Rolling Hills Zoo welcomed its two millionth visitor through the gates early Sunday afternoon, as Ryan VanZant, the zoo’s executive director, shared the exciting news with Richard Craft, an unsuspecting Fort Hays State student.

Joining him for a visit to the zoo were his girlfriend, Karah Strecker; mother, Rose Marie Craft; sister, Rachel Hale and 2-year-old niece, Grace Lynn Hale. Since Craft’s family lives in Newton, they decided to meet at Rolling Hills Zoo on Sunday “just to get out and enjoy a nice spring day,” he said.

Not a newcomer to Rolling Hills Zoo, this is actually Craft’s third visit to the zoo, as he told zoo officials “I just really enjoy looking at all of the animals. They are pretty cool.”

Craft also loves the zoo’s new Pride of the Prairie exhibit and seeing the lions. And then of course there is the ice cream served at the Overlook Restaurant, another one of his favorite things at the zoo.

As the zoo’s two millionth visitor, Craft received a gift basket valued at more than $575, including a Rolling Hills Zoo family membership, a $200 RHZ gift certificate, and a private golf cart tour of the zoo.

“Thank you! I am beyond lucky to be the two millionth guest,” Craft said, once he had a chance to soak in this unexpected, but very pleasant surprise.

Rolling Hills Zoo will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary in October 2024, at which time it will be on its way to the 2.5 millionth visitor.

Registration is now open for CPR, AED, and first aid classes at Salina Family Healthcare Center (SFHC).

"I took a call late last year asking if our clinic provided community CPR classes. Historically, we’ve only provided CPR classes to our employees. I asked around and the idea really took off on its own," said Genell Heimer, SFHC outreach supervisor.

The first Heartsaver class is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at SFHC, 651 E. Prescott Road. Participants will receive a two-year certification after completing the course. The cost of the Heartsaver class is $75.

"We are really excited to offer both Basic Life Support for healthcare providers and Heartsaver CPR classes for anyone who doesn’t work in healthcare," Heimer said. "Most cardiac arrests occur outside of healthcare settings and quality CPR is the single most valuable action someone can take to save a life before medical help arrives."

Each class will review adult and pediatric CPR, how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and basic first aid training. The instructors are certified through the American Heart Association.

Additionally, a class will be offered for persons aged 12-18 from 2-6 p.m. on May 25. The class is recommended for teens who have plans to babysit, work as camp counselors, or coach/officiate sports.

To register for one of the classes, call the SFHC Outreach Department at 785-825-7251, ext 642. Employers are encouraged to call the Outreach Department to inquire about group classes provided at work locations.

A Salina woman received multiple citations after she allegedly hit a parked car not once, but twice, while driving in the western part of the city Saturday morning.

Aaliyah Rosalea, 22, of Salina, was northbound in the 1600 block of Dover Circle in a 2009 Ford Focus when she allegedly struck a southbound facing parked 2010 Ford Fusion, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. She then allegedly made a U-turn and struck the Fusion again.

The incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday.

A short time later, officers located the Focus in the 1400 block of Teakwood Street, Forrester said. It had front-end and rear passenger-side damage.

Forrester said Rosalea was cited for the following.

One location is the parking lot on the north side of The Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

"At the south end of the downtown project, The Temple parking lot is in poor condition and does not reflect the improved downtown infrastructure along Santa Fe Avenue," according to the study session information packet.

Suggested changes would include a redesign that would reflect the functionality and aesthetics in other recent downtown parking lot projects, including those on Fifth Street and the City Lights Stage lot at N. Santa Fe Avenue and W. Ash Street. Such changes would include new concrete entrances and sidewalk repairs, as well as landscaping and pavement surface replacement and markings.

The City Lights Stage parking lot also is on the list. According to the study session information packet, the goal of this project is to "provide a cost-effective, multi-purpose, shaded spectator viewing area and covered parking for the City Lights Stage and parking lot using fabric canopy shade sails and/or cantilever systems."

