K-State cattle experts offer management advice when feed supplies run low

When consumers are trying to extend their buying dollar at the grocery store, meal planning and shopping the sale items are two ways that they can manage their spending to get the most for their money.

In a similar way, some cattle producers are already looking at ways to extend their feed resources because of the lack of moisture that may have cut those supplies short, said the experts at Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/10/27/beef-dairy-cross-genetics-managing-hay-shortages-have-weaning-weights-improved/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster recommends turning out the cattle on crop residues as a way to extend the time before they need to feed them hay.

“Grazing corn or sorghum stalks are a good feed resource for cows in mid-gestation that have their calves weaned off already,” Lancaster said.

Another option he mentioned was the fall planting of cool-season annuals.

“Those cool season annuals should provide some early grazing options in the spring assuming we get enough moisture for them to grow,” Lancaster said.

If those strategies are not options, K-State veterinarian Bob Larson suggests producers limit the number of hours in the day that the cows are given access to hay. Larson said that cows given free choice access to the hay tend to eat the most appealing part of the hay and don’t as readily consume the less digestible parts.

“To waste less hay, make the cows eat all of one bale before they get the next one,” Larson said. “Another tip is to limit the cows’ access to the hay to 6-12 hours per day.”

In a situation where feed resources are even more limited, K-State Research and Extension beef cattle geneticist Bob Weaber said it may mean some voluntary culling to reduce the herd size.

“Anytime there is a short supply, changing the demand is an effective strategy, and that can be done through the early weaning of the calves as well culling some of the cows,” Weaber said.

He added: “If you are going into a feeding period where hay is elevated in price, you can decrease the demand for the hay by reducing the herd size down to the essential group of cows you want to preserve.”

He suggested producers look at the current market prices as a factor when deciding which cows to sell.

“If the choice is between selling a mature bred cow and a bred replacement heifer, think about which one will generate more value next spring when she calves,” Weaber said. “On average, the mature cow will raise a heavier calf than the bred heifer.”

The experts agreed that if feed resources are challenged and with the current favorable market prices, it may be better to sell now rather than feeding cattle through the winter and selling them in January.

“Most importantly, producers need to have a plan now for what happens when feed runs short,” Weaber said.

It may not be a presidential election year but plenty of local municipal general races in Saline County will be decided in the Nov. 7 General Election. Saline County Clerk Jamie Doss talks to Nate King about upcoming deadlines and things to know for the 2023 Election.&nbsp;

"In a November of an even year election, we're at about 62 to 65% for voter turnout," Doss said. "In this city school election, we run somewhere between 18 and 22% for voter turnout. Local elections are hugely important, all elections are important, but this one hits you at a local level in your daily life."

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Advanced voting begins in Kansas on Wednesday, Oct. 18 during regular courthouse business hours.

The deadline to register to vote is Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. You can check your voter registration via the Kansas Secretary of State <a href="https://myvoteinfo.voteks.org/voterview/">MyVoterView website here.</a>

2023 Election Podcast: Saline County Clerk, Jamie Doss 

Salina Area Technical College has been recognized as one of the top 150 two-year colleges in the United States by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, and is now eligible to compete for the $1 million 2025 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

The colleges selected for this recognition stand out among more than 1,000 two-year colleges nationwide for having high and improving levels of student success, as well as successful outcomes for Black and Hispanic students and those from lower-income backgrounds.

This is the eighth consecutive time Salina Tech has made the Aspen Institute’s list. Salina Tech President Greg Nichols said he is pleased at the recognition, and noted that six other Kansas two-year colleges made the list as well.

“By many measures, two-year colleges in Kansas out-perform similar institutions across the country, and Salina Tech routinely leads Kansas in metrics such as graduation rates, job placement and overall student success,” said Salina Tech President Greg Nichols. “This recognition is the result of years of work by our faculty and staff, continuously looking at how we can improve what we do.”

Among the metrics the Aspen Institute examined were the overall three-year graduation rate, the threeyear graduation rate among students of color, and the three-year graduation rate among low-income students.

The Aspen Prize spotlights exemplary community colleges to elevate the sector, drive attention to colleges doing the best work, and discover and share highly effective student success and equity strategies.

