ABILENE - Navigating Leadership Through the Many Lenses of Adversity is the next scheduled Eisenhower Presidential Library Lunch &amp; Learn program.

Registration is now open for the virtual program, which is scheduled for noon Thursday.

Shukeyla Harrison is scheduled to share her experience working as an organizer for the Obama For America campaign and the many challenges that came with campaigning in Tennessee. Additionally, she will discuss how being in a leadership role during that campaign personally affected her life and goals.

Harrison received a bachelor's degree in sociology and criminology, as well as a master's degree in business administration, from Kansas State University. She is currently working on her doctorate in Leadership Studies, where she hopes to research and publish qualitative data regarding diversity and equality amongst corporate companies and their shareholders. She hopes to work as a consultant to businesses to help educate the importance of implementing diversity and equality within their executive and leadership roles.

We have officially entered the countdown to spring break mindset in our household. The recent winter blasts that have netted a few snow days for the kids are no longer acceptable for my children. They are ready for an extended, week-long break from school. And in their eyes, it can’t get here soon enough! &nbsp; They ask me daily how many more days until their beloved break begins. They have been constantly discussing in detail the grand plans they have for their week-long hiatus from all school responsibilities. My daughter is already planning out her wardrobe of sundresses, sandals and swimsuits, while my son is brainstorming plans for an adventure course he plans to build in our pasture.&nbsp; &nbsp; We have less than a month until my two can experience the “freedom” that they have been dreaming of daily, and there is no denying that their anticipation is showing loud and clear. &nbsp; When I asked my third-grader why he’s so adamant about aggressively marking each day off the giant calendar that hangs in our mudroom, his response surprised me. &nbsp; “Mom, the closer we get to spring break means the closer we are to summer break,” he told me. &nbsp; “And once it’s summer break, I can spend all of my time on the farm,” he added. &nbsp; I immediately made a mental note to increase the amount of chores for my boy this summer to ensure he will look forward to returning to school in the fall. &nbsp; For me, our children’s spring break is the final visible block on our family’s calendar of calmness prior to the start of an incredibly busy season on our farm. &nbsp; Aside from the expected spring sports practices and games that will begin occupying time slots during my evenings and weekends following spring break, the overall pace within our household will dramatically shift as well. &nbsp; Our winter evenings together at the dinner table will transition to meals hurriedly prepared and delivered out to fields while we plant our crops for next fall’s harvest. &nbsp; I’ll increase my audiobook consumption while navigating the dirt roads to deliver seed and equipment while the kids attend their final months of school. &nbsp; My visits to the local tractor dealership will become more frequent as I anticipate making many trips into town for parts as well. &nbsp; Secretly, I hope it takes a while for spring break to arrive this year. I want to soak up the calmness of the current season that we’re in. Unfortunately, I think I’m outnumbered in our house, and these next few weeks will quickly pass and usher in another season on the farm.

INSIGHT: Spring break secrets

Today is Wednesday, Feb. 23, the 54th day of 2022. There are 311 days left in the year. 

On Feb. 23, 1954, the first mass inoculation of schoolchildren against polio using the Salk vaccine began in Pittsburgh as some 5,000 students were vaccinated. 

In 1685, composer George Frideric Handel was born in present-day Germany. 

In 1822, Boston was granted a charter to incorporate as a city. 

In 1836, the siege of the Alamo began in San Antonio, Texas. 

In 1861, President-elect Abraham Lincoln arrived secretly in Washington to take office, following word of a possible assassination plot in Baltimore. 

In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt signed an agreement with Cuba to lease the area around Guantanamo Bay to the United States. 

In 1942, the first shelling of the U.S. mainland during World War II occurred as a Japanese submarine fired on an oil refinery near Santa Barbara, California, causing little damage. 

In 1945, during World War II, U.S. Marines on Iwo Jima captured Mount Suribachi, where they raised two American flags (the second flag-raising was captured in the iconic Associated Press photograph.) 

