LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Department of Theatre &amp; Dance recognized 65 students as recipients of its year-end awards and scholarships, totaling more than $175,000 in financial support.

"We’ve always considered ourselves fortunate to have the kind of donor support that allows us to recognize so many outstanding students,” said Henry Bial, professor and department chair. “This year, with all that we’ve been through, we appreciate that generosity even more. These scholarships and awards are real difference-makers in terms of students’ ability to graduate and pursue their dreams. The department has more than three dozen named scholarships and awards, which preserve our donors’ legacies."

The Jon T. Eicholtz and Barbara Eden Acting Scholarship – named in part after the actress best known for starring in television’s “I Dream of Jeannie” – is a full-ride, renewable scholarship awarded to Jayhawks pursuing the craft. Based on the strength of her audition and high school academic achievements, Isabella Lind, from Solvang, California, was selected as the recipient.

The Kilty Kane Award, the highest award that can be given in recognition of outstanding contributions made to the University Theatre by a graduating student, was presented to Gabrielle Smith, of Lansing, who completed her bachelor's degree in theatre performance. The Kuhlke Humanitarian Award was presented to Tehreem Chaudhry, of Lawrence, who completed her bachelor's degree in theatre performance. Both of these awards are named for actors (Jerome Kilty and Professor Emeritus William Kuhlke) credited with memorable performances as guest artists in Murphy Hall.

The Elizabeth Sherbon Award, the highest award that can be given in recognition of a dance student, was presented to two students this year: Madison Meade, of Auburn, Nebraska, BFA in dance, who recently completed her junior year, and Cicely Stevenson, of Nauvoo, Illinois, BFA in dance and bachelor's degree in theatre performance, who recently completed her junior year.

Saline County wants to know what you think about the use of Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds awarded to the county. 

On March 11, the American Rescue Plan Act was signed into law. This act allocates $350 billion nationwide to Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds. Counties will share $65.1 billion of this amount via direct allocations from the U.S. Treasury.

On May 10, Saline County was notified of an award in the amount of $10,532,376. Per terms of the act, funds must be obligated by Dec. 31, 2024, and fully expended no later than Dec. 31, 2026.

Saline County has set up surveys for both businesses/nonprofits and individual residents.

Saline County seeks input about American Rescue Plan funding

ABILENE - The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a man whose body was found this morning near the Smoky Hill River bridge on Kansas Highway 15.

According to a release from Dickinson County Sheriff Jerry Davis, sheriff's personnel, as well as those from Dickinson County Emergency Medical Services, and the Abilene Fire Department were dispatched to the Smoky Hill River bridge just south of Abilene at approximately 6:50 a.m. Tuesday. There they discovered a deceased male subject with an apparent gunshot wound.

The sheriff's office has not yet released the name of the man, pending notification of family.

The sheriff noted that the investigation is ongoing and no further information would be released at this time.

FORMOSO - A small earthquake rattled part of Jewell County this morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.3 magnitude quake struck just southwest of Formoso at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday. The quake was centered east of 270th Road between N Road and O Road.

A Solomon teen was arrested early this morning after the car he and three passengers were in briefly went airborne after crossing E. Crawford Street.

An officer observed a 2002 Toyota Avalon that was northbound on S. Ohio Street make an improper turn to go eastbound on E. Crawford Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The officer followed the Avalon, and when it turned south onto Holly Lane, attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

The car continued to the Hospice of Salina parking lot, where it turned around, accelerated, and headed back north on Holly Lane, Forrester said. The car failed to stop at the stop sign at E. Crawford Street, crossed the street, hit the curb, and was briefly airborne before coming to a stop in a disabled condition.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy from Solomon, and three passengers, another 16-year-old boy from Solomon, a 14-year-old girl from Salina, and an 18-year-old woman from Salina, were not injured, Forrester said.

The driver was arrested on requested charges that included flee and elude, improper turn, stop sign violation, and improper driving on landed roadways, Forrester said. The boy was released to his parents' custody, Forrester added.

No one hurt when car goes airborne; Solomon teen arrested

A local man was taken into custody early Monday evening after a shot was reportedly fired in the parking lot of a south Salina store.

