DENVER (AP) — A judge sentenced a woman convicted of killing her 11-year-old stepson in Colorado and dumping his body over a bridge in Florida to life in prison without parole on Monday, calling her claim that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stepson-stepmother-killing-colorado-suitcase-florida-aa2e46edd072ccd98036479f8644e490">she was insane</a>&nbsp;and that one of her other personalities killed him a disservice to those who are mentally ill.

Earlier in the day, jurors found Letecia Stauch guilty of first-degree murder and other charges she faced in Gannon Stauch’s killing over three years ago. Prosecutors said she stabbed Gannon 18 times as he tried to fight her off before hitting him in the head and then shooting him once.

Prosecutors claimed Stauch killed the boy in January 2020 because she hated him and wanted to hurt his father, Al Stauch, whom she planned to leave and who was away on a National Guard deployment at the time. They said she then put his body in a suitcase and drove over 1,300 miles with it in a rented van.

Authorities arrested Stauch in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on March 2, 2022. She was held in the Saline County, Kansas jail on her return to Colorado.

Judge Gregory Werner said Stauch was also motivated by “hatred and jealousy” of Gannon’s mother, Landen Bullard, and resentful of being left to take care of Gannon and his younger sister.

Unlike other defendants with mental health problems, Werner said Stauch was never surprised by what her alleged other personality did but instead took conscious steps to cover up her actions.

“There is no time during the minutes, hours and days following the murder where Letecia came out and wondered 'Gee, why am I carrying a body around a body in my luggage?' That just isn't credible," he said.

Al Stauch broke down in court while addressing Gannon, saying he would never would have thought he was leaving him with his “murderer." Both he and Bullard recalled how their severely premature son weighed about a pound and a half when he was born, able to fit into the palms of his dad’s hands, but proved to be a survivor.

“You came into this world fighting. Unfortunately, you left this world fighting,” Bullard said.

Stauch did not deny killing Gannon, but she pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The defense argued that she killed Gannon during a “psychotic break" caused by trauma from being physically, emotionally and sexually abused during her childhood.

Experts at the state mental hospital concluded that Stauch had a personality disorder with borderline and narcissistic features but was sane at the time Gannon was killed. Under Colorado law, that means understanding the difference between right and wrong and being able to form the intent to commit a crime.

The main defense witness, Dr. Dorothy Lewis, author of the book “Crazy, Not Insane” and featured in an HBO documentary with the same title, concluded Stauch suffered from dissociative identity disorder — when someone has two or more personalities as the result of trauma — and was not sane at the time Gannon was killed.

In the weeks leading up to Gannon's killing, Stauch was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder after she was referred to a psychologist while being treated military health clinic. Therapist Ronda Niederhauser testified that Stauch did not show any signs of being a threat to herself or others and was aware of her surroundings.

Authorities believe Stauch killed Gannon in his bedroom a few hours before reporting him missing on Jan. 27, 2020, saying he had not come home from playing with friends. Dozens of volunteers helped search for the boy in the area around where the family lived near Colorado Springs. However, investigators later revealed that Stauch concocted a variety of stories to mislead them, including that a man she hired to repair a carpet raped her and then abducted Gannon.

After Al Stauch became suspicious of his wife, he allowed the FBI to listen in on his phone calls with Stauch, trying to draw out more information from her about where Gannon was. Hours of audio from those calls along with video recordings of interviews with Stauch about her mental health were a prominent part of the evidence offered during the five-week trial.

Gannon’s body was found in a suitcase below a bridge on the Florida Pandhandle during an inspection done twice a year in what prosecutors called “divine intervention.”

Stauch was convicted of first-degree murder after deliberation, first-degree murder of a child by a person in a position of trust, tampering with a deceased human body and tampering with physical evidence.

She did not appear to show any reaction to the verdict as it was read, sitting at the defense table between her two lawyers, or as Al Stauch, Bullard and others spoke to the judge about how Gannon's killing had hurt them.

An e-ticketing application, budget requests, and a jail project update are among the items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

E-ticketing, budget requests, jail project update on Saline County agenda

What makes someone a "good" storyteller? Is it the vast and interesting vocabulary they use? What about the style of story they tell? Or is it their ability to wrap up a story by neatly connecting multiple themes into one concise narrative?

