Salina Parks and Rec to dedicate Great Plains Playground at Lakewood

The horses are out! They’re all over town!&nbsp;

But these horses aren’t running away; they are standing strong for their community.&nbsp;

These are dala horses, the beautifully decorated horse-shaped figures that are a symbol of Sweden. Today we will visit a rural Kansas community that is using dala horses to beautify the town and engage its people.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tami Howland is president of Olsburg’s Kansas PRIDE program, now known as Kansas Community Empowerment. Howland also works at Union State Bank in Olsburg.&nbsp;

The town was founded in 1880 by an immigrant Swede named Ole Thrulson. Originally named Olesburgh, the name was later shortened to Olsburg. One Swedish tradition is the display of dala horses: wooden carvings of horses that are painted and displayed outside homes and businesses. &nbsp;

PRIDE members wanted to enhance the community. In 2021, they received an anonymous donor’s gift to be used for beautification.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Using the Swedish theme, PRIDE members decided to launch a public art project consisting of large dala horses to be decorated by local businesses and organizations.&nbsp;&nbsp;The project received a matching grant from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission, which is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. PRIDE members contacted a Nebraska company that produced fiberglass dala horses 3 1/2 feet tall.&nbsp;

“We gave one to every business, church, and the school in town. We supplied paint and brushes for them to decorate each one as they wanted,” Howland said. “The only rules were: Nothing political, and nothing vulgar.”&nbsp;

In 2021, Olsburg PRIDE ordered 25 dala horses. “Immediately, we needed more,” Howland said. The horses were individually painted by each business or organization and then clear-coated by a nearby auto restoration company before being displayed outside at each site. Each horse also was named.&nbsp;

Then people learned that they could buy and paint their own. “Some people said, `But I’m not Swedish,’” Howland said. “Then they saw how different people were using them and the idea took off.”&nbsp;

“The creativity has been amazing,” she said. “Everybody had such great ideas.”&nbsp;

A red-white-and-blue horse named Liberty stands in front of the American Legion.&nbsp;

The one by the school is decorated like the school mascot.&nbsp;

The one named Stamps is at the post office.&nbsp;

The local veterinarian has one named Cupcake, who is displayed tied to a gate.&nbsp;

The one named Esther Williams is on a surfboard above the swimming pool.&nbsp;

The list goes on and on.&nbsp;&nbsp;It appears the citizens of Olsburg are having too much fun with this project.&nbsp;

Each one is individually and intricately hand painted by local people, including Howland herself.&nbsp;&nbsp;“I love to paint, it’s a fun thing for me,” she said. The painters range in age from six to 90. The horses are extraordinarily well-done. They are really works of art.&nbsp;

“It’s amazing how much talent comes out in our small town,” Howland said. Not only are the dala horses populated throughout Olsburg, several are displayed near homes in the outlying region. Howland’s cousin has one in Nebraska and another is enroute to Oklahoma.&nbsp;

In December 2022, the first eight came back from clear-coating. Howland put them out as a Christmas display, placing them in a line followed by a miniature sleigh and Santa. The pictures she posted got a response from as far away as Sweden itself.&nbsp;

“I’m so proud of the way our community has embraced this idea,” she said. “It makes my heart smile.”&nbsp;

Now there are 47 dala horses in town. “We have more dala horses per capita than anywhere in the nation,” Howland said.&nbsp;

That’s impressive for a rural community such as Olsburg, population 218 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Sunday, May 28, saw the first commercial flight of China’s home-built C919 airliner. China Eastern Airlines flight MU9191 flew from Shanghai to Beijing on Sunday (10:45am–1:10pm) and returned back to Shanghai later that afternoon. The C919 is China’s first commercial large jetliner, produced by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC).

While on a short lecture visit at a Chinese university in 2017, I watched the noon news broadcast and saw footage of the C919 as it made its maiden test flight. According to Reuters, the C919 was certified for commercial flight by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) last September.

It has been 14 years since COMAC began development on it’s C919 single-aisle passenger jet. The C919 is designed to rival the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320. Flying up to 3,000 miles, the C919 can carry from 156 to 168 passengers. The C919 provides both economy and business seating. Its cost is about $90 million, slightly less than the Boeing 737 MAX.