Officers were dispatched to Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth Street, at approximately 6:15 p.m. Monday for the report of a disturbance, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

Initially, two men got into an altercation inside the store. The dispute then moved to the parking lot, where one of the men, identified as Raymond Lawrence, 34, of Salina, allegedly fired a handgun into the air, at which point the other man, described only as a Black male, fled the scene, Forrester said.

Lawrence was found walking in the 2800 block of S. Ninth Street and was taken into custody, Forrester said. Lawrence had a .22 revolver in a holster on his belt.

Lawrence told police that the other man had cut in front of him in line at Walmart. Lawrence said that once the altercation moved to the parking lot, the other man punched him in the face. Lawrence had injuries to his face consistent with being punched, Forrester said. Lawrence told police that he fired the shot into the air in an attempt to summon help, Forrester added.

The other man has been identified and the police are looking for him, Forrester said.

The registered owner of the Grand Am, Crystal McKellips, 39, of Belleville, was at work at a local nursing home and told police that she had parked the car at a friend's house in the 200 block of S. College Avenue at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. She said she left the keys to the car on the porch, according to Forrester.

The pickup suffered front end damage. The Grand Am also suffered front end damage and had to be towed, Forrester said.

The pickup struck an eastbound Pontiac G6 driven by Staci Starr, 41, of Salina, he said. The wreck occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. Sunday.

Starr was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with a broken leg, Forrester said.

The pickup had right front damage and the G6 had left front damage. Both were towed from the scene.

Finan was cited for failure to yield and no proof of insurance, Forrester said.

ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) recently wore blue jeans at work for another Jeans Day fundraiser. 

Employees who made a donation of at least $5 were allowed to wear blue jeans on the last Friday of June. The day was organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee. 

A total donation of $200 was presented to the Abilene Baseball Club. The money raised will help with operating expenses for the club for items such as scholarships (so kids can play), equipment, uniforms, umpires, and more.

ABILENE - The Lebold Mansion in Abilene has a new owner, a modern Renaissance man of sorts who has a number of ideas to bring the historic mansion and the public together once again.

"The lights are on again at the old Lebold Mansion. Screams will fill the night at Halloween and jingle bells will ring at Christmastime. Like the legendary Phoenix, the Lebold Mansion will rise once more," new owner Joseph Tatner noted in a news release.

Tatner became the owner of the nearly 150-year-old property on June 28.

The mansion’s long list of owners includes more than its share of colorful characters, and Tatner acknowledges that he is no exception. Tatner noted, however, that he may well be the most qualified person to take full advantage of this unique property, which bears a striking resemblance to the Addams Family home. Tatner explained that he has an affinity for the irrepressible Gomez Addams character, who is known as much for his love of life and charitable nature as for his offbeat sense of style. Although he has often been called “eccentric,” Tatner noted that he just likes to have fun. He also like to make people smile, and has earned wide recognition for doing so.

Tatner is a professional actor, producer, director, singer, dancer, marketeer, and writer. A former computer consultant, he currently writes business proposals from home to win government contracts for a cutting-edge technical company near Washington, D.C. He has also earned more than twenty certificates of appreciation or commendation from U.S. congressmen and senators, state governors, and city officials for producing events and ceremonies such as the Hansen Dam Fourth of July Spectacular (the largest fireworks display event in Los Angeles County), North Hollywood Theater and Arts Festival, and a fundraiser for St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. The last organization has special place in Tatner’s heart, since the hospital saved his life from a childhood illness.

As a published author, Tatner has written a wide range of books, from Autism: A New Hope (with Dr. Cheri L. Florance) and the Opus Americana (an epic tome on American history and symbology) to his award-winning comedy/action/romance trilogy, Floyd &amp; Mikki: Zombie Hunters. As an actor, he has played roles on The Partridge Family, The Brady Bunch, Fame, commercials, and several movies. He’s been seen around the world as Nostradamus in a special produced by The History Channel. Tatner has produced, directed and hosted numerous events in New York cabarets, a Cultural Concert Summer Series in Los Angeles, and performed countless times in hospitals and rest homes simply to cheer people up.

If all that wasn’t enough, Tatner studied to be a priest in Rome and was an Air Force officer, he indicated in the news release.

According to Tatner, he plans to open the mansion for tours, generally remaining faithful to the historic nature of the property, but with fully modern technology. The site will have links to other local attractions throughout the area, such as the Seeley Mansion, Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad, Great Plains Theater, and Eisenhower Museum. Tatner said he plans to promote the town of Abilene itself, as well as the people and businesses who help to support the mansion.

