Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene wore blue jeans at work for another “Jeans Day” fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of October. Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work.

 A total donation of $1,075 was presented to the Abilene Area Toys 4 Tots organization. The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.&nbsp;

Memorial Hospital is also an Abilene Area Toys 4 Tots drop-off location for new toys, games, books, and monetary donations through December 11th.

Submitted Eagle Communications radio station 94.5 Prime-FM has officially welcomed the Christmas season to central Kansas. There may not be snow on the ground, but the nip in the air is a timely reminder that Santa Claus’ visit isn’t too far away.

94.5 FM transitioned from the classic-hits format to all-Christmas at 12:01am Tuesday morning. While many families may be trick or treating for candy, one station official says some children who are using the station for their seasonal soundtrack, could also go caroling on Halloween night.

“We felt as if we were a little late to deck the halls this year,’ said Shane McClintock, Prime-FM’s operations manager. ‘After all, retail stores have had Christmas trees and décor on display since August!’

McClintock believes 94.5 FM will be the perfect station for businesses to have on in stores while shoppers make holiday purchases. In recent years, Prime-FM has been heard in the background at holiday parades and regional parades.

The all-Christmas format can be heard several ways; at 94.5FM in Salina, regionally at 99.9 FM on HD-2 radios and by listening online at SalinaPost.com.

K-State ag economist profitability varies depending on location in the state

A regional analysis of farm income that includes a look at how Kansas farmers are doing indicates that livestock receipts are up and crop receipts are down.

And, said Kansas State University agricultural economist Jenny Ifft, “where you are in the state matters.”

“We're expecting $4 billion of income across the entire state,” said Ifft, who is the Flinchbaugh Agriculture Policy chair at K-State. “That's almost the same as the previous year but within sectors there's a lot of variability.”

Ifft and Joe Parcell, director of K-State’s Center for Risk Management Education and Research, have taken a look at a recent analysis from the Rural and Farm Financial Policy Analysis Center, located at the University of Missouri. According to Parcell, the center – known as RaFF – was formed to fill a gap between the national farm income outlook and the Kansas farm income analysis from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“These forecasts cover agriculture in the entire state of Kansas,” Ifft said.

Ifft said the USDA expects corn production at the national level to rebound and soybean production to decline slightly.

“Prices are softening up on the crop side across the board. Expenses have gone down as well,” she said. “On the cattle side, drought has reduced cattle numbers and that's really pushing up prices for both feeder cattle and fed cattle.”

Ifft added that there is increased use of vegetable oil for biofuel, providing extra support for soybean prices. Hay prices are still strong this year with the average last year being $172 per ton.

“This year, it's estimated at $186 per ton,” Ifft said. “This is an average, so it can vary wildly depending where you are on the quality of the hay, but hay prices are still strong.”

Another factor influencing hay prices are parts of the state remain in a continued drought.

“Parts of the state have recovered, but their inventories have been depleted,” said Ifft, adding that if conditions continue and yields get back to normal, she expects prices to go down over the next couple of years.

“On the corn side of things, the variability is still there across Kansas, especially with the late season drought,” Parcell said. “We were dealing with lower prices this year than we had last year, and so that's going to help drive down some of that income from corn.”

Ifft said soybean acres are down and are projecting below average production yield and lower prices. Wheat and sorghum had quite a bit of variability across Kansas.

“Kansas cattle numbers are following the national trend. With the drought and higher grain prices, we're seeing less cattle out there,” Parcell said. “Feedyards are paying higher value for calves and hoping to send high value fed cattle to market, which is helping drive the income, but it's costing a lot to get those cattle through the feedyard.”

Parcell said hogs are the outliers. Producers are still dealing with high grain prices and feed costs, but haven’t seen the high pork prices yet to see a rebound in their income outlook.

Ifft said the Kansas dairy sector is growing, and the RAFF outlook continues to follow that trend.

Because of variability between sectors, Parcell said risk mitigation is important.

