Tuesday a front will approach bring temperatures down some and increasing the risk for severe weather.

Legendary NBC anchor&nbsp;Tom Brokaw&nbsp;had just returned to work on Sept. 11, 2001, after taking the summer off. A friend asked how it was to be back in the saddle.

“I’m doing fine but there’s no news,” Brokaw, now 81, complained. “It’s hard to get cranked back up.”

Little did anyone know everyone’s world was about to be changed forever.

At 8:46 a.m. on that splendid, crisp September morning, a plane hijacked by terrorists sliced into the World Trade Center’s North Tower. Seventeen minutes later, another hijacked plane smashed into the South Tower. By 10:28 a.m., both towers had collapsed, killing nearly 3,000 people in the space of 102 minutes.

By noon, a third hijacked plane plowed into the Pentagon (reported by AP at 9:43 a.m.) and a fourth, on which passengers tried to stop the hijackers, crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pa. (11:19 a.m.). No one on the four hijacked planes survived.

If ever there was a day where journalists proved the incalculable benefits of the First Amendment, and why they are so desperately needed to inform and educate the public, Sept. 11 was that day.

While many fled lower Manhattan and the Pentagon for their lives, every sort of journalist did what they have always done best: They ran toward danger. They kept their cameras trained on the horror. They commandeered taxis, borrowed bikes and jumped into strangers’ cars, ordering them to drive toward the scene. Their reports helped provide a sense of what was happening even when no one knew exactly what was happening.

More than 1,800 fashion writers from around the world in New York for the spring 2002 collection were pressed into service. Associated Press (AP) photographer&nbsp;Richard Drew&nbsp;left the show and headed to the scene, shooting some of the most arresting photos of that day. Many photographers like Drew were still using rolls of film.

“We were watching a guy clinging to the side of the building on the North Tower while people were falling from the building,” Drew told the&nbsp;<a href="https://newseumed.org/tools/lesson-plan/running-toward-danger-video-lesson" target="_blank">Newseum in 2002</a>. “You know what you have to do. You make pictures. There’s one image I shot of a man falling head first from the building. I felt like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/richard-drew-on-photographing-the-falling-man-on-911/" target="_blank">the photo</a>&nbsp;captured part of his life.”

Twenty years ago, Drew and hundreds of other journalists didn’t have the technology they have today. If reporters had cell phones then, they were primitive — and didn’t work anyway with cell towers down. The planes destroyed cell towers atop the Twin Towers, knocking many TV stations temporarily off the air until they hooked up to backup satellite and cable lines. Phone lines jammed. You needed rolls of quarters for a pay phone, if you could find one. Each was 10 to 12 deep in people waiting to make calls.

Then, there was no social media to muddy up the then much-needed information expressway. Today, everyone’s a publisher. Everyone is hyperconnected for nearly every aspect of their lives. Nearly 80 percent of U.S. adults have broadband at home. In March 2001, according to the Pew Research Center, just 6 percent did.

On Sept. 11, AP writer&nbsp;Sara Kugler&nbsp;finally found a pay phone at 9:39 a.m. “Mostly I gave color,” she said. “As I got closer to Vesey Street, I saw men’s shoes. Then I realized that people had been blown out of their shoes”

About the same time, in Arlington, Va., Reuters news assistant&nbsp;Molly Riley&nbsp;ran home from a doctor’s visit to get her bike, grabbed her Nikon digital Coolpix camera and pedaled to the Pentagon. She called the news desk to ask what was happening. Senior photographer&nbsp;Herman Beals&nbsp;replied: “Everything short of World War III.”

At 10:28 a.m., a stunned&nbsp;Aaron Brown, then CNN’s anchor, watched in horror — as did millions — as the second tower collapsed into a massive pile of dust, rubble, clothing and body parts. “Good Lord, there are no words.”

It was a day like no other. For that one day – only—the heads of CBS, ABC, CNN and NBC declared whatever footage one had, the others could use. No need for written agreements. The agreement ended the next day.

For journalists, it was personal too. It was happening to them. Some were physically injured, emotionally scared, traumatized. They did their jobs while worrying about their own families, their own safety, squashing their fears to heroically document a day anyone alive then has seared into their brains.

No other news event since has gripped the nation in real time like Sept. 11. TV stations stayed live all day, nearly 80 million people glued to cable or broadcast. Or they listened to the radio or tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to get information online. Newspapers put out extra editions.

Sure, now there’s live hurricane coverage, and millions tuned in to watch former President Trump’s impeachment hearings.

