gustus was cited for following too closely, Melander said.

Police are looking for a black car with purple flames that may have a connection to a Tuesday afternoon residential burglary in west Salina.

Christopher Lang, 37, of Salina, told police that he arrived home at approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday. He unlocked his front door, went inside, and then took his dogs out in the back yard, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Lang said he was only outside for approximately five minutes.

When he went back in the house, he discovered that his Sony PS5 gaming console and controller were missing, Forrester said. The two items together were valued at $1,000.

Witnesses told police that a smaller black car, possibly a Mitsubishi Eclipse, with purple flames was seen driving on the wrong side of the street. One witness said the car slowed down in front of Lang's residence, Forrester said.

PS5 console, controller stolen while owner in backyard with dogs

A wayward bull succumbed to injuries suffered in a single-vehicle accident early this morning north of Salina.

A 17-year-old Bennington boy was northbound in the 1900 block of N. Ohio Street when the 2011 Chrysler 300 he was driving struck a "very large" black bull in the roadway, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. The accident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The teen was not injured, however, the car sustained extensive damage and had to be towed, Melander said.

The bull was believed to be an Angus, however, it had no tags or markings. Deputies checked the immediate area, but no one claimed the deceased bovine, Melander said. 

Anyone with information about who owns the bull is asked to contact the Saline County Sheriff's Office at (785) 826-6500, Melander said.

Many pilot students have fellow aviators to look up to and seek advice and support from, but for women in the aviation industry, this kind of camaraderie can be harder to find.&nbsp;<a href="https://polytechnic.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Polytechnic Campu</a>s is changing that. K-State Polytechnic's interim chief pilot Brandy Shaw and assistant chief pilot Karen Morrison are both accomplished female pilots and are in rare company. According to the Women in Aviation International, only 7.9% of pilots are female. It is because of this leadership, in part, that K-State Polytechnic has seen a rise in women joining its&nbsp;<a href="https://polytechnic.k-state.edu/academics/degree-options/professional-pilot/" target="_blank">professional pilot program</a>. From the start of the 2019 academic year, the professional pilot program has seen the number of female students nearly double. Twelve percent of all professional pilot students on the campus, located in Salina, are female. The number of women passing check rides — where students prove they understand and can perform specific maneuvers and pass a challenging written exam — has set a record for the campus and shows great promise for increasing the impact of women in the aviation industry as a whole. "In spring semester completions alone, from February to June, we saw eight women complete successful check rides," Shaw said. "It's an incredible impact on our campus and I'm excited to see the future of the aviation industry."

The uptick in the number of female pilot students, who come from around the world, at K-State Polytechnic can be attributed to a more diversified recruitment strategy and positive, supportive mentorship from other female pilots, according to Shaw and Morrison. Along with her role as assistant chief pilot, Morrison is also the advisor for the K-State Polytechnic chapter of Women in Aviation, an organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation career fields. She is excited to see both men and women passionate about the cause and becoming active chapter members. "It's been an exciting adventure advising Women in Aviation," Morrison said. "My favorite part is when we show younger kids all the different sides to the aviation industry and hopefully inspire them to dream big." Having women in leadership roles at K-State Polytechnic also is beneficial for students when looking at their future careers. Heather Thummel, sophomore in professional pilot from&nbsp;Topeka, said it paints a picture of the future. "It's inspirational to see women in leadership roles and it shows me that I can do that one day, too," Thummel said. Thummel wants to be part of the new Wildcat Mentor program, created by fellow professional pilot student Trey Varner, to let future female pilots know they are not alone and can pave their own way. "Being involved in the Wildcat Mentor program can show younger students that, as upperclassmen, we've been where you are and you can do this too," Thummel said. "There's a camaraderie that is shared among the female pilots to let each other know you support them." Morrison said a common desire of her students is to serve as mentors for incoming students. "All of our successful pilot students are driven and aspirational," Morrison said. "They have a desire to show younger kids interested in aviation that your dream is possible — we're doing it, so can you, and we're here to support you."&nbsp;&nbsp;