“It's outside of the individual producers' control what these markets are going to do, so you're always going to look to the futures market or contracts there, more and more,” Parcell said, who recommends producers consider purchasing crop or livestock insurance. “We can look at the past a little bit to tell us about the future, and we know we're down from 2022.”

Saline County Jail Activity, Nov. 2

On Nov. 2, 1976, former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter became the first candidate from the Deep South since the Civil War to be elected president as he defeated incumbent Gerald R. Ford.

In 1783, General George Washington issued his Farewell Address to the Army near Princeton, New Jersey.

In 1861, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln relieved Maj. Gen. John C. Fremont of his command of the Army’s Department of the West based in St. Louis, following Fremont’s unauthorized efforts to emancipate slaves in Missouri.

In 1917, British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour issued a declaration expressing support for a “national home” for the Jews in Palestine.

In 1920, white mobs rampaged through the Florida citrus town of Ocoee, setting fire to Black-owned homes and businesses, after a Black man, Mose Norman, showed up at the polls to vote on Election Day; some historians estimate as many as 60 people were killed.

In 1950, playwright George Bernard Shaw died in Ayot St. Lawrence, Hertfordshire, England at age 94.

In 1994, a jury in Pensacola, Florida, convicted Paul Hill of murder for the shotgun slayings of an abortion provider and his escort; Hill was executed in September 2003.

In 2000, American astronaut Bill Shepherd and two Russian cosmonauts, Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev, became the first residents of the international space station.

In 2003, in Iraq, insurgents shot down a Chinook helicopter carrying dozens of U.S. soldiers, killing 16.

According to the Salina Police Department, Barry Little was the victim in the golf cart incident on Saturday&nbsp;

Sergeant Kyle Tonniges confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Little was the victim in Saturday's incident.

Little owned a local electrical company,&nbsp;<a href="https://lselectricllc.com/">L&amp;S Electric</a>, and worked for other local businesses before starting his own.&nbsp;

SPD did not make this information available to Salina Post until today since staff were still completing the accident report and notifying next of kin.

Early Sunday morning, the Salina Police Department, alongside Salina Fire Department EMS, responded to a call reporting the death of a 56-year-old man found at Great Life Golf and Fitness.

An employee of Great Life Golf at 1800 S. Marymount Road found the victim underneath a golf cart unresponsive.&nbsp;

Once EMS arrived, they confirmed his death at the scene.

According to SPD sergeant Kyle Tonniges, the department learned that overnight, the victim was driving the golf cart, veered off the cart patch and struck a tree, causing the golf cart to land on top of him.

A subject walking the course the following day discovered the victim and reported the incident.

The SPD traffic unit is investigating the incident as a vehicle crash.

Salina Post will update the story as more information becomes available.

On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, Morgan Brothers Construction of La Cross, Kansas began repairing the intersection of Claflin and Osborne.

Portions of the pavement will be completely replaced. Claflin will continue to be open to two-way traffic while the work is being completed; Osborne will be closed to traffic until the work is completed in three weeks, weather permitting.

City of Salina announces Claflin Avenue and Osborne Street repairs

<a>In a few days, voters across Kansas will choose members of their city’s governing councils. In some cases they’ll also be voting for mayors; when they aren’t, it’s because their city elected a mayor during the previous odd-year cycle, or because the mayor is chosen from among those elected to the city council by an internal vote.</a>

But whether the mayor is separately elected or not, there are two things nearly all of these elections have in common. First, not very many voters will participate in them. Second, those who do participate aren’t really voting for who will be in charge of where they live.

That’s a broad claim, and not an entirely fair one. Those elected to municipal positions truly do have the responsibility to make decisions about taxes, spending, investment, infrastructure, public safety, and more. Since those decisions profoundly affect Kansas towns and cities, doesn’t that mean they deserve to be called “in charge” of those localities?

Well, yes. But still: who drafted the budgets which framed the available options for possible taxes and spending? Who studied the proposals and made investment recommendations? Who worked out plans and priorities for infrastructure maintenance? While those elected to city governments can, through their decisions, enable cities to pursue various agendas, in the end they are mostly not deciding what goes onto those agendas in the first place.

