Police are investigating the theft of several items, including cash and a handgun from two pickups in south Salina late last week.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between 11 p.m. Thursday and 6:30 a.m. Friday someone entered two pickups that were parked at a residence in the 2700 block of Bret. The owner told police that he thought one of the pickups was locked, however, $250 in cash and a GLOCK 19 Gen4 handgun valued at $650 were stolen from it, Forrester said. A pair of Oakley sunglasses valued at $250 were stolen from the other pickup, he said.

Additionally, the owner told police that he belived someone had been in his garage, as multiple cabinets had been opened, Forrester said.

Area surveillance video showed a black Chevrolet pickup driving slowly through the neighborhood while someone inside appeared to be recording images of the neighborhood with a cellphone, Forrester said.

Cash, handgun, sunglasses stolen from 2 pickups in south Salina

A Salina man faces an additional requested charge of theft after items from a stolen wallet were allegedly found in his possession by Saline County deputies attempting to serve a warrant.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies were sent to The Rodeway Inn and Suites, 3932 S. Ninth Street, Friday night to serve a warrant from Saline County District Court on Keyshawn Edwards, 23, of Salina. They found him in a vehicle in the parking lot and arrested him.

During the arrest, deputies allegedly found an ID and other items from a wallet belonging to a Chicago man who was staying at the Rodeway Inn and Suites, Soldan said. The man told deputies that the wallet, which also contained $170, was stolen from his pickup. The cash was not located.

In addition to the warrant, Edwards also was arrested on a requested charge of theft, Soldan said.

Sheriff: Man being served warrant also arrested for theft

A Salina man learned that his camper had been stolen after a relative saw it in Junction City.

Kevin Keller, 52, of Salina, told police that his 2019 Jayco Feather camper, valued at $25,000, had been stolen from a storage lot in the 3400 block of Canterbury Drive, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The storage lot owner, Carla Erlich, 52, reported that when she was at the lot at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, she found one of the gates open and the chain for the gate missing, Forrester said.

Keller was notified of the theft after a relative told Keller of seeing a pickup not driven by Keller pulling the camper in Junction City.

Junction City police stopped the pickup, which, as it turns out, was stolen out of Wichita, Forrester said. The driver, Brandon Cunningham, 38, of Wichita, was arrested by Junction City police and booked into the Geary County Detention Center Sunday afternoon on the following requested charges, according to booking information on the Geary County Detention Center website.

●Vehicle liability insurance; Knowingly drive uninsured vehicle

●Driving while license cancelled/suspended/revoked

When arrested, Cunningham was allegedly in possession of the lock for the gate at the storage lot. The lock was valued at $15.

Forrester said Salina police are requesting the following charges for Cunningham.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.1 magnitude quake struck at 2:19 a.m. Monday in far eastern Saline County. It was centered just west of S. Amos Road between E. Cloud Street and E. Magnolia Road.

The second quake was a 2.5 magnitude quake that struck at 3:54 a.m. Monday north of Assaria, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. It was centered just east of S. Old U.S. Highway 81 between Kansas Highway 4 and E. Salemsborg Road.

Two more minor quakes shake parts of Saline County Monday

Equity’s Kansas franchise now includes seven full-service locations in the Wichita metropolitan area, including Augusta and Rose Hill, and former ASBT offices in Belleville, Concordia, Clyde, Garden City, Great Bend, Holcomb, Larned, Macksville, Salina, and St. John. Free museum virtural program to look at area ghost towns

“Whatever happened to rugged individualism?” one reader of this column asked me. This was a reference to the widespread belief that each of us got to where we are by our own singular hard work.&nbsp; Nobody else helped us. And getting assistance from others is a sign of weakness. It harkens back to the glorified “mountain man” image of living alone in pioneer times.

I refrain from replying because it would be impolite. I would like to tell them to put on clothes only they made, mount the horse they tamed, astride the saddle of leather they cured, ride back to the log cabin they constructed—and stay off of the public roads! They are clueless of the extent that our modern society is only possible through a vast network of cooperation: a community working together. &nbsp;

The early prosperity of the United States rested on our huge supply of natural resources and our smaller population. In a simpler time, there was plenty of opportunity for a person to survive in relative isolation with “rugged individualism.” Today, this viewpoint mostly survives in our sparse rural West. In ranching country, you can still ride for miles without seeing another person.

But today’s world has 7.8 billion people and is growing. Many other cultures, especially in Asia, grew up in intensely crowded conditions. Asian languages developed a completely different view of a world where they lived elbow-to-elbow even in earlier times. And “in Chinese there is no word for ‘individualism.’ The closest one can come is the word for ‘selfishness’.” &nbsp;

This quote is one of many distinctions described by Richard E. Nisbett in “The Geography of Thought: How Asians and Westerners Think Differently...and Why” released in 2003. Nisbett is a Distinguished Professor of social psychology and co-directs the Culture and Cognition program at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He provides many examples of how Asians and Westerners “...have maintained very different systems of thought for thousands of years.”

Westerners focus on achieving control of the environment and of other people. Asian minds focus on self-control in order to minimize friction with others in their family and village.

