MARION - A small earthquake rattled part of eastern Marion County Thursday afternoon.

The 2.5 magnitude quake struck at 2:07 p.m. Thursday east-northeast of Marion, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. The quake was centered just west of the Marion-Chase county line slightly more than two miles north of Kansas Highway 150.

Police identify body found in north Salina Monday

ABILENE - An Abilene native will be honored with his likeness on the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo buckle.

Ethan McDonald, who grew up in Abilene and now lives in Paola, is the feature on this year’s rodeo buckle.

The son of John and Mary McDonald, the McDonald family returned to Abilene when Ethan was an eighth grader, after&nbsp;living in Colorado and Minneapolis, Kan. As a kid, Ethan and his family traveled with John, who transported bucking bulls to pro rodeos across the country.

But every year they’d be back for the Abilene rodeo. Ethan remembers those days. 

“Abilene, to me, was ‘that’ rodeo,” he said. “You’d see the big rodeo names, like (multiple-time world champions) Trevor Brazile, Matt Austin, Ty Murray, the who’s who of rodeo,” he said.

John raised bucking bulls, and at practice sessions at the arena at their house, Ethan was called on as a bullfighter. While in college at Fort Hays State University, he helped with college rodeo practices. In college, he was encouraged to get his PRCA membership, which he did in 2011.

From 2011 to 2019, he worked as a bullfighter at rodeos across the nation, including the Abilene rodeo, from 2014-2018.

He loved it, especially when he worked in front of his hometown crowd in Abilene. 

“Being able to be part of it, I really enjoyed it," Ethan explained. "At first, I was the guy at the back of the chutes, watching, then I became part of the production.”

It was fun for him to showcase his bullfighting skills to his friends and family in Abilene. 

“A high school coach or teacher would come up to you and want to say hi, almost like you were a celebrity,” Ethan said.

Ethan retired from bullfighting in 2019, to spend more time with his wife, Madison, and their growing family, including daughter Landri, age six, and sons Calvin and Miles, ages 5 and 1 and ½.

“I miss the adrenaline and the camaraderie,” Ethan said.

He follows in his dad’s footsteps as a feature on the buckle; John is on the 2002 buckle.

Ethan said he is honored to appear on the 2023 buckle. 

“It’s cool, knowing you’re part of a niche group,” he said.

The annual buckle auction for the rodeo will be held Sunday, July 30 at the Abilene Elks Club at 417 NW Fourth Street.&nbsp; Buckles numbered one through 10 and number 500 will be auctioned off.

Social hour for the auction begins at 6 pm, with the auction following at 6:30 p.m.

Abilene rodeo announces bullfighter as feature on 2023 buckle series

A Salina man was arrested after a stabbing incident at the Central Mall Wednesday night.

Officers were dispatched at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to the Central Mall, 2259 S. Ninth Street, for the report of a stabbing. The officers made contact with a mall security guard who told them she had been approached by several teens who told her of an adult male who was attempting to give them cigarettes and who invited them to his residence, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

One of the teens called his father, Kenneth Brown, 41, of Salina, who showed up a short while later, confronted the man on the east side of Ross Dress for Less and told him to leave the teens alone, Forrester said.

The man, later identified as Michael Lilly, 61, of Salina, took a couple of swings at Brown, who then punched Lilly in the face, knocking him to the ground, Forrester said.

Brown turned to walk away and then realized that when Lilly had swung at him, he had done so with a knife. Brown discovered that he had two stab wounds in his side. Brown was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, where it was discovered that he also was suffering from a punctured lung, Forrester said.

In the meantime, Lilly had walked through Ross Dress for Less and was located in the center part of the mall. Forrester said Lilly was found to be in possession of a large, fixed-blade knife.

Lilly was arrested on a requested charge of aggravated battery, Forrester said.

UPDATE: Salina man arrested after stabbing incident at Central Mall

CLOUD COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 3:30a.m. Thursday in Cloud County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Mack semi driven by Alvin G. Ryan, 51, Hutchinson, was northbound on U.S. 81 at Jade Road.

The vehicle left the roadway to the right, entered the east ditch and continued north in the ditch until the Jade Road Intersection where the driver corrected. The semi then rolled and came to rest in the roadway.

EMS transported Ryan to Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized in Salina after semi overturns

Saturday marked the SculptureTour Salina (STS) UNwrap festivities downtown. Twenty-two sculptures in the 2023 tour were unwrapped along Santa Fe Avenue - the heart of downtown Salina.

