Inspired by her grandfather, who fought the fascist armies in Spain during World War II, French-born conductor and musician Mélisse Brunet considers herself a fighter.

“I’m not afraid of fighting for what I believe I deserve,” she said. “It’s part of my identity.”

Now she’s fighting for a highly contested position in Salina as the second of five candidates vying to be permanent conductor/music director of the Salina Symphony.

Brunet is the lone female conductor candidate among the five finalists, but that doesn’t intimidate her.

“It’s a difficult profession for both men and women,” she said. “You have to have a high work ethic, you have to fight but be kind to others, and you can’t ever give up.”

The second concert in the “Pass the Baton!” music director search season of 2021-2022, “Give Birth to the Dream,” conducted by Brunet, begins at 4 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.

“Give Birth to the Dream” is an ideal concert program for these times, Brunet said.

“After going through a year of COVID, you really want to give a message of hope and resilience,” she said. “I want people to leave this concert with their eyes shining like they’re seven years old, so happy that they’ve forgotten what’s been bothering them.”

The program will feature guest soprano Janie Brokenicky, a Manhattan resident, in a performance of French composer Charles Gounod’s “Ah! Je veux vivre” from the opera “Romeo and Juliet.” Brokenicky also will be featured on composer Dolores White’s inspiring tone poem “Give Birth to the Dream,” based on Maya Angelou’s famed presidential inaugural poem “On the Pulse of Morning,” and narrated by the Reverend Allen Smith, pastor of Salina’s St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church.

Also on the program will be Salina Symphony performances of Camille Saint-Saen's “Danse Macabre” and Joan Tower’s “Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, No. 1.” The concert will conclude with Ludwig van Beethoven’s immortal “Symphony No. 7.”

Brunet said the program will be a wonderful showcase for all the talents of the Salina Symphony orchestra.

“I picked these pieces so all the sections of the orchestra could shine,” she said. “The strings on Beethoven, and the wind instruments on other pieces. I felt it was important for me to know the entire orchestra, their strengths and weaknesses. I will learn many things about them through these pieces.”

A native of Paris, Brunet began her studies in music on the cello. She also plays trumpet, French horn and piano.

“I had a challenging childhood, and the only place I was happy was playing the cello,” she said. “Music was my escape, the place where I could really express myself, a healing place for me.”

A graduate of the Paris Conservatory and the Université la Sorbonne, Brunet also has a professional studies diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a doctorate in conducting from the University of Michigan.

Brunet is director of orchestral activities at the University of Iowa School of Music, where she conducts the college’s orchestras in symphonic concerts, operas and musical theater and teaches orchestral conducting to master and doctoral students. From 2016 to 2021, she was director of orchestral activities at the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University, where she received the prestigious 2019 Outstanding Teaching Excellence Award.

She also is the music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, an orchestra of freelance musicians from the New York City and Philadelphia areas.

“I started conducting in different countries, but I’ve been living in the U.S. for the last 12 years,” Brunet said. “I’ve had great training, and I think I’m able to bring a European view of music to the orchestras I work with. I like to think outside the box.”

As an opera and musical theater conductor, Brunet has helmed productions of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti,” Menotti’s “The Old Maid and the Thief,” Strauss II’s “Die Fledermaus” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd.”

“I love any opportunity I have to do musical theater and opera,” she said.

Brunet said she applied for the Salina Symphony music director/conductor position because she was impressed with the Salina Symphony’s forward-looking staff and board, its dedicated community musicians, and its emphasis on youth education.

“They have great leadership here, a good team and a good board,” she said. “They put a lot into education, which I love because I’ve been teaching since I was 17.”

The ideal music director for the Salina Symphony, Brunet said, should be focused on both communication and community.

“You need a conductor who can communicate and also be a part of the community,” she said. “Through the arts, a community can grow. The arts help in so many ways.”

Soprano Brokenicky has been a featured soloist at the Meyerson Symphony Hall in Dallas and the Kauffman Center and Folly Theater in Kansas City. She also has been a guest artist with the Wichita Chamber Chorale, Hays Symphony Orchestra and Flint Hills Masterworks Chorale and served six summers as artist-in-residence for the Ad Astra Summer Music Festival in Russell.

While on the vocal faculty at Kansas State University, Brokenicky performed with the K-State Symphony and played the Queen of the Night in KSU’s production of “The Magic Flute.” Last summer, she performed in the world premiere of the opera “Our Trudy,” commissioned for the sesquicentennial Prairiesta celebration in Russell.

