Don't forget: Fall Fix-Up and the City of Salina's free landfill day are Saturday!

The Friends of the River, which is organizing Fall Fix-Up, seeks volunteers for the annual community event, which is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

Volunteers will meet at their worksites, and are asked to wear facemasks and bring their own gloves. Social distancing will be manditory. Tools will be provided, according to information on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/smokyhillriver">The Friends of the River</a>&nbsp;Facebook page. Children ages 12 and under need to be accompanied by an adult.

There are a variety of projects with which to help during this year's event. Those projects include the following.

Ashby House Painting at the shelter, cleaning up flowerbeds, and removing debris and trash from properties. Meet at 204 S. Eighth Street.

Community Housing Development Organization Put new siding on a house, indoor painting, and yard work. Meet at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and N. Ninth Street.

City of Salina Putting medallions on storm drains about trash in the water ways. Meet in the parking lot of The Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

North Town Clean the landscaping at Five-Corners. Meet at Five-Corners, N. Ninth Street and N. Broadway Boulevard.

Homes on N. Ninth Street Scrape, paint, and do yardwork. Meet at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and N. Ninth Street.

Old Smoky Hill River channel Pick up trash near the Smoky Hill River next to the YMCA. Meet in the parking lot of the YMCA, 570 YMCA Drive.

Salina Food Bank Add mulch to the garden, do yard work, and plant landscaping. Meet at 255 S. Chicago Street.

Salina Rescue Mission Paint, do yard maintenance, move furniture. Meet at 1716 Summers Road.

The Temple Paint rooms and clean the theater. Enter through the red door on the north side of the building, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Additionally, the City of Salina has announced free residential trash disposal for all Saline County residents at the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. The landfill is located at 4292 S. Burma Road.

Customers must have Saline County license plates on their vehicles for free disposal. Vehicles from other counties will be required to pay normal tipping fees. Commercial waste haulers will be given priority (standard rates apply).

Fall Fix-Up, city's free landfill day set for Saturday

Happy National Cooperatives Month! As a cooperative communicator, October is full of educating people about and emphasizing the benefits of cooperative membership. Last year at this time, I wrote in this column about the history and value of cooperatives. To recap, we are fortunate to have robust, mature, and stabile cooperatives build on the foresight of our ancestors. During my recent travels to the Baltics with Kansas Farm Bureau’s Casten Fellows Program, building my cooperative knowledge was one of several highlights. A little context is important here. The Baltic countries all have relatively “young” farms started from scratch with a history of less than three decades because they were only liberated from the USSR in the early 1990s. That liberation came with the collapse of their existing system of agriculture, supply chain as the USSR utilized collective farms where the state mandated regions specialize in a few pieces of the system. In the Baltics the freedom to own land, farm independently and conduct free-market business has been tempered by the challenges of lack of infrastructure and capital, and inexperienced farmers and landowners. It should not have been surprising but my jaw dropped the first time a farmer shared that they were the proud member of a 2-year-old grain cooperative with 30 members. The farmer was also excited to share they were one of 10 farms starting a beef cattle cooperative. Even small cooperatives in Kansas have seven or eight decades of history and dozens to hundreds of members. I was primed with all kind of questions when we arrived at our first cooperative. It was the closest opportunity I would get to travel back in time and question my organization’s founders. I was not disappointed as both the general manager and chair of the board, who was also one of the founders, were both there to meet with our group. There were many similarities with us, like sourcing seed and fertilizer for members, grain storage and constantly exploring opportunities to add value for members. We also saw farmers having coffee, confirming that is a universal ritual of cooperatives. We all laughed when the chair told us we could not leave without discussing crop yields and land prices as he couldn’t return empty-handed to his neighbors. In contrast, we observed how being new altered their business. The cooperative had rented a barge and took on risk for grain until it reached northern Africa. It was exploring processing grain for domestic demand that was not being met. We were also reminded that their farmers had real skin in the game because they didn’t have past sales to build equity and capital. Their farmers had to buy-in with a membership fee assessed on how much ground they farmed. One of my most important take-aways for the trip came from this visit. I was curious about how they market the idea of cooperative membership to get people to buy-in. The chair’s response was a bit shocking. He said it was easy to sell the cooperative but they don’t really actively seek new members. He went on to say they could sign-up new members who would benefit from the cooperative but not be a good fit for the community. Their core group of members are neighbors who want to work together, not just for their own profitability but for the community. They are a small committed group. They work together, socialize together and grow together. Having that community mindset is more important than any other benefit when seeking or evaluating new members. Farmers in the Baltics reminded me that cooperatives are all about community. They are a community of people who act, risk their resources, and do things that benefit themselves and their neighbors, children and the industry. That mindset of working toward a common good and investing in the community not for shellfish gain sometimes feels absent in our lives here. As we celebrate Cooperatives Month, I challenge us all move away from the complacency that comes with our well-established roles in the community. Maybe taking new eyes to your community will help you to see needs and find ways to build something new or at least supporting something for the greater good.