“I’ve got a lot of work to do,” Tatner admitted, “and it will all take time, but it all can be done. The mansion needs a lot of work, as well, so I’m starting a Go Fund Me page and will be asking donations for the tours and various events, but I won’t turn anyone away simply because they have no money. I’m not rich, and I was lucky to get this property for an amazing price, but I have the experience and determination to succeed in bringing the Lebold back to life.”

Indeed, there is a lot of work to do. The last owner sold everything in the mansion that wasn’t bolted down (and a lot that was), Tatner noted in the news release. The beautiful curtains and fine Victorian furniture are all gone. The wood needs treatment and restoration, and various repairs pose additional challenges, but the home is structurally sound.

No mansion is complete without a secret door, so Tatner is having one made. Details so far remain, well, secret, but it is no secret that Tatner plans to open his hospitality to the community. 

Planned events include Saturday Teas, Sunday Sundaes, Addams Family themed dinners, Get-A-Clue murder mystery nights (a game created by Joseph himself specifically for the mansion), and, of course, guided tours, he noted. One downstairs room is being converted into a small theater and movie room with popcorn and hot dogs for events. Any actors or craftsmen who have a talent to offer are encouraged to contact Tatner directly.

“This town and this home have an amazing history. Not to mention more than a few ghost stories. I thank God I was able to get this place, and I’m going to have a lot of fun in it. I hope everyone else does, too,” Tatner said.

Lebold had great success as an Abilene banker and land agent. He later became Mayor of Abilene, Treasurer for Dickinson County, and a member of the state legislature. The Lebold Mansion was built in 1880 for a cost of $18,000. At one time, it was said to be “the finest dwelling house west of Topeka.” After business failure, Lebold moved away from Abilene and the mansion saw a number of different owners and uses. In the late 1920s, the mansion became known as the Girls Club. The Girls Club was owned by C.L. Brown, and was a residence that offered female employees of the United Companies a place to live. The Lebold Mansion also saw life as an apartment building and a historic tour home.

New owner plans to bring Abilene's Lebold Mansion back to life

This position will have primary responsibility for assisting Operations Technicians with the preparation and execution of startup, changeovers, and line shut down, executing the master sanitation functions, coordination of production materials, safety compliance, data collection, maintaining 5S Visual Workplace and overall production support. The Operations Assistant will also be responsible to work within a structure that requires considerable interaction with others in the same production unit as well as other production units and support functions.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

●Understands and is responsible for full compliance and following of all Quality, GMP's, AIB and Micro (C&amp;S Guidelines), EOHS, and safety standards and guidelines.

●Assist with startup, changeovers, and line shut down of automated and manual equipment throughout the production facility.

●Performs Housekeeping activities as per master sanitation schedule, and conducts/participates in area housekeeping assessments as required to meet all GMP's, FDA and AIB requirements.

●Responsible to support line operations during lunches, breaks and coverage for open positions.

●Responsible for finished goods preparation and inspection, including top cap placement, inspection check list, legible date codes, and quality of bag seals.

●Production line waste removal and disposal according to Standard Operating Procedures.

●Responsible for cleaning and sanitation of equipment throughout the production areas during operation. Trained in LOTO, chemical handling, PPE, etc.

●Understand and comply with Hill's policies, safety standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Food Safety. Identify and report Food safety issues to management.

●Responsible for managing Dum back/Regrind/Reblend product movement.

●Supports packaging lines with staging of resources needed based on the production schedule including hand stacking of all bag sizes.

●Attends the Shift Transition Meeting to understand current shift production schedule.

●Contribution of additional work hours when needed to meet business demands.

●High school diploma or equivalent.. Must be able to work any shift schedule, including nights and weekends.

●Ability to bend, climb, and work in confined spaces, and work in hazardous condition spaces for up to twelve hours per day.

●Ability to push totes containing product up to 750 lbs.

●Ability to work in extreme weather conditions with temperature ranges from cold to hot and humid.

●Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, repeatedly.

●Use a stand-up or sit-down forklift, intermittently for up to twelve hours per day.

●Technical college/vocational school certificate or Associates degree in Manufacturing-related area preferred.

●Food safety experience including cleaning and sanitation of equipment.
