MITCHELL COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 11p.m. Friday in Mitchell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Nissan Kicks driven by Summer J. Hale, 21, Concordia, was northbound on 340th Road just north of H Road when a deer entered the roadway.&nbsp;

The animal collided with the SUV.&nbsp; After impact, the vehicle left the roadway, entered the west ditch and struck a utility pole.

EMS transported Hale to the Mitchell County Hospital. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman injured after SUV strikes deer, utility pole

CLAY COUNTY—The driver accused in a fatal DUI crash that occurred just after 7a.m. Thursday in Clay County has been moved from the hospital to jail.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1998 Chevy Silverado driven by&nbsp; Jacob Tyler&nbsp;Zelinski, 27, Beloit, was eastbound on U.S. 24 one mile east of Clay Center.

The pickup crossed the westbound lane, entered the north ditch and struck a 2001 Buick Park Avenue driven by Dale Hammond, 82, Clay Center, who was northbound on a driveway just north of U.S. 24.

Hammond was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the collision Zelinski fled the scene on foot. He was located and placed under arrest a short time later and transported to the Clay County Hospital. 

He is being held on requested charges that include involuntary manslaughter, fail to stop at crash resulting in death, DUI, expired registration, fail to maintain a lane, and failure to wear seatbelt, according to the KHP.

This week's 'KINA Saturday Morning' lineup

When the Sunset Sinners take the City Lights Stage in downtown Salina Saturday, fans will hear some of their favorites, but they also will get to hear new music by the group that has yet to be released.

The Sinners' performance is a part of Salina Downtown Inc.'s Santa Fe Weekender event going on Friday and Saturday in downtown Salina.

The Wedel Financial and Salina Downtown Inc.'s Weekender Concert will begin at 2 p.m. at the City Lights Stage. 

"We have a band, some pretty young cool cats that play some '80s stuff called Visual Lies, and they're playing from 2-3 p.m. and then the Sunset Sinners play from 3 to 5ish," said Blake Blackim, Sunset Sinners drummer and spokesperson. 

Blackim noted that the free event is a "lawn chair, cooler concert."

A Rollin' Smoke BBQ food truck also is scheduled to be on hand.

Blackim said that in addition to favorites such as Always Time For One More Beer and Friday Night, the band will perform new music that has yet to be released to music streaming services and radio stations.

"We have two brand new songs that are recorded but have not been released yet," he said. "The first song that will be coming out is called Coming Home. It's based on the military veteran that's done with his service and now he's back home and it's kind of like, 'now what do I do?'"

Another song that will come out later is called Meant to Be.

"It's honestly our first kind of love ballad song," Blackim said.

When Coming Home is released, probably next month, it will have enhancements from some Grammy Award winners.

"Coming Home, we're super excited about because around the first of the year, we started working with Jesse Atwell of Atwell Management out of Austin (Texas)," Blackim said. "He's worked extensively in the music industry, with Sony Records in New York and Nashville and another group called Thirty Tigers label in Nashville. He's worked with a lot of bands that are big now like Whiskey Myers and Scotty McCreery, and folks like that."

Atwell is a Salina native and a graduate of Salina Central High School, Blackim said.

Through Atwell's contacts, the Sunset Sinner's song Coming Home came to the attention of some Grammy Award winners.

"The cool thing about this song is that we have all sorts of Grammy Award winner-industry heavy hitters that worked on this particular song," Blackim said. "Andrew Scheps, who is one of the most famous industry music engineers, we sent the song to him. He really liked it. He's won three Grammy Awards. He's worked extensively with everybody from Adele to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Lady Gaga to Black Sabbath and Whiskey Myers. And that's a short list."

After Scheps worked his magic on Coming Home, the song was sent to Peter Limon, a Grammy-nominated music mastering engineer who owns Infrasonic Mastering.

"Peter does all the mastering for Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, and folks like that," Blackim said.

Additionally, the Dodd Sisters out of Austin, Texas, who also are Grammy Award winners, are doing the cover design work for the song, he said.

