A Salina woman was charged with arson after she allegedly set clothes on fire while she was inside her apartment.

On Monday, March 25 at about 9:50 a.m. Salina Police Officers and Salina Firefighters responded to the 1800 Block of S. Broadway Ave. for reports of an apartment fire with a person still inside the building.

When SFD firefighters arrived they found a 62-year-old female, located in a closet within her apartment.

"When they went to remove her, she became combative with firefighters and an officer assisted in securing her," SPD Captain James Feldman said. "She was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and an evaluation."

 It was determined she had allegedly intentionally set the clothing on fire in the apartment. Feldman said several other apartments were occupied at the time of the fire. 

SPD is referring this case to the Saline County Attorney’s office with the requested charge of aggravated arson.

Community Invited to Explore New Facility and Services at Open House Event

The Salina Grace Community Resource Center is set to open its doors at a new location on April 1, 2024, at 315 S. Broadway Blvd. in Salina, Kansas.

 To celebrate this milestone, the center will host an open house on Thursday, March 28, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Members of the community are invited to explore the facility and learn about the array of services that are offered.

The Community Resource Center first opened its doors to the public in January of 2022 at 142 S. Seventh St. in downtown Salina. The pilot project was launched in response to many ongoing discussions with police, human service agencies, and interested members of the community who were concerned about how to help those in need in our community. 

The idea was to have a single location where an individual in need of help could go and begin receiving immediate assistance with the help of a community navigator. While Salina has many resources in our community, they are spread out across town, and many individuals do not understand which services are provided by which organizations. 

The Community Resource Center’s goals are to remove the barriers of transportation limitations and a lack of knowledge about the types of assistance provided in the community while advocating for those who have trouble advocating for themselves.

In its first two years of operation, the Community Resource Center has positively impacted the lives of over 800 individuals in our community by providing the following services:

· Community Navigator - This service helps individuals get connected to the organizations best suited to help them with their specific situation.

· Coordination of Care – Many individuals require assistance from multiple organizations to address various challenges such as housing instability, mental health issues, substance abuse, lack of identification, and food insecurity. The resource center’s coordination of care supports individuals by facilitating collaboration among various agencies.

· Day Shelter – A safe space offering a respite from the elements and access to essential services for both the homeless and those in housing who are seeking community interaction.

· Hot, nutritious lunches are provided by Christ Cathedral’s Welcome Table with the support of a few other local churches.

The new location will allow services to be streamlined to ensure that individuals receive comprehensive support to address their diverse needs. Through a collaborative effort, the center will house service providers such as Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) which offers essential mental health support to individuals.

Additionally, People In Need (P.I.N.) will be moving into the new center. P.I.N. offers payee services to help individuals manage their finances effectively. P.I.N. works with people who are on fixed incomes such as Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) and Social Security Income (SSI).&nbsp; 

Their financial management services help individuals allocate their funds appropriately to pay for expenses such as rent, utilities, and food as a homelessness prevention measure enabling individuals to retain housing.

The establishment of the Salina Grace Community Resource Center has been made possible through the generous support of funding partners including, Salina Regional Health Center, The Earl Bane Foundation, Greater Salina Community Foundation, the City of Salina, Saline County, Trinity United Methodist Church, Sunrise Presbyterian Church, Dane Hansen Community Grant Fund, YW Legacy Fund, and numerous members of the community. 

Their contributions reflect a shared commitment to enhancing the well-being of Salina’s residents and ensuring that no one is left behind.

It is also important for the community to know that private donations are vital to helping meet the ongoing operational costs required to deliver these valuable services.

An Answers for Older Kansans Seminar Series "Scam Scan" hosted by North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging and Kansas Legal Services has begun. The seminars are free and open to the public.

Seminars began January 24 with great attendance, according to event organizers. With such high demand, seminars are continuing through April. 

Corinne Petrik, managing attorney at Kansas Legal Services, recent Sunflower Fair Presenter, and presenter for this Seminar Series said you won't want to miss this informational seminar.

City of Salina announces Ninth Street pavement repairs

A new exhibit,&nbsp;Step Up to the Task, opens April 12 at the<a href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/exhibits/current_exhibit_overview.html"> Smoky Hill Museum</a>. This exhibit tells a&nbsp;story about trailblazing Salina women.

Stories of progress and the march toward gender equality are the basis of this&nbsp;latest exhibit. Women who pushed against the norm often found themselves experiencing discrimination. Some of these trailblazers played a crucial role in paving the way for progress. In Salina, just like in other communities, there are shining examples of women who made waves, opened doors and broke through glass ceilings.

