On Saturday, Oct. 28, the Salina Police Department responded to a call at 9:51 p.m. for an aggravated robbery at 917 N. 13th Street in the North End Mobile Home Court.

Four victims at the residence reported that four or five men entered the home and attacked the people inside.

"They made entry to the home, struck one of the victims with a hammer in the head," said SPD sergeant Kyle Tonniges. "One person was forced into a bedroom, and one of the suspects held a knife to his neck."

After assaulting the victims inside, Tonniges said the suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the home and left, which the victims called SPD after.

SPD has identified three of the four or five suspects involved in the incident and is still looking for them.

Daniel Velasco picked up the flute by way of the recorder.

A native of Ecuador, Velasco learned to read music as a young student by learning basic notes on the recorder. His music teacher believed he had a natural facility with the instrument and encouraged him to begin learning the flute.

“(The teacher) told me that there is a need for at least three flutes in an orchestra,” Velasco said. “So, I started learning the flute at age nine. It wasn’t something I necessarily chose – I really wanted to be a pianist – but eventually I began taking the flute seriously.”

Velasco made the right choice. He grew up to become an award-winning flutist whose proficiency has taken him to concert halls around the world.

A first prize winner of the National Flute Association’s Young Artists Competition, Velasco has been a soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador and a featured guest performer for the Latin America Orchestra and at the Chautauqua Music Festival. He also has toured in Chile and Central America with the Orchestra of the Americas.

Velasco, who currently serves as the flute professor at the University of Kansas, will be the guest performer at the Salina Symphony’s “Passage” concert, which begins at 4 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.

The theme of the concert focuses on different passages in life, from the physical to the spiritual, said Yaniv Segal, music director and conductor for the Salina Symphony.

“It’s the idea of a journey” he said. “It can mean a lot of different things to different people, depending on your perspective.”

Velasco will be guest soloist for a performance of “Trail of Tears,” a contemporary composition for flute and orchestra by award-winning American composer Michael Daugherty.

The piece focuses on the tragic forced removal of Native Americans from their homeland, where they were forced to make an 800-mile march for relocation in Oklahoma during the bitter cold of winter of 1838.

Suffering from exposure, disease and starvation, nearly 4,000 Cherokee people died during the five-month march that became known as the “Trail of Tears.”

In his program notes for “Trail of Tears,” Daugherty wrote that his flute concerto “is a musical journey into how the human spirit discovers ways to deal with upheaval, adversity and adapting to a new environment.”

Daugherty’s concerto was composed in 2010 and was commissioned by a consortium consisting of the American Composers Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Omaha Symphony and Tupelo Symphony. The world premiere was performed by the Omaha Symphony in 2010 with guest flutist Amy Porter.

“Michael teaches at the University of Michigan, and he wrote it for Amy Porter, the flute professor at the University who was my teacher as well,” Velasco said. “It’s such a well written piece. Michael understands the capabilities of each register of the flute.”

Daugherty also plans to attend the Salina concert, which Velasco said is personally thrilling for him as a musician.

“It means a lot to have the composer there,” he said. “A lot of composers are not normally with us. It makes the event even more meaningful.”

Velasco was invited to be guest soloist for “Trail of Tears” by Segal, who knew Velasco when both men attended the University of Michigan.

“We overlapped two years in Michigan, and I got to see Yaniv conduct,” Velasco said. “When I saw he had started his tenure in Salina, I was very happy for him. I know how competitive a position this was to fill, but I’m not surprised he got it. He contacted me to ask me to do a concerto with him, and we started talking about what we’d like to do.”

Segal said he and Velasco had stayed in contact through the years and was happy to discover that Velasco was teaching at nearby KU.

“He’s an amazing flutist,” Segal said. “Having great soloists and composers is part of my goal to increase the visibility of guest artists in Salina, but it’s also to show them what Salina has to offer, so they can say what a great time they had in Salina, and what a great city it is.”

In addition to “Trail of Tears,” the Salina Symphony will perform Samuel Barber’s emotionally moving masterpiece “Adagio for Strings” and the vividly picturesque “Grand Canyon Suite.”

The mournful tones of the string section in “Adagio for Strings” have been used for emotional effect for many different occasions, including the funerals of President Franklin Roosevelt and scientist Albert Einstein and in classic movies like Oliver Stone’s “Platoon.”

“The music itself is always moving and searching,” Segal said. “I don’t intend to start this concert by invoking a funeral, but rather a journey, a search for something.”

