Leadership academy at K-State draws youth from across the country&nbsp;

MANHATTAN – Eleven students from four states gathered on the Kansas State University campus and online to gain livestock industry knowledge and develop leadership skills during the K-State Animal Science Leadership Academy held June 15-18.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;hybrid format included virtual instruction, followed by a closing, one-day, in-person experience on campus.&nbsp;

Hosted by the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council, Inc., the academy’s goal is to develop young leaders within the livestock industry and prepare them for a successful future in this field.&nbsp;

This year’s class included&nbsp;Emma Aufdemberge, Leavenworth; Jodee Borgerding, Marysville;&nbsp;Brynn Collier, Mound City; Lucie Dolenc, Boulder, Colo.; Helaina Fowler, Lewistown, Mont.;Lane Fritz, Gypsum; Ashtyn Jolly, Lancaster; Kyanna Lankton, LeRoy; Logan Ohlde, Winchester; Calley Stubbs, Wallace; and Lauren Thompson, Woodville, Wis.&nbsp;

During their time at KASLA, students participated in interactive leadership development and educational sessions led by faculty members from across the K-State campus.&nbsp;

“I not only learned about the vast Kansas agriculture industry, I learned my leadership strengths and how I can best use them to advocate for the industry in the future,” Thompson said.&nbsp;

“I now have a potential toolbox full of career paths and a network of industry professionals to help me make decisions about my future along the way. Wonderful mentors, speakers, and members of the K-State faculty, and current K-State students made my time at KASLA a very positive and educational experience.”&nbsp;

KASLA also included two days of virtual livestock industry tours hosted by Hildebrand Farms Dairy, Junction City; Kansas Livestock Association, Topeka; Bichelmeyer Meats, Kansas City; Gardiner Angus Ranch, Ashland; and Blythe Family Farms, White City.&nbsp;

Student also toured university farms, department facilities and the K-State campus. Evening activities included game night and a virtual escape room to help students get to know each other and use their problem-solving skills.&nbsp;

The Independence Day holiday brings with it local government closings.

City and county offices and facilities will be closed Monday in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. Regular hours will resume Tuesday.

Additionally, there will be no Salina City Commission meeting on Monday.

The Monday schedule for the city's General Services work groups is as follows:

Sanitation, Landfill and Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center (SDRC). Sanitation, Landfill and SDRC crews will maintain normal operating hours.

General Services Office. By phone only, General Services administrative staff will be available during normal operating hours.

Household Hazardous Waste. The Household Hazardous Waste facility will be closed Monday, with appointments by phone resuming Tuesday, and normal operating hours resuming Thursday.

City, county holiday closings announced

A Salina man was in critical condition after a motorcycle-car accident late Thursday morning in southwest Salina. 

A 2017 Toyota Corolla driven by Chance Kreifels, 19, of Wellington, was eastbound in the 1400 block of W. Schilling Road when a westbound 2010 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle driven by Chris Martin, 54, of Salina, crossed the center line and struck the Corolla, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The accident occurred at approximately 11:50 a.m. Thursday.

Martin was ejected from the motorcycle. He was transported to Salina Regional Health Center and then to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita in critical condition, Forrester said.

The motorcycle was destroyed. The Corolla had damage down the driver's side, but was removed from the scene by Kreifels.

The incident remains under investigation.

On June 23, Salina Police officers took a report that indicated a theft occurred at West Crawford Laundry, 1515 W. Crawford Street.

The victim reported approximately $500 was taken from several vending machines in the facility.

Video from the scene showed the crime happened on June 22 between 3:35-4:05 p.m. The person responsible for the theft appeared to be a white male, bald, wearing a black T-shirt and shorts.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about theft at laundry

now share her name with asteroid 40706 (1999 RO240). The space rock is now

"This asteroid was initially discovered on Sept. 11,
1999, my 18th birthday," said Milam, a bit more seriously. "That
was also during my first semester at KWU! I'm honored to be the first KWU alum
to achieve this unique honor." 

While the earliest recorded asteroids were named for
mythological figures, the Minor Planet Center – an organization run at the
Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Massachusetts – now controls the
naming process. This group is responsible for charting and collecting data
regarding various asteroids, as well as accepting proposals for naming. That
process can take many months, but the finalization of the naming process was
revealed in the June 11 edition of the International Astronomical Union’s WG
Small Bodies Nomenclature bulletin.

