GYPSUM - A minor earthquake shook part of southeastern Saline County Thursday morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.1 magnitude quake struck south-southwest of Gypsum at 9:25 a.m. Thursday. The quake was centered just west of S. Kipp Road between E. Hedberg Road and E. Lapsley Road.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The&nbsp;Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE)&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;Kansas Department of Wildlife&nbsp;and&nbsp;Parks (KDWP)&nbsp;have&nbsp;issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KDHE and KDWP urge&nbsp;Kansans to be aware of active advisories before participating in any water recreation including kayaking, waterfowl hunting and anglers. Blue-green algae blooms are unpredictable, and conditions can change quickly. Harmful algae blooms (HAB)&nbsp;typically begin in May and can occur through October or later. They generally coincide with longer days and warm water temperatures and often flourish in nutrient-laden waters. However, dead algae can wash up on shorelines and in marshy areas and persist for long periods. Children and dogs are most susceptible to toxin exposure.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away.&nbsp;These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.&nbsp;Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. If you, or your dog,&nbsp;come into contact with&nbsp;algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;Warning status&nbsp;indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure.&nbsp; Contact with the waterbody should be avoided.&nbsp;

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.&nbsp;&nbsp;

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A&nbsp;watch status&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.&nbsp;

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

●Signage will be posted at all public access locations.

●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.&nbsp;

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid&nbsp;direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.&nbsp;

●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.&nbsp;

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away.&nbsp;These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.&nbsp;

Jerry Ivey Park pond still under blue-green algae warning

Fort Hays State University announced Thursday email accounts for former students, faculty and staff would end next year due to changes from Google, the current email provider for the university.

The announcement was sent to all email users by&nbsp;Mark Griffin, assistant vice president of technology and chief information officer.

"As an FHSU Gmail user (@<a href="http://mail.fhsu.edu/" target="_blank">mail.fhsu.edu</a>&nbsp;email account), the University has been providing long-term access to Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos," he said. "We have been able to do this because Google has provided the university with free access and storage to their services. In July 2022, though, Google will be making a change that is requiring us to make some changes as well."

Griffin said the company will now charge for usage over 100 terabytes, a limit the university is already over.

"As of right now, we are using over 3 times that amount," he said.

With that change, Griffin said the university has decided to only provide accounts to those currently affiliated with the university.

"Beginning on June 1, 2022, FHSU will no longer be able to provide 'lifetime' email accounts," he said. "We will continue to provide Gmail accounts to our current students, faculty and staff. We will also continue to provide Gmail accounts for one year after they last attend FHSU."

Accounts will now only be active for one year after an affiliation with the university ends.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we wanted to provide everyone with ample time to make the necessary change," Griffin said. "Due to the changes that Google is making in the service that they provide to our university, we are unable to continue offering this service."

Police hope surveillance video will shed some light on who stole an SUV from a south Salina garage earlier this week.

Dennis Riordan, 67, of Salina, told police that sometime between 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and 6:30 a.m Wednesday, someone stole his silver 2017 Buick Enclave from his garage in the 900 block of Twin Oaks Drive, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

Riordan told police that he believed he forgot to close the garage door Tuesday night. When he awoke the next morning, the SUV was gone. The keys were in the Enclave, Forrester said.

The SUV, valued at $26,000, had a Kansas license plate of 720 ALB.

Police are checking surveillance video from the neighborhood, Forrester said.

The Saline County Sheriff's Office K-9 won the Patrol Dog Trophy Run from the Heart of America Police Dog Association while at recertification Sept. 26-Oct. 1 in Ankeny, Iowa, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

The certification categories included narcotics, patrol, tracking, and evidence collection.

Maggie, a Belgian Malinois, and her deputy, Craig Norris, competed against nine other K-9 units in the trophy run.&nbsp;

Now in her third year with the Saline County Sheriff's Office, Maggie has assisted with numerous cases, Soldan said.

The Saline County Sheriff's Office has used K-9s since the early 1990s, he said.

Students will gain a firm understanding of how to design and develop data for their companies and can implement what is learned during the course directly into their companies' information flow. CONCORDIA - The Cloud County Community College Foundation announced the conclusion of its most successful employee fundraising campaign to date. 