The second half of the concert will feature the “Grand Canyon Suite,” written by Ferde Grofé in 1931. Grofé was a music arranger for the popular Paul Whiteman Band and also did the orchestral arrangements for George Gershwin’s masterpiece “Rhapsody in Blue.”

“This piece conveys another idea of a journey, paying tribute to Grofé’s travels through the Grand Canyon,” Segal said. “The piece is pictographic, with five movements ranging from sunrise to a cloudburst. The third movement (“On the Trail”) is recognizable because it has been used in so many westerns.”

While the orchestra performs “Grand Canyon Suite,” Segal said, there will be awe inspiring projections of the Grand Canyon landscape on a screen above the musicians.

“This ‘Passage’ concert is a journey through our country, from the tragic to the majestic,” he said.

There will be a pre-concert talk with Segal and Daugherty beginning at 3 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Stiefel Theatre’s Watson Room. Those attending are instructed to enter through the theater’s main doors, which open at 2:30 p.m.

Salina Symphony to present 'Passage' concert in Nov.

Halloween is a day where some delight in getting a fright, but don't let the holiday's potential safety hazards sneak up on your pets.Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksvhc.org/">Veterinary Health Center</a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>, has some tips to help keep pets safe.Nelson suggests leaving pets indoors before, during and a few days after the holiday for their safety.

"Cats, especially black ones, are often sought after with cruel intentions during Halloween," Nelson said.

While trick-or-treaters are knocking at the door, Nelson advises keeping pets in a back room with the TV turned on to help block the noise caused by doorbells and children.

"Be conscious of open doors, as some animals might make attempts to go outside," Nelson said. "Make sure pets have some form of identification, such as microchips, collars or tags. Reflective collars will make it safer should the pets get out, as it will make them more visible."

Nelson suggests putting pet costumes on before Halloween to make sure the pet can see, hear, breathe and move."When shopping for pet Halloween costumes, be mindful of costumes that have loose or small parts that could be pulled off and ingested," Nelson said. "If your pet seems distressed or allergic or shows abnormal behavior with a costume, consider having it wear a Halloween-themed bandana instead or nothing at all if even that causes distress."For pets that have a love for candy or decorations, Nelson has some tricks to keep them safe:

• Keep all candy out of reach to avoid accidental ingestion of ingredients that can be toxic to pets or injure/obstruct their GI tracts. Examples of toxins are chocolate, Xylitol — an artificial sweetener — raisins and some types of nuts.

• Consider disconnecting your doorbell or greeting trick-or-treaters at the end of your driveway, weather permitting, if the sound of the bell upsets your pet.

• Be mindful that pets may be frightened by one of their familiar family members when that person is disguised in a costume. Acclimate them to the sight ahead of time.

• Keep your pet away from electrical cords, candles and decorations to avoid accidental ingestion.

• Throw away moldy pumpkins — they can cause illness if ingested.

• Store glow sticks out of reach; they taste bitter and can cause drooling and agitation if ingested.

Veterinarian gives tips to keep your pets safe and less stressed this Halloween

Early this morning at 2:43 a.m., a Salina Police Department officer located a vehicle with no license plate at the 1100 block of North Ninth Street. The car, a blue 2013 Honda Accord, fled as the officer attempted to stop the driver.

From there, the driver, 26-year-old Salinan Skyler McKay, sped north on Ninth Street toward Interstate 70 and turned eastbound until Niles Road, when McKay exited and went south.

At the 1300 block of Niles Road, he drove through a field and returned to the road to go back north to I-70.

McKay fled eastbound on I-70 into Dickinson County, where Dickinson County Sheriff deputies deployed a spike strip, which McKay dodged going into oncoming traffic.

From there, Salina Police Department sergeant Kyle Tonniges said Salina officers ended the pursuit and let the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office take over.

According to Tonniges, Dickinson County eventually arrested McKay and returned him to Salina Police Department custody.

Dickinson County deputies found McKay in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia after they managed to stop him.

The requested charges against McKay include —

● Felony flee and elude ● Felony interference ● Possession of methamphetamine ● Possession of drug paraphernalia ● Reckless driving ● No proof of insurance ● Two counts of failing to yield at a stop sign ● One count of improper signal use

SPD involved in high speed chase early Monday morning

A self-titled show by artist Casilda Sánchez will be the next exhibit at The Gallery in Sams Fine Arts Building on the Kansas Wesleyan campus. The show will open Monday, Nov. 6, and run through Dec. 8.

