A two-vehicle wreck in west-central Salina resulted in the arrest of a local man Saturday evening.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Steven Belcher, 63, of Salina, was southbound in the 600 block of S. Broadway Boulevard when the 2014 Nissan Frontier pickup he was driving was rear ended by a 1993 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by James Brown, 38, of Salina. The wreck occurred at approximately 6:25 p.m. Saturday.

Both vehicles pulled into a nearby parking lot. Forrester said that was when Brown allegedly offered Belcher money to not call the police. When Belcher said he was going to call the police, Brown left.

An officer responding to the accident saw the S-10 pickup traveling toward S. Broadway Boulevard from Duvall Avenue. The officer was finally able to stop the pickup on Armory Road, where the pickup pulled into the parking lot of Village Inn, 453 S. Broadway.

When the officer made contact with Brown, he determined that Brown was under the influence of alcohol. Brown was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

●Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol

●Interference with a law enforcement officer

The Frontier sustained rear end damage and was driven from the scene by the owner. The S-10 sustained front-end damage but was able to be driven, Forrester said.

Police continue to investigate the theft of a $15,000 ring from a central Salina residence.

A 35-year-old Salina woman told police that while she was at work Saturday night to Sunday morning, her daughter had some friends over to the residence in the 500 block of Sunset Drive. When the woman returned home from work on Sunday, she discovered that a drawer in her bedroom had been gone through and a $15,000 ring had been stolen, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The ring was described as being a circular diamond on a gold and silver band.

$15,000 diamond ring stolen from central Salina residence

Two women were injured in a single-vehicle wreck in northern Saline County Friday.

Misty Tersiner, 33, of Culver, was southbound on N. Hedville Road in a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country minivan when the vehicle left the roadway, went through a fence and struck some trees, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. The accident occurred at approximately 9:35 a.m. Friday, just north of the intersection with W. Humbargar Road.

Tersiner told deputies that she had seen something off to the east and while looking that direction, she slightly drove off the side of the road and then over corrected.

Tersiner and a passenger, Barbara Ross, 68, of Collyer, sustained minor injuries and were transported by Minneapolis EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Soldan said.

On Feb. 28, 1993, a gun battle erupted at a religious compound near Waco, Texas, when Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents tried to arrest Branch Davidian leader David Koresh on weapons charges; four agents and six Davidians were killed as a 51-day standoff began.

Commissioners are scheduled to hear a fire department staffing assessment and report. The report is an outgrowth of city staff's reporting on the fire department's use of admin time on Dec. 6.

The staffing assessment and report noted that several changes and updates have occurred since that Dec. 6 meeting, including the following.

●The city has hired a new fire chief. Last week, the city announced that Tony Sneidar had been hired and would begin his new duties in mid-March.

●A selection process to fill a vacant battalion chief position was initiated in such a way that the new fire chief could participate in the interview and final selection process.

●Work has begun on new time and attendance software with the initial implementation expected in June.

●City Manager Mike Schrage and Deputy City Manager Jacob Wood have met with the fire department command staff multiple times to discuss current responsibilities of the command staff, including the battalion chiefs, the chief of EMS, the fire marshall, and the chief of training.

The report noted that the "most immediate recommendation is the reclassification of Battalion Chiefs from exempt to hourly status which will be returned to the City Commission shortly accounting for feedback received from the Commission in response to this report," according to information from the commission meeting packet.

Additionally, the incoming fire chief, with the assistance of the city manager's office, will conduct the following, according to the commission meeting packet.

●Review and assessment of the work assignments and schedule of the fire marshall

●Review and assessment of the work assignments and schedule of the EMS chief

●Review and assessment of the work assignments and schedule of the training chief

●Review and recommendations regarding implementation of comp time

●Review and recommendation regarding implementation of shift trading

●Review and assessment of EMS call volumes and staffing

●Review and assessment of EMS transfers and staffing impacts

●Review of shift staffing levels and ability to reduce overtime expense

●Review and reassignment of selected duties currently assigned to battalion chiefs

●Review and recommendation regarding reinstatement of deputy chief position

Other items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday include the following.

●Conduct a public hearing for special assessment projects and consider approving on second reading and ordinance that would levy a special assessment for improvements.

