Storm chances increase for Mother's Day

MARION - Two small quakes rattled part of eastern Marion County Saturday evening.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the first earthquake struck at 7:07 p.m. Saturday northeast of Marion. The quake was centered just northeast of the Alfalfa Road-240th Road intersection.

Then, at 7:08 p.m. Saturday, a 2.8 magnitude quake struck several miles southeast of the first, just west of the Marion-Chase county line and just south of the east end of 220th Street.

Approximately 150 members of the Class of 2023, together with family, friends, and community members, gathered Saturday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center for Kansas Wesleyan University’s 2023 Commencement ceremony.

Mike Dibbini ’99, G’02, longtime KWU men’s and women’s soccer coach and the current women’s soccer coach at Kansas State University, was the commencement speaker and shared stirring remarks on the importance of everyday relationships.

Award winners included Connor Waltz (Niceville, Fla.) and Madeline Goans (Chandler, Okla.) who earned the Fran Jabara Leadership awards, an honor based on entrepreneurial traits and leadership, particularly in business creation. Waltz was also one of two students to earn the University Medallion, sharing that honor with Avery DeWalt (Keller, Texas). That award is given to the graduating senior with the highest GPA.

The university’s nursing class, meanwhile, received their pins in a ceremony Friday evening in Mabee Arena.

Saturday’s ceremony marked the third consecutive year KWU has held commencement at Tony’s Pizza Events Center.

The Salina Salvation Army is hosting a Community Garage Sale in June.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 3 at the Salvation Army, 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue.

"This is a great opportunity for you to declutter your homes and make some extra cash by selling your gently used items. It's also a chance to help The Salvation Army help the community through our various programs and activities," the Salvation Army noted in a news release.

Summer reading has long been a staple of public libraries across the country. At Salina Public Library, one of our most frequent fond recollections from adult patrons is participating in summer reading as a child. Efforts to promote reading, especially during the summer, are central to the library’s calendar with our first inter-departmental planning meeting held in the fall the year before.&nbsp;

There is a reason we put staff time and resources into the summer. The “summer slide” refers to children’s risk of losing reading and math skills gained over the course of the school year during summer break. This is especially true for younger children and disproportionally affects children from low-income families.

The good news is that helping children retain what they learned over the school year doesn’t have to involve long days in a classroom or expensive learning tools. Simple things like encouraging reading and making time for educational play can make a big difference. That’s why the library sets a summer reading goal with prize incentives and offers about 100 free educational youth programs over the summer. A traditional summer reading program has evolved at the library to include STEM programs, Moby Max and book club sessions with a certified teacher and learning packets that include math and reading worksheets.

The goal is for the community to read 15,000 books over the course of nine weeks. Participation in the library’s summer reading goal is simple and no registration is required. Each week beginning May 19 through July 20, readers of all ages can submit the number of books they have read online at <a href="http://salinapubliclibrary.org/" target="_blank">salinapubliclibrary.org</a> or by completing a paper form at the library. We encourage adults to participate in the reading goal as well because children who have adults who read in their lives are more likely to be readers themselves. At the end of the week, 10 winners will be drawn from the submissions. Prizes will include gift certificates, toys and books.&nbsp;

Summer at the Library will start with a kickoff celebration from 5-7 p.m. May 19 in Caldwell Plaza. There will be games, a prize drawing, and hot dogs. 

The summer will wrap up with a pool party for youth on July 23 and a gathering for adults at Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee on Aug. 4. 

The Friends of the Salina Public Library has provided support for summer prizes and parties.

Additionally,&nbsp;health and nutrition are impacted by the summer months with students who rely on school lunches needing to fill the gap. To help our community with this issue over the summer, the library partners with St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church to be a summer lunch site by handing out meals from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday at the McKenzie Center, 308 W. Elm Street. Priority is given to youth 0-18. 

The library also is continuing its partnership with Salina Family Healthcare Center which will have personnel at the library from 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 1 and July 6. They’ll provide health screenings and education.

