Early this morning, the Kansas Wesleyan University security staff saw bubbling foam from the Pioneer Hall fountain, a now familiar sight for the university.

According to Salina Police Department sergeant Kyle Tonniges, this is not the first time someone vandalized the water feature with soap.

At around 5:30 a.m., Kansas Wesleyan staff found the water fountain overflowing with soap and reported to SPD that three suspects, one man and two women, visited the fountain around 2 a.m.

The three suspects drove away in a silver-white SUV and have not been identified by SPD.

According to Tonniges, the current damage is $1,500 but could be more if the drainage system needs to be repaired.

"If there's any sort of damage to the pipes or pumps, it would be a lot more, but at this point, it's got to be at least $1,500 to drain it, clean it and refill it," Tonniges said.

Tonniges said Kansas Wesleyan is reviewing footage of the incident and that the current damages are a felony offense.

Soap dumped into Kansas Wesleyan fountain, again

The Wichita National Weather Service predicts that much of central and southeast Kansas will experience a wintery mix of weather this weekend.

According to Wichita National Service meteorologist Eric Metzger, it would be the fifth year this part of the state sees winter weather during late October.

Metzger said that there is a 60% chance that Salinans will see winter weather this weekend.

"With a cold shot like this, with temperatures dropping as fast as they are, the main issue will be bridges and elevated surfaces," Metzger said. "So they will freeze, and they'll freeze quickly."

Most roads won't freeze this weekend due to residual ground heat from warmer days in the season — Metzger said there still may be icy spots from the expected snow and rain mix.

Slowing down on slick roads is recommended to stay safe while driving in adverse weather.

"Once they come up to a bridge, an elevated overpass, or anything like that, they need to slow down and take the foot off the gas," Metzger said. "So long as power is not going to the wheels, you really help yourself out on being able to maintain traction. But that's not a guarantee. If you hit a good slug of ice, even if you're coasting, you can still slide."

NWS Meteorologist predicts winter mix for Salina region this weekend

Salina Area Technical College and the Kansas National Guard’s Regional Training Institute in Salina are hosting a Veterans Day flag-raising ceremony starting at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, November 10 on the Salina Tech campus.

The ceremony will be followed by a free breakfast for active duty members of the military, veterans and their families.

At the event, a color guard from the Regional Training Institute will raise the flag in front of Salina Tech’s Building A, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, singing of the National Anthem and firing a ceremonial cannon.

This will be the eighth year Salina Tech and the Regional Training Institute have hosted such an event on the Salina Tech Campus. It will also be the first year the breakfast will be served in the college’s new student center in Building A.

While the outdoors portion of the event is open to everyone, the breakfast following is only for active duty members of the military, veterans and their families. Reservations for the breakfast MUST be made in advance and will be accepted on a first-come, first serve basis. Space is limited.

This comprehensive report delves into the city's current arts landscape, educational initiatives, public art programs, the importance of private and public support, and the economic contributions of the arts, highlighting the city's unique position as a standard-bearer for other communities.

Salina boasts a rich tapestry of cultural offerings, including the exceptional Theatre Salina, the Salina Symphony, and the Salina Art Center, among other gems like The Garage, Rolling Hills Zoo, Stiefel Theatre, and the Smoky Hill Museum, contribute significantly to the city's diverse cultural identity.

Public art initiatives, such as SculptureTour Salina and the Boom! Street Art and Mural Festival, have transformed Salina's public spaces, enhancing its visual appeal and infusing art into capital projects. Seventy-three percent of the survey respondents reported that they felt their interests were reflected in the public artwork around Salina and ninety percent said they had seen the downtown murals. Public comments included critical and constructive remarks that the SAH staff will continue to review and address.

An analysis of economic contributions from arts and culture in Salina, based on data from Americans for the Arts recently released “Arts &amp; Economic Prosperity VI” (AEP VI), and direct reporting from eight organizations receiving City of Salina funding, reveals the significant economic activity generated by the nonprofit arts and culture sector nationally. Audience spending, which is substantial, significantly contributes to the local economy, with out-of-county visitors representing half of the audience attendance.

The arts play a vital role in personal well-being, creativity, and the development of livable communities. They are integral to the community's quality of life and its economy. Half of local respondents in the AEP report stated they would have attended a cultural event in another community if it wasn’t available locally. 

“This further illustrates the importance of arts programming in Salina which keeps residents spending locally”, said Anderson and he added, “Not only does it help the local economy, but strong arts programming also creates a sense of community pride.”

Arts and culture flourish in Salina, driving positive economic impact

Are you an incumbent? I am not an incumbent. That being said, I do feel it's worth noting that I have run for office before.

