The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind chill advisory in effect from 3-11 a.m. Tuesday that includes the following counties in our area.

Quite cold wind chills are expected. Wind chills as low as 15 below zero are forecast.

The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Use caution while traveling. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

Wind chill advisories issued for Tuesday

PLATTE COUNTY, Mo. —A Salina man and a teen died in an accident just before 10 a.m. Sunday in Platte County, Mo.

According to the Platte County Sheriff, a 2003 Chrysler Town and Country driven by a 37-year-old man from Salina&nbsp; was westbound on 92 Highway near Highway B.

 The vehicle traveled off the shoulder and the driver overcorrected. The van crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck a 2021 Ford Edge driven by a 67-year-old woman from Platte City.

The driver of the van and a 14-year-old boy in the van were pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported two other passengers in the van, a six-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl, to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford was also hospitalized.

Preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol may be a factor in the crash. The deceased occupants of the Chrysler minivan were not restrained, according Sheriff Mark Owen.&nbsp;

The crash is being investigated by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team. Authorities have not released names of the victims.

Salina Regional Health Center is modifying its COVID-19 visitor guidelines due to improving numbers of COVID-19 infection in the community. Effective today, February 21, all hospital inpatients will be able to have two visitors at the same time. Visitors also will be able to alternate in and out of the facility throughout the day.

Visitors must come and go using the hospital’s main entrance between the hours of 5 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Hospital inpatients had previously been allowed to have only one visitor per day.

All hospital outpatients and Salina SRHC-affiliated clinic patients will continue to only be allowed to have one visitor/assistant accompany them for their appointments. This includes Emergency Department patients and outpatients with appointments for surgery, lab, radiology, physical therapy, and other services and doctor’s visits. Pediatric patients will continue to be allowed to have two parents/caregivers accompany them for their appointments.

“We’ve seen a significant decrease in the number of daily positive cases for COVID-19 and are hopeful these trends will continue,” said Bethanie McDowell, infection prevention director at SRHC. “We will continue to monitor local COVID-19 infection rates and make changes to our policies as needed following state and federal guidelines.”

• Inpatient visitors may only enter the hospital Main Entrance between the hours of 5 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

• Visitors are not allowed to access the main hospital through the Emergency Department entrance at any time.

Salina Regional Health Center modifies visitor guidelines

Scientists are being chastised for not communicating well with citizens about this pandemic. But communications involves two parties: a clear speaker and a literate listener. And the biggest problem these last few years is listener illiteracy. &nbsp;

It became evident that the masking effort in 2020—despite being only partially enacted—had dramatically reduced the number of influenza cases. But large numbers of the public dismissed this news, alleging that public health officials were just counting cases of flu as COVID-19. But the percentage of U.S. respiratory specimens submitted to the CDC that tested positive for influenza dropped from over 20 percent to 2.3 percent. Nevertheless, a large number of science illiterate Americans continue to believe there is no way to distinguish between flu and COVID-19.

The full explanation has long been available on the CDC website: “The CDC Influenza SARS-CoV-2 (Flu SC2) Multiplex Assay is a real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test that detects and differentiates RNA from SARS-CoV-2, influenza A virus, and influenza B virus in upper or lower respiratory specimens.” But despite the availability of such accurate information, a reader has to have some understanding of what “PCR” and “RNA” mean. In the United States, few outside of healthcare professionals have a clue.

Folks all want to know how “dangerous” a new disease agent is going to be. But that is an inexact word. It involves more specific factors such as how “contagious” it is or how “virulent” it will be and whether folks can be asymptomatic but still be carriers. In this pandemic, each of these distinctions has been important. But much of our population does not understand these concepts.

Many citizens think that we wear masks to protect ourselves. But early in this pandemic, researchers analyzed three scenarios: masks as “source control” where an infected person wears a mask and the aerosol particles are filtered as they breathe out, “wearer protection” where an uninfected person wears a mask to filter the particles being breathed in, and “universal masking” where both are wearing a mask. Research was clear. A properly worn face mask on an infected person is significantly more important in reducing transmission to others than a mask prevents an uninfected person from becoming infected. And the lowest rate of transmission is when both are wearing face masks. The concept is simple and taught in physics classes: diffusion. Yet few citizens understand diffusion. And simply talking about “one-way masking” overlooks this critical difference.