COMAC has been producing the ARJ21 regional jetliners that are already in service. These are smaller planes that are more in competition with Bombardier (Canada) and Embraer (Brazil). The ARJ 21 regional jet accommodates 95 passengers and can fly up to 2300 miles. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Recently and American television news network ran a brief piece interviewing a commercial figure claiming that China was stealing all the technology to produce their new aircraft. No details were provided because this is simply a false statement.

Just as U.S. Lockheed buys jet engines from Rolls Royce in Canada, Boeing and Airbus also rely on subcontractors worldwide for specialty equipment.

COMAC relies on Western countries to supply certain components for both engines and avionics. G.E. Aeronautics supplies jet engines worldwide. The international company Safran provides electro-optic and navigation systems. Honeywell International also produces thousands of products used in aircraft and airports worldwide.

More than two decades ago, China moved to recognizing the value of holding intellectual property rights and in 2019 surpassed the U.S. in number of science patents.

China’s high-speed train technology has been first in the world for several decades, and it is recognized that the U.S. will likely never be able to build and operate even one high-speed route.

Other Far East and European countries likewise lead the U.S. in some technologies. Most Americans recognize that Japan is well ahead of the U.S. in electric car technology.

U.S. officials also recently announced that China’s hypersonic glide vehicle technology is more advanced than systems in the U.S.

One among many factors for the rise of COMAC is China’s desire to become less reliant on other countries for aerospace technology. At the end of 2022, COMAC had received orders for 1,035 C919 airliners. However, Boeing and to a lesser extent Airbus will remain a major portion of China’s commercial aircraft for some time to come. Hainan Airlines, China’s fourth largest airline company, currently has a total 342 planes that included 260 Boeing and 64 Airbus airliners at the end of 2022. The HNA Group recently signed to purchase 60 COMAC C919 passenger jets and 40 ARJ21 regional jetliners.

Today’s beginning of the C919 as a functioning large airline carrier in China will allow COMAC to build its record in operational safety and maintenance.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

According to Reuters, China is aiming for COMAC to provide 10 percent of China’s domestic flights by 2035. COMAC still is in an early stage of building production capacity and plans to have a capacity to manufacture 150 C919 aircraft each year by 2028. Therefore, it will take many decades before COMAC can build up production capacity to become a major international competitor with Airbus and Boeing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

ED. FRONTLINES: Airbus, Boeing...and now COMAC

One year ago: President Joe Biden sought to comfort a city grieving the killings of 19 elementary school pupils and two teachers at the hands of a lone gunman in Uvalde, Texas. Faced with chants of "do something" as he departed a church service to meet privately with the families, Biden responded: "We will." The Justice Department said it would review the law enforcement response to the shooting. Thousands of Israeli nationalists, some of them chanting "Death to Arabs," paraded through the heart of the main Palestinian thoroughfare in Jerusalem's Old City, in a show of force that risked setting off a new wave of violence in the tense city. MANHATTAN – Despite rapid increases in input costs, widespread drought and low yield, net income on Kansas farms held strong in 2022, according to a report from the&nbsp;<a href="https://agmanager.info/kfma" target="_blank">Kansas Farm Management Association</a>.&nbsp;

In fact, KFMA executive director Mark Dikeman said he is “relieved that income was as high as it was” considering the adversity that many Kansas farmers faced during the past year.&nbsp;

This year, Dikeman notes, Kansas net farm income came in at $164,914, just below a five-year average of $173,660, but well ahead of the five-year period between 2016-2020 when the state’s net farm income averaged $99,497.&nbsp;

A year ago, KFMA reported net farm income at $319,180, spurred by a combination of farmers buying inputs at lower prices and capitalizing on strong crop yields, robust grain prices and pandemic-related government payments. It was the highest net farm income average ever recorded in Kansas, according to KFMA, which has kept records since 1970.&nbsp;

The report on 2022 reflects average net farm income for 834 Kansas farms working with KFMA economists in six regions of the state. KFMA economists work individually with farm families to provide farm-specific production and financial management information that can be used in making decisions.&nbsp;

By region, KFMA reported 2022 net farm income in Kansas as follows:&nbsp;

Dikeman said the numbers indicate a good year for Kansas farmers despite high input costs and low state average yields for fall harvested crops due to widespread drought.&nbsp;

“Along with strong prices, government payments and crop insurance helped to supplement low production among crop producers,” he said.&nbsp;