As part of the celebration, Cassi Rebman, Belle Plaine, Minn., served as the 2023 juror. Rebman holds a BFA in fine arts studio, sculpture (2015) from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minneapolis, Minn., an AFA in art (2012) from Normandale Community College, Bloomington, Minn, and her MFA in sculpture is expected in 2023 from Fort Hays State University, Hays.

After viewing the 22 pieces of the exhibit, Rebman presented these three Awards of Merit from the City Lights Stage downtown.

Award of Merit - $750 to Jodie Bliss, of Colorado, for her piece “Phoenix”

Award of Merit - $1,500 to Justin Deister, of Colorado, for his piece “Resilience”

Best of Show - $2,500 to Brady Hatter, of Kansas, for his piece “Mr. Hatters’s Pursuits in Becoming Human: 004 Golden Sphere.”

The public can participate in the People’s Choice Award program by picking up a brochure/ballot from a downtown merchant, the Salina Downtown Inc., office at 134 S. Santa Fe Avenue, Suite 120, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce/Visit Salina offices at 120 W. Ash Street, or from one of the silver ballot boxes placed at one side of each mid-block pedestrian crossing on Santa Fe Avenue. Once votes are cast, the ballots can be placed in one of the silver ballot boxes. Voting is open to everyone.

The sculpture receiving the most votes by Dec. 31, 2023, will be purchased by the City of Salina to become part of the city’s public art collection, remaining on public display.

Medicaid expansion has been a hot topic over the past decade. Despite many states across the country expanding their Medicaid programs under the Affordable Care Act, Kansas has yet to do so.

According to the 2022 Kansas Speaks public opinion survey distributed by the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University, nearly 76% of Kansans support KanCare expansion — KanCare is the name of the state’s Medicaid program.

Despite extremely high levels of public support, the state legislature has failed to expand KanCare. The reason is most often attributed to partisan politics.

However, opponents of KanCare expansion may want to take a second look at some specific benefits of extending the program — 90% of which would be paid for by the federal government.

The RAND Corporation, a non-partisan policy think tank, has published new data about state-level firearm related deaths.

According to their findings, Kansas’ firearm death rates are 24% higher than the national average. This high percentage is driven mostly by the state’s firearm death by suicide rate, which is 46% higher than the national average.

Firearm homicides are 7% lower in Kansas than the national average.

Contrary to popular belief, gun violence is not unique to urban areas.

New research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) last month finds that gun violence is not even predominantly an urban issue — an argument that is generally used as justification for loosening gun laws. Rather, all areas of Kansas are impacted by gun violence. Especially self-harm via firearms.

In Kansas’ rural areas, firearm deaths are 14% higher than the national average, firearm deaths by suicide are 25% higher, and rural firearm homicides are 9% lower.

What does this have to do with KanCare expansion?

Research from the Kaiser Foundation finds that Medicaid expansion increases access to care for adults with mental health conditions, such as depression.

Medicaid expansion is associated with an increase in the number of mental health facilities accepting Medicaid patients and an increase in the number of visits individual patients make to mental health providers.

Medicaid expansion is especially beneficial in providing much needed mental healthcare to rural residents, as nearly half of all mental health professional shortage areas nationally are located in rural areas.

Furthermore, a report from the Kansas Health Institute and the Alliance for a Healthy Kansas found that an estimated 24,154 Kansans are likely to use extended mental and behavioral health services under KanCare expansion.

Another research study published in JAMA, this one in June 2022, finds that an average of 1818 deaths by suicide were averted in Medicaid expansion states after the expansions — mostly among 20-29 year olds.

Expanding KanCare could — and based on the research likely would — prevent firearms deaths, especially those by suicide, in our state.

OCCK Get On & Go youth summer bus passes on sale May 15

SALINE COUNTY —Two people including a Kansas State Trooper were injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp; 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by Robert Roswell, 61, Rock Springs, Wyo., was westbound on Interstate 70 two miles west of the Interstate 135 interchange.

The pickup entered the shoulder lane and rear-ended a Kansas Highway Patrol 2021 Dodge Durango driven by Trooper Steven Sneath, 64,&nbsp;Geneseo, who was legally stopped on the westbound shoulder of the interstate performing a motorist assist with the patrol vehicle's emergency lights activated

EMS transported Roswell and Sneath to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; The KHP released no additional details.

