Police are reviewing surveillance video to see whether they can determine who broke two large windows at south Salina business locations over the weekend. 

Sometime overnight Saturday-Sunday, someone broke a four-foot by six-foot window of the storefront at 2342 Planet Avenue where CD Tradepost was located. Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that the hole in the window was large enough for a person to get through. It appeared that whoever broke the window also was in the store and exited through the back door as the door was unlocked, he said. Nothing appeared to be missing at that location, he added.

While officers were there, they were notified that a four-foot by six-foot window at nearby Copy Co, 2346 Planet Avenue, also had been broken. 

Damage to each window was estimated at $2,500, Forrester said.

China is now leading the U.S. in 37 of 44 technology fields, according to the March 2, 2023 summary by&nbsp;The Guardian. Their data comes from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute that looked at the top ten-percent of cited papers worldwide across science fields. This confirms an earlier August 10, 2022 release by Japan’s National Institute of Science and Technology that examined the top one percent of highly cited research papers worldwide and found China now produced 27.2 percent while the U.S. followed with 24.9 percent. In total output of research papers during 2018-2020, Chinese researchers published 407,181 while U.S. researchers only wrote 293,434.

This is a continuation of educational trends going back over 40 years. Chinese universities surpassed the U.S. in STEM graduates in 2007. Their number of science research publications exceeded ours in 2017 and their numbers of patents surpassed us in 2019. The Australian and Japan studies are the 13th and 14th studies since August 2021 that document this U.S. decline in science production. These other studies are from American thinktanks including Harvard’s Belfer Center, the Center for Strategic International Studies, Center for Security and Emerging Technology, National Foundation for American Policy, and others.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

You can trash any theory that this is all because “China steals from us.” When I stand in front of a class of 60 Chinese students about to graduate and become high school biology teachers, I ask: “In the future, will we need to know more science, the same amount of science as today, or less science?”&nbsp; And the answer is one unified voice: “More Science!” from the mouth of every student. That is not the response that I get when speaking in front of American audiences where our science curriculum has actually shrunk in many states since the Sputnik era.

A student in China spends twice as much time in K-12 science coursework as does an American student. Indeed, they know more science content when they graduate from high school than our elementary teachers have learned when they graduate from U.S. colleges. In the U.S., the number of science courses taken by high school science teachers varies dramatically state-by-state. Many take few science courses but lots of ever-changing Ed School methods courses. In China, high school teachers are trained at bachelor degree level in science departments with course requirements equal to those going into industry or further advanced study for research.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

U.S. teacher preparation is declining. Only eleven states in the U.S. require secondary teachers to have separate licenses in biology, chemistry, physics or earth science. To teach two or more sciences in high school, a student would need to take additional summer courses or add a year or more to add those licenses. But our other 40 states (includes DC) merely require a weak one-size-fits-all general science teacher with only one or two classes in each of the subdisciplines. This is barely adequate for a middle school science teacher. We could hope that the 40 weak states would increase the rigor and depth of training of their secondary science teachers and join Kansas and the other ten stronger states.

Quite to the contrary, efforts are underway to go the other direction and dilute the depth of science teacher training. Acceptance of the Interstate Teaching Mobility Compact is included in Kansas Senate Bill 66. All states surrounding Kansas have the weak general science teachers. The Kansas State Board of Education is being asked to also approve it in various ways. Kansas is one of eight states where the State Board of Education—not the Legislature—is given jurisdiction over teacher licensure requirements. This therefore should not be Legislature business. And the KSBE voting options do not include rejecting the Compact outright and maintaining the solid science teacher requirements that have in the past made Kansas one of the top states producing scientists on a per capita basis. &nbsp;

I have sent the earlier documentation showing the U.S. falling behind in science to over 850 members of state boards of education across the U.S. None replied with any intention to strengthen their K-12 science requirements or science teacher preparation. The U.S. is in a race to the bottom in science literacy and scientist production, and these are the actions that drive it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