Information about including solar panels and two car chargers also is included.

Also included in the study session will be information about creating a way for city staff to remotely access the lighting controls for the downtown overhead structures.

The regular Salina City Commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Commissioners are scheduled to consider a request to proclaim the month of May 2023 as National Bike Month in the City of Salina. Trell Grinter, OCCK Transportation director, is scheduled to read the proclamation.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to consider a request from the Salina Fire Department to purchase an emergency medical supply vending system and a 36-door locker assembly from Vend Novation LLC for $37,845.

The fire department has used a similar VendNovation system for more than 10 years, and the current system has "exceeded its useful life and is unreliable.

"Replacement parts for the current system, if even available are typically back ordered as the system has become outdated," the fire department noted in its request.

The requested 36-door locker assembly would replace a set of wooden supply cabinets that are approximately 10 years old and are in "well used condition," the fire department noted.

The locker assembly would cost an additional $12,000.

Other items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday include the following.

●Consider approving a proposed resolution supporting a request from the State Historic Preservation Office for comments on the eligibility of Kansas Wesleyan University's Peters Science Hall for potential listing on the National Register of Historic Places and the Register of Historic Kansas Places.

●Consider accepting offered street right-of-way and easement dedications from Overlook Estates, LLC, to serve the Overlook Estates Addition, a proposed 11-lot subdivision on a 52.9-acre tract of land located south of River Run Addition and west of Great Life Golf and Fitness.

Commissioners also are scheduled to meet in executive session to discuss legal considerations relating to the pending case of Tim LePage vs. City of Salina and Larry Mullikin, with legal counsel Terelle Mock of Fisher, Patterson, Sayler &amp; Smith law firm. LePage is the former Salina Fire Department captain who brought to light the alleged misuse of leave time by some members of the department. A later forensic audit found that some Chiefs of Staff took time off without applying it to vacation.

Salina City Commission to look at parking lot improvement options

On Saturday, four South High School (SHS) seniors will be a part of Kansas State University Salina’s commencement ceremony and on May 14, they will be at SHS’s graduation. All four will earn associate degrees while in high school. 

●Adrian Aranda- applied business associate degree

●Roman Dalme- electronic and computer engineering technology associate degree

●Isaac Martinez- applied business associate degree

●Aidan Sankey- web development technology associate degree

Aranda, Dalme, Martinez and Sankey are the first four Salina Public Schools (SPS) students to graduate with both credentials. “These four exemplary students show how a robust individual plan of study and hard work can lead to affordable success while in high school,” said Curtis Stevens, director of secondary education.

The associate degrees will be earned through the PolyCATS Academy, a partnership program between SPS and K-State Salina that offers industry-recognized credentials, college credit for general education requirements and dual credits for an associate degree during high school. The cost of credits, when taken through PolyCATS Academy during high school, is reduced.

The experience has been a good one. “This degree is a stepping stone to my future because I am planning on going to college to get my bachelor’s degree,” said Martinez. “Earning this degree has prepared me for college classes, and it has saved me two years of deciding on what I am going to major in.” Martinez will earn his applied business associate degree.

Sankey, who will earn the Web Development Technology Associate Degree, explained, “I think it’s great to earn a degree when I’m still in high school. It makes me passionate to go to class every day since I know the courses I’m taking have bearing on my future career.”

In addition to the degree, Sankey accomplished personal growth as well. “I have become more organized and more aware of my time management,” reported Sankey. “Most of my courses are creating different projects, with or without a team. This process requires timelines and benchmarks of when I should have certain pieces finished. It is remarkable how much planning goes into each project.”&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; 

Aranda, who will earn he Applied Business Associate Degree, had a similar experience. “I’ve shown personal growth by keeping myself accountable to complete the work and staying dedicated to my studies while still putting effort and attention to everything else going on in my life.”