At approximately 2 p.m., a Kansas Highway Patrol Troop C vehicle was struck while a trooper was assisting a motorist in the westbound lanes on Interstate 70 at milepost 249 in Saline County.&nbsp;

According to a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/KHPTroopC">Facebook post from KHP Troop C</a>, the trooper whose patrol vehicle was hit is alert and conscious, however, he was initially trapped inside his vehicle.

Westbound lanes of Interstate 70 at milepost 249 were closed due to the accident until 3 p.m.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reminds motorists that "Kansas Law requires all drivers to move over or slow down for emergency personnel and road crews when flashing lights are visible. Only three feet separate emergency personnel from traffic moving at highway speeds, and there's only so much emergency personnel can do to keep themselves safe when they pull over on the side of the road.  

"Please do your part to help our Troopers go home to their loved ones. You can make a difference and help save someone's life by moving over and slowing down," KHP asked.

Dennis and Chuck Budke were little boys when the Hollywood crew for "Paper Moon" descended on Hays.

The boys' mother attended a casting call in Hays but was told they didn't have any more female roles. They needed kids. That she had. There were 14 siblings in the Budke family.

Eight of those siblings were cast in a scene from "Paper Moon," which was filmed in Wilson, Hays and locations around Ellis County.

Dennis and Chuck recounted their memories of the filming Saturday during the "Paper Moon" Festival in Wilson, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the film's release.

The Budke family was in a scene during which Moze, played by Ryan O'Neal, and Addie, played by his daughter Tatum O'Neal, try to sell a Bible to a poor family.&nbsp;

The widow comes to the door and her many children, the Budke siblings, file in behind her. Addie turns to Moze and tells him the Bible is paid for.&nbsp;

Dennis, who was about 10 when the movie was filmed, remembers his youngest sibling in the scene, his sister who was about 2, kept crying. The crew tried to get her to stop, but she just keep crying.

Finally, they decided to precede and include the crying child in the scene.

Dennis said he remembers eating lunch with Tatum and Ryan O'Neal. He said Tatum was much like she was in the movie, complaining to her dad about her ham sandwich.

He said his siblings played with Tatum on a nearby playground between takes.

"It was a pretty good experience," Dennis said, "It was kind of scary at first. We got to see all of these people and the lights and trucks and trailers."

Chuck, who was only 5 during the filming, said the filming of the movie was one of his earliest memories. Chuck is now a resident of Salina.

Chuck was so small that the crew gave him a couple of Sears catalogs to stand on so he could be seen in the shot.

Dennis still has the pay stub from the film. It was for a whopping $14.

Both men remember the Hays premiere of the film, which included a red carpet showing at the Fox Theatre in downtown Hays.

The boys, who came from a family of modest means, remember drinking pop and eating popcorn, a rare treat.

Dennis said a few girls even asked him for his autograph.

The McCraken Historical Museum still has a newspaper clipping from the time that includes a picture of the eight Bubke siblings who were in the movie.

"Paper Moon" depicts the Depression era in Kansas and Missouri. It was shot in black and white by director Peter Bogdanovich and tells the story of drifter, Moze, and a little girl, Addie, as Moze takes Addie from rural Kansas to St. Joseph, Mo., to live with her aunt.

Tatum O'Neal won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, becoming the youngest actress to do so.

Seven locations in Wilson were in the movie. All of those locations in Wilson were marked during the festival with photos of the original images from the movie. Several of the buildings are now vacant, and one, the Otasco Building, has been torn down.

In September 1974, ABC premiered a&nbsp;television&nbsp;series by the same name based on the film.&nbsp;Jodie Foster&nbsp;was cast as Addie and&nbsp;Christopher Connelly&nbsp;played Moze. Dennis Budke received a callback and was in the third episode of the series, but the series only ran 13 episodes and was canceled.

Susan Keith was only 4 when the "Paper Moon" crew shot the opening scene of the movie at her family's cemetery outside of McCracken. Her mother, Carolyn Thompson, took Keith to the Nickel family cemetery where she met Tatum O'Neal.

Although Keith was too young to remember that day, she still has a photo of her and the young actress.

The Nickel family cemetery is still being maintained today and is much the same as it was 50 years ago when the movie was shot there, said Keith, who grew up in McCracken, but now lives in Ellsworth.

A father-daughter duo came from San Diego just for the festival. Jim Croff came dressed as Moze and his daughter,&nbsp;Adrienne&nbsp; Blake, as Addie. Croff has owned a Ford Model A since he was in his twenties. This is the car that Moze is driving at the beginning of the movie.