There will be games, a prize drawing, and hot dogs. The summer will wrap up with a pool party for youth on July 23 and a gathering for adults at Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee on Aug. 4. The Friends of the Salina Public Library has provided support for summer prizes and parties. A full listing of events can be found at <a href="http://calendar.salinapubliclibrary.org/" target="_blank">calendar.salinapubliclibrary.org</a> or by picking up a library calendar at the library or around town.Additionally,&nbsp;health and nutrition are impacted by the summer months with students who rely on school lunches needing to fill the gap. To help our community with this issue over the summer, the library partners with St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church to be a summer lunch site by handing out meals from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday at the McKenzie Center, 308 W. Elm Street. Priority is given to youth 0-18. The library also is continuing its partnership with Salina Family Healthcare Center which will have personnel at the library from 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 1 and July 6. They’ll provide health screenings and education.

Trucks, trucks and you guessed it, more trucks! The Garage Automotive Museum in Salina opened its largest exhibit yet on May 4.

On this episode of "King in the Community," I speak with Matthew Miller-Wells, education director for The Garage, about how he and his team of volunteers managed to move all 40 exhibit vehicles in just three days, his thought process behind selecting which vehicles make it onto the museum floor, and the history of how trucks became a must have vehicle out of necessity.&nbsp;

"Usually exhibit change overs are rewarding, but it comes at a cost usually at the sake of my sanity. I think that's what makes me so proud of this one that it feels like that. You know, we've been at this for a little over a year now and we're really starting to get it pinned down. So it's just it's really great to have this here," Miller-Wells said.&nbsp;

The county expects to take possession of the facility from the construction team at the end of September. October and November will be opportunities for public tours, staff training and exercise of building systems. Inmates are anticipated to be housed in the new jail by early December.

Saline County administrator provides jail project update

Thanks to a generous donation to Salina Area Technical College’s new Industrial Maintenance and Automation program, private contributions to the project have surpassed $1 million.

Salina Tech President Greg Nichols announced Thursday a $400,000 donation from the Sunderland Foundation, of Overland Park, towards the project.

In January, Salina Tech announced it had received a $1.8 million grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce to help pay for a new building on campus to house the program, and that the college needed to match that grant with another $1.8 million to move forward.

“Since then, we’ve seen great support for the project,” Nichols said.

 Previous donations include $400,000 from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, more than $150,000 in donations of equipment for use in the program, $90,000 from Saline County, and several smaller donations.

An architect has drafted plans for a 15,000-square-foot building with classrooms, shop spaces, and an 80-seat amphitheater.

“The Sunderland Foundation gift is a huge boost to our campaign,” Nichols said. “Because of our enrollment growth in recent years, the only way we could implement this new program is in a new building – we’re simply out of room.

The Industrial Maintenance and Automation program is intended to train employees on configuring and maintaining automated manufacturing equipment, which regional employers such as Tony’s Pizza and Kubota increasingly rely on.

Depending on construction time, the program is expected to launch in the fall of 2024.

A Salina man was arrested after an alleged threat incident outside a downtown restaurant late Thursday night.

Officers were sent to Spicoli's Toasted Subs, 117 N. Santa Fe Avenue, for a report of suspicious activity, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning.

A male employee told officers that he had gone in back of the restaurant and found a man who was using the restaurant's water spigot. He told the man to leave, at which point the man allegedly displayed a small knife and threatened the employee.

Hanus said a second employee confirmed the report.

Officers searched the area, but could not locate the man, who was identified as Tadd Marshall, 37, of Salina.

Later, Marshall showed up at the Salina Police Department and was arrested on the following requested charges, Hanus said.

Restaurant employee allegedly threatened; Salina man arrested

On Monday at 10:30 a.m., officers with the Salina Police Department responded to the 1900 block of N. Fifth Street, Salina, regarding a body that had been located. 

On arrival, officers found human remains that were in advanced stages of decomposition. Detectives have been investigating the death. 

The deceased has been identified as Jason Latham, a 40-year-old Salina resident. Detectives are seeking any information regarding Latham and his whereabouts preceding his death.

I’m hearing more and more about “de-dollarization” and how several countries are moving away from the U.S. dollar as their basis of international trade. Will this affect the strength of the dollar, and should I be concerned about how I’m saving and investing because of this?&nbsp;

First and foremost, I care enough about you to say you may be spending way too much time on the internet, buddy. You’re drifting into the realm of conspiracy theories here, so let’s slow down and take a look at some facts.

