ELLSWORTH COUNTY—Four people were injured in an accidet just before 2:30p.m. Thursday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Chevy Equinox driven by Judy K. Fuller, 71, Ellsworth, was westbound on Kansas 140 just west of County Road 23.

The Chevy crossed the center line and struck a 2009 Ford Escape driven by Lyle L. Dunning, 78, Plainville.

EMS transported Fuller, Dunning, a passenger in the Chevy Alvin R Fuller, 82, Ellsworth, and a passenger in the Ford Nancy A. Dunning, 78, Plainville, to Salina Regional Health Center.

All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

4 hospitalized in Salina after 2-vehicle crash

HERINGTON, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says the police chief and an assistant chief in Herington have been accused of trespassing. 

The KBI announced Wednesday that Chief John Matula and assistant Chief Curtis Tyra have been issued summons to appear in Dickinson County District Court. Both men are charged with criminal trespass. Matula is also charged with criminal damage to property. 

The charges are misdemeanors. The KBI says the two men are accused of forcing their way into a home on May 18 without a search warrant. James Brun, an attorney from Overland Park, has been appointed special prosecutor in the case. Matula announced his resignation on Thursday.

County closes part of W. Humbargar Road for culvert work

The Salina Symphony will begin its in-performance vetting of music director and conductor candidates as it opens its season Oct. 3.

After an absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the symphony will return to the Stiefel Theatre stage at 4 p.m. Oct. 3.

Additionally, the symphony will perform Victor Herbert’s rousing American Fantasia and Bruch’s soul-stirring Scottish Fantasy. Featured guest artist Siwoo Kim, violinist, is scheduled to perform Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy.

A New York City-based musician, Kim last performed with the Salina Symphony in 2012 as the winner of the King Award for Young Artists Competition, according to information from the symphony. He is considered an “incisive” and “compelling” (Zachary Woolfe, The New York Times) violinist who plays with “stylistic sensitivity and generous tonal nuance” (John von Rhein, Chicago Tribune). Kim regularly performs as a soloist and chamber musician.

Highly regarded for his exhilarating score interpretations, advocacy for music accessibility, innate passion and entrepreneurial vigor, Hughes is an American orchestral and operatic conductor of Irish and Guatemalan descent, the symphony noted. He currently serves as music director and conductor of the Boulder Symphony and Arapahoe Philharmonic, both located in the Denver Metro area. A Salina man was cited for inattentive driving after a two-vehicle accident on S. Ohio Street late Wednesday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 2015 Honda Fit driven by Stacy Chambers, 42, of Salina, was northbound in the 2000 block of S. Ohio Street and stopped at the red light at the Albert Avenue intersection when it was rear-ended by a 2013 Nissan Versa driven by K.C. Covington, 33, Salina. The accident occurred Wednesday at approximately 5:25 p.m.

Covington told police that he dropped something on the floor and when he looked up, it was too late to avoid the collision, Forrester said.

Chambers complained of back pain and transported herself to the Salina Regional Health Center emergency room, according to Forrester.

The Versa sustained front-end damage and the Fit sustained rear-end damage.

Covington was cited for inattentive driving.

Part of W. Crawford Street has been closed for culvert work.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department this morning announced that it had closed to through traffic W. Crawford Street from S. Muir Road to S. Lightville Road for replacement of cross-road drainage culverts.

Weather permitting, the roadway should be opened by the end of the day Friday, the department noted.

Michael Pritchard, assistant professor in the integrated studies department at Kansas State University Salina, is the 2021 recipient of the Rex McArthur Family Faculty Fellow Award. The annual honor recognizes a K-State Salina professor who exudes honorable service in teaching and research, and commitment to the college, university and community. Since joining K-State Salina in 2019, Pritchard has helped identify and create new degree programs and serves as the chair of the campus's machine learning and autonomous systems program. Pritchard's current research explores machine cognition, information theory and the cybernetic design patterns between humans and machines. He has received grants from the U.S. Department of Treasury to modernize K-State Salina's machine learning and virtual reality infrastructure. "Dr. Pritchard's influence on campus has helped us reach numerous milestones and elevated courses in a short time," said Alysia Starkey, CEO and dean of K-State Salina. "His industry experience, conference presentations, published papers and the collaboration of two new degree programs make him a deserving recipient of this award. His service contributions go beyond the average faculty member, and he is often the first voice at the table to keep pushing the campus forward." TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Minneapolis public water supply system. This advisory is not related to COVID-19.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

●If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

●Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

●Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic ice maker.

●Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

●Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on Wednesday and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE issued the advisory because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

One state group sees increase of kids who have not previously sought treatment

MANHATTAN – Even as many parts of society begin to return to near normal routines, mental health specialists continue to monitor how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the mental health of Americans.&nbsp;

Elaine Johannes,&nbsp;the Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University, is especially interested in how teenagers are adjusting to new rules and ways of doing things.&nbsp;

“Many of us have had kids at home and we’ve raised some teenagers into adulthood and we understand what happens in that developmental stage where maybe the young person is not sure of their identity, not sure of how well they’re performing compared to peers, and maybe they’re not comfortable in their own skin because they’re growing so quickly – and that all creates anxiety,” Johannes said.&nbsp;

In the first few months of the pandemic, the&nbsp;<a href="https://4-h.org/about/research/#!healthy-living" target="_blank">National 4-H Council commissioned a survey</a>&nbsp;that concluded that more than 7 in 10 kids between the ages of 13-19 are struggling with their mental health.&nbsp;

Those numbers have seemingly not gotten better in the year since, as the global pandemic creeps toward two years of changed routines.&nbsp;

James Roberson, the vice president of programs and innovation for KVC Hospitals -- a system that provides children’s psychiatric treatment at facilities in Kansas City, Wichita and Hays – said his organization is seeing an increase of kids who have never sought treatment for mental health previously.&nbsp;

“The scary part is what we know about mental health,” he said. “It’s a little different from physical health because we don’t just look at the organic. We look at the context of the child in their environment, and the pandemic has really changed all of their environments.”&nbsp;

Roberson said support groups like KVC are working to become more visible in communities, break down the stigma of mental illness and work directly with families.&nbsp;

“I have not met a family yet that has regretted having their child engage in therapy,” he said. “The opportunity to get your child in front of a professional who can do an assessment and tell you that everything is okay, keep doing what you’re doing -- or to let you know that what they’re feeling is clinical – I think that is really valuable.”&nbsp;

Johannes said parents are key to their child’s mental well-being.&nbsp;

“It’s really up to the adults to understand their role in modeling, coping, talking about and helping the child to become resilient,” she said. “It’s the adults that can look for positive behaviors that they can support.”&nbsp;

Roberson added: “You don’t have to sit back and say, ‘is my child resilient or not resilient?’ No matter how old your child is, they’re actively developing resilience. If you’re present in their lives and you are helping them navigate the problems that they’re facing at school or in relationships…every time you help them solve problems, you’re building their resilience.”&nbsp;

Johannes said K-State Research and Extension is working to provide a mental health curriculum to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;Clubs that is a self-guided study on how children can recognize behavioral health in themselves.&nbsp;

KVC Hospitals also is&nbsp;<a href="https://hospitals.kvc.org/freeceus/" target="_blank">hosting a free, three-part webinar series</a>&nbsp;beginning Sept. 13 to help families recognize and cope with mental health issues. That series also is offering free continuing education units for professionals.&nbsp;

“We want people to have a sophisticated understanding of how they’re experiencing the world and how people around them support that. And I think teens are ready for this; they’re eager. DICKINSON COUNTY&nbsp;-&nbsp;Today, the Police Chief and Assistant Police Chief of the Herington Police Department were served summonses following an investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

On Wednesday, John V. Matula, 36, the Herington police chief, was ordered to appear in Dickinson County District Court for alleged criminal damage to property and criminal trespass, the KBI noted in a news release.

Also ordered to appear in Dickinson County District Court was Curtis M. Tyra, 43, the Herington assistant chief, for alleged criminal trespass.

The investigation is ongoing, the KBI noted in the release.

