Santa Fe Trail presentation Part 2 at Smoky Hill Museum

UPDATE 10:45 a.m. Tuesday: According to information received from the Salina Police Department this morning, the below Crimestoppers story provided to Salina media on Friday is no longer a criminal investigation. Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges told Salina Post this morning that "there were some errors made in the paperwork at the scrap yard and we were able to determine there was not a crime committed."

On Jan. 18, officers with the Salina Police Department received a report of an identity theft at Dillon’s, 1235 E. Cloud Street in Salina. 

The victim learned a check had been cashed at the business in her name without her knowledge.

The investigation revealed the suspect had sold property at a local Salina scrap yard. The suspect provided personal identifying information for the victim and was given a check as payment. Video surveillance from Dillon’s shows a male suspect cashing the check.

These classes will meet on Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. in Cook Theatre at Cloud County Community College, 2221 Campus Drive in Concordia. Brenton Phillips, Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business, will introduce the films and lead a discussion after the movies are shown.&nbsp;

The course is “Thinking the Unthinkable: Nuclear Nightmares and Cold War Paranoia Films of the Early 1960s” and examines six influential films in years surrounding the Cuban Missile Crisis when tensions were at a fever-pitch between the US and the Soviet Union.

Feb. 9:&nbsp; Fail-Safe (1964) – A mechanical glitch brings the US and the Soviet Union to the brink of the abyss.

Feb. 16:&nbsp; Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964):&nbsp; – A “black comedy” that satirizes the absurdity of the nuclear age.

Feb. 23:&nbsp;On the Beach (1959) – The world’s last survivors of a nuclear holocaust await the deadly cloud of radioactive fallout to reach them in Australia.

“Even though these films are 60 years old, they still have relevance. For one thing, even though they may be fictional and sometimes represent their subjects inaccurately, they served then to shake people out of their complacency and to come to terms with what Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling described as ‘what man has deeded to himself,’” said Phillips.

“Today their relevance continues because the threat of nuclear war still hangs over us, especially with Vladimir Putin’s nuke threats against The Ukraine and the West and rogue states like North Korea and Iran driving to develop nuclear weapons and delivery systems. TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Commerce on Monday announced $40 million will be made available under the&nbsp;ARPA Building Opportunities for the Disabled and Elderly (ABODE)&nbsp;and&nbsp;State Park Revitalization and Investment in Notable Tourism (SPRINT)&nbsp;grant programs. 

The ABODE program will provide $10 million in funding for new construction projects and renovation of affordable multi-dwelling housing units for persons with disabilities and the elderly. The SPRINT program will distribute $30 million for investments in regional tourism assets and state parks.

The funds were designated by the Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas (SPARK) Executive Committee and approved by the State Finance Council in December.

“In order for us to continue on our path of historic growth, we must continue to invest in quality-of-life assets,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Providing quality housing for all Kansans and developing attractive regional tourist destinations will help us create strong, inviting communities across the state.”

ABODE applications can include health and safety renovations to existing buildings or construction of new multi-housing units that accommodate individuals who are elderly and/or disabled. Project design, engineering costs and architectural designs are also permitted as eligible expenditures. Awardees will have two years to complete their projects and utilize all awarded funds.

●Nonprofit organizations in good standing with the state of Kansas

 ●Counties and local units of government

●Existing entities that provide housing designed specifically for older adults and people with disabilities

SPRINT applications can include, but are not limited to:

●Infrastructure enhancements, capital projects, renovations

●Renovation and repair of indoor and outdoor facilities, roads and utility connections adjacent to the project site

●Development of public land to create a tourism destination

●Costs associated with recruitment of new permanent and semi-permanent exhibits

●Other tourism-focused businesses and tourism agencies

The ABODE and SPRINT grant applications both open at 2:00 p.m. today, with submissions closing at 11:59 p.m. Feb. 27, for both programs.

●The group will consider priorities within each of the key focus areas and discuss how to track progress.

Senior Harper Johnston will be representing Salina Central High School in the International Honor Choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Feb. 5. The International Honor Choir is a highly competitive program, and students undergo a lengthy audition process to be selected. Several thousand students from countries across the world apply to be selected for the choir. A soprano, Johnston is also the first female student from Central to participate in the International Choir.

