Two people were injured in a multiple-vehicle rear-end collision in south Salina Tuesday afternoon.

A 2013 Jeep Wrangler driven by Savik Howard, 30, of Salina, was northbound on S. Ninth Street near the intersection with Otto Avenue when it struck the rear of a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Magda Rodriguez, 53, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The force of the collision sent the Traverse into the rear of a 2004 Cadillac DeVille driven by Margaret Dixon, 59, of Salina. Dixon's car then struck the rear of a 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Kirby Smith, 34, of Bennington, Forrester said.

The wreck occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Howard told police that his foot slipped off the brake as he attempted to stop the Wrangler.

Both Rodriguez and Dixon sustained minor injuries and were transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

All four vehicles sustained some damage but were able to be driven from the scene.

Howard was cited for following too closely, Forrester said.

Kansas Wesleyan University’s String Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will perform a joint concert on Thursday. 

The performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Sams Chapel and is open to the public at no charge.

The String Orchestra, under the direction of Leonardo Rosario, will perform an eclectic mix of music from noted 20th-century composers. Opening the concert will be a performance by two movements written for the motion picture Psycho, composed by Bernard Herrmann.

Aaron Copland’s ballet Rodeo will be featured next, with a performance of the hoedown from this piece set in the Wild West. Copland’s picturesque music – familiar to audiences from many television commercials and other media – will be a highlight of the concert.

The KWU Wind Ensemble, conducted by department chair James McAllister, will feature a selection of pieces that highlight both traditional and new music arrangements. John Philip Sousa’s march King Cotton will begin the program, followed by a transcription of the overture to Mozart’s comic opera The Impresario.

A beautifully lyric piece titled Sleep, by Eric Whitacre, will be followed by a selection of songs from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. Closing the concert will be the terrific First Suite in E-flat by British composer Gustav Holst.

KWU to host string orchestra, wind ensemble concert Thursday

History often repeats itself. This phrase used to seem like a cautionary warning but the last two years have transformed it to have a feeling more like a judgmental, “I told you so.” Events I had only read about in history books like a global pandemic, racial unrest as part of the fight for civil rights and the start of war in Europe are actually happening. Bad things happen in the world every day but this has felt heavier and closer. Six degrees of separation is a theory that any two people on earth can be connected to each other through the network connections of six or fewer people. This theory has been around since the 1920s and has shown up in pop culture as the subject of plays, movies and even a game featuring Kevin Bacon as the speculated most connected person in the entertainment industry. I have often thought that in the agriculture community we could cut the number of degrees in half. Maybe we are friendlier or there are just less of us, but I could give example after example of how small our world is and the interesting places I have meet people with whom I share a first or second social connection. For example, less than six months ago, I was traveling with Kansas Farm Bureau’s Casten Fellows program, learning about how farmers in the Baltic states have worked to build their businesses, infrastructure and knowledge over the last three decades after gaining independence from Russian occupation. Farmers we met on that trip have close family and friends who are in Ukraine and willing to fight for their freedom. That’s two degrees of separation for me. All of the people we met in the Baltics, who are thriving under their own sovereignty, know they will be a future target if the Ukraine falls to Russia. Then it would be just one degree of separation. That is why it feels so close. People I know or that know my connections are fighting a war. Not because they volunteered to help, but because invaders burst into their homes trying to rob them of their independence. Power, greed, hatred, disagreement and control are some of the most unfortunate motivators within human nature because they lead to separation, struggle and conflict. War is a dreadful and often repeated reality brought about by these motivators. With war just a degree or two away, the struggles and conflicts of our everyday lives seem to lessen a little in light of all the things we already have and the ways we universally alike. We all want to be safe, healthy, connected. War does none of these things but making new connections, sharing our lives and being good to each other reduces our degrees of separation and brings us all closer together. The world gets smaller and better with every connection we make. Hold your loved ones closer, reach out to friends and strangers to connect to the world around you, and continue to pray for the families in Ukraine and their connections all over the world.

INSIGHT: Degrees of separation

Today is Wednesday, March 2, the 61st day of 2022. There are 304 days left in the year. 