China, Brazil and Russia are the three main players in all this. They already don’t use the U.S. dollar as their basis of international trade—all three have their own currency, and there’s a conversion rate between all those currencies and the U.S. dollar. Those three countries, along with some of the oil-producing countries from the Middle East they’re trying to get on board with the idea, are talking about developing one currency they all use. In international trade, that currency would be converted back and forth to dollars—much like what Europe did with the euro. Which, by the way, really hasn’t worked out so well.

Are those countries going to be able to devalue the dollar by doing that? No. Why? Because while those countries take up a lot of land mass, they don’t take up a lot of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the world. The United States still represents the vast majority of the world’s GDP. Sure, China’s big in that regard. But Russia doesn’t bring much to the table, and Brazil is barely scraping by in a failed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/daves-investing-philosophy" target="_blank">economy</a>. Plus, they’re tiny as far as economics are concerned. I mean, Texas probably has a larger GDP than Brazil.

In other words, they just don’t have the muscle to take down the dollar mathematically speaking. Now, if they do manage to put this idea together, it still won’t end in “de-dollarization.” The dollar will not be done away with. Even if they create their own currency, they’re still going to have to trade with the 800-pound gorilla, which is America. And they’re going to have to trade with us in dollars.

Am I worried about this, Zack? Not one bit. And you shouldn’t be either.

Will this affect the strength of the dollar, and should I be concerned about how I’m saving and investing because of this?&nbsp;ZackDear Zack,First and foremost, I care enough about you to say you may be spending way too much time on the internet, buddy. You’re drifting into the realm of conspiracy theories here, so let’s slow down and take a look at some facts.China, Brazil and Russia are the three main players in all this. They already don’t use the U.S. dollar as their basis of international trade—all three have their own currency, and there’s a conversion rate between all those currencies and the U.S. dollar. Those three countries, along with some of the oil-producing countries from the Middle East they’re trying to get on board with the idea, are talking about developing one currency they all use. In international trade, that currency would be converted back and forth to dollars—much like what Europe did with the euro. Which, by the way, really hasn’t worked out so well.Are those countries going to be able to devalue the dollar by doing that? No. Why? Because while those countries take up a lot of land mass, they don’t take up a lot of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the world. The United States still represents the vast majority of the world’s GDP. Sure, China’s big in that regard. But Russia doesn’t bring much to the table, and Brazil is barely scraping by in a failed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/daves-investing-philosophy" target="_blank">economy</a>. Plus, they’re tiny as far as economics are concerned. I mean, Texas probably has a larger GDP than Brazil.In other words, they just don’t have the muscle to take down the dollar mathematically speaking. Now, if they do manage to put this idea together, it still won’t end in “de-dollarization.” The dollar will not be done away with. Even if they create their own currency, they’re still going to have to trade with the 800-pound gorilla, which is America. And they’re going to have to trade with us in dollars.Am I worried about this, Zack? Not one bit. In 2011, CEOs of the five largest oil companies went before the Senate Finance Committee, where Democrats challenged the executives to justify tax breaks at a time when people were paying $4 a gallon for gas.

Ten years ago: Pope Francis gave the Catholic Church new saints, including hundreds of 15th-century martyrs who were beheaded for refusing to convert to Islam, as he led his first canonization ceremony before tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square. Nineteen people were wounded in a gang-related shooting during a Mother's Day parade in New Orleans. Serena Williams kept her No. 1 ranking and added career title No. 50 as she beat Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the Madrid Open; Rafael Nadal won his fifth title since returning from a knee injury by beating Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4.

Five years ago: North Korea said it would dismantle its nuclear test site later in the month, in what analysts described as a mostly symbolic event that wouldn't represent a material step toward denuclearization. Iraq held its first elections since the collapse of the Islamic State group; there was a record-low turnout for balloting that saw the political coalition of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr win the most seats in parliament without capturing a majority.

One year ago: Finland's leaders came out in favor of applying to join NATO in part of a historic realignment on the continent 2 1/2 months after Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine sent a shiver of fear through Moscow's neighbors. The Kremlin reacted by warning it will be forced to take retaliatory "military-technical" steps. (Finland would be admitted into NATO in 2023). The world got a look at the first wild but fuzzy image of the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy, with astronomers calling it a "gentle giant" on a near-starvation diet.
