CLOUD COUNTY — A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 5a.m. Sunday in Cloud County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Honda Civic driven by Danielle R.&nbsp;Inderlied, 30, Concordia, was eastbound on Kansas 28 two miles east of Jamestown.

The car entered the south ditch struck a Chevron sign, mile post and two culvert signs. The car then struck the culvert causing the vehicle to roll.

EMS transported&nbsp;Inderlied to the Cloud County Health Center. She was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman injured in rollover accident

The City of Salina reminds sanitation customers that the transition to new waste carts will begin next week.

Beginning Monday, the new City of Salina waste carts will begin to be delivered and all old city trash and yard waste carts will start to be removed.

The city asks that customers on the first regular collection day on or after Monday set out all old existing trash and yard waste carts for collection and removal.

"If customers receive their new waste cart(s), and their old trash and yard waste carts were not removed, please leave the old carts out and empty until they are. The old carts should be removed over the next day at the latest, if not immediately. If customers find that their new waste cart(s) were not delivered the week of July 5, please setout all existing waste carts the week of July 12 as normal, to be collected and removed," the city noted in a news release.

An information packet containing the new waste collection map and new sanitation collection guidelines will be attached to the new waste carts upon delivery, the city noted. The new waste collection map and new sanitation collection guidelines will take effect July 19.

Radio listeners were challenged to donate during the three-day drive this past week and vote for their favorite participating radio station. 99KG receives bragging rights and a traveling trophy to display for a year.

The blood drive came ever so close to making the goal 234, collecting 230 units of blood, according to the American Red Cross' Teri Novotny. Additionally, the blood drive garnered 24 first-time donors and 103 Type-O donors, Novotny noted.

The Freedom Forum is 30 years old this July 4, but in many ways is just getting started in its mission of “fostering First Amendment freedoms for all.”

The First Amendment will be 230 years old later this year. Like the Freedom Forum, it is as current as today’s ongoing disputes over free speech on the web, roiling protests in the street, bitter debates over religious rights and anti-discrimination laws and difficult new questions about the role of a free press in the 21st century.

For those uncertain what is even in the First Amendment, the Freedom Forum’s “State of the First Amendment” national surveys since 1997 say you have a lot of company. No more than six percent in any year could name all five freedoms in the amendment. Each year somewhere around one-third of us cannot name any.

In case you are asked, the five freedoms are religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.

For three decades, the Freedom Forum has fostered the public’s knowledge and understanding of our First Amendment freedoms:

REACHING MILLIONS IN WASHINGTON, D.C., AND ONLINE

Most publicly, there was the Newseum. One opened in 1997, in Rosslyn, Va., just across the Potomac River from downtown Washington, D.C. It closed as construction was under way for its bigger successor. The new Newseum was open from 2008 to 2019 on Pennsylvania Avenue — “America’s Main Street”— halfway between the U.S. Capitol and The White House.

Both Newseums were about all five freedoms, often through the lens of free speech or a free press.

About 11 million people visited the two Newseums, and the hundreds of thousands who toured the spaces each year were amplified many times over online. In just one year, 12 million students and teachers interacted with the Freedom Forum’s&nbsp;<a href="https://newseumed.org/" target="_blank">online education posts and lesson plans</a>&nbsp;on topics as varied as social justice, media literacy, spotting “fake news” on the web and how we got those five core freedoms — all at no charge.

The Freedom Forum has not only helped Americans value the First Amendment and free press, but also worked to make First Amendment education and journalism better. It has produced doctoral programs in journalism and published nonpartisan guidelines on how to teach about religion in public schools — the latter distributed by the Clinton administration to every public school in the nation.

The Freedom Forum’s First Amendment Center, headquartered at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and now named for its founder, editor and publisher&nbsp;John Seigenthaler, has produced publications, thought leadership, events, concerts, moot court competitions and television programs.

Through grants and guidance, the Freedom Forum helped in the creation of journalism groups representing Black, Native American and Asian American journalists. That commitment to diversity and inclusion in a free press continues today with the Chips Quinn Scholars program (CQS), set up in 1991 to increase the number of people of color in U.S. newsrooms, and the&nbsp;<a href="http://powershiftproject.org/" target="_blank">Power Shift Project</a>, established in 2018 to promote newsroom integrity and inclusion.

From international programs that trained journalists in other nations, libraries throughout the former Soviet Union, satellite offices on both coasts and around the world, education initiatives nationwide, two long-running television series and more, the Freedom Forum has advanced the values of the First Amendment.

