A Wichita woman had a scary surprise when she went to pay for her items at a south Salina store early Thursday afternoon: her wallet had been stolen.

The 65-year-old woman told police that while she was shopping at Marshalls, 2450 S. Ninth Street, a Hispanic male began asking her questions. She believes he was distracting her so her wallet could be stolen, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Later, when she went to the register to pay for her items, her wallet was missing. The incident occurred between 12:30-1 p.m. Thursday.

The wallet was described as being brown and tan with an alligator skin look, Forrester said. The woman valued the wallet at $20. The wallet contained $110 in cash and identification and financial cards.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., the woman's bank notified her that someone was using one of her financial cards at Target, 2939 Market Place. Forrester said the suspect purchased $1,250 worth of gift cards at Target.

The person who the woman believed was distracting her was described as being a Hispanic male wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans, a black fanny pack, a white ball cap, and a facemask.

Forrester said police were attempting to obtain security footage from the stores.