But not like on Sept. 11. At about 12:36 p.m. that day, CNN’s Brown said words he’d never imagined saying. “The United States of America is under attack … Those are really hard words to say.”

And yet, anchors around the world uttered those same words on Jan. 6, 2021, the day thousands stormed the U.S. Capitol when it was in session, breaking through police barriers, climbing through windows, pummeling the police — even trying to assault then-Vice President&nbsp;Mike Pence&nbsp;— in a futile effort to prevent certification of the 2020 presidential election.

This time, the attackers were Americans. But on that day too, the nation watched in horror. And on that day too, journalists ran toward danger.

FIRST FIVE: On 9/11, journalists ran toward danger

A local dentist has been selected to honor a first responder with a new smile.

Dr. Kate Gross from New Horizons Dental Care in Salina was selected to represent Kansas in Smiles for America. Across the country, one dentist in each state has donated his/her talents to transform the smile of a first responder or other hero in honor of the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

“Being a part of the inaugural Smiles for America program makes me feel incredibly honored, and the best part is being able to nationally recognize a true American hero from someone in my community!” Gross said.

Gross selected Brandon Cochran, the Lincoln County Ambulance Service director, as the Kansas Smiles for America hero. Cochran has been a public servant for 27 years, serving as an EMT, firefighter, sheriff’s deputy, corrections officer, and ambulance service worker in both Lincoln and Ottawa counties. His leadership and service within the community, led him to recently be chosen as the ambulance director in Lincoln County.

When he was informed that he had been selected, Cochran noted, with great humility, that other people might be more deserving to be the hero from Kansas.

“It’s pretty amazing,” Cochran said, “it’s quite an honor being selected, given there’s only 50 people being chosen.”

According to a news release from New Horizons Dental Care, dental work on all the heroes was expected to be completed so they would have their new smiles by the 20th anniversary of 9/11 on Saturday.

“I am honored to be a part of providing our American heroes across the country the freedom to smile with confidence. Smiles for America is a unique and fitting way of doing good for Brandon and so many others. It is one small way that I can say thank you for all they do for us,” Gross said.

Ten years ago: The nation and the world marked the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Bahrain agreed to normalize relations with Israel, becoming the latest Arab nation to do so as part of a broader diplomatic push by the Trump administration to ease the Jewish state's relative isolation in the Middle East. Smoke pollution from wildfires raging in California and across the Pacific Northwest worsened in San Francisco, Seattle and Portland, Oregon, giving those cities and others in the region some of the world's worst air quality. TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Minneapolis public water supply system. 

The advisory was issued because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Minneapolis indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.

Twenty years ago, while many were running away from the horror of the 9/11 attacks, first responders ran toward the danger. They knew the gravity of the situation and went anyway. They did so, according to McPherson Fire Chief T.J. Wyssmann, out of a great love for their community, the people they served, and each other.

"Those men and women stepped up and did what needed to be done," Wyssmann said. "First responders don't seek fame. They don't seek power. They're not in it for recognition. They are goodhearted human beings who sacrifice their time, minds, and bodies to help others."

It is this spirit that will be honored on Saturday during the McPherson Fire Department's public 9/11 Ceremony.

The ceremony will begin at 8:46 a.m. Saturday at the bandshell in Lakeside Park with an honor guard lowering of the flag to half-staff and a moment of silent reflection according to the itinerary posted on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/McphersonFireDepartment">McPherson Fire Department</a> Facebook page. Wyssmann said the department chose to follow the 9/11 timeline as it would have been in Eastern Time in order to encourage more people to attend the event.

This first moment of silence will mark the time that American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into floors 93-99 of 1 World Trade Center, the North Tower.

A second moment of silence will be at 9:03 a.m., the time that United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into floors 77-85 of 2 World Trade Center, the South Tower.

The third moment of silence will be at 9:37 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon.

A final moment of silence is scheduled for just after 10 a.m. when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pa. It was the only of the four jets to not reach its target, thanks in part to passengers and crew who stormed the cockpit. 

At 9:59 a.m. and 10:28 a.m., when the South Tower and North Tower, respectively, collapsed killing thousands, the McPherson Fire Department will maintain a time-honored tradition of ringing out 5/5/5, also known as tolling the bell, symbolizing that a firefighter has died.

Wyssmann explained that in the days long before cellphones, fire alarms communicated with fire stations via a telegraph. Additionally, when a firefighter died in the line of duty, the telegraph company would send out a series of five dashes, followed by a pause, five more dashes and another pause, followed by the final five dashes to let others knows that a fireman had died. Today, those dashes are rung.