"So for the mixing, the mastering, and the artwork, we're working with all of these Grammy, big heavy-hitter industry folks. What that does besides just having a cool, great-sounding song, it opens doors in other areas for folks in the industry to open their eyes to go 'oh wow! These cats are actually doing something big,'" Blackim said.

The Sunset Sinners also are working on a follow-up to Always Time For One More Beer titled Two Beers.

"Ironically, this summer is the four-year anniversary of when we filmed the video for One More Beer," Blackim said.

Most of the music video for Always Time For One More Beer was filmed at the Hideaway bar in Salina.

"That was only supposed to be just to get a 10-second clip for the actual video, but it ended up blowing up and taking on a life of its own, so the majority of the video is from what happened that day," Blackim explained.

"So actually, there's going to be a four-year anniversary party in July at the Hideaway on a Saturday afternoon, and yes, we will be filming just in case there's some cool footage to get out of that for our new song coming out," he said.

The band also plans to remaster and rerelease Always Time For One More Beer and Friday Night, Blackim said.

Most of the music video for Always Time For One More Beer was filmed at the Hideaway bar in Salina."That was only supposed to be just to get a 10-second clip for the actual video, but it ended up blowing up and taking on a life of its own, so the majority of the video is from what happened that day," Blackim explained."So actually, there's going to be a four-year anniversary party in July at the Hideaway on a Saturday afternoon, and yes, we will be filming just in case there's some cool footage to get out of that for our new song coming out," he said.The band also plans to remaster and rerelease Always Time For One More Beer and Friday Night, Blackim said.

Sunset Sinners' playing downtown Weekender concert, working with Grammy winners

Salina USD 305 announced today the schedule for its Summer Food Program for children.

The program is set to begin May 30, and both breakfast and lunch is scheduled to be served Monday through Friday. The program will run through June 30, but will be closed June 19.

The free meals are for all children ages one through 18. No signup, eligibility or paperwork is required. 

Adults may eat breakfast for $3 per person and lunch for $5 per person.

Lunchtime activities from 12:30-1 p.m., will be provided by the Salina educators. Additionally, there will be book giveaways by the Salina Area United Way.

The Central Kansas District Extension Master Gardeners are ready for gardening and are jumping into spring planting season by hosting their annual fundraiser.

The Master Gardener Plant and Garden Garage Sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in Kenwood Hall, 900 Greeley Avenue in Salina.

It will feature a Master Gardener sale of plants, garden-related items, and garage finds you won't want to miss.

Proceeds from the Master Gardener Plant and Garden Garage sale will be used to support the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden in Kenwood Park and other Master Gardener outreach activities and projects, such as the garden tour planned for 2024.

Master Gardeners have been busy growing many unique warm-season vegetables such as heat set, patio, and heirloom tomatoes, squash, peppers, melons, eggplant, and more. The plant sale will also feature divided flowers/perennials, milkweed, houseplants, and more.

Admission to the sale is free and garden item donations are welcome.

Master Gardeners are also providing a children’s activity table during the event.

The fundraiser sale also wiil feature the Dyck Arboretum of Hesston, which will be offering native plants, grasses, and adaptable perennials to boost your spring plans and planting for pollinators, butterflies, and much more.

Faye’s Playground will be at the sale offering unique varieties of iris and daylilies just in time for spring planting.

Paradise Ponds of Ellsworth will also have a unique selection of water/aquatic plants available for purchase.

AMBUCS members from throughout a seven-state region are in Salina this week and while they are here, they are helping the community.

Larry Pankratz told Salina Post that the Salina Breakfast and Noon AMBUCS clubs are sponsoring the Great Plains Region AMBUCS conference, which started Thursday and runs through Saturday in Salina.

One of the group's community service projects while in town was to build a ramp onto the back of Ashby House's shelter at the corner of S. Eighth Street and W. Walnut Street. The ramp can be used by persons in wheelchairs or those who have other mobility issues.