According to Kansas Storytelling Festival storyteller, Mo Reynolds, there is no gatekeeping when it comes to storytelling - anyone can tell a story.

On this episode of King in the Community, Reynolds talks about the way she got started telling stories, her first experience attending the <a href="https://www.kansasstorytellingfestival.com/">annual Kansas Storytelling Festival</a>&nbsp;in Downs, and her storytelling visits to regional grade schools in April.&nbsp;

"Storytelling festivals are a beautiful place of community and connection. A lot of times storytelling festivals will have a set of storytellers that will each do like a 15 to maybe 20 minute story. But this is a different kind of festival," Reynolds said. "I'll have a 45 minute block. So you'll be able to see different tellers, and they have a really nice, stretch of time to take you on a ride. And so I was really wanting to write this experience in kind of a cool fluid way, and wrap it up with some other stories. So I was really thankful for how Kansas has it set up because it gave me that challenge and opportunity."

The Kansas Storytelling Festival is made possible each year by a dedicated group of volunteers who coordinate the event, the entertainment, and the business of the Kansas Storytelling Festival. The committee functions underneath the guidance of the Downs Arts Council Board. Former Kansas Governor Bill Graves officially recognized Downs in 1998 as "The Storytelling Capital of Kansas," and has proclaimed the last week of April as "The Kansas Storytelling Festival."&nbsp;

Each year storytellers from all across the country gather in Downs to showcase their talents and share their stories.&nbsp;

DICKINSON COUNTY –&nbsp; On Monday, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Herington man on a warrant, according to a media release from the agency.

Russell L. Thomas, 61, of Herington, was arrested on requested charges that include three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and misdemeanor battery. 

The arrest occurred at 9:50 a.m. at 434 Union Road. in Herington, Kansas, according to the KBI.&nbsp;Thomas is a middle school science teacher at Herington USD 487, <a href="https://www.heringtonschools.org/staff?search=Thomas">according to the district web site.</a>

Agents arrested Thomas in April for aggravated intimidation of a witness connected to the investigation. He was released after bond was posted.

Following Monday’s arrest, Thomas was booked into the Dickinson County Jail.&nbsp;

Two people from Hutchinson got more than they bargained for when they attempted to give an acquaintance a ride in Salina early Friday morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Beverly Drive at 2:30 a.m. Friday for the report of a disturbance.

Two people from Hutchinson, a 27-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were giving a ride to Michael J. Whitford, 29, of Salina. They were in the vicinity of Centennial Road and W. Crawford Street when a verbal altercation ensued. 

Forrester said that Whitford was sitting behind the woman, who was in the front passenger seat. Whitford allegedly punched the woman in the face and then wrapped his arm around the woman's neck and began strangling her. The driver grabbed Whitford's arm and the woman was able to jump out of the vehicle in the 1600 block of Beverly Drive.

Whitford then allegedly pulled a knife on the driver and told him to drive away, Forrester said. The driver let Whitford out in the 800 block of Vassar Drive.

At approximately 1 p.m. Friday, officers were sent to the 400 block of S. 12th Street for the report of Whitford being in the area. They found him walking northbound on S. 11th Street near W. South Street and took him into custody without incident, Forrester said.

Whitford was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Salina man arrested after allegedly strangling woman, kidnapping man

LINDSBORG - Works by Clarke, Faure, and Beethoven will be featured during the Chamber Orchestra of the Smoky Valley's final concert of the season.

The concert is scheduled for 4 p.m. May 14 in Bethany Lutheran Church, 320 N. Main Street, in Lindsborg, and is open to the public at no charge.

The chamber orchestra is a unique, auditioned regional ensemble of professional musicians supported by Bethany College and the Lindsborg Arts Council. 

"The ensemble includes Bethany faculty members and players from Wichita, Manhattan, Salina, Lawrence, and Kansas City. Under the musical direction of Keith Dodson, assistant professor of music and director of instrumental studies, the COSV seeks to educate and engage audience members through the performance of orchestral masterworks," Bethany College noted in a news release.