Johnston said, “Oh, that looks so cool! I could never be that good though. However, I kept working and was really invested and excited to apply. My teacher always pushes me to improve and reach for new musical opportunities, so he was happy to provide a nomination for the application. I watched and waited for the email for months, and I finally got some good news!” Johnston is the fourth student to be selected to sing at Carnegie Hall from Salina Central’s choirs in the last five years. She is the student of Ryan Holmquist, choir director at Central. Johnston is the daughter of Peter and Sara Johnston of Salina.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NEW CAMBRIA - A space heater is believed to be the cause of a Sunday morning fire that destroyed a camper and killed three dogs in New Cambria.

The fire was first reported to authorities at 7:05 a.m. Sunday, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

The fifth-wheel camper belonging to Charles Rhodes, 68, was parked at his residence in the 200 block of E. Second Street. Rhodes' son, Toby, had been living in the camper with three dogs: a pitbull, a German shepherd mix and a mixed breed puppy, Soldan said. All three dogs died in the blaze.

The camper and a Cub Cadet mower and tiller that were next to the camper were all destroyed, resulting in a $13,000 loss for Charles Rhodes. 

In addition to the three dogs, Toby Rhodes lost approximately $1,000 worth of items in the fire. 

Soldan said that a space heater in the camper is believed to have caused the blaze.

Kansas Wesleyan’s Pioneer Hall was named to the National Register of Historic Places earlier this month. 

It becomes the 19th&nbsp;location in Saline County to earn the recognition, joining such places as the former post office building (now the Smoky Hill Museum), the Fox-Watson Theatre (now the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts), and the Masonic Temple (now The Temple) in Salina.

“We are proud to have been a consistent presence in Salina for 136 years,” said Matt Thompson, president of KWU. “This designation speaks to the resilience and staying power of Kansas Wesleyan in this community. Those who have passed through the doors of Pioneer Hall have often enhanced both Kansas Wesleyan and Salina. This university is indebted to the pioneers who came before us and invested in KWU. The Hall of the Pioneers remains a monument of appreciation to them.”

Excavation began for Pioneer Hall, KWU’s second administration building, in 1922. The project was finished in 1929 and given its formal name, The Hall of the Pioneers, to honor those in the city, state and region who gave of themselves to establish KWU. That included local professionals, who successfully executed a campaign to raise $50,000 toward the project’s completion. A donation of $25,000 by E.C. Sams, the then-president of JCPenney, helped finish the centerpiece of the building, Sams Chapel, which was named in honor of his parents.

“KWU has invested significantly in Pioneer Hall in the past several years to make sure it continues to be an excellent place to learn, work and serve students,” said Thompson. “This mindset will be enhanced by the $4.5 million renovation and expansion of Sams Chapel and the music department in the coming year. KWU continues to grow and change. The heart and soul of our campus, Sams Chapel and Pioneer Hall, remain vibrant and active.”

The building is recognized as being an outstanding example of collegiate gothic architecture and as a representative of the work of renowned Wichita architect Lorentz Schmidt.

A Salina man faces multiple requested charges, including kidnapping and aggravated domestic battery after incidents dating back to Dec. 17.

Officers were first sent to a residence in the 300 block of N. Kansas Avenue on Dec. 17 for the report of a physical domestic incident. A 23-year-old Salina woman told police that Jason Lytle, 38, of Salina, allegedly had punched her in the face while she was in the bathroom, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The woman had a laceration on her chin.

At that point, Lytle could not be found, Forrester said.

On Friday at 11 a.m., officers were sent to the Rodeway Inn, 2337 S. Ninth Street, for the report of a physical domestic incident allegedly between the woman and Lytle. Officers were told that Lytle had left northbound on S. Ninth Street in a tan Mercury Cougar. 

A responding officer saw the car headed northbound on S. Ninth Street and attempted to stop Lytle, however, Lytle led police on a chase, Forrester said. The chase went east on E. Schilling Road to S. Ohio Street, then north on S. Ohio Street to Schippel Drive, where a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper had spike strips set up, he said.

Lytle swerved into on-coming traffic to avoid the spikes, however, another set of spikes that were set up nearby by Salina Police successfully punctured his tires, Forrester said.

Lytle turned east on E. Beloit Avenue and then north on Courtney Drive before he was apprehended. A marijuana pipe was found in the car.

Forrester said that while the pursuit was going on, other officers interviewed the woman who told them that on Wednesday at the Rodeway Inn, Lytle had allegedly head-butted her. She had an injury on her forehead. Then, on Friday, while she was in the restroom, Lytle allegedly threw her to the floor and attempted to strangle her, Forrester said. 