Give a brief bio on yourself in 100 words or less: I am a first-generation Mexican-American who grew up in Salina, KS. I have spent my whole life in Kansas and have been a working-class citizen my whole life. My experiences have taught me how to lead, how to rally people together, and how to manage resources.

Please explain why you are running for city commission (in 500 words or less) I can sum up the reason I am running in four simple words: working-class material conditions. I am a firm believer that the majority of issues we face in the world today are directly related to the working class and their direct material conditions. I have lived through the issues that many people face day to day. I am running to help return power to the working-class people who have been left out of the political conversation.

2023 Election: Candidate for Salina City Comm., Robert Klingenberg 

Most of central Kansas saw inches of rainfall Wednesday, Oct. 25, with some regions of Kansas receiving almost eight inches.

The Salina region topped at 1.8 inches of rain in Marion and Assaria, but Emporia received almost eight inches of rain and parts of southwest Osage County got 9.35 inches.&nbsp;

Saline County Jail Activity, Oct. 26

Neal Bloomquist, assistant teaching professor of aviation at Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus, is the recipient of the 2023 Marchbanks Award.

The Marchbanks Award is presented annually to a faculty member at K-State Salina to recognize and honor exemplary service to students, commitment in the classroom and overall excellence in teaching.

Bloomquist currently instructs air carrier operations and crew resource management courses at K-State Salina. These topics are vital to pilot students' education — the courses support their training, ensure safety regulations are followed and provide the know-how to solve problems that arise during a flight. According to Bloomquist, many airlines spend time and resources ensuring that their pilots can work together, and coming out of college with that skill puts K-State Salina pilots ahead in their careers.

Bloomquist has more than 35 years of professional aviation experience.

"I give my students examples of what I have experienced in my pilot career," Bloomquist said. "They seem to gravitate to the first-hand experience that I have. I try to emphasize the importance of safety and following proper procedures, but also being able to think outside of the box. If you do what's safe, nobody will criticize you."

Bloomquist earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska in 1981 and a master's degree in aviation safety from the University of Central Missouri in 2013.

"We are thrilled to recognize Neal for the quality education he brings to his students," said Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina CEO and dean. "In our quest to develop the future leaders of tomorrow, it is imperative that our students learn from faculty who have many years of professional experience in industry. This type of education best serves students to be able to learn first-hand from the experts in their degree fields."

Bloomquist has worked for various aviation companies over the years, including time as a pilot for Frontier Airlines from 1985-1986 and United Airlines from 1987-2008. In his time with United Airlines, he was also the Boeing 737 flight simulator instructor. Bloomquist has experience as an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration and was an analyst for Lockheed Martin Aerospace from 2014-2016.

His experience training professional pilots led Bloomquist to realize that he could make a difference in the education of students who aspire to become pilots, which led to him joining K-State Salina's faculty in 2016.

"It's a big reason why I went into education and training future pilots," Bloomquist said. "I enjoyed helping my peers and ensuring the proper safety protocols were followed, but to be able to teach aspiring pilots in their initial flight education really motivated me."

Although Bloomquist doesn't have a view from the cockpit as the captain of an aircraft anymore, he says that he enjoys his time as an instructor now. Being able to share his experiences in aviation with students and seeing them go from not being able to operate a flight simulator without instruction to being able to do everything on their own is what he enjoys most about teaching.

Bloomquist named 2023 Marchbanks Award recipient at K-State Salina 

Salina Fire Department Battalion Chief Kirk Stover confirmed this morning that the perceived smoke reported by eyewitnesses on Center Street yesterday was actually caused by steam from a faulty water heater. ___________________________________________

The Salina Fire Department responded to a call about eyewitnesses seeing white smoke billowing from a house on Center Street at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at 328 Center Street.

The home's residents quickly escaped the house, including two dogs.

Salina Fire Department battalion chief Kirk Stover said there were no injuries, and after the department shut off the house's heating, cooling and electrical systems, the smoke stopped.

Stover said the cause of the smoke is still unknown, but house owner Linda Hardisty said it could have come from the house's water heating system.

Hardisty was notified of the smoke by a neighbor. She quickly got the other residents in the home and dogs out of the structure and dialed 9-1-1.

 </figure>UPDATED 10/26/2023 7:42 a.m.Salina Fire Department Battalion Chief Kirk Stover confirmed this morning that the perceived smoke reported by eyewitnesses on Center Street yesterday was actually caused by steam from a faulty water heater. ___________________________________________By SALINA POSTThe Salina Fire Department responded to a call about eyewitnesses seeing white smoke billowing from a house on Center Street at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at 328 Center Street.The home's residents quickly escaped the house, including two dogs.Salina Fire Department battalion chief Kirk Stover said there were no injuries, and after the department shut off the house's heating, cooling and electrical systems, the smoke stopped.Stover said the cause of the smoke is still unknown, but house owner Linda Hardisty said it could have come from the house's water heating system.Hardisty was notified of the smoke by a neighbor. She quickly got the other residents in the home and dogs out of the structure and dialed 9-1-1.Salina Post will update this story once more information becomes available.

