By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostThe Salina Fire Department this afternoon announced the death of Battalion Chief John Goertzen.Salina Fire Chief Tony Sneidar told Salina Post that Goertzen was off duty at the time of his death Friday. No other details are being provided at this time."We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and all of his friends and co-workers during this difficult time. Please, keep them in your thoughts and prayers," the department noted in a news release.Sneidar praised Goertzen for his dedication, professionalism, and compassion, and noted that the entire department was devastated at the news of his passing.Goertzen served as battalion chief for the past five years, according to information from the department. He also served as a firefighter/EMT, fire engineer/EMT, and fire captain during his 27 years with the Salina Fire Department.Funeral arrangements for Goertzen are pending.
