The Saline County Health Department will end regular reporting of "COVID by the Numbers," March 9. At this time the Saline County COVID dashboard will also be removed.

While our public reporting is ending, the County Health Department will continue to provide COVID services as needed and as we are able.

Since the pandemic began much of our staffing, time, and resources have been diverted to combat the pandemic. Unfortunately, many long-standing and valuable programs provided by the Health Department have not received the attention they merit during that time. Our staff is looking forward to a renewed focus on programming and services unrelated to COVID.

The goal of public reporting was to give the public an accurate understanding of COVID in our county. Welcome changes like reliable at-home testing like ubiquitous at home testing, means reported data is less reflective of the overall situation. Additionally, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has taken over all new COVID case investigations.

Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center Graduates 289th Basic Training Class

Nineteen new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on February 25th at a ceremony held in the KLETC Integrity Auditorium.&nbsp;

Deputy David Carrillo of the Seward County Sheriff’s Office was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Doug Schroeder, Executive Director of the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training. Rob McClarty, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the Class Coordinator for the 289th Basic Training Class.

Deputy Shane Coleman of the Geary County Sheriff’s Office achieved the Director’s Honor Roll and was awarded the Welch Academic Award for academic excellence. Officers Nicholas Martinez of the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office and Christian Rivas of the Great Bend Police Department both were inducted into the KLETC 200 Mile Club. Officer Rivas also received the Fitness Medal for having the best overall improvement in the push-ups, sit-ups, and the 1.5 mile run as well as having logged the most miles of the two Officers. Officer Martinez was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class’ “Top Shot”.

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty. Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county, and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol. About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of the University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.

Attention golfers: Have you registered yet for the Kansas JCI Foundation's four-person golf tournament?

Funds raised during the annual tournament on April 2 will be used to provide scholarships to high school seniors for college or trade school education. The goal for the 2022 tournament is to raise enough money to award at least five scholarships, according to information from the organization.

The tournament is scheduled for the Great Life Golf Course, 1800 S. Marymount Road. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided at approximately 1:30 p.m., with an awards program to follow at 2 p.m.

Early registration by March 20 is $300 per team. After March 20, the registration fee is $320.

There will be cash prizes for the top three teams: first place, $300; second place, $200; third place, $100. Additionally, there will be prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, and longest putt, ball toss and mulligans, and a 50/50 drawing.

For the past several years, the Kansas JCI Senate Foundation has worked to provide scholarships to high school seniors for college or trade school education. Criteria are based on academic performance as well as service to humanity in equal parts, according to information from the organization.

Salina police are investigating an incident in which a catalytic converter was cut off of a U.S. government-owned pickup.

Sometime between Jan. 12 and Thursday, someone cut a catalytic converter from a Ford F250 pickup belonging to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) while the pickup was parked in the lot at the USDA office, 760 S. Broadway Boulevard, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

The pickup was last used on Jan. 12 and the theft was discovered on Thursday.

Total loss was estimated at $1,200, according to Forrester.

Damage done to a piece of Saline County equipment was more costly than the item stolen from it.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department had been doing some work near the intersection of W. Stimmel Road and Tressin Road. Sometime between 3:20 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. Thursday, someone cut a battery out of a county-owned Bobcat 650 skid-steer that had been left at the location, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

The battery was valued at $300. Damage done to the Bobcat when the battery was cut out was estimated at $3,000, Soldan said.

Annette Hernandez, executive assistant to the CEO and dean of Kansas State University Salina, is retiring on March 29 after 35 years of service to the state of Kansas and the university. Hernandez began her career in Topeka with the state, then transferred to K-State to work in the College of Business Administration's management department on the Manhattan campus where she held numerous job titles. In 2005, Hernandez was ready for a new opportunity and began working in the engineering technology department on the Salina campus. In 2019, Hernandez was promoted to executive assistant to the campus's CEO and dean. Hernandez has served on several committees, both on the Salina and Manhattan campuses, and has served in the University Support Staff Senate for many years, including six years as treasurer. A 1984 graduate of Abilene High School, Hernandez earned an associate degree from Fort Hays State University in 1986. Her husband of 32 years is Bernie Hernandez and they have two children, Ashley and Heath. Hernandez said that she would miss working with all the administration, faculty and staff that she's known over the years but looks forward to this new chapter in her life.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Saturday, Feb. 19, Salina Police officers took several reports of a subject passing counterfeit bills at businesses in Salina. 