Western thought is based on Greek debate, where one argument wins out over the other. The Asian mind is based in a Confucian ideal of maintaining harmony—of finding the middle way.&nbsp;

We think in terms of individual “rights”. Asians think in terms of an individual’s “responsibility” to a group. Our rights equals their responsibility.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;In English, my name is John Schrock. But in Asian languages, I would be Schrock John. Your family name and your family comes first. You are always part of your immediate and extended family.

As a person becomes old, they are respected. This is reflected in addressing the elderly as “Laode.” The term for “respected” or “Lao” is also in the general term for teacher “Laoshi.” Today’s Asian cultures still contain the Confucian ethic of respect for the teacher. Thus the term for teacher has this word for respect always embedded in it. They respect and value teachers. Westerners do not.

Western thought has a “certainty in consequences”—when an event occurs, we make an immediate judgement of whether it is good or bad. Nisbett relates an ancient Chinese story: An old farmer’s only horse runs away. Neighbors come to commiserate with him. But the farmer rejects their sympathy: “Who knows if it is good or bad?” he says. Later the horse returns, bringing along a wild horse. The man’s friends now congratulate him, but he replies again “Who knows what is bad or good?” A few days later, the man’s son attempts to ride the wild horse and is thrown and breaks his leg. Again, the farmer turns away his neighbors’ sympathy. Weeks later, the army comes to the village to conscript the able-bodied men to fight, but his crippled son is spared....and on and on the story goes. Asians can wait and see.

When this pandemic began, I reached for the face masks that I brought back from a winter semester when I taught in China in 2012. Throughout Asia, from Seoul to Shanghai to Singapore, everyone walking the streets wore face masks to protect others. Today, they cannot understand what we mean by “rights” and “individualism.”&nbsp; Instead they speak and feel “responsibility.” They reject individualism as&nbsp; “selfishness” which it is. &nbsp;

A review of Nisbett’s book concludes: “Understanding the thought processes of other cultures may very well turn out to be critical to the survival of Western civilization....”&nbsp;&nbsp;

EDUCATION FRONTLINES: Different language, different thinking

Today is Monday, Oct. 4, the 277th day of 2021. There are 88 days left in the year. 

On Oct. 4, 2002, "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh received a 20-year sentence after a sobbing plea for forgiveness before a federal judge in Alexandria, Virginia. (He was released from prison in May, 2019.) In a federal court in Boston, a laughing Richard Reid pleaded guilty to trying to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with explosives in his shoes (the British citizen was later sentenced to life in prison). 

In 1814, French painter Jean-Francois Millet was born in Normandy.

Eli Drilling will continue placing Bluebird underground fiber optic lines along City of Salina streets.

According to information from the city, Eli Drilling will have crews working in the area of E. Ash Street and N. Ohio Street. The crews will work south along the west side of Ohio toward E. Crawford Street.&nbsp;Work is this area is expected to continue through Friday.

Work will be in grass areas with minimum sidewalk closures. No road closures are expected at this time.

The fiber optic cabling and related facilities will connect existing cell towers and future 5G cell towers providing exceptional cell service and high speed networks.

City: Fiber optic work to continue along Ohio this week

GYPSUM - A 3.8 magnitude earthquake rattled a large portion of Saline County Sunday night.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake was west-southwest of Gypsum and&nbsp; struck at 9:58 p.m. It was centered west of S. Niles Road between E. Tinkler Road and E. Assaria Road.

ASSARIA - A minor earthquake rattled part of Saline County near Assaria this evening.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.6 magnitude quake shook the area at 6:02 p.m. Sunday. It was centered just north of Assaria.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced the closing of a portion of Lightville Road for railroad crossing work.

Lightville Road will be closed south of Kansas Highway 140&nbsp; Tuesday by the Union Pacific Railroad to work on the crossing on the south side of the highway. 

The work is anticipated to be completed during the daytime hours Tuesday. 

Local traffic is asked to find alternate routes during construction.

The commission information noted that this item was being brought before the city commission "in response from concerned business owners in the downtown area abotu horsedrawn carriage owners or operators in regards to the unacceptable practice of placing horse manure in flower beds, in another location such as a trash receptacle or a failure of not removing the fecal matter."

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider appointing the following persons to boards and commissions.

Salina voters can learn about city commission candidates during an upcoming candidates forum.

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and Salina League of Women Voters are sponsoring a virtual candidates forum beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

LINDSBORG - Works by Beethoven will be exclusively featured during a piano recital next week at Bethany College.

Sam Rotman is scheduled to be the guest pianist for the recital ar 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in Pearson Chapel. Masking is

expected regardless of vaccination status. The recital is open to the public at no charge, however, donations will be accepted.

Rotman received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School in New York City. He has been among the winners in five piano competitions, both in the United States and Europe. The most prestigious award was that of Laureate Winner in the 4th International Beethoven Competition in Vienna, Austria. In 1978, Rotman participated in the 6th International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. 

Rotman has given more than 3,100 performances in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, Eastern and Western Europe, Southeast Asia, South Africa, India, China, and Russia, totaling 61 countries. He has also served on the jury of international piano competitions, both in the United States and Europe.