Milam is the James Webb Space Telescope deputy project
scientist for planetary science at the Astrochemistry Laboratory in the NASA
Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. She is an
expert in rotational spectroscopy, observations, and laboratory modeling of
astrochemistry and molecular astrophysics of the interstellar medium, evolved
stars, star formation regions, and comets with an emphasis on isotopic
fractionation and astrobiology of primitive materials. 

Among her many efforts, Milam maintains a renowned observational program with radio telescopes
around the world, and with space-based observatories, to routinely observe
comets as part of an international collaboration. She was the 2019 KWU
Commencement speaker.

Kansas Wesleyan alumna Milam receives celestial honor 

The City of Salina reminds sanitation customers that the transition to new waste carts will begin next week.

Beginning Monday, the new City of Salina waste carts will begin to be delivered and all old city trash and yard waste carts will start to be removed. 

The city asks that customers on the first regular collection day on or after Monday set out all old existing trash and yard waste carts for collection and removal.

"If customers receive their new waste cart(s), and their old trash and yard waste carts were not removed, please leave the old carts out and empty until they are. The old carts should be removed over the next day at the latest, if not immediately. If customers find that their new waste cart(s) were not delivered the week of July 5, please setout all existing waste carts the week of July 12 as normal, to be collected and removed," the city noted in a news release.

An information packet containing the new waste collection map and new sanitation collection guidelines will be attached to the new waste carts upon delivery, the city noted. The new waste collection map and new sanitation collection guidelines will take effect July 19.

City of Salina waste cart transition set to begin Monday

Focus on safety for all during July 4th holiday weekend.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Office of the State Fire Marshal, and Safe Kids Kansas remind Kansans of the importance of safety this Independence Day.

Make sure your gatherings are safe for everyone by following public health guidance regarding COVID-19 and following safety recommendations for fireworks and outdoor grills, the organizations noted.

In 2020, there were a total of 180 injuries caused by fireworks in Kansas, an increase from 2019. The person igniting the firework was most likely to be injured and hands were the most common body part to be injured. 

More than half of injuries occurring from fireworks happened on the 4th of July and most persons received burns. The majority of injuries occurred to those between the ages of 25 and 34; but there was also an increase in injuries to those between the ages of 45 and 54. The highest number of injuries were caused by mortars or artillery fireworks. 

Data was collected through voluntary reporting from Kansas hospitals and administered by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

“Remember that fireworks are explosives and should be handled with care,” said Cherie Sage, director of Safe Kids Kansas, said. “Children should not light fireworks, including sparklers, which burn at a temperature hot enough to melt glass. We encourage parents to let their little ones use glow sticks instead of sparklers and leave the rest to grownups.”

●Have adults supervise around grills and fireworks

●Designate a child-free safety zone around areas where fireworks are being ignited

●Have a first-aid kit on hand, and make sure its contents are updated and ready to use

●Never try to re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks

●Never attempt to make your own fireworks

●Dispose of used fireworks carefully, as they may reignite

Grilling is another favorite part of many 4th of July gatherings. Make sure grills are used outdoors only, away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Have a water supply near your grill. 

Keep children and pets away from the grill area and make sure your grill area is always supervised by an adult. Clean your grill regularly to prevent grease fires.

“We want everyone to have a fun and safe celebration on Independence Day,” Doug Jorgensen, State Fire Marshal, said.  “Taking a few simple precautions if you’re lighting off fireworks or grilling can ensure that your family and friends are safe and injury free this fourth of July. If possible, go to a public fireworks display, and let the trained professionals handle the risks.”

The Fourth of July may be a fun and noisy celebration for many people, but a Kansas State University veterinarian says that's not the case for some pets.

"This holiday is often a time filled with fear and anxiety for some pets — and it can also be a dangerous time for them as well," said Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the K-State Veterinary Health Center, a part of the College of Veterinary Medicine. "It is best to speak to your veterinarian now about medication options if needed, especially since the majority of fireworks will be set off over the weekend this year when your veterinarian’s office will likely be closed."

Nelson offers some tips to help keep pets safe this holiday. The first: Keep your pet indoors for the most part, and under leash control when you do need to take them outside.

"The sound of fireworks can make some pets run off in an attempt to get away from the noise," Nelson said. "In fact, this is the time of year with the highest incidence of runaway pets, so be sure to keep them secure."

She recommends making sure your pet has some type of ID, such as a tag and/or microchip, in case it should get lost. Ideally, it should have both.

"Many dogs will appreciate being in the safe confines of their crate and will do fine if allowed to stay there," Nelson said. "A secure room may also work as well. Be sure to close the blinds or use heavy curtains to block out the flashes of light."