The record-breaking campaign ended with 71 percent of Cloud County’s employees gave to more than 50 different scholarships, athletic and academic programs, organizations, and other student engagement opportunities, according to a news release from the foundation.&nbsp;

Total giving increased by two percent over last year’s giving campaign, bringing in $35,997. This year’s internal fundraiser ran through the month of September would not have elicited such generosity without the vital contributions of 100 dedicated employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I cannot say enough about the amazingly generous individuals I get to work with at CCCC,” said Foundation Director Heather Gennette.&nbsp;“Their support of the Foundation and their dedication to the institution has an extraordinary impact on the students who attend the institution. &nbsp;I am extremely grateful for their overwhelming support during the employee giving campaign.”

October is National Women’s Small Business Month! If you know me, you know I’m super passionate about helping women start and grow their businesses, so I&nbsp;love&nbsp;that this is a nationally recognized thing.

In honor of this month, I thought I’d highlight some amazing female entrepreneurs in history. I’m so thankful for all the hard work they put in. They’ve inspired me and millions of others to go after our own goals. Here are three historical businesswomen I really admire:

Born in Connecticut in 1738, she grew up learning the printing business from her family and eventually moved to Baltimore. While there, not only did she take over running the city’s first newspaper, the&nbsp;Maryland Journal&nbsp;and&nbsp;the Baltimore Advertiser, but she also became the first postmaster of Baltimore and the first female postmaster in the colonies and then the U.S.<a href="https://outlook.office365.com/mail/inbox/id/AAQkADczYjM2MTkyLWE0NGMtNGU1Zi1hNjkwLTg4NWY4N2JiOGNjNwAQAPbTJh0jSkLmlunUgD4j6FE%3D#x__ftn1">[1]</a>&nbsp;How cool is that?

As someone who’s had my work printed and published, I’m super grateful for the legacy she left.

You might already be familiar with Madam C. J. Walker, recognized as the first self-made female millionaire in the U.S. She achieved amazing success as a developer of hair products and founder of Lelia College. But did you know that earlier in her life, she attended a cosmetics school and sold a line of beauty products founded by another entrepreneurial black woman named Annie Turnbo Malone?

Annie was born in Illinois in 1869. She had a passion for chemistry and hair care and built a successful business after creating products to improve hair health. In 1902, she moved to Missouri and founded Poro College Company. Poro was both a training center and a line of hair and cosmetic products that provided jobs for thousands of men and women (including Madam C. J. Walker). By the 1920s, Annie’s brand had grown so much that she was incredibly wealthy—and donated a lot of her money to philanthropic causes and institutions.<a href="https://outlook.office365.com/mail/inbox/id/AAQkADczYjM2MTkyLWE0NGMtNGU1Zi1hNjkwLTg4NWY4N2JiOGNjNwAQAPbTJh0jSkLmlunUgD4j6FE%3D#x__ftn3">[3]</a>&nbsp;I’m so inspired by the creativity and drive of&nbsp;both&nbsp;of these entrepreneurs!

Next time you’re giving goldfish crackers to your kids, just know you have Margaret Rudkin to thank. It all started in Fairfield, Ct., in 1937 when she baked a loaf of bread to help find a solution for her son’s allergies to other breads. Her son’s health improved, and soon, his doctor was asking for loaves for his other patients. Margaret’s bakery expanded and eventually became Pepperidge Farm, which was wildly successful throughout World War II and beyond for its breads, cookies and (of course) goldfish crackers. In 2007,&nbsp;Fortune&nbsp;Magazine even declared her the most powerful woman in business for the years 1950–1960!<a href="https://outlook.office365.com/mail/inbox/id/AAQkADczYjM2MTkyLWE0NGMtNGU1Zi1hNjkwLTg4NWY4N2JiOGNjNwAQAPbTJh0jSkLmlunUgD4j6FE%3D#x__ftn4">[4]</a>

This story makes me smile because when I was growing up, my mom also had her own business as a baker. She made cakes instead of bread, and her products might not be found in every grocery store, but she and Margaret share the same work ethic and loving mom heart.

Every October we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month to increase awareness of the importance of breast cancer prevention, screening, and treatment.

Did you know that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States after skin cancer? Some things you can do to lower your risk of breast cancer according to the CDC include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, don’t drink alcohol or limit alcoholic drinks, and if you have a family history of breast cancer or inherited changes in your BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your risk.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women have the option to start screening with a mammogram at age 40. Talk to your health care provider to determine whether screening is right for you.

For women who are uninsured or who can’t afford screening, assistance is available. The Early Detection Works program serves Kansans who do not have health insurance and meet certain age and income guidelines. Services provided by Early Detection Works may include free: breast cancer screenings, cervical cancer screenings, follow-up tests to find out if treatment is needed, and help finding resources for treatment. Saline County reopens W. Crawford after culvert work

HOPE - Two minor earthquakes rattled parts of Dickinson County Wednesday.