The Freedom Forum’s work has focused on helping the public know, understand and defend freedoms set out by the First Amendment’s deceptively simple 45 words. Sometimes that work begins with noting that the opening phase “Congress shall make no law abridging …” now means any part of government, be it presidents or mayors, school superintendents or police officers, football coaches or agency administrators.

Relentlessly nonpartisan and apolitical, the foundation has both benefited from that posture — principally, as a convenor of all sides on a variety of issues — and faced criticism when recognizing that the First Amendment protects opposing and objectionable opinions.

The foundation has been prescient at times in its programs. In 1997, Freedom Forum founder&nbsp;Al Neuharth&nbsp;interviewed&nbsp;Apple Daily&nbsp;founder&nbsp;Jimmy Lai&nbsp;about Lai’s rags-to-riches-to-newspaper publisher life story and the future of freedom in Hong Kong. Earlier this year, the Freedom Forum saluted Lai as one of its Free Expression Award winners — with Lai in a Chinese prison.&nbsp;Apple Daily&nbsp;was since shut down by a Chinese government ruthlessly backtracking on the city’s promised democratic exceptions to China’s authoritarianism.

Presaging the intense debate today over journalism’s ethics, the Freedom Forum in the mid-1990s launched “Free Press-Fair Press,” a multi-year, multi-million-dollar project that ranged from town meetings to newsroom guides and panel programs in the U.S. and abroad, with multiple spin-off initiatives at the Newseums.

What is ahead for the Freedom Forum? The First Amendment faces new challenges, particularly claims the “marketplace of ideas” concept, which has underpinned the amendment for 230 years, is outmoded in a global, web-connected world.

Our nation has been here before. In the early years of the republic, some First Amendment freedoms were enforcibly denied to women and people of color. The introduction of new technologies — from mass circulation newspapers to radio, TV and the internet — has produced fearful reactions over how the “new” would and did change society. The inherent conflict produced by the protection of fringe and extreme beliefs, faiths and opinions is not new, but the First Amendment is up to the task. The Freedom Forum’s next focus is to ensure a growing number of Americans grasp the 21st century relevance and importance of the First Amendment.

For 30 years, the Freedom Forum has been a rare voice heard on behalf of hearing all voices. In a competitive, fractured world that is often not an easy or comfortable position for any organization: Friend and guide for all, partisan of none.

But it is the path chosen by the founders of the Freedom Forum, advanced over three decades, and the renewed focus of today’s leadership — all in service of the 45 words of the First Amendment that frame the foundation and what it means to be an American.

Sometimes that work begins with noting that the opening phase “Congress shall make no law abridging …” now means any part of government, be it presidents or mayors, school superintendents or police officers, football coaches or agency administrators.Relentlessly nonpartisan and apolitical, the foundation has both benefited from that posture — principally, as a convenor of all sides on a variety of issues — and faced criticism when recognizing that the First Amendment protects opposing and objectionable opinions.The foundation has been prescient at times in its programs. FIRST FIVE: Freedom Forum is 30 and just getting started

Today is Sunday, July 4, the 185th day of 2021. There are 180 days left in the year. This is Independence Day. 

On July 4, 1976, America celebrated its bicentennial with daylong festivities; President Gerald R. Ford made stops in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, Independence Hall in Philadelphia and New York, where more than 200 ships paraded up the Hudson River in Operation Sail.

In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by delegates to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. 

In 1802, the United States Military Academy officially opened at West Point, New York. 

In 1826, 50 years to the day after the Declaration of Independence was adopted, former presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died. 

In 1831, the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe, died in New York City at age 73. 

In 1910, in what was billed as "The Fight of the Century," Black world heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson defeated white former champ James J. Jeffries in Reno, Nevada. 

In 1939, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees delivered his famous farewell speech in which he called himself "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." 

In 1946, the Philippines became independent of U.S. sovereignty.

One year ago: In a Fourth of July speech filled with the combativeness of his political rallies, President Donald Trump vowed to "safeguard our values" from enemies within – enemies that he said included "the radical left, the anarchists, the agitators, the looters." Protesters in Baltimore pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus and threw it into the city's Inner Harbor. Florida and Texas reported record daily increases in coronavirus cases, as new signs that the virus was surging in parts of the country cast a pall over Fourth of July celebrations. The world's longest-surviving conjoined twins, Ronnie and Donnie Galyon of Beavercreek, Ohio, died at the age of 68.

Auditions for the following positions will be held on Aug. 23 in the Symphony Rehearsal Hall, 132 S. Fifth Street: flute I, oboe I, oboe II (long-term sub), clarinet II, clarinet III/bass clarinet, section horn, trumpet II and section strings. Wind auditions will begin at 6:30 p.m. with string auditions to follow at 8 p.m.