An eight foot tall tomato plant? It sounds like a gardener’s dream, but one innovative young&nbsp;rural&nbsp;Kansas couple is making it become reality using a gardening technique known as hydroponics.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Samuel and MaryAnn Beachy are the founders and owners of Beachy’s Flowers and Produce. They were living in Kentucky and then moved to Kansas to be closer to MaryAnn’s parents in Lyndon.&nbsp;

Samuel was operating a locker plant in Osage City until he sold that business. The Beachys’ church was looking to expand in the Wamego and Manhattan area, and Samuel wanted to pursue a new enterprise there.&nbsp;

“I’ve always been intrigued with growing things,” Samuel said. “I loved to grow things in the garden.”&nbsp;

As he and MaryAnn considered a move, they thought about the type of produce operation that could work best in northeast Kansas and decided to try an indoor, hydroponic system. “He did a lot of studying,” MaryAnn said.&nbsp;

As the Beachys prepared to relocate, they told the realtor they were looking for a location that was served by natural gas and was next to a major highway. The realtor identified just one location. It was the first place the Beachys looked at, and they bought it. “This was a Godsend,” Samuel said.&nbsp;

The location was next to Highway 24 east of Manhattan. It already had a house with a large shop. The Beachys built a state-of-the-art polycarbonate truss-style greenhouse that connected to the shop. It is fully hydroponic, so the plants are raised in recycled water with the precise nutrients needed.&nbsp;

Beachy’s Flowers and Produce opened on Nov. 30, 2022. For now, the flowers are coming from Council Grove, but the produce is homegrown and booming.&nbsp;

The Beachys produce tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, peppers, cauliflower, spring onions, kale, spinach, cilantro and cucumbers. In the future, they plan to also grow carrots, beets, potatoes and strawberries. The climate-controlled greenhouse enables produce to be grown year-round.&nbsp;

“My goal is to provide a place where people can buy produce at the same place that it is grown,” Samuel said. That would definitely seem to shorten the supply chain.&nbsp;

“I want to raise enough that you can make a good salad with what we produce.”&nbsp;

The production process is highly scientific, with probes used to control pH and nutrient levels. No soil is needed. Water is constantly recirculated. A retractable ceiling curtain helps control the climate naturally.&nbsp;

“We can open the curtain to let the sun in, and close it when we want to hold in the warmth,” Samuel said.&nbsp;

Lettuce seedlings, for example, are started under growlights. The rooted seedlings, in peat pellets, are placed in rows of watertight PVC trays through which the water and nutrients are pumped and recirculated. The trays are placed on waist-high metal frames and, with time, moved farther apart to make room for the plants to grow.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We have to plan ahead,” Samuel said. “We plant 200 seeds per week of lettuce, and harvest in two months.”&nbsp;

The Beachys’ butterhead lettuce, with just a hint of sweetness, is a variety that has proven especially popular.&nbsp;

For tomatoes, the truss ceiling makes it possible to use string to hold up the tops of the plants, enabling them to grow to their full potential. With proper trimming and treatment, these plants can grow eight feet tall and produce extraordinary tomatoes. “Our goal is three-quarter pound tomatoes,” Samuel said.&nbsp;

Their produce is available for sale at grocery stores in Wamego, Westmoreland, and Holton; at Manhattan farmer’s market; and direct from the greenhouse. “I would like to grow the business so that people can come right here for their produce,” Samuel said.&nbsp;

Their location is along Highway 24 northwest of the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of St. George, population 1,054 people.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