Who does? City managers and their staff, that’s who.

A hundred years ago, broad disgust with corruption in municipal governments, along with the great faith many felt in the power of specialization and expertise, led to a wave of reforms across the United States. Specific executive power was often taken away from municipal officials and given to professionals who were hired to take care of the fine details of taxation, development, and more. Many would argue that this led to great practical improvements in how cities and towns are administered, and there is some evidence in support of that claim. But it also led to an abiding democratic deficit: so much of the day-to-day decisions in cities across America are made, or at least defined, by unelected professionals, not those who seek the people’s votes.

Kansas municipalities overwhelmingly maintain these kind of council-manager governments, where the mayor is equal to all other members of city council, discussing and voting up or down on what the city manager and their permanent city staff put before them. The contrary governing system—a “strong mayor” system, such as was preserved in cities like Tulsa, Omaha, and elsewhere—is one where the mayor is the true chief executive of the city, who appoints a staff and negotiates with the city council, which in turn serves as genuine legislative body, advancing the specific (admittedly, often partisan) interests of those who elected them in their districts.

Many defenders of Kansas’s dominant council-manager approach insist that it is appropriate for sewers, roads, parks, and more to be overseen by professionals; they assume that returning detailed executive responsibility to elected politicians would only polarize city governments the way America’s state and national governments are polarized. That’s a fair point.

But it is also fair to point out that one possible reason that participation in local elections is often so often low is because many voters may realize that those they are electing are sometimes almost more an oversight body to the professionals who actually run their city, rather than the other way around. If we want local turnout to change, perhaps government structures need to change too.

On Monday afternoon at approximately 12:48 p.m. the Salina Fire Department responded to a house fire in the the 600 Block of S. Ninth Street in Salina.&nbsp;

Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire on the first floor and extending to the second floor. Fire crews began a fire attack and searched the structure.

According to a post made on Facebook by Salina Fire, all of the occupants in the home were out of the house and accounted for when Salina Fire arrived.

The occupant's home was deemed a total loss according to Salina Fire.&nbsp;

"On October 30th, 2023, my son David and his family lost their home to a devastating fire," reads the GoFundMe Post created by Allan Baker. "It is a total loss and they did not have any insurance so they are starting over. They got out with the clothes on their backs. They need help starting over from the ground up. From finding a place to live and to clothes for the children and themselves."

Salina Fire Marshall Joe Kvacik told Salina Post on Thursday that the investigation to discover what caused the fire was inconclusive. Kvacik said there were too many different environmental factors present to determine one singular cause for the fire.&nbsp;

Poinsettia sale fundraiser for the friends of the Smoky Hill Museum

Salina Family Healthcare Center (SFHC) is excited to celebrate 10 years of their on-site pharmacy, Salina Family Healthcare Pharmacy (SFHP), on November 6!

SFHC decided to open its own pharmacy after Jim’s Pharmacy was closed in 2012. Before closing, Jim’s Pharmacy had a limited formulary of medications that were discounted for qualified uninsured patients of SFHC. Recognizing this would create a gap in the care of SFHC’s patients, the SFHC Board of Directors decided to invest in an on-site pharmacy that could continue to offer prescription medications at significantly reduced costs to health center patients. 

The vision for the pharmacy was initially limited to filling this void, but after opening the pharmacy on November 5, 2013, SFHC quickly realized that having an on-site pharmacy created many new opportunities to better serve its patients in addition to access to affordable medications.

“Limited access to medications is a major barrier to a healthy patient and community. We are so lucky at SFHC to have a very special pharmacy that can begin to break down that barrier for our patients,” said CEO Dr. Robert Kraft.

“SFHP helps break down barriers to medication access and supports so much of the vital work we do that is not paid for through insurance. Linking patients to community resources, pharmacist support of physicians through clinical pharmacy services, and so much more would not be possible without SFHP. Thank you to all of the pharmacists, staff, and patients of SFHP for a great decade! It will be exciting to see where the next decade takes us!”