At 1 p.m., United States Senator Jerry Moran is scheduled to speak to commemorate the the 20th anniversary of 9/11, according to the McPherson Fire Department ceremony itinerary. Wyssmann and Chaplain Terry Turner also are scheduled to speak during the event, and those attending will be given the chance to reflect on 9/11.

While the McPherson Fire Department conducts a 9/11 ceremony each year, this year's event is more extensive and, for the first time, includes a car show to benefit the Firemen's Benefit Association. Wyssmann said the car show has grown to be much larger than expected, with 80 to 90 participants. The show also will provide those in attendance with an opportunity to see the department's 1928 American LaFrance fire truck that is being restored.

The McPherson event is but one of several in the area. 

The Salina Fire Department will have a brief ceremony at Station 1, 222 W. Elm Street, beginning at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, when the flag is lowered to half-staff, Battalion Chief John Goertzen said. The event is open to the public.

The ceremony will include remarks by Chief Kevin Royse and an invocation by one of the department's chaplains, Goertzen said. Additionally, fire personnel at all four Salina stations will stand at attention outside the stations. Like their counterparts in McPherson, Salina firefighters will toll the bell on the department's antique fire truck in memory of those firefighters who died during the 9/11 attacks.

Ellsworth Fire and Rescue has scheduled a 9/11 commemoration event for 4 p.m. Saturday in front of the fire station at Court and Main. Included will be a memorial reveal and dedication honoring the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Additionally, the ceremony will include the singing of the National Anthem, the playing of bagpipes, and an opportunity to touch a piece of the World Trade Center, according to information posted on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Ellsworth-Volunteer-Fire-Dept-730036290367382">Ellsworth Volunteer Fire Dept</a> Facebook page. The department also will ring an end of service in memory of those firefighters who lost their lives while trying to help others during 9/11.

A&nbsp;Warning status&nbsp;indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure.&nbsp; Contact with the waterbody should be avoided.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A&nbsp;Watch status&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Signage will be posted at all public access locations.

●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced mutiple locations where it plans chip seal work.

On Monday, the department&nbsp;will begin a chip seal operation on&nbsp;various roadways located in the county (see list below).

Flaggers and a pilot car will direct one lane of traffic through construction. Drivers should be prepared for a delay of up to 15 minutes and plan extra time in their travel schedules.

Weather permitting, this construction is anticipated to be completed by Oct. 1. After construction, traffic is requested to travel at 35 mph on the chip sealed roads until the “Loose Gravel” signs are removed from the road.&nbsp;

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced the reopening of two roads that had been closed for culvert replacements.

W. Humbargar Road between Gerrard Road and Thompson Road has been reopened.

Additionally, W. Crawford Street from S. Muir Road to S. Lightville Road will be opened today, the department noted in a news release.

A Salina man was cited after a two-vehicle accident Thursday morning in central Salina.

Kenneth Bridges, 82, of Salina, was southbound on S. Fourth Street in a 2017 Honda HR-V when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the E. Republic Avenue intersection and struck an eastbound 2000 Honda Accord driven by a 16-year-old boy from Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. The accident occurred at approximately 7:50 a.m. Thursday.

Bridges complained of chest pain and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center.

Both vehicles had front-end damage and were towed from the scene.

Forrested said Bridges was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign.

A Salina man was arrested on child endangerment and multiple drug charges after an incident in central Salina Thursday afternoon.

Officers were dispatched to a reported accident involving a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup and a tree in the 500 block of S. Fifth Street at approximately 2:40 p.m. Thursday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. When they arrived at the scene, the officers were told that the driver had removed a baby carrier from the pickup and fled the scene on foot. Additionally, officer found a handgun on the ground outside the driver’s door of the pickup.

Witnesses told police that the driver fled eastbound. Officers spotted him carrying the baby carrier and running east across S. Fourth Street into the 300 block of Center Street. The subject then ran into the backyard of 310 Center Street and entered a detatched garage, having placed an eight-week-old baby still in the carrier in the backyard of the residence, Forrester said. The baby was not injured, he added.

The subject, identified as Timothy Garcia, 36, of Salina, was arrested as he attempted to walk away from an officer. Officers allegedly found approximately 768 grams of marijuana and 7 grams of cocaine in Garcia's possession. Additionally, an open container of Crown Royal was allegedly found in the pickup.

Forrester said Garcia was arrested on the following requested charges.

●Possession with intent to distribute certain stimulant

●Possession with intent to distribute marijuana

●Possession of a firearm under the influence

●Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