There are two parties involved in effective communication: the speaker and the listener. These concepts of “PCR,” “RNA, ” “aerosol” and “diffusion” cannot be reduced to everyday words. They require a minimal science education where these concepts are taught by knowledgeable teachers in science classes. Lab experiences make these terms meaningful. That has occurred in most of Europe and East Asia, but not here.

This problem of science illiteracy had already arisen earlier in medicine and pharmacy. When&nbsp; patients come into the hospital and are diagnosed with a serious ailment, medical doctors do not have&nbsp; time to provide the semesters-long human anatomy and physiology knowledge that explains their disorder or disease in full context. When you pick up your prescription at a pharmacy, you are now directed to a window where the pharmacist attempts to explain that three-a-day does not mean take all three at the same time.

Another complication comes from our prior success eliminating the major serious contagious diseases through antibiotics and vaccination. Today only a handful of elderly remember whooping cough, smallpox or the Mother’s March that funded the very successful polio vaccine.

No amount of simplified language can make up for listeners who do not understand the most basic concepts in modern health. If there is a major cause for this illiteracy, it is not to be found in scientists who cannot communicate well. The problem is over forty years of inadequate American schooling in human biology and related basic sciences at K–12 and university levels. And that problem rests with school boards, university schools of education, and our cultural disregard for academics.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EDUCATION FRONTLINES: Illiterate listeners

LINDSBORG - The featured soloists for this year's Messiah Festival of Arts have been announced.

The Bethany Oratorio Society has performed Handel’s Messiah since 1882, and Bach’s Passion According to St. Matthew since 1929, according to information on the <a href="http://messiahfestival.org">Messiah Festival website</a>.&nbsp;

Guest soloists for the festival include Anna Christofaro, soprano; Mary Beth Nelson, mezzo-soprano; Matthew Hill, tenor; and Leslie Flanagan, bass. Additionally, Matthew Reynolds, baritone, is scheduled to perform in Bach’s Passion According to St. Matthew on Good Friday.

Bach’s Passion According to St. Matthew is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. April 15 in Presser Hall Auditorium. Handel's Messiah is scheduled for 3 p.m. April 17 in Presser Hall Auditorium. Praised for her vocal agility and clear tone, Minneapolis-based soprano, Christofaro, is gaining recognition as an interpreter of a wide range of repertoire from early to contemporary music. She performed on the 2018 Grammy-nominated album, Tyberg Masses, with the South Dakota Chorale. Other highlights include performing at the Olavsfestagene Festival in Trondheim, Norway with the Grammy award-winning ensemble, Conspirare, and performing on their national tour of Considering Matthew Shepard by Craig Hella Johnson. She also has performed under the baton of Bach scholars Helmuth Rilling and Hans-Christoph Rademann at the Weimar Bach Academy and the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart in Germany.

Christofaro made her soloist debuts of Bach's St. Johns Passion with the Bach Society of Minnesota, Fauré's Requiem and Handel’s Messiah with the Minnesota Chorale, Mozart's Great Mass in C Minor with the Grinnell Oratorio Society, and Vivaldi's Gloria with Consortium Carissimi to name a few. She has also been featured on numerous Artist Series Recitals of music by Minnesota composers, Steve Heitzeg, Libby Larsen, Abbie Betinis, and Jocelyn Hagen. Other solo appearances include Handel's Utrecht Te Deum, and Mozart's Regina Coeli, as well as Bach's B Minor Mass and numerous Bach cantatas with the Bach Roots Festival.

A versatile performer, Christofaro has performed the role of First Lady in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the Amalfi Coast Music and Arts Festival in Italy. Other opera credits include the role of Maguelone in Viardot's Cendrillon, Serpina in Pergolesi's La Serva Perdona, Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Gianetta in The Gondoliers.

Christofaro holds a Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas and a Bachelor of Music degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

Mary Beth Nelson – Mezzo-Soprano

Nelson is praised for singing with "virtuosic abandon... joyous flair and assured beauty of tone" (Opera Today) at The Glimmerglass Festival, where she sang the role of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Scalia/Ginsburg. Following her success as the operatic Supreme Court Justice, she was invited to Washington D.C. to perform in the winter Judicial Congressional Dialogue, as well as the Bipartisan Chiefs of Staff Initiative, where she sang for members of Senate, House Legislation, and their staff, and both the Supreme Court and Federal Court judiciary. As a young artist with the Cooperstown, N.Y. festival over the course of 2016-2017, she appeared in roles in Oklahoma (Virginia), Francesca Zambello's production of The Crucible (Betty Parris), and Lost Luggage (Ernestina). Nelson was a resident artist with Tri-Cities Opera for two seasons, 2015-2017, where she made her guest artist debut as Isabella in L'italiana in Algeri, followed by Rosina in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Dinah in Leonard Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, Flora in La Traviata, Hansel in Humperdinck's Hansel &amp; Gretel, and Concepción in Maurice Ravel's one-act opera L'heure Espagnole. During the 2017-18 season, she was a member of the Florida Grand Opera studio, where in November 2017 she made her house debut as Alisa in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor and was commended for her "ample voice and dark foreboding" by South Florida Classical Review.