Sánchez uses video, installation and photography to explore ideas of vision, voyeurism and intimacy.

“The show will contain two single-channel videos,” said Jeroen Nelemans, gallery manager and assistant professor of Graphic Design at KWU. “One will be projected large, and the other will be on a monitor. It is a very minimal show, but visually powerful.”

“Through sustained and detailed close-ups, what would have normally been overlooked becomes visible, unlocking a fleeting moment into a vast space of micronarratives,” Sánchez said.

She received an MFA in Video, Film and New Media from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a PhD in Contemporary Art from Complutense in Madrid.

The show is being curated by Jefferson Godard, a contemporary curator, gallery director, educator and architect. He currently serves as gallery manager and faculty member at Wichita State University. From 2021 to 2022, Godard was the curator at the Salina Art Center.

Admission to The Gallery is always free. The Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends by appointment.&nbsp;

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Cold Weather Rule, designed to help Kansans who are behind on their utility payments avoid disconnection during the winter months, will begin on Wednesday, November 1 and remain in effect through March 31.

While the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, utility companies cannot disconnect a customer's service when the local temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees within the following 48-hour period. The Kansas Corporation Commission, the agency that regulates public utilities in the state, implemented the rule in 1983 to prevent utility companies from disconnecting a customer's natural gas or electric service during periods of extreme cold.

The Cold Weather Rule also requires utility companies to offer a 12-month payment plan to allow consumers to maintain or re-establish service. Any residential customer with a past due balance will qualify for payment arrangements; however, it is the customer's responsibility to contact their gas or electric company to make those arrangements.

Payment plan terms to maintain or restore service require that customers agree to pay 1/12th of the total amount owed, 1/12th of the current bill, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fee, plus any applicable deposit to the utility. The remaining balance must be paid in equal payments over the next 11 months, in addition to the current monthly bill.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Cold Weather Rule, designed to help Kansans who are behind on their utility payments avoid disconnection during the winter months, will begin on Wednesday, November 1 and remain in effect through March 31.While the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, utility companies cannot disconnect a customer's service when the local temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees within the following 48-hour period. The Kansas Corporation Commission, the agency that regulates public utilities in the state, implemented the rule in 1983 to prevent utility companies from disconnecting a customer's natural gas or electric service during periods of extreme cold.The Cold Weather Rule also requires utility companies to offer a 12-month payment plan to allow consumers to maintain or re-establish service. Any residential customer with a past due balance will qualify for payment arrangements; however, it is the customer's responsibility to contact their gas or electric company to make those arrangements.Payment plan terms to maintain or restore service require that customers agree to pay 1/12th of the total amount owed, 1/12th of the current bill, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fee, plus any applicable deposit to the utility. SALINA, KS&nbsp;– Kansas Wesleyan announced Friday the hiring of Levi Thomas as the university’s first Director of Graduate Admissions and Corporate Relations. Thomas will work in tandem with university leadership to lead recruitment for the university’s MBA program. He began his duties in mid-October.&nbsp;

“We are thrilled to have Levi join the KWU team,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “He brings a strong pedigree to this role and will work hard to develop connections that will benefit our MBA program. We look forward to having him work alongside Business and Accounting Department chair Dr. Michelle Case, our marketing team and university leadership to make that program the best it can be.”

Thomas comes to KWU from fellow KICA school Southwestern, where he served as the director of admissions and financial aid. He trained new admissions employees in recruitment strategies, worked with departments across campus to foster communication that positively influenced enrollment, and managed marketing and event planning to maximize recruitment opportunities.&nbsp;

“I am deeply honored to accept this position,” said Thomas. “The sincere passion and pride expressed by students, faculty and staff here at KWU is infectious. I am very excited to make new connections and continue strengthening existing relationships to benefit the growth of our MBA program.”

Thomas also previously served as an admission representative at Central Methodist University. He is a 2015 graduate of Central Methodist, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management and was named the department’s outstanding senior. He earned his MBA from Southwestern this past December.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Coyotes have won the last five games and six of the last seven against the Bluejays. KWU rolled to a 62-0 victory last season at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex. KWU has a 13-9 advantage in the series since the 2001 season.

The Coyotes ran their winning streak to five with a 17-14 victory over Saint Mary last Saturday on Homecoming and Family Weekend at JRI Stadium. They led 17-7 at halftime and hung on thanks to another stellar defensive effort.