Government payments accounted for 15.3% ($25,236) and net crop insurance – payments received minus premiums paid – accounted for 56.3% ($92,781) of net farm income. The USDA’s Emergency Relief Program, which covers losses to crops due to a qualifying natural disaster, contributed an average $17,450 for those who qualified.&nbsp;

Dikeman said crop insurance and government payments made up 127.1% of net farm income in KFMA’s northwest region, and 126.5% in the southeast region. Meanwhile, farmers in the northeast region – which did not suffer as much from drought – paid more in crop insurance than they received.&nbsp;

“To me, that says the federal safety net worked in a year with difficult conditions,” Dikeman said.&nbsp;

High grain prices and drought that reduced the availability of forages hit Kansas livestock producers hard. Dikeman said KFMA’s numbers indicate a 13.2% increase in feed costs compared to 2021.&nbsp;

“However,” he noted, “the value of livestock production increased 5.1% to $137,959 (after feed cost is removed) to create profit opportunities for livestock producers.”&nbsp;

Dikeman said KFMA’s annual report paints a picture of Kansas agriculture, but each farmer needs to make decisions based on their own farm’s records on such factors as management strategies, production costs and market factors.&nbsp;

“A good set of records allows a farmer to identify their production costs, and provides a starting point for marketing planning and helps a farm manager understand their business better,” Dikeman said. “Investing time into this process is important to manage the volatility of today’s production and economic environment successfully.”&nbsp;

The second was a violent F4. It's track was 25 miles long and around 440 yards wide as it tore through Marion and Chase counties. This second twister destroyed 10 farms. On one of the farms, every building was swept away. The second twister killed two people and injured four.

The Sons of American Legion Squadron 62 and VFW Post 1432

Ann Mills-Griffiths will be the keynote speaker for the Memorial Day ceremony held at the Salina-Saline County War Memorial in Sunset Park, 700 Sunset Drive.

Mills-Griffiths serves as Chairman of the elected Board of Directors of the National League of POW/MIA Families. She served over 45 years leading the nonprofit, 501(c)3 humanitarian organization in Washington, DC. Having stepped aside from daily administration of the League’s national office on August 1, 2011, she has since focused primarily on policy, operations, and sustaining the League’s financial ability to press for and achieve accounting objectives. At the request of the Secretary of Defense, she also served on the Advisory Committee of the Defense Department’s 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Commemoration Commission. Mills-Griffiths is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the American Legion Auxiliary, the Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA), a Life Member of the DAV and VFW Auxiliaries, and is an Honorary Life Member of the Special Operations Association (SOA) and the Special Forces Association (SFA). She was the 2019 recipient of the VFW Americanism Award.

From 1980 through 1992, Mills-Griffiths represented the families’ views as a founding member of the POW/MIA Interagency Group (IAG), the US Government’s senior-level policy development and implementation mechanism for achieving accounting results in the humanitarian, step-by-step context of developing bilateral relations with Vietnam and restoring normal bilateral relations with Laos and Cambodia. She was instrumental in setting up high level negotiations between Vietnam and the United States in 1982-83. Since then, she has continued to represent the POW/MIA families and America’s missing personnel through direct contacts with US and foreign leaders.&nbsp;

Mills-Griffiths has met frequently with senior officials in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, as well as with Thai, Russian, Chinese and other diplomats and senior officials in an effort to expedite answers. As a recognized leader on POW/MIA issues and recipient of numerous honors, she also has appeared frequently before congressional committees and subcommittees, national and international broadcast media, participated for decades in policy forums dealing with Southeast Asia, and been called upon for advice and counsel by foreign nations facing their own personnel accounting issues.&nbsp;

Commander James B. Mills, USN[R], Mills-Griffiths’ brother, was listed as MIA on Sept. 21, 1966, when the Navy F4B on which he served as Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) disappeared on a night, low-flying bombing mission over North Vietnam. He was on his second tour, assigned to Fighter Squadron 21, USS Coral Sea. His remains were discovered in 2018 along the shallow coast of North Vietnam.

Special guests&nbsp;Salina Mayor Michael Hoppock, Dale Pugh (brother to Major Dennis Pugh, the only individual from Salina County still MIA), and Ambassador David Lambertson, the former U.S. Ambassador to Thailand &amp; Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State will also be in attendance.

Lunch will be held after the last ceremony at the VFW Post 1432, 1108 W. Crawford.