Concertmaster Ann Samuelson will lead the concert. Samuelson is a retired instructor of music in violin/viola and piano proficiency at Bethany College. She also is a member of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and maintains a private studio. The chamber orchestra also features Nancy Johnson, Boris Vayner, Meagan Dodson, Andrew Book, Colleen White, Alyssa Morris, Amy Guffey, Susan Gustavson Maxwell, Meri Jenkins, Larry Dean, Daniel Hinman, and Kurt Gartner.

Chamber Orchestra of the Smoky Valley to conclude season May 14

A Salina man faces aggravated battery and aggravated endangering a child charges after an incident on Interstate 70 just east of the N. Ohio Street exit Sunday afternoon.

Jeremiah John Bastin, 40, of Salina, was driving westbound on I-70 with his wife and three children when he and his wife allegedly got into an argument, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. While the vehicle was traveling at approximately 50 mph, Bastin allegedly pushed his wife out of the car. She was caught in the seatbelt and drug along for a while, he said.

Bastin then stopped the car and allegedly made his wife's two children, an 11-year-old girl and a nine-year-old girl, get out of the car and left them on the shoulder of the interstate, taking off with his two-year-old son, Soldan said.

The incident, which was witnessed by several people, occurred at approximately 4:57 p.m. Sunday near milepost 254, just east of the N. Ohio Street exit.

Bastin was later found and taken into custody at his residence in the 1900 block of Haskett Avenue, Soldan said.

Bastin was arrested on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

The woman sustained road rash, but otherwise was not injured, Soldan said.

Salina man arrested after allegedly pushing wife out of vehicle on I-70

A Salina man was arrested on requested attempted murder charges after an incident at a local gentlemen's club early Saturday morning.

Deputies were sent to the Shady Lady, 1540 W. Old Highway 40, at 1:49 a.m. Saturday for the report of people being shot, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. When they arrived, they found near the entrance a 25-year-old man and a 31-year-old man with gunshot wounds.

Both men were transported to Salina Regional Health Center before one was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita and the other to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Soldan said.

A third shooting victim who also had been near the entrance, a 23-year-old man, had already been dropped off at Salina Regional by his friend, Dyeon Presley, 23, of Salina, who sheriff's office personnel believed was the alleged shooter. The 23-year-old man who was shot was treated and released at Salina Regional, Soldan said.

"Apparently the bouncers were trying to get people out of the club at the end of the night. Somebody bumped into his (Presley's) girlfriend who was with him and said something that he took offense to, and they exchanged words and he just started shooting at him at the front door of the club," Soldan said. 

The 25-year-old and the 31-year-old were next to a bouncer when they were shot, Soldan said.

Later on Saturday, at approximately 10 a.m., deputies served a search warrant at Presley's residence in the 2200 block of Roach Street to look for evidence in the case. After they had secured the residence and had begun searching it, Presley showed up on the porch looking for his girlfriend, Soldan said.

Presley was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Soldan.

●Criminal discharge of a firearm in an occupied building

Additionally, they are to consider approving the complete refurbishment and remounting of the ambulance patient module from an existing Salina Fire Department ambulance to the new Ford F550 ambulance chassis.

In its request for action, the fire department noted that by refurbishing a current ambulance patient module and mounting it on the new chassis, it would essentially get a new ambulance at a savings of 30 percent over a new build custom ambulance. 

Other items on the city commission agenda for Monday include the following.

●Consider approving a proposed resolution that would authorize the mayor to sign a vault closure agreement for an underground sidewalk vault located at 401 W. Iron Avenue. Additionally, the commission is to consider authorizing the city manager to sign an addendum to the city's storm sewer repair construction contract with Smoky Hill, LLC, of Salina and approve an additional 20 percent ($30,547.62) construction contingency for the city's storm sewer repair project.

●Consider providing policy direction on allowing access to the utility easement area for fiber, utility, and other service providers.

●Consider authorizing the city manager to execute a License (Right-of-Way User's) Agreement with Nex-Tech, LLC, to allow the installation of fiber optic and related facilities within the public rights-of-way and utility easements in the City of Salina for both commercial and residential services.