AMBUCS members gathered at the facility Friday morning to help the Salina Breakfast AMBUCS club build the ramp. Pankratz said this ramp is the 572nd ramp the club has built in the Salina area.

AMBUCS conference attendees help build ramp at Ashby House facility

Thieves used a stolen pickup to break into an ATM at a south Salina financial institution and in the process also damaged the wall of a neighboring office building early Friday morning.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that at 4:14 a.m. Friday, the dispatch center received a notification that an alarm had been activated at Great Plains Federal Credit Union, 2061 S. Ohio Street. 

Officers arrived at 4:17 a.m. and discovered a red 2000 Ford F250 pickup on the south side of the credit union. The pickup also was lodged in the north wall of Salina Family Vision, 2069 S. Ohio Street.

Hanus said the ATM had been ripped open with the hook and chains attached to the pickup and the ATM. The cash box, which contained an undisclosed amount of money, was missing.

The ATM was destroyed. A replacement will cost approximately $45,000, he said.

Although there was no damage estimate for the wall at Salina Family Vision, Hanus said it was expected to be in the thousands of dollars. He also said that a City of Salina Building inspector did declare the building safe.

Using license plate registration information, officers made contact with the owner of the pickup, who didn't know his pickup had been stolen until the officers showed up at his door. The pickup, valued at $5,000, had been parked in the 2100 block of Linden Drive, a few blocks away from the credit union.

Hanus said officers were canvassing the area and had found a witness who reported seeing two to three shorter stature males at the scene of the theft. 

Officers have checked surveillance video from the credit union and are checking the Salina Police Department's Flock traffic cameras for possible leads. 

Hanus encouraged anyone in the area with surveillance cameras to check their video for suspicious persons or activity. If anyone has alerts or sees suspicious activity on their surveillance videos, they are asked to contact the Salina Police Department's Detective Division.

Hanus said the Salina Police Department has been in contact with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation concerning this incident. 

He noted that while the department is not able at this time to definitively say who committed the theft, one possibility detectives are checking into is that an organized crime group was involved. Hanus explained that information shared amongst law enforcement agencies indicates that such organized crime groups are targeting ATMs across the United States, including in Kansas. Part of the groups' modus operandi, or MO, is to steal early 2000s Ford F250s to use in such heists.

The winning sculpture traditionally is purchased by the City of Salina for up to $15,000 and permanently placed in a public location within the city.

Then, the Wedel Financial and Salina Downtown Inc.'s Weekender Concert will begin at 2 p.m. at the City Lights Stage. Visual Lies is scheduled to open for the Sunset Sinners.

Santa Fe Weekender: Free music, public art, and fun!

MARION COUNTY - Far eastern Marion County was rattled by two small earthquakes Thursday night.

The first, a 2.8 magnitude quake, struck at 9:27 p.m. Thursday, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. It was centered just west of the Marion-Chase county line, near the east end of 220th Street.

The second, a 2.2 magnitude quake, struck at 9:40 p.m. Thursday. It was located just west of the first quake.

Two small quakes shake eastern Marion County Thursday night

On Tuesday at 10:26 p.m., officers with the Salina Police Department responded to the Heather Ridge Apartments in the 2100 block of E. Crawford Street regarding multiple gunshots being fired. 

On arrival, officers found several shell casings outside and directly to the west of the apartment complex. 

At the same time, officers responded to the 700 block of Moundview Avenue, where a bullet had entered a residence. It is believed one of the fired rounds struck the home. No one was injured by the gunfire. 

Witnesses reported seeing two males, on the property of E. Crawford, who fled on foot after the rounds were fired.

 </figure>CrimestoppersOn Tuesday at 10:26 p.m., officers with the Salina Police Department responded to the Heather Ridge Apartments in the 2100 block of E. Crawford Street regarding multiple gunshots being fired. On arrival, officers found several shell casings outside and directly to the west of the apartment complex. At the same time, officers responded to the 700 block of Moundview Avenue, where a bullet had entered a residence. It is believed one of the fired rounds struck the home. No one was injured by the gunfire. Witnesses reported seeing two males, on the property of E. Crawford, who fled on foot after the rounds were fired.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about shots fired incident

Salina Presbyterian Manor recently held its Volunteer Appreciation event, to honor and thank all those who give their time to make the senior living community shine.

