OCCK, Inc. Transportation will be celebrating National Transportation Week this week with a local BBQ.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Wednesday, OCCK Transportation will be hosting an open house and cookout in honor of National Transportation Week.&nbsp; The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 340 N. Santa Fe Avenue in Salina.&nbsp; Hot dogs, chips, and bottled water will be served.&nbsp; The event is free and open to the public.&nbsp; 

In addition, guests will be able to view the current transportation vehicles, including a CityGo bus, meet staff, and learn more about transportation.

“We love what we do, and we want to celebrate this week,” said Trell Grinter, OCCK transportation director. “The community has been so supportive of our efforts to provide public transportation throughout the region.&nbsp; This gives us an opportunity to share that with everyone.” National Transportation Week is a way to increase the awareness and appreciation of the transportation industry and to celebrate the community of transportation professionals who keep our country on the move.

According to information in the commission meeting packet, at the time the 2023 budget was adopted, "it was anticipated that a second set of bonds would be issued during 2023 to complete the jail project." However, staff has noted that "it has become apparent that excess collection of sales tax will be sufficient to pay remaining costs for the jail project without issuing new bonds. However, in order to legally expend funds to pay those costs out of the Jail Sales Tax Fund, it is necessary to amend the County’s adopted budget for that fund."

At the conclusion of the public hearing, commissioners are to consider adopting the proposed amended budget.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to hear budget allocation requests from the following.

Saline County to consider amending '23 budget concerning jail project

SALINE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 12:30p.m. Monday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Dodge Durango driven by Lisa A. Broshar, 60, Gypsum, was eastbound on Kansas 4 two miles north of Assaria.

The SUV left the road and traveled into the south ditch. The driver overcorrected to the left, which caused the vehicle to roll and come to rest in the in the north ditch.

EMS transported Broshar to Salina Regional Health Center. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Tours, proclamations, a public hearing, and trash corral designs are among the items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

Study Sessions and City Commission meetings will take place in–person at the City/County Building in Room 107 and via Zoom until further notice. The 2023 Smoky Hill River Festival season begins Wednesday afternoon when the first clue for the Medallion Quest is revealed.

The Medallion Quest marks the official countdown to the Smoky Hill River Festival, which is scheduled for June 8-11 in Salina's Oakdale Park.

The first Medallion Quest clue reveal by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities Arts Commissioners is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday on the front steps of the Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Avenue, according to information from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

After the Wednesday launch, two different Medallion Quest clues will be revealed each day - at 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. - until the medallion is found. The clues will be revealed on the <a href="https://www.festivalmedallionquest.com/">Medallion Quest website</a>.

Overnight storms bring much-needed rain to area

A motorcycle driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash early Friday morning in central Salina.

Joshua Rubino, 23, of Salina was southbound on Montrose Street in a 2010 Ford Fusion and stopped at the stop sign at W. Crawford Street. Rubino started to pull onto W. Crawford Street and struck a westbound Harley-Davidson Electra Glide motorcycle driven by Joshua Hazelton, 38, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The wreck occurred at approximately 6:50 a.m. Friday.

Hazelton was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

The Fusion had front-end damage and the motorcycle had damage all over. Both were removed by wrecker.

Rubino was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way, Forrester said.

More than $1,100 worth of items were stolen from a property northwest of Salina earlier this month.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that sometime between 8 a.m. May 5 and 2:50 p.m. Saturday, someone stole the following items from a property in the 7200 block of Colt Road.

A 160-piece World War II china set valued at $100

Soldan said it appeared that someone removed a hasp that was holding a padlock in place.

Multiple items stolen from property northwest of Salina

Graduation for the Salina Central Class of 2023 included a collective poem by classmates and some fun prompted by a dancing guest speaker and former Salina mayor.

The graduation ceremony for the 2023 Mustangs was late Sunday afternoon in the arena at Tony's Pizza Events Center.

Riley Anderson, a member of the Salina Central Class of 2023, presented not a speech, but a collective poem of lines from 42 different classmates.

"I told them it did not have to rhyme. Just write the first thing that came to mind," he said. "Our theme is 'Farewell Childhood.'"

Salina Central's graduation speaker was Dr. Trent Davis, a neurosurgeon who has served as Salina's mayor and still serves on the Salina City Commission.

Davis started his speech with a bit of music and dancing, encouraging the Class of 2023 to stand and join him.

"You gotta have some fun, right?" Davis said to the Class of 2023. "Now, if a shy, two-left-footed, non-dancing, dance floor hazard like me dared himself to do this and pulled it off, risking eternal embarrassment to his kids, rest assured that each of you graduates can do anything that you set your mind to. As Henry Ford said, 'Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're probably right. In other words, your attitude will determine your success or failure."

Quoting the Roman philosopher Seneca and Thomas Jefferson talking about luck, Davis said the graduates, were lucky to have earned their high school diplomas.

"Not everyone in the world has been afforded your opportunities," he said. "For 13 fun, long years, the devoted teachers of USD 305 have prepared you for your upcoming opportunities by not just filling you with facts, but teaching you how to think. As a result, you are able to turn the 'how comes' that you will encounter in life into 'why nots.' Your 'why nots' stimulate learning that creates new realities." 