The 2021-2022 season will be an exciting one as musicians will have the opportunity to play under the batons of our five Music Director finalist candidates. City removes some medians on Broadway, to reuse milled material

“Giving back.” The term is frequently used, but what does it mean in practice? Today we’ll meet a family-owned pharmacy where the people have a longtime commitment to giving back to their&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Heather Johnson is the CEO of S&amp;S Drug, a family-owned pharmacy in downtown Beloit. S&amp;S Drug has served north-central Kansas for more than 100 years. In 1986, Max and Michele Heidrick purchased the drugstore, and it has been in their family ever since. Their daughter Heather grew up in the business.&nbsp;

Heather went to Kansas State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and later got a master’s in special ed. She married Jim Johnson, who had grown up in neighboring Jewell County and earned a degree in agribusiness. After graduation, they moved to Norton, where Heather taught and Jim worked in a bank until he went to law school at the University of Kansas. In 2005, they moved back to Beloit, where Jim joined the law practice of attorney Curt Frasier. In 2007, Heather took a position as bookkeeper at her family’s business, S&amp;S Drug. Heather and Jim also had three children.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Over the years, my dad and I have kind of switched roles,” Heather said. “Now I’m doing the management, and he’s enjoyed becoming a professional grandpa,” she said with a smile.&nbsp;

S&amp;S Drug has two businesses, a full-service pharmacy and a home-health supply store.&nbsp;&nbsp;The businesses are located across the street from each other in downtown Beloit.&nbsp;

As a businessperson, community member, and mother of three, Heather felt strongly about enhancing the quality of life in the community. “I focused on things I enjoyed as a young child,” Heather said. “I wanted those same opportunities for my kids and their friends.”&nbsp;

This was based on values that Heather had learned from her parents, who had also been deeply involved in the community. “That’s how we were raised,” she said. “My mom and dad were doers.”&nbsp;

As a result, S&amp;S Drug has been a longtime sponsor of community and youth activities in Beloit. S&amp;S Drug and the Heidrick and Johnson families are involved in supporting lots of different activities for virtually every major holiday.&nbsp;

They helped organize and sponsor the Easter egg hunt, for example, where as many as 600 children participate, and everyone gets a prize. At Christmastime, they help sponsor the annual visit by Santa Claus to downtown Beloit, complete with crafts and cookies. The list goes on and on.&nbsp;

“When we first moved back (to Beloit), there were Fourth of July fireworks at Waconda Lake,” Heather said. When funding ran low and the organizers got tired, the fireworks were discontinued. “North-central Kansas went a year without fireworks, and we felt that had to change,” Heather said. Her family solicited funds, and more than $10,000 was raised to bring back the annual fireworks display. As of 2021, the local chamber now operates the fireworks show.&nbsp;

“When my kids were little, I took them to the Beloit city pool,” Heather said. “It had been built in the 1940s and was leaking and costing the city a lot of money.” She saw the need, set up a committee, researched the topic and led a drive to fund a new aquatic center. Voters approved a sales tax increase for the project. Beloit became one of the first&nbsp;rural&nbsp;Kansas communities to construct a large water park. &nbsp;

“It’s been a great draw,” Heather said. “There was a village here that helped raise me and my siblings. Someone needs to carry on those traditions.”&nbsp;

That type of commitment to community is vital in&nbsp;rural&nbsp;places such as Beloit, population 3,835 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

“Giving back.” It’s more than a concept for Heather Johnson of S&amp;S Drug, who is making a difference by enhancing the quality of life in her community. She not only moved back, she is giving back.&nbsp;