It’s wheat harvest time in central Kansas! I always know harvest will arrive, but it also always seems to sneak up on me. This year it seems to have snuck up a bit more than usual as we are still catching up from dealing with our wicked weather from a month ago. &nbsp; We are still replanting fields damaged by hail or flooded by rain. Our days leading up to this year’s harvest have included the regular preparation for summer and harvest, as well as a lot of unanticipated extras.&nbsp; &nbsp; Extra time has been needed in the fields replanting, spraying and cultivating while also dealing with insurance claims, adjustors, contractors, windshield repairs, dent repairs and a roofing crew. There’s definitely been a lot of those unexpected extras this year leading up to summer harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp; Thankfully, we have wonderful helpers who have been able to assist with the needed annual tasks that must be done prior to and during harvest. From preparing irrigation, laying pipe, servicing the tractors, trucks and combines, helping with irrigation repairs, cutting wheat and delivering the grain, we have a great group of people helping us. &nbsp; I realized a few days ago this is the first year in a very long time that I do not have a personal helper of my own this summer. Normally I would have a teenage girl helping me with the kids and household chores during the summer months. I called these helpers my “right-hand gals” because the job wasn’t just babysitting. &nbsp; In the past, I’d be able to leave the kids with my helper when I’d need to quickly drive out to a field to shuttle equipment or crew members to another location. Sometimes I would need to drive to another town to get machine parts. It was wonderful to have a helper who I could leave in charge of the house and kids to be able to complete all the necessary and unscheduled tasks associated with summer and harvest. &nbsp; My helper’s main role was to keep the day moving forward whether I was at home with the kids or not. At times, the job would require prepping food or baking cookies for our harvest crew. Sometimes it entailed loading and unloading the dishwasher or the laundry. Sometimes it meant reading books to the kids, making sure they were put down for their scheduled naps or lifeguarding when the kids would take an afternoon dip in our stock tank pool. &nbsp; Having a “right-hand gal” helped keep the kids rested and on a schedule. Summer on the farm and wheat harvest is incredibly exciting to participate in, but it’s also tiring for everyone involved. Between the hot, dry winds constantly blowing, and the long days and nights of work, it’s understandable why adults might — on occasion — get cranky. I’m sure one can imagine how the intense harvest schedule would affect a child if not properly rested!&nbsp; &nbsp; But as in all of life, this year I am reminded that seasons continually change, and my right-hand gals are grown and gone. My son has transitioned to helping more on the farm this summer. He’s now shadowing his daddy and grandpa, helping the men service machines by handing them tools, riding in the combine and helping with irrigation. I no longer fill a sippy cup and strap him into his car seat. Instead, he fills his own water jug daily and is doing his part helping with summer tasks on the farm under the supervision of some pretty patient people. &nbsp; My daughter is now another little helper. She’s transitioned to helping with laundry and baking cookies with her grandma. Now, whenever I have to jump in a vehicle to complete a pressing task, my little assistant is usually with me. Most of the time she’s happy to tag along as long as she has a book or two with her. But sometimes when the day gets tough, the immediate playing of a requested soundtrack and the promise of a frozen drink or popsicle usually helps.&nbsp; Yes, I’ve always been aware and thankful for the wonderful help we have especially during the summer months. This year, I have become acutely more aware of the blessing of helpers — both big and small.

INSIGHT: Helpers big and small

WICHITA – Despite the highest gas prices in seven years, the vast majority of travel – 91% – this Independence Day holiday weekend will be by car.

“Travel is in full swing this summer, as Americans eagerly pursue travel opportunities they’ve deferred for the last year-and-a-half,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “We saw strong demand for travel around Memorial Day and the kick-off of summer, and all indications now point to a busy Independence Day holiday weekend, with the Great American Road Trip the preferred mode of travel.”

●More than 47.7 million Americans will take to the nation’s roadways, skies and other modes of travel this Independence Day (July 1–5), as travel volumes are expected to nearly fully recover to pre-pandemic levels.

●This will be the second highest Independence Day travel volume on record, trailing only 2019. Overall, just 2.5% fewer Americans are expected to travel this year compared to Independence Day in 2019.

●This year’s nationwide traveler projection represents an increase of nearly 40% compared to last year, when total travel fell to 34.2 million.

 ●An expected 43.6 million Americans (91%) will drive to their destinations, the highest on record for this holiday and 5% more than the previous record set in 2019.&nbsp; &nbsp;

INRIX, in collaboration with AAA, predicts drivers will experience the worst congestion heading into the holiday weekend as commuters leave work early and mix with holiday travelers, along with the return trip on Monday mid-day.