●Authorize the city manager to execute a specialty contractor agreement with Kaw Valley Engineering Inc. for remedial design Phase 2 surveying support at the former Schilling Air Force Base site.

●Authorize the city manager to execute a contract for engineering design services with Wilson &amp; Company, Inc., for an amount not to exceed $464,212 for engineering services for Centennial Road and Arnold Avenue drainage and street improvements.

●Consider approving a resolution defining the parameters for establishing the Workers Compensation Fundreserve balance goal; establishing a Workers Compensation Fund Management Policy; and authorizing the city manager to administer the Workers Compensation Fund in accordance with the management policy.

●Consider approving a resolution authorizing increases for certain recreation program and rental fees above the threshold allowed by the Parks and Recreation Revenue and Pricing Policy.

●Consider approving a resolution that would move the Citizens Forum to the end of the city commission agenda.

Fire department staffing report among Salina City Commission agenda items

ASSARIA - A small earthquake rattled part of southeastern Saline County Sunday morning.

The 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck at 11:45 a.m. Sunday east-southeast of Assaria, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. The quake was centered just east-southeast of the S. Simpson Road/E. Hedberg Road intersection.

Small earthquake shakes part of SE Saline County Sunday

DICKINSON COUNTY - A series of earthquakes have struck parts of Dickinson County overnight and into Sunday morning.

The quakes followed two small quakes that rattled parts of Dickinson County Saturday morning.

A 2.4 magnitude quake struck at 11:47 p.m. Saturday northwest of Herington, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. The quake was centered south of Kansas Highway 4 (K-4) between Trail Road and Sage Road.

A 2.2 magnitude quake struck in the same area at 12:36 a.m. Sunday. It, too, was centered south of Kansas Highway 4 between Trail Road and Sage Road.

At 1:59 a.m. Sunday, a 2.0 magnitude quake struck a little more than a mile west of the previous quake. It was centered just east of Rain Road between 600 Avenue and K-4.

A 2.1 magnitude quake then struck at 9:08 a.m. Sunday west of Herington. It was centered southwest of the Trail Road/600 Avenue intersection.

A highly unusual event is coming back to Marquette for its second year - Bulls On Main Street. On March 18, in addition to a crowd of visitors, a whole herd of bulls will be hanging out in downtown Marquette. 

The unique event kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and cinnamon rolls at Marquette Middle School, followed by educational seminars from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. These seminars, hosted by the National Farmers Organization cover topics such as Animal Health and Nutrition - The Value of Vaccinations and Implants, Cattle Contracting Dos and Don'ts, Myths and Facts About Farmer Profitability, and more!

Lunch will be provided to attendees. To RSVP for the seminars, please contact Stan Vonstrohe at <a href="mailto:stanvonstrohe10@gmail.com">stanvonstrohe10@gmail.com</a>. A $250 travel and expense allowance is offered for qualified attendees.

Salina Public Library’s Youth Services Department is once again seeking enthusiastic teen volunteers to help out during its busy Summer at the Library. The library is accepting applications for VolunTEENs until March 31.

Volunteers will help tidy library areas and shelve books, help with children’s events, tend to the library book drop and assist with other tasks as assigned. Teens will learn job skills and workplace values, and make a difference in their community. Volunteers also earn eligibility for the Joe McKenzie Youth Scholarship provided by the Friends of the Salina Public Library.

Teens ages 13-18 who can commit to at least 16 hours of volunteer work during the summer are invited to apply. Volunteer hours will be needed between May 20 and July 21. Teens need permission from a parent or guardian and need their own transportation to the library.