Tabletop RPG dice rolls decided the disaster scenario for the Saline County Department of Emergency Management's training session last Thursday — a 4 p.m. tornado through the south side of Salina.

Subsequent dice rolls decided that the tornado caused 50 injuries during the event, one death, widespread damages and power outages across town.

RPG stands for 'role-playing game,' which is also commonly known as pen-and-paper games where players describe the actions they intend to take. Most games use dice rolls to decide the outcomes of the said actions.

Emergency Management director Michelle Weis said she plays Dungeons and Dragons and thought the dice-rolling aspect of the game would be helpful in a training scenario.

A dice roll at 9 a.m. decided the disaster participants would respond to and each change throughout the day until 3 p.m. when some participants finished training with a media debrief.

Act as you train — realistic scenarios and solutions

Throughout the training exercise, Weis walked along the training room to allow participants to roll and decide the situation's outcome. Each roll decided on various factors throughout the day.

Weis said crisis training before this often focused on worst-case scenarios, with rigidly designed situations that don't allow first responders to think quickly and adapt to shifting environments.

"It can be pretty simple to say, 'I'm just going to show up and I'm going to do my job, and everything's going to be fine,'" Weis said. "In reality, we all know that nothing ever goes how we plan."

An important focus point of the day was quickly finding out the "who does what's" of the 17 various departments at the training event, defining each unit's roles in a crisis scenario.

Salina Regional Health Center infection preventionist and emergency preparedness coordinator Gerilyn Diederich said she was impressed by the communication skills between departments, quickly dividing up tasks and assistance for the community.

SRHC inpatient supervisor Misty Long and Diederich said the training was more realistic, allowing participants to adapt to changing scenarios with each dice roll.

"It makes you think on your toes, and that's exactly what you'll be doing in a disaster," Long said. "A lot of people are counting on us to think on our toes, and you always act as you train, so training with this kind of scenario is really very helpful for us."

Long and Diederich said they intend to present this type of training for SRHC, focusing on training for the various crisis scenarios the center could experience.

Salina Police Department sergeant Mike Miller said the training exercise was helpful for his department and wants to see more people in the room next time.

"I think we need to bring more city departments in, especially if we're going to have an emergency within the city," Miller said.

Most of the 17 departments that participated included county divisions, including some from Lincoln and Dickinson counties.

"They all essentially want to come together and help the community out for the greater good, whether that's in an emergency or whether that's dedicating six hours to sitting through a training," Weis said. "The fact that they put everything aside and dedicated a day to this speaks volumes to their commitment to making sure that the city and county are prepared for whatever incidents may occur here."

Weis said she intends to do the training exercise again with some improvements in the future.

Tabletop RPG methods kept first responders 'on their toes' during crisis training

Local student receieves National Merit Scholarship award

On October 27-29 Central High School Theatre will present the play, The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, newly adapted by Wendy Kesselman.

Ticket prices for the production are $7 for adults, $5 for students with ZERO credit service charges added to this price if using a credit card online to pre-purchase tickets. Running time is approximately 2 hours, which includes one 15-minute intermission between each act.

They are looking at a newspaper that says that the war is almost over and gives them hope that they might be able to be free soon.

The production is directed by Bill Weaver, Central High School Technical Director, who is assisted by Barbara Hilt, Central High School Theatre teacher and program director.

In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl, who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit, and determination. An impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic, The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence—their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief. 

Each day of these two dark years, Anne's voice shines through: "When I write I shake off all my cares. But I want to achieve more than that. I want to be useful and bring enjoyment to all people, even those I've never met. I want to go on living even after my death!"

"The play The Diary of Anne Frank is an important piece of theatre that needs to be done and done again and again. We need to be reminded that the Holocaust should never happen again. These are real people and their stories need to be told, ” Weaver said.&nbsp;

“I want to say how grateful I am for the opportunity to be a part of the telling of Anne’s story. I say story rather than show because that’s what The Diary of Anne Frank is; a story accounting real events that happened in real people’s lives. They aren’t made up characters who live lives on the stage that never actually happened in real life. They’re people who had to go through the horrors of the Holocaust. I believe that this story is vital to be shared beacuse of how it humanizes the victims of the Holocaust. It wasn’t just six million Jewish people that died. It was six million lives, and each life had their own story just like you and I. I hope you will join us as we walk through the stories of eight people whose lives were turned upside down by the Holocaust. While I can’t promise that it’ll be as fun as a comedy…I can promise that it will truly touch your heart.”