It sounds like a gardener’s dream, but one innovative young&nbsp;rural&nbsp;Kansas couple is making it become reality using a gardening technique known as hydroponics.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Samuel and MaryAnn Beachy are the founders and owners of Beachy’s Flowers and Produce. They were living in Kentucky and then moved to Kansas to be closer to MaryAnn’s parents in Lyndon.&nbsp;Samuel was operating a locker plant in Osage City until he sold that business. The Beachys’ church was looking to expand in the Wamego and Manhattan area, and Samuel wanted to pursue a new enterprise there.&nbsp;“I’ve always been intrigued with growing things,” Samuel said. “I loved to grow things in the garden.”&nbsp;As he and MaryAnn considered a move, they thought about the type of produce operation that could work best in northeast Kansas and decided to try an indoor, hydroponic system. “He did a lot of studying,” MaryAnn said.&nbsp;As the Beachys prepared to relocate, they told the realtor they were looking for a location that was served by natural gas and was next to a major highway. The realtor identified just one location. It was the first place the Beachys looked at, and they bought it. “This was a Godsend,” Samuel said.&nbsp;The location was next to Highway 24 east of Manhattan. It already had a house with a large shop. The Beachys built a state-of-the-art polycarbonate truss-style greenhouse that connected to the shop. It is fully hydroponic, so the plants are raised in recycled water with the precise nutrients needed.&nbsp;Beachy’s Flowers and Produce opened on Nov. 30, 2022. For now, the flowers are coming from Council Grove, but the produce is homegrown and booming.&nbsp;The Beachys produce tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, peppers, cauliflower, spring onions, kale, spinach, cilantro and cucumbers. In the future, they plan to also grow carrots, beets, potatoes and strawberries. The climate-controlled greenhouse enables produce to be grown year-round.&nbsp;“My goal is to provide a place where people can buy produce at the same place that it is grown,” Samuel said. That would definitely seem to shorten the supply chain.&nbsp;“I want to raise enough that you can make a good salad with what we produce.”&nbsp;The production process is highly scientific, with probes used to control pH and nutrient levels. No soil is needed. Water is constantly recirculated. A retractable ceiling curtain helps control the climate naturally.&nbsp;“We can open the curtain to let the sun in, and close it when we want to hold in the warmth,” Samuel said.&nbsp;Lettuce seedlings, for example, are started under growlights. The rooted seedlings, in peat pellets, are placed in rows of watertight PVC trays through which the water and nutrients are pumped and recirculated. The trays are placed on waist-high metal frames and, with time, moved farther apart to make room for the plants to grow.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;“We have to plan ahead,” Samuel said. “We plant 200 seeds per week of lettuce, and harvest in two months.”&nbsp;The Beachys’ butterhead lettuce, with just a hint of sweetness, is a variety that has proven especially popular.&nbsp;For tomatoes, the truss ceiling makes it possible to use string to hold up the tops of the plants, enabling them to grow to their full potential. With proper trimming and treatment, these plants can grow eight feet tall and produce extraordinary tomatoes. “Our goal is three-quarter pound tomatoes,” Samuel said.&nbsp;Their produce is available for sale at grocery stores in Wamego, Westmoreland, and Holton; at Manhattan farmer’s market; and direct from the greenhouse. “I would like to grow the business so that people can come right here for their produce,” Samuel said.&nbsp;Their location is along Highway 24 northwest of the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of St. George, population 1,054 people.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;For more information, contact Beachy’s Flowers and Produce at&nbsp;785-219-1759.&nbsp;Eight feet tall tomato plants? NOW THAT'S RURAL: Samuel Beachy, Beachy’s Flowers and Produce

Father Gale Hammerschmidt was a junior at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in his hometown of Hays when the Academy Award-winning movie “Field of Dreams” was released in April of 1989.

Like most folks who have seen Field of Dreams, especially sports fans, Father Gale probably well remembers the movie’s thematic phrase, “If you build it, they will come.”

That reference was to building a baseball diamond in the middle of an Iowa cornfield, which attracted ghosts of baseball legends to emerge from the cornfield to play ball.

Now a Catholic priest in the Diocese of Salina, Father Gale helped build a Catholic church in the middle of the Kansas Flint Hills.

The new, spacious St. Isidore’s church in Manhattan offers much more room for Kansas State University students to worship, making Father Gale’s reward much greater than an Academy Award.

Father Gale, the chaplain at St. Isidore’s chapel on the K-State campus, would be the first to tell you that students were flocking to St. Isidore’s long before he even became a priest.

