Celebrating its 17th year, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Hall of Fame has announced the names of three prominent Salina businesspersons who are to be inducted into the 2022 class on Nov. 10.

This year's inductees include Mabel Shelton (Historic Category 1926-1975), Mel Jarvis (Historic Category 1926-1975), and Larry Triplett (Contemporary Category 1976-present).

Additionally a new award - the Spirit of Salina Award - is to be presented to an emerging entrepreneur in the community. 

"The awardee selected represents the "best of the best" in terms of overcoming obstacles, believing in their dreams, taking risks, and persisting as a small business owner. They embody a spirit - the entrepreneurial spirit of Salina - and those that have come before. This awardee will be named during the Business Hall of Fame induction ceremony," according to information from the Salina Business Hall of Fame taskforce.

This year's induction ceremony is scheduled for noon-1:30 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Salina Country Club. Kansas State University President Richard Linton is scheduled to be the featured speaker.

"Its purpose is to recognize and honor Salina business leaders, both past and present, who have made extraordinary contributions to Salina, earned the respect of the local community, and called attention to the free enterprise system and its value to our country and citizens in shaping Salina’s way of life," the chamber noted in a news release.

This year's Salina Business Hall of Fame induction set for Nov. 10

Police are looking for a pickup stolen from a landscaping business in west-central Salina on Halloween.

The 2000 Ford Ranger was believed to have been stolen from Fox Lawn and Landscaping, 1001 Franklin Street on Monday afternoon. An officer saw a man driving the pickup later in the day in the 1000 block of E. Elm Street, however, the owner hadn't yet reported the pickup stolen, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The pickup was reported stolen on Wednesday morning.

The pickup was white with black wheels and had a Kansas license plate of 761RBY. It also had a blue shifter knob. The Ranger was valued at $2,500.

Forrester said the owner was unsure whether the keys were in the pickup, however, the keys are missing.

A trick-or-treating teen was reportedly attacked by a person wearing a teddy bear onesie in east Salina Halloween night.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 17-year-old girl was trick-or-treating with her two-week-old child, boyfriend, and some other people at approximately 8:30 p.m. Monday in the 2700 block of Argonne Drive. 

The teen fell behind the others as she was not feeling well, Forrester said. At that point, an unknown person began striking her in the head, she reported. Her boyfriend looked back and saw a 5'-4" white female with brown hair and wearing a teddy bear onesie striking the teen, Forrester said.

The teen received minor injuries and was taken to Salina Regional Health Center.

Forrester said police are looking for surveillance video from the area.

NWS: Storm chances tonight for part of area; rain on the way

ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene wore blue jeans at work for another Jeans Day fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of October. 

Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. A total donation of $715 was presented to the Abilene Area Toys 4 Tots organization. 

The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.

Memorial Hospital is also an Abilene Area Toys 4 Tots drop off location for new toys, games, books, and monetary donations through Dec. 5.

A charming comedy will grace the stage at Salina South High School as the Theatre Department presents John Patrick's The Curious Savage.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in the auditorium of Salina South, 730 E. Magnolia Road. Parking for theatre patrons at Salina South is accessible from both E. Magnolia Road and Edward Street.

Seating is general admission. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens/military, and $4 for students. The Curious Savage is the story of an elderly widow named Mrs. Savage, whose husband has left her $10 million dollars. She intends to give the entire fortune away to people who wish to pursue their “foolish dreams,” but her stepchildren strongly object. To prevent her from doing away with their family’s wealth and ruining their legacy, they have her committed to a sanatorium called The Cloisters, and it is among the gentle residents there that she finds her true family. The Curious Savage is a warm comedy that compares the kindness and loyalty of psychiatric patients with the greed and hostility of so-called “normal people.”

Cast members include Mia White, Evan Dickson, Isabelle Greenemeyer, Kirsten Lamia, Ryan Franks, Aubrey Powell, Alexander Figueroa, Emily Streeter, Kara Davis, Soren Mannebach, and Elias Torres. 