Rotman has devoted a specific area of his musical life to the study and performance of the works of Beethoven. Beginning with a series of all Beethoven concerts in 1970 (the Beethoven bi-centennial), he was presented on Public Broadcast System in a special Beethoven concert. Rotman continues to perform the works of Beethoven in recital and with orchestra.

Rotman has released four recordings: Portrait of a Piano with the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff; Impressions: Piano Portraits of Claude Debussy; Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition with Piano Works by Rachmaninoff; and Piano Music of Beethoven. 

A video titled Sam Rotman, Concert Pianist: The Music and Testimony of a Jew for Jesus has also been produced. His testimony has been dramatized for radio by Unshackled and is also available.

In addition to his recital, Rotman will give his Christian testimony.

Piano recital at Bethany College to feature works by Beethoven

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced that part of S. Kipp Road will be closed for drainage work beginning Tuesday.

S.&nbsp;Kipp Road between E. Schilling Road and E. Water Well Road will be closed to traffic beginning Tuesday for the replacement of drainage structures. 

Weather permitting, the roadway should be opened by Oct. 22, 2021.

  Local drivers are asked to find alternate routes around the project area. 

 Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times, but only from the side upon which the property lies.

You’ve made the decision to leave your job. You’re almost out the door, and on your way to a new opportunity. But before you get too carried away, don’t forget to send a resignation letter.

A resignation letter is an email or printed document formally explaining you’re leaving your job. Sometimes a resignation letter is required for all exiting employees, so the company can have it for their records. But even if it’s not a requirement, it’s still good workplace etiquette&nbsp;to send one before heading out the door. It should never replace an in-person conversation, though, unless email-only resignations are a company policy, or you have an unusual, urgent situation that makes resigning in person impossible. Have the conversation first and then follow up with a formal resignation letter.

Your resignation letter should be emailed or given to your direct leader, and it doesn’t hurt to give a copy to your human resources department, too.

Resignation letters shouldn’t be long. They should state you’re leaving, give a&nbsp;brief explanation for&nbsp;why&nbsp;you’re leaving&nbsp;(if you choose to give one), say when your last day in the office will be, offer to help make the transition as smooth as possible, and express gratitude for your time with the organization. You don’t have to say things you don’t mean, but you should say something that’s professional and positive.

What&nbsp;not&nbsp;to include &nbsp;

Don’t speak negatively about your boss, coworkers, compensation or experience at the company. Remember, this is a formal record of your departure. It will probably stay in the company’s files for a&nbsp;long&nbsp;time…

It’s also not a good idea to rave about your new job in the letter, even if it’s your dream job. Don’t say anything that implies the company you’re going to is better, or pays more than your current company.

How to write a resignation letter&nbsp;

Okay, now it’s time to get down to business and write the letter. Here are seven easy steps to follow:

This doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple “(Your Name) - Resignation” will do just fine. If your resignation letter is&nbsp;not&nbsp;in email form, you should also include the date at the top left side of the page.

The standard greeting for a letter like this is, “Dear Mr./Ms. (your leader’s last name).” That’s the best practice here, unless you have a leader who insists that you call them by their first name and you’ve always done so. However, I’d keep it formal to be safe.

The first sentence of your letter should make it clear this is your formal resignation. Don’t beat around the bush or apologize. Just state the facts, and keep on moving.

4. Briefly say why you’re leaving&nbsp;

This part is optional, but don’t feel the need to make it a long, drawn-out explanation. This could be anything from “I’m pursuing other opportunities” to “I’ve decided to make a&nbsp;mid-life career change”&nbsp;to “I’m moving out of state to be closer to family.” It’s best to leave this part out if your real reason for leaving is because you dislike your boss, or you think&nbsp;your job is boring.

Don’t keep them guessing about your last day in the office. Make sure you’ve already decided on this date—which should ideally be at least two weeks away—in collaboration with your leader, or that you’ve made them aware of the date in person. Repeat the date in your resignation letter, so it’s in writing and there’s no possibility of confusion.

It’s a great way to go the extra mile for your team and your company. This can be as simple as saying “Please let me know if there’s anything I can do to help,” or as detailed as saying exactly what you’ll do to make the transition easier. Don’t promise anything you’re not fully prepared to follow through on.

This is the most important part. No matter how much you disliked your job or coworkers, you had a steady paycheck and an opportunity for growth and learning. The only scenario where I could see leaving this out would be if you were abused in some way, or the work environment was extremely toxic. Otherwise, thank your leader for your time at the company.

If you want to stay in touch with your coworkers, send them separate emails with similar details explaining that you’re leaving. Thank them for working with you, and let them know how they can contact you.

Keep everything professional, classy and thankful. It’ll leave a lasting good impression!

Beginning Tuesday, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a project to replace and install signs in Ellsworth, McPherson, and Saline counties.

The work is scheduled to be done along Kansas Highway 4 in Ellsworth, McPherson, and Saline counties, Kansas Highway 141 in Ellsworth County, and Kansas Highway 104 in Saline County.&nbsp;
