Area students named to SNHU President's List

HASTINGS, Neb. - Hastings College held its 137th Commencement on May 13. During the ceremony, the college awarded degrees to 211 undergraduates and seven Master of Arts in Teaching graduates. Graduates represented 19 states and 13 countries.

The student speaker was graduating senior Emma Downing, a history and Spanish major from Colorado Springs, Colorado. 

Graduation honors are awarded to those students with outstanding academic records in their undergraduate work. Degrees with distinction are awarded as follows: Summa Cum Laude, overall GPA of 3.97 or higher; Magna Cum Laude, overall GPA of 3.94 or higher; and Cum Laude, overall GPA of 3.85 or higher.

Students who graduated with High Distinction in their major(s) earned a 3.85-4.0 grade point average, while students awarded Distinction earned at least a 3.7 grade point average in their major(s).

All degrees are bachelors degrees unless noted.

With more than 2,000 people already registered for November's Salina Crossroads Marathon, race organizers jokingly posted on their Facebook page earlier this week that race entries were capped at 35,000!

The inaugural race in November 2022 had 817 registered runners from 30 states. Visit Salina, a division of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, estimated that the event had a local economic impact of $446,296. Additionally, $25,340 was donated to youth sports in Saline County.

So when organizers started planning for the November 2023 event, they set a registration goal of 1,000. That goal was exceeded in early April.

On Wednesday, race organizers reported that more than 2,100 people had registered for the upcoming Nov. 4 race, which also serves as a Boston Marathon qualifier.

"We are excited to have over 2,100 runners with runners registered from all fifty states, Canada, and Mexico," Co-Race Director Daniel Craig told Salina Post. "This year the start/finish for the Salina Crossroads Marathon will be at the City Light Stage which will allow for additional parking as well as plenty of space for the post-race celebration. We are excited for the start/finish to be at City Light Stage as it will allow for continued growth as we strive to become one of the premier marathons in the Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas region."

Also on Wednesday, race organizers announced that the downtown host hotel, Homewood Suites by Hilton, 115 E. Mulberry, was sold out, and provided links to other lodging locations in Salina.

"We have a lot of runners registered for the half marathon and marathon. We hope that as it gets closer to race day that we will get a lot of runners and walkers signing up for the 5K and the new Half Mile Kids Run. We think those races will be a fun way for everyone to come out and be a part of a fun marathon weekend," Craig said.

He also praised the efforts of volunteers for bringing back some runners for a second race.

"We appreciate Sgt. Chad McCary and Brent Buchwald who helped make some great improvements to this year's course. Having a flat and scenic course along with amazing volunteers is one of reasons many runners have mentioned is why they are returning to Salina Crossroads again this year," Craig said.

Saline County Engineer Justin Mader announced this afternoon that Falun Road between S. Burma Road and S. Halstead Road has been reopened.

That stretch of road was closed in early February for a bridge replacement project.

🎥UPDATE: Two large Space X loads back up westbound I-70 traffic

As forecast, showers and storms were widely scattered on Thursday. Rainfall varied from a trace in multiple counties to 0.78 of an inch in Saline County. Some reporting locations saw no rain.

A mere 0.17 was reported at the Salina Regional Airport.

Moran announces $4.7M federal investment for K-State Salina

The Salina Public Schools Board of Education and NEA-Salina met for their first round of contract negotiations for the 2023-2024 school year.&nbsp;

The teams set ground rules, issued their first proposals and tentatively agreed to remove the sunset provision on the ability to work from home on teacher workdays as well as some grammatical clean-up of the agreement.

Both sides will meet for their second round on June 7 at 3 p.m. in the SEC room at the district office, 1511 Gypsum Avenue.

USD 305, NEA Salina contract negotiations for 2023-24 begin

There's a new male in town and keepers at Rolling Hills Zoo (RHZ) hope sisters Zalika and Kamali tickle his fancy.

RHZ announced today that Oskar, a three-year-old male African lion, has completed his 30-day quarantine and has joined the zoo's Pride of the Prairie exhibit.

Initially, Oskar, and nine-year-old sisters Zalika and Kamali will be kept separated as they begin to get acquainted. Oskar will spend the first few days adjusting to his new home.

"It may take time before he is comfortable leaving his sleeping quarters, so guests are asked to be patient and kind with him. Once he is ready, guests will find him in the day room while the females are outside, rotating daily to allow each time outside while they get to know each other. This 'dating' process will take time, but once the keepers feel comfortable with putting them together, they will do so," the zoo explained in a news release.

At three years of age, Oskar is just reaching sexual maturity and unlikely to breed until the age of four or five, RHZ noted.

Phone books, zoo kongs, and scents are among Oskar's favorite enrichment items.

“Oskar really enjoys shredding paper and cardboard boxes, and loves rhino hay, rolling around in it and getting all stinky,” said Siarra Abker, RHZ vet tech. “Motivated by food, Oskar is eager to train and happy to do anything his keepers ask.”

And apparently Oskar isn't just a tough guy.