- Renovated its pharmacy in 2019 to expand its size and add important technology advancements

- Expanded to offer free medication delivery within Salina and free prescription bubblepacking

- Added a free medication collection unit in SFHC’s lobby that has sent hundreds of pounds of unused medication (including dangerous opioids) to be safely destroyed and out of circulation in our community

- Advocated for state and federal programs and legislation such as the 340B Drug Pricing Program that helps to make medication more accessible and affordable for patients

“I was hired in April 2014, about five months after SFHP opened. We were thrilled if we filled anywhere close to 100 prescriptions in a day back then. Our daily prescription volume has more than doubled with many more services and staff members to help our patients,” said Derek Pihl, Chief Pharmacy Officer.

Derek continued, “Rod Smith owned Jim’s Pharmacy in town for several years and was instrumental in getting SFHP opened for SFHC. I am forever grateful for what he and the original staff did to set our foundation and leave a legacy that is doing so much good for our patients and community.  </figure>SubmittedSalina Family Healthcare Center (SFHC) is excited to celebrate 10 years of their on-site pharmacy, Salina Family Healthcare Pharmacy (SFHP), on November 6!SFHC decided to open its own pharmacy after Jim’s Pharmacy was closed in 2012. Before closing, Jim’s Pharmacy had a limited formulary of medications that were discounted for qualified uninsured patients of SFHC. Recognizing this would create a gap in the care of SFHC’s patients, the SFHC Board of Directors decided to invest in an on-site pharmacy that could continue to offer prescription medications at significantly reduced costs to health center patients. The vision for the pharmacy was initially limited to filling this void, but after opening the pharmacy on November 5, 2013, SFHC quickly realized that having an on-site pharmacy created many new opportunities to better serve its patients in addition to access to affordable medications.“Limited access to medications is a major barrier to a healthy patient and community. We are so lucky at SFHC to have a very special pharmacy that can begin to break down that barrier for our patients,” said CEO Dr. Robert Kraft.“SFHP helps break down barriers to medication access and supports so much of the vital work we do that is not paid for through insurance. Linking patients to community resources, pharmacist support of physicians through clinical pharmacy services, and so much more would not be possible without SFHP. Thank you to all of the pharmacists, staff, and patients of SFHP for a great decade! It will be exciting to see where the next decade takes us!”<h2>Since first opening, SFHP has:</h2>- Grown from three staff members to 16- Renovated its pharmacy in 2019 to expand its size and add important technology advancements- Expanded to offer free medication delivery within Salina and free prescription bubblepacking- Added a free medication collection unit in SFHC’s lobby that has sent hundreds of pounds of unused medication (including dangerous opioids) to be safely destroyed and out of circulation in our community- Managed SFHC’s Manufacturer Assistance Program (MAP) that helps eligible patients get medication directly from pharmaceutical companies at no cost- Added robust clinic pharmacy services such as chronic condition management, including an emphasis on diabetes education and management- Saved eligible patients an estimated $2.6 million annually on the cost of their prescriptions compared to the cash price based on numbers from fiscal year 2022- Started a Pharmacy Residency Program in 2023- Advocated for state and federal programs and legislation such as the 340B Drug Pricing Program that helps to make medication more accessible and affordable for patients“I was hired in April 2014, about five months after SFHP opened. We were thrilled if we filled anywhere close to 100 prescriptions in a day back then. Our daily prescription volume has more than doubled with many more services and staff members to help our patients,” said Derek Pihl, Chief Pharmacy Officer.Derek continued, “Rod Smith owned Jim’s Pharmacy in town for several years and was instrumental in getting SFHP opened for SFHC. Salina Family Healthcare Center celebrates 10 years of their on-site pharmacy

It's hard to believe it, but the holiday season is upon us. Salina Dowtown Inc. invites the community to spend the afternoon in downtown Salina visiting their favorite stores to see what new is in store for the holidays.

Stores downtown will be open from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. and you will be able to get a head start on your holiday shopping, or better yet, find something special for yourself.