Insight: Cooperative communities

Today is Wednesday, Oct. 6, the 279th day of 2021. There are 86 days left in the year. 

On Oct. 6, 2014, the Supreme Court unexpectedly cleared the way for a dramatic expansion of gay marriage in the United States as it rejected appeals from five states seeking to preserve their bans, effectively making such marriages legal in 30 states. 

In 1683, thirteen families from Krefeld, Germany, arrived in Philadelphia to begin Germantown, one of America's oldest settlements.

In 1889, the Moulin Rouge in Paris first opened its doors to the public.

In 1927, the era of talking pictures arrived with the opening of "The Jazz Singer" starring Al Jolson, a feature containing both silent and sound-synchronized sequences. 

In 1928, Chiang Kai-shek became president of China. 

In 1939, in a speech to the Reichstag, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler spoke of his plans to reorder the ethnic layout of Europe — a plan which would entail settling the "Jewish problem."

Five years ago: President Barack Obama offered 102 federal inmates the chance to leave prison early, bringing to 774 the number of sentences Obama had shortened. A jury in Norfolk, Virginia, acquitted a white police officer charged in the shooting death of a mentally ill Black man holding a knife.

One year ago: President Donald Trump, recovering from COVID-19, tweeted his eagerness to return to the campaign trail and said he still planned to attend an upcoming debate with Democrat Joe Biden in Miami; Biden said there should be no debate as long as Trump remained COVID positive. (The debate would be canceled.) Four weeks ahead of Election Day, senior national security officials provided assurances about the integrity of the elections in a video message, putting them at odds with Trump's effort to discredit the vote. The Food and Drug Administration released updated safety standards for makers of COVID-19 vaccines despite efforts by the White House to block them; the White House said the requirements could delay the availability of vaccines. A grand jury indicted the St. Louis couple who displayed guns while hundreds of racial injustice protesters marched on their private street. (Mark and Patricia McCloskey would plead guilty to misdemeanors; they were pardoned by Missouri Republican Gov. Mike Parson.) Eddie Van Halen, the guitar virtuoso whose speed, control and innovation propelled his band Van Halen into one of hard rock's biggest groups, died of cancer at 65.

Today in History - Oct. 6

HAYS — Spend a fall evening gazing at the stars with the Fort Hays State University Astronomy Club led by Dr. Jack Maseberg and Dr. Paul Adams.

 The Kansas Wetlands Education Center will host the star gazing workshop from 8:30-10:30 p.m. Friday.

Their high-powered telescopes will be pointed towards Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and several deep-sky Messier Objects. The Andromeda Galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth.

The International Space Station will fly over early during the presentation as well. The FHSU Maker Van will also be open with a cool Stellarium software you can learn to use at home and a few astronomy displays and planet models.

Refreshments, a craft, and storytelling will help round out this "out of this world" evening.

'Out of this World' with the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, FHSU Astronomy Club

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A suspect identified as 31-year-old Danielle Robinson of Salina,&nbsp; wounded by police during an exchange of gunfire at a grocery store in Wichita, has been moved from the hospital to the Sedgwick County jail, according to online booking records.

Just after 8p.m. Monday, police responded to report of a suspicious person with a gun in the parking lot of the Whole Foods store, 1423 North Webb Road, in Wichita,&nbsp; according to Officer Trevor Macy.

&nbsp;Multiple 911 callers reported a woman at Whole Foods acting strangely, drinking, and brandishing a firearm. Witnesses reported the woman pointing a gun at windows of the store, and toward the parking lot.

At the scene, officers encountered the woman, later identified as Robinson, who pointed a gun in their direction. They have worked for the Wichita Police Department for 8 and 19-years, according to Macy.

Gridiron Glory: Congrats Thaine Willer!

At a special meeting Tuesday morning, Salina Area Technical College’s Board of Trustees approved Ponton Construction’s bid of $1,075,000 to build a new student center onto the west side of Building A.

Construction is expected to start soon and be completed by July 31, 2022, in time for the start of the 2022-23 school year.

Salina Tech president Greg Nichols said that “as the number of students at Salina Tech continues to grow, so does the need for those students to have a place to go during breaks between classes.”

The college previously had a location, called “The Flamingo Lounge,” in an addition on the west side of Building A, but that portion of the building was demolished as part of a major renovation project more than a decade ago.

“A student center is an important part of the college experience,” Nichols said.

When Nichols was named president of Salina Tech in 2016, the college was already considering an entryway to the west side of the building, to create a more direct path to Building B, but those plans were put on hold. 

Nichols said, “I wanted to get a better understanding of the financial situation here and the needs of the students and employees,” when he asked the board to delay the project.

Since then, however, enrollment has continued to grow, and is up nearly 50 percent in the past five years.

So those old plans were dusted off and updated, to include more than just an entryway, and the Salina Tech Foundation began fundraising for the project early in 2021.

