The Salina Police Department this afternoon identified the man who was killed early Saturday morning as Dylan Eugene Garman, 25, of Salina.

Additionally, the department announced that through their investigation, detectives have developed a person of interest, who they identified as Dalton Levi Palmer, 28. Palmer currently has an unrelated warrant from Saline County District Court.

Palmer is described as being 5'6" and weighing 140 pounds.

"Due to Palmer’s past criminal behavior, he should be considered armed and dangerous," the Salina Police Department noted in a news release issued Saturday afternoon. "If you have any information about the location of Palmer or if you observe Palmer, do not approach and immediately call law enforcement."

The Salina Police Department is investigating another homicide.&nbsp;

The department released the following this morning.

At approximately 3:20 AM on Saturday, May 7, 2022, Salina Police Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of South College Avenue, Salina, for a report of several gunshots in the area. Salina Police Officers arrived in the area and located multiple spent ammunition casings lying in the street.

Officers did not find any victims or witnesses at the scene.

At approximately 3:23 AM on Saturday, May 7, 2022, Salina Police Officers were dispatched to the Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) Emergency Room, 400 South Santa Fe Avenue, Salina, for a report of two gunshot victims arriving at the Emergency Room.

Salina Police Officers arrived at the SRHC Emergency Room, where the two gunshot victims were attended to by Emergency Room personnel. One shooting victim is an 18-year-old female, and the other shooting victim is a 25-year-old male. The 25-year-old male was pronounced deceased by medical staff.

Identification of the subjects are not being released at this time.

At approximately 3:34 AM on Saturday, May 7, 2022, Salina Police Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of East Cloud Street, Salina, for a report of a person lying in the front yard who had been shot multiple times.

Salina Police Officers located a 23-year-old male subject lying in a yard in the 500 block of East Cloud Street.

The male shooting victim did have multiple gunshot wounds and was transported by Salina EMS to the SRHC Emergency Room. This victim underwent emergency surgery and has been subsequently transferred to a hospital in Wichita, Kansas, with serious injuries.

Salina Police Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians are currently working at all locations and interviewing multiple persons. The Saline County Attorney was notified. It appears all shooting victims are related to the incident which occurred on South College Avenue. This investigation is a homicide case, and more information will be released when available.

Small quake rattles area northeast of Hope late Friday afternoon

McPHERSON – With a crowd of campus community members and industry partners looking on, McPherson College dedicated the Paul Russell and Company Center for Automotive Research on May 6, 2022.

The research center, made possible through a generous gift from Richard and Melanie Lundquist, LHD, encompasses the entire south wing of Miller Library’s upper floor in a newly remodeled area. The new space is named for Paul Russell and Company, the renowned classic car restoration company with top awards from the world’s most prestigious concours events including Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance and Ville d’Este. Paul Russell has been a part of the McPherson College Auto Restoration National Advisory Board for 20 years and is currently chair of the board. Throughout his time on the board, he has hired numerous interns and staff from McPherson College.

“I hope the students will take opportunities to find out what is in this collection, to encourage ‘time travel’ and that it becomes a place to browse and discover even when you are not required to be there,” Paul Russell said about the new library. “Automotive history is interwoven with our human history and reflects and has influenced every aspect of the twentieth-century life. Its study only enhances the hands-on aspect of restoration work by bringing understanding to life and times of the people who designed and built the cars when new.”

The automotive restoration collection contains approximately 25,000 materials including sales brochures from almost 100 different manufacturers dating from 1908 to the present and original Duesenberg blueprints. Other types of materials held in this collection include classic auto repair manuals, periodicals, and books on a variety of automotive subjects. The new space allows considerably more room for student research within the library. Resources in the open section are available for check out from the library while items in the special collection section remain in the library with access granted by library staff.

“At any given time, you can find students from across college disciplines making use of the renovated space,” Kristie Sojka, library director, said. “It is brighter, allowing materials to be more accessible and easier to find, and the new furniture provides a variety of comfortable ways for users to spend time researching. The space helps the library move forward in achieving our goal of creating a welcoming atmosphere while offering both academic and social spaces where students, faculty, and staff are able to connect with information and each other.”

The dedication helped kick off the annual McPherson College Motoring Weekend on May 6-7, a culmination of the academic year when students, alumni, and industry partners from across the country gather to celebrate the automobile. Other activities included the annual CARS Club Car Show, a student-run car event held on the campus grounds, and a Cruise-In held on Main Street in McPherson.