Davis offered as an example a group of Salina high school students who two years ago forced the restructuring of the Salina Citizens Law Enforcement Advisory Board. The students, many of whom were too young to vote, organized into the Sunflower Coalition and questioned the status quo of citizen oversight of police-related complaints, Davis said.

"This coalition offered a better alternative that actually became the law. High school students who couldn't vote changed the law in the city. You're never too young or too old to make a difference," he said.

Davis also quoted a 20th Century poet who said that "education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire."

"For those of you going to college: be on fire. Don't just answer questions in class. Come up with new questions for which you must find the answer. For those of you devoting your life to social justice: be on fire. Keep your flame hot as you melt bigotry, hatred, resentment, poverty, and ignorance, as you create a lasting peace in the world. For those of you searching for your niche in life: be on fire in your readiness to meet the opportunity that's heading your way," Davis said. "For all we know the father or a mother of the next great industrial revolution might be sitting right here in this group."

Davis continued, "For those of you joining the military: be cool. Your quiet preparation is the deterrent for those who would cause destruction. However, should someone cross the line, be on fire as you defend this great country."

Davis then talked about the length of time it takes persons in various professions "to be really good at what they do."

"So as you leave Salina Central to show the world - and I gotta sing this - what a mighty, mighty Mustang can do, some advice. Let the light within you shine brighter than the light upon you. Don't depend on social media likes for your self-esteem. If attention and approval are your only goal, you are the tail, not the dog."

Davis kicks off Salina Central graduation speech with a little fun

The Salina South Class of 2023 participated in its graduation ceremony Sunday afternoon, and while every class has its defining moments, the Class of 2023 had some unexpected ones as well.

Denalyn Vasquez, president of the Salina South Class of 2023, spoke about how the class' high school career was out of the ordinary.

"Our high school career has got to be one of the craziest, most full-circle moments," she said.

Vasquez went on to recount how the COVID-19 pandemic hit, causing the class' freshman year to be cut short.

"Sophomore year, our class was split completely in half, and we only saw half of each other at school," she said. 

The class' junior year started with people wearing masks and then people starting "to come out of the COVID slump we had been in for the past two years."

"And finally, our senior year was mask free, no social distancing. Together again, just like we started," she said.

Vasquez also noted how involved the class was, ticking off a long list of activities and organizations in which class members participated. Plus, she noted, some class members also worked in addition to going to school and participating in activities.

"We have done something in our high school career that has gotten us involved," she said. "Something I've learned is that if there's an opportunity for you, go ahead and reach it because life is about making new possibilities happen every single day, and school gave us each a chance to get involved in something or even dabbling in being part of a team."

Vasquez said her mother has been the class' No. 1 supporter "since Day One." 

"If you've ever stepped foot into my house or even been near it, which I know a lot of you have, the best part, and the best bet, is that my mom knows who you are and she will ask me how you've been or why you don't come to the house anymore," Vasquez said. "And, just like that, I adopted the same feeling, so happy Mother's Day, mom."

And despite telling her father that she would not quote him, Vasquez shared some advice from her father.

"It matters what you do, because we're individuals who are planting seeds in the ground every day. One day, those seeds will sprout, and we want to be proud of the fruit those seeds produce," she said. "I'm not going to make you analyze that, because we all know we've had enough of that, but what it means is don't do something that will leave a bad mark, because one day, it will come back to you."

This year's graduation speaker, selected by the class officers, was Josh Massey, a history and government teacher at Salina South.

"South High graduating Class of 2023, it was my honor to be asked to speak to you on this occasion, because this occasion is your transition from childhood to adulthood," Massey said.

"Today I want to acknowledge all of the people that helped get you here, starting with the most important person. Today, you need to thank your momma. Alright. Thank your momma today. They worked really hard to get you here, and their work is not done. They're going to worry about you, advise you, fight for you and with you for the rest of your lives. Despite all of the things I will talk to you about today, this will remain constant, so cherish your mom. Today you need to do something nice for your mom," Massey said.

He continued, "The truth is, and many of you have heard this before from me, that you are the work of your parents' lives. They will never dedicate more emotional, intellectual, or financial resources to anything than they do their children. So this is your momma's day. So celebrate Mother's Day right."

Massey said graduation speeches have "little conventions and rituals and we gloss over the truth of achievement in speeches like this."

"Achievement is not equal. Okay. For some of you this was a really fiercesome and perilous journey. And for others, you're kind of expected to be here to be acknowledged and move on to the next challenge," Massey said. 

"We all know that this achievement is granted equally, but it is not earned equally. Right? Some of you put real sweat into your education. You prized the knowledge that you gained in your journey. Some of you have done this after sleeping in your car or couch surfing. Others after having suffered tremendous personal loss. And all of you have done this through a pandemic that disrupted the fabric of our society in ways that we fully do not understand yet, and yet, you made it, yet, you're here," he said.

Massey noted that he was breaking the graduation rule that the group has to be recognized as "a homogenous whole."

"You aren't. You're a large collection of individuals. You earned this honor individually, and you're going to go forward in the same way," he said. 

The Salina South graduation was the first of the two Salina Public Schools graduation ceremonies in the arena of Tony's Pizza Events Center.

Salina South Class of 2023: A group of involved individuals
