A local man was injured when his car was rear-ended by a pickup in south Salina Friday morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Christopher Field, 48, of Salina, was turning his 2017 Hyundai Elantra into the parking lot of the Rodeway Inn, 3932 S. Ninth Street, when the car was rear-ended by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 17-year-old Assaria boy.

Field was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

The boy was cited for following too closely, Forrester said.

SPD: Shots fired early Saturday in SW Salina not related to homicide

A security supervisor got a sudsy surprise when he arrived for work at Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday.

The supervisor told police that when he arrived at work, he discovered that the fountain in front of Pioneer Hall was full of soap bubbles.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that surveillance video shows three males wearing hoodies dumping soap into the fountain at 3:40 a.m. Saturday. One of the males was wearing a gray hoodie and the other two were wearing black hoodies.

Preliminary damage is estimated at $2,000, however, that amount may rise should Kansas Wesleyan need to replace the pump system, Forrester said.

For Celine&nbsp;Wetiba, it’s all about the adventure — trying new things, learning about different cultures and being involved.

But when the graduating biomedical chemistry major took stock of her senior year at Kansas Wesleyan University, she realized she hadn’t gotten the full college experience: She was missing out on athletics. At that point, she joined the dance team to become a student-athlete.

This was in addition to being an RA and president of the Coyote Activities Board, both for two years; being fundraising chair for the campus Multicultural Student Union; working three days a week at United Radiology; volunteering in the children’s ministry at her church, The Ark; and babysitting occasionally.

She completed her demanding major in three years and hopes, after a gap year, to go to medical school. In short, she’s been a tremendous example of The Power of AND.

“I love to be involved,”&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;said. “It’s so easy to be involved here (at KWU).

“Anything I find interest in I try to dive into with an open mind, just to see if I like it. Most of the time I do. It’s hard not to be involved, at least for me.”

She feels as if she missed out on a lot her first year. She came to KWU on an Eisenhower Scholarship, so she didn’t have to participate in sports or music, and she felt like something was missing. Then COVID-19 hit in March 2020 and the campus shut down for the rest of the academic year.

“These past two years, I wanted to take it all in!” she said, of college life. “I didn’t get to experience this, and I’m already one year short because I’m graduating early.”

She decided she didn’t want to miss out on anything in her college career.

“The school gives you the opportunity to [participate in many things],”&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;said. “I said I could put my mind to it, and I did it.”

With all she’s involved in, balancing her classes and activities can be difficult.

“You can’t catch a break, but that’s OK because this is what I wanted to do,” she said. “So you just have to do it.”

Like deciding to graduate in three years.

She was fortunate, she said, that Goddard High School (where she went) offered dual credits, so she came to KWU with a head start.

Her family lives in west Wichita, but they came to the U.S. about 12 years ago from Kenya, where&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;was born.

Her goal is to exceed not just her own expectations, but her family’s expectations for her.

“I just really want to be able to make my family proud, especially since my mom and dad did so much for me to be able to be here,” she said. “I get emotional, thinking about it.”

Her freshman year, she went to a Multicultural Student Union meeting and there were “like four students,” she said.

Now the MCSU has 30-plus active students, said Dr. Allen Smith, director of diversity and student success.

“We couldn’t have done it without [Celine],” Smith said. “Her personality draws young people to her. She is a natural leader; people follow her. Most of all, she leads by example.”

Hailey Vandevanter, student activities coordinator and resident director, agreed.

“She’s always served as a leader and as a role model for younger students,” she said.

For&nbsp;Wetiba’s gap year, she plans to stay in Salina, volunteer at her church, work, study for the MCATs she’ll take this summer and figure out how to keep in touch with friends, some of whom will move across the country.

She intends to go to medical school in 2023, specializing in family practice and pediatrics.

Holding a CNA license since she was 16 and working at United Radiology,&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;has some experience already in the medical field.

“I feel like there’s so much more opportunity for me here, especially with the connections I’ve already made in the Salina community.”&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;said. “I want to take advantage of those opportunities as much as I can to maximize my efforts going into med school. Going back home would be like starting over.”

It’s important for her to give back, both to her parents and to KWU.

She said she’s proud she’ll be an alumna and plans to become involved with the Alumni Association.

“Kansas Wesleyan has honestly done so much for me,”&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;said. “At a bigger school I couldn’t do as much as I’ve done or be in the positions I’m in.”

She doesn’t feel as if she’s missed out on anything.

KWU: Wetiba to Graduate as Shining Example of The Power of AND

Between 1980 and 1996, natural science publications in Russian fell from 10.8 to 2.1 percent. German dropped from 2.5 to 1.2 percent. But English rose from 74.6 to 90.7 percent. This surge in English publications did not come from American authors or other native speakers of English. This increase came from “non-native Anglophones”—scientists who learned English as a second language.