●Three people have died of COVID-19 since our last update on Friday.

●There have been 79 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Saline County since our last update.

●Salina Regional Health Center reports that 14 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19.

●198 variants were identified in the 322 samples sent from Saline County to KDHE for sequencing.

McPHERSON – McPherson College is introducing a new initiative that complements The Student Debt Project helping students and families reduce the amount of student loan debt that many accumulate during college. The Kansas Commitment offers full tuition for qualifying Kansas residents to attend McPherson College.

“The Kansas Commitment guarantees qualified Kansas residents full-tuition packages,” Christi Hopkins, vice president for admissions, said. “Couple this program with the Student Debt Project and families who may have thought they could not afford college can now realistically graduate with no debt.”

Kansas students who are Pell grant eligible and have a transfer or high school GPA of 2.5 or above can apply for the Kansas Commitment. The scholarship and grant package uses all forms of aid, both institutional and need-based, including Pell grant and Kansas Comprehensive grant. The package is renewable based on satisfactory academic progress and Pell eligibility. The Kansas Commitment is one more option offered by McPherson College to help students reduce the amount of loans they might need to attend college, according to President Michael Schneider.

“More than one-third of our student body is enrolled in the Student Debt Project, learning basic financial literacy skills like budgeting and being supported by mentors,” Schneider said. “Now in its fourth year, the average projected debt at graduation for those who participate in the program has been reduced by $10,000 per student. Student debt is an issue that has been debated in Congress for 25 years. I don’t think we can afford to wait for answers. It is our responsibility as a leader in higher education to solve the problem with innovative programs like this and our commitment to Kansas students.”

McPherson College offers several scholarship packages based on academic achievement, residency, participation, and area of study. Most students are eligible for up to $24,000 in combined Merit, Presidential, and MC Pillar scholarships. The research team studied 11 healthy adult males and females while performing incremental intensities of recreational cycling, from rest to exhaustion, and wearing three different types of face masks — surgical, flannel and vertical-fold N95 — or no mask. Regardless of the mask or intensity of exercise, the team found that face masks did not compromise oxygen levels in the blood or lead to hypercapnia, the buildup of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream. The research team included Carl Ade, associate professor of kinesiology, and kinesiology graduate students Vanessa-Rose Turpin, Shannon Parr, Stephen Hammond, Zachary White, Ramona Weber, Kiana Schulze, and Trenton Colburn, along with David Poole, university distinguished professor of kinesiology, and anatomy and physiology. K-State kinesiology study finds that face masks, exercise do mix

A children's literacy program promoted by the Salina Area United Way is the recipient of a national award.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is one of three winners of the 2021 Literacy Awards, the Library of Congress announced this morning.

“Literacy develops the mind and the heart, engages the intellect and imagination, and builds wide-ranging knowledge of the world,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “Through the generosity of David M. Rubenstein, the Library of Congress is proud to honor and celebrate the achievements of these extraordinary organizations in their efforts to advance literacy and enable people to survive and thrive in the world.”

2021 David M. Rubenstein Prize ($150,000): Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee The Imagination Library, also known as Dolly’s Library, is an initiative of the Dollywood Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Dolly Parton in 1988. Dedicated to improving the lives of children by inspiring a love of reading, the Imagination Library provides books free of charge to families through local community partnerships. It first launched in 1995, with 1,760 children enrolled from birth to age 5 in one community; each child in that community received one free book mailed to their home monthly for 60 months. As of March 2021, 1,828,800 books are now mailed every month to children in the U.K., Australia, U.S., Canada, Republic of Ireland, and dozens of indigenous communities, in multiple countries and territories.

Since 2014 when the Imagination Library received “best practice” recognition from the Library of Congress Literacy Awards, the Dollywood Foundation has strategically positioned the Imagination Library for aggressive growth. In 2018, it achieved a staggering milestone of 100 million books mailed to children, and two years later, at the end of 2020, it surpassed 150 million books. Although mailing the books to each child’s home is only one aspect of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, it is a remarkable feat that helps improve literacy on an international scale and creates special moments for children and families.