The first was a 2.3 magnitude quake that struck at 11:02 a.m. Wednesday, a little more than two miles east-northeast of Hope, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. The quake was centered just east of Quail Road between Kansas Highway 4 and 800 Avenue.

HOPE - Two minor earthquakes rattled parts of Dickinson County Wednesday.<figure>

 </figure>The first was a 2.3 magnitude quake that struck at 11:02 a.m. Wednesday, a little more than two miles east-northeast of Hope, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. The quake was centered just east of Quail Road between Kansas Highway 4 and 800 Avenue.<figure>

Two small quakes rattle part of Dickinson County near Hope

While Salina City Commission candidates brought varying opinions to a forum Tuesday night, one topic they agreed on was that housing is a big concern.

All but one of the city commission candidates were in attendance for the Candidates Forum that was livestreamed on the Smoky Hills PBS Facebook page. Because of the pandemic, no audience members were allowed in the forum, however, citizens were able to submit  questions.

The candidate forum was sponsored by the Salina League of Women Voters and the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

Candidates in attendance included Douglas Alt, Chad Farber, Michael Hoppock, Jerry Ivey II, Greg Lenkiewicz, Bill Longbine, and Matthew Smith. Elise Carter did not attend.

After their opening statements, candidates answered questions from local media and questions submitted by the public.

Concerning housing, Farber acknowledged that it was "a big issue for Salina." He said that the current city commission has been working on the housing issue for a while, but noted that he would like the process to move more quickly.

"I know that there are restraints with government and with incentive programs, and different things like that, but we are on the verge of a housing emergency here in Salina," Farber said. "We have new businesses that are wanting to relocate individuals to our town and there's simply no place for them to take up residence at this time."

Hoppock, who currently serves on the city commission, agreed that housing was an important issue and discussed measures the city already has taken.

"As you know, we have a significant number of jobs coming to the community. The current commission I serve on, we have been addressing that. A couple of weeks ago, we approved some IRBs in order to put a new apartment complex up out by Menards. We're in the process of approving an RHID for a new housing district out by Schilling and Ohio," Hoppock said. 

IRBs are Industrial Revenue Bonds and an RHID is a Rural Housing Incentive District.

Hoppock said he mentioned both of those measures because it is important to match the housing to the jobs that are coming.

"By using these two tools, we're able to reduce the rent or able to reduce the cost of housing," he said.

"We have quite a few housing subdivisions opening up: Stone Lake, Magnolia Hills II is opening up. Those are larger homes that will appeal to certain demographics," Hoppock continued. "What we're trying to do is bring in some housing that will hit that younger workforce."

Ivey said he would make housing a priority. 

"I would preferably work to bring developers in to maybe bring in some lower-income housing, middle income housing, too, 'cause I think that would move people out of the lower end and open up some of that as well," he said.

Lenkiewicz agreed that there was a need for housing.

"I can tell you that being in the property management sector there's definitely a need in the leasing part of the housing, and it's my understanding that there's definitely a need in single family residential homes," he said. "Being on the planning commission for the last five years, I can tell you there are things coming down the line that are gonna help improve this problem."

Lenkiewicz acknowledged the housing projects mentioned by Hoppock.

"We also have multiple housing developments that we voted on in the last year, year and a half. We have the development just north of Magnolia Hills, as mentioned before, the extension to Magnolia Hills. We have a new development that's just being started off of Cedar Ridge. And I think we've got a good start on trying to tackle this problem. We just need to nurture these programs," he said.

Longbine said that in the short term, he would like to see neighborhoods revitalized and infill of available lots.

"We need to find builders who would find it in their timeframe to build smaller, affordable homes. We have lots of jobs here available, but we don't have jobs that match the cost of housing in Salina, and affordability is key," he said. "We need to attract investments in apartment buildings -- as Commissioner Hoppock said, this was just approved last week -- that are not limited to age and income restrictions."

Longbine said he also would like to see some of the obsticles reduced that builders face trying to get projects approved.

"It's a long process, especially when you're putting in streets and utilities, to actually get a development in. We need something quick," he said.

Smith said he would like to see more housing that is affordable for working class families.

He said he would like for the time it takes to get building permits to be shortened, noting that it "seems like it takes quite a while.""Hopefully there would be some way that we could shorten that up to maybe get builders more encouraged to do more building," he said.