Nelson also suggests the following to help calm a pet who gets rattled by loud noises:

●Play soothing music or turn on the TV or white noise machine in an attempt to block out the loud crackles and booms.

●Trying an anxiety wrap specially made for pets may help calm those with mild anxiety.

●Using over-the-counter medications made for anxious pets may benefit those with mild to moderate noise anxiety.

●Consider temporarily relocating your pet to a quieter friend/relative's house or kennel during this time.

●Talk to your veterinarian about prescription anti-anxiety medications if your pet has a severe noise phobia. Several different medications are available to help treat anxiety due to loud noises. Have the medication ready to give on the first day that fireworks are allowed to begin in your community.

Just as with young children, Nelson said it is important to keep dangerous items out of your pet's reach and not apply products on pets that aren't labeled for safe use on them.

"These include lighters, punks, matches, lighter fluid, glow jewelry, citronella candles/oils, insect coils and repellants and fireworks, both unlit and lit," Nelson said.

Even if your dog is not bothered by fireworks, Nelson said it is still subject to being burned or injured by fireworks if it gets too close or attempts to retrieve one that has been ignited. Many fireworks also contain toxic chemicals if ingested.

Another product to avoid using on pets can be some insect repellants, Nelson said.

"Mosquitoes are often out in force this time of year, but don't be tempted to spray your pet with insect repellants that contain DEET as it is toxic for them," she said. "Only apply insect repellants that state they are safe to use on pets."

Human foods and beverages also pose dangers to pets.

"Pets often experience vomiting and/or diarrhea when given foods they are not used to eating," Nelson said. "And some foods, such as chocolate, macadamia nuts, onions, grapes or raisins, coffee, salt and yeast-based bread dough are all potentially toxic for your pet."

When ingested, fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis, while corncobs, bones and wooden barbeque skewers can cause blockage of the intestinal tract if swallowed. Nelson also said to keep any foods or candies sweetened with artificial sweeteners, such as xylitol, out of reach as they can be toxic to pets.

Another no-no for pets is alcoholic beverages. 

"Keep the beer and wine out of their reach," Nelson said.

Data was collected through voluntary reporting from Kansas hospitals and administered by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.“Remember that fireworks are explosives and should be handled with care,” said Cherie Sage, director of Safe Kids Kansas, said. “Children should not light fireworks, including sparklers, which burn at a temperature hot enough to melt glass. Today in History - July 2

Salina Area Technical College will look a lot different in just a few weeks.

The college has formally taken ownership of its campus land and buildings from the Salina School District, effective today.

When the college became independent of the school district in 2009, the campus and its buildings remained the property of the district. Ownership was to have transferred to the college in 2018, but legal issues related to groundwater contamination under the old airbase kept that from happening until now.

In addition, the district is transferring ownership of the Salina Adult Education Center, located just south of the campus, along with roughly two acres of land and an additional parking lot. The district will lease the Adult Education Center building back from Salina Tech for 10 years, with an option to renew the lease for an additional 10 years. Overall, the campus covers just over 24 acres.

“USD 305 and Salina Area Technical College have been working toward this transition for years. The leadership at Salina Tech has made it a priority to develop strong programming to support the needs of our community. We’re glad to see this day come and appreciate our working relationship with SATC that made it possible.” said Linn Exline, superintendent of Salina Public Schools. “The land upon which Salina Tech’s campus is located should be owned by Salina Tech.”

The lease agreement was approved at Monday’s meeting of the college’s Board of Trustees, which also approved a contract with Diehl Enterprises of Salina for demolition of Building G on campus – unofficially known as the “Blue Building.” In the 1980s and 1990s, the building housed Salina Tech’s Automotive Technology and Diesel Technology programs. After new buildings for those programs were completed in the early 2000s, it was used for storage and then abandoned entirely about two years ago because of structural issues.

Demolition is scheduled to begin in mid-July and be finished by the end of the month.

“This project will definitely improve our ‘curb appeal,’” said Salina Tech President Greg Nichols. “When people drive by the campus on Centennial, that blue building is what they notice. It will also free up much-needed space for more student parking. It is our desire to make Salina Tech a first-choice destination for students.”

Salina Animal Services to have adoption event Saturday

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) Behavioral Health Services Commission has selected awardees to receive more than $534,000 in FY22 Kansas Prevention Collaborative-Community Initiative (KPCCI) grants. 

The goal of KPCCI is to reduce and prevent substance abuse in identified communities and enrich prevention efforts across the state through the implementation and sustainability of effective, culturally competent prevention strategies.