Several Memorial Day ceremonies set for Salina

MANHATTAN –&nbsp;Rabbits are a common invader of home gardens, especially when plants flower in spring. Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said there are many common-sense ways to keep the hungry critters out.&nbsp;

“This time of year, rabbits gravitate to young vegetables and flowers,” Upham said. “But there are some vegetables that are rarely bothered, including potatoes, tomatoes, corn, squash, cucumbers and some peppers.”&nbsp;

Upham said some methods for keeping rabbits away include:&nbsp;

Fencing is often the quickest and easiest method of control. Upham recommended the fence be at least two feet tall with a fine mesh of one inch or less. Fencing support can be provided by a variety of products, including electric fence posts. However, fencing may not be a viable choice based on the desired appearance of the garden.&nbsp;

Floating row cover is a light woven material that can be placed over plants yet still allows light, water and air to come through.&nbsp;

“Though most often used to promote early growth by keeping plants warmer than normal, it can also help protect young plants from insects and wildlife,” Upham said.&nbsp;

Although commonly suggested for rabbit control, repellants must be re-applied frequently. Some can also be poisonous and cannot be used on plants intended for human consumption, Upham warned.&nbsp;

Upham said live traps are usually recommended when the rabbit can be moved to a rural area several miles away from where they were initially caught.&nbsp;

“A number of baits can be used to entice the rabbit to enter the trap, including a tightly rolled cabbage leaf held together by a toothpick. However, rabbits often avoid baits if other attractive food is available.”&nbsp;

A motion-activated sprinkler can be attached to a garden hose, releasing a short burst of water upon motion. Upham suggests picking a product that advertises it can protect at least 1000 square feet: “Such products are available from Contech, Orbit and Havahart,” he said.&nbsp;

 </figure>K-State Research and Extension News Service&nbsp;MANHATTAN –&nbsp;Rabbits are a common invader of home gardens, especially when plants flower in spring. Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said there are many common-sense ways to keep the hungry critters out.&nbsp;“This time of year, rabbits gravitate to young vegetables and flowers,” Upham said. “But there are some vegetables that are rarely bothered, including potatoes, tomatoes, corn, squash, cucumbers and some peppers.”&nbsp;Upham said some methods for keeping rabbits away include:&nbsp;Fencing&nbsp;Fencing is often the quickest and easiest method of control. Upham recommended the fence be at least two feet tall with a fine mesh of one inch or less. Fencing support can be provided by a variety of products, including electric fence posts. However, fencing may not be a viable choice based on the desired appearance of the garden.&nbsp;Floating Row Cover&nbsp;Floating row cover is a light woven material that can be placed over plants yet still allows light, water and air to come through.&nbsp;“Though most often used to promote early growth by keeping plants warmer than normal, it can also help protect young plants from insects and wildlife,” Upham said.&nbsp;Repellants&nbsp;Although commonly suggested for rabbit control, repellants must be re-applied frequently. Some can also be poisonous and cannot be used on plants intended for human consumption, Upham warned.&nbsp;Trapping&nbsp;Upham said live traps are usually recommended when the rabbit can be moved to a rural area several miles away from where they were initially caught.&nbsp;“A number of baits can be used to entice the rabbit to enter the trap, including a tightly rolled cabbage leaf held together by a toothpick. However, rabbits often avoid baits if other attractive food is available.”&nbsp;Sprinkler&nbsp;A motion-activated sprinkler can be attached to a garden hose, releasing a short burst of water upon motion. Rabbits in the garden? K-State's Upham offers effective protection methods

You’ve heard of the blues, jazz, and ragtime. Barrelhouse Piano shares origins with those styles.

Pat O'Connor, Wichita bluesman and historian, will take participants down to the turpentine camps and railroad towns where that music began in the early twentieth century. 

This two-hour presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. June 5 in the Watson Room of the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.&nbsp;Admission is $20.

O'Connor will share the history of barrelhouse with examples from major players. You need not be a pianist to attend, but keyboard players can see the chord charts and exercises to come up with their own arrangements. The Stiefel has several keyboards for those who want to try it out that day.&nbsp;

Named for the houses where the barrels (probably of whiskey) could be found, barrelhouse piano is a two-handed style of playing early jazz, ragtime, and blues. 

“Each hand acts separately, but the two hands come together just in time,” O'Connor said.

O’Connor will include a brief history of Black music in Kansas, showing the importance of Black performers in the state. This will give a feel for the people behind the barrelhouse music and highlight their influence and contributions.