“While still trying to prove he is a big tough lion to everyone, as well as himself, Oskar is a sweetheart and enjoys spending time with his keepers, but only on his terms,” Abker said.

Oskar was quite shy when he was born, but has since become playful and confident. Nonetheless, he remains hesitant of new things and is taking his time checking out the Pride of the Prairie and warming up to new people, according to information from RHZ.

Oskar was one of two cubs in his litter when born at the Denver Zoo in 2020. His mother, Kamara, and father, Tobias, along with his sister, Araali, still live at the Denver Zoo. There, his pride consisted of seven lions: four females and three males. Oskar's half-brother, Tatu (both offspring of Tobias), recently made the move to the Topeka Zoo.

Monday's Memorial Day holiday brings with it local government closings.

City of Salina offices will be closed Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. The Household Hazardous Waste facility and Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center will be closed Monday. The city landfill will close at 2 p.m. Monday.

City offices and facilities will resume their regular hours beginning Tuesday.

Additionally, there will not be a Salina City Commission meeting on Monday.

Saline County offices and facilities also will be closed Monday. County offices and facilities will resume regular hours on Tuesday.

The Salina Public Library also will be closed Monday and will resume regular hours on Tuesday.

An Abilene man wanted on multiple warrants was arrested after allegedly fleeing police in north Salina Thursday night.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. Thursday, an officer noticed a Ford F-150 pickup traveling southbound in the 1600 block of N. Ninth Street at a higher-than-posted rate of speed, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The pickup turned west onto Inez Avenue. As the officer was initiating a traffic stop, the pickup stopped abruptly and the driver fled on foot, Forrester said.

A passenger in the pickup identified the driver as Jayreece Jones, 27, of Abilene. Jones was known to the officer to have several outstanding warrants, Forrester said.

K-9 Rodi was brought in to track Jones, who was found a couple of blocks away hiding under a camper.

Jones was arrested on multiple outstanding warrants from Saline County District Court, multiple outstanding warrants from Salina Municipal Court, and a warrant from Dickinson County. Additionally, he was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

Several victims reported while they were golfing, an unknown subject entered their vehicles. The suspects stole the victim’s wallets, which contained financial cards. The cards were later used at multiple retail establishments in Salina. Several transactions totaling more than $4,200 were made with the stolen cards. Surveillance video shows the suspects below using the stolen financial cards to make purchases.

So, take a deep breath and calm down. Everything’s going to be okay.

Studies have shown us it takes $3 of gain in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/best-investment-strategy" target="_blank">an investment</a>&nbsp;to emotionally offset $1 of loss. Our brains record negative things at a much greater rate than they do positive things, and it takes a lot of emotion to recover from that. Your investments may be down a little. If you’ve got $1 million in there, it may be worth $900,000 right now. Next year, it’s liable to bounce up to $1.1 million. In other words, your entire retirement savings is not “eroding away.”

Have you ever heard people say they lost all their money in the stock market? Well, that’s mathematically impossible, unless you put all your money into one company, and that company completely closed and was worth zero. Remember Enron? ABILENE - This weekend as many families venture out to decorate graves in honor of Memorial Day, one family is celebrating its heritage in a different fashion.

The great-great-grandson of Abilene founders Timothy and Eliza Hersey recently visited Abilene. And, thanks to the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau Tourism Assistant Sharolyn Adams, he and his new bride enjoyed a small and special wedding ceremony. Geral and Kay Hersey were wed Thursday evening with the Honorable Judge John Barker officiating at the site of Geral’s grandparents’ former dugout home (beneath the present-day Lebold Mansion). Adams and CVB director Julie Roller Weeks served as witnesses to the momentous occasion.

Geral and his new bride, Kay, reside in Washington State and traveled to Abilene as part of their vacation. While in town, they made several stops, including a stay at Abilene’s Victorian Inn Bed &amp; Breakfast and a visit to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.

“We’re honored they chose Abilene for their special ceremony,” Roller Weeks said. “The CVB is committed to assisting visitors to our five-star community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a special day for the Herseys.”

Fun fact: Eliza Hersey receives credit for giving Abilene its name from the book of Luke 3:1 in the Bible, where the name Abilene appeared, loosely meaning “city of the plains.”

KDHE: Marion Lake under blue-green algae warning

DICKINSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations in connection with arson and theft.

Just before 5:30a.m. Wednesday, police and fire crews responded to a house fire in the 300 block of NE Eighth Street in Abilene, according to a media release.

Moments later, police and fire were dispatched to a second house fire in the 500 block of SE Sixth Street in Abilene. Investigators have determined both fires were intentionally set.

Just before 6a.m. that same morning deputies responded to a burglary at Liberty Store, 601 S. Buckeye Avenue.

Officers determined the two fires and burglary were connected and committed by the same suspect. Just before 8a.m., officer located and arrested 25-year-old&nbsp;Dai’Reese M. Gelinas of Abilene in a home in the 100 block of S. Cedar Street.