Further data and the reasons for the rise of English as the “lingua franca” of science are available in&nbsp; two well-researched books: “Scientific Babel: How Science Was Done Before and After Global English” by Michael D. Gordon in 2015 and “Does Science Need a Global Language?: English and the Future of Research” by Scott L. Montgomery in 2013.

American readers might want to believe the adoption of English is due to U.S. superiority. But both authors clearly show how English has its dominant status because of economic factors and current history, not any cultural superiority. The percentage of science publications by American researchers has actually declined in recent years. &nbsp;

English is a rather difficult language, often not following rules of grammar and pronunciation. And there are many “World Englishes” with variations from England to America to India and Pakistan to Africa and Australia. —Thus “color” versus “colour” and endings of “-ising” or “-izing” etc.

A major driver of changing languages in science was warfare. German was a major world language in the physical sciences in the late 1800s. But after both World Wars, German scientists and the German language was shunned. Those German scientists who fled wartime Europe learned the language of their adopted country and most published in English. This issue arises again today. Teams of scientists around the world are constantly working together to solve complex problems. But some in the world science community are now discussing whether they can or should cooperate with Russian scientists.

Meanwhile, American viewers of television news should notice that interviews with Ukrainians find some speak quite good English. And it is obvious that many also speak both Ukrainian and Russian. Indeed, fully half of the population of European Union countries speak two or more languages. This is also the case in much of the less-developed world, where folks in India usually speak their local Hindi, Tamil or Bengali in addition to learning the India dialect of British English in school. &nbsp;

It is Americans who generally speak only one language. Of the seven percent of Americans who speak a second language, many are recent immigrants.&nbsp; But since most science publishing is now in English worldwide, why learn a second language? The answer is simple, but hard to explain to a person who only speaks one language and therefore thinks that all people in the world “think alike.” Simply, different languages break the world into slightly different terms and therefore mental concepts. For instance, our word “rights” translates into “responsibility” and our word “individualism” translates into “selfishness”—in Chinese. &nbsp;

One shortcoming of these two books is that they do not describe the major switch in China in the 1980s, from studying Russian as a second language to studying English. Today, if every person in the U.S. studied Chinese, we could not match the number of Chinese who have studied English beginning in elementary school. This provides them with a massive advantage not only in international commerce but also is one of several reasons they surpassed the U.S. in numbers of STEM doctorates in 2007 and in published science research articles in 2017.

Americans are particularly gullible when it comes to computer claims. We expect machine translation to take care of translation for us. Both authors dismiss this excuse. Gordon notes that in 1958, philosopher Bar-Hillel who had convened the first machine translation conference at MIT finally came to the conclusion that “‘...fully automatic, high-quality translation,’ the stated goal of most research programs, was impossible, ‘not only in the near future but altogether.” This was due to communication being more than algorithmic rules but relying on semantics, the requirement for experiences to provide meaning. Thus “‘perfect’ translation is neither humanly nor mechanically achievable....”&nbsp;&nbsp;

NWS warns of first heatwave of the year this week

The 2023 budget, air service update, a bid award, and an EMS Week proclamation are among the items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

Study sessions and city commission meetings will take place in–person in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street, and via Zoom until further notice. Meetings also can be viewed at the City of Salina YouTube channel,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/cityofSalinaKansas">https://www.youtube.com/cityofSalinaKansas</a>.

Commissioners are scheduled to hear an update from Tim Rogers, Salina Airport Authority executive director, concerning air service to the Salina Regional Airport. On March 10, SkyWest Airlines filed a 90-day notice of intent to terminate its Essential Air Service contract at Salina. The major reason for the shutdown was a nationwide shortage of pilots.

The U.S. Department of Transportation responded with a hold-in order, requiring SkyWest to continue operations until a replacement air carrier “begins full Essential Air Service.” A reasonable expectation, according to the USDOT, would be to start full service by at least Dec. 31.

Then, in early April, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the extension from April 11 to May 11 the deadline for air carrier proposals to replace SkyWest Airlines.

Other items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday include the following.

●Consider a request to recognize the week of May 15-21 as Emergency Medical Services Week in the City of Salina. Fire Chief Tony Sneidar is scheduled to read the proclamation.

●Conduct a public hearing and then consider approving resolutions declaring structures at 244 E. Diamond Drive, 615 S. Ninth Street, and 619 S. Santa Fe Avenue, to be unsafe or dangerous and directing that the structures be repaired or removed and the premises be made safe and secure.

●Consider awarding a bid for the city's 2022 Minor Concrete-Pavement Repair 3 project for $129,248 with a $6,462.40 (five percent) construction contingency to Davis Concrete Construction of Salina, and authorize the city manager to execute a contract with the company upon fulfillment of all prerequisites under the bid documents.