After graduating from TMP-Marian in 1990, Father Gale attended K-State and frequented St. Isidore’s as a college student. He graduated from KSU in 1995 and taught middle school history at Manhattan Catholic Schools for 10 years before entering the seminary.&nbsp;

Not long after being ordained a priest in 2012, Father Gale founded Prayer and Action, a summer service mission trip for teenagers, who serve local communities around the Salina Diocese. Other dioceses across the state have since adopted that ministry as well.

After serving in several capacities in the diocese for five years, Father Gale was assigned to St. Isidore’s in 2017, and a building committee was formed soon thereafter.

It had been a dream for many years to expand the space or build a new church at St. Isidore’s, which has long has been a beacon to students from near and far, including several from northwest Kansas.

“I chose K-State because of St. Isidore’s,” Jamie Kuhlman from Oakley said of the Catholic campus center where she attends daily Mass and a plethora of other activities.

“Our goal is to get to heaven,” added Kuhlman, co-president of St. Isidore’s student leadership team. “St. Isidore’s has meant so much to me through my college journey. I’m excited to see more students get involved and grow in their faith.”

Following is my story of the dedication of the new St. Isidore’s chapel earlier this year, which first appeared in the February issue of The Register, the newspaper for the Salina Diocese.

The bells in the tower of a beautiful new church in Manhattan, Kansas, began ringing at straight-up noon on a Saturday in late January, signaling the start of a day of grand celebration.

Students, family and friends joined clergy and alumni scurrying around, making their way to the Alumni Center at Kansas State University, awaiting their cue to march across the street for a special, long-awaited ceremony.

Excitement was in the air on the unseasonably warm afternoon as 600-some people anticipated the dedication of the St. Isidore’s Catholic Church.

“Oohs” and “ahs” could be heard as people got closer and closer to the 14,000-square-foot limestone church and student center at the corner of Anderson and Denison Streets.

The crowd gathered on the front brick patio, and Bishop Jerry Vincke smiled as he stood near the front doors.

The bishop accepted the keys to the church from the contractor, knocked on the door and walked inside. And the celebration began.

The dedication ceremony part of the Mass included blessing the church and congregation with Holy Water, anointing the walls and the altar with Chrism oil, placing incense on the altar and lighting candles on the altar and all around the church.

During the sacred anointing of the altar, the bishop poured oil onto the altar, then rubbed the oil into the marble top with his own hands.

Bishop Vincke likened the ceremony to the baptism of a baby.

“(Parents) bring a baby to the waters of baptism and are asked ‘What do you ask of God?’ One could say that we are baptizing the Church today,” he said.

Father Gale Hammerschmidt, pastor at St. Isidore’s, could only shake his head after Mass while thanking everyone. Overcome with emotion, he once paused for several seconds before continuing on.

“I was humbled by the hundreds and hundreds of people who have so appreciated this mission that we have been on,” he said. “I’m so grateful to God that he put the right people in the right place during this journey.”

One of those “right people” was Father Gale himself.

A Kansas State alum, Father Gale knew of the ongoing discussions about a new church. When he was assigned to serve as pastor at St. Isidore’s in 2017, he heard about it immediately. By the next year, he and the board had begun an ardent fundraising campaign that raised $11 million toward the $18 million project.

Less than five years later, the dream became reality.

After a new student center was built, the old church was demolished. During construction of the new chapel, Mass was held at the Alumni Center and/or the student center.&nbsp;

Now, visitors to St. Isidore’s are greeted by a large, ornate baptismal font as they enter the chapel. Eyes are drawn to the wooden vaulted ceiling. A stunning golden mosaic in the front of the marble altar from Italy draws them closer to the front of the church.

Stained glass windows of St. Isidore (the chapel’s namesake) and St. Robert Bellarmine (the student centers namesake) were saved from the old chapel and are in plain view over the choir loft above the back of the chapel. Those windows also can be seen from the outside, standing over the front doors.

“The Catholic Church is the world’s largest proponent of beauty, because one of God’s attributes is beauty,” Father Gale said. “If you design something beautiful, you are indeed honoring God.”