Saint Mary had 238 yards total offense that included just seven yards rushing on 25 attempts. KWU also recorded five sacks in the game.&nbsp;Julian Urioste&nbsp;and&nbsp;Shaylan Lewis&nbsp;had seven tackles apiece – Lewis also notching two sacks.&nbsp;Ricco Moore&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ricardo Garcia&nbsp;had six tackles each.

 The Coyotes finished with 423 total yards – 292 passing and 131 rushing. Freshman quarterback&nbsp;Byron McNair&nbsp;was sacked once.

McNair, making his second start of the season, was 14 of 22 passing for 292 yards, one touchdown and three first half interceptions. The touchdown was a 67-yard catch and run by&nbsp;Jacquante Pitts&nbsp;with 1:38 left in the first half.&nbsp;Nick Allsman&nbsp;scored KWU's first touchdown on a six-yard run early in the first quarter.&nbsp;Talon Cope&nbsp;had a 33-yard field early in the second quarter. Pitts finished with four receptions for 133 yards and fullback&nbsp;Artaveon Shavers&nbsp;five catches for 88 yards. Allsman had a team-best 47 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Junior running back James Bolden is the primary offensive weapon with 641 yards rushing – 80.1 per game – and 13 receptions for 159 yards. He has scored three touchdowns, two receiving. Devin Jones in the leading receiver with 24 catches for 176 yards and four touchdowns

Senior linebacker Brooks Gardner, son of head coach Mike Gardner, has a team-best 75 tackles.

"We're not walking into this game thinking it's won. Coach Gardner does a great job over there and I know they'll be ready to go and ready to give us a test. We're going to have to come out hot and stay hot. Coach Gardner's offenses always do a good job running the ball. As long as we keep everything in front of us in the pass game, we'll be alright. And coach Gardner always has a couple of trick plays up his sleeve, when you play them you've got to be ready for anything. (Defensively) they use multiple fronts and move guys around. That will be a challenge for us this week."

The Coyotes travel to Ottawa for a 1 p.m. game Saturday against the Braves at Advent Health Field. It will be KWU's final road game of the regular season.

KWU Football heads to Hillsboro to take on Tabor

What is your profession? Sales associate, Farm Bureau Financial Services

Give a brief bio on yourself in 100 words or less.

My name is J.D. Garber and I am a Sales Associate at Farm Bureau Financial Services. I am a people person and enjoy working with our clients. I graduated from Kansas State University in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education. While teaching and coaching in USD 305 I earned my master's degree from Emporia State in education administration in 2012. I taught English and Journalism for 15 years at Salina Central. My wife Lindsay and I have three children; Marcella, Gabby, and Jett.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize or improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of students in our community? &nbsp;As a school board member, I believe we have a unique opportunity in USD 307. I’m from a small town rural high school and loved the education I received there. I would prioritize teacher and support staff recruitment as well as facility improvement. Building on the excellent staff and history in Brookville is key to developing an outstanding learning environment.

In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue?

I believe there are bigger issues for us to focus on in education and in our student's lives. I love reading and appreciate the dialogue we can have as teachers, parents, and students when we find content that exposes the reality of the world we live in.

Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents and educators?

&nbsp;I completely agree and believe parental engagement and community involvement are very important. I also feel that in today’s educational system communication must be clear, easily accessible, and from multiple sources. USD 307 administration is already communicating in multiple ways and we will continue to look at improving this. Families in 307 need to be in our school. I would hope to improve parent/teacher conferences as well as encourage our leaders to create ways for parents to participate in their student's education.

Please explain why you are running for city commission.

 I am running for school board because I believe I can help improve the educational experience in USD307. I also have two students attending school in our district. I’m excited for the opportunity to find ways to rethink rural education. As a longtime Salina based educator I’m looking forward to being back in the school system.

Salina Downtown Lion's Club will host a barbecue on Saturday, Oct. 28 to fundraise for the Central Kansas District 4-H Club's activities and other youth programs in the Salina area.

The club will host its&nbsp;65th Annual Public Barbecue from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Salina 4-H building at 900 E. Kenwood Drive, Salina, KS. Tickets cost $10 in advance or $12 at the door, and carry-out will be available alongside regular dine-in.

Participants can purchase advance tickets from any 4-H member, Downtown Salina Lion's Club member or by calling 785-825-1807 to arrange a pickup time.

The Salina Downtown Lions Club has donated $14,212 to youth programs in Salina and surrounding regions in the last two years and $347,899 in the past 24 years.