 “According to the Huffington Post, spending $100 at a local business nets $68 in economic activity, compared to spending $100 at a big box retailer, which nets only $48 in local economic activity," Bishop said.&nbsp;

Bishop said, that for small businesses, the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas brings in more sales than any other time of the year.

“Our downtown businesses appreciate the support our community gives them, and we look forward to seeing everyone in downtown Salina on Sunday, Nov 5 and throughout the holiday season," Bishop said.&nbsp;

Salina Downtown Inc. to host Holiday Open House Nov. 5

The 8th annual Fe for a Cure 5K Run/Walk held September 16 achieved record fundraising to support patients undergoing treatment at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center. 

The event raised a record $26,260 through registrations, donations and ribbon sign sales. An anonymous donor also has stepped forward and pledged an additional $30,000 toward the effort – bringing the total raised to $56,260.

The race had 791 registered participants including runners, walkers and Couch Potatoes. The USA Track &amp; Field Certified event had 228 participants from outside Salina, including 22 participants from out-of-state.

“We’re incredibly thankful for the community’s support for Fe for a Cure,” said Marla McElderry, executive director of the Salina Regional Health Foundation. “We believe this event is positioned to grow even more in the future.”

Many local businesses participated in the Corporate Challenge portion of the event, which recognizes small, mid-sized and large businesses with the most registered participants.

Jim’s Formal Wear, Blue Beacon, and Great Plains Manufacturing were this year’s Corporate Challenge Winners.

Thanks to support from the event’s sponsors, 100 percent of entry fees are designated to directly support patients at the Cancer Center.

The event is presented annually by the Salina Regional Health Foundation, Meridian Media and North Salina Community Development.

Fe for a Cure 5K achieves record support for patients

Yesterday, at 10:39 p.m., the Salina Police Department responded to a vehicle crash at 1727 W. Crawford St. Amy Morgan-Brooks, 50, of Salina, made a U-turn going east on Cypress Street and subsequently crashed into an AT&amp;T utility box.

She drove her gold 2005 Chevy Trailblazer to the Kwick Shop at 1727 W. Crawford St. when her husband called SPD to report the incident.

"Our officers made contact with her and thought she was under the influence," said SPD sergeant Kyle Tonniges. "Officers arrested her, and then a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in her vehicle."

SPD arrested Morgan-Brooks and requested charges for a DUI, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Donmyer Road between Country Club Road and Poheta Road is scheduled to be closed from Nov. 1 to Dec. 22 for a bridge replacement project just north of the Donmyer Road and Country Club Road intersection.

Country Club Road will remain open to traffic.

Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations.&nbsp;

Local&nbsp;and emergency traffic will be provided&nbsp;access to private property within the sections of the&nbsp;closed&nbsp;road&nbsp;at&nbsp;all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Driving around road closure barricades is not just unlawful but extremely unsafe. For your safety and the safety of the construction workers, please obey all traffic signs.

The play is written by Rick Jacobs, a playwright with a wild imagination -- perhaps too wild! As he attempts to overcome a massive case of writer's block, the audience sees four figments of his imagination play out in the opening scene of his next murder mystery.&nbsp;

He -- and they -- are interrupted by the arrival of his neighbor, Loni, with whom Rick is secretly, and helplessly, in love. The source of Rick's trouble with women, his domineering mother, arrives on the scene (along with her imagined double) carrying a burial urn with Mr. Jacobs' ashes inside.&nbsp;

As Rick's thoughts bounce between his frustrating love life and his play, the real people and the figments of Rick's imagination clash riotously with the fictional characters in his play. They enact their scenes tipsy when Rick has one too many, hung over like Rick the morning after, and even act out the scene as Mama would write it. If you've ever wondered what goes through a playwright's mind, this farcical comedy reveals all -- hilariously.&nbsp;

"Since this is my first year here at South, I wanted to pick something I knew students would buy into and find funny," said Shilind Wheaton, Theatre teacher at Salina South High School. "I think it's hysterical and I hope we have a great turnout for the show."