●Consider approving a proposed resolution authorizing staff to submit an application on behalf of eligible local recipient agencies for the 2023 Kansas Emergency Solutions Grant Program. Those local agencies are Ashby House, DVACK, and Salina Grace. A total of $418,700 will be requested in the application, with each agency requesting the following amounts, according to information in the commission meeting packet.

Salina commission to consider request for ambulance equipment

Students at&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;have elected new&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/student-life/clubs-organizations/student-governing-association/" target="_blank">Student Governing Association</a>&nbsp;leadership for the 2023-2024 school year. The new K-State Salina Student Governing Association, or SGA, student body president is&nbsp;Cassy Girard, junior in electronic computer engineering technology,&nbsp;New York City,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the new vice president is&nbsp;Roxana Linares, junior in professional pilot,&nbsp;Arkansas City. Both Girard and Linares have extensive experience in student leadership and listen to their peers about what issues need to be addressed. Both have been involved in K-State Salina's SGA for more than a year, during which time&nbsp;Girard&nbsp;has served as&nbsp;the secretary&nbsp;and&nbsp;Linares&nbsp;has been&nbsp;the director of diversity affairs&nbsp;for the organization. Part of the duo's plan revolves&nbsp;around improving the information flow of activities and other events to students on campus. This would include informing students on the campus of the support that SGA can provide. "Our goal is to continue the process of bettering the communication between the students and administration on campus,"&nbsp;Girard said.&nbsp;"We want to see more students continuing to get involved and having&nbsp;a stake in what happens here." Ultimately, being an advocate for their fellow students and helping them make K-State Salina feel like an inclusive community is what drives both Girard and Linares to take the time to lead and foster new ideas for the campus. "We are eager to represent our fellow students,"&nbsp;said Linares.&nbsp;"We will look to have a lot of discussions around getting the right students involved in SGA and making sure that our time goes to improving the student experience on campus." The Student Governing Association represents full-time and part-time undergraduate students at K-State Salina. The group consists of a cabinet and senators who discuss and vote on issues important to the campus's student body. The student-run organization meets weekly and encourages attendance from any student, faculty or staff member. The new K-State Salina Student Governing Association, or SGA, student body president is&nbsp;Cassy Girard, junior in electronic computer engineering technology,&nbsp;New York City,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the new vice president is&nbsp;Roxana Linares, junior in professional pilot,&nbsp;Arkansas City. Both Girard and Linares have extensive experience in student leadership and listen to their peers about what issues need to be addressed. Both have been involved in K-State Salina's SGA for more than a year, during which time&nbsp;Girard&nbsp;has served as&nbsp;the secretary&nbsp;and&nbsp;Linares&nbsp;has been&nbsp;the director of diversity affairs&nbsp;for the organization. Part of the duo's plan revolves&nbsp;around improving the information flow of activities and other events to students on campus. This would include informing students on the campus of the support that SGA can provide. "Our goal is to continue the process of bettering the communication between the students and administration on campus,"&nbsp;Girard said.&nbsp;"We want to see more students continuing to get involved and having&nbsp;a stake in what happens here." Ultimately, being an advocate for their fellow students and helping them make K-State Salina feel like an inclusive community is what drives both Girard and Linares to take the time to lead and foster new ideas for the campus. "We are eager to represent our fellow students,"&nbsp;said Linares.&nbsp;"We will look to have a lot of discussions around getting the right students involved in SGA and making sure that our time goes to improving the student experience on campus." The Student Governing Association represents full-time and part-time undergraduate students at K-State Salina. The group consists of a cabinet and senators who discuss and vote on issues important to the campus's student body. The student-run organization meets weekly and encourages attendance from any student, faculty or staff member. ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) wore blue jeans at work for another Jeans Day fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of April. 

Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. 

A total donation of $870 was presented to Denise Jackson. Jackson has been an LPN for 40 years working in Dickinson County and is battling Stage 4 melanoma. 

The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.&nbsp;

Eggs, milk and meat are important to provide the range of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, and especially micro-nutrients that are hard to find in plants in the quantity and quality needed by populations in developing countries.