●Consider approving on second reading a proposed charter ordinance exempting the City of Salna from the provisions of K.S.A. 13-1024a and providing for substitute and additional provisions on the same subject relating to general improvements and the issuance of bonds for the purpose of paying for said improvements and repealing Charter Ordinance No. 39.

●Consider approving on first reading a proposed ordinance that would approve an amended PC-5 (planned service commercial) district on a 44-acre tract of land located on the west side of S. Ninth Street north of W. Water Well Road.

●Consider accepting an offered easement and restricted access dedications from McArthur Enterprises, Ltd., and the Stephen and Stacey Marshall Trust No. 1 to serve Long-McArthur Addition No. 3, a seven-lot subdivision of a 44.16 acre tract of land located on the west side of S. Ninth Street north of W. Water Well Road.

Salina commissioners to hear air service update Monday

Kansas Wesleyan has announced a new scholarship, one focused on Salina’s rich fine arts heritage. The Stein Strings Scholarship will offer new KWU students, coming to Kansas Wesleyan from Saline County schools, a guarantee of at least $20,000 per year in scholarship aid.

The scholarship honors the late Eric Stein, who founded the Salina Symphony and was a longtime instructor at Marymount College. It is KWU’s second announcement this semester that honors Stein’s legacy in Salina, following the inaugural Salina Strings Day in February, when two of his son, Rudolph and Edmund, performed alongside KWU students, area high school students and Leonardo Rosario, KWU’s director of strings.

“We’re excited to honor the Stein legacy with this scholarship opportunity,” said James McAllister, Music Department chair. “We hope it helps deepen the great legacy of strings players, both in Saline County and at Kansas Wesleyan.”

TOPEKA – The Kansas State High School Activities Association has announced the 34 students selected for a $2,000 scholarship made payable to a two-year or four-year accredited college, university or technical school in the name of the selected student. "Kansas schools are filled with outstanding students who excel in the classroom, in competition and performance, and in the community" said Executive Director Bill Faflick. "Having the opportunity to recognize students from across the state for the first time in association history is an honor. We are pleased to partner with the Capitol Federal Foundation ® to honor these outstanding students as they graduate and pursue continued excellence in their postsecondary endeavors." The 34 recipients are:&nbsp;&nbsp;

In this initial year, 590 applications were received across the 34 different scholarships.

Eligibility Students must be seniors attending and graduating from a member school of the Kansas State High School Ac­tivities Association during the 2021-22 school year and have rostered in the activity chosen below their senior year. They must be considered as students in good standing as confirmed by their building principal. Students must enroll and attend a post-secondary institution of their choice as a full-time student within two years of graduation of graduation. Applicants must be in their final semester of high school.

Selection Criteria The student were selected based upon an assessment of the following components:

Community Service (30%) Academic achievement (30%) Activity achievement (15%) Breadth of school activity participation (10%) Financial need (15%)

Applications were reviewed by a panel of educators and stakeholders who support the mission of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.&nbsp;

Area students among KSHSAA True Blue ® Scholars

Imagine a classroom with a teacher at the whiteboard and students at their work stations, joined by mobile robots through which additional students can participate in the class from another school miles away.&nbsp;

Robots in the classroom?&nbsp;&nbsp;Is this a futuristic movie?&nbsp;

No, it is happening right now, in schools in rural Kansas.&nbsp;

Pam Irwin is superintendent of USD 240, which serves the communities of Bennington and Tescott. Each community has a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade center. Pam is a native of Hays with four degrees from Fort Hays State and 29 years of education experience. She works with Anissa Bigler, a Council Grove native who is a K-State grad and now teaching in USD 240.&nbsp;

Pam became school superintendent in July 2020. The school board charged her with expanding the educational offerings for students in the district.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Rural Education Center in Kansas State University’s College of Education had successfully applied for two federal distance learning technology grants that would fund and deploy what were called “telepresence robots” in rural schools. Spencer Clark, director of the Rural Education Center, said there were 29 Kansas sites receiving the robots, two of which were in USD 240.&nbsp;

What is a telepresence robot? It is essentially an Ipad on motorized wheels that can be controlled remotely, allowing an online student to have a mobile, virtual presence in the classroom without being physically present.&nbsp;

Unlike a stationary camera or computer, the student can direct the robot to move so as to see a lesson somewhere in a classroom or to join a small group discussion or group project.&nbsp;

In USD 240, Pam Irwin approached high school English teacher Anissa Bigler about trying this technology in her classroom. Now students at Tescott High School can join Bigler’s class in Bennington through the robots.&nbsp;