As Lytle was allegedly throwing the woman to the floor, she grabbed for a towel rack, pulling it from the wall, Forrester added. Damage was estimated at $100.

Lytle was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Beloit Avenue and then north on Courtney Drive before he was apprehended. A marijuana pipe was found in the car.Forrester said that while the pursuit was going on, other officers interviewed the woman who told them that on Wednesday at the Rodeway Inn, Lytle had allegedly head-butted her. She had an injury on her forehead. Then, on Friday, while she was in the restroom, Lytle allegedly threw her to the floor and attempted to strangle her, Forrester said. As Lytle was allegedly throwing the woman to the floor, she grabbed for a towel rack, pulling it from the wall, Forrester added. Incidents result in kidnapping, other requested charges for Salina man

A Salina man was arrested Friday night after two hit-and-run incidents in the southern part of the city.

Officers were first dispatched to the area of the 200 block of E. Ray Avenue at 10 p.m. Friday for the report of a hit-and-run crash. A Dodge Ram pickup that was traveling eastbound had struck a mailbox in that block and then struck a parked 1987 Dodge Dakota, forcing the Dakota into another mailbox, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

A witness followed the Ram to the 2600 block of E. Key Avenue, where it struck another mailbox.

Police located the Ram and its driver, identified as Kevin Redetzke, 44, of Salina, in the 1300 block of W. Magnolia Road in southwestern Salina. Forrester said both left tires were shredded and the back left tire was completely off the Ram.

After police conducted a DUI investigation, Redetzke was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

“Common Prosperity” is now the strategy being followed in China to achieve more economic equity across the Chinese population. When Deng Xiaoping took over soon after Mao’s death, China had been a country where everyone was relatively equal, as in equally poor.

Deng modernized the China economy in the 1980s by allowing the most motivated people and regions of China to get rich. Under his explanation that it did not matter whether the cat was black or white, as long as it caught the mouse, this market and education expansion dramatically sped up economic growth. But as many Chinese moved into middle and upper class status, this caused increased income inequality. &nbsp;

On Oct. 2, 2012, the United Nations presented Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao with a top United Nations award for China’s significantly reducing the number of people around the world suffering from extreme poverty. China’s actions were responsible for over 70 percent of the global reduction in poverty since the late 1970s, lifting nearly 800 million Chinese out of extreme poverty. And by the end of 2020, China had lifted their remaining 98.99 million citizens out of extreme poverty.&nbsp; &nbsp;

But Deng also realized back in 1985, that “we will fail if these policies lead to rich-poor polarization, and we will be on an evil path if a new super rich class rises.” Time has now arrived where the leadership is working to spread China’s growing prosperity, slowed by the pandemic, to develop a bigger middle class. Han Wenxiu, an economics official, explained in August 2021 in Beijing that “common prosperity means doing a proper job of expanding the pie and dividing the pie… We will not ‘kill the rich to help the poor.’”

Zhejiang, a wealthy province, has a program designed to narrow their income gap by 2025. Other regions that vary in agriculture or tech factory work have a variety of programs. China now has a middle class larger than the U.S. and more of its factory production will go toward serving its own people. This movement looks at taxation to “adjust” excessive incomes, expand the number of middle-income citizens, raise incomes of the poor and end illegal incomes. Other strategies include improving public services, increasing the social safety net by expanding social security, and bringing down the cost of medical care.

Beijing is also encouraging high-income companies and individuals to provide more support to charities. Property and inheritance taxes are also under discussion but face more opposition.

There is a stark contrast of these actions with the United States, where the income disparity is growing because the poor are getting poorer.&nbsp; According to the World Inequality Report (WIR), the top ten percent of U.S. rich earn on average 17 times more than the bottom half. And this income gap is growing, nearly returning to the 1930s levels when our super-rich contrasted with the poor masses we viewed in “The Grapes of Wrath.” WIR finds that “income inequality in the U.S. is among the highest among rich countries.”

In China, the top ten percent earn 14 times more than the bottom half. Their “common prosperity” movement is aimed at closing that gap, but not returning to an equal pay egalitarianism! China has the second largest economy in the world, but is now the largest based on purchasing power parity that adjusts for differences in domestic currencies.

There was an early 1900s song that said “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer…ain’t we got fun!” That song doesn’t play in China.&nbsp;&nbsp;