O’Connor has played piano and Hammond B-3 organ in rock bands and solo from L.A. to London since the late 1960s and has a forthcoming book on Wichita Blues from University Press of Mississippi.

TOPEKA – You have heard of the Nigerian prince scam, but you probably do not associate the term "pig butchering" with investment fraud. 

Like a hog fattened before the slaughter, perpetrators of these scams slowly build trust with their targets before “butchering” them with a final fraud and walking away with the victim’s hard-earned money. 

The Office of the Kansas Securities Commissioner, a division of the Kansas Insurance Department, warns that pig butchering scams are one of fastest-growing investment frauds in the United States. According to the FBI's Internet Crimes Complaint Center (IC3), investment fraud, including pig butchering scams, totaled $3.31 billion in reported losses in 2022.

Pig butchering scams typically unfold in stages. Scammers reach out to prospective victims unexpectedly through texts or messaging apps, often with an unusual explanation for contacting them. Fraudsters engage victims in non-investment-related conversations to build trust over time and gather information for manipulation. 

Once scammers establish rapport, they gradually shift conversations to investment topics. They convince their victims to let them invest their money in seemingly legitimate ventures, often via phony brokerage accounts or cryptocurrency platforms. As the scam matures, fraudsters pressure victims to deposit larger sums after faking initial investment gains. Once the large deposit is made, the fraud is complete, and the scammer disappears with the money.

“Pig butchering scams are a sophisticated take on the romance scam and are often targeted at those who are more isolated and therefore more vulnerable,” said Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “Protect yourself by ignoring unsolicited offers, and be on alert for anyone offering investment opportunities via text or messaging app.”

The Kansas Wesleyan Marketing and Communications Office captured a pair of Communicator Awards, which are respected national honors, earlier this month. KWU won Awards of Excellence, the organization’s top-level honor, for feature articles written about Judge Angela Coble, ’94, and Stefanie Milam, ’02.

“Our team continues to do great work,” said Brad Salois, director of marketing and communications. “These stories are reflective of our storytelling ability, an ability honed not only by years of experience, but by a conscious choice to dig into the ‘why’ of the KWU experience and share the results. This decision has driven much of what we’ve done for the past three years, and we’re grateful that choice has been honored with these awards.”

Jean Kozubowski, current assistant director of marketing and communications, penned the Coble article for the Fall 2022 Contact magazine, while former Associate Coordinator Karen Bonar wrote the story on Milam for the Spring 2022 edition. It is far from the first major recognition for Kozubowski, who has earned multiple statewide awards for writing and design, as well as a top-10 newspaper front page distinction nationally. Kozubowski was a desk editor and reporter for area newspapers, including the Hutchinson News and Salina Journal, for several years before joining Kansas Wesleyan.

Some of the other universities to win Awards of Excellence this year include Michigan State, George Mason, Florida, North Texas and New Mexico.

The awards mark the 10th&nbsp;and 11th&nbsp;major honors, nine of which have been national recognitions, for KWU’s MARCOM staff since May 2020.

HERINGTON - The Herington Post Office will be getting a new name on Tuesday, one that honors an area Army chaplain who died in a prisoner of war camp during the Korean War.

Thanks to a bill championed by First District Congressman Tracey Mann, the Herington Post Office will be renamed the "Captain Emil J. Kapaun Post Office Building."

Emil Kapaun was born and raised in nearby Pilsen on a family farm. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1940 and joined the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps in 1944, where he served his country in World War II and the Korean War. He died in a prisoner of war camp on May 23, 1951, at only 35 years old. Kapaun was awarded a Bronze Star and a Medal of Honor for his valiant service in the Korean War.

In March 2021, Kapaun's remains were identified in Hawaii, and in September 2021, brought back to his hometown of Pilsen in September for a celebration of life. The Roman Catholic Church is in the process of examining Father Kapaun's life to potentially canonize him as a saint.

Kapaun Memorial Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 712 N. Broadway in Herington.The Mass will be concelebrated by priests of the Salina and Wichita dioceses.The renaming dedication at the post office, 17 E. Main Street, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Mann and members of the Herington community are scheduled to speak during the dedication.Additionally, Kapaun's US Medal of Honor and Tsegeuk, Korean Medal of Honor will be on display across the street at the Dix Day Post 1281 VFW, 101 E. Main. Refreshments will be served at the VFW.The events are open to the public.