Catalyzing future aviation growth in Salina and throughout Kansas, the Aviation Innovation and Maintenance (AIM) Center of Excellence has taken the first step to address the shortage of skilled workers hindering the growth and competitiveness of the aviation maintenance industry in Kansas.

The&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;Center of Excellence apprenticeship training program will increase training and development opportunities for Kansas and is being launched with funds for equipment, management, youth training services, course development, marketing, and construction on an established hangar (H626) on the Salina Regional Airport (SLN).

“The significance of this program is to provide both existing aviation industries and other related companies with a skilled workforce before they enter the company’s doors,” said Mitch Robinson, Executive Director for the Salina Community Economic Development Organization. “This advantage is a huge plus for the community and for those companies who take part in the program.” 

By providing real-world hands-on training using aircraft from 1 Vision Aviation, this program will provide the student with a skill set that will provide them with a ready to start package of knowledge.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mandy Merritt, Director of Quality Assurance for 1 Vision Aviation said the shortage of aircraft maintenance personnel is being felt all over the country. 

“With the goals that the&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;program has set in providing a crucial first step in exposing people to the industry, we will add high-paying jobs in Salina and potentially, throughout the state. Every apprentice that the&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;Center places in the aircraft maintenance industry has the opportunity to take their career in countless directions,"Merritt said. “This is a very exciting initiative that has the potential to alleviate a deficit in the aviation workforce, improve the community, and showcase the Salina Airport Authority the entity working to advance all of the aviation companies operating in Salina.”

Along with 1 Vision Aviation, other&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;partners include the Salina Airport Authority, Dreiling Aviation Services, Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, Salina Tech, General Atomics – ASI, Salina EDO, Midwest ATC Services, Kansas Workforce, KS Governor's Military Council, USD 305, and K-State Salina.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kirsten Zoller, Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives for K-State Salina said the industry needs innovative solutions to solving the aviation workforce crisis. 

“The ability to upskill individuals in a condensed, hands-on approach is impactful.” The&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;program exposes learners to a variety of aviation maintenance skills and career opportunities. Learners are equipped to start work right away or further their education. “This will help our regional and national industry partners to have a skilled workforce ready to take on the challenges of the aerospace industry,” Zoller said.

The Salina Airport Authority’s hope is that the&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;Center will enhance the reputation and recognition of the airport as a hub for aviation innovation and excellence, as well as foster collaboration and networking among industry partners. The Airport Authority’s involvement in the&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;Center will support the development and growth of the Salina Regional Airport and its tenants, as well as create new jobs and opportunities for local residents and businesses.

The objectives of&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;are to address the shortage of skilled aviation maintenance workers, including airframe and powerplant mechanic, sheet metal specialist, electronics and avionics technician, composites, and aircraft paint; to attract a diversify workforce, with 75 professionals trained each year and offer microcredentials for credit &amp; certification. Microcredentials are condensed units of learning that assess skills and competencies.

As a collaborating partner with&nbsp;AIM, Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus (K-State Salina) is providing curriculum development and course instruction, and is partnering with&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;to help deliver practical, hands-on education – “something our campus has done for decades in the aerospace and technology fields,” said Zoller. Learners completing the program will additionally receive a K-State microcredential.

 “Learners will be able to share this K-State microcredential with potential future employers and education institutions," Zoller said. 

K-State Salina will also provide&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;learners with information about the educational opportunities that they can receive from K-State Salina, including associates, bachelor’s and graduate degrees.

With new demands and skills needed with the introduction of Advanced Air Mobility and electric aircraft,&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;will specially train mechanics for new use cases using advanced technology. Students in this program have an accelerated path to becoming an FAA certified mechanic and will be uniquely prepared with the skills needed to maintain new generations of aircraft, both crewed and uncrewed.

The Airport Authority believes that in the long term the&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;Center will increase the availability and accessibility of skilled training and education for current and future aviation professionals, as well as promote diversity and inclusion in the workforce.&nbsp;It will contribute to the economic development and growth of aviation in the state, region, and the nation, as well as support the national security and defense interests.&nbsp;By participating in the&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;Center initiative, the Salina Airport Authority and its partners will be able to leverage their strengths and resources to address some of the challenges and opportunities facing the aviation industry in the 21st century.