American Prize ($50,000): The Parents as Teachers National Center, St. Louis, Missouri Parents as Teachers builds strong communities, thriving families, and children who are healthy, safe and ready to learn by matching parents and caregivers with trained professionals who make regular personal home visits during a child’s earliest years in life, from prenatal through kindergarten. Parents as Teachers (PAT) began in the 1980s and is now the most replicated home visiting model in the United States. The center has trained thousands of early childhood family support professionals through its curricula and programs, which prepare home visitors and supervisors to implement effective parent education in literacy, health and human services. Other groups, such as Head Start, school districts and hospitals, incorporate the PAT curricula into their work. Parents as Teachers boasts almost 1,000 affiliates in the U.S. and six other countries, all comprised of people trained to coach, guide and reinforce parents as early teachers.

International Prize ($50,000): The Luminos Fund, Boston, Massachusetts The Luminos Fund provides transformative education programs to thousands of out-of-school children, helping them to catch up to grade level, reintegrate into local schools and prepare for lifelong learning. It delivers a joyful-learning approach in classrooms in Ethiopia, Liberia and Lebanon to help children cover three school grades of learning in 10 months. Supported by a number of foundations, the Luminos Fund provides a toolkit for other governments and nongovernmental organizations to adopt its core program, Second Chance. Second Chance students increase their reading ability while gaining confidence and a positive view toward their future. To date, the Luminos Fund has reached more than 152,000 children across the globe.

 </figure>By SALINA POSTA children's literacy program promoted by the Salina Area United Way is the recipient of a national award.Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is one of three winners of the 2021 Literacy Awards, the Library of Congress announced this morning.“Literacy develops the mind and the heart, engages the intellect and imagination, and builds wide-ranging knowledge of the world,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “Through the generosity of David M. Rubenstein, the Library of Congress is proud to honor and celebrate the achievements of these extraordinary organizations in their efforts to advance literacy and enable people to survive and thrive in the world.”Following is information about the three award recipients as provided by the Library of Congress.2021 David M. Rubenstein Prize ($150,000): Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee The Imagination Library, also known as Dolly’s Library, is an initiative of the Dollywood Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Dolly Parton in 1988. Dedicated to improving the lives of children by inspiring a love of reading, the Imagination Library provides books free of charge to families through local community partnerships. It first launched in 1995, with 1,760 children enrolled from birth to age 5 in one community; each child in that community received one free book mailed to their home monthly for 60 months. As of March 2021, 1,828,800 books are now mailed every month to children in the U.K., Australia, U.S., Canada, Republic of Ireland, and dozens of indigenous communities, in multiple countries and territories.Since 2014 when the Imagination Library received “best practice” recognition from the Library of Congress Literacy Awards, the Dollywood Foundation has strategically positioned the Imagination Library for aggressive growth. In 2018, it achieved a staggering milestone of 100 million books mailed to children, and two years later, at the end of 2020, it surpassed 150 million books. Although mailing the books to each child’s home is only one aspect of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, it is a remarkable feat that helps improve literacy on an international scale and creates special moments for children and families.American Prize ($50,000): The Parents as Teachers National Center, St. Louis, Missouri Parents as Teachers builds strong communities, thriving families, and children who are healthy, safe and ready to learn by matching parents and caregivers with trained professionals who make regular personal home visits during a child’s earliest years in life, from prenatal through kindergarten. Parents as Teachers (PAT) began in the 1980s and is now the most replicated home visiting model in the United States. The center has trained thousands of early childhood family support professionals through its curricula and programs, which prepare home visitors and supervisors to implement effective parent education in literacy, health and human services. Other groups, such as Head Start, school districts and hospitals, incorporate the PAT curricula into their work. Parents as Teachers boasts almost 1,000 affiliates in the U.S. and six other countries, all comprised of people trained to coach, guide and reinforce parents as early teachers.International Prize ($50,000): The Luminos Fund, Boston, Massachusetts The Luminos Fund provides transformative education programs to thousands of out-of-school children, helping them to catch up to grade level, reintegrate into local schools and prepare for lifelong learning. It delivers a joyful-learning approach in classrooms in Ethiopia, Liberia and Lebanon to help children cover three school grades of learning in 10 months. Supported by a number of foundations, the Luminos Fund provides a toolkit for other governments and nongovernmental organizations to adopt its core program, Second Chance. Second Chance students increase their reading ability while gaining confidence and a positive view toward their future. Imagination Library receives Library of Congress '21 Literacy Award

Possible medical conditions are being cited as the cause of two accidents on S. Ninth Street Tuesday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that dispatch was notified at approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday of an accident at S. Ninth Street and W. Cloud Street.