Garnering numerous accolades for performances of opera, art song, and oratorio, Matthew Hill has become one of the most sought-after tenors in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Highly regarded for his interpretations of Bach, his Evangelist was praised by Washington Classical Review for his "clarion high notes placed with unfailing precision." The 21-22 season includes his solo debut with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Handel's Messiah, Jack in Into the Woods with Annapolis Opera, and the tenor soloist with Bethany College's Messiah Festival of Arts.

Solo concert work includes Handel’s Messiah and Israel in Egypt, Mozart’s Requiem, Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, Stravinsky's Les Noces, Bach's Mass in B Minor, Evangelist in Bach's St. Matthew and St. John Passions, and numerous Bach cantatas, with ensembles including the American Bach Soloists, the Washington Bach Consort, and the Washington National Cathedral Choirs. Flanagan earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane, Australia, and a master’s degree in opera performance from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Music) in Glasgow, Scotland. Upon completion of his master’s studies, he became an inaugural member of English National Opera’s prestigious Jerwood Young Singer’s Programme in London. He received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma and accepted the position of vocal arts coordinator and director of opera and musical theater at Mid-America Christian University.

Roles with English National Opera included Rossini’s Figaro, Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, Schaunard in&nbsp;La Bohème, Morales in Carmen, Barney in the world première of Mark Anthony Turnage’s The Silver Tassie alongside Gerald Finley, Donner Das Rheingold, and Ned Keene Peter Grimes. Today in History - Feb. 21

The Salina Area United Way recently announced the names of six community members who have joined the local United Way board of directors.

“All these individuals bring different insight that I believe will benefit our organization greatly and continue moving us forward to better serve our funded partners in the community,” said Claire Ludes, executive director of the Salina Area United Way.

Each of the new members is scheduled to serve a three-year term.

Following is information about the new board members as provided by the Salina Area United Way.

Wilson has lived in Salina most of her life and loves to be involved in the community. She has more than 13 years of law enforcement experience and three years of experience in the Salina banking industry. She is beginning a new endeavor as a financial examiner for the State of Kansas.

Cook was born and raised in Independence, Kan. She earned a bachelor’s degree in workforce development with an emphasis in supervision and leadership from Pittsburg State University. Cook worked in insurance for 11 years before joining Great Plains Mfg., Inc. in August of 2012. She is currently the sales and marketing administrator for the Land Pride division.

Otto is a lifelong resident of Salina and is passionate about serving the community. She is a member of Salina Rotary, Kiwanis, and Noon Network Ambucs, and is a Leadership Salina graduate. Amanda is the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina and is excited for the opportunity to continue serving the Salina community.

Reitz is the director of advertising sales and creative marketing for Salina 311 and owner of Business Buzz Creative Marketing. She also served nearly three years as the director of sales at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Salina Downtown. Reitz was recently on the board of Salina Downtown, Inc. and currently is a member of the Love Salina and Kansas Crossroads Marathon committees. 

Goad grew up in Emporia and is a graduate of Emporia State University. She is a senior vice president/branch manager/loan officer at The Bank of Tescott and has more than 26 years of banking experience. Six new board members for Salina Area United Way

After an unseasonably warm day on Monday with highs in the upper 60s and 70s, it will turn much colder as Arctic air overspreads the area by Tuesday with highs only in the 20s and 30s.

Arctic air will become firmly entrenched across the area by Tuesday night with wind chills as low as 10 to 15 below zero across central Kansas and sub-zero wind chills across most of the rest of south-central and eastern Kansas.

It's Kansas: Unseasonably warm, then frigid

MCPHERSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after an overnight standoff in McPherson County.&nbsp;

Just after 1 a.m. Sunday, sheriff's deputies responded on an ongoing domestic situation in the 1000 block of Sixth Avenue in rural McPherson County, according to Sheriff Jerry Montagne.