Visitors will learn of the struggles and triumphs of six local Salina women who helped break down discrimination towards women in the workplace. They are:

Smoky Hill Museum new exhibit focuses on trailblazing Salina women

Stutzmans Greenhouse and Garden Centers around Kansas, including in Great Bend, will soon come to life for the spring and summer planting seasons. But the plants do not just magically appear. Each Wednesday, Stutzmans is featured on KSN's&nbsp;Good Day Kansas&nbsp;program. Ben Miller, owner of Stutzmans, said it has been a good venue to show the public what his company is about.

"Most people, as they get to a store, really have no idea what the process was to get that plant to that growth and that look," he said. "We took the opportunity to take people behind the scenes and actually show that process: how we prune, how we trim, how we plant to really get to the final product as we ship it out to the stores."

Miller's cousin started Stutzmans in 1956. Miller and his wife got out of the dairy industry in 1980 and began working for the cousin. They purchased the company in 1985.

"It's been a journey," Miller said. "A lot of our growth through the 80s and 90s was through wholesale, shipping all over the central part of the country. In about 2001, we started branching out into our own additional retail garden centers, what we refer to as 'season garden centers.' We're open primarily from April through October. We often say 'freeze to freeze.' It has totally revolutionized our company. We're strictly retail and really focused on that now with no wholesale whatsoever."

Stutzmans now operates 11 garden centers in a 70-mile radius with stores in Great Bend, Salina, Newton, Pratt, and Sedgwick and Reno Counties. They go as far west as Dodge City. But everything begins at the home base in Pleasantview, five miles west of Hutchinson. Many of the plants in the regional garden centers got their start in the eight acres of greenhouse space in Pleasantview.

"After a spring season, we bring in all the managers from all the locations, and we literally sit down for about two days and go line-item by line-item and determine what we're going to grow in numbers the following year," Miller said.

The group also looks at new plant materials and how genetics will help those plants perform in the various Kansas weather conditions. The company strives to live up to its motto, "Stutzmans expects success."

"It's really important that we have what will perform well for our customers," said Miller. "That is the lifeblood of what makes everything happen for us."

Ahead of spring,&nbsp;seeds are planted in plug trays, with each tray containing 288 plugs. A seeder drops the seed in, and when the plant is large enough, it is transplanted into a container for resale. The trick is not planting everything at once.

"Most everything, except for perennials, would be multiple plantings so we have fresh material coming through about June 1," Miller said. "As we get into late June and July, we transition into what we often refer to as our 'heat-loving plant material.' It's not that we don't have some of those varieties in spring, but it's totally focused on plant material that really will perform in our Kansas heat."

Once ready to be transplanted, the seedlings are put into six packs or pots for transport to the garden centers. That used to be done by hand. Stutzmans recently purchased a Dutch-engineered robot that can now do the work more efficiently, increasing production from 300 flats by hand per hour to more than 700 in some instances.

"It literally extracts the seedling plug from a tray that was seeded and grown in that tiny plug, pops it out," Miller said. "then plants it out into the finished container, which may either be a six-pack flat of annuals, or we often also go into a four-and-a-half inch material, which is more of your premium annuals to produce vegetative cuttings."

The latest problem is what to do with all the extra flats coming down the line.

"We literally get trains of carts with product waiting to get laid down in the greenhouse," Miller said. "We have a few things we need to work out in that whole process, but we're really ecstatic with what we're seeing at this point."

Nothing at Stutzmans is a small operation. Patio plants are produced from cuttings and placed into 12 and 14-inch pots. Stutzmans will distribute approximately 35,000 of those plants to its garden centers each year. The number grows to approximately 50,000 for Mother's Day planters.

Stutzmans will host an open house and tours of its Pleasantview facility on April 6 from 9 a.m. to noon. Manager Jason French also hits the airwaves on Eagle Radio each Saturday morning for the Stutzmans Home and Garden Show. From seed to store: Stutzmans pulls back curtain on growing process

Road rage turned to shots fired early Sunday morning. A Salina resident reported that a truck followed him home around 1:20 a.m. on Sunday, March 24 and fired multiple shots before fleeing.

According to Salina Police Department Capt. James Feldman, the suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Anthony Nava, said that the 32-year-old victim "cut him off" on the roadway, leading to his aggression.

Nava allegedly followed the victim into the 1600 block of West Republic Avenue and began threatening him after exiting his Chevrolet Silverado truck.

"The victim thought he wanted to fight and tried to drive from the area," Feldman said. "As he passed the vehicle, he observed that the subject was armed and then [Nava] fired a handgun multiple times."

Feldman said a witness reported that they observed the vehicle leave the area at high speeds. Officers arrived in the area later and found multiple shell casings on the roadway and, after some investigation, located Nava's truck in the 500 block of Saturn Avenue.