Stage Managers are Jackie Fischer, Destiny Hamilton, and Malina Szyndlar. 

The production is directed by Kate Lindsay with set design by Roger Coberly and costume design by Kay Engelland and Pam Debold.

Future tenants and Salina Presbyterian Manor's leadership team broke ground Tuesday morning as construction officially began on a $15 million housing project at the Manor.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We had a need from our current waiting list to expand our villas—the single family residences," said Bruce Shogren, president and CEO of Presbyterian Manors of Mid America (PMMA). "We've been working on it but COVID slowed us down a little bit. We started up our marketing and we have a&nbsp; first phase of 22 units, of which 11 are already reserved."&nbsp;

The Villas will be built just&nbsp;east of Ralph Reitz Memorial Park. Construction of the first 22 units, making up Phase One, has begun, though seven additional units are planned according to information from Salina Presbyterian Manor. The first villa ready for occupancy will be in the fall of 2023.&nbsp; The Villas will be the only single-detached homes at the 35-acre campus, located near the existing pond, with several walking paths and a new pickleball court.

Salina Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Eric Brown&nbsp; attended the groundbreaking and spoke about the importance of identifying&nbsp; pain points in the community and the economic impact The Villas project will have.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The thing we always talk about at the chamber is the big picture. What does Salina need – what are&nbsp;our pain points, and housing is a pain point,"&nbsp;Brown said. "We need housing at all levels, and that includes the retirement community. Believe it or not, our number one economic driver in Saline County is retirees. It's almost $500 million more than the second driver which is healthcare. Salina has become known as a great place to retire."&nbsp;

Collaborating with Presbyterian Manors of Mid America on this Salina Presbyterian Manor project are the following companies: Developer - Greystone Communities, Irving, Texas; Architect - AG Architecture, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; Interior Design – RDG Planning &amp; Design, St. Louis Office, and General Constructor – Simpson Construction Services, Wichita, Kansas

Salina Presbyterian Manor breaks ground on $15M housing project

The re-launch of the <a href="https://walksalina.com/">WalkSalina website</a> calls for some celebration and we are doing just that with the WalkSalina Sweepstakes in conjunction with the 2nd&nbsp;Annual Kansas Mobility Week, Nov. 6-12.&nbsp;

The second, When Houses Become Homes, takes a look at the employees of the H.D. Wind advisories have been issued Wednesday for some counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

South winds at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.

NWS issues wind advisories for some counties in the area

Police are investigating the theft of multiple of tools from a south Salina business earlier in the week.

Sometime between 3 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 a.m. Monday, someone broke into a building at Bergkamp, Inc., 3040 Emulsion Drive, and stole nearly $9,000 worth of tools and a 55-gallon trash can, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

When employees arrived at the facility, they noticed that the south entrance on the west building had been pried open. A special locking mechanism on the entrance was bent, allowing access to the building.

Once inside, the thief or thieves accessed several places in the building and stole numerous tools belonging to Bergkamp and its employees, Forrester said. Stolen tools included the following.

Additionally, a 55-gallon restroom trashcan was stolen. Forrester said it is believed that the trashcan was used to haul the tools from the building.

Total loss was estimated at just under $9,000, he said. Damage to the door was estimated at $2,000.

Forrester said police were reviewing surveillance video from the area.