“AIM&nbsp;is yet another example of what makes Salina and the State of Kansas an exciting place to live, learn, and work,” said Curtis L. Stevens, Ed.D., Director of Secondary Programs for USD 305, Salina Public Schools. “This program will help train a workforce that is needed to fill existing positions in the aviation maintenance field.&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;will also help support efforts to attract other employment opportunities for the people of Salina and Kansas.”

The&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;Center of Excellence will provide an additional 150 skilled aviation technicians through the life of the grant, to meet the growth demand of 1 Vision Aviation, as well as other aviation businesses located on the Salina airport and the State of Kansas. This program seeks a diverse student population with outreach and pathways for high school students, college students, transitioning workers, and military veterans. 

Through partnership with Kansas State University’s outreach to 105 Kansas counties and Salina Chamber’s relationships with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina and St. Francis Ministries, this program will have active outreach to minority and disadvantaged students for exploring potential aviation career paths. Additionally, outreach efforts will build on the relationships K-State Salina and the Salina Chamber have established by actively connecting with Fort Riley through the Transition Assistance Program (TAP).

Tucky Allen, Business Services Director/Rapid Response Coordinator, Kansas Workforce One, said their role is to bring workforce to the table and to market accordingly in their workforce centers.&nbsp; “We will work with employers to set up Registered Apprenticeships that are in-line with&nbsp;AIM.” Once RAs are established, they will work with their Workforce Centers and other partners to attract jobseekers to the RAs. They will also promote in the High Schools via their Work-Based Learning Program. 

“AIM&nbsp;will add another pathway to excellent, in-demand careers for Adults and Youth in the Region,” said Allen. “This is huge for Salina and Kansas for economic development and workforce development and increased activity in Aerospace and Aviation training.”

From what Robinson and the Salina Community Economic Development Organization has determined this is a one-of-a-kind program in the U.S. that is providing early training and education to those interested in working in the aviation field. 

“By having this school in our community, state and in the industry, it will have a unique ability to help provide basic training in the identified four areas of interest along with general overviews of the aviation industry,” said Robinson. “This course will help our existing MRO 1 Vision Aviation and other companies in our area who are seeking employees who have graduated with this certification. This six-week program will give the graduate a leg up on others who are seeking employment within the aviation industry. By having this unique program, it allows Salina to have an advantage over other Kansas communities as well as other U.S. cities.”

“Plus,&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;exposes learners to aviation maintenance in an accessible and fun way,” added Zoller. “Learners will have the opportunity to learn more about K-State Salina and we hope they will consider enrolling with us in other training programs or a K-State Salina degree. Ultimately,&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;helps us meet our mission statement of developing global leaders and fostering innovation and talent development in aerospace, technology, and specific needs of the region.”

“Any advantage that we can use in this competitive environment will be a big plus for our community as we compete against other communities here in Kansas or in the Midwest or other parts of the United States,” noted Robinson. “The aviation industry has spread out across the United States and the world with companies expanding to new regions and states as companies seek access to new markets for labor force and access to new customer bases. The impact will help make Salina a much more competitive location.”

Ultimately,&nbsp;AIM&nbsp;hopes to break new barriers and reach new heights by elevating student dreams and unlocking their future. “I believe that the Salina Region will see significant interest from Aerospace and Aviation sector employers looking to expand or relocate to Kansas,” said Allen. “I believe that the training center will give jobseekers the opportunity to Apprentice in a skilled-trade area with high wages and job security. The days of Hawker-Beechcraft could soon be returning to Salina and the Region.”

“I do think that this initiative will make Kansas - and particularly Salina, KS - the gold standard in recruitment and training for the aviation maintenance industry,” said Renee Duxler, President &amp; CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

Aviation Innovation and Maintenance Center of Excellence reaches new heights in Salina

In its inaugural year, the Crossroads Marathon had less than 1,000 entries, but this year, the event grew to become the largest marathon event in Kansas.

The marathon had a little more than 800 runners last year, and within just one year, it has more than tripled to 3,370 entries for 2023. Co-race director Daniel Craig said this year's race has runners from all 50 states and some from Botswana, Colombia, Canada and Mexico.