A total of seven businesses reported a female subject came into their businesses and passed a counterfeit $100 bill. Many of the businesses accepted the counterfeit bill(s) as legal tender. The subject was observed leaving some of the businesses in a vehicle, which was described as a silver four-door passenger car with an Arizona tag.

The subject was described as a white female between 20-30 years old, medium build with long dark hair.

As the designated representative of the deceased, executors are responsible for making sure the deceased’s assets are distributed according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/will-questions-answered" target="_blank">the will.</a>&nbsp;Executors deal with&nbsp;probate court, tell everyone who needs to know about the death, pay outstanding debt, distribute assets, and generally represent the deceased person whenever needed.

Think of someone you know who is trustworthy, conscientious and good at talking to people. This person also needs to be mature, capable of handling life events with a level head and have an honest heart. You need to think about where your potential&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/executor-of-will-checklist" target="_blank">executor</a>&nbsp;lives, too, because they could end up spending a lot of time working with the courts in your area. If you already have someone in mind who has all the right personal qualities, but lives out of state, research your state’s requirements for an executor’s location. Virtual meetings could be a possibility.

The amount of time needed for an executor to handle your affairs when you’re gone could be enormous. Depending on the complexity of your estate, it could take months—or even&nbsp;years. Once you settle on someone as executor, be honest with them about all the responsibilities that come with the job. What is the best way to invest a one-time lump sum of $2,500? My plan is to leave the money alone and let it grow for a long time.

McPherson County Health Department COVID-19 weekly update

Music has always been an integral part of the Kansas Wesleyan experience. Whether it has been Christmas by Candlelight, student-led singing groups, the Philharmonic Choir and its tours, or one of the many concerts provided, KWU is a place that embraces the heart of music. Now, the university will move one of its most beloved spaces into a new era.

The university has announced that phase two of the Power of AND campaign will include a $4.5 million music campaign. This will allow the university to renovate both departmental spaces and Sams Chapel, an effort that will include the construction of new faculty offices, practice rooms and both a lobby and entrance specific to the chapel itself.

“Sams Chapel has been the soul of the campus for more than 90 years,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, KWU president. “Virtually everyone who has come through campus since 1926 – when the chapel was dedicated – has memories of that space. By renovating the chapel, we will allow it to flourish for a new generation and to be a space for our community. We will do this while respecting its history, legacy and everything it means to our university.”

KWU has received more than $2 million toward its goal of $4.5 million for music. The university is more than halfway to its overall campaign goal of raising $26 million by June 2024.

In phase one, which began in June 2019, KWU greatly increased its overall number of scholarship opportunities, with a focus on nursing, fine arts, business, and the sciences. Included in those new opportunities were the Central Kansas and Ad Astra scholarships, which focused on students from Kansas and, more specifically, certain counties in the central part of the state. Thanks to the support of the Vanier family, a third opportunity – the Saline County scholarship – helped KWU invest in students from its home county.

The university’s endowment grew to $45 million, its largest mark ever, and capital improvements included the Nursing Education Center, KWU’s first new, on-campus education facility in 50 years. The university also invested in other capital improvements, including $500,000 in residence hall renovations, new labs, remodeled classroom spaces and energy-saving initiatives throughout campus. The total capital improvement investment exceeded $10 million during this time.

“The support we saw during phase one of this campaign has been fantastic,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of advancement and university operations. “Continued work throughout our campus will enable us to better serve students through improving both their practical and educational experiences. The music campaign is a tremendous example of that philosophy.”

The campaign ties in to KWU’s long-range strategic plan in numerous ways. That plan is based upon four principles: Integration, Stewardship, the Coyote (student) Experience and Holistic Academics. Each area is covered within phase two of the Power of AND campaign.