Brokenicky, who currently is vocal music director at Rock Creek High School and executive director and co-founder of the Flint Hills Children’s Choirs in Manhattan, said this is her first time performing with the Salina Symphony.

“They’re a wonderful orchestra, especially for the size of the community,” she said. “We’re lucky to have such a great orchestra in smaller communities that showcase local musicians.”

Brokenicky hasn’t met Brunet in person yet but said “we’ve had a lot of email correspondence” about the program.

“I can tell that she has a wonderful energy about her and is inspired by the music in the program,” Brokenicky said. “(Live) music ceased for awhile, and we’re so happy to help bring it back. It’s so important to our spirit, to our way of life.”

Remaining concerts in the “Pass the Baton!” series include “Take Flight,” featuring Yaniv Segal and cellist Hannah Collins (Jan. 30); “Melodic Journey,” featuring Yaniv Attar with guest guitarist Daniel Bolshoy (March 27); and “Symphonic Dances,” featuring Vlad Vizireanu and guest pianist Lorraine Min (May 1).

Music of resilience and hope

My boyfriend is not very good with money, and he is in a bad situation right now. He has a huge car payment every month, plus about $30,000 in credit card debt. He also lives in a very expensive apartment. He recently quit a really good job because he doesn’t like his boss anymore. He has talked about filing bankruptcy, and yesterday he asked if he could move in with me. I love him, but I’m also scared. I try to manage my money well by saving, investing for retirement and staying out of debt. What does this mean for our future together?

My guess is the guy’s not really&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/the-truth-about-bankruptcy" target="_blank">bankrupt</a>, but it sounds like he has some maturity and character issues that need to be addressed. I’m not saying things can’t change, but this is not someone to move in with or consider marrying anytime soon. You two would have a hard time as husband and wife unless he makes some real course corrections in his attitudes about money and life.

For starters, he needs to get another job, sell the expensive car and find a cheaper place to live. Leaving one position for another is okay, but deciding you just don’t like something and walking away from it without another job waiting—especially when you’ve got bills and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-calculator" target="_blank">a bunch of debt</a>—is just plain irresponsible.

Lots of people identify too strongly with what they drive or where they live. They come to believe those things are indications of their value or worth, and that’s sad. It means something inside them is broken, and bankruptcy isn’t going to fix that.

All this doesn’t mean he isn’t basically a decent guy, but it does mean he needs to get control of his finances—and&nbsp;that he’s got some soul searching and growing up to do.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced that part of Mentor Road will be closed for a bridge replacement.

Mentor Road located between S. Gypsum Valley Road and S. Donmyer Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday for the replacement of the existing bridge over Gypsum Creek. Weather permitting the roadway will be opened by the end of April 2022. 

 Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Friends of the Smoky Hill Museum wreath, poinsettia sale on now

The Saline County Sheriff's Office recognized personnel for their efforts to help save the life of someone found outside the Saline County Jail. 

In a post on the sheriff's office <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalineSheriffKS/">Facebook page</a>, Sheriff Roger Soldan wrote the following.

It's always good to recognize staff members with a Commendation for a job well done, it's even more rewarding when their actions save a life.

The Commendation reads as follows -

On September 26, 2021 Corporal Kaitlin Carter, Jail Nurse Callie Bendickson and Deputies Trey Palmer, Scott Olson and Wesley Hawley responded to a report of an unresponsive male laying on Elm Street just north of the jail. Once they arrived it was learned the subject was a known drug user and Narcan was administered. EMS transported the subject to the hospital. Medics said the male patient would have died if Corrections staff had not administered Narcan.

Congratulations on a job well done!

Saline County Sheriff's Office honors personnel who saved a life

If you're looking for somewhere to take your kids for Halloween, you have lots of options this year. Fun and candy abound as a variety of businesses and organizations are offering Halloween events.

The following events in Salina and Saline County are listed in chronological order and include new listings on Oct. 30 and 31st.

Salina Area Technical College is sponsoring a free Trunk or Treat from 3-5 p.m. Oct. 29 in the parking lot of Building A. Salina Tech is located at 2562 Centennial Road. There will be a one-way treating route. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Children will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite trunk.

Trick-or-treat downtown with Salina Downtown, Inc., and K-State Salina from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 29.

Salina Parks and Recreation's annual Community Halloween Party is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Salina Fieldhouse, 140 N. Fifth Street, and is open to the entire family. Activities include a Halloween costume contest with prizes, carnival games, and trick-or-treating for children from the department's community partners and businesses.

SM Hanson Music, Inc., will host its third annual trick-or-treat event from 2-4 p.m. Saturday. This year, the first 350 trick-or-treaters will receive a black chicken egg shaker. Additionally, candy will be available throughout the event. Social distancing is suggested.