Alyssa is a junior and the daughter of Terri and Scott Maas. Alyssa is the Secretary for troupe 639. You may have seen her before in The Children's Hour, Anastasia, A Game, Squad Goals, Death Knocks, The Nerd or the award-winning one act Trifles. She was also the stage manager for Noises Off. She placed 3rd in the English Speaking Union's Shakespeare monologue competition in Kansas City. She hopes that you enjoy the show!

Wyatt is the son of James and Tara Angell and Samantha Angell. His past shows are The Explorers Club, Mamma Mia!, Head Over Heels, and Trifles. He also was the light board operator for The Nerd and Noises Off. Wyatt designed the lights for this production.

Anna Kraft is a sophomore and the daughter of Carmen Lucia San Martin and Robert Kraft. She has served as a crew member for Noises Off, The Explorers Club and The Nerd at Central and A Christmas Story at Theatre Salina. You may have seen her in The Children's Hour at Central last fall, Cinderella or Descendants at Theatre Salina. She is also involved in Central’s Choir!

Carson is a junior and son of Matt &amp; Leslie Ablard. This is Carson's first time taking on a role in a mainstage production. He is excited to be a part of this production. Carson also is a part of the swim team and is a sports writer for The Pylon. He was also part of the running crew for Noises Off.

Madison is a sophomore and the daughter of Pam and Dennis Berndt. She has been involved in shows and classes at Theatre Salina for over ten years. She was a dresser in The Explorers Club and A Christmas Story (Theatre Salina). She has helped with costumes for Cinderella (Theatre Salina) and loves helping the the costume shop.

Ellie is a sophomore and the daughter of Alison and John Riekhof. She has served as crew for Noises Off, The Explorers Club, and The Children's Hour. This is Ellie's first mainstage role at Central High School.

Gabriel is a sophomore and the son of Kristina and Michael Freeland. He has previously run lights for Something Rotten and was in A Christmas Story at Theatre Salina as well as running lights for The Children's Hour and running crew for Noises Off.

Jayda is a junior at Salina Central High School. This is Jayda's second role in a mainstage production. You may have seen Jayda play Mrs. Tilford in The Children's Hour last fall. Jayda has been backstage working crew for Anastasia, the spring one acts, and Peter and the Starcatcher.

Joseph Zepeda is a senior and is the son of Kimberly Trigg and Joe Zepeda. He has been in the musical “Anastasia” his Sophomore year of high school as Drunk #1. He has helped with “The Children’s Hour,” “The Explorers Club” and “The Nerd” during his junior year as tech backstage. He has been in “Mamma Mia!” as ensemble. He was an assistant stage manager for an amazing British comedy named “Noises Off.” “The Diary of Anne Frank” is his first role in a main stage play! He hopes that you enjoy this wonderful show in which all the students put in such hard work!!

Keaton has been crew for five productions. This is Keaton's first role in a mainstage production at Central High School. He is also a member of the marching band. He owns a purple trumpet.

Alyx is a sophomore and the child of Lacey Wendlandt and the grandchild of Patty and Craig Wendlandt. Alyx served on the running crew for The Children's Hour and The Explorers Club.

Zander most recently portrayed the role of Garry in Noises Off at Central High School. He is the son of Chris and Angel Flener. Zander is the Treasurer for troupe 639. Zander is a member of Free Spirit and has been in choir for seven years. This is Zander's second year in theatre at Central High School and you may have seen him in Mamma Mia! (Sky), or The Nerd (Willum).

Benjamin is the son of Robert and Susan Campbell. Ben is the President of troupe 639 and has worked on every show since the Antigone his freshman year. You may have seen him in productions such as Noises Off, The Explorers Club, One Man Two Guvnors, and Mamma Mia! Ben wants you to know that "it has been such a wonderful experience being a part of this show and I want to give a big shout-out to my fellow cast members for their wonderful performances."

Ticket prices for the production are $7 for adults, $5 for students with ZERO credit service charges added to this price if using a credit card online to pre-purchase tickets.  </figure>They are looking at a newspaper that says that the war is almost over and gives them hope that they might be able to be free soon.The production is directed by Bill Weaver, Central High School Technical Director, who is assisted by Barbara Hilt, Central High School Theatre teacher and program director.<h2>The Diary of Anne Frank</h2>In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl, who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit, and determination. You may have seen her before in The Children's Hour, Anastasia, A Game, Squad Goals, Death Knocks, The Nerd or the award-winning one act Trifles. She was also the stage manager for Noises Off. She placed 3rd in the English Speaking Union's Shakespeare monologue competition in Kansas City. She hopes that you enjoy the show!<figure>

He was an assistant stage manager for an amazing British comedy named “Noises Off.” “The Diary of Anne Frank” is his first role in a main stage play!