On March 2, 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors in a game against the New York Knicks, an NBA record that still stands. (Philadelphia won, 169-147.) 

In 1861, the state of Texas, having seceded from the Union, was admitted to the Confederacy.

In 1877, Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was declared the winner of the 1876 presidential election over Democrat Samuel J. Tilden, even though Tilden had won the popular vote. 

In 1917, actor, producer, director and bandleader Desi Arnaz was born in Santiago de Cuba.

In 1932, the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which moved the date of the presidential inauguration from March 4 to Jan. 20, was passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification.

The Senate confirmed retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry to be energy secretary.

One year ago: FBI Director Chris Wray told senators that the attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump was "domestic terrorism"; Wray warned of a rapidly growing threat of homegrown violent extremism. Thirteen people were killed when an SUV carrying 25 people collided with a semitruck on a California highway near the U.S.-Mexico border. (A Mexican man was charged with organizing a smuggling run in which the SUV drove through a hole in a border fence.) Texas became the biggest state to lift its mask rule, joining a growing movement to loosen COVID-19 restrictions despite pleas from health officials not to do so. The business responsible for preserving the legacy of children's author Dr. Seuss said six of his books would no longer be published because of racist and insensitive imagery. Bunny Wailer, the last surviving founding member of the legendary reggae group The Wailers, died in his native Jamaica at 73.

Salina USD 305 released the following statement this morning concerning a school library book that was challenged.

Salina Public Schools has determined a library book recently challenged, "All Boys Aren’t Blue," by George M. Johnson, will remain on the shelf.

In keeping with board policy, a building review committee was formed. They read the book and discussed potential strengths and weaknesses of the book as a literary work, along with the merits of retaining the book.

After consideration, the committee determined that the book should remain in the library. In its report, the committee determined that the district’s policy, procedures and philosophy were followed in the selection of this book.

The committee acknowledged that passages in the book describing sexual activity may be uncomfortable to read but do not detract from the value of the book. They noted that themes of the book could be affirming for students to recognize that they are not alone as they experience similar systemic challenges and societal prejudices. The book’s narrative is the perspective of an individual who intended to, “give a voice to so many from marginalized communities whose experiences have not yet been captured between the pages of a book.”

The district’s process to manage any challenges to textbooks and instructional materials is clear*. The first step is an informal process that is a meeting between the concerned individual, the school principal and the library media specialist.

In this instance, the school received a request for reconsideration of the book after that meeting.

In keeping with board policy, a building level review committee was formed to review the book as the first level of appeal. That committee included the principal, the library media specialist, two teachers and two citizens.

Salina USD 305 keeps challenged book in library

TOPEKA – Thirty-six projects have been selected for Kansas Airport Improvement Program (KAIP) funding for the purpose of planning, constructing or rehabilitating public use general aviation airports.

KAIP receives $5 million annually through the Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, known as IKE, and requires airport sponsors to share in the project costs by paying between 5% and 50% of the total project. The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation, which manages the program, considered 145 project applications this year with a combined total project value of over $78 million.

“The aviation industry brings $20.6 billion in total economic impact to the State of Kansas,” said KDOT Director of Aviation Bob Brock. “The KAIP program helps this important industry remain a vital part of the Kansas economy. That translates into jobs and quality of life for the residents of Kansas.”

KDOT: Area projects among those selected for airport funding

A desktop computer, monitor, and keyboard are missing after a business burglary in north Salina.

On Monday morning, an employee of Great Plains Manufacturing told police that when he arrived at work Monday, he found his office window shattered and his desktop computer, monitor, and keyboard missing, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The man's office is in Building 1, 601 Idlewilde Place.

Damage to the window was estimated at $400. Forrester said it is unknown what shattered the window.

The Dell computer, monitor, and keyboard were valued at $1,350, he said.

OCCK Transportation is announcing slight changes to the timed stops at both Casey’s and the courthouse in Belleville for 81 Connection, the fixed route bus service from Belleville to Salina, starting on Monday.