The marathon also acts as a Boston Marathon Qualifier, but Craig said there would also be a half marathon, marathon and half marathon relays, a 5K walk, a 5K run and a half-mile fun run for children.

Not only do runners in the marathon benefit from access to a Boston Marathon Qualifier, but Crossroads also gives back to the community with each entry.

"Both last year and this year, we're able to give 100% of the race entry fees to four of our local youth sports organizations," Craig said. "(We donate to) the Salina Family YMCA, Kansas Youth Sports, Salina Area Youth Sportsmanship initiative, and then the USD 305 School Marathon Foundation."

The community will find benefits beyond the entry fees — according to Visit Salina, the race will bring an estimated $1.6 million to businesses in town.

Many marathon runners began gearing up for the race months ago, but Mark Bomberger began preparing as an assistant cross-country coach over the summer.

Bomberger said he ran with his students every day of practice, but he also ran cross-country throughout his education.

"(I want) the bragging rights," Bomberger said. "I have a history in cross-country, and nobody likes the running aspect of it — it's going to be painful, but being able to say that you did it and push through that's a significant thing."

Craig said the marathon has gone smoothly so far thanks to more than 200 volunteers who help with the race — before and on race day.

One volunteer, Mollie Purzell, helped with the race last year and said she enjoyed meeting new people and going through this year's process.

"I like meeting people. You get to meet people from all over because since they've got so many people registered from all over the United States and other countries," Purzell said. "So it's really nice to meet people and welcome them to Salina."

Crossroads Marathon becomes largest in Kansas, hosting more than 3,000 runners

Advantage Trust Company founders, Mark and Julie Miller have been inducted into the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Hall of Fame in the Contemporary Category (1999 – present). 

According to a press release from the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, “the Salina Business Hall of Fame was established by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Its purpose is to recognize and honor Salina business leaders, both past and present, who have made extraordinary contributions to Salina, earned the respect of the local community and called attention to the Free Enterprise system and its value to our country and citizens in shaping Salina’s way of life”.

In 1997, Mark and Julie Miller sought out to create a trust company that would provide the type of personal service its clients deserve. The Millers formed a partnership with First Bank Kansas as they wanted a partner with local ties that shared their same vision of personally caring for their clients. This partnership has been a success. When ATC was founded, it assumed the trust functions for First Bank Kansas with just under $10 million in trust assets. 

Today, ATC manages approximately $950 million in trust assets. The impressive growth over the years is a testament to how they have taken care of their clients over multiple generations.

Mark and Julie come from Kansas roots with Julie growing up in Manhattan and Mark born and raised in Salina. They are the proud parents of two daughters, Elizabeth and Melanie, and the loving grandparents to four grandchildren. Julie has also recently been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from Women of Achievement, an award for women who have made important contributions through volunteer and/or professional activities throughout her lifetime. 

Julie's Lifetime Achievement Award is well-deserved recognition of her unwavering commitment to community and providing personalized service to clients. ATC's success story is a result of Mark and Julie's vision and dedication to Salina and the surrounding communities.

The Saline County Sheriff's Department offered the Salina community and surrounding area a chance to bring unused prescription drugs for proper disposal by the department.

On Saturday, Oct. 28, the Sheriff's Department gathered almost 200 pounds of prescription drugs from the community. The department also collects unused prescriptions through a secure drop-off box in the Sheriff's Department office.

According to Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski, the department has gathered and disposed of more than 14,000 pounds of unused prescription medication since October 2013.

"We've had about 64 or 65 people come and drop off," Kochanowski said. "Just from this area, we've got about 180 pounds, I would guess. We'll weigh it up when we get back to the office."

Once weighed, Kochanowski said they gathered 189.6 pounds, totaling 14,366.2 pounds since 2013. Since April this year, the department has collected 923.79 pounds to dispose of it safely.

The Saline County Sheriff's Department will take the prescription drugs to the Salina Landfill to bury them in an unmarked, lined pit.

The Salina Crossroads Marathon continues to grow in size and with 3280 runners currently registered is expected to be the largest marathon event in Kansas. Runners are coming from all 50 states, Botswana, Canada, Mexico, and Columbia, South America. 