Red, White and Boo..... is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Oct. 30 in the parking lot at 321 S. Broadway Boulevard. Bring kids of all ages for a fun, safe Halloween.

The Salina Police Department's Cops and Costumes is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Oct. 31 in the parking lot at the Salina Police Department, 255 N. 10th Street.

Retailers at the Central Mall, 2259 S. Ninth Street, are offering safe trick-or-treating from 3-5 p.m. Oct. 31.

Salina Fire Department personnel plan to hand out candy and safety items to children from 4-6 p.m. on Halloween unless they are responding to calls during those times. Following are the locations for the four fire stations.

Station No. 2: 1110 S. Santa Fe Avenue

Station No. 3: 2633 Belmont Boulevard

Station No. 4: 669 Briarcliff Road

Salina firefighters also encourage trick-or-treaters to be safe and look both ways before crossing streets.

High winds have pummeled Salina and the area for much of the day. And while the high wind warnings for multiple counties in our area are set to end at 7 p.m. Thursday, winds are expected to continue through the night.

A gust of wind equal to that of an EF-0 tornado blasted Salina this afternoon. The Salina Regional Airport recorded a 66 mph gust at 3:53 p.m. According to the Enhanced Fujita Scale, an EF-0 tornado has wind speeds of 65-85 mph.

Wind gusts were greater than 50 mph for much of the day. 

When the high wind warnings end this evening, those counties affected will transition to being under wind advisories.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Friday for the following counties in our area.

North winds of 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use caution if you must drive especially if operating a high profile vehicle especially on east and west running roadways.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory from 7 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday that includes Marion County.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has reopened the section of S. Kipp Road that was closed Friday.

S. Kipp Road between E. Cloud Street and E. Crawford Street was closed for the replacement of a drainage structure.

Gridiron Glory: Don't forget to make your picks for Week 8

With the November general election looming, Saline County is still in need of election workers.

Saline County Clerk Jamie Doss told Salina Post that she will be having an election worker training session on Saturday for those interested in helping with next Tuesday's election.

According to the Saline County Election Office <a href="https://www.saline.org/Departments/Elections-Office">website</a>, election workers must meet the following requirements.

●Must be a registered voter in Saline County or a 16 or 17 year-old who is otherwise eligible to register to vote, except for not yet being of legal age. K.S.A. 25-2804(a), (b).

●Not a candidate on the ballot, except precinct committeeman or committeewoman. K.S.A. 25-2804(b).

●Must attend a mandatory training class. K.S.A. 25-2806 

●Must be available to work on Election Day from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. or until all of the closing procedures have been completed.

●Have transportation to and from work site.

●All positions require that election workers meet the following criteria in order to complete the assigned tasks

-Be able to understand, read and speak English at an 8th grade level

-Be able to work in a busy environment for approximately 14 consecutive hours on Election Day

-Be able to work with multiple ballot styles in an accurate and timely fashion.

According to information from the Saline County Election Office, election worker positions include the following.

Supervising Judge: Be able to learn all aspects of the Polling Place site, supervise and assist 2-4 clerks, assign tasks to complete opening and closing procedures, and oversee all functions of the Polling Place site and handle various voting issues that may arise.

Provisional Ballot Judge: Determine the correct ballot style for voters whose information does not match the registration database and assist voters in completing provisional ballot procedures.

Cross-trained Clerk: Be able to learn all aspects of the Greeter, Check-in Clerk /Computer Operator, and Machine Clerk positions to facilitate a smooth work flow throughout the day.

Greeter: Be able to direct incoming voters in a pleasant and correct manner. Be able to answer voter questions on voting procedures, show sample ballots to voters, and queue voters into lines to avoid congestion.

Check-in Clerk: Be able to find voter names from an alphabetic list, check voter ID when required and complete a form with a voter’s assigned ballot style. Be attentive to detail.

Computer Operator: Be able to learn a computer-based electronic poll book, key names of voters into the computer, check voter ID when required and assign a ballot style. Be attentive to detail. Basic knowledge of computer operation is necessary, including accurate search, retrieval, and entering procedures.

Machine Clerk: Escort voters to the voting machines, set machines for correct ballot style for each voter and assist voters on use of the machine. Learn to operate voting equipment and troubleshoot basic equipment problems.

Advance Election Board Clerk: Be able to work multiple days, immediately before and including Election Day, opening and processing mailed-in advance ballots, escort voters to the voting machines.

All positions will participate in opening and closing procedures at the work site in addition to the tasks listed above.