A group of 35 volunteers were at the event in the Ivory Keys Cafe at Salina Presbyterian Manor for an afternoon of fun which included food, fellowship and awards presented by Jeni Blair, life enrichment director, Dave Parker, Chaplain, and Melissa Brumbaugh, executive director.

“It was so nice to visit with the volunteers and thank them personally for their time and energy,” said Jenni Jones, director of giving. “I loved hearing their stories on why they like to volunteer whether it’s delivering mail, helping at Mass or church services, having one-on-one visits, or bringing their four-legged best friends to brighten our residents’ day.”

One of the volunteers who visits the manor with her four-legged friend is Susan Grosser. Grosser and her Golden Retriever, Riley, were certified as a therapy team in 2018.

We’ve made so many wonderful friends, both residents and staff, and always look forward to our visits there,” says Grosser whose parents used to live at the manor. Riley is a pretty laidback guy and loves saying hi to his friends, then lays down on the floor and takes a nap in each room while I chat! He especially likes to nap at the feet of one of his most special friends. They have quite the connection.”

Riley also enjoys getting treats from residents who keep them for him in their rooms. It may be just one part of what excites him about visiting.

“Riley knows when I get out his special red bag and his therapy harness that we’re going to “work” and he gets so excited,” Grosser explained.

Grosser is one of about 80 volunteers at Salina Presbyterian Manor. Awards were handed out for Distinguished Service, Distinguished Leadership, Rising Star, Adult Volunteer Group, PAWS for Salina Presbyterian Manor, and Volunteer of the Year Resident &amp; Employee. Among the highlights of the event were the heartfelt words of Ed Viar, who received special recognition for transporting residents to off campus church services. He explained how much it means to him to be able to pick up the residents that attend Sunrise Presbyterian Church and transport them. He said getting to know the resident on a personal level has meant the world to him.

Salina Presbyterian Manor staff were there to thank the volunteers as they walked by. 

“That was pretty special,” said Jones. “You could tell that made the volunteers feel appreciated.

I’m a senior in high school, and I’m enrolled in a personal finance class. From your perspective, should I be worried about the national debt being over $30 trillion, and should this affect a person’s overall personal finance strategy?

I’m sorry you have to worry about such things at your age. I, personally, have a long history of fretting about, and alternately being angry about, the national debt being out of control. This is mainly because it represents a Congress that’s out of control, and the fact that the American people don’t seem to have enough backbone to vote these clowns out. So, they keep spending like there’s no tomorrow. There’s probably a tipping point somewhere, but the good news is it hasn’t happened yet.

I’m with you on this when it comes to being concerned, though. I think the entire situation represents a lack of discipline on the American people’s part&nbsp;and&nbsp;on the part of our elected officials. It’s pitiful, and it’s outrageous. Now, does it affect my investing? Not one bit. I invest based on good long-term track records, because the national debt has been out of control for as long as I’ve been alive.

Here’s the thing. If everything did finally fall in on itself, there’s nothing at all you could’ve&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/daves-investing-philosophy" target="_blank">invested</a>&nbsp;in from a financial point that would protect you. So, if I were you, I wouldn’t worry too much about it, or walk around scared that I was suddenly about to lose everything. In my mind, it’s going to take more than a crop of inept, or dishonest, politicians—and there have been bunches of those, from both sides of the aisle—to sink this thing called America. I believe the country, and its people, are much more resilient than that.

You’re a thoughtful young man, Chris. But I want you to remember one very important thing. What happens in&nbsp;your&nbsp;house carries much more weight in your life than what happens in Washington, D.C., or the White House. That means being personally responsible for yourself and your money. Live on a written budget, save money and stay away from debt. If you do those things, I think you’re going to be okay!