The two largest races are the half marathon with 1650 runners followed by the marathon with 730 runners.  The USATF Certified 5K Run/Walk currently has 575 runners and there are 70 youth registered for the new Half Mile Kids Fun Run. The remaining runners are registered for the team relays and virtual options.

This year there are 2,865 runners registered from outside of Salina, which includes over 1,430 runners from outside of the state of Kansas. Last year the number of out-of-state runners was 134. Visit Salina, a program of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, calculated the impact of the 2023 Salina Crossroads Marathon at $1,685,600 of estimated economic impact. The 2023 Salina Crossroads Marathon weekend will feature seven events: marathon, half marathon, 5K run, 5K walk, half marathon relay, marathon relay, and new half-mile kids run. 

“One of our goals with the Salina Crossroads Marathon is to create a high-quality event with fun race options for the entire family,” said Co-Race Director Daniel Craig. “We hope that the 5K run, 5K walk, team relays, new half-mile kids run, and opportunities to volunteer and cheer on the runners will enable the entire community to come out and be a part of an amazing marathon weekend. Volunteering is one of the best ways you can help to support your community. With the race continuing to grow the Salina Crossroads Marathon which will be held in downtown Salina on Saturday, November 4 is looking for additional volunteers.  The biggest need is for course monitors who will ensure safety along the race course by assisting traffic across intersections, providing pedestrians/runners with course directions, and encouraging participants along the course. 

Shifts that are available are 7:45 a.m.-11:00 a.m. or 10:45 a.m.-2:00 p.m. If you have never volunteered for a race before that is no problem. There will be detailed maps showing you where you need to be and the Salina Crossroads Marathon will host a volunteer training on Wednesday, November 1 at 6:00 p.m. at The Alley. The volunteer coordinator will also be available any time during the race to answer questions that come up. Volunteers will receive a Salina Crossroads volunteer shirt.

The Salina Crossroads Marathon began when two local runners (Chris Lehecka and Daniel Craig) started visiting about what it would look like for Salina to have a high-quality marathon and half marathon race. The City of Salina helped develop a fun and scenic course that minimized disruptions to traffic and parking in Downtown Salina. 

The Salina Crossroads Marathon planning committee includes individuals in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors as well as local runners. The goals of the Salina Crossroads Marathon are to have a high-quality race that can bring in runners from across the United States, provide 100% of the race entry fees to local organizations, and provide fun family friendly events so the entire community can come be a part of a USATF Certified and Boston Qualifying Marathon weekend.

What to know as Salina prepares to hold largest marathon in Kansas

With an estimated shortage of up to 1,500 childcare spaces, Saline County is experiencing a childcare crisis, and business leaders are stepping in to bring attention to it. Licensed childcare centers and in-home providers alike are operating at capacity and staffing shortages are choking their ability to expand. 

What's causing this staffing shortage? A wage gap that is tragically inhibiting centers from increasing capacity and even worse, discouraging potential childcare providers from entering the profession. 

Community leaders are concerned that this situation has the potential to yield devastating consequences for the future economic growth of Salina and Saline County.

This Friday, Nov. 3, aka the “BEST DAY EVER”, business leaders in Salina are combining efforts to shine a light on this issue by visiting licensed childcare providers to let them know that the community is behind them. Approximately 50 licensed in-home childcare providers will receive a visit from cape-wearing business leaders bearing gifts and words of appreciation and encouragement. 

“We just want these critically vital community members to know how important they are and that we are working to help resolve this situation," said Jeni Adams of The Bank of Tescott. “We believe a grassroots effort to bring attention to the Salina Early Childhood Initiative Fund and the Early Childhood Endowment Fund is the best way to support those who care for our most valuable and vulnerable community members!”

“The average childcare provider is earning $11/hr yet the living wage in Saline County is $15/hr," according to Salina Area United Way Director, Claire Ludes. 

Superhero cape-wearing businesspeople will be distributing envelopes enclosed with notes of encouragement and a monetary gift that represents the amount below the poverty line, that the average childcare provider is not earning every single day. 

“It's a small gesture but between these monetary gifts, gift baskets, and encouraging notes, hopefully area childcare providers will know that business leaders see and appreciate them, while raising awareness in the community about just how critical this situation is," shared Hayley Samford of Salina Family Healthcare Center.