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher We are in the heart of what has been termed the “silly season of politics.” I know that for many of us voter fatigue has set in, and I have good news and bad news on that front. The good news is that in about a week or less it will all be over. The bad news is that the next cycle is a presidential election, so you have about six months before that gets cranked up. Unfortunately, the sheer volume of campaign ads and fliers turns many of us off or makes us numb to the candidates. I get that but you must fight through the urge to ignore all of it and tune it out. This is one of the most critical elections that we as an ag community have faced and this is a call for all hands on deck. It is true that all votes count but when it comes to agriculture that statement has never been truer. Candidates who support agriculture need your vote. Kansas is becoming increasingly urban and because of that voters in those areas are farther and farther away from agriculture. We are a democracy where the majority rules. Soon we could find ourselves having less of a voice over who represents us and, more importantly, what legislation gets passed. We know laws made in Topeka and Washington D.C. can have huge impacts on how we run our farms and ranches. It is important that we elect representatives that will have our best interests in mind and who understand our business. That is why the work Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends does is so important. They take the opinions from the grassroots level and develop a list of candidates who are friendly to agriculture and will keep our best interests in mind. That work is not done in a couple of days but rather in a painstaking process, making sure that all voices are heard. However, that great work doesn’t mean anything if we don’t get out and vote for those candidates. While I would like you to vote for the people on that list, and I ask that you take the time to look at it, I just want you to exercise your right to vote. Historically those of us in rural areas have gotten out at higher levels than our urban counterparts, and that amplifies our voice. Lately, that has not been the case and is a trend we need to reverse. If you are really tired of the noise around the election, go vote now. Advanced voting is open, check with your county clerk to find out how. Then it is done and no matter what happens, your voice is heard. If you are like me and a traditionalist, make sure you get out and vote on Nov. 8. Every vote counts and every vote matters. We have seen it time and time again, even right here in Kansas. Please, look at the list of VOTE FBF endorsed candidates before you make your decision. I cannot stress just how important your vote is. It’s our chance to be a voice for Kansas.

On Nov. 2, 1783, General George Washington issued his Farewell Address to the Army near Princeton, New Jersey.

In 1861, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln relieved Maj. Gen. John C. Fremont of his command of the Army's Department of the West based in St. Louis, following Fremont's unauthorized efforts to emancipate slaves in Missouri.

Authorities in Los Angeles and New York said they had opened new investigations prompted by sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein. Twitter reported that a customer support worker who was on his or her last day on the job had deactivated President Donald Trump's Twitter account for a few minutes, resulting in an error message that the user "does not exist."

One year ago: Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey narrowly won reelection in his reliably blue state while a Republican political newcomer, Glenn Youngkin, upset Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the Virginia governor's race. Democratic former police captain Eric Adams won New York's mayoral race. Minneapolis voters defeated a ballot initiative that would have replaced the city's police department with a reimagined public safety unit in the city where George Floyd died under an officer's knee. World leaders promised to protect Earth's forests, cut methane emissions and help South Africa wean itself off coal at the U.N. climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland. The Biden administration launched a wide-ranging plan to reduce methane emissions, targeting a potent greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to global warming. The Atlanta Braves won their first World Series championship since 1995, hammering the Houston Astros 7-0 in Game 6.

Lisondra will be in residency Nov. 7-8 in Salina area schools through
the Arts Infusion Program of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. 

The residency
includes a community performance that is open to the public at no charge from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on&nbsp;Nov. 8&nbsp;in the Sunflower Financial Theatre of Theatre Salina, 303 E. Iron Avenue.

Espinoza and Lisondra
are returning to Salina after performances on the main stages and children’s
stage at the 2019 and 2022 Smoky Hill River Festival. Espinoza is a
Bolivian artist who invites the listener to share a journey through his
innovative musical poetics. A master of African and Arabic percussion concerts,
Espinoza has been received with shouts of enthusiasm and a standing ovation. 

Lisondra
grew up in the Kansas City area and has traveled the world performing theatre,
circus, and dance, winning national awards for her work. 

The pair began working
together and married in Bolivia before moving back to Kansas City.&nbsp;

The pair are the 2022-23 Arts
Infusion Sharon Benson Visiting Artists. Sharon Benson served as the Arts
Education Coordinator for Salina Arts &amp; Humanities from 1994-2014. During
that time, Benson worked with
local and nationally known artists to develop programs to support the existing
school curriculum. Her passion for the power of arts education to present
thoughtful, curriculum-based encounters between students and the arts provided
an excellent foundation for the Arts Infusion program. A teaching artist is
designated each year to provide educational programs and content that reflect
cultural diversity, while connecting the arts to new and established audiences
in relevant ways.

NWS: Fire danger, then RAIN!