Election workers are paid for their time. According to the Saline County Election Office <a href="https://www.saline.org/Departments/Elections-Office">website</a>, election worker pay is as follows.

●Clerks and Provisional Ballot Judges are paid $7.25/hr for Election Day and training.

●Supervising Judges are paid $10 on top of the $7.25/hr for Election Day and training. 

●Supervising judges as well as election workers designated as runners will receive additional reimbursement for mileage to transport supplies to the Election Office.

Saline County still seeking election workers

The latest data suggests below normal temperatures are becoming more likely for next week, according to the National Weather Service. 

Those persons with temperature sensitive plants outdoors should monitor the latest forecast, the weather service noted.

A Salina woman was cited after a two-vehicle accident late Wednesday afternoon.

Hector Martinez, 20, of Salina, was westbound on Debold Avenue and stopped at the red light at the S. Ninth Street intersection, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The light turned green and Martinez drove his 2016 Ford Mustang into the intersection, colliding with a southbound 2013 Nissan Rogue driven by Rachel Sauer, 39, of Salina. Forrester said Sauer failed to stop at the red light.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:25 p.m.

Sauer suffered minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital, he said.

The Mustang sustained substantial front-end damage and the Rogue sustained driver's side damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Sauer was cited for disobeying a traffic signal, Forrester noted.

Salina woman cited after two-vehicle accident Wednesday

A Salina woman was arrested late Wednesday afternoon after she was found driving a pickup stolen downtown a few minutes earlier.

David Jeakins, 39, of Salina, walked out of his place of employment in the 300 block of N. Fifth Street at approximately 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and found that his 2005 Chevrolet Colorado had been stolen, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Jeakins reported that a coworker saw a woman get into the pickup and drive away south on N. Fifth Street. The keys were in the pickup, Forrester said.

While officers were on their way to Jeakins' location, another officer spotted the stolen pickup near the intersection of S. Fifth Street/E. Mulberry Street. The officer stopped the pickup in the 200 block of S. Seventh Street and arrested the driver, Mary Willems, 25, of Salina, on a requested charge of felony theft, Forrester said. She allegedly had $25 in cash from the pickup in her pocket, he said.

A gift from a Kansas family gives unmanned aircraft systems students&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="https://salina.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;even more tools and equipment to help their education. Sandra Herder,&nbsp;Dodge City, donated more than 65 aircraft,&nbsp;materials and tools to be used by students in the unmanned aircraft systems program, enhancing the scope of the equipment the campus offers. The collection was from Herder's late husband, Paul. She said that some of the collection donated to K-State was built and flown by her husband since his childhood. Herder wanted to honor him and have his collection of remote-control aircraft be donated to a place where it could be a benefit. Paul Herder's connection to aviation runs deep as he retired from the U.S. Air Force and worked with the Titan program in Wichita, which sparked his enthusiasm to collect diverse aircraft for years. Because he wore glasses, Herder said her husband was not eligible to fly some of his favorite aircraft while in the Air Force. CEO and Dean Alysia Starkey said that the gift is an example of the campus's dedication to its Global Aeronautics Initiative, an effort to establish K-State Salina as a national leader for advanced aviation and aeronautical training. "The campus is honored to accept a gift like this to help provide students an in-depth experience that prepares them to be leaders in the unmanned aircraft industry," Starkey said. "This helps support our global aeronautics mission by enhancing the student experience and ensuring that our students learn with the best technology available." The Herder family's donation includes many items that students can use now to learn how some aircraft was constructed over 50 years ago. "This donation consists of fixed-wing, multi-rotor and remote-control helicopters, along with numerous other pieces, will allow students to practice flight skills and build their own aircraft," said Kurt Carraway, UAS department head. "The gift even includes a vintage aircraft from the 1950s era, an electric ducted jet."&nbsp;

Carraway said the Herder family's donation will be a great benefit to the Applied Aviation Research Center, the UAS Flight Operations degree program and the student-run UAS Club on the K-State Salina campus. The club is for students interested in the design, construction, operation and integration of unmanned or autonomous systems. The club also competes in competitions across the region. K-State Salina's UAS program includes two bachelor's degree options:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/degree-options/uas-design/" target="_blank">design and integration</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/degree-options/uas-flight/" target="_blank">flight and operations</a>. The department also offers a stand-alone minor in UAS.&nbsp;

Hang onto your hats! It's a windy one today. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning and wind advisories for counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a high wind warning in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

North to northwest winds at 30 to 35 mph with gusts to around 58 mph are expected.

Damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines. Some power outages can be expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around 

trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of 

your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.