AAA’s advice is to avoid traveling on Thursday and Friday afternoon, along with Monday mid-day.&nbsp;

●Over the holiday weekend, AAA expects to rescue more than 1,500 stranded motorists in Kansas and more than 460,000 nationwide.

Before hitting the road, AAA reminds motorists to plan their route in advance and ensure their vehicle is road ready, to help avoid a breakdown along the way.

“Dead batteries, flat tires, and other engine problems requiring a tow will be among leading reasons AAA members will call us for assistance,” said Steward. “Although we are always available to help, we hate to see people spending part of their vacation stranded along the roadside. So in an effort to ensure cars are road-ready, travelers are advised to have their vehicles inspected by trusted repair shops, including&nbsp;<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d84%3c3%3c2-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=435744&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">AAA Approved Auto Repair centers</a>.”

The 43.6 million Americans expected to travel by car this Independence Day can expect gas prices to be the most expensive since 2014.

●At $3.09 to start off the holiday week, the national gas price average is at its highest of the year and not stopping. That average is expected to increase, possibly as much as another nickel, in the lead up to the Independence Day holiday weekend.

●In Kansas, the average gas price as of Monday, June 28 is $2.87, up 4 cents in the past week, but still 11th&nbsp;cheapest in the nation.

●For Kansans driving relatively close to home, the good news is that several nearby states rank even better in cheapest prices in the country: Texas (3rd&nbsp;cheapest), Arkansas (4), Oklahoma (6) and Missouri (7).

There are things motorists can do to increase fuel efficiency and save money when they fill up:

●Tune up your vehicle and replace air filters. 

●Remove excess weight from your vehicle. 

●Stick to the speed limit and avoid jackrabbit starts. 

●Only purchase premium gasoline if required by your vehicle specifications. 

●Otherwise stick to more affordable regular unleaded fuel.

●Download the AAA mobile app, which helps locate the nearest gas stations, and lists gas prices, along your route.

July 4 travel outlook: Road trips, roadside rescues, rising gas prices

Today is Wednesday, June 30, the 181st day of 2021. There are 184 days left in the year. 

On June 30, 1971, the Supreme Court ruled, 6-3, that the government could not prevent The New York Times or The Washington Post from publishing the Pentagon Papers. 

In 1865, eight people, including Mary Surratt and Dr. Samuel Mudd, were convicted by a military commission of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln. (Four defendants, including Surratt, were executed; Mudd was sentenced to life in prison, but was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson in 1869.)

Responding to the needs of Kansas families, program changes are coming to Rock Springs camps&nbsp;

MANHATTAN — Over the last 75 years, thousands of Kansas 4-H’ers have enjoyed the traditional three-day, four-night Rock Springs Ranch experience of a county-wide camp that included activities such as horseback riding, archery, swimming, crafts, campfires, talent shows and leadership experiences. &nbsp;

Changes to expand and diversify camp program options are coming next year, according to Kansas 4-H Foundation president Jake Worcester.&nbsp;

Beginning in 2022, parents and their youth will be able to select from an expanded calendar of camp experiences.&nbsp;

“In the past, families were given one set of dates that their youth could attend camp,” Worcester said. “Looking ahead, there will be options for a traditional experience as well as longer experiences and additional leadership development opportunities &nbsp;

Through these experiences, Worcester said, he hopes youth from age seven through their college years will stay connected to 4-H activities and development opportunities Rock Springs Ranch. &nbsp;

“Next year families will have 7 to 8 weeks that they can choose from for a camp experience,” Worcester said. Those new dates and registration information will be posted on the&nbsp;<a href="https://rockspringsranch.org/" target="_blank">Rock Springs Ranch website</a>&nbsp;on Sept. 1.&nbsp;

Along with the scheduling changes, there will also be program changes to ensure a high-quality camp experience, said Wade Weber, Kansas 4-H program leader.&nbsp;

“We’ve looked to our peers in the camping industry and monitored the landscape of our professional programming,” he said. “There have been changes in youth development when it comes to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for young people.” &nbsp;

A task force has been working for more than two years to implement purposeful changes to enable 4-H youth to have the highest-quality camp experience possible, Weber said. &nbsp;

4-H camp expanding and diversifying in 2022

Showers will remain most numerous across south-central and southeast Kansas tonight through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Locally heavy rainfall may result in minor lowland flooding.

For Salina, the weather service is forecasting a 40-percent chance for showers tonight and then a 40-percent chance for showers and then thunderstorms on Wednesday.