“As much as the building is beautiful, it’s even more beautiful today, because you are in it,” Bishop Vincke said, particularly addressing the students. “That’s why this church exists. You are Christ’s body, the Church. This church is a gift to you.”

Either expanding St. Isidore’s or building a new church had been discussed for many years. More than 1,500 students attend Mass at St. Isidore’s on any given weekend. The old church held about 425 people, with 80 more seats in the library to watch Mass on video.

The new chapel will seat 650, with additional chair seating for overflow.

Stan Weber, who attended K-State in the early 1980s, said he remembers the church being full to capacity 40 years ago.

Weber, who played quarterback for the Wildcat football tram from 1980-84, spent a lot of time at St. Isidore’s. He and his wife are both alumni of K-State, and all four of the couple’s children attended KSU – and St. Isidore’s. Weber, the long-time color analyst for K-State Sports Network, still frequents the church.

“St. Isidore’s has always been a big part of our lives,” he said. “It’s a great place to be for young people making informed choices about their faith.”&nbsp;

Dave Dreiling, one of the lead donors for the project, agreed.

“This project tugs at my heart like nothing else,” Dreiling said. “These 18- to 22-year olds are making the decision on their own faith, not that of their parents. They are getting involved and developing their faith, and lot of them will be active parish members decades from now.”

After much planning and meeting with focus groups that included alumni and students, a Neo-Gothic traditional architecture was chosen for the design. All along the way, the architects took students’ suggestions seriously.

“I’d say 99 percent of the students said they wanted the church to look like a church,” Father Gale said. “We weren’t going to do anything other than traditional.”

Ridge Pinkston, a history major from Kingman, was a member of the building committee. He is particularly interested in architectural history and was instrumental in helping choose the traditional Neo-Gothic architecture theme for the new church.

“It is really rewarding to help in the building of something beautiful like this,” Pinkston said, “something that will honestly change people’s lives.”

“I know the&nbsp;choices I make as a student really center around St. Isidore’s,” said Grace Gorges from Clearwater, another student who served on the building committee. “It has had a big impact on my life and my own personal progression, just my life in general. This gives more students the chance to experience that.”

One stakeholder in the project for many years who wasn’t present, Dr. Jack Peterson, was recognized at the dedication. Peterson was a former K-State professor and chair of the St. Isidore Foundation Board who led the charge for building a new church. He lost his battle with lung cancer last September and didn’t get to see the project to completion.

Nonetheless, Peterson’s legend will no doubt live on for generations to come.

Hays native key in bringing new Catholic chapel to K-State campus

MARION - A minor earthquake shook part of eastern Marion County Sunday morning.

According to information from the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.8 magnitude quake struck east-northeast of Marion at 5:32 a.m. Sunday. It was centered northeast of the Clover Road/220th Street intersection near the Marion-Chase county line.

Minor quake shakes part of eastern Marion County Sunday

Salina Presbyterian Manor's 43rd Art is Ageless opens this week for a three-day exhibition.

Eighty-six pieces of art by both amateur and professional artists ages 65 and older are included in the exhibition.

Art is Ageless will be open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday in the Crossroads Ballroom of Homewood Suites by Hilton, 115 E. Mulberry in Salina.

Voter suppression bills are once again making their way through the state legislature.

The justification — or lack thereof as the case may be — for these bills lies with the unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud made during the 2020 election.

Legislation like these could be warranted if they were being passed to increase election security. But they’re not. Recent elections in Kansas have been as safe and secure as they have ever been.

Hundreds of post-election audits have been conducted across the state since 2020, and not a single failure has been uncovered.

Republican Secretary of State Scott Schwab has been an outspoken critic of measures that would restrict the state’s ability to collect ballots from voters, causing a rift between top Republican officials in Kansas.

But ever since 2020, questioning election integrity has become a political dog whistle in state houses across the country.

A majority of Kansans don’t seem to be buying it.