The addition will include a student commons area, a campus bookstore, and a dining area with fresh vending options.

The student center alone was estimated at $700,000, with another $180,000 added to the project to replace the entire roof of Building A, and an estimated $50,000 in needed improvements to the building’s HVAC system, for a total of $930,000.

However, prices for building materials have continued to rise, and Nichols said he wasn’t completely surprised at the final bids.

“We knew material prices were rising and decided to go ahead and do this now rather than later,” Nichols said. “We also have the option to negotiate some cost savings in the building materials.”

Nichols said fund raising for the project is continuing, and that once construction begins it may encourage potential donors to contribute.

“We have raised a large part of the funds needed through the Salina Tech Foundation,” according to Foundation Executive Director Larry Pankratz, “but we still have a way to go.”

He added that while there are naming rights available for the entire project or for sections of it, lead donors so far have waived that option, leaving that option open to future donors.

Powerball rolls back to $20 after big win in California Monday

A 12-year-old boy allegedly took a car and police on a tour of parts of southwest and central Salina early Saturday morning, sometimes at speeds up to 60 mph.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday, an officer observed a 2013 black Altima traveling at a high rate of speed near the intersection of Apache Drive/Arapahoe Avenue, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The officer attempted to stop the car, but it kept going. 

The officer caught up with the car near the intersection of Pontiac Avenue and W. Republic Avenue, where the driver activated the left-turn signal and then turned right onto Pontiac Avenue. When the officer again attempted to stop the car, it accelerated and drove all over southwest Salina and into central Salina, Forrester said.

The car eventually ended up on E. Minneapolis, where it encountered the dead end at the large drainage ditch. The car then drove on the grass along the ditch between E. Minneapolis Avenue and E. Beloit Avenue, where it attempted to drive around the guardrail at E. Beloit Avenue and hit a fence, Forrester said.

At that point, the officer exited the patrol vehicle. The driver then put the Altima in reverse, striking the patrol vehicle and causing minor damage. The Altima then fled southbound on Osborne Street and drove around central Salina, eventually ending up on S. 10th Street. Forrester said the Altima, which was southbound on S. 10th Street, unsuccessfully attempted to turn eastbound on W. Republic Avenue and struck a tree at 319 W. Republic Avenue.

The 12-year-old driver was arrested and then transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center with unspecified injuries. He later was released to his mother, Forrester said.

The car, which belonged to the mother's husband, was disabled in the crash and towed from the scene, Forrester said.

The boy faces the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

●Two counts of improper driving on landed roadways

●20 counts of failure to yield at stop signs and yield signs

●26 counts of improper use of a turn signal

Through its strategic partnership with Cirrus Aircraft, K-State Salina has purchased five new Cirrus SR20s featuring innovative systems, including electronic stability and protection and the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, or CAPS®, as an added protective layer for pilot and passengers. The campus will receive its first aircraft in the fourth quarter of this year and the remaining four aircraft in the second quarter of 2022. The addition of the high-performance Cirrus aircraft will provide students with the advanced-aviation training needed to become safe, professional pilots. "Cirrus Aircraft is dedicated to delivering safe and innovative flight training solutions for leading aviation training organizations," said David Moser, vice president of Cirrus fleet and special mission sales. "Our TRAC Series aircraft provide K-State Salina with an advanced platform that is ideal for training aspiring professional aviators." The campus also has added two more Beechcraft Baron G58s for complex, multi-engine training. "The Baron will continue to be a pinnacle for K-State Salina's flight training program," Strong said. "This plane prepares graduates for professional careers with their experiences in this powerful and sophisticated twin-engine aircraft." Strong said the diversification of the K-State Salina fleet allows students to begin training in the Cessna 172, a dependable training aircraft, and then&nbsp;move into the high-performance Cirrus SR20 with its advanced avionics and higher speeds. Finally, they can complete their multi-engine rating in the capable Beechcraft Baron, where they learn a more advanced system. OCCK Transportation is excited to announce a new addition to the “Guide &amp; Go” Travel Training program that teaches people how to use public transportation services in the region.

KanConnect Familiarization classes are now available for sign up.&nbsp; KanConnect Familiarization teaches the basics of riding the fixed route bus service that serves central Kansas from Abilene to Salina.&nbsp; It includes how to read the time table, find stop locations, pay fares, and general etiquette.

At this time, all classes will be held virtually, and will last about one hour, with the following schedule for KanConnect Familiarization for the remainder of 2021:

UPDATE Monday: The Lockard Road drainage work has been postponed for several weeks at the request of the contractor, according to information today from the Saline County Road and Bridge Department. More information will be provided once it is available.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced that part of Lockard Road will be closed Friday for drainage work.

Lockard Road between N. Muir Road and N. Lightville Road will be closed to traffic beginning Friday for the replacement of a drainage structure. Weather permitting, the roadway should be opened by Dec. 1, the department noted in a news release. 

 Drivers are asked to find alternate routes around the project area.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.