Dalme, driven by the chance to accelerate his plans, will earn his associate degree in electronic computer engineering technology. “What motivated me was the chance to be two years ahead and to take classes I am more interested in,” he explained. “The degree puts me two years closer to my bachelor’s degree in electronic and computer engineering and will help me get a career as a circuit board drafter.”

“We are so excited,” said Rosalie Bonilla, Dalme’s mother. “If anybody could do it, I knew it would be him.” His parents learned about the opportunity to earn an associate degree at a meeting with Dr. Curtis Stevens about the PolyCATS Academy

“Creating opportunities that help set our students up for success in life after high school is a priority at SPS,” said Linn Exline, USD 305 superintendent. “We remain focused on college and career readiness for all of our students.” 

Postsecondary experiences continue to grow at SPS. In the 2022-2023 school year, more than 85 industry-recognized credentials were offered to SPS students through Salina Area Technical College and Kansas State University’s Salina campus. More than 200 SPS high school students enrolled in at least one dual credit college class and 1,890 enrolled in at least one technical or application level CTE class.

All four students agree it was a great experience. What advice would they offer to their peers? 

“I would tell the student to definitely take the opportunity,” said Aranda. “Not only is the cost much cheaper, but you also get a head start on your career, and you make great relationships with educators and other students.”

Martinez encourages others to take advantage of the opportunity. 

“College classes are not as intimidating as most people think,” said Martinez. “The professors are very nice and willing to help you if you have questions on anything so don't be afraid to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Bonilla is planning a dual graduation party for her son, to celebrate the graduations from K-State Salina and SHS. 

“We’re very proud of him,” she explained. “We’re having to explain this accomplishment to a lot of people who just don’t know this opportunity is available.”

Salina Public Schools is working to raise awareness of postsecondary opportunities. A meeting was held in early April with a gathering of more than 30 people that included seventh and eighth grade students and their parents or guardians.

“I would tell a student that taking college courses isn’t an easy road, but it’s an excellent opportunity,” said Sankey. 

He acknowledges that the homework load is higher than a regular high school class and that it can be stressful at times. 

“Still, I’ve had a great time and I do really recommend taking these courses if you’re a person interested in further education,” he said.

Salina South students earning associate degrees and HS diplomas

A teenage girl was able to escape from a man who allegedly attempted to kidnap her as she checked out at an east Salina grocery store Friday night.

The 17-year-old girl had just finished her shift at Dillons, 1235 E. Cloud Street, and was purchasing an item at the self-checkout when a man approached her, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The man allegedly displayed a large knife in a sheath on his belt and then pulled the knife out partway.

The man allegedly then grabbed the girl's hand and attempted to get her out of the store, Forrester said. She was able to slip out of his grasp and run from him.

The girl went to another store employee who called police.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:10 p.m. Friday.

The man was described as a white male wearing a blue stocking cap, blue jeans, and white shoes. He was last seen pushing a gray bicycle away from the store.

Forrester said police believe they have identified the man, but have not yet made an arrest.

'The Things They Carried: Vietnam Veteran Panel'

Our active duty U.S. Air Force needed 26,877 new airmen this last fiscal year. They only recruited 11,200. As a result, the Air Force Recruiting Service announced in early April that they have raised the maximum body fat for males from 20 to 26 percent, and for females from 28 to 36 percent.&nbsp; While the prior levels were within normal range, the new upper limits now allow in individuals who are obese as defined by the American Council on Exercise and graphed on a Body Mass Index.

Indeed, all branches of service face this problem. An earlier Johns Hopkins University study found over half of 18-to-25 year olds were overweight or obese. The percent in this age range who were of normal weight dropped from near 70 percent in 1976 to 34 percent in 2018. According to the CIA, only a handful of small Pacific island nations exceed the U.S. in rates of obesity.

But what exactly is a Body Mass Index and how are “overweight” and “obese” scientifically defined?