Once officers began inquiring about the incident with Nava, Feldman said he admitted to unlawfully discharging a 9mm handgun and told officers that road rage caused his aggression.

Nava had discarded the gun near the shell casings in the north ditch of Republic Avenue. Officers arrested Nava and requested charges of aggravated assault and criminal discharge of a firearm.

The free, family-friendly event features more than 3,000 purple eggs filled with treats. Three hunts will be separated by age to ensure that each participant can collect as many eggs as possible. One egg in each age range contains a golden ticket for a special prize.

Ages 7-12 will begin at 9 a.m., ages 0-3 will start at 10 a.m. and ages 4-6 will begin at 11 a.m. Children will have the opportunity to take a photo with the K-State Salina Bunny.

The K-State Salina Purple Egg Hunt will be at the campus's Student Life Center, 2320 Centennial Road, and the event will go on rain or shine.Participants are encouraged to bring their own baskets.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Peabody public water supply system located in Marion County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.. If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. &nbsp;Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on March 26 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Downtown Salina welcomes back 'LIVE First Fridays' in April

KWU’s second Scholarship Gala will headline the events planned for Spring Alumni and Community Weekend, which will be held on campus from April 19-21.

The Scholarship Gala, one of KWU’s premier events, will be held April 20 at 5:30 p.m. At least 99% of Kansas Wesleyan students receive some sort of scholarship assistance, and the Gala is one of the primarily facilitators of that support.

Dr. Rebecca Chopp ’74 will be the Gala’s keynote speaker in her second appearance of the day. The former chancellor of the University of Denver will also speak at 11 a.m. in Peters Science Hall 201, where she will share about living with her diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment and the early stages of Alzheimer’s. She will sign copies of her book “Still Me: Accepting Alzheimer’s Without Losing Yourself,” published in February, after that talk.&nbsp;

Cruisin’ for a Cause, an event open to the public, will see cars of all shapes and sizes cruise Santa Fe Avenue from 6-8 p.m. April 19. Drivers can drop off nonperishable food items in front of Pioneer Hall. Classic car owners can display their cars in front of Pioneer Hall and socialize on the KWU lawn. All donations at the event will support the Salina Emergency Aid / Food Bank.

Eight athletic events – including alumni, developmental, varsity and spring football contests –are scheduled, as well. As always, anyone wearing KWU gear will receive free admission to any ticketed athletic contest.

The final performance of the university’s spring musical, “Working,” will also be a part of the weekend’s proceedings.

KWU Spring Scholarship Gala to kick off alumni and community weekend

A gust of wind sent a blizzard of white flakes past the picture window last weekend. The wall of white wasn’t snow, rather the fluttering petals from the blooming Callery pear tree in the front yard. Also known as a Bradford pear, it’s about as welcome today as a spring snowstorm.

The flowers are beautiful and Callery trees provide good shade in the summer, and it grows relatively quickly, which are all reasons it was planted in yards, parks and along roads throughout the eastern United States. Its blossoms can also emit a foul odor, and its fruit can stain whatever it happens to fall on, but neither is the reason why the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has taken the first step preventing the sale of the tree beginning in 2027. The hope is to eventually eliminate the tree from the state’s landscape.

At least its urban landscape. It turns out the qualities that made the Callery pear a good landscape tree also make it tough to keep it confined to where it’s planted. The white flowers it puts off in spring are a beacon to see just how far it’s spread. You can spot them easily along fence rows as you drive down the highway. They’ve become an invasive species that outcompete native species, especially in grasslands.

I’ve already spotted a couple of other plumes of white smoke on the horizon, and I know there will be many more on the calmer days ahead as ranchers burn their pastures ahead of grazing season. These fires speed the breakdown of dead plant material releasing essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Removing this blanket of vegetation also helps warm the soil, promoting new growth. And, perhaps most importantly, the periodic burning of grasslands controls the encroachment of invasive species like Callery pears or eastern red cedars.

Prairies have evolved to need fire, and without it the landscape would quickly be transformed into a scrub forest of low-value shrubs and trees. Initially sparked by lightning strikes, mankind soon discovered the value of fire. Native Americans were the first to use prescribed burns to attract bison.

Prescribed burns, like the ones ranchers use every spring, are an example of using a tool provided by Mother Nature to preserve a vital ecosystem quickly and efficiently. Burning also helps create more high-quality growth that allows grazing cattle to add weight faster, making it an environmentally friendly practice that also boosts the bottom line.

Black patches will soon dot the prairies, followed by a carpet of green grass reaching out through the ash and soot. There will be fewer Callery pears and other invasive species because of purposely set fires. Smoke billowing on the horizon is yet another sign of spring in Kansas. We can look forward to increasing warmth, new growth and, hopefully, ridding ourselves of the things that just don’t belong.