A 2018 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Rosalie Bonilla, 47, of Salina, was southbound on S. Ninth Street and stopped at the light at the W. Cloud Street intersection. A 1987 Lincoln Towncar driven by Michael Ramaika, 66, of Fort Atkinson, Wis., rear-ended the Malibu, Forrester said. When the light turned green, the Towncar pulled around the Malibu and continued south on S. Ninth Street.

Bonilla was not injured. Her car sustained minor rear end damage.

A short while later, the Towncar rear-ended a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu that was southbound and stopped at the light at S. Ninth Street/W. Magnolia Road, Forrester said. The 2010 Malibu was driven by Rhonda Keller, 61, of Salina. Forrester said Keller turned off, expecting Ramaika to follow, however he continued south on S. Ninth Street. Police were able to stop the Towncar just south of the W. Schilling Road/S. Ninth Street intersection.

Forrester said that witnesses had called in both accidents and followed the Towncar until it was stopped by the police.

According to Forrester, Ramaika was cited for duty to report an accident, inattentive driving, and no proof of insurance in the first accident, and has not been cited for the second accident. Ramaika's possible medical conditions were cited as the cause of the accidents, Forrester said.

Parents should model food behaviors for their children, says K-State’s Blakeslee

Back to school time means a new challenge for parents to prepare healthy and safe lunches that their children will eat. 

Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee shares a few tips to pack good health and safety into kids lunch boxes:&nbsp;

●Teach your child about nutrition by having them help you shop. “Encourage them to try a new food each week,” Blakeslee said. “And have them help you put the lunch together.”

●Plan a weekly lunch menu to help make shopping easy. Children are more likely to eat foods that they choose or prepare.

●Use the rainbow approach in choosing foods. “Make it colorful,” Blakeslee said. “If everything is all one color, it really makes a boring lunch.”

If the school has a refrigerator, ask about using it to store cold foods. “Try to choose foods that don’t require temperature control to make it easy,” Blakeslee said.●If a hot food is packed, use an insulated container to keep that food hot.●Include nutrient-dense foods; limit sugar, fat and sodium foods. “The more nutritious the food, the better the child functions in the classroom during the day,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;●Always remember to wash your hands before preparing any meal, including school lunch.&nbsp;Blakeslee is coordinator of K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Rapid Response Center</a>&nbsp;for food science where she routinely encourages food safety and healthy practices.&nbsp;As parents, she said, “be a role model for children to show them what foods are better for a healthy diet. Show them you enjoy eating a variety of foods to get them interested.”&nbsp;That may include having some fun with the foods given to kids.&nbsp;“Get out the cookie cutters and cut foods into fun shapes,” Blakeslee said. “These can be used to cut cheese or vegetables into a variety of shapes. Have the children make their own foods fun. Add fun notes to the lunch to give them a smile or a laugh and to help encourage them to eat their lunch.”&nbsp;Where safety is concerned, parents should always wash hands before preparing children’s lunch. “Plan ahead and store the lunch in the refrigerator to quickly put in an insulated lunch to grab and go,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;“Add a disposable hand wipe to help them clean their hands, if soap and water are not available” during their lunch time, she said.&nbsp;Blakeslee also suggested that parents remind children not to share lunches. “If a friend has a food allergy, it could be dangerous to them,” she said. “Talk to teachers and other staff about specific concerns regarding bringing lunches to school, such as food allergies.”&nbsp;Blakeslee publishes a monthly newsletter called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/newsletter" target="_blank">You Asked It!</a>&nbsp;that provides numerous tips on being safe and healthy.