The concept was developed by Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet (1796–1874), a Belgian mathematician who applied science to social conditions in a field he called “social physics.” It was obvious to him that a short person who was a certain weight could be fat while another much taller person with that same weight would be underweight. He therefore produced the Quetelet Index based on “'the weight increases as the square of the height.” It is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters (or weight in pounds by height in feet, in backwards America). Therefore, a person who weighs 150 pounds is underweight if six-and-a-half feet tall, of normal weight if 5 feet, 11 inches tall, and overweight if 4 feet, 11 inches tall.

If this math formula calculates you as under 18.5, you are underweight. A figure from 18.5 to 25 is a normal range. Overweight scores are from 25-30. But over 30 is obese. Quetelet merely used this early calculation as a descriptor. He did not make any medical proclamations.

Modern use of the term BMI and its connections with health was addressed by Ancel Keys (1904-2004) and colleagues in a 1972 article in the “Journal of Chronic Diseases.” Keys was a pioneer researcher who discovered that different kinds of fats had different effects on human health.

Earlier in his life, Keys had been drawn into the development of military rations that could be stored and distributed during warfare. He secured the initial ingredients from a local Minneapolis grocery store and produced a preserved meal that weighed only 28 ounces but held 3200 calories. Ingredients included dried biscuits and sausage, hard candy and chocolate. It became known as “K-rations.” The Cracker Jack company provided the packaging. Similar to MREs (meals ready to eat) today, this became a mainstay of military life in the field. Keys would also promote what is today called the Mediterranean diet. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Keys found the Body Mass Index important in dietary medicine, and “...at least as good as any other relative weight index as an indicator of relative obesity.” He also was very concerned with the aftermath of warfare that left many civilians starving. The BMI was an important part of his research into how the body responds when daily food intake drops far below what is normal for maintaining normal weight. His work with colleagues produced a classical two-volume study on “The Biology of Human Starvation” in 1950 and contributed to refining the “set point” theory.

But starvation is not the problem that the U.S. is now facing. A growing number of our children lack regular exercise. This is made worse by their sedentary attention to smartphones, hand-held games and laptops. Overall reduced activity levels became worse during the pandemic although the majority of our next generation were already overweight or obese.

The U.S. is likewise the only developed country that has not turned around the recent temporary decline in life expectancy caused by the pandemic.  </figure>By JOHN RICHARD SCHROCKOur active duty U.S. Air Force needed 26,877 new airmen this last fiscal year. They only recruited 11,200. As a result, the Air Force Recruiting Service announced in early April that they have raised the maximum body fat for males from 20 to 26 percent, and for females from 28 to 36 percent.&nbsp; While the prior levels were within normal range, the new upper limits now allow in individuals who are obese as defined by the American Council on Exercise and graphed on a Body Mass Index. Indeed, all branches of service face this problem. An earlier Johns Hopkins University study found over half of 18-to-25 year olds were overweight or obese. The percent in this age range who were of normal weight dropped from near 70 percent in 1976 to 34 percent in 2018. According to the CIA, only a handful of small Pacific island nations exceed the U.S. in rates of obesity. But what exactly is a Body Mass Index and how are “overweight” and “obese” scientifically defined? The concept was developed by Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet (1796–1874), a Belgian mathematician who applied science to social conditions in a field he called “social physics.” It was obvious to him that a short person who was a certain weight could be fat while another much taller person with that same weight would be underweight. He therefore produced the Quetelet Index based on “'the weight increases as the square of the height.” It is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters (or weight in pounds by height in feet, in backwards America). Therefore, a person who weighs 150 pounds is underweight if six-and-a-half feet tall, of normal weight if 5 feet, 11 inches tall, and overweight if 4 feet, 11 inches tall. If this math formula calculates you as under 18.5, you are underweight. A figure from 18.5 to 25 is a normal range. Overweight scores are from 25-30. But over 30 is obese. Quetelet merely used this early calculation as a descriptor. He did not make any medical proclamations. Modern use of the term BMI and its connections with health was addressed by Ancel Keys (1904-2004) and colleagues in a 1972 article in the “Journal of Chronic Diseases.” Keys was a pioneer researcher who discovered that different kinds of fats had different effects on human health. Earlier in his life, Keys had been drawn into the development of military rations that could be stored and distributed during warfare. He secured the initial ingredients from a local Minneapolis grocery store and produced a preserved meal that weighed only 28 ounces but held 3200 calories. Ingredients included dried biscuits and sausage, hard candy and chocolate. It became known as “K-rations.” The Cracker Jack company provided the packaging. Similar to MREs (meals ready to eat) today, this became a mainstay of military life in the field. Keys would also promote what is today called the Mediterranean diet. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Keys found the Body Mass Index important in dietary medicine, and “...at least as good as any other relative weight index as an indicator of relative obesity.” He also was very concerned with the aftermath of warfare that left many civilians starving. The BMI was an important part of his research into how the body responds when daily food intake drops far below what is normal for maintaining normal weight. His work with colleagues produced a classical two-volume study on “The Biology of Human Starvation” in 1950 and contributed to refining the “set point” theory. But starvation is not the problem that the U.S. is now facing. A growing number of our children lack regular exercise. This is made worse by their sedentary attention to smartphones, hand-held games and laptops. Overall reduced activity levels became worse during the pandemic although the majority of our next generation were already overweight or obese. The U.S. is likewise the only developed country that has not turned around the recent temporary decline in life expectancy caused by the pandemic. Jacky Hunt-Broersma, A South African amputee athlete, set a new world record for the number of daily consecutive marathons by running her 104th in a row. A woman was rescued from the rubble of a building in central China more than 50 hours after it collapsed, leaving dozens trapped or missing.