Croff said he has always loved vintage cars, and movies, including "Paper Moon" and "The Sting" and the TV show "The Waltons" amplified his fascination with the Model A.

"Paper Moon" debuted before Adrienne, 39, was born, but she said she remembers watching the movie with her dad and riding in parades in the Model A.

The duo also toured the cemetery and the "Paper Moon" wing at of historical museum at McCracken.&nbsp;

"That's been the best part," Blake said, "hearing the stories about what it was like when the crew was here. My favorite part is that it was just people from the town who were also in the movie. I just can't imagine what it was like at the time having this whole Hollywood movie crew come into your town and want to film there."

Croff said he enjoyed meeting the local residents.

"There's just wonderful folk wherever you go," he said, wearing a pinstripe linen suit. ... "People opened their homes to us."

Defiance Brewing Co. will have a commemorative beer, which has yet to be named. Two free showings of the movie will be offered at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 17 and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 18 at Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.&nbsp;

There will be special exhibits at the Hays Arts Council Annex along with the Summer Art Walk on June 16 and at the McCracken Historical Society will be open on Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17.&nbsp;

McCracken also will have a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 17 at the McCracken Community Building, and The Little Big Band will perform from 1 to 2 p.m. at the community building.

They needed kids. That she had. There were 14 siblings in the Budke family.Eight of those siblings were cast in a scene from "Paper Moon," which was filmed in Wilson, Hays and locations around Ellis County.Dennis and Chuck recounted their memories of the filming Saturday during the "Paper Moon" Festival in Wilson, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the film's release.<figure>

 </figure>The Budke family was in a scene during which Moze, played by Ryan O'Neal, and Addie, played by his daughter Tatum O'Neal, try to sell a Bible to a poor family.&nbsp;The widow comes to the door and her many children, the Budke siblings, file in behind her. Addie turns to Moze and tells him the Bible is paid for.&nbsp;Dennis, who was about 10 when the movie was filmed, remembers his youngest sibling in the scene, his sister who was about 2, kept crying. The crew tried to get her to stop, but she just keep crying.Finally, they decided to precede and include the crying child in the scene.<figure>

 </figure>Dennis said he remembers eating lunch with Tatum and Ryan O'Neal. He said Tatum was much like she was in the movie, complaining to her dad about her ham sandwich.He said his siblings played with Tatum on a nearby playground between takes."It was a pretty good experience," Dennis said, "It was kind of scary at first. We got to see all of these people and the lights and trucks and trailers."Chuck, who was only 5 during the filming, said the filming of the movie was one of his earliest memories. Chuck is now a resident of Salina.<figure>

 </figure>Chuck was so small that the crew gave him a couple of Sears catalogs to stand on so he could be seen in the shot.Dennis still has the pay stub from the film. It was for a whopping $14.Both men remember the Hays premiere of the film, which included a red carpet showing at the Fox Theatre in downtown Hays.The boys, who came from a family of modest means, remember drinking pop and eating popcorn, a rare treat.Dennis said a few girls even asked him for his autograph.The McCraken Historical Museum still has a newspaper clipping from the time that includes a picture of the eight Bubke siblings who were in the movie.<figure>

 </figure>"Paper Moon" depicts the Depression era in Kansas and Missouri. It was shot in black and white by director Peter Bogdanovich and tells the story of drifter, Moze, and a little girl, Addie, as Moze takes Addie from rural Kansas to St. Joseph, Mo., to live with her aunt.Tatum O'Neal won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, becoming the youngest actress to do so.Seven locations in Wilson were in the movie. All of those locations in Wilson were marked during the festival with photos of the original images from the movie. Several of the buildings are now vacant, and one, the Otasco Building, has been torn down.In September 1974, ABC premiered a&nbsp;television&nbsp;series by the same name based on the film.&nbsp;Jodie Foster&nbsp;was cast as Addie and&nbsp;Christopher Connelly&nbsp;played Moze. Dennis Budke received a callback and was in the third episode of the series, but the series only ran 13 episodes and was canceled.<figure>

