The first Salina Crossroads Marathon, Half Marathon, Family Fun Run/Walk, and Team Relays is in the books and it was a success!

The qualifier for the Boston Marathon had 817 runners from 30 states registered.

“We had an amazing event this year and we are looking forward to continuing to grow the Salina Crossroads Marathon into one of the premier running events in Kansas," said Daniel Craig, co-race director.

The inaugural event got off to a chilly start in downtown Salina, with temperatures in the upper 30s.

At 7:55 a.m., an electric guitar performance of the National Anthem by Howard Mahan opened the festivities. At 8 a.m., the marathon, half marathon, and team relay runners were off, with the 4.01K Family Fun Run/Walk participants joining in at 8:10 a.m.

Following are the winners, as announced by the Salina Crossroads organizers.

Kory Cool from Manhattan was the winner of the men’s marathon in a time of 2:38:39.

Christina Marin from Norwood, Mass., won the women’s marathon in 3:17:35.

Multiple time Olympic Trials Qualifier Joe Moore won the men's half marathon with a time of 1:10:30.

Tamra Thompson from won the women’s half marathon in 1:32:21.

The Salina Running Club was the winner of the marathon relay.

3 Eagles from Silver Lake won the half marathon team relay.

Liam Young from Salina won the men’s 4.01K in 13:04

Regan Duran from Salina won the women’s 4.01K in 16:00.

More than 125 volunteers helped at registration, handed out water, Gatorade, and nutrition at aid stations, and served as course monitors.

“The volunteers did an amazing job. We received many great complements from runners on how smoothly the race went," Craig said.

WICHITA – With the end of Daylight Saving Time Sunday, Kansas motorists need to prepare for related changes during their commutes. AAA warns motorists to be prepared for sun glare during their morning commute and for earlier darkness and reduced visibility on the road during their evening commute.

“Ninety percent of drivers’ reaction time is dependent upon their vision,&nbsp;which is severely limited at night,” said AAA Kansas spokesman Shawn Steward. “Motorists should focus on night driving safety measures the moment the sun sets. It’s one of the most challenging times to drive because motorist’s eyes are frequently adjusting to the increasing darkness.”

AAA recommends wearing&nbsp;high-quality sunglasses and adjusting the car’s sun visors as needed. Late afternoon driving also presents a similar glare problem, so drivers should take the same precautions. Use of the night setting on rearview mirrors can reduce glare from headlights approaching from the rear.

The time change can&nbsp;disturbed sleep patterns, and when combined with the earlier dusk and darkness during the evening commute, become a formula for drowsy driving and fatigue-related crashes.

Sleep-deprived drivers cause traffic crashes that can lead to death and debilitating injuries on American roadways each year.&nbsp;Research by the AAA Foundation estimates that drowsy driving is a factor in an average of 328,000 crashes annually, including 109,000 crashes that result in injuries and 6,400 fatal crashes.

“While many will enjoy an extra hour of sleep this weekend, few commuters and motorists realize the added dangers that can come as the result of a time change – especially when they are behind the wheel,” continued AAA Kansas’ Steward. “Although we gain an hour of sleep, our sleep patterns are disrupted. This can result in drowsy driving episodes and it is unsafe to drive when we are feeling sleepy.”

Symptoms of drowsy driving can include having trouble keeping eyes open, drifting from lanes or not remembering the last few miles driven. However, more than half of drivers involved in fatigue-related crashes experienced no symptoms before falling asleep behind the wheel.

Motorists are also urged to be more cautious of deer sightings and crashes. November and December are among the most dangerous months of the year for motor vehicle collisions with animals. A collision with a deer or other animal can put a serious dent in your vehicle, if not destroy it completely, and could result in serious injuries or fatalities.

●Get plenty of rest before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.&nbsp;If you do begin to feel drowsy while driving, pull over immediately and rest or call a family members, friend or 911 for assistance.

●Reduce speed and increase following distances. Turn on your headlights to become more visible during early morning and evening hours.

●Keep vehicle headlights and windows (inside and out) clean.

●Do not use high beams when other cars or pedestrians are around.

●Yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks and do not pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks.

●Cross only at intersections. Look left, right and left again and only cross when it is clear. Do not jaywalk.

●Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks. If you have to walk on a road that does not have sidewalks, walk facing traffic.

●Evaluate the distance and speed of oncoming traffic before you step out into the street.

●Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking or biking near traffic at night. Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark.

●Avoid distracted walking. This includes looking at your phone or listening to music. If you must listen to music, make sure it is at a low volume so you can hear danger approaching.

●Bicycle lights are a ‘must have’ item for safe night riding, especially during the winter months when it gets dark earlier.

AAA tips to help prevent a crash or to reduce damage from an animal collision:

●Pay attention to road signs.&nbsp;Yellow, diamond-shaped signs with an image of a deer indicate areas with high levels of deer activity.