Today we’ll meet a family-owned pharmacy where the people have a longtime commitment to giving back to their&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Heather Johnson is the CEO of S&amp;S Drug, a family-owned pharmacy in downtown Beloit. S&amp;S Drug has served north-central Kansas for more than 100 years. In 1986, Max and Michele Heidrick purchased the drugstore, and it has been in their family ever since. Their daughter Heather grew up in the business.&nbsp;Heather went to Kansas State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and later got a master’s in special ed. She married Jim Johnson, who had grown up in neighboring Jewell County and earned a degree in agribusiness. After graduation, they moved to Norton, where Heather taught and Jim worked in a bank until he went to law school at the University of Kansas. In 2005, they moved back to Beloit, where Jim joined the law practice of attorney Curt Frasier. In 2007, Heather took a position as bookkeeper at her family’s business, S&amp;S Drug. Heather and Jim also had three children.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;“Over the years, my dad and I have kind of switched roles,” Heather said. “Now I’m doing the management, and he’s enjoyed becoming a professional grandpa,” she said with a smile.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>S&amp;S Drug has two businesses, a full-service pharmacy and a home-health supply store.&nbsp;&nbsp;The businesses are located across the street from each other in downtown Beloit.&nbsp;As a businessperson, community member, and mother of three, Heather felt strongly about enhancing the quality of life in the community. “I focused on things I enjoyed as a young child,” Heather said. “I wanted those same opportunities for my kids and their friends.”&nbsp;This was based on values that Heather had learned from her parents, who had also been deeply involved in the community. “That’s how we were raised,” she said. “My mom and dad were doers.”&nbsp;As a result, S&amp;S Drug has been a longtime sponsor of community and youth activities in Beloit. S&amp;S Drug and the Heidrick and Johnson families are involved in supporting lots of different activities for virtually every major holiday.&nbsp;They helped organize and sponsor the Easter egg hunt, for example, where as many as 600 children participate, and everyone gets a prize. At Christmastime, they help sponsor the annual visit by Santa Claus to downtown Beloit, complete with crafts and cookies. The list goes on and on.&nbsp;“When we first moved back (to Beloit), there were Fourth of July fireworks at Waconda Lake,” Heather said. When funding ran low and the organizers got tired, the fireworks were discontinued. “North-central Kansas went a year without fireworks, and we felt that had to change,” Heather said. Her family solicited funds, and more than $10,000 was raised to bring back the annual fireworks display. As of 2021, the local chamber now operates the fireworks show.&nbsp;“When my kids were little, I took them to the Beloit city pool,” Heather said. “It had been built in the 1940s and was leaking and costing the city a lot of money.” She saw the need, set up a committee, researched the topic and led a drive to fund a new aquatic center. Voters approved a sales tax increase for the project. Beloit became one of the first&nbsp;rural&nbsp;Kansas communities to construct a large water park. &nbsp;“It’s been a great draw,” Heather said. “There was a village here that helped raise me and my siblings. Someone needs to carry on those traditions.”&nbsp;That type of commitment to community is vital in&nbsp;rural&nbsp;places such as Beloit, population 3,835 people. NOW THAT'S RURAL: Heather Johnson, S&S Drug – Part 1

Today is Saturday, July 3, the 184th day of 2021. There are 181 days left in the year. 

On July 3, 1775, Gen. George Washington took command of the Continental Army at Cambridge, Massachusetts. 

In 1863, the three-day Civil War Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania ended in a major victory for the North as Confederate troops failed to breach Union positions during an assault known as Pickett's Charge. 

In 1913, during a 50th anniversary reunion at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Civil War veterans re-enacted Pickett's Charge, which ended with embraces and handshakes between the former enemies.

PRATT – Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) game wardens will be on heightened alert for those boating under the influence during Operation Dry Water (ODW), through July 4th.&nbsp;

ODW&nbsp;is part of a national effort to reduce accidents and fatalities related to boating under the influence (BUI). While ODW is a year-round campaign, an increase in awareness and enforcement efforts take place around July 4th, a holiday known for the potentially deadly combination of drinking and boating.

During ODW, KDWP game wardens will be looking for boaters whose blood alcohol content exceeds the state limit of 0.08. The weekend will include increased patrols, breathalyzer tests, life jacket checks and boater education. Impaired boaters can expect to be arrested or face other serious penalties. In Kansas, the consequences for BUI include fines, jail and loss of boating privileges.

“With large crowds of people celebrating the holiday by having a great time on the water boating, we want to remind everyone to be alert, follow the navigation rules and avoid the consumption of alcohol while operating vessels,” said KDWP boating law administrator Maj. Dan Hesket. “Impairment while on the water due to natural elements can happen at a much faster rate and cause a boat operator to make poor judgement in their operating maneuvers. It’s the mission of KDWP to keep our waters safe for all boaters to enjoy.”

Alcohol use continues to be the leading contributing factor in recreational boating accidents across the nation. Since the start of the ODW campaign in 2009, law enforcement officers across the nation have removed more than 4,700 impaired operators from our nation’s waterways, preventing dangerous and potentially catastrophic consequences.

ODW is a joint program of KDWP, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators to help spread awareness and prevent tragedies related to BUI.  Boat safely this holiday weekend; don't get a BUI

TOPEKA – This Fourth of July weekend, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Tourism (KDWP) urges individuals who may be on Kansas lakes to be aware of potential blue-green algae and to understand that harmful algal blooms are unpredictable and may develop rapidly.&nbsp;

If you observe a scum, a paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments, or the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. &nbsp;These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

KDHE, in conjunction with KDWP, has also issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.