Today in History - May 1

HAYS – In a packed conference room on the campus of Fort Hays State University, 12 College of Education students were recognized for their commitment to teaching science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) in a rural setting. The students are all participants in a National Science Foundation-sponsored program named in honor of Robert Norton Noyce, a technology innovator known as the “Mayor of Silicon Valley” for his contributions to the development of the monolithic integrated circuits or microchips that power modern personal computers.

Students who enroll in the program receive $14,591 annually in financial support from the National Science Foundation. Noyce Scholars also build a professional network by participating in campus activities and attending conferences and workshops off-campus throughout their undergraduate years. The scholarship was designed to help future STEM teachers succeed in small, rural schools.

Brother and sister Emma and Tyler Reif are new Noyce Scholars from Hoisington and transfer students from Barton Community College. Emma credits Barton instructor and STEM champion Charlotte Cates with inspiring her to pursue teaching and the field of mathematics. Originally, she considered teaching at the high school level but now is focused on teaching in a rural middle school where she thinks she can have the most impact. She plans to complete her student teaching capstone experience this fall.

Tyler Reif was inspired by Barton Community College Chemistry professor Amanda Alliband to change his initial focus from history to chemistry.

“Dr. Alliband and Dr. Arvin Cruz at FHSU are great champions of STEM. They helped me solidify my interest in moving over to chemistry,”Reif said. “I’ve always loved history, but last October, I decided chemistry was where I needed to be.”

Also in attendance at the event were new participants in the most recent Noyce Scholars program-a one year post-baccalaureate program designed to transition those who have earned their bachelor’s degree in a STEM field into a career as secondary STEM teachers in rural schools. This new program, announced during a press conference last fall at Fort Hays State University, provides a stipend of approximately $22,000 to help ease the financial burden of the transition and allow these Noyce Scholars the flexibility to focus on their studies if they wish.

FHSU senior and new Post-Baccalaureate Noyce Scholar, Hannah Burks, grew up in the small rural town of Beloit. Her interest in teaching and living in a small town began at a very young age.

“My dad was a very busy as a teacher, administrator, and coach, but he always found time to walk me to school every day. I’ll never forget this experience, and it kind of showed me how great life can be in a small town,” Hannah said. In June, Hannah plans to marry a fellow FHSU alumnus currently teaching in rural Ellsworth County. She is thankful for the stipend that she and her future husband will put toward the wedding and getting started on their lives together.