In 1998, 42 people were killed, some 2,600 homes and businesses damaged or destroyed, by tornadoes in central Florida.

Church Chicken Noodle Dinner fundraiser set for Saturday

UPDATE 4:30 p.m. Tuesday:&nbsp;Due to the weather, the start date on the bridge repair project below has been moved to March 2, according to information released this afternoon by the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Beginning Wednesday, the Kansas Department of Transportation is scheduled to repair four bridges along Interstate 135 in Saline County.

One of the bridges is located just south of Kansas Highway 140 (State Street exit) and three are located up to one mile north of K-140.

During the first phase of construction, the southbound I-135 ramp from K-140/State Street will be closed, traffic will follow a signed detour. Traffic on I-135 will be reduced to one 13.5-foot lane at a reduced speed through all four bridge repairs. 

Drivers should expect minimal delays, not exceeding five minutes.

APAC-Kansas Inc. of Hutchinson is the prime contractor for the $1.1 million bridge repair project, which is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2022, weather permitting.

UPDATE: Bridge repairs on I-135 in Saline County moved to March

EMPORIA - A Salina educator is among the 2022 class of Kansas Master Teachers.

The awards were announced this afternoon in Emporia.

Melanie Hammond, a chemistry/physical science teacher at Salina South High School is among this year's Kansas Master Teachers, according to information on Emporia State's <a href="https://www.emporia.edu/teachers-college/about-college/honors-awards/kansas-master-teacher-award-home/">Kansas Master Teacher Awards website</a>.

Other members of the 2022 class of Kansas Master Teachers include the following.

●Andy Battenfield, physical education teacher at Village Elementary School in USD 253 Emporia

●Karen Stohlmann Henderson, mathematics &amp; engineering teacher at Northwest High School in USD 229 Blue Valley

●Sarah M. Hoff, social studies teacher at Dodge City High School in USD 443 Dodge City

●Gina Johnson, fourth and fifth grade teacher at O'Loughlin Elementary School in USD 489 Hays

●Bryan Scruggs, instructional coach at Seitz Elementary School in USD 475 Geary County

Together, the class of 2022 has nearly 130 years of teaching experience, Emporia State noted.

Thanks to support from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, each master teacher will be presented with a check for $1,000, according to Emporia State.

"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Kansas Master Teachers as well as the 2022 Master Teachers will be honored on Master Teacher Day to be held Wednesday, April 6 at Emporia State University. The Kansas Master Teacher program suspended recognizing individual teachers for 2021," Emporia State noted on the <a href="https://www.emporia.edu/teachers-college/about-college/honors-awards/kansas-master-teacher-award-home/">Kansas Master Teacher Awards website</a>.

Air Supply to perform in Salina's Stiefel Theatre in May

A local man was arrested after a single-vehicle wreck in west-central Salina Friday night.

Terrance Johnson, 25, of Salina, was northbound on S. Broadway Boulevard near the intersection with W. Crawford Street when the 2005 Ford Escape he was driving left the roadway and struck a pole, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. Johnson was not injured.

Johnson was found to have several outstanding warrants and was arrested on those warrants, according to Forrester.

The Escape sustained front-end damage and was towed from the scene. The pole, owned by Evergy, sustained minor damage.

A check for suspicious activity resulted in the arrest of a Salina man on multiple requested drug charges Monday night.

Suspicious activity check leads to multiple requested drug charges

A local man was killed late Saturday in a single-vehicle wreck east of Salina.

Chris Engle, 51, of Salina, was westbound on E. Magnolia Road in a 2000 Ford F150 when the pickup went off the south side of the roadway, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

The pickup went through two fences before launching over the roadway, striking a culvert on the north side. The wreck occurred at approximately 11:05 p.m. Saturday three-fourths of a mile west of the intersection with S. Cunningham Road.

Engle was pronounced dead at the scene, Soldan said. He had been properly restrained and there were no signs of impairment, Soldan added.

The pickup, owned by BlueLine Remodeling and Contracting, sustained substantial damage and was towed from the scene. Engle was an employee of BlueLine, Soldan said.