When class begins, the Tescott students log on to their laptops at the school and connect to the robot in Mrs. Bigler’s classroom. “I start teaching my lesson at the whiteboard and I call on them or they volunteer answers, just as if they were in my classroom,” Bigler said. When the teacher moves through the room, the robot can also move, come closer to see the whiteboard, or join a discussion group.&nbsp;

“I think a huge benefit is that it doesn’t tie the teacher to the front of the room like a Zoom call does,” Irwin said.&nbsp;

“Allowing the students access to each other is my favorite thing about this,” Bigler said.&nbsp;

As with many new technologies, there was a challenging learning curve at first. Now the benefits are being realized. &nbsp;

What type of grade would Bigler give to the robot system? “Last fall I might have given it a C minus, but now it is almost to the A range,” she said. “It has so much potential.”&nbsp;

On one of the first days, the students connected to the wrong robots, which were then sent roaming the school hallways until they figured it out. In order to solve this problem, they have now identified each robot using names from the old television show, the Jetsons. The robots are named Astro, Elwood, Jetson, and so forth.&nbsp;

Irwin feels strongly that students in rural schools or smaller schools shouldn’t be penalized by distance. “All kids should have the same opportunities and we hope this will expand our students’ access to educational offerings,” she said.&nbsp;

“There are many advantages to the robots,” one student said.&nbsp;

“It makes it a lot easier to do group work and projects,” said another student.&nbsp;

“I feel more connected to the class,” said student Raven Peterson.&nbsp;

There are robots in the classroom, but this isn’t Star Trek. It is an innovative school in rural Kansas. We commend Pam Irwin, Anissa Bigler, and especially the students who are making a difference by pioneering this technology.&nbsp;

In these schools, the future is now.&nbsp;

 </figure>By RON WILSON Kansas State UniversityImagine a classroom with a teacher at the whiteboard and students at their work stations, joined by mobile robots through which additional students can participate in the class from another school miles away.&nbsp;Robots in the classroom?&nbsp;&nbsp;Is this a futuristic movie?&nbsp;No, it is happening right now, in schools in rural Kansas.&nbsp;Pam Irwin is superintendent of USD 240, which serves the communities of Bennington and Tescott. Each community has a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade center. Pam is a native of Hays with four degrees from Fort Hays State and 29 years of education experience. She works with Anissa Bigler, a Council Grove native who is a K-State grad and now teaching in USD 240.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Pam became school superintendent in July 2020. The school board charged her with expanding the educational offerings for students in the district.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the Rural Education Center in Kansas State University’s College of Education had successfully applied for two federal distance learning technology grants that would fund and deploy what were called “telepresence robots” in rural schools. Spencer Clark, director of the Rural Education Center, said there were 29 Kansas sites receiving the robots, two of which were in USD 240.&nbsp;What is a telepresence robot? It is essentially an Ipad on motorized wheels that can be controlled remotely, allowing an online student to have a mobile, virtual presence in the classroom without being physically present.&nbsp;Unlike a stationary camera or computer, the student can direct the robot to move so as to see a lesson somewhere in a classroom or to join a small group discussion or group project.&nbsp;In USD 240, Pam Irwin approached high school English teacher Anissa Bigler about trying this technology in her classroom. Now students at Tescott High School can join Bigler’s class in Bennington through the robots.&nbsp;When class begins, the Tescott students log on to their laptops at the school and connect to the robot in Mrs. Bigler’s classroom. “I start teaching my lesson at the whiteboard and I call on them or they volunteer answers, just as if they were in my classroom,” Bigler said. When the teacher moves through the room, the robot can also move, come closer to see the whiteboard, or join a discussion group.&nbsp;“I think a huge benefit is that it doesn’t tie the teacher to the front of the room like a Zoom call does,” Irwin said.&nbsp;“Allowing the students access to each other is my favorite thing about this,” Bigler said.&nbsp;As with many new technologies, there was a challenging learning curve at first. Now the benefits are being realized. &nbsp;What type of grade would Bigler give to the robot system? “Last fall I might have given it a C minus, but now it is almost to the A range,” she said. “It has so much potential.”&nbsp;On one of the first days, the students connected to the wrong robots, which were then sent roaming the school hallways until they figured it out. In order to solve this problem, they have now identified each robot using names from the old television show, the Jetsons. The robots are named Astro, Elwood, Jetson, and so forth.&nbsp;Irwin feels strongly that students in rural schools or smaller schools shouldn’t be penalized by distance. “All kids should have the same opportunities and we hope this will expand our students’ access to educational offerings,” she said.&nbsp;What do students think?&nbsp;“There are many advantages to the robots,” one student said.&nbsp;“It makes it a lot easier to do group work and projects,” said another student.&nbsp;“I feel more connected to the class,” said student Raven Peterson.&nbsp;How remarkable to find this innovative technology in schools in rural communities such as Bennington, population 622, and Tescott, population 265 people.