New McPherson College center honors classic car restorer Russell

MANHATTAN – In the United States, screens are everywhere.&nbsp;

Televisions, laptops, tablets, electronic bulletin boards and – of course – cell phones.&nbsp;

“Yet what we know about positive childhood development,” said K-State Research and Extension child development specialist Bradford Wiles, “is that screens are not very helpful. Often, they are simply a mindless activity that doesn’t grow children’s brains or their social-emotional or physical development.”&nbsp;

Many healthcare authorities and pediatricians – among them the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aap.org/en/patient-care/media-and-children/" target="_blank">American Academy of Pediatrics</a>&nbsp;– have published guidelines indicating children under age 2 should have no screen time, while everyone else should limit screen time outside of work or school to 1-2 hours per day.&nbsp;

Wiles, who has&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3248.pdf" target="_blank">authored a K-State Research and Extension publication</a>&nbsp;on the topic, says that there is an “opportunity cost” associated with screen time. “If you’re engaging in screen time, you’re not doing things that can help you with skill building in multiple domains – physical, mental and social.”&nbsp;

Screens, he said, are often substituted for babysitters, or a break for parents or other caregivers to get other tasks done.&nbsp;

“If that’s for a limited time, that’s fine; I understand the need to perform your household duties,” Wiles said. “You’re not harming your child by doing that, but be mindful of how much time is going by and do your very best to make up for that by being intentional in engaging with your children before and after screen time.”&nbsp;

Wiles is careful to indicate that technology, itself, is not the problem. “The problem is when you use that tool to isolate yourself or your children,” he said.&nbsp;

“If that tool is being used for engagement, then great. That is how children of all ages learn…through dialogue, discussion and shared experience. The ability to talk and learn with and from each other is really a benefit to human development.”&nbsp;

Other things to keep in mind, according to Wiles, include:&nbsp;

Families with very young children&nbsp;

Screen time should be severely limited for those under age 2 – ideally they should have none. Wiles said screen time is not nearly as stimulating as interaction with other humans. Spend time playing with young children instead.&nbsp;

Families with children ages 6-17&nbsp;

Establish “screen free” zones in the home, including bedrooms. It may seem like punishment – and difficult to enforce – but the payoffs are great. If families choose to incorporate more screens into their lives, seek ways to use them in active ways, such as singing or dancing along to a favorite music video.&nbsp;

Tablets and smartphones may provide an opportunity for families to play interactive games, such as puzzles. Less-skilled family members learn more by asking questions, receiving instruction and getting feedback.&nbsp;

Decide in advance what you will view as a family. Avoid watching TV during meals or leaving the TV on for background noise. In addition, avoid texting or talking on a phone during meals or when outside with your family.&nbsp;

Parents encouraged to reduce children’s screen time

A car parked at the Central Mall in south Salina was shot up with a BB gun while its owner was working Thursday evening.

A 30-year-old Salina woman told police that sometime between 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, while she was working in the Central Mall, 2259 S. Ninth, someone fired a BB gun at her 2022 Honda Civic, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The driver-side window had several holes and the driver-side door several dents.

Damage was estimated at $2,000, Forrester said.

An Ellsworth woman was cited after a three-vehicle wreck in south Salina Thursday morning.

Patricia Allen, 66, of Ellsworth, was westbound on W. Magnolia Road in a 2016 Nissan Sentra when she attempted to turn south onto S. Ninth Street. Allen turned in front of an eastbound 2005 Mercury Marquis driven by Douglas Gormley, 60, of Salina, striking the car, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The impact caused the Mercury to strike an eastbound 1985 Chevrolet El Camino driven by Dennis Powell, 73, of Salina, Forrester said.

The Sentra had passenger-side damage and was towed. The Mercury had major front-end damage and was towed. The El Camino had front-end damage and was able to be driven away by Powell.

Allen was cited for failure to yield, Forrester said.

Three vehicles collide in south Salina; Ellsworth woman cited

A local man was arrested Thursday in connection to multiple theft cases in Salina.

Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Jeremiah Hayes said this morning that deputies were sent to the 3500 block of Gerard northwest of Salina for the report of a possible stolen camper being at the Saline County State Fishing Lake.

When they arrived, they discovered that the camper was, indeed, one reported stolen recently in Salina, Hayes said. 

As deputies were preparing to hook up the camper to take it to the sheriff's office for further investigation, a pickup started to pull into the lake drive, then suddenly backed up and took off on Gerard Road at a high rate of speed, Hayes said. A pursuit ensued and eventually the pickup and its driver, identified as Christopher Gochanour, 27, of Salina, were located at a motel on Diamond Drive in north Salina.