Grantees will create a comprehensive, community-based strategic plan that will result in community driven strategies to reduce underage drinking, youth marijuana use, shared risk and protective factors and produce sustainable systems change. “KDADS is excited to welcome this new cohort of grantees to the KPCCI program,” Commissioner Andrew Brown, KDAD Behavioral Health Commission, said. “SUD prevention is important to having a thriving community and these coalitions will be able to plan and implement new strategies for youth and young adults to prevent substance use.”

Utilizing funding and technical assistance, community coalitions will analyze local data that is contributing to substance abuse within their identified geographic area. Resources and technical assistance will be provided to review local assessment profile, logic model, and action plan to address these issues using the five-step SPF process (i.e., assessment, capacity building, planning, implementation, and evaluation). This will also include reviewing plans for sustainability, cultural competence, and evaluation.

The coalitions awarded grants will be supported in their efforts by KDADS and its partners in the Kansas Prevention Collaborative (KPC).

Chanute had its third wettest June with 11.91 inches.  North-central and portions of south-central Kansas ended up below their monthly normal. Salina tied for sixth driest. 

Temperatures were above normal or slightly above normal. Salina had its 10th warmest.

Kansas' own Jake Gill is coming to Salina.

Gill is scheduled to open for Aaron Watson at 8 p.m. July 9 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Gill brings raw energy and charisma to his brand of music. Connecting with both radio listeners and fans that come to see him in concert is important to him – regardless of what era or walk of life they come from.

Growing up in Kansas, Jake Gill has fond memories of spending time with his grandfather on the family farm. Listening to music was a huge part of that upbringing – particularly on 1070 AM, the legendary frequency of radio powerhouse KFDI.

“My grandpa was the one that really exposed me to country music,” Gill recalls. “I remember when I was a sixth grader, and he would let me drive the tractor around the farm. We’d hear all the old-time greats like Hank and Willie.”

But, music had already taken a hold in Gill’s imagination long before that. 

“My dad was a music teacher when I was young. I have photos of me in a bean bag chair while listening to whatever he had playing on the record player. My mom tells the story of my dad directing a band concert, and I was standing on her lap directing right along.”

Later in his formative musical years came a man who would become one of his biggest musical influences – Garth Brooks. Gill says that changed everything. 

“Garth was on the edge. There was a bit of controversy with him, because he was so new and so different. He brought the honky tonk bar scene to a larger audience. That was something I had never seen before. He wasn’t just a singer, he was and is a performer.”

Gill brings that raw energy and charisma to his brand new single, “Tailgate Tradition.” Connecting with both radio listeners and fans that come to see him in concert is important to him – regardless of what era or walk of life they come from.

“You can connect with someone and not even know it. It might be through one of your songs, and they may relate to it in a way you never imagined. I like to make a physical connection, through eye contact or pulling them out of the audience and sharing a dance with them – whether it be an 80 year old or a two year old. I think that’s what really drives me as a performer.”

Though Gill admits there is no place he would rather be today, his road to a musical career began relatively later than most. He focused on studies in college, obtaining his degree, and establishing his own chiropractic office in Hutchinson. Gill had done some performing around the area – namely at local churches – but it wasn’t until his early 30s that he considered giving music his all as a career.

Then, an audition for one of America’s biggest television shows cemented his career goals. He recalls that he was still a little unsure of music as a vocation, but trying out for “The Voice” gave him clear focus on his music. 

“After that, I started to think ‘You know what? I can do this.’”

Hard at work on his fourth album, Gill had a hand in either writing or co-writing every song on each of his albums. He said that as a songwriter, he loves telling a story – especially if it is his. 

“I like to write from experience – something I have lived through myself,” he said.

As a performer, Gill qualifies as a “road warrior,” with a full slate of dates on his schedule. He has also worked the stage with such musical heavyweights as Jake Owen, Easton Corbin, and Chris Cagle. But, there’s one performer and stage that stands head and shoulders above them all.

“I won a songwriting contest, and that got me on the main stage at Country Stampede, and I opened up for Jason Aldean,” he recalled, claiming that night made him more confident than ever in his approach to entertaining a crowd. “By far, that was my greatest experience musically. It was very surreal. I still remember being up there.”

Watson’s career is perhaps summed up best by Forbes, who says he’s "one of country music’s biggest DIY success stories."  

For the past 20 years, Watson has achieved success on his own terms, hand-building a lauded career through songwriting, relentless touring and more than a dozen self released albums. His independent Texas spirit and strong work ethic are emblematic of the western lifestyle; virtues which have taken him from humble honky-tonks of Texas to multiple sold-out tours around the world.