Despite being tear gassed and maced at a murder protest in Kansas City, Dominick Williams kept snapping photographs of the scene.

Williams’ tenacity and determination to capture history with his camera lens would pay off. His photos of a protest march by Kansas City citizens, one of many nationwide sparked by the May 2020 murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, led to national exposure from the national news magazine The Atlantic.

“After I photographed the protest, I put the photos online,” said Williams, a former Salina resident who now lives in Kansas City, Kan. “An editor from The Atlantic saw them and requested the use of them for their website.”

Williams’ professional fortune continued. After covering a rally by former president Donald Trump in Tulsa, Okla., Williams’ photos of the event were published by both The Atlantic and Rolling Stone magazine.

“It was a great opportunity, so it made sense to keep doing what I was doing,” he said.

Williams will be showing a collection of his documentary photography and editorial portraiture at Subvert Studio, a new gallery space in downtown Salina, during First Friday events from 5 to 9 p.m. March 4.

“It will be an assortment of stuff I’ve shot over the last several years, along with stuff I’ve never printed before,” he said.

Subvert Studio, 116 E. Iron Avenue, is a combination art gallery and tattoo business owned and operated by Cody Sanders, a longtime friend of Williams. Sanders, a tattoo artist who opened the business three months ago, said he wanted to “add to the culture of what the city is trying to do downtown.”

“I wanted to have a new artwork space to keep me inspired,” he said.

Exhibiting Williams’ photography was an easy choice for Sanders’ grand opening event, but he said his decision goes beyond a friendship that began in middle school and continued after graduation from Salina Central High School.

“It was important for me to have someone from here for our first show, and someone from my generation,” Sanders said. “I’ve watched Dominick grow as an artist. He’s very good at capturing atmosphere and environment, creating relatable content and experiences of what we’re going through.”

Williams, who attended the University of Kansas and the Art Institute of Colorado in Denver, has previously participated in group exhibits, including a recent exhibit at Kansas Wesleyan University. He said this is his first solo show and is excited to display his work as part of the Salina downtown art scene.

“What I’m trying to produce is reflective of society in general, whatever the situation might be,” he said. “It’s all about keeping it real and honest about the subject.”

The opening reception for Williams also will include entertainment provided by DJ K-ODD (Salinan Chris Riley) and catering by Tyler Gallagher of Seraphim Bread in downtown Salina.

Sanders said he hopes this is the beginning of many shows and events that Subvert Studio will host downtown. His next planned show will be a group exhibit featuring selected Salina visual artists.

“I want to give people a platform in downtown Salina who may not always have an opportunity to exhibit,” he said.

New gallery space grand opening to feature Dominick Williams' photos

Tickets are now on sale for Southeast of Saline's 10th annual Baseball Sausagefest.

The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. on March 20 at the Assaria Lutheran Church.

The menu is to include sausage links, potatoes, rolls, corn on the cob, carrots, cabbage, and desserts. Additionally, there will be games, an auction, and fun!

10th annual Sausagefest to benefit SES baseball

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce today announced a new partnership that will allow employers to join together to purchase health insurance.

The Chamber Blue of Kansas association health plan is the result of a partnership of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas, and the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Kansas. Thirty other local chambers of commerce in Kansas are participating.

"The larger pool of people enrolled in the plan allows the possibilities for more plan options, and potentially, lower cost," the Salina Chamber noted in a news release this afternoon.

"The Salina Chamber and all chambers involved in this partnership realize and recognize that recruiting and retaining talent is vital for business and industry of all sizes, especially small businesses. Having access to trusted health insurance benefits is a crucial piece to that success. According to SBA statistics, small businesses equate to over 99.1% of all businesses in Kansas," the Salina Chamber continued.

To participate, local employers must have at least two employees and be current, dues-paying members of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

Those participating will receive the following, according to information from the Salina Chamber.

●A dedicated account management team with one-on-one support

●Stability of rates with a larger pool of participants