The Northbound Link No. 1 will arrive at the Belleville – courthouse stop at 11:30 a.m. before heading to the Belleville – Casey’s stop at 11:35 a.m.&nbsp;

The Northbound Link No. 2 will arrive at the Belleville – courthouse stop at 5:45 p.m. before heading to the Belleville – Casey’s stop at 5:50 p.m.&nbsp;

The Northbound Link No. 3 will arrive at the Belleville – courthouse stop at 3:21 p.m. before heading to the Belleville – Casey’s stop at 3:26 p.m.&nbsp; The Southbound Link No. 3 will not go back to the Belleville – Courthouse stop but will leave the Belleville – Casey’s stop at 3:41 p.m. and head south to Concordia.&nbsp;

All other stops and times will remain the same.&nbsp;

The 81 Connection bus service has three bi-directional trips each day, Monday through Friday. Police are looking for a black or dark-colored sedan with front-end damage after a hit-and-run collision in south Salina Monday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 58-year-old Salina man had been driving  southbound on S. Ninth Street in a 2008 Cadillac Escalade and was stopped at the light at the S. Ninth Street/Saturn Avenue intersection when his vehicle was rear-ended by a black or dark-colored sedan. The hit-and-run occurred at approximately 3 p.m. Monday.

The sedan then fled west on Saturn Avenue. The man attempted to follow the sedan, but eventually lost sight of it, Forrester said.

The Escalade received rear-end damage, but was still operable.

It's almost time to find out which works won the SculptureTour Salina's People's Choice Awards. 

Announcement of the annual awards is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday in front of The Hoffman Building (formerly UMB), at Santa Fe Avenue and Iron Avenue. The SculptureTour Salina Committee hopes to have plans finalized so that the permanent location of the winning sculpture also can be announced.

“We are so excited to announce the People Choice winner for 2021. This is personally my favorite part of the SculptureTour Salina experience. I love that everyone can vote, express themselves, and be part of the choice!” said Sylvia Rice, SculptureTour Salina Committee member and Visit Salina director for the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

The winners of the Merit Award and Kids Choice Award also are scheduled to be announced at the Thursday event.

Each year, the City of Salina designates $15,000 toward the purchase of the People’s Choice winner. The sculpture is then installed in a public environment within the community.

“SculptureTour Salina is entering its 12th year and we are pleased with the artwork that has been chosen to be here on loan for the 2022 exhibit,” said Mike Hoppock, SculptureTour Salina Committee Chair and city commissioner. “We invite everyone to come out and help us celebrate UNwrapping those sculptures on Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m. Jurors’ prizes will be awarded at 1 p.m. – all in the 67401 Plaza. SculptureTour Salina People's Choice awards to be announced

No matter who you are or what industry you’re in, it’s important to set goals for your career. Career goals keep us moving forward, prevent us from getting stuck or stagnant, and give us something bigger than ourselves to work toward.&nbsp;

Career goals are short, simple statements that describe how you plan to grow and move forward in your career. They act as a measure of what you plan to achieve—kind of like a promise to yourself. And the great thing about goals is&nbsp;you&nbsp;call the shots.&nbsp;You&nbsp;get to decide what you want your future to look like, then work toward making that vision a reality.&nbsp;

You might already have an idea of what you want your career to look like long term. Or, you might have no idea where you want to go in your career. That’s okay. The goal-setting process can help you figure it out. If the idea of setting big goals seems overwhelming, but don’t let it stress you out. You can break down them down into more achievable tasks.

Ideally, your short-term career goals will help you work toward your big-picture, long-term goals. But even if you don’t know what those are yet, you can still set great short-term goals that help move your career forward. Here are a few examples:

●Get a paycheck&nbsp;-&nbsp;I’m not kidding. Sometimes simply having some form of income is our number one goal, and that’s okay.&nbsp;

Maybe you&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/how-to-quit-job-professionally" target="_blank">quit your job</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/what-to-do-if-you-get-laid-off" target="_blank">got laid off</a>&nbsp;or you&nbsp;just need to make ends meet. Do what’s necessary to provide for yourself and your family. Once your situation is more stable, you’ll be able to think more about where you really want your career to go.