●Keep your eyes moving back and forth.&nbsp;Continuously sweep your eyes across the road in front of you for signs of animals and movement. Animals may also be alongside the road, so make sure to look to the right and left, as well. While the most likely crash is you hitting an animal, on occasion they might also hit you by running into the side of your car.

●Be especially attentive in early morning and evening hours.&nbsp;Many animals, especially deer, are most active from 5-8 a.m. and 5-8 p.m. – prime commuting times for many people.

●Use high beams when there’s no oncoming traffic.&nbsp;You can spot animals sooner. Sometimes the light reflecting off their eyes will reveal their location.

●Slow down, and watch for other deer to appear.&nbsp;Deer rarely travel alone, so if you see one, there are likely to be more nearby.

●Slow down around curves.&nbsp;It’s harder to spot animals when going around curves.

●One long blast.&nbsp;A long blast on your horn may frighten animals away from your vehicle.

●Resist the urge to swerve: Instead, stay in your lane with both hands firmly on the wheel.&nbsp;Swerving away from animals can confuse them so they don’t know which way to run. It can also put you in the path of oncoming vehicles or cause you to crash into something like a lamppost or a tree.

●If the crash is imminent take your foot off the brake:&nbsp;during hard braking the front end of your vehicle is pulled downward which can cause the animal to travel up over the hood towards your windshield. Letting off the brake can protect drivers from windshield strikes because the animal is more likely to be pushed to one side of the vehicle or over the top of the vehicle.

●Always wear a seatbelt.&nbsp;The chances of getting injured when hitting an animal are much higher if you don’t have your seatbelt on.

Time change: Different commute Monday, warns AAA

Monday through Friday, Circle C Construction of Goddard is scheduled to seal cracks on the following streets, weather permitting.

The work will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost- effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

This $288,000 project is part of the City's $4.7 million 2022 street maintenance program.

Saline County election: What you need to know

LINDSBORG — Incubators, plastic hospital bassinets, and a singular rocking chair — that is a scene most mothers of premature babies are all too familiar with. In the United States, 1 in every 10 babies is born premature. 

Vaiden Allbright from&nbsp;Assaria, is honoring her children, who were premature, and creating awareness by hosting a Fight like a Preemie 5k Walk/Run on Nov. 12 at the&nbsp;Valkommen&nbsp;Trail in Lindsborg.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Both of my babies were born early and my daughter was born at 33 weeks and 6 days," Allbright said. "She's healthy, strong and doing good now."&nbsp;

Brecken Robert, Allbright's son,&nbsp;was born on Sept. 11, 2021, 33 weeks and six days premature at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We spent probably a month at Wesley in the NICU with my son," Allbright said. "Then we got out and he was home for about a month and then went back for a couple days because he had Influenza A and Rhino virus. On the 26th&nbsp;of November we took him to the ER here in Salina because he was having apneic spells and he would stop breathing."&nbsp;

Brecken passed away Dec. 14,&nbsp;2021, due to complications relating to SIDS. The Fight like a Preemie 5k is in his honor.&nbsp;

Fighting like a Preemie 5k: Ronald McDonald House Charities

Registration for the Fight Like a Preemie 5k starts at 8:15 a.m. on Nov. 12 at the&nbsp;Valkommen&nbsp;Trail in Lindsborg, Kansas. There will be a $19 registration fee. All proceeds will go to The Ronald McDonald House Charities.&nbsp;

While the organization does not&nbsp;administer medical care, Ronald McDonald House does keep millions of children and families close to the critical care they need - and to each other.&nbsp;

"Ronald McDonald House says that it costs $100 to put a family in a room and feed them for one night," Allbright said. "If I can do that times 10, that is 10 nights for a single family to stay there."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Vaiden and her husband spent a month at the Ronald McDonald House while their son received treatment at Wesley.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"As someone who has stayed in a Ronald McDonald House, and seeing how hard they work to keep all those families as happy as they can—it's definitely a good charity," Allbright said. "You can go on their website and donate, right now from your account if you wanted to."

Fight Like a Preemie 5k to honor, raise awareness for babies born premature 

More than 800 runners from 30 states have signed up to run the Salina Crossroads Marathon, Half Marathon, Team Relays and 4.01K Family Fun Run on Saturday in downtown Salina and race organizers anticipate those number will increase. 

“We are excited to announce that multiple time Olympic Trials Qualifier and Kansas 5K and half marathon road race state record holder Joe Moore is running the half marathon. He has had a tremendous professional running career and it will be a great opportunity for the community to get to watch a runner of his caliber. We are excited to see how fast he runs on the flat and fast Salina Crossroads course," said Co-Race Director Daniel Craig. 