 </figure>Susan Keith was only 4 when the "Paper Moon" crew shot the opening scene of the movie at her family's cemetery outside of McCracken. Her mother, Carolyn Thompson, took Keith to the Nickel family cemetery where she met Tatum O'Neal.Although Keith was too young to remember that day, she still has a photo of her and the young actress.The Nickel family cemetery is still being maintained today and is much the same as it was 50 years ago when the movie was shot there, said Keith, who grew up in McCracken, but now lives in Ellsworth.A father-daughter duo came from San Diego just for the festival. Jim Croff came dressed as Moze and his daughter,&nbsp;Adrienne&nbsp; Blake, as Addie. Croff has owned a Ford Model A since he was in his twenties. This is the car that Moze is driving at the beginning of the movie.<figure>

'Paper Moon' extras recall filming during 50th anniversary festival in Wilson

A Goddard man was arrested Tuesday morning after a deputy noticed his car parked on the side of the road near an auto salvage yard west of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning that a deputy on patrol in the 2600 block of W. Old Highway 40 at approximately 7:44 a.m. Tuesday noticed a vehicle parked on the side of the road in front of Heath Auto Salvage, 2640 W. Old Highway 40.

When the deputy got out to investigate, he made contact with Toby Nelson, 45, of Goddard. While the deputy was talking with Nelson, he became suspicious of the reason Nelson was there, Hughes said. The deputy then discovered that Nelson had a suspended driver's license.

While Nelson was being arrested for driving on a suspended license, he allegedly became resistant to arrest and was tased, Hughes said.

During the investigation, approximately $500 worth of items, including a catalytic converter cut off a Ford van, that were stolen from the auto salvage yard allegedly were found in Nelson's car, Hughes said. Additionally, methamphetamine allegedly was found in the car.

Nelson was arrested on the following requested charges, Hughes said.

Two vehicles collide in central Salina; drivers injured, one cited

A local man was injured in a single-vehicle accident Monday west of Salina.

Michael Panzer, 52, of Salina, was westbound in the 11000 block of State Street when his 1998 Lincoln Towncar left the roadway and struck a concrete bridge railing, Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning.

It is believed that mechanical issues with the car caused it to go off the roadway.

Hughes said Panzer was treated and released at the scene by EMS.

Salina man injured in single-vehicle wreck west of city

By KIM BALDWIN McPherson County farmer and rancher &nbsp; The saying “April showers bring May flowers” is what runs through my mind every spring. It’s a saying that has held true for almost every year I have lived on our Kansas farm.&nbsp; &nbsp; Like clockwork, the crocus and daffodils are the first to appear followed by my tulips, lilacs and peonies. Add in the fruit trees blooming and you have a beautiful spring floral assortment.&nbsp; &nbsp; Generally, by the time my peonies and lilacs bloom, I can’t help but attempt to capture the aromas and beauty by arranging cuttings of these flowers into a table-top display to be enjoyed in my kitchen as a precursor of June’s wheat harvest. &nbsp; However, this year’s blooms never went on display to be enjoyed at my kitchen table. The sweet smells from one of my lilacs have been enjoyed only when I walk up to the bush and bring my nose close to the smaller-than-normal white blooms. &nbsp; I’m still waiting on my peonies to appear. Like normal, the plant has grown and buds have formed; but as I’ve kept watch over this plant anticipating its May bloom, I’ve been left wondering if we’ve somehow missed the last step and the flowers will not come this year. &nbsp; Perhaps it is just a little late to bloom this year, but I can’t help but wonder if the delay of my peonies and stunted lilacs are signs of what our wheat harvest will look like. &nbsp; It’s no secret that we experienced an incredibly dry 2022. The drought stressed our crops, stressed our water sources and stressed us. We had hoped for a wet winter, but instead it remained mild. It feels as if the first five months of 2023 is a continuation of last year’s drought.&nbsp; &nbsp; The ponds in our pastures, which would normally be filled by now, are totally dry. We’ve been watching our wheat slowly grow. We hesitated to begin the spring planting of our fall crops in hopes it would rain; and when we did begin planting, we planted the seeds deeper than we’ve ever planted them to ensure they had some moisture to begin their growth.&nbsp; &nbsp; My husband has always half-joked that when a farmer prays for rain, there’s more people praying for the opposite. He’s probably right. After all, people have parades, picnics, car shows, golf outings, garage sales, field trips and weekend plans that call for nice, sunny days to be enjoyed in the spring.&nbsp; &nbsp; Even though my prayers for rain might be outnumbered, I will continue to pray for it multiple times daily.&nbsp; &nbsp; I generally keep my daily prayers between God and myself, but like many other farmers, I’m openly calling for others to join me in our request. &nbsp; Please Lord, let it rain.