When law enforcement personnel arrived at the motel, Gochanour fled on foot, but was quickly apprehended.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said personnel from both the Salina Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted in the pursuit.

Both the camper and the pickup were taken to the sheriff's office.

Inside, they found a number of power tools and hand tools, some of which were determined to be stolen from the City of Salina's maintenance building in Sunset Park. Additionally, methamphetamine was found in the pickup and marijuana was found in the camper.

Hayes said the insignias and other identifying marks on the camper had been covered with spray paint and the pickup had a license plate from another pickup that looked similar to the one Gochanour was driving, Hayes said.

In addition, mail belonging to a Salina resident was found in the camper and an insurance check made out to that person was found in the pickup, Hayes said.

Gochanour, who had an active warrant out of Saline County, was arrested on that warrant, Hayes said. Additionally, Gochanour was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, according to the Saline County Jail booking activity report.

The festivities kick off with the UNwrap Party for the 12th annual SculptureTour Salina exhibit. The 22 sculptures created by artists from around the country will be simultaneously unwrapped at precisely 11 a.m. throughout the downtown area.

“We are very excited about the 2022 exhibit,” said Sylvia Rice, committee member of SculptureTour Salina. “The SculptureTour Salina 2022 exhibit is quite diverse, consisting of 22 sculptures from 19 different artists traveling in from seven different states. This year we welcome several new artists, which is a great success!”

According to SculptureTour Salina, the UNwrap Party is guaranteed free fun for the whole family.

Once the sculptures are unwrapped, partygoers are encouraged to check them out and vote for their favorite one. Pick up Walking Tour/Ballots at the silver boxes at the mid-block pedestrian crossings, many of the downtown merchants or at the Visit Salina Info trailer located in 67401 Plaza on the southwest corner of Santa Fe and Ash.

Each year, the People’s Choice Award is determined by members of the public who complete and submit a ballot by the end of December. The winning sculpture is purchased by the City of Salina and put in a permanent location for all to enjoy.

In addition to the new sculptures being unwrapped, the awards for the 2021 SculptureTour Salina exhibit will be announced at 1 p.m. on the new stage at the 67401 Plaza.

 </figure>By SALINA POSTThere's a party goin' on right here in downtown Salina Saturday!The festivities kick off with the UNwrap Party for the 12th annual SculptureTour Salina exhibit. The 22 sculptures created by artists from around the country will be simultaneously unwrapped at precisely 11 a.m. throughout the downtown area.“We are very excited about the 2022 exhibit,” said Sylvia Rice, committee member of SculptureTour Salina. “The SculptureTour Salina 2022 exhibit is quite diverse, consisting of 22 sculptures from 19 different artists traveling in from seven different states. This year we welcome several new artists, which is a great success!”According to SculptureTour Salina, the UNwrap Party is guaranteed free fun for the whole family.Once the sculptures are unwrapped, partygoers are encouraged to check them out and vote for their favorite one. Pick up Walking Tour/Ballots at the silver boxes at the mid-block pedestrian crossings, many of the downtown merchants or at the Visit Salina Info trailer located in 67401 Plaza on the southwest corner of Santa Fe and Ash.Each year, the People’s Choice Award is determined by members of the public who complete and submit a ballot by the end of December. The winning sculpture is purchased by the City of Salina and put in a permanent location for all to enjoy.In addition to the new sculptures being unwrapped, the awards for the 2021 SculptureTour Salina exhibit will be announced at 1 p.m. on the new stage at the 67401 Plaza.<figure>

Salina Downtown, Inc., and Vortex Global are hosting a Spring Spritzer that will include food, drink, entertainment, and fun at the new stage in the 67401 Plaza. Admission is free.Please bring your lawn chairs so you can hang out at jam at the new stage. Please do not, however, bring coolers or pets to the event.The Food by Bonnie food truck will open at 11 a.m. and will be serving lemonade spritzers, gourmet grilled cheeses, and more!Color Me Crazy face painting will be on hand to paint children's faces.Additionally, beer, hard seltzer, non-alcoholic seltzer, and water will be for sale during the event.The Tamara Howe School of Dance is scheduled to perform at 2 p.m.Shannon's Stars will help Salina Downtown celebrate The Cozy Inn's 100th birthday.Then get ready for some Whiskey Barrell Rock as Salina's own Sunset Sinners take the stage at 3 p.m.&nbsp;"Salina Downtown Inc has been working hard to increase the programming downtown.