MANHATTAN — In an effort to help support growth in agriculture, the Kansas Department of Agriculture is calling on industry partners to help identify workforce needs among agricultural employers in the state by conducting the second Kansas Agriculture Workforce Needs Assessment Survey. 

The survey will help KDA better understand current workforce issues, trends and needs within the Kansas agriculture industry to steer future discussions and identify solutions for positive changes for our state’s leading economic driver — agriculture.

Kansas farmers, ranchers, agribusinesses, manufacturers and producers of agricultural products are all being asked to complete the survey to help KDA identify the number and types of jobs in the state’s agriculture industry, and the specific skills required for those jobs.&nbsp;A similar survey was conducted in 2015 with results released in 2016.

“We continue to hear from our stakeholders that workforce is their number one issue,” said Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “KDA has partnered with several agriculture sectors to begin to mitigate the issue, but we know more needs to be done. This survey will help us better understand the employment needs of all employers in agriculture and help promote long-term workforce solutions for Kansas agriculture.”&nbsp;

Emporia State: Area students named to dean's list

“Due to the pandemic, it’s not been possible to travel and see the world. But now, the world has come to us.”&nbsp;

That’s a paraphrase of a sentiment expressed by one Kansan as he described the benefit of improvements made to the bicycle facilities in his community. These improvements have welcomed people from across the globe.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last week we met Donna Krug, district director and family and consumer sciences agent for the K-State Research and Extension Cottonwood District in Barton and Ellis Counties. She and her husband John live in Great Bend.&nbsp;

Donna grew up on a farm near the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of Washington, population 1,131 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural. “We had a tandem (two-seater) bike when I was a kid,” Donna said. After she and John married and had kids of their own, they rode bikes as well.&nbsp;

“We had always been a biking family,” Donna said. In 2000, she and John purchased a tandem bike for themselves. Bicycling became a passion.&nbsp;

“We’ve put 75,000 miles on our tandem bike,” Donna said. “We’ve ridden in every Kansas county and every one of the contiguous 48 states,” she said. While it’s not possible to ride a bike across an ocean, Donna still has hopes of riding a bike in Hawaii.&nbsp;

Donna learned of an organization known as Adventure Cycling that designates a TransAmerica Bike Trail. The route went through Kansas but bypassed Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;When the organization’s representative contacted Barton County’s Central Kansas Partnership looking for someone to do a route study, they were told: “Contact Donna Krug. She bikes all the time.”&nbsp;

Donna and John performed the route study, which involved measuring the width of highway shoulders, evaluating the quality of pavement, and noting support services available. Ultimately, this led to the route being redirected through Great Bend.&nbsp;

The study also identified the need for a bicyclist camping facility. Public camping is prohibited in Great Bend city parks. However, when she and John met the pastor of Central Baptist Church in Great Bend, they found that the church had an unused grassy lot on the property and was willing to let this space serve as a bicycling campground. In fact, it already had a bicycle repair station.&nbsp;

“It had been a (landscape) nursery at one time, so it had some nice trees for shade,” Donna said.&nbsp;

People pitched in to improve the lot. Volunteers installed a kiosk, bike rack, covered shelter, and electrical recharging station and repaired two picnic tables. However, there was no fresh water available at the site.&nbsp;

One day, John and Donna participated in Great Bend’s Friday night community bike ride.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Let’s show everybody the new campground,” Donna said. When they stopped there, it caught the eye of another rider who had recently lost his son to suicide.&nbsp;

“They need water here,” said the rider. “I wonder if we could drill a well?”&nbsp;

Ultimately, the rider was able to use funds from his son’s memorial, his family and the suicide prevention task force to drill a well that provides fresh, potable water for bicyclists at the campground.&nbsp;

It was a fitting, life-giving tribute to the deceased young man. Another young man had been in scouting with the suicide victim. He worked on the campground as his Eagle Scout project.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A memorial bike ride was held subsequently to honor the memory of this young man.&nbsp;&nbsp;“The organizers ordered 150 orange t-shirts for those who would participate in the ride, and they ran out,” Donna said. In the end, some 200 people participated. The two people asked to lead the ride were John and Donna Krug.&nbsp;

This campground has become a haven for cross-country bicyclists. “Without this even being listed on Google Maps, since August 2021 we've had people from 17 states, South Korea, England, Germany, Australia, and other countries,” Donna said.&nbsp;

We commend Donna and John Krug and all the volunteers who are making a difference by contributing to this project. As John Krug later reflected: “The pandemic has kept us from traveling the world, but this trail has brought the world to us.”&nbsp;

MANHATTAN - Photographs by the iconic Gordon Parks and rising star Doug Barrett are a part of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art's 25th anniversary celebration.