“As a faith-based institution, we are called to be good stewards of the gifts given to us,” said Oliver. “This campaign will insure that one of our crown jewels, Sams Chapel, will be strong for generations to come. It will provide a different type of energy to our campus life, increase community resources for the arts and improve KWU’s ties with Salina overall. We are also confident that the renovation and creation of new Music department spaces will provide practical experience for our students, thereby increasing our holistic academic environment.”

Second phase of KWU campaign to include Sams Chapel renovation

ALMA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly today announced 29 bridge projects across Kansas will receive more than $5 million as part of the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program (KLBIP). 

The KLBIP is a state-local partnership initiative that provides funds to replace or rehabilitate locally-owned deficient bridges to improve the Kansas infrastructure.

“My administration remains committed to improving the overall transportation system in our state – and that includes bridges in need of long-overdue repairs,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“By fostering partnerships among all levels of government, we can build the robust and responsive infrastructure system that keeps Kansans safe, our commerce flowing, and our economy continuously flourishing.”

The KLBIP is a state-local partnership initiative included in the Kelly Administration’s bipartisan, 10-year Eisenhower Transportation Legacy Program, or IKE. The Kelly administration reinstated KLBIP in 2019 to assist cities and counties by providing up to $150,000 toward the replacement or rehabilitation of a bridge on the local roadway system. For this recent round of KLBIP selections, a total of 62 applications were received with requests for $10.5 million in funds.

“These local bridges are the lifeblood of many communities. Most ag loads start in a field, are placed in a truck that then has to cross a county bridge to get to a state highway or rail line,”&nbsp;KDOT Secretary Lorenz said. “Congratulations to these Kansas communities for partnering with KDOT and securing local matching funds that keep critical bridges open to the public and moving commerce.”

There are approximately 19,300 bridges on Kansas’ local road systems. About 26% – or 5,000 – of those bridges are in poor condition or unable to meet today’s weight and vehicle requirements. The KLBIP targets bridges 20-50 feet in length and a daily vehicle count of less than 100. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Gov.: Area bridge projects among those receiving state funding

MITCHELL COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just after noon Thursday in Mitchell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Ford Focus driven by Larry Monroe Hicks, 68, Concordia, was westbound on Kansas 9 highway just east of 360 Road. The car traveled left of center and struck an eastbound 2019 Kenworth semi driven by Adam Lee Badger, 33, Mankato.

After impact, the semi entered the south ditch and overturned.

Hicks was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Robert's Family Funeral Home. Badger was not injured and not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Concordia man dies after crash with a semi

GYPSUM - A small earthquake shook part of Saline County early Tuesday morning.

The Kansas Geological Survey today reported that a 2.7 magnitude quake struck at 4:57 a.m. Tuesday southwest of Gypsum. The quake was centered just north of E. Hedberg Road between S. Whitmore Road and S. Niles Road.

Small quake shakes part of SE Saline County

The Salina Police Department this morning issued the following information concerning a shooting incident Wednesday night in north Salina.

On 02-23-2022 at approximately 9:28 PM, the Salina Police Department received information that Devon Wayne Dirksen, who had warrants for his arrest, was located at the Pump Mart, 1118 North 9th Street, Salina, Kansas. Salina Police Officer Michael Chandler was dispatched to that location and contacted Dirksen inside the business.

Dirksen resisted Officer Chandler’s efforts to arrest him, and a physical altercation ensued. Dirksen was able to break free from Officer Chandler and fled outside. Officer Chandler caught Dirksen across the street from the Pump Mart and tackled him to the ground. During the struggle on the ground, Dirksen pulled on Officer Chandler’s sidearm, and then Officer Chandler heard the sound of a gunshot. Dirksen was able to break free, and fled into a nearby residential area. Officer Chandler checked his handgun, and it was still secured in his holster.

With the assistance of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol, Dirksen was located hiding in the area and was taken into custody without further incident. A handgun was found in the area where Officer Chandler and Dirksen were struggling on the ground, and a gunshot was heard.

No one was injured by the gunfire, but Officer Chandler and Dirksen suffered minor injuries from the physical confrontation.