●Clarify what you want to do long term&nbsp;-&nbsp;Maybe it’s time to make a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/changing-careers-midlife" target="_blank">midlife career change</a>, or maybe it’s time to figure out your career direction for the first time ever. Once you’re clear on your passions, talents and professional mission, you can find your career sweet spot and start looking for options in that field.

●Education, training and certifications&nbsp;-&nbsp;Sometimes you need certain qualifications before pursuing your ideal career field. Your goal might be going back to school for your MBA, completing a coding bootcamp or anything else that increases your career experience and hiring potential.

●Connect to people and places&nbsp;-&nbsp;Making genuine connections is an easy short-term goal that can pay off in the long run. You can find plenty of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/how-to-network-the-right-way" target="_blank">ways to network</a>, even if it’s just by getting to know people at church or volunteering for a company that interests you.

●Start on a path toward your dream job&nbsp;-&nbsp;A goal of yours could be to get a job that puts you directly on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/how-to-get-your-dream-job" target="_blank">path to your dream</a>. This might come in the form of a side hustle, part-time job, or entry-level job. But at least it will get you in the door.

●Get promoted&nbsp;–&nbsp;A promotion (along with a pay raise) is an awesome goal. Depending on where you work, this could become a longer-term goal. If it’s early in your career, and you’re really crushing it at a great company, promotions will ideally happen every two to three years.

There are all kinds of long-term career goals. It all depends on what you want your career to look like. Here are a few common examples to get you started:

●Find your dream job&nbsp;-&nbsp;This is a goal that could take many years to achieve, but if you’re willing to do what it takes, getting your dream job is possible. If you’ve been working toward this by doing some of the short-term goals mentioned above, you’re already well on your way.

●Be a leader&nbsp;-&nbsp;You don’t&nbsp;have&nbsp;to be in leadership to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/business/how-to-be-a-great-leader" target="_blank">be a great leader</a>, but you might want to make it a goal to lead a big project or a team. Leading isn’t for everyone, but if you’re willing to put in the hard work and approach it with a servant’s heart, you might surprise yourself.

●Be impactful&nbsp;-&nbsp;So many of us don’t want to spend our whole lives just working a J-O-B. We want to know that our work really makes a difference. Whatever that difference is for you, be sure to define it as a concrete goal so you can work toward it.

●Leave a legacy&nbsp;-&nbsp;This goes hand in hand with making an impact. Think about what you want to be able to give to future generations, whether that’s a legacy of great leadership, a book you’ve written, or a financial inheritance that you can leave for your kids and grandkids. All this can happen because of the career goals you set.

There’s a lot of persistence and patience required, regardless of how big or small the goal. Sometimes it’s hard to find the balance of going after it and making things happen, while also being patient and waiting for the result of your hard work to pay off. But all those things build character.

We want to know that our work really makes a difference. WICHITA – AAA Kansas announced today that 35 law enforcement agencies, comprising 26 police departments and nine sheriff’s offices, are receiving AAA Kansas Community Traffic Safety Awards for their 2021 work to keep roadways in their cities and counties safe through a variety of initiatives and programs.

The awards have been presented annually since 2011 by AAA Kansas to community law enforcement agencies for their efforts to successfully and cost-effectively foster and improve local traffic safety. The agencies are scored and recognized for their efforts in multiple categories, including education, emergency medical response, enforcement, and traffic engineering collaborations and solutions.

“AAA Kansas salutes these 35 dedicated law enforcement partners for their commitment, hard work and, in many cases, creative community engagement, in delivering effective and successful traffic safety programs. Our roadways are safer because of them,” said Shawn Steward, public and government affairs manager for AAA Kansas. “Our police departments and sheriff’s offices in Kansas do an excellent job of keeping motorists, cyclists and pedestrians safe in their communities.”

The honored law enforcement agencies will be recognized by AAA Kansas with award plaques being presented to the police chiefs and sheriffs in their communities in the coming weeks and months. The recognized agencies and their 2021 award levels are as follows.