Police are investigating the theft of miscellaneous steel items from a north Salina property.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that a 77-year-old Salinan reported Monday that someone had stolen approximately $3,000 worth of steel items from a property in the 500 block of N. Seventh Street.

Items stolen included trailer ramps, steel plates, and steel rectangular tubing, Hanus said.

Saline County Health Department offers back-to-school vaccine tips

Salina Health Education Foundation – the parent company for Salina Family Healthcare Center (SFHC) and Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program – is proud to open the SFHC Scholarship fund for applications, for the first time since its creation earlier this year. 

This scholarship program honors former Board and Finance Committee members’ dedicated service to the Salina Health Education Foundation.

This scholarship will grant approximately $500 to student(s) planning to enter the practice of medicine, dentistry, behavioral health, pharmacy, optometry, healthcare ancillary services, or healthcare administration in the State of Kansas. People sixteen years of age or older who want to enter the healthcare profession in the state of Kansas are eligible.

“We would like to thank those Board and Finance Committee Members who have volunteered their time to build SHEF into the strong, impactful organization that it is today,” said Dr. Robert Kraft, chief executive officer and chief medical officer.

“Their legacy will help future healthcare leaders in Kansas make contributions of their own in the field and in the lives of hundreds or even thousands of patients.”

Salina Family Healthcare Center taking scholarship applications

A local man was arrested Monday in north Salina in a vehicle reported stolen earlier in the western part of the city. 

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that an officer was sent to the 900 block of Birch Drive at 5:50 p.m. Monday for the report of a stolen 2003 Buick Rendezvous. The SUV was valued at $3,000.

The victim, a 54-year-old Salina resident, and the victim's sister reported that the SUV was stolen from the front driveway of the residence. A known suspect had been at the house and information about that person was provided to the officer, Hanus said.

Another officer later observed the SUV in the 600 block of W. Diamond Drive and conducted a traffic stop. The known suspect, identified as Marquis T. Wellington, 26, of Salina, was the lone occupant of the SUV and was taken into custody, Hanus said.

Wellington faces requested charges of felony theft and theft, Hanus said.

The&nbsp;Love Salina community campaign&nbsp;received a $50,000 gift at the recent first quarterly Salina Chamber of Commerce Builders Breakfast.&nbsp;

Ben Waters, the regional manager of Eagle Communications' radio, digital, and creative markets in Salina, Manhattan, and Junction City, presented the check on behalf of The Schmidt Foundation. In Salina, Eagle Communications owns 99KG, 94.5 Prime, KINA, and Salina Post.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Waters said the gift was being made to the Love Salina campaign because of Eagle employee owners' philosophy&nbsp;"to help improve the communities we live, work, and play in."&nbsp;

They believed the rising tide lifts all boats – by giving back to your community, it will spark a chain reaction of good and create an even playing field for us all to thrive and grow in.&nbsp;Both Bob and Pat cared about the communities they served, but Pat had a special interest in community projects. "We have a great food scene, unbelievable public art, fantastic museums, a beautiful AZA accredited zoo, wonderful athletic venues, and one of the best historic theaters for live music in the nation, amongst so much more."&nbsp;Young&nbsp;underscored&nbsp;that throughout its history, Salina has been known as a city of commerce, mostly separated from the history of the Old West and cattle towns Kansas is often associated with.&nbsp;"In many ways we have all the amenities of a large metropolitan area, with the ambiance and benefits of a smaller town," Young said.&nbsp;The new campaign is designed to establish a more cohesive brand and identity for Salina to support future growth and bolster tourism along the corridors of Interstate 70 and Interstate 35.&nbsp;Although the campaign is designed to bolster tourism to the Salina area, Love Salina was created to help Salina residents demonstrate pride in their town.&nbsp;"Love Salina is a way that we're really trying to be engaged, and help the community have a little pride in itself," said Brown.&nbsp;"I think Midwest nice is a real thing. I think we all kind of keep our heads down and nose to the grindstone, we work really hard to see the fruits of those labors. But we don't necessarily tell anyone."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