The exhibitions, Gordon Parks: Homeward to the Prairie I Come and Doug Barrett: Find Your Voice, are scheduled through May 28. The Parks exhibition, in the Marion Pelton Gallery, features photographs from a gift that Parks gave to K-State in 1973 and those made during visits to Manhattan in the 1980s, according to information from the museum. The Barrett exhibition, in the Archie and Dorothy Hyle Family Gallery, offers a glimpse of work by the "Manhattan-based photographer who makes compelling visual stories about people with whom he made personal connections, such as homeless veterans around the country and residents of Manhattan’s historic African American neighborhood," the museum noted in a news release.

"The exhibition also exemplifies Parks' influence on Barrett and other contemporary artists," the museum added.

The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, 701 Beach Lane, is located on the southeast corner of the Kansas State University campus. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Free parking is available adjacent to the building.

In addition to in-person viewing, both exhibitions are also offered virtually and have a 3D touring option. The exhibitions also can be viewed at <a href="http://beach.k-state.edu/explore">beach.k-state.edu/explore</a>.

The Beach Museum also plans to offer free public programs that "offer ways to learn more about these photographers and why their work is relevant." Those programs are as follows.

This free livesteam presentation is a gallery conversation with Richardson, a photographer for National Geographic magazine from Lindsborg. Scott, Academy Award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker Kevin Willmott and six-time Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard. Each has a vision for how the arts can function as a tool for making our society more just and equitable.&nbsp; Presence of Absence: Gordon Parks Through an Empathic Lens, at 7:30 p.m. CDT April 7, features Blanchard and the E-Collective in concert, with staging by K-State students under the direction of Scott and Mathew Gaynor. Since last fall, Scott has been working with a group of K-State students, under the direction of Gaynor, head of the K-State art department, on a unique digital stage set for the performance. Both events are free, but tickets are required for the April 7 concert and can be obtained at McCain Auditorium beginning March 23 at the McCain Ticket Office, which is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Tickets also can be purchased by calling 785-532-6428 during ticket office hours. Tickets are not available online.

The next Science on Screen® at the Art Center Cinema is coming up Tuesday! And it's free!

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Art Center Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe Avenue. Following the film, stay for Science on Screen®, with featured speaker Reese Barrick, director of Sternberg Museum at Fort Hays State University. Barrick will be discussing modern technology in archeology.

Now in its sixth season at the Art Center Cinema, Science on Screen® is a nationwide initiative to promote scientific literacy through entertainment, inspiring audiences an increased appreciation for STEM topics—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, according to a news release from the cinema. Science on Screen at the Art Center is free to everyone. 

Other Science on Screen presentations that have been scheduled include the following.

March 22 -&nbsp;National Night of Science On Screen - Film: First Man, followed by a Zoom discussion with Mark "Forger" Stucky, astronaut, who will discuss the future of commercial space travel.

Central Kansas Mental Health Center

Three additional staff members at Central Kansas Mental Health Center have passed certification to become mental health first aid (MHFA) trainers.

Gretchen Boyum, Julie Clayson, and Taylor Haws recently participated in a training course with other Community Mental Health Center employees from across Kansas. Upon completion of the course and evaluation they received the necessary certification to provide Adult MHFA training to community members.

MHFA teaches people how to safely and responsibly respond to and support people who are experiencing a mental health challenge, substance use disorder, or a crisis, using a proven action plan and evidence based tools. MHFA takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and helps reduce stigma. When more people are equipped with the tools they need to start a dialogue, more people can get the help they need.

CKMHC has provided MHFA training to several businesses and organizations in its service area, helping to create informed and supportive environments for both employees and customers.Taylor Haws is certified to teach both Youth and Adult MHFA. “I feel lucky to be a contributor in our area for MHFA awareness and training to help community members recognize when others are in need,” she said. “My hope is to increase community members’ confidence in supporting one another in finding appropriate mental health support when it is needed.”Mental Health First Aid was created in 2001 by Betty Kitchener, a nurse specializing in health education, and Anthony Jorm, a mental health literacy professor. Since then more than 2.5 million people in the United States have been trained in MHFA, including celebrities like Lady Gaga and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