The 2022 Kansas Speaks public opinion survey conducted by the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University last fall asked questions about perceptions of voter fraud and election integrity in our state.

The survey found that only 11% of respondents thought fraudulent voting decides elections in our state and about the same number (12%) thought state and local officials commit election fraud to alter outcomes.

These results suggest that even if Kansans possibly believe one-off incidents of voter fraud are common — there is little evidence to support this, only a handful of cases have been found in the past decade — they do not believe there widespread systemic fraud that alters election results

Despite little popular support, state legislators are perpetuating these false claims by introducing legislation that restricts voters’ ability to cast a ballot.

Senate Bill 208 would modify state law on use of ballot drop boxes. In its original form, it would have limited each county to a single dropbox — severely impractical for the state’s largest counties like Johnson and Sedgwick.

SB 208 was then amended to eliminate the use of ballot drop boxes altogether, despite no reported problems with their usage.

In the Kansas Speaks survey, less than one-third of Kansas voters thought ballot drop boxes should be banned.

Senate Bill 209 eliminates the current three day grace period for accepting mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day.

Research shows that mail-in voting is disproportionately used by elderly, disabled, military, and college student voters and therefore restricting when mail-in ballots can be accepted would disenfranchise these voters specifically.

The harm done by these bills is far greater than any credible “justification” legislators could have for supporting them.

Passing these bills would be a shortsighted move by the state legislature. There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, let alone voter fraud related to drop boxes and mail-in ballots; there is a lack of popular support for these measures among Kansans; and there isn’t even partisan consensus that these actions are necessary.

Election security is of utmost importance, but our elections are secure and getting more so every year. The US Department of Homeland Security continuously strengthens our election infrastructure ensuring our protection.

These bills only make it harder for eligible Kansans to have their ballot counted.

Free and fair access to the ballot is what allows citizens to have a voice in their government. It is a vital element of democracy.

Kansans should be concerned that the state legislature is actively trying to suppress that voice.

INSIGHT KS: Bills restricting ballot collection unpopular with Kansans

In 1849, Zachary Taylor was inaugurated as the 12th president of the United States. (The swearing-in was delayed by a day because March 4 fell on a Sunday.)

Los Angeles police arrested Terry Bryant, 47, on charges that he stole Frances McDormand's Oscar trophy after the Academy Awards a night earlier; the award was returned to the actress. (Charges against Bryant would later be dismissed.) The Nielsen company announced that the Academy Awards viewership had plunged to a record low of 26.5 million, down 20 percent from a year earlier.

One year ago: A promised cease-fire in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol collapsed amid scenes of terror in the besieged town. Paige&nbsp;Baird&nbsp;is the first recipient of the Eric Stein Scholarship at Kansas Wesleyan University, as announced last month at the Salina Strings Day event.

A viola player from Salina South High School,&nbsp;Baird&nbsp;holds the first viola chair in&nbsp;her school orchestra and in the Salina Youth Symphony Orchestra.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“She is a leader and will be a great addition to the Department of Music,” said Leonardo Rosario, director of the strings program at Kansas Wesleyan.&nbsp;

The scholarship was set up this past year to honor the late Eric Stein, who founded the Salina Symphony and was a longtime instructor at Marymount College. It is available to&nbsp;new KWU students coming from Saline County schools and will cover 85 percent of&nbsp;Baird's tuition at Kansas Wesleyan. &nbsp;

“This scholarship shows the commitment of the university in developing the strings area and Music Department,” said James McAllister, chair of the department. “It honors the legacy of Eric Stein, who was instrumental in establishing a tradition of music in Salina.”&nbsp;

Baird&nbsp;was selected by the KWU music faculty after auditioning.

Comprehensive Pain Solutions closing April 3

DECATUR, Ill. - Whitney Turner of Salina has made the Dean's List for Fall 2022 at Millikin University.

Students who attempt 12 graded credits during a fall or spring semester and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher earn Dean's List honors. Students earning a perfect 4.00 grade point average on 12 graded credits attempted earn High Dean's List honors.