Salina Public Library accepting applications for VolunTEENs

“Moving heaven and earth.” That’s a saying to describe doing everything possible to make something happen.&nbsp;

Today we’ll meet a Kansas company which literally follows that philosophy. This company is an earth-moving business and much more.&nbsp;

Max Jantz founded Max Jantz Excavating in 1974 with a John Deere tractor, one pull-type earth scraper, and what he called “a love of the land.” The first work headquarters for the company was the old barn on the family place north of Montezuma, Kan.&nbsp;

Max primarily did dirt work for commercial and municipal projects. He sought opportunities throughout the Midwest to grow the operation by expanding his skills, crews and equipment fleet.&nbsp;

By 2001, Max had gone from a one-man operation to managing a staff of more than 40 employees and an equipment fleet of more than 130. At that time, a strategic decision was made to focus on the development of turn-key dairy and beef cattle feedyard facilities. The company also underwent a name change and became the more inclusive MJE LLC.&nbsp;

As the business continued to grow, Max’s son and daughter joined the company.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today, son Aaron Jantz is chief executive officer and daughter Heather Jantz is chief operating officer.&nbsp;

Aaron and his wife have two children, as do Heather and her husband Aaron Albers who is a project manager with the company. Megan Elsey is director of public relations.&nbsp;

The expertise that company employees gained in designing, building and installing livestock equipment created an opportunity to serve others as well. In 2018, MJE expanded into a second line of business, called MJE Livestock Equipment.&nbsp;&nbsp;]Having long ago outgrown the original barn, MJE constructed a multi-million dollar production facility in Montezuma.&nbsp;

One of MJE’s customers had experienced a bad situation when a storm came through and damaged multiple calf hutches, which are small shelters for young calves. In response, the MJE staff designed a calf hutch latch and tethering system that would win them an award.&nbsp;

In addition to the calf hutch latch system, MJE Livestock Equipment produces fencing panels, gates, feeders, waterers, mineral feeders, livestock handling equipment, and more. These products are manufactured at the company facility in Montezuma.&nbsp;

Heather and Aaron are very committed to their hometown of Montezuma. “They’re super community-driven,” Megan said. MJE staff helped initiate a Chamber of Commerce in Montezuma, and Megan Elsey is the chamber president. MJE helps sponsor various worthy projects, including the Young Guns Rodeo for children and youth up to 18 years old.&nbsp;

However, in 2010, Max and Heather traveled to China to help with feedyard construction. MJE’s expertise has helped design a feedyard in California, and the company was recently studied by another business in Argentina. MJE Livestock Equipment products have gone as far away as Italy.&nbsp;

One of the company’s very large earth-moving projects was the construction of HorseThief Reservoir in 2010.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

It’s an impressive record for a business in a&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community such as Montezuma, population 975 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

 </figure>By RON WILSON Kansas State University“Moving heaven and earth.” That’s a saying to describe doing everything possible to make something happen.&nbsp;Today we’ll meet a Kansas company which literally follows that philosophy. This company is an earth-moving business and much more.&nbsp;Max Jantz founded Max Jantz Excavating in 1974 with a John Deere tractor, one pull-type earth scraper, and what he called “a love of the land.” The first work headquarters for the company was the old barn on the family place north of Montezuma, Kan.&nbsp;Max primarily did dirt work for commercial and municipal projects. He sought opportunities throughout the Midwest to grow the operation by expanding his skills, crews and equipment fleet.&nbsp;By 2001, Max had gone from a one-man operation to managing a staff of more than 40 employees and an equipment fleet of more than 130. At that time, a strategic decision was made to focus on the development of turn-key dairy and beef cattle feedyard facilities. The company also underwent a name change and became the more inclusive MJE LLC.&nbsp;As the business continued to grow, Max’s son and daughter joined the company.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today, son Aaron Jantz is chief executive officer and daughter Heather Jantz is chief operating officer.&nbsp;<figure>

In 2018, MJE expanded into a second line of business, called MJE Livestock Equipment.&nbsp;&nbsp;]Having long ago outgrown the original barn, MJE constructed a multi-million dollar production facility in Montezuma.&nbsp;One of MJE’s customers had experienced a bad situation when a storm came through and damaged multiple calf hutches, which are small shelters for young calves. In response, the MJE staff designed a calf hutch latch and tethering system that would win them an award.&nbsp;In addition to the calf hutch latch system, MJE Livestock Equipment produces fencing panels, gates, feeders, waterers, mineral feeders, livestock handling equipment, and more. These products are manufactured at the company facility in Montezuma.&nbsp;Heather and Aaron are very committed to their hometown of Montezuma. “They’re super community-driven,” Megan said. MJE staff helped initiate a Chamber of Commerce in Montezuma, and Megan Elsey is the chamber president.