“Best Day Ever” is part of a collective of events taking place across the country to generate 100,000 acts of kindness, in conjunction with social media influencer, Charlie Rocket, known for his Dream Machine tour and financial services provider, Kasasa. This is the first-time community financial institutions have come together for a nationwide event, demonstrating their local impact and the scale of their network. 

Salina’s "Best Day Ever” is the only nationwide event taking place where a community bank is partnering with other local businesses to amplify a cause that affects an entire community. 

“Though our immediate mission on November 3rd is to share as many acts of kindness as we can, our group from Nex-Tech, Kennedy Berkley Attorneys, Pathway Financial, Long McArthur, Salina Family Healthcare, and Fili Creative is hoping the effort ignites a flurry of community support that helps resolve this issue at the grassroots level. It affects everyone, so if everyone chips in, we can avert a disaster before it's too late," Adams said.

The Salina Area United Way Early Childcare Initiative Fund is comprised of money collected from grants, and donations from businesses and individuals.  This fund will be used to help childcare businesses in the community to provide quality childcare to those that need it. Initially, this fund will be used to help supplement the wage gap for the centers in Saline County. 

Centers in the community are currently paying childcare staff wages that are at poverty level – this has caused multiple rooms at the existing centers to close, contributing to the shortage of quality childcare in Saline County. 

With this fund, centers can apply for grants to help supplement the wage gap, increasing wages to $15 per hour for teaching assistants and $18 per hour for Lead Teachers. The living wage per the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce in Saline County is $15 per hour. The Salina Area United Way will also be working with this fund to look at opportunities for potential renovations and expansion of current centers and spaces in the area.

The ultimate goal is to raise half a million dollars a year for the Salina Early Childhood Initiative Fund. These are funds that can be given out now to close the pay gap while endowment funds continue to grow.&nbsp;

A staggering $12 million is needed to establish an endowment to permanently cover costs.&nbsp;

"If the people of this community, each can just chip in a little bit, whether it's, $1 a paycheck or it's a much larger gift to the endowment, then we're going to be able to solve this problem without the civic leaders having to raise our mill levy or raise sales taxes," said Mark Galloway, Employee Engagement Specialist at The Bank of Tescott.&nbsp;

The Salina Area United Way will also be working with this fund to look at opportunities for potential renovations and expansion of current centers and spaces in the area.The ultimate goal is to raise half a million dollars a year for the Salina Early Childhood Initiative Fund. Cold temperatures came on quickly in Kansas, and leaves have begun to drop.

While keeping up with leaves every fall is a challenge, Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says the amount of leaf cover on the ground has an impact on the underlying plants.

“Photosynthesis will be restricted in a lawn covered with a dense layer of leaves, preventing it from storing enough energy to survive winter,” Domenghini said.

Leaves can be added to a compost heap, but Domenghini recommends shredding them first. This can be done by mowing over them on the lawn and collecting them in the mower bag or they can be added directly into the planters.

“Incorporate 2-3 inches of shredded leaves to the soil at a time,” Domenghini said. “This can be repeated until the leaves are gone or the soil is frozen and cannot be worked. Shredded leaves can be used as mulch around trees, shrubs and perennials as well.”

Leaf mulch incorporated into lawns can help prevent weeds from germinating between grass plants. Leaf mulch has not been shown to negatively effect turf quality, color or soil pH, she said.

Shredded leaves can be left on the lawn if they are not too dense, Domenghini adds. As the lawn is mowed, the leaf pieces will fall in between the blades of grass and eventually break down into the soil.

“It may require multiple passes with the lawn mower to get the leaf size small enough. It is also necessary to mow frequently to keep up with the leaf drop,” Domenghini said.

If incorporating leaves into a cool-season lawn, Domenghini said it makes sense to be on a fall nitrogen fertilization program and core-aerate in the fall as well. You can mow leaves into a warm-season lawn but wait until late May or early June to fertilize and core-aerate, she said.

Salina Downtown, Inc., has announced that registration forms are now available for the 2023 Parade of Lights.&nbsp;

The parade is scheduled for Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. The route will be on Santa Fe Avenue from Elm Street to Prescott Avenue.

Deadline for entry is Monday, November 13th at noon!