This was the message in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) just-released 295-page report: “Contribution of terrestrial animal source food to healthy diets for improved nutrition and health outcomes–An evidence and policy overview on the state of knowledge and gaps.”

This analysis of risks and benefits of consuming animal-source foods examined data in over 500 published science papers and 250 policy documents. This comes as no surprise to biologists who are aware of our evolution as “omnivores.” From teeth to digestive tract, our anatomy and physiology reflect our long history of eating both plant and animal tissues. &nbsp;

Individuals who only eat vegan require supplements that are not economical in the developing world. This FAO report finds that high quality protein, some essential fatty-acids, Vitamin B12, iron, calcium, zinc, selenium, choline as well as bioactive compounds (creatine, carnitine, taurine) are economically provided by farm and other livestock animals. &nbsp;

The report notes: “Livestock species are adapted to a wide range of environments, including areas that are unsuitable for crop production. Globally, more than a billion people depend on livestock value chains for their livelihoods... Rangeland or grassland ecosystems occupy some 40 percent of the world’s terrestrial area. Livestock keepers raise grazing animals to transform grassland vegetation into food.”

Strong evidence supports the benefits of milk and dairy products. “Milk and dairy consumption during pregnancy promotes healthy weight of infants at birth and may also benefit birth length and foetal head circumference... Evidence shows that consumption of milk and dairy products by school-age children and adolescents increases height and reduces overweight and obesity. Beef consumption in school-age children may improve cognitive outcomes. In adults, there is evidence showing that milk and yoghurt consumption reduces risk of all-cause mortality, hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, obesity, osteoporosis and fractures.”&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

“Evidence also shows that egg consumption in adults does not increase risk of stroke or coronary heart disease....”

The FAO report provides 378 recommendations on terrestrial animal source food consumption following a “life-course” approach noting differences across “five life-course phases: women during pregnancy and lactation; infants and young children; school-age children and adolescents; adults and older adults.” Considerable research points to negative effects of highly processed meat products.

But, “if consumed as part of an appropriate diet, animal source foods can help with meeting the nutrition targets endorsed by the World Health Assembly and Sustainable Development Goals related to reducing stunting, wasting among children under five, low birthweight, anaemia in women of reproductive age, and obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in adults.”

The report documents the extreme ranges in food availability. An average person in Burundi consumes 3 kilograms of meat a year while a person in Hong Kong consumes 136 kilograms. Average per person consumption of milk in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is only 160 grams, while an average Montenegro resident consumes 338 kilograms.

However, in a foreword to this report, the FAO Deputy Director-General Maria Helena Semedo and Chief Economist Maximo Torero Cullen state the livestock sector “must contribute to addressing a range of challenges... These include issues related to the environment...” including deforestation, CO2 emissions, unsustainable water and land use, pollution, and animal health related issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This Day in Weather History 1927: F5 tornado roars toward McPherson

After a successful return to Funded Partners during 2022-2023, Salina Area United Way has announced that 2023-2024 Funded Partner applications are now open to qualified nonprofit organizations.

Last year, staff came to the decision to return to Funded Partners after many deep discussions with business leaders, engaged community members, and local non-profit organizations. Joining Salina Area United Way as a Funded Partner means joining a funded partnership where the end goal of impact is now.

Applications will be accepted throughout the next month, with a closing submission deadline of noon on June 2. Funded Partners will be selected and awarded based on specific criteria outlined by community volunteer members of the Salina Area United Way Grants Committee and Board of Directors. Salina Area United WayAfter a successful return to Funded Partners during 2022-2023, Salina Area United Way has announced that 2023-2024 Funded Partner applications are now open to qualified nonprofit organizations.Last year, staff came to the decision to return to Funded Partners after many deep discussions with business leaders, engaged community members, and local non-profit organizations. Joining Salina Area United Way as a Funded Partner means joining a funded partnership where the end goal of impact is now.Applications will be accepted throughout the next month, with a closing submission deadline of noon on June 2. Funded Partners will be selected and awarded based on specific criteria outlined by community volunteer members of the Salina Area United Way Grants Committee and Board of Directors.