“We also have some high school runners in Saline County who have just finished up successful cross-country seasons and are signed up to run in different events on Nov. 5. We want to congratulate all of our local cross-country runners on an amazing season and we are looking forward to having some of them run Salina Crossroads” Craig said. “We have heard a lot of runners are using Salina Crossroads as their first race which we are very excited about. And we have one runner who has completed over 400 marathons. So regardless of whether someone is new to running or is an experienced runner we hope that Salina Crossroads will be a fun event that everyone can enjoy.”

Here are some fun facts about the Salina Crossroads Marathon weekend:

1. The Salina Crossroads Marathon weekend will kick off at 7:55 a.m. with an electric guitar version of the National Anthem. The marathon, half marathon, and team relays will start at 8 a.m. and the 4.01K Family Fun Run will start at 8:10 a.m.

2. The largest event is the half marathon with 316 runners registered.

3. 776 runners have signed up to run as of Thursday morning. There are 445 runners from outside of Salina including 135 from outside the state of Kansas.

4. Missouri has 31 runners registered and is the state with the highest number of registrations.

5. There are more than 40 organizations providing sponsorships and support which are allowing all race entry fees to be provided to the Salina Family YMCA, Kansas Youth Sports, USD 305 School Marathon, and Salina Area Youth Sportsmanship Initiative.

6. There will be great food including burgers by Cozy Inn after the race. Vegetarian post-race meal options will also be available.

7. The Salina Crossroads Marathon is expected to create an economic impact of approximately $380,000.

There are five events to participate in on Nov 5. In addition to the full marathon there is also a half marathon, half marathon relay, marathon relay, and 4.01K (2.5 mile) Family Fun Run/Walk. Multiple-time Olympic trials qualifier Joe Moore headlines Salina Crossroads event

A winter weather advisory has been issued for several counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 8 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

Rain to snow change over is expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible. A few locations could see locally higher amounts.

Snow could be heavy at times with snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour or higher possible. This would allow snow to quickly accumulate on roadways and create hazardous travel conditions. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

A Salina man was cited after a car he was driving struck the pillar of a crosswalk arch on S. Santa Fe Avenue early this morning.

Camron Glover, 27, of Salina, was northbound in the 200 block of S. Santa Fe Avenue at approximately 1:20 a.m. Friday in a 2012 Chrysler 300 when the car veered to the right and struck the pillar, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Glover left the scene, but was later taken to the police station by a relative who owns the car, Forrester said.

The car sustained major front-end damage and was towed from the scene.

Forrester said City of Salina Building Services checked the structure, but did not closed off S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Glover was cited for improper driving on laned roadways and duty to report an accident.

WICHITA — McPherson College, a Kansas liberal arts college known for its one-of-a-kind Automotive Restoration Technology degree program, held a press conference on Friday in Wichita to announce that it has received the largest-ever single commitment to a small liberal arts college in the United States.

The anonymous double match estate commitment is worth $500 million and over time will allow the college to reimagine and reinvent its campus while it pursues initiatives that enhance the student experience.

As part of the “double match” estate gift, the anonymous donor will contribute two dollars for every dollar given by others, up to $500 million to the college’s endowment.

The anonymous donor can opt to pay over time, or the total is due in full upon their death. The college has until June 30, 2023 to meet this target, and is well on its way having raised $130 million to date.

ASSARIA - An Assaria man was arrested Thursday on multiple requested charges, including aggravated battery, kidnapping, and child endangerment, after an incident that began Wednesday evening.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said that a 25-year-old Assaria woman called at approximately 7:20 a.m. Thursday to report that her husband had struck her multiple times, handcuffed her to a pole in the basement for a while overnight, and then kept her locked in the basement. He also allegedly made threats against her should she contact law enforcement. The woman said he only let her out of the basement when one of their young children began crying and needed to be tended to. Two small children - an infant and a toddler - were in the house at the time of the incident.

The incident occurred after the couple got into an argument Wednesday night at approximately 8 p.m., Soldan said.

After her husband went to work Thursday morning, the woman went to a neighbor's to make the call, as her husband, identified as Kevin M. Walden, 38, of Assaria, had taken her cellphone, Soldan said.

According to Soldan, Walden was arrested at his place of work on the following requested charges.

A bicyclist was injured Thursday afternoon when he was struck by a car in central Salina.

Cody Miller, 27, of Salina, was riding a Fucare E-Bike westbound on Russell Avenue when he was struck by a 2016 Ford Fusion driven by John Weber, 63, of Salina, that was southbound on Norton Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The impact sent Miller up onto the hood of the car and into the windshield.

The collision occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. Thursday.

Forrester said Miller was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center and was later released.

Miller's bicycle was destroyed. The Fusion sustained front-end damage and a broken windshield. 

At the time of the report, no citations had been issued.
